The Cause of Lakshmana's Marriage and the Marks of the Lord

Chapter 70All chaptersChapter 72

Verse 1 (garuda.2.71.1)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca yā lakṣmaṇā pūrvasarge khagendra putrī hyabhūdvahnivedasya vettuḥ sulakṣaṇaiḥ saṁyutatvādyataḥ sā sulakṣmaṇeti prathitā khagendra

Shri Krishna said: O lord of birds, she who, in an earlier creation, was the daughter of one learned in the fire-Veda — since she was endowed with excellent bodily marks, she became renowned by the name Sulakshmana.

Verse 2 (garuda.2.71.2)

yathā lakṣmīrlakṣaṇaiḥ sā supūrṇā yathā harirlakṣaṇairvai supūrṇaḥ yathā vāyurlakṣaṇaiḥ pūrṇa eva yathā gāyatrī lakṣaṇaiḥ sā supūrṇā

Just as Lakshmi is fully complete in her marks, just as Hari is fully complete in his marks; just as Vayu is complete in his marks, just as Gayatri is fully complete in her marks—

Verse 3 (garuda.2.71.3)

yathā rudrādyā lakṣaṇairvai prapūrṇā rudrādillakṣmaṇā caiva pūrṇā guṇenaivaṁ dharmataḥ kiñcideva tathānusaṁdhānādvriyate nāma cāpi

—just as Rudra and the others are complete in their marks, so Lakshmana too is complete in marks like them; her name too was chosen accordingly, by virtue of this quality.

Verse 4 (garuda.2.71.4)

tasmādāhurlakṣmaṇetyeva sarve tallakṣaṇaṁ śṛṇu cādau khagendra nārāyaṇe pūrṇaguṇe rameśe dvātriṁśatsaṁkhyāni sulakṣaṇāni

Hence all call her Lakshmana; hear now those very marks, O lord of birds. In Narayana, complete in every quality, Lord of Rama, there are thirty-two auspicious marks—

Verse 5 (garuda.2.71.5)

saṁtyeva pakṣīndra vadāmyanukramānmattaḥ śrutvā mokṣamāpnoti nityam yaḥ saptapādaḥ ṣaṇṇavatyaṅguloṅgaścaturhastaḥ puruṣastīkṣṇadantaḥ

—these exist, O lord of birds; I shall recount them in order — hearing them from me, one ever attains liberation. He whose body is seven feet in height, ninety-six finger-widths tall, four-armed, of sharp teeth—

Verse 6 (garuda.2.71.6)

ya etatsarvaṁ militaṁ caikameva harerviṣṇorlakṣaṇaṁ cāhurāryāḥ mukhaṁ strigdhaṁ vartulaṁ puṣṭirūpaṁ dvitīyaṁ tallakṣaṇaṁ cāhurāryāḥ

—all this combined together the wise call the first mark of Hari-Vishnu. A face that is lustrous, round, and full — the wise call this the second mark.

Verse 7 (garuda.2.71.7)

hanuryasyānunnataṁ cāsti vīndra tallakṣaṇaṁ prāhurāryāstṛtīyam yaddantā vai tīkṣṇasūkṣmāśca saṁti tallakṣaṇaṁ cāhurāryāścaturtham

O best of kings, a chin that is not protruding — the wise call this the third mark. Teeth that are sharp and fine — the wise call this the fourth mark.

Verse 8 (garuda.2.71.8)

yasyādhare raktimā tvasti vīndra tallakṣaṇaṁ pañcamaṁ cāhurāryāḥ yasya hastā atiraktāḥ khagendra tallakṣaṇaṁ prāhurāryāśca ṣaṣṭham

O best of kings, redness of the lower lip — the wise call this the fifth mark. Hands that are deeply reddish, O lord of birds — the wise call this the sixth mark.

Verse 9 (garuda.2.71.9)

yasminnakhāḥ saṁti raktāḥ suśobhāstallakṣaṇaṁ saptamaṁ cāhurāryāḥ yasminkapole raktimā tvasti vīndra tallakṣaṇaṁ hyaṣṭamaṁ prāhurāryā

Nails that are red and beautifully lustrous — the wise call this the seventh mark. O best of kings, redness in the cheeks — the wise call this the eighth mark.

Verse 10 (garuda.2.71.10)

yasminkare śaṅkhacakrādirekhā vartante tannavamaṁ prāhurāryāḥ yasyodaraṁ tanturūpaṁ supuṣṭaṁ valitrayairaṅkitaṁ suṁdaraṁ ca

A hand marked with lines of conch, discus, and the like — the wise call this the ninth mark. A belly that is slender yet full, marked with three folds, beautiful—

Verse 11 (garuda.2.71.11)

tallakṣaṇaṁ daśamaṁ prāhurāryā ekādaśaṁ nimnanābhiṁ tadāhuḥ ūrudvayaṁ yasya ca māṁsalaṁ vai tallakṣaṇaṁ dvādaśaṁ prāhurāryāḥ

—the wise call this the tenth mark; a deep navel they call the eleventh. Two thighs that are full and fleshy — the wise call this the twelfth mark.

Verse 12 (garuda.2.71.12)

kaṭirhi dīrghā pṛthulāsti yasya trayodaśaṁ lakṣma tadāhurāryāḥ yasyāsti muṣko supariṣṭhito vai caturdaśaṁ lakṣma tadāhurāryāḥ

A waist that is long and broad — the wise call this the thirteenth mark. Well-formed testicles — the wise call this the fourteenth mark.

Verse 13 (garuda.2.71.13)

samunnataṁ śiśnamatho hi lakṣma yasyāsti tatpañcadaśaṁ vadanti sutāmrakaṁ pādatalaṁ khagendra tallakṣaṇaṁ ṣoḍaśaṁ prāhurāryāḥ

An evenly-raised organ — this they call the fifteenth mark. Soles of the feet of fine copper hue, O lord of birds — the wise call this the sixteenth mark.

Verse 14 (garuda.2.71.14)

nimnau ca gulphau saptadaśaṁ tadāhurgrīvārūpaṁ prāhuraṣṭādaśaṁ ca ekonaviṁśaṁ tvakṣipadmaṁ suraktaṁ prāhurbāhuṁ jānu viṁśaṁ tathaiva

Ankles that are recessed — the seventeenth; the form of the neck — the eighteenth; lotus-eyes finely reddish — the nineteenth; the arms and knees — likewise the twentieth.

Verse 15 (garuda.2.71.15)

vistīrṇoraścaikaviṁśaṁ tadāhuḥ siṁhāskandhaṁ dvyuttaraṁ viṁśamāhuḥ trayoviṁśaṁ sūkṣmamāsyaṁ tadāhuścaturviṁśaṁ suprasanne ca dṛṣṭī

A broad chest — the twenty-first; lion-like shoulders — the twenty-second; a fine mouth — the twenty-third; and eyes ever gracious and pleased — the twenty-fourth.

Verse 16 (garuda.2.71.16)

hrasvaṁ liṅgaṁ mārdavaṁ cāpi vīndra tallakṣaṇaṁ pañcaviṁśaṁ vadanti samau ca pādau kaṭijānu corū ṣaḍviṁśamāhuśca same ca jaṅghe

O best of kings, a small and soft organ — this they call the twenty-fifth mark. Even feet, waist, knees, and thighs — the twenty-sixth; and even calves too.

Verse 17 (garuda.2.71.17)

samānahastau samakarṇau militvā dvātriṁśatkaṁ lakṣaṇaṁ prāhurāryāḥ dvātriṁśatkaṁ lakṣaṇaṁ vai mukunde dvātriṁśatkaṁ lakṣaṇaṁ vai ramāyām

—matching hands and matching ears, together, the wise call the thirty-second mark. Thus thirty-two marks are in Mukunda; thirty-two marks likewise are in Rama—

Verse 18 (garuda.2.71.18)

dvātriṁśatkaṁ lakṣaṇaṁ brahmaṇopi tadbhāratyāḥ pravadantyeva satyam tathā ca śaṅkā samameva cakriṇetyevaṁ sadāmā kuru nirṇayaṁ bruve

—thirty-two marks are in Brahma too, and this is truly declared also of Bharati. There might be some doubt as to whether these are simply equal to the Discus-Bearer's own — regarding this I state the true determination.

Verse 19 (garuda.2.71.19)

ekasya vai lakṣaṇasyāpi viṣṇorlakṣmīrantaṁ naiva samyakprapede atonantairlakṣaṇaiḥ saṁyutaṁ ca hariṁ cāhurlakṣaṇajñāḥ sadaiva

Even of a single mark of Vishnu, Lakshmi herself has never truly fathomed the end; hence those who know the marks ever declare Hari to be endowed with endless degrees of marks.

Verse 20 (garuda.2.71.20)

jānāti lakṣmīrlakṣaṇaṁ vāyurūpe svāpekṣayā hyatiriktaṁ khagendra svalakṣaṇāpekṣayā bhāratī tu śatairguṇairadhikā vedhasopi

Lakshmi knows the marks present in Vayu's form as exceeding her own, O lord of birds; and Bharati, relative to her own marks, is a hundredfold greater than even Brahma's.

Verse 21 (garuda.2.71.21)

khagendra tasmāllakṣaṇe sāmyacittaṁ viśvādīnāṁ sarvadā mā kuruṣva aṣṭāviṁśatiṁ prāhū rudrādikānāṁ bhrūnetrayorlakṣaṇenaiva hīnāḥ

Hence, O lord of birds, never hold in mind the notion of equality in these marks among Vishva and the others. They declare twenty-eight marks for Rudra and the others — deficient by the marks of brow and eyes.

Verse 22 (garuda.2.71.22)

alakṣaṇaṁ manyate yaddhi tasya durlakṣaṇaṁ naiva taccintanīyam aṣṭāviṁśatiṁ lakṣaṇaṁ vai harasya na bhāratīvaccintanīyaṁ khagendra

What is merely considered a lack of a mark should not be thought a bad mark as such; Hara's twenty-eight marks should not be thought comparable to Bharati's deficiency, O lord of birds.

Verse 23 (garuda.2.71.23)

ato haraḥ krodharūpī sadaiva tayorabhāvātsatyamuktaṁ tathaitat ato dvayaṁ nāsti rudre khagendra śiśnodare kiñcidādhikyamasti

Hence Hara is ever of a wrathful nature, on account of the absence of those two marks — this is indeed truly said. Thus these two are absent in Rudra, O lord of birds; yet there is some slight excess in his organ and belly.

Verse 24 (garuda.2.71.24)

saptādhikairviṁśatilakṣaṇaistu samāyutāḥ svastriyo lakṣmaṇādyāḥ ṣaḍviṁśatyā lakṣaṇaiścāpi yuktā vāruṇyādyā pañcaviṁśaiśca candraḥ

His own wives, Lakshmana and the others, are endowed with twenty-seven marks; Varuni and the others with twenty-six marks; and the Moon with twenty-five.

Verse 25 (garuda.2.71.25)

arthaścaturviṁśatibhiścaiva yukto nāsāvāyordvyadhikā viṁśatiśca lakṣaṇaiścaikaviṁśatyā śacī yuktā na saṁśayaḥ

Artha is endowed with twenty-four marks; Nasavayu with twenty-two; and Shachi is endowed with twenty-one marks, without doubt.

Verse 26 (garuda.2.71.26)

pravāhā viṁśakairyuktā yama ekonaviṁśakaiḥ pāśyaṣṭādaśabhiryukto daśasaptayuto'nalaḥ

Pravaha is endowed with twenty marks; Yama with nineteen; Pashi (Varuna) with eighteen; and Anala with seventeen.

Verse 27 (garuda.2.71.27)

vaivasvataḥ ṣoḍaśabhimitraḥ pañcadaśairyutaḥ caturdaśaistu(caturviṁśaistu?) dhanapaḥ pāvakastu trayodaśaiḥ

Vaivasvata with sixteen; Mitra with fifteen; Dhanapa with fourteen; and Pavaka with thirteen.

Verse 28 (garuda.2.71.28)

gaṅgā dvādaśabhiryuktā budha ekādaśairyutaḥ śanistu daśasaṁkhyākaiḥ puṣkaro navabhiryutaḥ

Ganga is endowed with twelve; Budha with eleven; Shani with ten; and Pushkara with nine.

Verse 29 (garuda.2.71.29)

atha ṣoḍaśasāhasraṁ bhāryāstu mama vallabhāḥ aṣṭabhiścaiva saṁyuktāḥ saptabhiḥ pitarastathā

Now, my sixteen thousand beloved wives are endowed with eight marks; and the Pitris likewise with seven.

Verse 30 (garuda.2.71.30)

ṣaḍbhiśca devagandharvāḥ pañcabhistadanantarāḥ caturbhiḥ kṣitipāḥ proktāstribhiranye ca saṁyutāḥ

The gods and gandharvas with six; those next after them with five; kings are declared with four; and others with three.

Verse 31 (garuda.2.71.31)

udare kiñcidādhikye hrasve pāde ca karṇayoḥ śikhādhikyaṁ vinā vipra bhāryāyāṁ ca śivasya ca

Some slight excess in the belly, shortness in the feet and ears, and — apart from an excess of hair-tuft, O brahmin — in the wife of Shiva too—

Verse 32 (garuda.2.71.32)

lakṣmaṇāyāṁ pañca doṣāḥ śirogulphādikaṁ vinā nābhyādhikye sahaivāṣṭau doṣāḥ saṁtyativāhike

—there are five faults in Lakshmana, apart from head, ankles, and the rest. With an excess in the navel, Ativahika has eight faults together.

Verse 33 (garuda.2.71.33)

jaṅghādhikye sahaivāṣṭau doṣāḥ śacyāḥ sadā smṛtāḥ evameva hi doṣāścāpyūhanīyāḥ khageśvara

With an excess in the calves, eight faults together are ever remembered as belonging to Shachi. In just this way, O lord of birds, the remaining faults are to be inferred.

Verse 34 (garuda.2.71.34)

durlakṣaṇaiḥ sadā vīndra saṁśrutaistattvavidbhavet mahodaro laṁbanābhirīṣāmātrogradaṁṣṭrakaḥ

O best of kings, by hearing constantly of these bad marks, one becomes a knower of truth. Kali is described as: great-bellied, with a hanging navel, with fierce, plough-shaft-sized tusks—

Verse 35 (garuda.2.71.35)

andhakūpagabhīrākṣo laṁbakarṇauṣṭhanāsikaḥ laṁbagulpho vakrapādaḥ kunakhī śyāvadantakaḥ

—eyes deep as a blind well, hanging ears, lips, and nose; drooping ankles, crooked feet, deformed nails, discolored teeth—

Verse 36 (garuda.2.71.36)

dīrghajaṅgho dīrghaśiśnastvekāṇḍaścaikanāsikaḥ raktaśmaśrū raktaromā vakrāsyaḥ saṁprakīrtitaḥ

—long-shanked, long-membered, single-testicled, of pinched nostril, red-bearded, red-haired, and crooked-faced — thus is he described.

Verse 37 (garuda.2.71.37)

dagdhaparvatasaṁkāśo raktapṛṣṭhaḥ kaliḥ smṛtaḥ alomāṁso'lomaśirā raktagaṇḍakapolakaḥ

Resembling a scorched mountain, red-backed — thus is Kali remembered; his flesh and head hairless, his cheeks and jowls reddened—

Verse 38 (garuda.2.71.38)

lalāṭe pāṇḍutā nityaṁ vāmaskandhe kare khaga krūradṛṣṭirdṛṣṭipādastathā vai ghargharasvaraḥ

—his forehead ever pale, likewise the left shoulder and hand, O bird; his gaze cruel, as if walking on his very gaze, and his voice hoarse and rasping.

Verse 39 (garuda.2.71.39)

atyāśī cātipānaśca stanau śuṣkaphalopamau ūrau navāñjikāromaḥ tathā pṛṣṭhe ca mastake

—he eats and drinks excessively, his chest like withered fruit; on his thighs, fresh sprout-like hair, and likewise on his back and head—

Verse 40 (garuda.2.71.40)

lalāṭe trīṇi dīrghe tu same dvau saṁprakīrtitau sarpākārastu yo matsyastasya śiśne prakīrtitaḥ

—on his forehead three long wrinkles, and two more, level, are described. A fish shaped like a serpent is said to reside on his organ—

Verse 41 (garuda.2.71.41)

pādatrāṇopamo matsyo rasanāgre prakīrtitaḥ śiśnākāraśca yo matsyo gude tasya praśasyate

—a fish shaped like a shoe is declared to be at the tip of his tongue; and a fish shaped like the organ is described at his anus—

Verse 42 (garuda.2.71.42)

vṛścikākāramatsyastu padostasya praśasyate śvākāraścāpi matsyo vai mukhe tasya prakīrtitaḥ

—a fish shaped like a scorpion is described at his feet; and a fish shaped like a dog is described at his mouth.

Verse 43 (garuda.2.71.43)

haste tu bahurekhāḥ syurloma nāsāpuṭe smṛtam atidīrghaṁ tu cāṅguṣṭhaṁ kaniṣṭhaṁ cātidīrghakam

On his hand there are many lines; hair is remembered as growing in his nostrils; his thumb is excessively long, and his little finger excessively long as well.

Verse 44 (garuda.2.71.44)

durlakṣaṇaṁ tvevamādi kalāvasti hyanekaśaḥ sulakṣaṇānyanekāni mayi saṁti khageśvara

Such bad marks, and many more besides, exist in the Kali age; but many excellent marks, O lord of birds, exist in me.

Verse 45 (garuda.2.71.45)

dvātriṁśallakṣaṇaṁ viṣṇorbrahmādyāpekṣayaiva tat sahābhiprāya garbheṇa brahmaṇoktaṁ tava prabho

The thirty-two marks of Vishnu are stated relative to Brahma and the others; this was declared by Brahma with a deeper inner intent, O Lord.

Verse 46 (garuda.2.71.46)

brahmoktasya mayoktasya virodho nāsti sattama mayoktasyaiva sa vyāsaḥ kaṁbugrīvaḥ pradarśyate

There is no contradiction, O best one, between what Brahma declared and what I have declared; that same Vyasa, as described by me, is shown with a conch-shaped neck.

Verse 47 (garuda.2.71.47)

raktādharaṁ rakta tālu caikīkṛtya mayoditam ato virodho nāstyeva tathā jñānātpratīyate

Having combined the red lower lip and red palate as one, I have described it thus; hence there is indeed no contradiction — this is understood through proper knowledge.

Verse 48 (garuda.2.71.48)

saptādhikairviṁśatilakṣaṇaistu samāyutā yāḥ striyo lakṣmaṇādyāḥ

As stated, the women beginning with Lakshmana are endowed with twenty-seven marks.

Verse 49 (garuda.2.71.49)

bhage netre ca haste ca stane kukṣau tathaiva ca bhāratyapekṣayā pañcabhirnyūnā tvasti lakṣaṇaiḥ

In the private parts, eyes, hands, breast, and belly — relative to Bharati, she is deficient by five marks.

Verse 50 (garuda.2.71.50)

na rudravanna cānyāni lakṣaṇāni khageśvara ṣaḍviṁśatyā lakṣaṇaiścāpi yuktā vāruṇyāḥ ṣaḍlakṣaṇaiścaiva hīnā
