Astrology: The Physiognomy of Women

Verse 1 (garuda.1.64.1)

॥हरिरुवाच ॥ यस्यास्तु कुञ्चिताः केशा मुखं च परिमण्डलम् ॥ नाभिश्च दक्षिणावर्त्ता सा कन्या कुलवर्धिनी

.hariruvāca . yasyāstu kuñcitāḥ keśā mukhaṁ ca parimaṇḍalam . nābhiśca dakṣiṇāvarttā sā kanyā kulavardhinī

Hari said: She whose hair is curly, whose face is perfectly round, and whose navel spirals to the right — that maiden increases the fortune of her family.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.64.2)

या च काञ्चनवर्णाभा रक्तहस्तसरोरुहा ॥ सहस्त्राणां तु नारीणां भवेत्सापि पतिव्रता

yā ca kāñcanavarṇābhā raktahastasaroruhā . sahastrāṇāṁ tu nārīṇāṁ bhavetsāpi pativratā

And she who has a complexion like gold, whose hands and feet are like red lotuses — she too, among a thousand women, is a devoted wife.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.64.3)

वक्रकेशा च या कन्या मण्डलाक्षी च या भवेत् ॥ भर्त्ता च म्रियते तस्या नियतं दुः खभागिनी

vakrakeśā ca yā kanyā maṇḍalākṣī ca yā bhavet . bharttā ca mriyate tasyā niyataṁ duḥ khabhāginī

The maiden whose hair is wavy and whose eyes are perfectly round — her husband dies, and she is certainly destined for sorrow.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.64.4)

पूर्णचन्द्रमुखी कन्या बालसूर्य्यसमप्रभा ॥ विशालनेत्रा बिम्बोष्ठी सा कन्या लभते सुखम्

pūrṇacandramukhī kanyā bālasūryyasamaprabhā . viśālanetrā bimboṣṭhī sā kanyā labhate sukham

A maiden with a face like the full moon, radiant as the rising sun, with wide eyes and lips like the bimba fruit, attains happiness.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.64.5)

रेखाभिर्बहुभिः क्लेशं स्वल्पाभिर्धनहीनता ॥ रक्ताभिः सुखमाप्नोति कृष्णाभिः प्रेष्यतांव्रजेत्

rekhābhirbahubhiḥ kleśaṁ svalpābhirdhanahīnatā . raktābhiḥ sukhamāpnoti kṛṣṇābhiḥ preṣyatāṁvrajet

Very many lines bring hardship; very few lines bring poverty. Red lines bring happiness; black lines lead to servitude.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.64.6)

कार्य्ये च मन्त्री सत्स्त्री स्यात्सती (खी) स्यात्करणेषु च ॥ स्नेहेषु भार्य्या माता स्याद्वेश्या च शयने शुभा

kāryye ca mantrī satstrī syātsatī (khī) syātkaraṇeṣu ca . sneheṣu bhāryyā mātā syādveśyā ca śayane śubhā

In work she becomes like a wise counselor; in rites, like a chaste and virtuous woman; in affection, like a wife and mother; and in bed, as delightful as a courtesan.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.64.7)

अङ्कुशं कुण्डलं चक्रं यस्याः पाणितले भवेत् ॥ पुत्रं प्रसूयते नारी नरेन्द्रं लभते पतिम्

aṅkuśaṁ kuṇḍalaṁ cakraṁ yasyāḥ pāṇitale bhavet . putraṁ prasūyate nārī narendraṁ labhate patim

The woman on whose palm the mark of a goad, an earring, or a wheel appears bears a son and obtains a king as her husband.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.64.8)

यस्यास्तु रोमशौ पार्श्वौ रोमशौ च पयोधरौ ॥ अन्नतौ चाधरोष्ठौ च क्षिप्रं मारयते पतिम्

yasyāstu romaśau pārśvau romaśau ca payodharau . annatau cādharoṣṭhau ca kṣipraṁ mārayate patim

She whose two sides are hairy, and whose breasts are also hairy, and whose lower lip droops, quickly causes her husband's death.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.64.9)

यस्याः पाणितले रेखा प्राकारस्तोरणं भवेत् ॥ अपि दासकुले जाता राज्ञीत्वमुपगच्छति

yasyāḥ pāṇitale rekhā prākārastoraṇaṁ bhavet . api dāsakule jātā rājñītvamupagacchati

The woman on whose palm the mark of a rampart and an archway appears — even if born into a servant's family, she attains the rank of queen.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.64.10)

उद्वृत्ता कपिला यस्य रोमराजी निरन्तरम् ॥ अपि राजकुले जाता दासीत्वमुपगच्छति

udvṛttā kapilā yasya romarājī nirantaram . api rājakule jātā dāsītvamupagacchati

She whose line of body-hair is raised, tawny-colored, and unbroken — even if born into a royal family, falls into servitude.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.64.11)

यस्या अनामिकाङ्गुष्ठौ पृथिव्यां नैव तिष्ठतः ॥ पतिं मारयते क्षिप्रं स्वेच्छाचारेण वर्त्तते

yasyā anāmikāṅguṣṭhau pṛthivyāṁ naiva tiṣṭhataḥ . patiṁ mārayate kṣipraṁ svecchācāreṇa varttate

She whose ring finger and thumb do not touch the ground when the hand is laid flat quickly causes her husband's death, and lives according to her own will.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.64.12)

यस्या गमनमात्रेण भूमिकम्पः प्रजायते ॥ पतिं मारयते क्षिप्रं स्वेच्छाचारेण वर्त्तते

yasyā gamanamātreṇa bhūmikampaḥ prajāyate . patiṁ mārayate kṣipraṁ svecchācāreṇa varttate

She by whose very walk the earth trembles quickly causes her husband's death, and lives according to her own will.

Verse 13 (garuda.1.64.13)

चक्षुः स्नेहेन सौभाग्यं दन्तस्नेहेन भोजनम् ॥ त्वचः स्नेहेन शाय्यां च पादस्नेहेन वाहनम्

cakṣuḥ snehena saubhāgyaṁ dantasnehena bhojanam . tvacaḥ snehena śāyyāṁ ca pādasnehena vāhanam

From the luster of the eyes, good fortune; from the luster of the teeth, abundant food; from the luster of the skin, a fine bed; from the luster of the feet, a vehicle.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.64.14)

स्निग्धोन्नतौ ताम्रनखौ नार्याश्च चरणौ शुभौ ॥ मत्स्याङ्कुशाब्जचिह्नौ च चक्रलाङ्गललक्षितौ

snigdhonnatau tāmranakhau nāryāśca caraṇau śubhau . matsyāṅkuśābjacihnau ca cakralāṅgalalakṣitau

Glossy, raised feet with copper-hued nails are auspicious for a woman; marked with the signs of a fish, a goad, and a lotus, and marked with a wheel and a plow,

Verse 15 (garuda.1.64.15)

अस्वेदिनौ मूदुतलौ प्रशस्तौ चरणौ स्त्रियाः ॥ शुभे जङ्घे विरोमे च ऊरू हस्तिकरोपमौ

asvedinau mūdutalau praśastau caraṇau striyāḥ . śubhe jaṅghe virome ca ūrū hastikaropamau

sweat-free, soft-soled feet are praised for a woman. Auspicious, hair-free thighs, and thighs like an elephant's trunk, are also auspicious.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.64.16)

अश्वत्थपत्रसदृशं विपुलं गुह्यमुत्तमम् ॥ नाभिः प्रशस्ता गम्भीरा दक्षिणावर्त्तिका शुभा ॥ अरोमा त्रिवली नार्य्या हृत्स्तनौ रोमवर्जितौ

aśvatthapatrasadṛśaṁ vipulaṁ guhyamuttamam . nābhiḥ praśastā gambhīrā dakṣiṇāvarttikā śubhā . aromā trivalī nāryyā hṛtstanau romavarjitau

A full, excellent private part shaped like a pipal leaf; a deep, praised navel spiraling to the right, is auspicious; and a woman's belly, hairless and marked with three folds, and her breast and heart free of body-hair — these too are auspicious.
