The Cause of the Lord's Marriage to Kalindi

Chapter 69All chaptersChapter 71

Verse 1 (garuda.2.70.1)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca kālindyā api cotpattiṁ pravakṣyāmi khageśvara vivasvānnāma sūryobhattasya putrī vyajāyata

Shri Krishna said: I shall now also tell of Kalindi's origin, O lord of birds. There was a Surya named Vivasvan; a daughter was born to him—

Verse 2 (garuda.2.70.2)

kālindīsaṁjñakā vīndra yamunā yānujā smṛtā kṛṣṇapatnītvakāmena cacāra tapa uttamam

—known as Kalindi, O best of kings, remembered as the river Yamuna, his younger daughter; desiring to become Krishna's wife, she performed the most excellent austerity.

Verse 3 (garuda.2.70.3)

tapa ālocanaṁ proktaṁ tattvānāṁ ca vinirṇayaḥ pūrvārjitānāṁ pāpānāmanutāpastapaḥ smṛtam

Tapas, austerity, is declared to be reflection and the determination of truths; remorse for previously accumulated sins is likewise remembered as tapas.

Verse 4 (garuda.2.70.4)

prāyo nāma tapaḥ proktaṁ cittanigraha ucyate prāyaścittamiti proktaṁ na tu kṣauraṁ khageśvara

That called 'prayah,' penance, is said to be the restraint of the mind — this is what is meant by 'prayashchitta,' atonement, O lord of birds, not merely the shaving of the head.

Verse 5 (garuda.2.70.5)

anutāpayutaṁ bhūtaṁ tacchaṇu tvaṁ khageśvara pūrvaṁ na japtaṁ divyamantraṁ mukunda taptaṁ sadā kleśadāvānalena

Hear now, O lord of birds, what her remorse consisted of: 'O Mukunda, formerly I never recited the divine mantra; I was ever instead scorched by the forest-fire of affliction—'

Verse 6 (garuda.2.70.6)

na vai smṛtaṁ harināmāmṛtaṁ ca sadā smṛtaṁ haridoṣādikaṁ ca na tu smṛtaṁ haritattvāmṛtaṁ ca samyakśrutaṁ lolavārtādikaṁ ca

'—never did I remember the nectar of Hari's name, though I ever dwelt on Hari's supposed faults; never did I contemplate the nectar of Hari's truth, though I attentively listened to frivolous gossip and the like—'

Verse 7 (garuda.2.70.7)

na pūjitaṁ haripādāravindaṁ supūjitāḥ putramitrādikāśca na vanditaṁ haripādāravindaṁ suvandito mitrapādaḥ sughoraḥ

'—Hari's lotus feet I never worshipped, while I worshipped well my sons and friends; Hari's lotus feet I never venerated, while I well venerated the terrible feet of mere friends—'

Verse 8 (garuda.2.70.8)

na dṛṣṭaṁ vai dhūpadhūmrairupetaṁ harervakraṁ kuntalaiḥ saṁvṛtaṁ ca putrādikaṁ lālitaṁ vai mukunda na lālitaṁ tava vakraṁ murāre

'—never did I behold Hari's face, veiled with curling locks and wreathed in incense-smoke; O Mukunda, I cherished my sons, but never cherished your face, O Murari—'

Verse 9 (garuda.2.70.9)

sulālitaṁ bhūṣaṇaiḥ putramitraṁ na lālitaṁ sarvapāpāpahāri na bhuktaṁ vai harinairavedyaśeṣaṁ mitrālaye ṣaḍrasānnaṁ ca bhuktam

'—I cherished my sons and friends, adorning them with ornaments, but never adorned you, remover of all sin; I never partook of Hari's leftover food-offering, though I partook of six-flavored meals at friends' homes—'

Verse 10 (garuda.2.70.10)

supuṣpagandhā nārpitā te murāre samarpitāḥ putramitrādikebhyaḥ santaptohaṁ putramitrādikeṣu kadā drakṣye tava vaktraṁ mukunda

'—fine flowers and fragrances I never offered to you, O Murari, though I offered them to sons and friends; I am consumed with anguish over my sons and friends — when shall I behold your face, O Mukunda?'

Verse 11 (garuda.2.70.11)

avaiṣṇavānnaiḥ śigruśākādikaiśca hyanarpitānnaiśca tathāpyasaṁskṛtaiḥ tathāpyabhakṣyai rasanā ca dagdhā kadā drakṣye tava vaktraṁ mukunda

'My tongue is scorched with unoffered, un-consecrated, un-Vaishnava food — drumstick-vegetables and the like, even improperly-prepared and forbidden foods; when shall I behold your face, O Mukunda?'

Verse 12 (garuda.2.70.12)

aṣṭākṣarīpūjayā divyatīrthairviṣṇoḥ purā bhrāmitaiḥ śaṅkhatīrthaiḥ na pāvitaṁ maccharīraṁ murāre kadā drakṣye tava va ktraṁ mukunda

'My body was never purified with worship of the eight-syllable mantra, nor with the divine waters once circulated through Vishnu's conch; O Murari, when shall I behold your face, O Mukunda?'

Verse 13 (garuda.2.70.13)

anarpitairgandhapuṣpādikaiśca anarpitairbhūṣaṇairvastrajātaiḥ avaiṣṇavānāṁ digdhagandhādidoṣairgātraṁ dagdhaṁ kadā hyuddhariṣye mukunda

'With unoffered fragrances and flowers, with unoffered ornaments and garments, my body is scorched by the taint of anointing fragrances of non-Vaishnavas; when, O Mukunda, shall I be delivered?'

Verse 14 (garuda.2.70.14)

dagdhau ca pādau mama vāsudeva na gacchantau kṣetrapathaṁ hareśca netre ca dagdhe mama sarvadāpi nālokitaṁ tava deva pratīkam

'O Vasudeva, my feet are scorched, for they never walked the path to Hari's sacred fields; my eyes too are ever scorched, for they never beheld your sacred image, O God.'

Verse 15 (garuda.2.70.15)

dagdhau ca hastau mama vāsudeva na pūjitaṁ tava viṣṇoḥ pratīkam mayā kṛtaṁ pāpajātaṁ murāre kadā drakṣye tava vakraṁ mukunda

'O Vasudeva, my hands too are scorched, for they never worshipped your sacred image. O Murari, seeing the mass of sin I have committed — when shall I behold your face, O Mukunda?'

Verse 16 (garuda.2.70.16)

madīyadoṣāngaṇayanna pūrṇa dayāṁ kuru tvaṁ suddhadāsyānmukunda yāvanti lomāni madīyagātre saṁti prabho sarvadorṣarvidūra

'Do not, O Mukunda, count my faults; rather show your full grace, accepting me among your pure servants. O Lord, far removed from every fault — as many hairs as there are upon my body—'

Verse 17 (garuda.2.70.17)

tāvanti pāpāni madīyagātre kadā drakṣye tava vaktraṁ mukunda anantadehe patiputrairgṛhaiśca mitrairdhanaiḥ paśubhṛtyādikaiśca

'—so many are the sins upon my body; when shall I behold your face, O Mukunda? Across endless births, with husbands, sons, houses, friends, wealth, cattle, and servants—'

Verse 18 (garuda.2.70.18)

sukhaṁ nāptaṁ hyapumātraṁ mukunda sevā muktā tava devasya viṣṇoḥ itaḥ paraṁ putramitrādikaṁ ca yāsye nāhaṁ tava dāsī bhavāmi

'—I have never obtained even the slightest happiness, O Mukunda, apart from service to you. Henceforth I shall have nothing more to do with sons and friends — I shall become your handmaiden alone.'

Verse 19 (garuda.2.70.19)

yeye brūyuḥ putramitrādikaiśca samyaksukhaṁ jāyate martyaloke teṣāmāsye mūtraviṣṭhādikaṁ ca samyaksadā patitaṁ ceti jāne

'Whoever says that true happiness is born, in this mortal world, through sons and friends — into their very mouths, I know, urine and excrement have truly and ever fallen.'

Verse 20 (garuda.2.70.20)

mitrādīnāṁ yatkṛtaṁ dravyajātaṁ vṛthā gataṁ malarūpaṁ ca jātam sadvaiṣṇavānāṁ yatkṛtaṁ dravyajātaṁ hariprāpteḥ kāraṇaṁ syātsadaiva

'Whatever wealth is spent upon friends and the like goes to waste, becoming mere filth; whatever wealth is spent upon true Vaishnavas ever becomes the cause of attaining Hari.'

Verse 21 (garuda.2.70.21)

etādṛśaṁ tattu jātaṁ mukunda alaṁ hyalaṁ tena duḥkhaṁ ca bhuktam saṁgaṁ dattātsajjanānāṁ sadā tvaṁ vinā ca tvaṁ durjanānāṁ ca saṁgāt

'Thus has it become, O Mukunda — enough, enough! I have suffered enough through that. Grant me ever the company of the virtuous, and deliver me from the company of the wicked, apart from you.'

Verse 22 (garuda.2.70.22)

saṁgaiḥ sadā durjanānāṁ murāre gātraṁ dagdhaṁ na virāgeṇa yuktam etādṛśāhaṁ kāṁ gātiṁ vā mukunda yāsye na jāne dayayā māṁ ca pāhi

'O Murari, through the constant company of the wicked my body is scorched, unaccompanied by dispassion. Being such as I am, what destiny, O Mukunda, shall I reach? I know not — protect me, out of your grace.'

Verse 23 (garuda.2.70.23)

etādṛśo hyanutāpaḥ khagendra prāyaścittaṁ na ca kṣaurādikaṁ ca bhānoḥ kanyā hyanutāpaṁ ca kṛtvā vicārayāmāsa hareḥ sutattvam

Such indeed, O lord of birds, is true remorse — and true atonement — not merely shaving and the like. The daughter of the Sun, having thus expressed her remorse, then reflected upon the true nature of Hari.

Verse 24 (garuda.2.70.24)

sarvottamo harirekaḥ sadaiva yataḥ pūrṇaḥ sarvaguṇaistataśca sṛṣṭau yasmājjayate viśvajātamato hariḥ sarvaguṇaiśca pūrṇaḥ

Hari alone is ever supreme above all, since he is complete with every quality; since from him the entire universe arises at creation, therefore Hari is complete with every quality.

Verse 25 (garuda.2.70.25)

yo devānāmādya akāra eva yato brahmādyā naiva pūrṇāḥ samastāḥ lakṣmīprasādāccirapuṇyena jāto yathāyogyaṁ pūrṇaguṇo viriñcaḥ

He is the very origin of the gods, since Brahma and all the others are not themselves complete; through Lakshmi's grace and long-accumulated merit, Brahma was born complete in qualities only insofar as fitting to his station.

Verse 26 (garuda.2.70.26)

na lakṣmīvadguṇapūrṇo viriñco na viṣṇuvadguṇapūrṇā ramāpi na vāyuvadbhāratī cāpi pūrṇā na śeṣavadvāruṇī cāpi pūrṇā

Brahma is not complete in qualities as Lakshmi is; Rama too is not complete in qualities as Vishnu is; Bharati is not complete as Vayu is; Varuni too is not complete as Shesha is—

Verse 27 (garuda.2.70.27)

na vai rudravatpārvatī pūrṇarūpā hyanyepyevaṁ naiva pūrṇāḥ sadaiva ālocanāmevameṣā hi kṛtvā tapaścakre yamunāyāśca tīre

—Parvati is indeed not complete in form as Rudra is; and all others likewise are never complete in this way. Having thus reflected, she performed austerity on the bank of the Yamuna.

Verse 28 (garuda.2.70.28)

tadācāhaṁ yamunāyāśca tīraṁ pārthena sākaṁ mṛgayāṁ gataḥ khaga dṛṣṭvā ca tāṁ tatra tapaścarantīṁ tadābruvaṁ matsakhāyaṁ ca pārtham

Then I, O bird, went with Partha to hunt on the bank of the Yamuna; and seeing her there performing austerity, I then said to my friend Partha—

Verse 29 (garuda.2.70.29)

he pārtha śīghraṁ vraja kanyāsamīpaṁ tvaṁ pṛccha kasmādatra tapaḥ karoṣi evaṁ proktastatsamīpaṁ sa gatvā pṛṣṭvā caitatkāraṇaṁ śīghrameva

'O Partha, go quickly to the maiden and ask her why she performs austerity here.' Thus told, he went quickly to her, asked the reason—

Verse 30 (garuda.2.70.30)

āgatya māmavadatphālgunoyaṁ sarvaṁ vṛttāṁntaṁ tvasau matsamīpe tatastvahaṁ sumuhūrte ca tasyāḥ pāṇigrahaṁ kṛtavāṁstatra samyak

—and returning, Phalguna told me the entire account before me. Then, at an auspicious hour, I duly took her hand in marriage there.

Verse 31 (garuda.2.70.31)

tasyāśca tāpātsaṁtataṁ madvicārātprasannohaṁ satataṁ suprasannaḥ pūrṇānande ramamāṇāsya nityaṁ tayā ca me kiṁ sukhaṁsyātkhagendra

By her constant austerity, and her constant contemplation of me, I became continually pleased; O lord of birds, for me, ever delighting in complete bliss, what additional happiness could there be through her?

Verse 32 (garuda.2.70.32)

mayā vivāhonugrahārthaṁ hi tasyā aṅgīkṛto na tu saukhyāya vīndra tathā vakṣye lakṣmaṇāyāśca rūpaṁ pāṇigrāhe kāraṇaṁ cāpi vīndrā

The marriage was undertaken by me solely for the sake of blessing her, O best of kings, not for my own pleasure. Now I shall likewise tell of Lakshmana's form, and the reason for taking her hand as well, O best of kings.

Verse 33 (garuda.2.70.33)

śṛṇuṣva tattava vakṣyāmi gopyaṁ sacchiṣyake nāsti gopyaṁ gurośca

Listen — I shall tell you this secret; for a true disciple, there is nothing the Guru need keep hidden.
