Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 67
Svarodaya: The Auspicious and Inauspicious Signs of the Breath
Verse 1 (garuda.1.67.1)
.sūta uvāca . hareḥ śrutvā haro gaurīṁ dehasthaṁ jñānamabravīt
Suta said: Having heard it from Hari, Hara declared to Gauri the knowledge dwelling within the body.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.67.2)
kujo vahnī raviḥ pṛthvī saurirāpaḥ prakīrttitaḥ . vāyusaṁsthāsthito rāhurdakṣarandhrāvabhāsakaḥ
Mars is fire; the Sun is earth; Saturn is declared to be water; Rahu, situated in the element of wind, illuminates the right passage,
Verse 3 (garuda.1.67.3)
guruḥ śukrastathā saumyaścandraścaiva caturthakaḥ . vāmanāḍīṁ tu madhyasthāṁ kārayedātmanastathā
Jupiter and Venus are of Mercury's nature, and the Moon is the fourth element. One should establish one's own left channel as the central one.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.67.4)
yadācara ilāyuktastadā karmasamācaret . sthānasevāṁ tathā dhyānaṁ vāṇijyaṁ rājadarśanam
When the breath's movement is joined with Ida (the left channel), one should perform such deeds as: attending a place, meditation, trade, audience with a king,
Verse 5 (garuda.1.67.5)
anyāni śubhakarmāṇi kārayeta prayatnataḥ . dakṣanāḍīpravāhe tu śanirbhaumaśca saihikaḥ
and other auspicious deeds should be undertaken with effort. But in the flow of the right channel (Pingala), Saturn, Mars, and Rahu,
Verse 6 (garuda.1.67.6)
inaścaiva tathāpyeva pāpānāmudayo bhavet . śubhāśubhaviveko hi jñāyate tu svarodayāt
and the Sun as well — thus is the rising of malefic influences. The discernment of good and bad is indeed known through the rising of the breath.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.67.7)
dehamadhye sthitā nāḍyo bahurūpāḥ suvistarāḥ . nābheradhastādyaḥ kandastvaṁkurāstatra nirgatāḥ
The channels within the body are of many forms and greatly extended. Below the navel is the root, from which sprout-like channels emerge —
Verse 8 (garuda.1.67.8)
dvisaptatisahastrāṇi nābhimadhye vyavasthite . cakravacca sthitāstāstu sarvāḥ prāṇaharāḥ smṛtāḥ
seventy-two thousand of them, situated in the middle of the navel. They are all arranged like a wheel, and all are remembered as bearers of the life-breath.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.67.9)
tāsāṁ madhye trayaḥ śreṣṭhā vāmadakṣiṇamadhyamāḥ . vāmā somātmikā proktā dakṣiṇā ravisannibhā
Among them, three are the finest — the left, the right, and the middle. The left is declared to be of the Moon's nature; the right resembles the Sun;
Verse 10 (garuda.1.67.10)
madhyamā ca bhavedagniḥ phalaṁtī kālapūriṇī . vāmā hyamṛtarūpā ca jagadāpyāyane sthitā
and the middle one is of Fire's nature, ever active, filling time. The left is of the nature of nectar, existing for the nourishment of the world;
Verse 11 (garuda.1.67.11)
dakṣiṇā raudrabhāgena jagacchoṣayate sadā . dvayorvāhe tu mṛtyuḥ syātsarvakāryyavināśinī
the right, through its fierce portion, ever parches the world. When both flow together, it is death, which destroys every undertaking.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.67.12)
nirgame tu bhavedvāmā praveśe dakṣiṇā smṛtā . iḍācāre tathā saumyaṁ candrasūryyagatastathā
For departure, the left is auspicious; for entering, the right is remembered as auspicious. During the flow of Ida, and during the Moon-Sun alternation, gentle deeds should be performed,
Verse 13 (garuda.1.67.13)
kārayetkrūra karmāṇi prāṇe piṁgalasaṁsthite . yātrāyāṁ sarvakāryeṣu viṣāpahāraṇe iḍā
and when the breath is established in Pingala, fierce deeds should be performed. For travel, for all undertakings, and for removing poison, Ida is auspicious;
Verse 14 (garuda.1.67.14)
bhojane maithune yuddhe piṁgalā siddhidāyikā . uccāṭamāraṇādyeṣu karmasveteṣu piṅgalā
for eating, union, and battle, Pingala grants success. For banishing, destroying, and similar rites, Pingala should be used.
Verse 15 (garuda.1.67.15)
maithune caiva saṁgrāme bhojane siddhidāyikā . śobhaneṣu ca kāryyeṣu yātrāyāṁ viṣakarmaṇi
In union, battle, and eating, it bestows success. For auspicious undertakings, for travel, and for poison-related rites,
Verse 16 (garuda.1.67.16)
śāntimuktyarthasiddhyai ca iḍā yojyā narādhipaiḥ . dvābhyāṁ caiva pravāhe ca krūrasaumyavivarjane
for peace, liberation, and the accomplishment of purpose, kings should use Ida. When both flow together, avoiding both fierce and gentle acts,
Verse 17 (garuda.1.67.17)
viṣavattaṁ tu jānīyātsaṁsmarettu vicakṣaṇaḥ . saumyādiśubhakāryeṣu lābhādijayajīvite
one should know it as poisonous, and the discerning person should always remember this. For gentle auspicious undertakings, for gain, victory, and life,
Verse 18 (garuda.1.67.18)
gamanāgamane caiva vāmā sarvatra pūjitā . yuddhādibhojane ghāte strīṇāṁ caiva tu saṅgame
and for coming and going, the left channel is honored everywhere. For battle, harmful food, killing, and union with women,
Verse 19 (garuda.1.67.19)
praśastā dakṣiṇā nāḍī praveśe kṣudrakarmaṇi . śubhāśubhāni kāryyāṇi lābhālābhau jayājayau
the right channel is praised, as well as for entering and for base deeds. Auspicious and inauspicious undertakings, gain and loss, victory and defeat,
Verse 20 (garuda.1.67.20)
jīvājīvāya yatpṛcchenna sidhyati ca madhyamā . vāmācāre'thavā dakṣe pratyaye yatra nāyakaḥ
and life or death — whatever is asked about, the middle channel yields no success. Whether in the left or right practice, wherever the questioner's certainty lies —
Verse 21 (garuda.1.67.21)
tanusthaḥ pṛcchate yastu tatra siddhirna saṁśayaḥ . vaicchando vāmadevastu yadā vahati cātmani
he who asks while positioned within his own body — there, without doubt, success follows.
Verse 22 (garuda.1.67.22)
tatra bhāge sthitaḥ pṛcchetsiddhirbhavati niṣphalā . vāme vā dakṣiṇe vāpi yatra saṁkramate śivā
When the fickle wind-deity flows within oneself, and one asks while positioned in that very portion, the resulting success becomes fruitless. Whether left or right, wherever the auspicious flow shifts to,
Verse 23 (garuda.1.67.23)
ghore ghorāṇi kāryyāṇi saumye vai madhyamāni ca . prasthite bhāgato haṁse dvābhyāṁ vai sarvavāhinī
in the fierce portion, fierce deeds; in the gentle portion, moderate deeds should be performed. When the breath proceeds by its own portion, and when it flows through both nostrils together,
Verse 24 (garuda.1.67.24)
tadā mṛtyuṁ vijānīyādyogī yogaviśāradaḥ . yatra yatra sthitaḥ pṛcchedvāmadakṣiṇasaṁmukhaḥ
then the yogi skilled in yoga should recognize it as death. Wherever one is positioned, facing left or right, when asking,
Verse 25 (garuda.1.67.25)
tatra tatra samaṁ diśyādvātasyodayanaṁ sadā . agrato vāmikā śreṣṭhā pṛṣṭhato dakṣiṇā śubhā
there one should indicate the direction according to the rising of the breath, correspondingly. In front, the left is best; behind, the right is auspicious.
Verse 26 (garuda.1.67.26)
vāmena vāmikā proktā dakṣiṇe dakṣiṇā śubhā . vāme vāmā śubhe caiva dakṣiṇe dakṣiṇā śubhā
On the left side, the left channel is declared auspicious; on the right side, the right is auspicious. On the left, the left is auspicious; and on the right, the right is auspicious.
Verse 27 (garuda.1.67.27)
jīvo jīvati jīvena yacchūnyaṁ tastvaro bhavet . yatkiñcitkāryyamuddiṣṭaṁ jayādiśubhalakṣaṇam
Life lives by life; whatever is empty quickly comes to nothing. Whatever undertaking has been determined, marked by victory and other auspicious signs,
Verse 28 (garuda.1.67.28)
tatsarvaṁ pūrṇanāḍyāṁ tu jāyate nirvikalpataḥ . anyanāḍyādiparyyantaṁ pakṣatrayamudāhṛtam
all of that occurs, without doubt, when the channel flows full. From one channel-phase to the next, a set of three portions has been described.
Verse 29 (garuda.1.67.29)
yāvatṣaṣṭhī tu pṛcchāyāṁ pūrṇāyāṁ prathamo jayet . riktāyāṁ tu dvitīyastu kathayettadaśaṅkitaḥ
Up to the sixth portion, when asked during a full channel, the first party wins; during an empty one, the second party — this should be declared without hesitation.
Verse 30 (garuda.1.67.30)
vāmācārasamo vāyurjāyate karmasiddhidaḥ . pravṛtte dakṣiṇe mārge viṣame viṣamākṣaram
Breath flowing evenly in the left channel grants success in undertakings. When the right path is active, in an odd situation, a name of odd syllables wins;
Verse 31 (garuda.1.67.31)
anyatra vāmavāhe tu nāma vai viṣamākṣaram . tadāsau jayamāpnoti yodhaḥ saṁgrāmamadhyataḥ
otherwise, in the left flow, a name of odd syllables wins — then that warrior attains victory in the midst of battle.
Verse 32 (garuda.1.67.32)
dakṣavātapravāhe tu yadi nāma samākṣaram . jā(ja) yate nātra sandeho nāḍīmaghye tu lakṣayet
In the flow of the right breath, if the name has an even number of syllables, victory occurs without doubt — this should be observed in the middle of the channel's flow.
Verse 33 (garuda.1.67.33)
piṅgalāntargate prāṇe śamanīyāhavaṁ jayet . yāvannāḍyudayaṁ cārastāṁ diśaṁ yāvadāpayet
When the breath is within Pingala, the side needing pacification wins in battle. As long as the channel's rising movement continues, the result follows in that same direction,
Verse 34 (garuda.1.67.34)
na dātuṁ jāyate so'pi nātra kāryyā vicāraṇā . atha saṁgrāmamadhye tu yatra nāḍī sadā vahet
and it cannot be reversed — there should be no doubt about this. Now, in the midst of battle, in whichever direction the channel ever flows,
Verse 35 (garuda.1.67.35)
sā diśā jayamāpnoti śūnye bhaṁgaṁ vinirdiśet . jātacāre jayaṁ vidyānmṛtake mṛtamādiśet
that direction attains victory; when the flow is empty, one should indicate defeat. When the movement is active, one should know victory; when it is still, one should indicate death.
Verse 36 (garuda.1.67.36)
jayaṁ parājayaṁ caiva yo jānāti sa paṇḍitaḥ . vāme vā dakṣiṇe vāpi yatra sañcarate śivam
He who knows both victory and defeat is truly wise. Whether in the left or the right, wherever the auspicious breath moves,
Verse 37 (garuda.1.67.37)
kṛtvā tatpadamāpnoti yātrā santataśobhanā . śaśisūryyapravāhe tu sati yuddhaṁ samācaret
setting out in that direction, one attains one's goal, and the journey remains continuously auspicious. When the Moon-Sun alternating flow is present, one should engage in battle.
Verse 38 (garuda.1.67.38)
yastu pṛcchati tatrasthaḥ sa sādhurjayatidhruvam . yāṁ diśaṁ vahate vāyustāṁ diśaṁ yāvadājayaḥ
He who asks while positioned in that state, that virtuous one certainly wins. In whichever direction the breath flows, in that direction, until victory,
Verse 39 (garuda.1.67.39)
jāyate nātra sandeha handro yadyagrataḥ sthitaḥ . meṣyādyā daśa yā nāḍyo dakṣiṇā vāma saṁsthitāḥ
it will indeed come, without doubt, if the adversary is positioned ahead. The ten channels beginning with Aries are situated to the right and left,
Verse 40 (garuda.1.67.40)
caresthire tadvimārge tādṛśetādṛśe kramāt . nirgame nirgamaṁ yāti saṁgrahe saṁgrahaṁ viduḥ
in movable and fixed signs, along that same path, in that same order. In departure, one knows it leads to departure; in gathering, to gathering.
Verse 41 (garuda.1.67.41)
pṛcchakasya vacaḥ śrutvā ghaṇṭākāreṇa lakṣayet . vāme vā dakṣiṇe vāpi pañcatattvasthitaḥ śive
Having heard the questioner's words, one should discern their truth by the sound of a bell. O Shiva-goddess, in the left or the right, the five elements are situated;
Verse 42 (garuda.1.67.42)
ūrddhve'gniradha āpaśca tiryyaksaṁsthaḥ prabhañjanaḥ . madhye tu pṛthivī jñeyā nabhaḥ sarvatra sarvadā
above is Fire, below is Water, and situated diagonally is Wind. In the middle, Earth should be known; Space is everywhere, always.
Verse 43 (garuda.1.67.43)
ūrddhve mṛtyuradhaḥ śāntistiryyak coccāṭayetsudhīḥ . madhye stambhaṁ vijānīyānmokṣaḥ sarvatra sarvage
Above (Fire), death; below (Water), peace; and in the diagonal direction (Wind), the wise should perform banishing rites. In the middle (Earth), one should know it as good for immobilization; and in the all-pervading (Space), there is liberation everywhere.
