The Hells

Chapter 2All chaptersChapter 4

Verse 1 (garuda.2.3.1)

sūta uvāca | evamutsāhitaḥ pakṣī svarūpaṁ nirayasya tu | papracchanarakāṇyevaṁ śrutvā cotkūlitāntaraḥ

Suta said: Thus encouraged, the bird, his heart deeply stirred by what he had heard, went on to ask in this manner about the nature of the hells.

Verse 2 (garuda.2.3.2)

garuḍa uvāca | narakāṇāṁ svarūpaṁ me vada yeṣu vikarmiṇaḥ | pātyante duḥ khabhūyiṣṭhāsteṣāṁ bhedāṁśca kīrtaya

Garuda said: Tell me the nature of the hells into which evildoers are cast down amid such abounding suffering, and describe their different kinds.

Verse 3 (garuda.2.3.3)

śrībhagavānuvāca | narakāṇāṁ sahasrāṇi vartante hyaruṇānuja | śakyaṁ vistarato naiva vaktuṁ prādhānyato bruve

The Blessed Lord said: O younger brother of Aruna, the hells number in the thousands; it is not possible to describe them all in detail, so I shall tell of the principal ones.

Verse 4 (garuda.2.3.4)

rauravaṁ nāma narakaṁ mukhyaṁ tadvainibodha me | raurave kūṭasākṣī tu yāti yaścānṛtī naraḥ

The hell named Raurava is foremost; hear of it from me. To Raurava goes the man who bears false witness, and he who speaks untruth.

Verse 5 (garuda.2.3.5)

yojanānāṁ sahasre dve rauravo hi pramāṇataḥ | jānumātrapramāṇaṁ tu tatra gartaṁ sudustaram

In measure, Raurava extends two thousand yojanas; there lies a pit, knee-deep and utterly impassable.

Verse 6 (garuda.2.3.6)

tatrāṁgāracayaughena kṛtaṁ taddharaṇīsamam | tatrāgninā sutīvreṇa tāpitāṁgārabhūminā

It is filled level with the ground by heaps of burning coals; there, upon that coal-ground scorched by intensely fierce fire,

Verse 7 (garuda.2.3.7)

tanmadhye pāpakarmāṇaṁ vimuñcanti yamānugāḥ | sa dahyamānastīvreṇa vahninā paridhāvati

the servants of Yama release the sinner into its very midst. Burning in that fierce fire, he runs about wildly,

Verse 8 (garuda.2.3.8)

padepade ca pādo'sya sphuṭyate śīryate punaḥ | ahorātreṇoddharaṇaṁ pādanyāsena gacchati

and at every step his foot splits open and is torn asunder, only to knit again; in a single day and night he advances no further than the length of one footstep.

Verse 9 (garuda.2.3.9)

evaṁ sahasraṁ vistīrṇaṁ yojanānāṁ vimucyate | tato'nyatpāpaśuddhyarthaṁ tādṛṁnirayamṛcchati

Thus he is at last released from that hell, spread over a thousand yojanas; and then, for the purging of his remaining sin, he passes on to another hell of like kind.

Verse 10 (garuda.2.3.10)

rauravaste samākhyātaḥ prathamo narako mayā | mahārauravasaṁjñaṁ tu śṛṇuṣva narakaṁ khaga

This first hell, Raurava, I have described to you. Now, O bird, hear of the hell named Maharaurava.

Verse 11 (garuda.2.3.11)

yojanānāṁ sahasrāṇi santi pañca samantataḥ | tatra tāmramayī bhūmiradhastasyā hutāśanaḥ

It extends five thousand yojanas on every side; there the ground is made of copper, and beneath it burns a fire,

Verse 12 (garuda.2.3.12)

tayā tapantyā sā sarvā prodyadvidyutsamaprabhā | vibhāvyate mahāraudrā pāpināṁ darśanādiṣu

which, heating it, makes that whole ground blaze with a brilliance like flashing lightning, appearing utterly dreadful even at the mere sight of the sinners.

Verse 13 (garuda.2.3.13)

tasyāṁ baddhakarābhyāṁ ca padbhyāṁ caiva yamānugaiḥ | mucyate pāpakṛnmadhye luṇṭhamānaḥ sa gacchati

There, hands and feet bound by the messengers of Yama, the doer of evil is released into its midst, and he moves along writhing on the ground,

Verse 14 (garuda.2.3.14)

kākairbakairvṛkolūkairmaśakairvṛścikaistathā | bhakṣyamāṇaistathā raudrairgato mārge vikṛṣyate

torn at by crows, herons, wolves, owls, mosquitoes and scorpions, dragged along that dreadful path,

Verse 15 (garuda.2.3.15)

dahyamāno gatamatirbhrāntastāteti cākulaḥ | vadatyasakṛdudvagno na śāntimadhigacchati

burning, his senses gone, bewildered and distraught, he cries out again and again 'O father!', yet finds no peace anywhere.

Verse 16 (garuda.2.3.16)

evaṁ tasmānnarairmokṣastvatikrāntairavāpyate | varṣāyutāyutaiḥ pāpaṁ yaiḥ kṛtaṁ duṣṭabuddhibhiḥ

It is only after passing through this, over countless myriads of years, that release is obtained by men who, in their utter perversity, have committed such sin.

Verse 17 (garuda.2.3.17)

tathānyastu tato nāma so'tiśītaḥ svabhāvataḥ | mahārauravavaddīrghastathāndhatamasā vṛtaḥ

After this comes another, one which by its very nature is intensely cold, as vast as Maharaurava, and shrouded in blinding darkness.

Verse 18 (garuda.2.3.18)

śītārtāstatra badhyante narāstamasi dāruṇe | parasparaṁ samāsādya parirabhyāśrayanti te

Tormented by cold, men are bound fast within that dreadful darkness; drawing close to one another, they embrace and cling for shelter,

Verse 19 (garuda.2.3.19)

dantāsteṣāṁ ca bhajyante śītārtiparikampitāḥ | kṣutṛṣātibalāḥ pakṣinnatha tatrāpyupadavāḥ

their teeth shattering as they shudder with the agony of cold; and, O bird, weakened utterly by hunger and thirst, other torments beset them there besides —

Verse 20 (garuda.2.3.20)

himakhaṇḍavaho vāyubhinattyasthīni dāruṇaḥ | majjāsṛgasthigalitamaśrantyatra kṣudhānvitāḥ

a dreadful wind laden with shards of ice splits their very bones; driven mad with hunger, they eat there the marrow, blood, and bone-splinters that fall,

Verse 21 (garuda.2.3.21)

āliṁgyamānā bhrāmyante parasparasamāgame | evaṁ tatrāpi sumahānkleśastamasi mānavaiḥ

and, locked in embrace, they wander about, meeting one another again and again. Thus, O best of birds, in that darkness too, an immense affliction

Verse 22 (garuda.2.3.22)

prāpyate śakuniśreṣṭha yo bahūkṛtasañcayaḥ | nikṛntana iti khyātastato'nyo narakottamaḥ

is undergone by one who has amassed much [wealth unjustly]. After this comes yet another foremost hell, known by the name Nikrintana.

Verse 23 (garuda.2.3.23)

kulālacakrāṇi tatra bhrāmyantyavirataṁ khaga | teṣvāpāṣye nikṛṣyante kālasūtreṇa mānavāḥ

There, O bird, wheels like a potter's turn without ceasing; upon them men are sliced apart, from the feet upward, by the thread of Time,

Verse 24 (garuda.2.3.24)

yamānumāṁgulisthena āpādatalamastakam | na caiṣāṁ jīvitabhraṁśo jāyate pakṣisattama

cut by Yama's servant from toe to crown of the head; and yet, O best of birds, their life does not depart.

Verse 25 (garuda.2.3.25)

chinnāni teṣāṁ śataśaḥ khaṇḍānyaikyaṁ vrajanti hi | evaṁ varṣasahasrāṇi bhrāmyante pāpakarmiṇaḥ

Even when cut into hundreds of pieces, they come together again as one. Thus the sinful wander for thousands of years,

Verse 26 (garuda.2.3.26)

tāvadyāvadaśeṣaṁ ca tatpāpaṁ saṁkṣayaṁ gatam | aprātaṣṭhaṁ ca narakaṁ śṛṇuṣva gadato mama

until every last portion of their sin has been utterly exhausted. Now hear also, as I tell it, of the hell called Apratishtha.

Verse 27 (garuda.2.3.27)

tatrasthairnārakairduḥ khamasahyamanubhūyate | tānyeva tatra cakrāṇi ghaṭīyantrāṇi cānyataḥ

The denizens of hell dwelling there endure unbearable suffering; there too are those same wheels, and elsewhere, water-wheels of torment,

Verse 28 (garuda.2.3.28)

duḥ khasya hetubhūtāni pāpakarmakṛtāṁ nṛṇām | cakreṣvāropitāḥ kecidbhāmyante tatra mānavāḥ

which serve as the cause of suffering for men who have done evil deeds. Some men are mounted upon those wheels and spun round,

Verse 29 (garuda.2.3.29)

yāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi na teṣāṁ sthitirantarā | ghaṭīyantreṣu badvā ye baddhā toyavaṭī yathā

and for thousands of years there comes no pause in their state; those bound within the water-wheels, as pots are bound upon a well-wheel,

Verse 30 (garuda.2.3.30)

bhrāmyante mānavā raktamudgirantaḥ punaḥ punaḥ | antrairmukhaviniṣkrāntairnetrairantrāvalambibhaiḥ

are whirled round and round, vomiting blood again and again, their entrails hanging out through their mouths, their eyes tangled in those very entrails,

Verse 31 (garuda.2.3.31)

duḥ khāni prāpnuvantīha yānyasahyāni jantubhiḥ | asipatravanaṁ nāma narakaṁ śṛṇu cāparam

and here they endure sufferings unbearable to any living creature. Now hear of another hell, named Asipatravana.

Verse 32 (garuda.2.3.32)

yojanānāṁ sahasraṁ yo jvalatyagnyāśṛtāvaniḥ | saptatīvrakarāścaiṇḍaryatra tīvra sudāruṇe

There, a ground stretching a thousand yojanas blazes, encircled by flames of fire; there too the sun, with its rays intensely searing,

Verse 33 (garuda.2.3.33)

pratapanti sadā tatra prāṇino narakaukasaḥ | tanmadhye caraṇaṁ śītasnigdhapatraṁ vibhāṣyate

forever scorches the beings of that hell. In its midst appears a forest of cool, glossy leaves,

Verse 34 (garuda.2.3.34)

patrāṇi yatra khaṇḍāni phalānāṁ pakṣisattama | śvānaśca tatra subalāścarantyāmiṣabhojanāḥ

O best of birds, whose leaves seem like the very slices of ripe fruit. There, powerful dogs, feeding on flesh, roam about,

Verse 35 (garuda.2.3.35)

mahāvaktrā mahādaṁṣṭrā vyāghrā iva mahābalāḥ | tataśca vanamālokya śiśiracchāyamagrataḥ

great-mouthed, fanged like tigers in their strength. Then, seeing that forest before them with its inviting cool shade,

Verse 36 (garuda.2.3.36)

prayānti prāṇinastatra kṣuttāpaparipīḍitāḥ | mātarbhrātastāta iti krandamānāḥ suduḥ khitāḥ

the creatures, tormented by hunger and heat, rush toward it, crying out most piteously, 'O mother, brother, father!',

Verse 37 (garuda.2.3.37)

dahyamānāṁghriyugalā dharaṇisthena vahninā | teṣāṁ gatānāṁ tatrāpi ati śītiḥ samīraṇaḥ

the very ground burning beneath their feet with fire all the while. Yet even on reaching there, an intensely icy wind

Verse 38 (garuda.2.3.38)

pravāti tena pātyante teṣāṁ khaḍgāstathopari | chinnāḥ patanti te bhūmau jvalatpāvakasaṁcaye

blows upon them, and by it the sword-like leaves above are made to fall. Cut down, they drop to the ground into heaps of blazing fire,

Verse 39 (garuda.2.3.39)

lelihyamāne cānyatra taptāśeṣamahītale | sārameyāśca te śīghraṁ śātayanti śarīrataḥ

and elsewhere, upon the scorching ground that licks at everything, the dogs swiftly rend their bodies apart.

Verse 40 (garuda.2.3.40)

teṣāṁ khaṇḍānyanekāni rudatāmatibhīṣaṇe | asipatravanaṁ tāta mayaitatparikīrtitam

Amid the most fearful wailing, their bodies are torn into countless pieces. This, dear one, is the hell Asipatravana as I have described it to you.

Verse 41 (garuda.2.3.41)

ataḥ paraṁ bhīmataraṁ taptakuṁbhaṁ nibodha me | samantatastaptakumbhā vahnijvālāsamanvitāḥ

Beyond this, hear of the still more terrible hell called Taptakumbha. There, on every side, stand heated cauldrons wreathed in flames of fire,

Verse 42 (garuda.2.3.42)

jvaladagnicayāstaptatailāyaścūrṇapūritāḥ | eṣu duṣkṛtakarmāṇo yāmyaiḥ kṣiptā hyadhomukhāḥ

brimming with blazing fire, filled with heated oil and iron filings. Into these the messengers of Yama hurl evildoers head downward,

Verse 43 (garuda.2.3.43)

kvāthyante visphuṭadgātrā galanmajjājalānvitāḥ | sphuṭatkapālenatrāsthicchidyamānā vibhīṣaṇaiḥ

where their limbs, splitting open, are boiled, their marrow and body-fluids streaming out; their skulls burst, and dreadful vultures tear their bones apart,

Verse 44 (garuda.2.3.44)

gṛdhrairutpāṭya mucyante punasteṣveva vegitaiḥ | punaścimacimāyante tailanaikyaṁ vrajanti ca

plucked out by swooping vultures, only to be dropped again into those very same cauldrons; and again they writhe, sizzling, merging with the oil,

Verse 45 (garuda.2.3.45)

dravībhūtaiḥ śirogātraiḥ snāyumāṁsatvagāsthibhiḥ | tato yāmyairnarairāśu darvyāghaṭṭanaghaṭṭitāḥ

their heads and limbs melting away, along with sinew, flesh, skin, and bone, and mingling with the oil; then, swiftly stirred by Yama's servants with a great ladle,

Verse 46 (garuda.2.3.46)

kṛtāvarte mahātaile kvāthyante pāpakarmiṇaḥ | eṣa te vistareṇoktastaptakumbho mayā khaga

the sinners are boiled in that vast whirlpool of oil. This, O bird, is the hell Taptakumbha, as I have described it to you in full.

Verse 47 (garuda.2.3.47)

ādimo rauravaḥ prokto mahārauravako'paraḥ | atiśītastṛtīyastu caturtho hi nikṛntanaḥ

The first was declared as Raurava, the second Maharaurava; the third is Atishita, the fourth is Nikrintana,

Verse 48 (garuda.2.3.48)

apratiṣṭhaḥ pañcamaḥ syādasipatravano'paraḥ | saptamastaptakumbhastu saptaite narakā matāḥ

the fifth Apratishtha, another Asipatravana; the seventh Taptakumbha — these are held to be the seven [chief] hells.

Verse 49 (garuda.2.3.49)

śrūyantenyānyapi tathā narakāṇi narādhamāḥ | karmaṇāṁ tāratamyena teṣuteṣu patanti hi

O basest of men, many other hells besides are spoken of, into which sinners fall according to the varying degree of their deeds.

Verse 50 (garuda.2.3.50)

tathā hi narako rodhaḥ śūkarastāla eva ca | taptakumbho mahājvālaḥ śabalo'tha vimohanaḥ

Thus there are: Rodha, Shukara, Tala, Taptakumbha, Mahajvala, Shabala, Vimohana,

Verse 51 (garuda.2.3.51)

krimiśca krimabhakṣaśca lālābhakṣo viṣañjanaḥ | adhaḥ śirāḥ pūyavaho rudhirāndhaśca viḍrabhujaḥ

Krimi, Krimibhaksha, Lalabhaksha, Vishasana, Adhahshiras, Puyavaha, Rudhirandha, Vidbhuja,

Verse 52 (garuda.2.3.52)

tathā vaitaraṇī sū (mū) masipatravanaṁ tathā | agnijvālo mahāghoraḥ sandaṁśo vāpyabhojanaḥ

Vaitarani, [a hell whose name the manuscript renders uncertainly], and Asipatravana again; Agnijvala, Mahaghora, Sandansha, and Abhojana —

Verse 53 (garuda.2.3.53)

tamaśca kālasūtraṁ ca lohaścāpyabhidastathā | apratiṣṭho'pyavīciśca narakā evamādayaḥ

Tamas, Kalasutra, Loha, Abhida, Apratishtha, and Avichi as well — such are these hells, and others like them.

Verse 54 (garuda.2.3.54)

tāmasā narakāḥ sarve yamasya viṣaye sthitāḥ | yeṣu duṣkṛtakarmāṇaḥ patanti hi pṛthakpṛthak

All these hells of darkness lie within Yama's domain, and into them evildoers fall, each into his own.

Verse 55 (garuda.2.3.55)

bhūmeradhastātte sarve rauravādyāḥ prakīrtitāḥ | rogho goghno bhrūṇahā ca agnidātā naraḥ patet

All these — Raurava and the rest — are declared to lie beneath the earth. The killer of a man, of a cow, of an unborn child, and the one who kindles the funeral fire — such a man falls into the hell called Rodha.

Verse 56 (garuda.2.3.56)

sūkare brahmahā majjetsurāpaḥ svarṇataskaraḥ | tāle patetkṣattrahantā hatvā vaiśyaṁ ca durgatiḥ

The killer of a brahmin sinks in the hell Shukara, along with the drinker of liquor and the thief of gold; into Tala falls the killer of a kshatriya, and he who slays a vaishya likewise meets an evil fate.

Verse 57 (garuda.2.3.57)

brahmahatyāṁ ca yaḥ kuryādyaśca syādgurutalpagaḥ | svasṛgāmī taptakumbhī tathā rājabhaṭo'nṛtī

He who commits the killing of a brahmin, and he who defiles his guru's wife, one who unites with his own sister, and a king's soldier who speaks falsely — these go to Taptakumbha;

Verse 58 (garuda.2.3.58)

taptalohaiśca vikretā tathā bandhanarakṣitā | mādhvī vikrayakartāṁ ca yastu bhaktaṁ parityajet

so too the seller of heated iron, the keeper of a prison, the seller of intoxicating liquor, and one who abandons his dependent.

Verse 59 (garuda.2.3.59)

mahājvālī duhitaraṁ snuṣāṁ gacchati yastu vai | vedo vikrīyate yaiśca vedaṁ dūṣayate tu yaḥ

One who unites with his own daughter or daughter-in-law goes to Mahajvala; likewise those who sell the Veda, and one who corrupts the Veda,

Verse 60 (garuda.2.3.60)

guruṁ caivāvamanyante vākśaraistāḍayanti ca | agamyāgāmī ca naro narakaṁ śabalaṁ vrajet

those who dishonor their guru and strike him with arrows of speech, and the man who unites with a forbidden woman — he goes to the hell Shabala.

Verse 61 (garuda.2.3.61)

vimohe patate śūre maryādāṁ yo bhinatti vai | duriṣṭaṁ kurute yastu kṛmibhakṣaṁ prapadyate

The valorous man who breaks the bounds of propriety falls into Vimohana; he who performs an ill-intentioned sacrifice attains Krimibhaksha.

Verse 62 (garuda.2.3.62)

devabrāhmaṇavidveṣṭā lālābhakṣe patatyapi | kuṇḍakartā kulālaśca nyāsahartā cikitsakaḥ

One who bears hatred toward gods and brahmins falls likewise into Lalabhaksha; the begetter of illegitimate offspring, the potter, the misappropriator of a deposit, the physician,

Verse 63 (garuda.2.3.63)

ārāmeṣvagnidātā ca ete yānti viṣañjane | asatpratigrahī yastu tathaivāyājyayājakaḥ

and one who sets fire to gardens — these go to Vishasana. One who accepts improper gifts, and likewise one who officiates sacrifice for the unworthy,

Verse 64 (garuda.2.3.64)

na kṣattrairjovate yastu naro gacchedadhomukham | kṣīraṁ surāṁ ca māsaṁ lākṣāṁ gandhaṁ rasaṁ tilān

and the kshatriya who fails to protect his subjects — such a man goes to Adhahshiras. Milk, liquor, meat, lac, fragrance, essence, and sesame —

Verse 65 (garuda.2.3.65)

evamādīni vikrīṇan ghore pūyavahe patet | yaḥ kukkuṭānnibadhnāti mārjārān sūkarāṁśca tān | pakṣiṇaśca mṛgāṁśchā gānso'pyevaṁ narakaṁ vrajet

he who sells such goods falls into the dreadful Puyavaha. He who binds cocks, cats, pigs, birds, deer, and goats also attains that same hell.

Verse 66 (garuda.2.3.66)

ājāviko māhiṣikastathā cakrī dhvajī ca yaḥ | raṁgopajīviko vipraḥ śākunirgrāmayājakaḥ

The keeper of goats or buffalo, the wheel-user, the flag-bearer, the brahmin who lives by the theatre, the bird-catcher, the village priest,

Verse 67 (garuda.2.3.67)

agāradāhī garadaḥ kuṇḍāśī somavikrayī | surāpo māṁsabhakṣī ca tathā ca paśughātakaḥ

the house-burner, the poisoner, the eater of a kunda's food, the seller of soma, the drinker of liquor, the meat-eater, and the slayer of animals —

Verse 68 (garuda.2.3.68)

rudhirāndhe patantyete patantyete evamāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ | upaviṣṭantvekapaṁktyāṁ viṣaṁ sambhojayanti ye

these fall into Rudhirandha — so say the wise. Those who, sitting in a common row, feed one another poison,

Verse 69 (garuda.2.3.69)

patanti niraye ghore viḍbhuje nātra saṁśayaḥ | madhugrāho vaitaraṇīmākrośī mūtrasaṁjñake

fall without doubt into that dreadful hell Vidbhuja. The stealer of honey falls into Vaitarani, and the reviler into the hell called Mutra,

Verse 70 (garuda.2.3.70)

asipatravane'saucī krodhanaśca etedapi | agnijvālāṁ mṛgavyādho bhojyate yatra vāyasaiḥ

into Asipatravana falls the unclean and the wrathful man; and the hunter who slays deer falls into Agnijvala, there to be devoured by crows.

Verse 71 (garuda.2.3.71)

ijyāyāṁ vratalopācca sandaṁśe narake patet | skandante yadi vā svapne yatino brahmacāriṇaḥ

One who breaks a vow, whether in sacrifice or otherwise, falls into the hell Sandansha; and ascetics and celibate students who fall from their vow even in a dream,

Verse 72 (garuda.2.3.72)

putrairadhyāpitā ye ca putrairājñāpitāśca ye | te sarve narakaṁ yānti nirayaṁ cāpyabhojanam

and those who are taught by their own sons, or commanded by their own sons — all these go to the dreadful hell called Abhojana.

Verse 73 (garuda.2.3.73)

varṇāśramaviruddhāni krodhaharṣasamanvitāḥ | karmāṇi ye tu kurvanti sarve nirayavāsinaḥ

Those who, moved by anger or elation, perform deeds contrary to their varna and ashrama — all of them become dwellers in hell.

Verse 74 (garuda.2.3.74)

upariṣṭātsthito ghora uṣṇātmā rauravo mahān | sudāruṇaḥ suśītātmā tasyā dhastāmasaḥ smṛtaḥ

Above lies the terrible, fiercely hot great Raurava; beneath it lies the equally terrible, intensely cold hell called Tamas.

Verse 75 (garuda.2.3.75)

evamādikrameṇaiva sarve'dho'dhaḥ paristhitāḥ | duḥ khotkarṣaśca sarveṣu karmasvapi nimittataḥ

In this same order, all the hells lie one below another still further; and in all of them, the degree of suffering varies according to the deeds that caused it,

Verse 76 (garuda.2.3.76)

sukhotkarṣaśca sarvatra dharmasyehanimitataḥ | paśyantinarakāndevā hyadhovaktrānsudāruṇān

just as, everywhere, the degree of happiness varies according to the practice of dharma. The gods look down upon these terrible hells with their mouths turned downward,

Verse 77 (garuda.2.3.77)

nārakāścāpi te devānsarvānpaśyanti ūrdhvagān | etānyānyāni śataśo narakāṇi viyadgate

and the beings of hell likewise behold all the gods rising above. These, and hundreds of others like them, are the hells that stretch on into the reaches of the sky.

Verse 78 (garuda.2.3.78)

dinedine tu narake pacyate dahyatenyataḥ | śīryate bhidyate'nyatra cūryate klidyatenyataḥ

Day after day, the sinner in hell is cooked in one place, burned in another; torn apart and broken elsewhere, pulverized in one spot and dissolved in another,

Verse 79 (garuda.2.3.79)

kvathyate dīpyate'nyatra tathā vātahato'nyataḥ | ekaṁ dinaṁ varṣaśatapramāṇaṁ narake bhavet

boiled in one place, set ablaze in another, and battered by wind elsewhere. In hell, a single day equals a hundred years.

Verse 80 (garuda.2.3.80)

tataḥ sarveṣu nistīrṇaḥ pāpī tiryaktvamaśnate | kṛmikīṭapataṁgeṣu sthāvaraikaśapheṣu ca

Having passed through all these, the sinner attains the animal state — born as a worm, an insect, a moth, a plant, and among single-hoofed animals,

Verse 81 (garuda.2.3.81)

gatvā vanagajāḍhyeṣu goṣvaṣu tathaiva ca | kharo'śvo'śvataro gauraḥ śarabhaścamarī tathā

born among the elephants of the forest, and among cattle. The ass, the horse, the mule, the wild ox, the sharabha, and the yak —

Verse 82 (garuda.2.3.82)

ete caikaśaphāḥ ṣaṭca śṛṇu pañcanakhānataḥ | anyāsu bahupāpāsu duḥ khadāsu ca yo niṣu

these six are the single-hoofed creatures; now hear of the five-clawed. After wandering through many other sinful and sorrowful wombs,

Verse 83 (garuda.2.3.83)

mānuṣyaṁ prāpyate kubjo kutsito vāmano'pi vā | caṇḍālapukkasādyāsu narayoniṣu jāyate

a human birth is at last attained — but even so, hunchbacked, despised, or dwarfish; he is born in the debased human classes such as the chandala and the pukkasa.

Verse 84 (garuda.2.3.84)

muhurgarbhe vasantyeva mriyante ca muhurmuhuḥ | avaśiṣṭena pāpena puṇyena ca samanvitaḥ

Again and again he dwells in the womb, and again and again he dies; still bearing what remains of both his sin and his merit,

Verse 85 (garuda.2.3.85)

tataścārohiṇīṁ yoniṁ śūdravaiśyanṛpādikam | vipradevendratāṁ cāpi kadācidadhirohati

he then attains the ascending path — as shudra, vaishya, king, and so on — and at times even rises to the state of a brahmin or of Indra himself.

Verse 86 (garuda.2.3.86)

evaṁ tu pāpakarmāṇo nirayeṣu patantyadhaḥ | yathā puṇyakṛto yānti tanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu

Thus do those of sinful deeds fall down through the hells. Now hear from me how those of meritorious deeds ascend.

Verse 87 (garuda.2.3.87)

te yamena vinirdiṣṭāṁ yoniṁ puṇyagatiṁ narāḥ | pragītagandharvagaṇā nṛtyotsavasamākulāḥ

Having attained, as appointed by Yama, the meritorious path, those men, amid throngs of singing gandharvas and festivals of dance,

Verse 88 (garuda.2.3.88)

hāranūpuramādhuryaiḥ śobhitānyamalāni tu | prayāntyāśu vimānāni divyagandhasragujjvalāḥ

ascend swiftly upon spotless celestial chariots, adorned with the sweet music of garlands and anklets, resplendent with divine fragrant garlands.

Verse 89 (garuda.2.3.89)

tasmācca pracyutā rājñāmanyeṣāṁ ca mahātmanām | jāyante nīrujāṁ gehe sa dvṛttipīrapālakāḥ

Falling from that state, they are born in the households of kings and other great souls, or in the homes of those free from disease,

Verse 90 (garuda.2.3.90)

bhogānsamprāpnuvantyugrāṁstato yāntyūrdhvamanyathā | avarohiṇīṁ samprāpya pūrvavadyanti mānavāḥ

and attain excellent enjoyments; then they rise still higher — or else, attaining the descending path, men proceed again as before, back into the round of rebirth.

Verse 91 (garuda.2.3.91)

jātasya mṛtyuloke vai prāṇino maraṇaṁ dhruvam | pāpiṣṭhānāmadomārgājjīvo niṣkramate dhruvam

For every creature born in the realm of death, dying is certain; and for the utterly sinful, the soul departs, without fail, by the lower passage of the body.

Verse 92 (garuda.2.3.92)

pṛthivyāṁ līyate pṛthvī āpaścaiva tathāpsu ca | tejastejasi līyate samīre ca samīraṇaḥ

The element of earth dissolves into earth, water into water; fire dissolves into fire, and air into air.

Verse 93 (garuda.2.3.93)

ākāśe ca tathākāśaṁ sarvavyāpi niśākare | tatra kāmastathā krodhaḥ kāye pañcendriyāṇi ca

Space dissolves into space, pervading all things up to the moon itself. And in the body, desire, anger, and the five senses too —

Verse 94 (garuda.2.3.94)

ete tārkṣya samākhyātā dehe tiṣṭhanti taskarāḥ | kāmaḥ krodho hyahaṁkāro manastatraiva nāyakaḥ

these, O Tarkshya, are said to dwell in the body as thieves — desire, anger, ego, and the mind, foremost among them there,

Verse 95 (garuda.2.3.95)

saṁhāraścaiva kālo'sau puṇyapāpena saṁyutaḥ | pañcendriyasamāyuktaḥ sakalairvibudhaiḥ saha

and this all-destroying Time as well, accompanied by merit and sin, together with the five senses and all the presiding deities,

Verse 96 (garuda.2.3.96)

praviśetsa nave dehe pṛhe daradhe guhī yathā | śarīre ye samāsīnāḥ sarve vai sapta dhātavaḥ

enters a new body just as a householder enters his own house. And the seven bodily elements that reside within the body,

Verse 97 (garuda.2.3.97)

ṣāṭkauśiko hyayaṁ kāyaḥ sarve vātāśca dehinām | mūtraṁ purīṣaṁ tadyogādye cānye vyādhayastathā

this body is composed of six sheaths — all the vital airs of living beings, urine, excrement, and the other ailments born of their combination,

Verse 98 (garuda.2.3.98)

pittaṁ śleṣmā tathā majjā māṁsaṁ vai meda eva ca | asthi śukraṁ tathā snāyurdehena saha dahyati

bile, phlegm, marrow, flesh, fat, bone, seed, and sinew — all of these perish along with the body.

Verse 99 (garuda.2.3.99)

eṣa te kathitastārkṣya vināsaḥ sarvadehinam | kathayāmi punasteṣāṁ śarīraṁ ca yathā bhavet

This, O Tarkshya, is the dissolution of all embodied beings, as I have told you. Now let me tell you again how their body comes to be formed.

Verse 100 (garuda.2.3.100)

ekastambaṁsnāyubaddhaṁ sthūṇātrayavibhūṣaṇam | indriyaiśca samāyuktaṁ navadvāraṁ śarīrakam

It is a small dwelling built upon a single pillar, bound together by sinews, adorned with three supporting posts, furnished with the senses, and possessing nine gateways,

Verse 101 (garuda.2.3.101)

viṣayaiśca samākrāntaṁ kāmakrodhasamākulam | rāgadveṣasamākīrṇaṁ tṛṣṇādurgamataskaram

besieged by the objects of sense, thrown into turmoil by desire and anger, filled with attachment and hatred, beset by the elusive thief that is craving,

Verse 102 (garuda.2.3.102)

lobhajālaparicchinnaṁ mohavastreṇa veṣṭitam | subaddhaṁ māyayā caitallobhenādhiṣṭhitaṁ puram

hemmed in by the net of greed, wrapped in the garment of delusion, well bound by illusion, and this very city ruled over by greed,

Verse 103 (garuda.2.3.103)

filled with these very qualities is the body of every embodied being. Those men who do not know the Self are reckoned no better than beasts.

Verse 104 (garuda.2.3.104)

evameva samākhyātaṁ śarīraṁ te caturvidham | caturaśītilakṣāṇi nirmitā yonayaḥ purā

Thus has this fourfold body been described to you. In ancient times, eighty-four hundred thousand species were created —

Verse 105 (garuda.2.3.105)

udbhijjāḥ svedajāścaiva aṇḍajāśca jarāyujāḥ | etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ nirayasya prapañcataḥ

the sprout-born, the sweat-born, the egg-born, and the womb-born. All this has now been told to you, as a full unfolding of the subject of hell.

Verse 106 (garuda.2.3.106)

athayāmi kramaprāptaṁ praṣṭu vā vartate spṛhā

Now, in due course, I wish to ask further of what remains — if you are willing.
