Uttarakhanda · Chapter 5
The Sixteen Shraddhas and the Soul's Journey Through the Sixteen Cities
Verse 1 (garuda.2.5.1)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca | evaṁ dagdhvā naraṁ pretaṁ snātvā kṛtvā tilodakam | agrataḥ strījano gacchedvrajeyuḥ pṛṣṭhato narāḥ
Shri Krishna said: Having thus cremated the departed one, and having bathed and offered water with sesame, the women should walk in front, and the men behind.
Verse 2 (garuda.2.5.2)
prāśayennimbapatrāṇi rudanto nāmapūrvakam | vidhātavyaṁ cācamanaṁ pāṣāṇopari saṁsthite
Weeping, calling the name of the deceased, they should chew neem leaves; seated upon a stone, the sipping of water for purification should be performed.
Verse 3 (garuda.2.5.3)
te praviśya gṛhaṁ sarve sutādyāśca sapiṇḍakāḥ | bhaveyurdaśarātraṁ vai yata āśaucakaṁ khaga
Then all of them — the sons and the other kinsmen — having entered the house, O bird, should remain in the state of impurity for ten nights,
Verse 4 (garuda.2.5.4)
krītalabdhāśanāḥ sarve svapeyuste pṛthakpṛthak | akṣāralavaṇānnāḥ syurnimajjeyuśca te tryaham
eating only food that was purchased or given as alms, sleeping each apart from the others; they should eat food free of alkali and salt, and bathe for three days,
Verse 5 (garuda.2.5.5)
amāṁsabhojanāścādhaḥ śayīranbrahmacāriṇaḥ | parasparaṁ na saṁspṛṣṭā dānādhyayanavarjitāḥ
eating no meat, sleeping on the ground, observing celibacy; they should not touch one another, and should abstain from giving gifts and from study.
Verse 6 (garuda.2.5.6)
malināścādhomukhāśca dīnā bhogavivarjitāḥ | aṁgasaṁvāhanaṁ keśamārjanaṁ varjayanti te
They should remain unkempt and downcast, humble and free of pleasures; they should abstain from massaging the limbs and from combing the hair.
Verse 7 (garuda.2.5.7)
mṛnmaye patraje vāpi bhuñjīraṁste ca bhājane | uvāsantu te kuryurekāhamatha vā tryaham
They should eat only from a vessel of clay or of leaves; all this they should observe for one day, or for three days.
Verse 8 (garuda.2.5.8)
garuḍa uvāca | āśaucina iti proktamāśaucasya ca vai prabho | lakṣaṇaṁ kiṁ kiyatkālaṁ bhāvyaṁ vā tadyutairnaraiḥ
Garuda said: O Lord, what is the mark of this 'ashaucha' (impurity) of which you speak, and for how long must men affected by it remain in that state?
Verse 9 (garuda.2.5.9)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca | apanodyantvidaṁ kālādibhirāśu niṣedhakṛt | piṇḍādhyayanadānādeḥ puṁgato'tiśayo hi tat
Shri Krishna said: This impurity is swiftly removed by time and other means; it is the cause of the prohibition of the pinda-rite, study, gift-giving, and the rest, and it varies in degree according to closeness of kinship.
Verse 10 (garuda.2.5.10)
daśāhaṁ śāvamāśaucaṁ sapiṇḍeṣu vidhīyate | janane'pyevameva syānnipuṇaṁ śuddhimicchatām
The impurity of death is ordained for ten days among those of the same lineage-offering; for the impurity of birth too, this same rule applies precisely for those who seek purity.
Verse 11 (garuda.2.5.11)
janmanyekodakānāntutrirātrācchuddhiriṣyate | śāvasya śeṣācchudhyanti tryahādudakadāyinaḥ
At a birth, purity for the more distant water-kin (sahodaka) is achieved in three nights; for the remainder of the death-impurity, those who offer only the water-rite are purified in three days.
Verse 12 (garuda.2.5.12)
ādantajananatsadya ā caulānnaiśikī smṛtā | trirātramā vratādeśāddaśarātramataḥ param
Up to the cutting of the first teeth, purity is immediate; up to the tonsure ceremony, the impurity called 'naishiki' (of a single night) is declared; up to the vow-initiation, three nights; and beyond that, ten nights.
Verse 13 (garuda.2.5.13)
āśaucaṁ te samākhyātaṁ saṁkṣepātprakṛtaṁ bruve | jalaṁ tridivamākāśe sthāpyaṁ kṣīrañca mṛnmaye
This, in brief, is the description of ashaucha I have given you; now I return to the main subject. For three days, water should be kept aloft, and milk in an earthen vessel,
Verse 14 (garuda.2.5.14)
atra snāhi pibātreti mantreṇānena kāśyapa | kāṣṭhatraye guṇairbaddhe prītyai rātrau catuṣpathe
O Kashyapa, with the words 'bathe here, drink here', three sticks bound together with a cord should, out of affection, be set at the crossroads at night.
Verse 15 (garuda.2.5.15)
prathame'hni tṛtīye vā saptame navame tathā | asthisaṁcayanaṁ kāryaṁ dine tadgotrajaiḥ saha
On the first day, or the third, seventh, or ninth, O bird, the gathering of the bones should be performed that same day, together with those of the same lineage.
Verse 16 (garuda.2.5.16)
tadūrdhvamaṁgasaṁsparśaḥ sapiṇḍānāṁ vidhīyate | yogyāḥ sarvakriyāṇāṁ ca samānasalilāstathā
Only after that is bodily contact permitted for those of the same lineage-offering; only then do they become fit for all rites, and fit to share water together.
Verse 17 (garuda.2.5.17)
pretapiṇḍaṁ bahirdadyāddarbhamātravivarjitam | prāgudīcyāṁ caruṁ kṛtvā snātvā prayatamānasaḥ
The preta-pinda should be given outside the house, without kusha grass; having prepared the chāru offering facing east or north, and having bathed, with a controlled mind,
Verse 18 (garuda.2.5.18)
bhūmāvasaṁskṛtānāṁ ca saṁskṛtānāṁ kuśeṣu ca | navabhirdivasaiḥ piṇḍānnava dadyātsamāhitaḥ
either unconsecrated upon the bare ground or consecrated upon kusha grass, nine pindas should be carefully given over nine days.
Verse 19 (garuda.2.5.19)
daśamaṁ piṇḍamutsṛjya rātriśeṣe śucirbhavet | asagotraḥ sagotro vā yadi strī yati vā pumān
Having offered the tenth pinda, purity should be attained during the remainder of that night — whether one is of the same gotra or not, whether woman or man.
Verse 20 (garuda.2.5.20)
prathame'hani yo dadyātsa daśāhaṁ samāpayet | śālinā saktubhirvāpi śākairvāpyatha nirvapet
He who gives it on the first day should complete it over ten days; the offering may be made with rice, with parched grain-flour, or even with vegetables.
Verse 21 (garuda.2.5.21)
prathame'hani yaddravyaṁ tadeva syāddaśāhikam | yāvadāśaucamekaikasyāñjalerdānamucyate
Whatever substance is given on the first day should be given all ten days. Throughout the period of impurity, one palmful of water is said to be given each day.
Verse 22 (garuda.2.5.22)
yadvā yasmindine dānaṁ tasmiṁstaddinasaṁkhyayā | daśāhe'ñjalayaḥ pakṣinpañcāśadantime
Or, on whichever day, the number given should equal that day's count; O bird, on the tenth day there are fifty palmfuls, on the last day,
Verse 23 (garuda.2.5.23)
dvivṛddhyā vā bhavetpakṣinnañjalīnāṁ śataṁ punaḥ | yadā hi tryahamāśaucaṁ tadā vāñjalayo daśa
or, O bird, increasing by two each time, the palmfuls again reach a hundred. When the impurity lasts three days, the palmfuls number ten —
Verse 24 (garuda.2.5.24)
trayo'ñjalaya evaṁ tu prathame'hani vai tadā | catvārastu dvitīye'hni tṛtīye syustrayastathā
thus on the first day there are three palmfuls, on the second four, and on the third again three.
Verse 25 (garuda.2.5.25)
śatāñjali yadā pakṣinnādye triṁśattadāhani | catvāriṁśaddvitīye'hni triṁśadahni tṛtīyake
O bird, when the total is to be a hundred palmfuls, then thirty on the first day, forty on the second, and thirty on the third.
Verse 26 (garuda.2.5.26)
evaṁ jalasyāñjalayo vibhājyāḥ pakṣayordvayoḥ | sarveṣu pitṛkāryeṣu putro mukhyo'dhikāravān
Thus the palmfuls of water should be apportioned across both fortnights. In every rite pertaining to the ancestors, the son is the principal authority.
Verse 27 (garuda.2.5.27)
piṇḍaprasekastūṣṇīñca puṣpadhūpādikaṁ tathā | daśame'hani samprāpte snānaṁ grāmādbahiścaret
The moistening of the pinda should be done in silence, as should the offering of flowers and incense. When the tenth day comes, one should bathe outside the village.
Verse 28 (garuda.2.5.28)
tatra tyājyāni vāsāṁsi keśaśmaśrunakhāni ca | vipraḥ śudhyatyapaḥ spṛṣṭvā kṣattriyo vāhanaṁ tathā
There, garments, hair, beard, and nails should be discarded. The brahmin is purified by touching water, the kshatriya by touching his mount,
Verse 29 (garuda.2.5.29)
vaiśyaḥ pratodaṁ raśmīnvā śūdro yaṣṭiṁ kṛtakriyaḥ | mṛtādalpavayobhiśca sapiṇḍaiḥ parivāpanam
the vaishya by touching his goad or reins, the shudra by touching his staff — thus completing the rite, each is purified. The shaving of hair should be done by kinsmen younger than the deceased.
Verse 30 (garuda.2.5.30)
kāryantu ṣoḍaśī ṣaḍbhiḥ piṇḍairdaśabhiraiva ca | prathamā malinā hyetairādaśāhaṁ mṛterbhavet
The shodashi (the sixteenfold shraddha) should be performed with six pindas or with ten. The first of these, within these days of impurity, extends over the ten days following death.
Verse 31 (garuda.2.5.31)
dināni daśa yānpiṇḍānkurvantyatra sutādayaḥ | pratyahaṁ te vibhajyante caturbhāgaiḥ khagottama
The ten pindas that the sons and others offer during these days, O best of birds, are each divided daily into four parts —
Verse 32 (garuda.2.5.32)
bhāgadvayena dehaḥ syāttṛtīyena yamānugāḥ | tṛpyanti hi caturthena svayamapyupajīvati
by two parts the body is formed, by the third the servants of Yama are satisfied, and by the fourth he himself is sustained.
Verse 33 (garuda.2.5.33)
ahorātraistu navabhirdeho niṣpattimāpnuyāt | śirastvādyena piṇḍena pretasya kriyate tathā
Over nine days and nights, the formation of the body is completed. By the first pinda the head of the departed is formed,
Verse 34 (garuda.2.5.34)
dvitīyena tu karṇākṣināsikaṁ tu samāsataḥ | galāṁsabhujavakṣaśca tṛtīyena tathā kramāt
by the second the ears, eyes, and nose, in brief; by the third the throat, shoulders, and chest — in this same order.
Verse 35 (garuda.2.5.35)
caturthena ca piṇḍena nābhiliṁgagudaṁ tathā | jānujaṁghaṁ tathā pādau pañcamena tu sarvadā
By the fourth pinda the navel, the organ, and the anus; by the fifth, always, the knees, shins, and both feet.
Verse 36 (garuda.2.5.36)
sarvamarmāṇi ṣaṣṭhena saptamena tu nāḍayaḥ | dantalomānyaṣṭamena vīryantu navamena ca
By the sixth all the vital points; by the seventh the channels; by the eighth the teeth and body-hair; by the ninth the vital seed,
Verse 37 (garuda.2.5.37)
daśamena tu pūrṇatvaṁ tṛptatā kṣudviparyayaḥ | madhyamāṁ ṣoḍaśīṁ vacmi vainateya śṛṇuṣva me
and by the tenth, fullness, satisfaction, and the removal of hunger. O son of Vinata, now I shall tell of the middle shodashi; hear it from me.
Verse 38 (garuda.2.5.38)
viṣṇavādiviṣṇuparyantānyekādaśa tathā khaga | śrāddhāni pañca devānāmityeṣāṁ madhyaṣoḍaśī
Eleven shraddhas, O bird, beginning and ending with Vishnu, together with the five shraddhas of the deities — these together make up the middle shodashi.
Verse 39 (garuda.2.5.39)
nimittaṁ durmatiṁ kṛtvā yadi nārāyaṇo baliḥ | ekādaśāhe kartavyo vṛṣotsargo'pi tatra vai
If, owing to some cause brought about through folly, the Narayana-bali becomes necessary, then on the eleventh day the vrishotsarga (release of a bull) should also be performed.
Verse 40 (garuda.2.5.40)
ekādaśāhe pretasya yasyotsṛjyeta no vṛṣaḥ | pretatvaṁ susthiraṁ tasya dattaiḥ śrāddhaśatairapi
For the departed for whom no bull is released on the eleventh day, the state of a preta remains fixed, even if hundreds of shraddhas are performed.
Verse 41 (garuda.2.5.41)
akṛtvā yadvṛṣotsargaṁ kṛtaṁ vai piṇḍapātanam | niṣphalaṁ sakalaṁ vidyātpramītāya na tadbhavet
Whatever pinda-offering is made without the vrishotsarga should be known as entirely fruitless; it avails the deceased nothing at all.
Verse 42 (garuda.2.5.42)
vṛṣotsargādṛte nānyatkiñcidasti mahītale | putraḥ patnyatha dauhitraḥ pitā vā duhitātha vā
There is nothing else on earth equal to the vrishotsarga. Whether it be the son, the wife, the daughter's son, the father, or the daughter,
Verse 43 (garuda.2.5.43)
mṛtādanantaraṁ tasya dhruvaṁ kāryo vṛṣotsavaḥ | caturvatsatarīyukto yasyotsṛjyeta vā vṛṣaḥ
immediately after that person's death the vrishotsava must certainly be performed for him. He for whom a bull, accompanied by four heifers,
Verse 44 (garuda.2.5.44)
alaṁkṛto vidhānena pretatvaṁ tasya no bhavet | ekādaśe'hni samprāpte vṛṣālābho bhavedyadi
duly adorned, is released — his state as a preta no longer remains. If, when the eleventh day arrives, a bull is not available,
Verse 45 (garuda.2.5.45)
darbhaiḥ piṣṭaistu sampādya taṁ vṛṣaṁ mocayedvudhaḥ | vṛṣotsarjanavelāyāṁ vṛṣābhāva (lābha) kathañcana
then the wise man should fashion that bull from pounded kusha grass and release it thus. At the time of vrishotsarga, if a bull cannot be obtained,
Verse 46 (garuda.2.5.46)
mṛttikābhistu darbhairvā vṛṣaṁ kṛtvā vimocayet | yadiṣṭaṁ jīvatastasya dadyādekādaśe'hani
a bull made from clay or from kusha grass should be released. Whatever would have been dear to him had he lived should be given on the eleventh day.
Verse 47 (garuda.2.5.47)
mṛtamuddiśya dātavyaṁ śayyādhenvādikaṁ tathā | viprānbahūn bhojayīta pretasya kṣudviśāntaye
A bed, a cow, and the like should also be given, dedicated to the deceased. To satisfy the departed's hunger, many brahmins should be given a feast.
Verse 48 (garuda.2.5.48)
tṛtīyāṁ ṣoḍaśīṁ vacmi vainateya śṛṇuṣva tām | dvādaśa pratimāsyāni ādyaṁ ṣāṇmāsikaṁ tathā
O son of Vinata, now I shall tell you of the third shodashi; hear it. The twelve monthly shraddhas, the first semi-annual shraddha,
Verse 49 (garuda.2.5.49)
sapiṇḍīkaraṇaṁ caiva tṛtīyā ṣoḍaśī matā | dvādaśāhe tripakṣe ca ṣaṇmāse māsike'bdike
and the sapindikarana — these together are held to be the third shodashi. On the twelfth day, in three fortnights, in six months, monthly, and yearly —
Verse 50 (garuda.2.5.50)
tṛtīyāṁ ṣoḍaśīmenāṁ vadanti matabhedataḥ | yasyaitāni na dattāni pretaśrāddhāni ṣoḍaśa
according to varying opinions, this third shodashi is placed at different times. He for whom these sixteen preta-shraddhas are not performed,
Verse 51 (garuda.2.5.51)
piśācatvaṁ sthiraṁ tasya dattaiḥ śrāddhaśatairapi | ekādaśe dvādaśe vā dine ādyaṁ prakīrtitam
his state as a pishacha remains fixed, even with hundreds of shraddhas offered. On the eleventh or twelfth day the first [monthly shraddha] is prescribed,
Verse 52 (garuda.2.5.52)
māsādau pratimāsañca śuddhaṁ mṛtatithau khaga | ekenāhnā tribhirvāpi hīneṣu vinatāsuta
O bird, and thereafter, on the death-anniversary of each month, the pure shraddha is performed. O son of Vinata, even if it falls short by one day or three,
Verse 53 (garuda.2.5.53)
māsaṣaṇmāsavarṣeṣu tripakṣeṣu bhavanti hi | śrāddhānyathasyātsāpiṇḍyaṁ pūrṇe varṣe tadardhake
these shraddhas do occur at the month, the half-year, the year, and the three-fortnight mark. Then the sapindya rite takes place at the completion of the full year, or at its half,
Verse 54 (garuda.2.5.54)
tripakṣe'bhyudaye vāpi dvādaśāhe'tha vā nṛṇām | ānantyātkuladharmāṇāṁ puṁsāñcaivāyuṣaḥ kṣayāt
at three fortnights, on an auspicious occasion, or even on the twelfth day — owing to the diversity of family customs among men, and owing to the brevity of human life,
Verse 55 (garuda.2.5.55)
asthiratvāccharīrasya dvādaśāhe praśasyate | sapiṇḍīkaraṇeṣvevaṁ vidhiṁ pakṣīndra me śṛṇu
and owing to the instability of the body, performing it on the twelfth day is praised. O lord of birds, hear from me the procedure of the sapindikarana.
Verse 56 (garuda.2.5.56)
ekoddiṣṭavidhānena kāryaṁ tadapi kāśyapa | tilagandhodakairyuktaṁ kuryātpātracatuṣṭayam
O Kashyapa, this too should be performed by the ekoddishta procedure. Four vessels should be prepared, filled with sesame and fragrant water —
Verse 57 (garuda.2.5.57)
pātraṁ pretasya tatraikaṁ pitryaṁ pātratrayaṁ tathā | secayetpitṛpātreṣu pretapātraṁ khaga triṣu
one vessel for the departed, and three for the ancestors. O bird, the departed's vessel should be poured into those three ancestral vessels,
Verse 58 (garuda.2.5.58)
caturo nirvapetpiṇḍānpūrvanteṣu samāpayet | tataḥ prabhṛti vai pretaḥ pitṛsāmānyamaśnute
and, having offered four pindas, it should be merged with the first three. From that moment, the departed attains the state common to the ancestors.
Verse 59 (garuda.2.5.59)
tataḥ pitṛtvamāpanne tasminprete khageśvara | śrāddhadharmairaśeṣaistu tatpūrvānarcayetpitṝn
O lord of birds, once that departed one has attained the state of an ancestor, his forebears among the ancestors should be worshipped through all the shraddha rites.
Verse 60 (garuda.2.5.60)
ekacityārohaṇe ca ekāhni maraṇe tathā | sāpiṇḍyantu striyā nāsti mṛte bhartuḥ striyo bhavet
By ascending the same pyre, or by dying on the same day, a wife's sapindikarana does not merge with her husband's simultaneously. Upon her husband's death, the wife remains, for a time, a departed spirit herself.
Verse 61 (garuda.2.5.61)
pākaikyamatha kālaikyaṁ kartraikyañca bhavetkhaga | śrāddhādau saha dāhe ca patipatnyorna saṁśayaḥ
Unity of the cooked offering, unity of time, and unity of the performer — these certainly hold for husband and wife in the shraddha rites and in the joint cremation; of this there is no doubt.
Verse 62 (garuda.2.5.62)
bharturmṛtatitheranyatithau citimathāruhet | tāṁmṛtāhani tu samprāpte pṛthakpiṇḍena yojayet
If she ascends the pyre on a date other than her husband's date of death, then on the day of her own death a separate pinda-offering should be performed for her.
Verse 63 (garuda.2.5.63)
pratyabdañca yugapattu samāpayet
Thereafter, every year, both [shraddhas] should be completed together.
Verse 64 (garuda.2.5.64)
yasya saṁvatsarādarvāksapiṇḍīkaraṇaṁ bhavet | māsikañcodakumbhañca deyaṁ tasyāpi vatsaram
For one whose sapindikarana takes place before the full year has elapsed, the monthly shraddha and the gift of the water-pot should still be given for the entire year.
Verse 65 (garuda.2.5.65)
navaśrāddhaṁ sapiṇḍatvaṁ śrāddhānyapi ca ṣoḍaśa | ekenaiva tu kāryāṇi saṁvibhaktadhaneṣvapi
The nine shraddhas, the sapindikarana, and the sixteen shraddhas as well — even among those with divided property, these should be performed by a single person.
Verse 66 (garuda.2.5.66)
pitāmahībhiḥ sāpiṇḍyaṁ tathā mātāmahaiḥ saha | uktaṁ bhartrāpi sāpiṇḍyaṁ striyā veṣayabhedataḥ
Sapindya also holds with paternal and maternal grandmothers, and likewise with maternal grandfathers. The wife's sapindya through her husband is also declared, differing according to gender.
Verse 67 (garuda.2.5.67)
navaśrāddhasya te kālaṁ vakṣyāmi śṛṇu kāśyapa | maraṇāhni mṛtisthāne śrāddhaṁ pakṣinprakalpayet
O Kashyapa, now I shall tell the timing of the nine shraddhas; hear it. On the day of death, at the place of death, O bird, a shraddha should be performed,
Verse 68 (garuda.2.5.68)
dvitīyañca tato mārge viśrāmo yatra kāritaḥ | tataḥ sañcayanasthāne tṛtīyaṁ śrāddhamucyate
the second thereafter on the road, at the place where a halt was made; then, at the place of bone-gathering, the third shraddha is declared.
Verse 69 (garuda.2.5.69)
pañcame saptame tadvadaṣṭame navame tathā | daśamaikādaśe caiva nava śrāddhāni vai khaga
On the fifth, seventh, eighth, and ninth days likewise, and on the tenth and eleventh days too — O bird, there are nine shraddhas in all.
Verse 70 (garuda.2.5.70)
śrāddhāni nava caitāni tṛtīyā ṣoḍaśī smṛtā | ekoddiṣṭavidhānena kāryāṇi manujaistathā
These same nine shraddhas are called the third shodashi; they should be performed by men according to the ekoddishta procedure.
Verse 71 (garuda.2.5.71)
prathame'hni tṛtīye vā pañcame saptame tathā | navamaikādaśe caiva navaśrāddhaṁ prakīrtitam
[In another view] on the first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, and eleventh days the nine shraddhas are declared.
Verse 72 (garuda.2.5.72)
ucyante ṣaḍimānīha nava syurapi yāgetaḥ | uktāni te mayā tāni ṛṣīṇāṁ matabhedataḥ
Here they are spoken of as six, and by another reckoning connected with sacrifice as nine. I have told you these according to the differing opinions of the sages.
Verse 73 (garuda.2.5.73)
rūḍhipakṣo mamābhīṣṭo yogaḥ kaiścidiheṣyate | ādye dvitīye dātavyastathaivaikaṁ pavitrakam
The customary view is what I favor, though some here prefer the 'yoga' reckoning. On the first and the second day, one and the same pavitraka should be offered.
Verse 74 (garuda.2.5.74)
pretāya piṇḍo dātavyo bhuktavatsu dvijātiṣu | praśrastatrābhiraṇyeti yajamānadvijanmanā
Once the brahmins have finished eating, the pinda should be given to the departed. There the twice-born officiant, the sponsor of the rite, should utter the words —
Verse 75 (garuda.2.5.75)
akṣayyamamukasyeti vaktavyaṁ viratau tathā | ekoddiṣṭaṁ me nibodha cetthamāvatsaraṁ smṛtam
'may this be imperishable for so-and-so' — thus should it be said, and the same at the conclusion of the rite. Hear from me the ekoddishta procedure, thus declared for the whole year.
Verse 76 (garuda.2.5.76)
sapiṇḍīkaraṇādūrdhvaṁ yāni śrāddhāni ṣoḍaśa | ekoddiṣṭavidhānena caredvā pārvaṇādṛte
The sixteen shraddhas that follow the sapindikarana should be performed by the ekoddishta procedure, or, alternatively, without the parvana procedure.
Verse 77 (garuda.2.5.77)
pratyabdaṁ yo yathā kuryāttathā kuryātsa tānyapi | ekādaśe dvādaśe'hni preto bhuṁkte dinadvayam
As one performs the yearly rite, so should he perform these too. On the eleventh and twelfth days the departed eats for two days,
Verse 78 (garuda.2.5.78)
yoṣitaḥ puruṣasyāpi piṇḍaṁ preteti nirvapet | sāpiṇḍye tu kṛte tasya pretaśabdo nivartate
and whether the deceased be woman or man, the pinda should be offered saying 'preta'; once the sapindikarana is performed, the word 'preta' ceases to be used.
Verse 79 (garuda.2.5.79)
dīpadānaṁ prakartavyamāvarṣantu gṛhādbahiḥ | annaṁ dīpo jalaṁ vastramanyadvādīyate ca yat
Throughout the entire year, a lamp should be given outside the house. Food, a lamp, water, cloth, and whatever else is given,
Verse 80 (garuda.2.5.80)
tṛptidaṁ pretaśabdena sapiṇḍīkaraṇāvadhi | abdakṛtyaṁ mayoktante samāsādvinatāsuta
all of this, until the sapindikarana, satisfies the departed under the very name 'preta'. O son of Vinata, I have thus told you in brief the observances of the entire year.
Verse 81 (garuda.2.5.81)
vaivasvatagṛhe yānaṁ yathā tattu nibodhameḥ | trayodaśe'hni śravaṇākarmaṇonantarantu saḥ
Now hear from me how the journey to the abode of Yama proceeds. On the thirteenth day, immediately after the shravana-rite,
Verse 82 (garuda.2.5.82)
tvaggṛhītāhivattārkṣya gṛhīto yamakiṁkaraiḥ | tasminmārge vrajatyeko gṛhīta iva markaṭaḥ
O Tarkshya, just as a serpent is gripped by the skin, so is he gripped by the servants of Yama, and, held fast like a captured monkey, he sets out alone upon that path.
Verse 83 (garuda.2.5.83)
vāyvagrasārivadrūpaṁ dehamanyatprapadyate | tatpiṇḍajaṁ pātanārthamanyattu pitṛsambhavam
He takes on another body, of a form composed like the essence of wind and fire — one part arises from the pinda-offering meant for its formation, the other from the ancestral portion.
Verse 84 (garuda.2.5.84)
tatpramāṇavayo'vasthāsaṁsthānāṁ pragbhavo yathā | ṣaḍaśīti sahasrāṇi yojanānāṁ pramāṇataḥ
Its measure, age, and form are shaped accordingly. The road lying between the world of Yama and the world of men,
Verse 85 (garuda.2.5.85)
adhvāntarāliko jñeyo yamamānuṣalokayoḥ | sādhikārdhakrośayutaṁ yojanānāṁ śatadvayam
should be known to measure eighty-six thousand yojanas, together with two hundred yojanas and half a krosha more.
Verse 86 (garuda.2.5.86)
catvāriṁ śattathā sapta pratyahaṁ yāti tatra saḥ | aṣṭācatvāriṁśatā ca traiṁśatā divasairiti
Dragged along by Yama's servants, he traverses forty-seven yojanas each day of that distance, and in forty-eight and forty-eight [and again forty-eight] days,
Verse 87 (garuda.2.5.87)
vaivasvatapuraṁ yāti kṛṣyamāṇo yamānugaiḥ | evaṁ krameṇa yātabye mārge pāparataistu yat
he arrives at the city of Vaivasvata. In this order, for those attached to sin, as they proceed along that road,
Verse 88 (garuda.2.5.88)
jāyate saprapañcaṁ tacchṛṇu tvamaruṇānuja | trayodaśadine dattaḥ pāśairbaddhvātidāruṇaiḥ
O younger brother of Aruna, hear what happens to him in detail. Once the pinda is given on the thirteenth day, bound with the most terrible nooses,
Verse 89 (garuda.2.5.89)
yamasyāṁkuśahasto vai bhṛkuṭīkuṭilānanaḥ | daṇḍaprahārasambhrāntaḥ kṛṣyate dakṣiṇāṁ diśam
an ankusha in hand, brows furrowed, the messenger of Yama drags him toward the south, terrifying him with blows of the rod.
Verse 90 (garuda.2.5.90)
kuśakaṇṭakavalmīkaśaṁkupāṣāṇakarkaśe | tathā pradīptajvalane kvacicchvabhraśatotkaṭe
Rough with kusha grass, thorns, ant-hills, sharp stakes, and stones, and in places blazing with fire, thronged with hundreds of pits,
Verse 91 (garuda.2.5.91)
pradīptādityatapte ca dahyamānaḥ sadaṁśake | kṛṣyate yamadūtaiśca śivāvannādabhīṣaṇaiḥ
along a path scorched by the blazing sun, stung by insects, burning in misery, he is dragged by the messengers of Yama, whose cries are as dreadful as those of jackals.
Verse 92 (garuda.2.5.92)
prayātiḥ dāruṇe mārge pāpakarmā yamālaye | kalevare dahyamāne mahāntaṁ kṣayamṛcchati
The doer of evil proceeds along that terrible road toward the abode of Yama; as his body burns, he suffers great destruction,
Verse 93 (garuda.2.5.93)
bhakṣyamāṇe tathaivāṁge bhidyamāne ca dāruṇam | chidyamāne cirataraṁ janturduḥ khamavāpnute
as his limbs are devoured, terribly broken, and cut for a very long time, that creature endures the greatest suffering.
Verse 94 (garuda.2.5.94)
svena karmavi pākena dehāntaragato'pi san | purāṇi ṣoḍaśāmuṣmanmārge tāni ca me śṛṇu
By the ripening of his own deeds, though he has taken on another body, sixteen cities lie along that path — hear of them from me.
Verse 95 (garuda.2.5.95)
yāmyaṁ sauripuraṁ nagedvabhavanaṁ gandharvaśailāgamau krauñcaṁ krūrapuraṁ vicitrabhavanaṁ bahvāpadaṁ duḥ khadam | nānākrandapuraṁ sutaptabhavanaṁ raudraṁ payovarṣaṇaṁ śītāḍhyaṁ bahubhītiṣoḍaśapurāṇyetānyadṛṣṭani te
Yamapura, Sauripura, Nagendrabhavana, Gandharvashaila-Agama, Krauncha, Kruraura, Vichitrabhavana, the city thronged with calamities, the city of sorrow, Nanakrandapura, the intensely heated mansion, Raudra, Payovarshana, Shitadhya, and Bahubhiti — these sixteen cities you have not yet seen.
Verse 96 (garuda.2.5.96)
tatra yāmya puraṁ gacchanputraputreti ca bruvan | hāheti krandate nityaṁ svakṛtaṁ duṣkṛtaṁ smaran
Going toward that city of Yama, crying 'O my son, my son', remembering his own evil deeds, he laments without pause, 'alas, alas'.
Verse 97 (garuda.2.5.97)
aṣṭādaśodine tārkṣya tatpura prāpnuyādasau | puṣpabhadrā nadī yatra nyagrodhaḥ priyadarśanaḥ
O Tarkshya, on the eighteenth day he reaches that city, where flows the river Pushpabhadra, and stands the lovely nyagrodha (banyan) tree.
Verse 98 (garuda.2.5.98)
There he longs to rest, but those soldiers do not let him rest. Whatever was offered upon the earth by his sons, out of affection or compassion,
Verse 99 (garuda.2.5.99)
māsikaṁ piṇḍamaśnāti tataḥ sauripuraṁ vrajet | vrajannevaṁ pralapate mudgarāhatipīḍitaḥ
that monthly pinda he then eats, and proceeds toward Sauripura. Going along thus, tormented by blows of the mace, he laments —
Verse 100 (garuda.2.5.100)
jalāśayo naiva kṛto mayā tadā manuṣyatṛptyai paśupakṣitṛptaya | gotṛptihetorna ca gocaraḥ kṛtaḥ śarīra he nistara yattvayā kṛtam
'I made no reservoir then, neither for the satisfaction of men, nor of beasts and birds, nor did I make any pasture for the satisfaction of cattle — O body, endure now what you yourself have done!'
Verse 101 (garuda.2.5.101)
tatra nāmnā tu rājāsau jaṁgamaḥ kāmarūpadhṛk | bhayāttaddarśanājjātādbhuṁkte piṇḍaṁ sa śaṁkitaḥ
There a king named Jangama holds sway, one who assumes forms at will; terrified by the fear born of the mere sight of him, he eats his pinda.
Verse 102 (garuda.2.5.102)
tripakṣe jalasaṁyuktaṁ kṣitau dattaṁ tato vrajet | vrajannevaṁ pralapate khaḍgāghātaprapīḍitaḥ
At the mark of three fortnights, once the pinda has been offered on earth together with water, he moves on. Going along, tormented by blows of the sword, he laments —
Verse 103 (garuda.2.5.103)
na nityadānaṁ na gavāhnikaṁ kṛtaṁ pustaṁ ca dattaṁ na hi vedaśāstrayoḥ | purāṇadṛṣṭo na hi sevito'dhvā śarīra he nistara yattvayā kṛtam
'I made no daily gift, no service to cows, gave no book in charity, and gave nothing toward the Veda and the shastras; nor did I ever follow the path shown by the Puranas — O body, endure now what you yourself have done!'
Verse 104 (garuda.2.5.104)
nagendranagaraṁ gatvā bhuktvā cānnaṁ tathāvidham | māsi dvitīye yaddattaṁ bāndhavaistu tato vrajet
Reaching Nagendranagara, and eating such food as is given there, in the second month, whatever his kinsmen have offered, he takes, and moves on again.
Verse 105 (garuda.2.5.105)
vrajannevaṁ pralapate kṛpāṇatsarutāḍitaḥ | parādhānamabhūtsarvaṁmama mūrkhaśiromaṇeḥ
Going along, tormented by blows of the sword-hilt, he laments — 'All this was a terrible acquisition for me; I was the very crown of fools.'
Verse 106 (garuda.2.5.106)
mahatā puṇyayogena mānuṣyaṁ labdhavānaham | tṛtīye māsi samprāpte gandharvanagare śubham
'By a great confluence of merit I had obtained the human birth [yet squandered it].' When the third month comes, in the auspicious Gandharvanagara,
Verse 107 (garuda.2.5.107)
tṛtīyamāsikaṁ piṇḍaṁ tatra bhuktvā brajatyasau | vrajannevaṁ vilapate tadagreṇāhataḥ pathi
having eaten the third monthly pinda there, he moves on. Going along, he laments, struck by that same weapon upon the road —
Verse 108 (garuda.2.5.108)
mayā na dattaṁ na hutaṁ hutāśane tapo na taptaṁ himaśailagahvare | na sevitaṁ gāṁgamaho mahājalaṁ śarīra he nistara yattvayā kṛtam
'I gave no gift, offered no oblation into fire, performed no austerity in a Himalayan cave, nor drank of the great waters of the Ganga — O body, endure now what you yourself have done!'
Verse 109 (garuda.2.5.109)
turye śailāgamaṁ māsi prāpnuyāttatra varṣaṇam | tasyopari bhavetpakṣinpāṣāṇānāṁ nirantaram
In the fourth month he reaches Shailagama, the mountain-city, where, O bird, an unceasing rain of stones falls upon him.
Verse 110 (garuda.2.5.110)
caturthamāsikaṁ śrāddhaṁ bhuktvā tatra prasarpati | sa patanneva vilapanpāṣāṇādyatipīḍitaḥ
Having eaten the fourth monthly shraddha there, he moves on, lamenting even as he falls, tormented by the stones —
Verse 111 (garuda.2.5.111)
na jñānamārgo na ca yogamārgo na karmamārgo na ca bhaktimārgaḥ | na sādhusaṁgātkimapi śrutaṁ mayā śarīra he nistara yattvayā kṛtam
'Neither the path of knowledge, nor of yoga, nor of action, nor of devotion, nor anything at all through the company of the holy did I ever hear — O body, endure now what you yourself have done!'
Verse 112 (garuda.2.5.112)
tataḥ krūrapura māsi pañcame yāti kāśyapa | bhuvi dattaṁ piṇḍajalaṁ bhuktvā krūrapuraṁ vrajet
O Kashyapa, then in the fifth month he goes toward Kruraura; having consumed the pinda and water offered on earth, he proceeds toward Kruraura.

ukhaiḥ kākairbakolūkaistīkṣṇatuṇḍairvitudyate | manujānāṁ hitaṁ dānamante vaitaraṇī khaga

Verse 133 (garuda.2.5.133)

vrajannevaṁ vilapate kuṭhārairmūrdhni tāḍitaḥ | kva bhṛtyakomalakarairgandhatailāvasecanam
Going along, he laments, struck upon the head with axes — 'Where are those servants' gentle hands, that once anointed me with fragrant oil,
Verse 140 (garuda.2.5.140)

Verse 144 (garuda.2.5.144)
prakāśayati pāppānamātmānañca vinindati | yoṣidapyevametasminmārge vai paridevati
he proclaims his own sin and reviles himself. A woman too, upon this same road, laments in this very same way.
Verse 145 (garuda.2.5.145)

Then he sets out toward the city of Yama itself, now not far off — measuring forty yojanas, spread across four sections,
Verse 146 (garuda.2.5.146)

where thirteen gatekeepers, called 'Shravana', are stationed, pleased by the shravana-rite performed [for the departed], and angered otherwise.

Verse 151 (garuda.2.5.151)
ye tu puṇyakṛtastatra te paśyanti yamaṁ tadā | saumyākṛtiṁ kuṇḍalinaṁ maulimantaṁ dhṛtaśriyam
