The Order of Pilgrimage to Venkatesha Hill

Chapter 71All chaptersChapter 73

Verse 1 (garuda.2.72.1)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca somasya putrī pūrvasarge babhūva bhāryā madīyā jāmbavatī mama priyā tāsāṁ madhye hyadhikā vīndra kiñcidrudrādibhyaḥ pañcaguṇairvihīnā

Shri Krishna said: In an earlier creation she was the daughter of Soma; she is my wife, Jambavati, dear to me. Among them she is somewhat superior, O best of kings, though deficient by five degrees relative to Rudra and the others.

Verse 2 (garuda.2.72.2)

yadāveśo balavānsyādramāyāṁ tadānāsa priyate keśavolam yadāveśāddhrāsamupaiti kāle tadā tāsāṁ sāmyamāhurmahāntaḥ

When the divine indwelling presence is strong, as in Rama, then Keshava is abundantly pleased; when that presence undergoes diminishment over time, the great ones speak of equality among them.

Verse 3 (garuda.2.72.3)

lakṣmyāveśaḥ kiñcidastyeva nityamatastābhyaḥ kiñcidādhikyamasti

There is ever some degree of Lakshmi's indwelling presence in Jambavati; hence she has some slight superiority over the other queens.

Verse 4 (garuda.2.72.4)

garuḍa uvāca tāsāṁ madhye jāmbavantī tu kṛṣṇa ārādhanaṁ kīdṛśaṁ sā cakāra tanme brūhi kṛpayā viśvamūrte ādhikye vai kāraṇaṁ tābhya eva

Garuda said: Among them, O Krishna, what manner of worship did Jambavati perform? Tell me this, O universal form, out of grace — the very reason for her superiority over the others.

Verse 5 (garuda.2.72.5)

garuḍenaivamuktastu bhagavān devakīsutaḥ meghagaṁbhīrayā vācā uvāca vinatāsutam

Thus addressed by Garuda, the Lord, son of Devaki, spoke to the son of Vinata in a voice deep as thunder-clouds.

Verse 6 (garuda.2.72.6)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca yā pūrvasarge somaputrī babhūva piturgṛhe vartamānāpi sādhvī janma svakīyaṁ sārthakaṁ vai cakāra pitrā sākaṁ viṣṇuśuśrūṣaṇe na ca

Shri Krishna said: She who, in an earlier creation, was the daughter of Soma, though residing in her father's house, was virtuous; she made her own birth truly meaningful — not merely by dwelling with her father, but through service to Vishnu.

Verse 7 (garuda.2.72.7)

śuśrāva nityaṁ satpurāṇāni caivaṁ cakre sadā viṣṇupādapraṇāmam cakre sadā tārakasyāpi viṣṇoḥ pradakṣiṇaṁ smaraṇaṁ kurvatī sā

She constantly listened to the sacred Puranas, and ever bowed to Vishnu's feet; she ever performed circumambulation of the deliverer Vishnu, all the while keeping him in remembrance.

Verse 8 (garuda.2.72.8)

pitrā sākaṁ sā tu kanyā khagendra vairāgyayuktā śravaṇātsaṁbabhūva keśaṁ ca mitraṁ dviradādikaṁ ca anarghyaratnāni gṛhādikaṁ ca

That maiden, O lord of birds, together with her father, became endowed with dispassion through such hearing — regarding her hair, friends, elephants, priceless jewels, house and the rest—

Verse 9 (garuda.2.72.9)

sarvaṁ hyetannaśvaraṁ caiva mene mamādhīnaṁ hariṇā vai kṛtaṁ ca yenaiva dattaṁ putramitrādikaṁ ca tenā hṛtaṁ vedanāṁ naiva cakre

—she considered all of this perishable, and understood that whatever seemed 'mine' was in fact ordained by Hari; whatever sons and friends were given by him, he alone could also take away — and over this she felt no distress.

Verse 10 (garuda.2.72.10)

adyaiva viṣṇuḥ paramo dayāluḥ dayāṁ mayi kṛtavāṁstena suṣṭhu pitrā sākaṁ kanyakā sā tu vīndra sadātmani hyamale vāsudeve

'Even this very day, the supremely compassionate Vishnu has shown his grace to me, and rightly so.' That maiden, O best of kings, together with her father, fixed her mind ever upon the pure, eternal Vasudeva.

Verse 11 (garuda.2.72.11)

ekāntatvaṁ suṣṭhu bhaktyā gatā sā yadṛcchayā sopapannena devī akalpayantyātmano vīndra vṛttiṁ cakāra yatsāvadhirādhaṁ prathaiva

That goddess attained true solitude of devotion, sustained by whatever came unsought; without contriving any elaborate scheme for her own livelihood, she conducted herself with utter devotion from the very outset.

Verse 12 (garuda.2.72.12)

sā vai vittaṁ viṣṇupādāravinde duḥ khārṇavāttarāke saṁcakāra vāgīndridriyaṁ khaga samyakcakāra harerguṇānāṁ varṇane vā sadaiva

She devoted her wealth to Vishnu's lotus feet, the deliverer from the ocean of suffering; and, O bird, she properly employed her speech ever in describing Hari's qualities.

Verse 13 (garuda.2.72.13)

hastau ca viṣṇorgṛhasaṁmārjanādau cakāra devī gātramalāpahāram śrotraṁ ca cakre harisatkathodaye mokṣādimārge hyamṛtopame ca

The goddess used her hands in sweeping Vishnu's house and the like, removing the body's impurity through such service; and she employed her ears in hearing Hari's sacred story, upon the path to liberation, a story like nectar.

Verse 14 (garuda.2.72.14)

netraṁ ca cakre pratimādidarśane anādikālīnamalāpahariṇī sadvaiṣṇavānāṁ sparśane caiva saṁge nirmālyagandhānuvilepane tvak

She employed her eyes in beholding the sacred images, the remover of beginningless impurity; and her skin in touching and associating with true Vaishnavas, and in anointing herself with the fragrance of Hari's worn floral remains.

Verse 15 (garuda.2.72.15)

ghrārṇedriyaṁ sā haripādasāre cakāra saṁsāravimuktide ca jihvendriyaṁ harinaivedyaśeṣe śrīmattulasyādivimiśrite ca

She employed her sense of smell upon the essence of Hari's feet, that which grants liberation from worldly bondage; and her tongue upon the remnant of Hari's food-offering, mixed with the sacred tulasi and the like.

Verse 16 (garuda.2.72.16)

pādau hareḥ kṣetrapathānusarpaṇe śiro hṛṣīkeśapadābhivandane kāmaṁ hṛdāsye tu haridāsyakāmyā tathottamaślokajanāścaranti

Her feet she employed in walking the paths to Hari's sacred fields, her head in venerating Hrishikesha's feet; her heart's desire was fixed on the wish for Hari's servitude alone — thus do those celebrated in song conduct themselves.

Verse 17 (garuda.2.72.17)

niṣkāmarūpe ca matiṁ cakāra vāgindriyaṁ stavanaṁ svīcakāra evaṁ sadā kāryasamūhamātmanā samarpayitvā parameśapādayoḥ

She fixed her mind upon the desireless state, and made her speech devoted to Hari's praise. Thus, having ever offered up the entirety of her actions to the feet of the Supreme Lord—

Verse 18 (garuda.2.72.18)

tīrthāṭanārthaṁ tu jagāma pitrā sākaṁ hareḥ prīṇanādyarthameva ārādhayitvā brāhmaṇānviṣṇubhaktānādau gṛhe vastrasaṁbhūṣaṇādyaiḥ

—she went, together with her father, for the sake of pilgrimage, solely to please Hari; having first honored Vishnu-devotee brahmins at home with garments and ornaments—

Verse 19 (garuda.2.72.19)

paścātkalpaṁ kārayāmāsa devī viṣṇoragre tīrthayātrārthameva yāvatkālaṁ tīrthayātrā mukunda tāvatkālaṁ tūrdhvaretā bhavāmi

—the goddess then made her resolve before Vishnu, solely for the sake of the pilgrimage: 'O Mukunda, for as long as this pilgrimage lasts, I shall remain in unbroken continence—'

Verse 20 (garuda.2.72.20)

yāvatkālaṁ tīrthayātrāṁ kariṣye tāvaddattādvaiṣṇavānāṁ ca saṁgam hareḥ kathāśravaṇaṁ syānmukunda nāvaiṣṇavānāṁ saṁgināmaṅgasaṁgam

'—for as long as I undertake this pilgrimage, I shall keep only the company of Vaishnavas. May there be the hearing of Hari's story, O Mukunda, and no bodily contact with the company of non-Vaishnavas.'

Verse 21 (garuda.2.72.21)

suhṛjjanaiḥ putramitrādikaiśca dīrthāṭanaṁ naiva kuryāṁ mukunda kurvanti ye kāmyayā tīrthayātrāṁ teṣāṁ saṁgaṁ kuru dūre mukunda

'I shall never undertake this pilgrimage merely with kinsfolk, sons, friends and the like, O Mukunda; keep me far from the company of those who undertake pilgrimage out of mere worldly desire.'

Verse 22 (garuda.2.72.22)

śālagrāmaṁ ye vihāyaiva yātrāṁ kurvanti teṣāṁ kiṁ phalaṁ prāhurāryāḥ yadā tīrthānāṁ darśanaṁ syāttadaiva śālagrāmaṁ purataḥ sthāpayitvā

What fruit, the wise ask, do those obtain who undertake pilgrimage while forsaking the Shalagrama-stone? Whenever there is the sighting of sacred fords, one should first set the Shalagrama before oneself—

Verse 23 (garuda.2.72.23)

tīrthāṭanaṁ pādacairaiḥ kṛtaṁ cetpūrṇaṁ phalaṁ prāhurāryāḥ khagendra pādatrāṇaṁ pādarakṣāṁ ca kṛtvā tīrthāṭanaṁ pādahīnaṁ tadāhuḥ

—if pilgrimage is undertaken on foot, the wise, O lord of birds, declare it to bear complete fruit; but if undertaken wearing shoes or foot-protection, they call that pilgrimage deficient in true foot-travel.

Verse 24 (garuda.2.72.24)

yo vāhane turage copaviṣṭastīrthāṭanaṁ kurute cārdhahīnam vṛṣādīnāṁ vāhane pādamāhuḥ parānnānāṁ bhojane vyarthamāhuḥ

He who undertakes pilgrimage seated upon a vehicle or horse performs it as only half-complete; riding upon an ox or the like reduces it by a quarter; but eating another's food renders it entirely fruitless.

Verse 25 (garuda.2.72.25)

mahātmanāṁ vedavidāṁ yatīnāṁ parānnānāṁ bhojane naiva doṣaḥ saṁkalpayitvā paramādareṇa jagāma sā tīrthayātrārthameva

There is no fault, however, in eating the food of great souls, Veda-knowers, or ascetics. Having thus resolved with the utmost reverence, she set out solely for the pilgrimage.

Verse 26 (garuda.2.72.26)

ādau snātvā harinirmātyagandhaṁ visarjayitvā śravaṇaṁ vai cakāra pitrā sākaṁ bhojanaṁ cāpi kṛtvā agre dine krośamekaṁ jagāma

First bathing, offering Hari's floral fragrance, she engaged in scriptural hearing; and, having taken her meal with her father, on the next day she journeyed one krosha.

Verse 27 (garuda.2.72.27)

tatra dvijānpūjayitvānnapāna rātrau tattvaṁ śrāvayāmāsa devī evaṁ yātrāṁ ye prakurvanti nityaṁ teṣāṁ yātrāṁ saphalāṁ prāhurāryāḥ

There, having honored brahmins with food and drink, the goddess, at night, had the sacred truths recited to her. The wise declare the pilgrimage of those who thus constantly journey to be truly fruitful.

Verse 28 (garuda.2.72.28)

vinā dayāṁ tīrthayātrā khagendravyarthetyevaṁ vīndra cāhurmahāntaḥ divā rātrau ye na śṛṇvanti divyāṁ hareḥ kathāṁ tīrthamārge khagendra

Pilgrimage without compassion, O lord of birds, is declared in vain — thus the great ones say. Those who, by day or night, do not hear the divine story of Hari along the pilgrim path—

Verse 29 (garuda.2.72.29)

vyarthaṁvyarthaṁ tasya cāhurgataṁ vai aśvādīnāṁ vāhanānāṁ ca viddhi aśvādīnāmaparādhaṁ vadasva gaṅgādīnāṁ darśanātpāpanāśaḥ

—their journey is declared utterly in vain; know this also of horses and other mounts. Tell me what offense belongs to horses and the like? By the mere sight of the Ganga and other sacred rivers, the destruction of sin occurs—

Verse 30 (garuda.2.72.30)

kṣetrasthaviṣṇordarśanātpāpanāśo mārjārasyāpyaparādhaṁ vadasva kṣetrasthaviṣṇoḥ pūjanātpāpanāśaḥ pūjāvatāmaparādhaṁ vadasva

—by the sight of Vishnu present in a sacred field, the destruction of sin occurs; tell me what offense belongs even to a cat present there? By the worship of Vishnu in a sacred field, the destruction of sin occurs; tell me what offense belongs to the worshippers?

Verse 31 (garuda.2.72.31)

japādīnāṁ kurvatāṁ pāpanāśo viṣṇordhyānātsadya evāghanāśaḥ anusaṁdhānādrahitaṁ sarvameva kṛtaṁ vyarthameveti cāhuḥ

For those performing japa and the like, sin is destroyed; through meditation on Vishnu, sin is instantly destroyed. Yet anything at all done devoid of proper mindful reflection is said to be done in vain.

Verse 32 (garuda.2.72.32)

ato hareḥ pāpavināśinīṁ kathāṁ śrutvā viṣṇorbhaktimānsyātkhagendra dṛṣṭvādṛṣṭvā haripādāṅkitaṁ ca smṛtvāsmṛtvā bhaktimānsyātkhagendra

Hence, O lord of birds, hearing Hari's sin-destroying story, one becomes devoted to Vishnu; beholding, again and again, places marked by Hari's footprint, and remembering him again and again, one becomes devoted.

Verse 33 (garuda.2.72.33)

pitrā sākaṁ kanyakā sāpi vīndra śeṣācalasthaṁ śrīnivāsaṁ ca draṣṭum jagāma sā mārgamadhye hariṁ ca sā cintayāmāsa ramāpatiṁ ca

That maiden too, O best of kings, together with her father, journeyed to see Shrinivasa dwelling on Sheshachala; along the way, she constantly contemplated Hari, the Lord of Rama.

Verse 34 (garuda.2.72.34)

kadā drakṣye śrīnivāsasya vakṣaḥ śrīvatsaratnairbhūṣitaṁ vistṛtaṁ ca kadā drakṣye śrīnivāsasya tundaṁ valitrayeṇāṅkitaṁ suṁdaraṁ ca

'When shall I behold Shrinivasa's broad chest, adorned with the Shrivatsa mark and gems? When shall I behold Shrinivasa's belly, marked with three folds, so beautiful?'

Verse 35 (garuda.2.72.35)

kadā drakṣye śrīnivāsasya kaṇṭhaṁ maharlokasyāśrayaṁ kaṁbutulyam kadā drakṣye śrīnivāsasya nābhiṁ sadāntarikṣasyāśrayaṁ vai supūrṇam

'When shall I behold Shrinivasa's neck, the very support of Maharloka, like a conch? When shall I behold Shrinivasa's navel, the ever-full support of the intermediate space?'

Verse 36 (garuda.2.72.36)

kadā drakṣye vadanaṁ vai murārerjanalokasyāśrayaṁ sarvadaiva

'When shall I behold Murari's face, the ever-abiding support of Janaloka?'

Verse 37 (garuda.2.72.37)

śiraḥ kadā śrīnivāsasya drakṣye satyasya lokasyāśrayaṁ sarvadaiva kaṭiṁ kadā śrīnivāsasya drakṣye bhūrlokasyāśrayaṁ sarvadaiva

'When shall I behold Shrinivasa's head, the ever-abiding support of Satyaloka? When shall I behold Shrinivasa's waist, the ever-abiding support of Bhurloka?'

Verse 38 (garuda.2.72.38)

kadā drakṣye śrīnivāsasya coru talātalasyāśrayaṁ sarvadaiva kadā drakṣye śrīnivāsasya jānu sukomalaṁ sutalasyāśrayaṁ ca

'When shall I behold Shrinivasa's thigh, the ever-abiding support of Talatala? When shall I behold Shrinivasa's knee, so soft, the support of Sutala?'

Verse 39 (garuda.2.72.39)

kadā drakṣye śrīnivāsasya jaṅghe rasātalasyāśrayeḥ sarvadaiva kadā drakṣye pādatalaṁ hareśca pātālalokasyāśrayaṁ sarvadaiva

'When shall I behold Shrinivasa's calves, the ever-abiding support of Rasatala? When shall I behold Hari's soles, the ever-abiding support of Patalaloka?'

Verse 40 (garuda.2.72.40)

itthaṁ mārge cintayantī ca devī śeṣācale śeṣadevaṁ dadarśa phaṇaiḥ sahasraiḥ suvirājamānaṁ nānādrumairvānarairvānarībhiḥ

Thus contemplating along the way, the goddess beheld, on Sheshachala, the serpent-lord Shesha, magnificently resplendent with his thousand hoods, the mountain adorned with various trees, monkeys, and she-monkeys.

Verse 41 (garuda.2.72.41)

ananta janmārjitapuṇyasaṁcayānmayādya dṛṣṭaḥ paramācalo hi taddarśanādvāṣpakalākulekṣaṇā sadyaḥ samutthāya nanāma mūrdhnā

'Through the accumulated merit of endless births, I have today beheld this supreme mountain.' At that sight, her eyes filled with trembling tears, she at once rose and bowed her head.

Verse 42 (garuda.2.72.42)

mukhaṁ ca dṛṣṭvā namanaṁ ca kāryaṁ pṛṣṭhādibhāge namanaṁ na kāryam sāpi dviṣaṭkaṁ namanaṁ ca cakre śālagrāmaṁ sthāpayitvā puro'sya

Prostration should be done upon beholding the mountain's face; prostration should not be done to its back and other parts. She too performed twelve prostrations, having set the Shalagrama before her.

Verse 43 (garuda.2.72.43)

itthaṁ kāryaṁ vaiṣṇavaiḥ parvatasya tvaṁ vaiṣṇavairviparītaṁ ca kāryam madhvāntaḥsthaḥ parvatāgresti nityaṁ ramābrahmādyaiḥ pūjitaḥ śrīnivāsaḥ

Thus should Vaishnavas act toward the mountain; the opposite conduct belongs only to non-Vaishnavas. Madhva ever dwells within, atop the mountain; there Shrinivasa is worshipped by Rama, Brahma, and the others.

Verse 44 (garuda.2.72.44)

susattamaṁ paramaṁ śrīnivāsaṁ drakṣye'thāhaṁ hyārurukṣe'calañca ityevamuktvā kapilākhyatīrthe sthānaṁ cakre sā svapitrā sahaiva

'I shall now behold the most excellent, supreme Shrinivasa, and I wish to ascend the mountain.' Having said this, she made her lodging at the ford called Kapila, together with her father.

Verse 45 (garuda.2.72.45)

atraivāste śrīnivāso haristu dravyeṇa rūpeṇa na cānyatheti ādau snātvā muṇḍanaṁ tatra kṛtvā tīrthaśrāddhaṁ kārayitvā sutīrthe

'Here indeed dwells Shrinivasa Hari, in substance and in form, and not otherwise.' First bathing, then performing the tonsure there, and having performed the ancestral rite at the sacred ford—
