Shalagrama, the Sixty-Year Cycle, and the Rising of the Breath
Verse 1 (garuda.1.66.1)
॥ हरिरुवाच ॥ निर्लक्षणा शुभा स्याच्च चक्राङ्कितशिलार्चनात् ॥ आदौ सुदर्शनो मूर्तिर्लक्ष्मीनारायणः परः
. hariruvāca . nirlakṣaṇā śubhā syācca cakrāṅkitaśilārcanāt . ādau sudarśano mūrtirlakṣmīnārāyaṇaḥ paraḥ
Hari said: A stone without a chakra-mark also becomes auspicious through the worship of a chakra-marked stone. First the Sudarshana form; then the supreme Lakshmi-Narayana;
Verse 2 (garuda.1.66.2)
त्रिचक्रोऽसावच्युतः स्याच्चतुश्चक्रश्चतुर्भुजः ॥ वासुदेवश्च प्रद्युम्नस्ततः सङ्कर्षणः स्मृतः
tricakro'sāvacyutaḥ syāccatuścakraścaturbhujaḥ . vāsudevaśca pradyumnastataḥ saṅkarṣaṇaḥ smṛtaḥ
with three chakras, Achyuta; with four chakras, the four-armed form. Vasudeva, then Pradyumna, and after that Sankarshana is remembered.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.66.3)
पुरुषोत्तमश्चाष्टमः स्यान्नवव्यूहो दशात्मकः ॥ एकादशोऽनिरुद्धः स्याद्द्वादशो द्वादशात्मकः
puruṣottamaścāṣṭamaḥ syānnavavyūho daśātmakaḥ . ekādaśo'niruddhaḥ syāddvādaśo dvādaśātmakaḥ
The eighth is Purushottama; the tenfold-marked is the Navavyuha. The eleventh is Aniruddha; the twelfth is the twelve-fold Dvadashatma.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.66.4)
अत ऊर्ध्वमनन्तः स्याच्चक्रे रेखादिकैः क्रमात् ॥ सुदर्शना लक्षिताश्च पूजिताः सर्वकामदाः
ata ūrdhvamanantaḥ syāccakre rekhādikaiḥ kramāt . sudarśanā lakṣitāśca pūjitāḥ sarvakāmadāḥ
Beyond this is Ananta — identified in due order by the lines and other marks on the chakra. Marked with the Sudarshana and duly worshipped, all these grant every desire.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.66.5)
शालग्रामशिला यत्र देवो द्वारवतीभवः ॥ उभयोः सङ्गमो यत्र तत्र मुक्तिर्न संशयः
śālagrāmaśilā yatra devo dvāravatībhavaḥ . ubhayoḥ saṅgamo yatra tatra muktirna saṁśayaḥ
Where the shalagrama stone and an image originating from Dvaraka — wherever these two meet together, there liberation is certainly attained.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.66.6)
शालग्रामो द्वारका च नैमिषं पुष्करं गया ॥ वाराणसी प्रयागश्च कुरुक्षेत्रं च सूकरम्
śālagrāmo dvārakā ca naimiṣaṁ puṣkaraṁ gayā . vārāṇasī prayāgaśca kurukṣetraṁ ca sūkaram
Shalagrama and Dvaraka, Naimisha, Pushkara, Gaya, Varanasi and Prayaga, Kurukshetra and Sukara (Varaha-kshetra),
Verse 7 (garuda.1.66.7)
गङ्गा च नर्मदा चैव चन्द्रभागा सरस्वती ॥ पुरुषोत्तमो महाकालस्तीर्थान्येतानि शङ्कर
gaṅgā ca narmadā caiva candrabhāgā sarasvatī . puruṣottamo mahākālastīrthānyetāni śaṅkara
the Ganga and the Narmada, Chandrabhaga, Sarasvati, Purushottama (Puri) and Mahakala (Ujjain) — O Shankara, these are all sacred fords,

सर्वपापहराण्येव भुक्तमुक्तिप्रदानि वै ॥ प्रभवो विभवः शुक्लः प्रमोदोऽथ प्रजापतिः
sarvapāpaharāṇyeva bhuktamuktipradāni vai . prabhavo vibhavaḥ śuklaḥ pramodo'tha prajāpatiḥ

अङ्गिराः श्रीमुखो भावः युवा धाता तथैव च ॥ ईश्वरो बहुधान्यश्च प्रमाथी विक्रमो विषुः
aṅgirāḥ śrīmukho bhāvaḥ yuvā dhātā tathaiva ca . īśvaro bahudhānyaśca pramāthī vikramo viṣuḥ

चित्रभानुः स्वभानुश्च तारणः पार्थिवो व्ययः ॥ सर्वजित्सर्वधारी च विरोधी विकृतिः स्वरः

dundubhī rudhirodgārī raktākṣaḥ krodhano'kṣayaḥ . aśobhanāḥ śobhanāśca nāmnaivaite hi vatsarāḥ

Verse 15 (garuda.1.66.15)
कालं वक्ष्यामि संसिद्ध्यै रुद्र पञ्चस्वरोदयात् ॥ राजा सा(मा) जा उदासा च पीडा मृत्युस्तथैव च
kālaṁ vakṣyāmi saṁsiddhyai rudra pañcasvarodayāt . rājā sā(mā) jā udāsā ca pīḍā mṛtyustathaiva ca
these sixty years, by their names alone, are either inauspicious or auspicious. O Rudra, I shall now describe the reckoning of time, for the sake of success, through the rising of the five breath-tones.
Verse 16 (garuda.1.66.16)
आ ई ऊ ऐ औ स्वरांश्च लिखेत्पञ्चाग्निकोष्ठके ॥ ऊर्ध्वतिर्य्यग्गतै रेखैः षड्वह्निक्रममागतैः
ā ī ū ai au svarāṁśca likhetpañcāgnikoṣṭhake . ūrdhvatiryyaggatai rekhaiḥ ṣaḍvahnikramamāgataiḥ
Raja, Samaja, Udasa, Pida, and likewise Mrityu — with these names, the vowels A, I, U, Ai, and Au should be written in the five-fire diagram.
Verse 17 (garuda.1.66.17)
तिथी एकाग्निकोष्ठेषु त्रयो राजाथ सा (मा) जयाः ॥ उदासामृत्युपीडाश्च कुजः सोमसुतः क्रमात्
tithī ekāgnikoṣṭheṣu trayo rājātha sā (mā) jayāḥ . udāsāmṛtyupīḍāśca kujaḥ somasutaḥ kramāt
With lines going upward and diagonally, arranged in a sequence of six fires, in the single-fire compartments are the tithis — three for Raja, then Samaja,
Verse 18 (garuda.1.66.18)
गुरुशुक्रौ च मन्दश्च रविचन्द्रौ यथोदितम् ॥ रेवत्यादिमृगान्ताश्च ऋक्षाणि प्रथमा कला
guruśukrau ca mandaśca ravicandrau yathoditam . revatyādimṛgāntāśca ṛkṣāṇi prathamā kalā
Udasa, Mrityu, and Pida — in order, for Mars, Mercury, then Jupiter and Venus, and Saturn, the Sun, and the Moon, as has been declared.
Verse 19 (garuda.1.66.19)
पञ्चपञ्चान्यत्र भानि चैत्राद्य उदयस्तथा ॥ द्वादशाहैर्द्वयोर्मासनाम्नोराद्यक्षरं तथा
pañcapañcānyatra bhāni caitrādya udayastathā . dvādaśāhairdvayormāsanāmnorādyakṣaraṁ tathā
The nakshatras from Revati to Mrigashira — the first syllable; five nakshatras each, and likewise the rising of the months beginning with Chaitra.
Verse 20 (garuda.1.66.20)
कलालिङ्गा च या तिष्ठेत्पञ्चमस्तस्य वै मृतिः ॥ कला तिथिस्तथा वारो नक्षत्रं मासमेव च
kalāliṅgā ca yā tiṣṭhetpañcamastasya vai mṛtiḥ . kalā tithistathā vāro nakṣatraṁ māsameva ca
Over twelve days, the first letter of the names of the two months. Whichever syllable-linked nakshatra it falls upon, the fifth from it indicates death.
Verse 21 (garuda.1.66.21)
नामोदयस्य पूर्वं च तथा भवति नान्यथा ॥ ओं क्षौं (क्षौः) शिवाय नमः
nāmodayasya pūrvaṁ ca tathā bhavati nānyathā . oṁ kṣauṁ (kṣauḥ) śivāya namaḥ
The syllable, the tithi, the weekday, the nakshatra, and the month — the naming precedes the calculation of rising, and not otherwise. Om kshaum (kshauh), salutation to Shiva.
Verse 22 (garuda.1.66.22)
क्षामाद्यङ्गशिवामीक्षा विषग्रहमतिर्हर ॥ त्रैलोक्यमोहनं बीजं नृसिंहस्य तु पद्म(न्न)गम्
kṣāmādyaṅgaśivāmīkṣā viṣagrahamatirhara . trailokyamohanaṁ bījaṁ nṛsiṁhasya tu padma(nna)gam
O Hara, through the vision of Shiva applied to the limbs beginning with 'kshama', poison, planetary affliction, and confused thought are removed. The seed-syllable that enchants the three worlds is the lotus-form of Narasimha,
Verse 23 (garuda.1.66.23)
मृत्युञ्जयो गणो लक्ष्मी रोचनाद्यैस्तु लेखितः ॥ भूर्जे तु धारिताः कण्ठे बाहौ चेति जयादिदाः
mṛtyuñjayo gaṇo lakṣmī rocanādyaistu lekhitaḥ . bhūrje tu dhāritāḥ kaṇṭhe bāhau ceti jayādidāḥ
and, written with orpiment and the like along with Mrityunjaya, Ganesha, and Lakshmi, worn on birch-bark at the throat or upon the arm, these bestow victory and the rest.
