Verse 1 (garuda.1.92.1)

रुद्रउवाच । विष्णोर्ध्यानं पुनर्ब्रूहि शङ्खचक्रगदाधर । येन विज्ञातमात्रेण कृतकृत्यो भवेन्नरः

rudrauvāca viṣṇordhyānaṁ punarbrūhi śaṅkhacakragadādhara yena vijñātamātreṇa kṛtakṛtyo bhavennaraḥ

Rudra said: Tell me again, O bearer of conch, discus, and mace, the meditation on Vishnu, by merely knowing which a man becomes fulfilled.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.92.2)

हरिरुवाच । प्रवक्ष्यामि हरेर्ध्यानं मायातन्त्रविमर्दकम् । मूर्त्तामूर्तादिभेदेन तद्ध्यानं द्विविधं हर

hariruvāca pravakṣyāmi harerdhyānaṁ māyātantravimardakam mūrttāmūrtādibhedena taddhyānaṁ dvividhaṁ hara

Hari said: I shall declare the meditation on Hari, which dispels the workings of maya. O Hara, that meditation is of two kinds — with form, and without form.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.92.3)

अमूर्त्तं रुद्र कथितं हन्त मूर्त्तं ब्रवीम्यहम् । सूर्य्यकोटिप्रतीकाशो जिष्णुर्भाजिष्णुरेकतः

amūrttaṁ rudra kathitaṁ hanta mūrttaṁ bravīmyaham sūryyakoṭipratīkāśo jiṣṇurbhājiṣṇurekataḥ

O Rudra, the formless meditation has been told; now I shall tell the meditation with form. He is radiant like ten million suns, victorious, resplendent, singular —

Verse 4 (garuda.1.92.4)

कुन्दगोक्षीरधवलो हरिर्ध्येयो मुमुक्षुभिः । विशालेन सुसौम्येन शङ्खेन च समन्वितः

kundagokṣīradhavalo harirdhyeyo mumukṣubhiḥ viśālena susaumyena śaṅkhena ca samanvitaḥ

white as the jasmine flower and cow's milk — Hari should be meditated upon by those seeking liberation, endowed with a broad and most beautiful conch.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.92.5)

सहस्त्रादित्यतुल्येन ज्वालामालोग्ररूपिणा । चक्रेण चान्वितः शान्तो गदाहस्तः शुभाननः

sahastrādityatulyena jvālāmālograrūpiṇā cakreṇa cānvitaḥ śānto gadāhastaḥ śubhānanaḥ

endowed with a discus radiant as a thousand suns, terrible with garlands of flame, yet himself peaceful, mace in hand, of auspicious countenance —

किरीटेन महार्हेण रत्नप्रज्वलितेन च । सायुधः सर्वगो देवः सरोरुहधरस्तथा

kirīṭena mahārheṇa ratnaprajvalitena ca sāyudhaḥ sarvago devaḥ saroruhadharastathā

with a most precious crown, blazing with gems; armed, the all-pervading god, and likewise holding a lotus —

Verse 7 (garuda.1.92.7)

वनमालाधरः शुभ्रः समांसो हेमभूषणः । सुवस्त्रः शुद्धदेहश्च सुकर्णः पद्मसंस्थितः

vanamālādharaḥ śubhraḥ samāṁso hemabhūṣaṇaḥ suvastraḥ śuddhadehaśca sukarṇaḥ padmasaṁsthitaḥ

wearing a forest-garland, radiant, of full form, adorned with gold; well-clothed, of pure body, with beautiful ears, seated upon a lotus —

Verse 8 (garuda.1.92.8)

हिरण्मयशरीरश्च चारुहारी शुभाङ्गदः । केयूरेण समायुक्तो वनमालासमन्वितः

hiraṇmayaśarīraśca cāruhārī śubhāṅgadaḥ keyūreṇa samāyukto vanamālāsamanvitaḥ

of golden body, wearing a beautiful necklace, with lovely armlets; endowed with bracelets, and adorned with the forest-garland —

Verse 9 (garuda.1.92.9)

श्रीवत्सकौस्तुभयुतो लक्ष्मीवन्द्येक्षणान्वितः । अणिमादिगुणैर्युक्तः सृष्टिसंहारकारकः

śrīvatsakaustubhayuto lakṣmīvandyekṣaṇānvitaḥ aṇimādiguṇairyuktaḥ sṛṣṭisaṁhārakārakaḥ

bearing the Shrivatsa mark and the Kaustubha jewel, with eyes worthy of Lakshmi's veneration; endowed with the powers beginning with animā, the agent of creation and dissolution —

Verse 10 (garuda.1.92.10)

मुनिध्येयोऽसुरध्येयो देवध्येयोऽतिसुन्दरः । ब्रह्मादिस्तम्बपर्य्यन्तभूतजातहृदिस्थितः

munidhyeyo'suradhyeyo devadhyeyo'tisundaraḥ brahmādistambaparyyantabhūtajātahṛdisthitaḥ

meditated upon by sages, asuras, and gods, exceedingly beautiful; dwelling in the heart of every being born, from Brahma down to a blade of grass —

Verse 11 (garuda.1.92.11)

सनातनोऽव्ययो मेध्यः सर्वानुग्रहकृत्प्रभुः । नारायणो महादेवः स्फुरन्मकरकुण्डलः

sanātano'vyayo medhyaḥ sarvānugrahakṛtprabhuḥ nārāyaṇo mahādevaḥ sphuranmakarakuṇḍalaḥ

eternal, imperishable, pure, the lord who bestows grace on all; Narayana, the great god, with gleaming makara-shaped earrings —

Verse 12 (garuda.1.92.12)

सन्तापनाशनोऽभ्यर्च्यो मङ्गल्यो दुष्टनाशनः । सर्वात्मा सर्वरूपश्च सर्वगो ग्रहनाशनः

santāpanāśano'bhyarcyo maṅgalyo duṣṭanāśanaḥ sarvātmā sarvarūpaśca sarvago grahanāśanaḥ

the destroyer of suffering, worthy of worship, auspicious, destroyer of the wicked; the self of all, of all forms, all-pervading, destroyer of malefic influence —

Verse 13 (garuda.1.92.13)

चार्वङ्गुलीयसंयुक्तः सुदीप्तनख एव च । शरण्यः सुखकारी च सौम्यरूपो महेश्वरः

cārvaṅgulīyasaṁyuktaḥ sudīptanakha eva ca śaraṇyaḥ sukhakārī ca saumyarūpo maheśvaraḥ

adorned with beautiful rings, and with brilliantly shining nails; a refuge, bestower of happiness, of gentle form, the great lord —

Verse 14 (garuda.1.92.14)

सर्वालङ्कारसंयुक्तश्चारुचन्दनचर्चितः । सर्वदेवसमायुक्तः सर्वदेवप्रियङ्करः

sarvālaṅkārasaṁyuktaścārucandanacarcitaḥ sarvadevasamāyuktaḥ sarvadevapriyaṅkaraḥ

adorned with every ornament, anointed with fine sandal-paste; accompanied by all the gods, beloved of all the gods —

Verse 15 (garuda.1.92.15)

सर्वलोकहितैषी च सर्वेशः सर्वभावनः । आदित्यमण्डले संस्थो अग्निस्थो वारिसंस्थितः

sarvalokahitaiṣī ca sarveśaḥ sarvabhāvanaḥ ādityamaṇḍale saṁstho agnistho vārisaṁsthitaḥ

wishing well for all the worlds, the lord of all, the creator of all; established in the orb of the sun, present in fire, present in water —

Verse 16 (garuda.1.92.16)

वासुदेवो जगद्धाता ध्येयो विष्णुर्मुमुक्षुभिः । वासुदेवोऽहमस्मीति आत्मा ध्येयो हरिर्हरिः

vāsudevo jagaddhātā dhyeyo viṣṇurmumukṣubhiḥ vāsudevo'hamasmīti ātmā dhyeyo harirhariḥ

Vasudeva, the sustainer of the world — Vishnu should be meditated upon by those seeking liberation with the thought 'I am Vasudeva'; the self, Hari, should be meditated upon as Hari.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.92.17)

ध्यायन्त्येवं च ये विष्णुं ते यान्ति परमां गतिम् । याज्ञवल्क्यः पुरा ह्येवं ध्यात्वा विष्णुं सुरेश्वरम्

dhyāyantyevaṁ ca ye viṣṇuṁ te yānti paramāṁ gatim yājñavalkyaḥ purā hyevaṁ dhyātvā viṣṇuṁ sureśvaram

And those who meditate upon Vishnu in this way attain the supreme goal. Formerly, Yajnavalkya, having thus meditated upon Vishnu, lord of the gods —

Verse 18 (garuda.1.92.18)

धर्मोपदेशकर्त्तृत्वं संप्राप्यागात्परं पदम् । तस्मात्त्वमपि देवेश ! विष्णुं चिन्तय शङ्कर !

dharmopadeśakarttṛtvaṁ saṁprāpyāgātparaṁ padam tasmāttvamapi deveśa ! viṣṇuṁ cintaya śaṅkara !

having attained the role of teacher of dharma, went to the supreme abode. Therefore, O lord of gods, O Shankara, you too should contemplate Vishnu.

Verse 19 (garuda.1.92.19)

विष्णुध्यानं पठेद्यस्तु प्राप्नोति परमां गतिम्

viṣṇudhyānaṁ paṭhedyastu prāpnoti paramāṁ gatim

Whoever recites this meditation on Vishnu attains the supreme goal.
