The Order of Ascending Venkatesha Hill, Its Devotees, and the Names of the Mountain

Chapter 72All chaptersChapter 74

Verse 1 (garuda.2.73.1)

jaigīṣavya uvāca kanye śṛṇu tvaṁ veṅkaṭākhyācalasya smerānanāṁ puṇyamāṁrohaṇe'sya śrīgītāyāḥ paṭhanaṁ caiva kurvannārohaṇaṁ kurute sarvalokaḥ

Jaigishavya said: O maiden, hear now of the sacred, smiling ascent of the mountain called Venkata. Reciting the Shri Gita, all the people undertake this climb.

Verse 2 (garuda.2.73.2)

padepade śrīnivāsaśca devastvalaṁ hyalaṁ prīyate bhaktavargaḥ taṁ prīṇayanmokṣamāyānti sarve harau tuṣṭe kimalabhyaṁ ca kanye

At every step, the god Shrinivasa is greatly pleased with his devotees; by pleasing him, all attain liberation — when Hari is pleased, O maiden, what remains unattainable?

Verse 3 (garuda.2.73.3)

sopānadeśe yaḥ purāṇaṁ śṛṇoti tadā kṛtā sarvatīrthādiyātrā tadā divā prastuvantīha mārge sadā hariṁ śrīnivāsaṁ guruṁ ca

Whoever hears the Purana at the place of the steps has, as it were, completed the pilgrimage of every sacred ford; by day, along the path, one should ever remember Hari Shrinivasa and the Guru.

Verse 4 (garuda.2.73.4)

sopānānāṁ mahimānaṁ ca śrutvā śālagrāmaṁ sthāpayitvā ca tatra namaskṛtvā punarevāpi sā tu sopānāni tvārurohātha sādhvī

Having heard the glory of the steps, and having set the Shalagrama there, and having bowed again, the virtuous woman then ascended the steps.

Verse 5 (garuda.2.73.5)

sopānānāṁ vīndra cārohaṇena tvavaiṣṇavānāṁ haritoṣo na caiva tenaiva teṣāṁ sādhanaṁ bhūya eva tamasyandhe pātayituṁ khagendra

O best of kings, even by ascending these steps, non-Vaishnavas never gain Hari's pleasure; rather, that very act becomes the means of casting them into blind darkness, O lord of birds.

Verse 6 (garuda.2.73.6)

sthalesthale evamevāpi kāryaṁ jaigīṣavyaṁ punarevāha devī kanyovāca jaigīṣavyaḥ śrīnivāso haristu brahmādīnāṁ dṛśyate śrīnivāsaḥ

This same conduct should be followed at every place — thus saying, the maiden again asked Jaigishavya. The maiden said: 'O Jaigishavya, how does Hari Shrinivasa appear to Brahma and the others?'

Verse 7 (garuda.2.73.7)

jaigīṣavya kṛpayā tvaṁ vadasva jaigīṣavyo hyevamukto hariṁ tu uvāca kanyāṁ somaputrīṁ satīṁ ca brahmādīnāṁ dṛśyate śrīnivāsaḥ

'O Jaigishavya, tell me this out of your kindness.' Thus addressed, Jaigishavya told the virtuous daughter of Soma about Hari: 'Shrinivasa appears to Brahma and the others thus—'

Verse 8 (garuda.2.73.8)

anantarūpodhikakāntakāntimānrūdrādīnāṁ dṛśyate veṅkaṭeśaḥ sasūryalakṣādhikakāntakāntito rudrādīnāṁ dṛśyate śrīnivāsaḥ

'—in endless form, exceedingly resplendent, Venkatesha appears to Rudra and the others; more radiant than hundreds of thousands of suns, Shrinivasa appears to Rudra and the others.'

Verse 9 (garuda.2.73.9)

sahasrasūryādhikakāntikāntaḥ savidyuttvānmānuṣāṇāṁ rameśaḥ ṛṣyādīnāṁ dṛśyate candravacca sanmānuṣāṇāmaparokṣo haristu

'More radiant than a thousand suns, lightning-like in splendor, the Lord of Rama appears to humans; to sages he appears like the moon; to virtuous humans, Hari appears directly.'

Verse 10 (garuda.2.73.10)

nakṣatravaddṛśyate śrīnivāsaḥ sadā ṛṣīṇāmaparokṣo haristu sa sūryavaddṛśyate śrīnivāsaḥ saṁsāriṇāṁ veṅkaṭeśaḥ khagendra

'Shrinivasa appears to sages like a star, ever directly; O lord of birds, to worldly people he appears like the sun.'

Verse 11 (garuda.2.73.11)

saṁdohavaddṛśyate vai prakāśo mithyāvatāṁ dṛśyate śrīnivāsaḥ pāṣāṇavannailyarūpaprakāśaḥ śilāmātre dṛṣyate vai kalau ca

'To those of false belief, his light appears hazy; in the Kali age, only a bluish stone-like radiance appears, merely in the sacred stone.'

Verse 12 (garuda.2.73.12)

nṛṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ śrīnivāso haristu kalau svarūpaṁ śrīnivāsasya devī na mānuṣāḥ pravijānanti sarve yataḥ kalau tāmasā rājasāstu

'O goddess, in the Kali age Shrinivasa's true form is not seen by all men, because in the Kali age people are of tamasic and rajasic nature—'

Verse 13 (garuda.2.73.13)

tatsaṁginaḥ sāttvikāḥ kecideva hyato bhaktā durlabhā vai kalau ca ye dṛśyante bhaktavatte na bhaktāḥ śiśrodarayorbharaṇe caiva saktāḥ

'—only a few among them who dwell with the sattvic are truly virtuous, hence in the Kali age true devotees are rare. Those who appear like devotees but are not, remain attached only to comfort and self-nourishment—'

Verse 14 (garuda.2.73.14)

kurvanti yātrāṁ ca tadarthameva bhaktijñānaṁ durlabhaṁ vai kalau ca bhaktā ye vai na viraktāḥ sadaiva teṣāṁ harerdarśanaṁ durlabhaṁ ca

'—they undertake pilgrimage for that purpose alone; in the Kali age true devotional knowledge is rare. Those devotees who are not ever detached find Hari's sight hard to attain.'

Verse 15 (garuda.2.73.15)

bhaktasvarūpaṁ tava vakṣye khagendra yo jñānapūrṇaḥ parame snigdha eva na ca dveṣairbandhuro bhaktiyuktastava dveṣāñchṛṇu vakṣye ca samyak

O lord of birds, I shall now tell you the true nature of a devotee — one who is full of knowledge, deeply affectionate toward the Supreme, and free of malice; now let me also properly describe what constitutes malice.

Verse 16 (garuda.2.73.16)

jīvābhidā hariṇāprākṛtena svatantreṇa hyasvatantrasya nityam jñānānandaiḥ paripūrṇe harau ca guṇairapūrṇo harirityeva cintā

There is an eternal difference between the dependent jiva and the transcendent, independent Hari; Hari is complete in knowledge and bliss — to think 'Hari is incomplete in qualities' is itself malice.

Verse 17 (garuda.2.73.17)

śrībrahmarudrādidivaukasāṁ sadā tathā dvijānāṁ saṁmānāyāśca cintā viṣṇoḥ sakāśādbrahmarudrādikānāṁ sadādhikyālocanaṁ dveṣa eva

To be always preoccupied with the honor of Shri, Brahma, Rudra and the other gods, and Brahmins in the same category as Vishnu, and to consider Brahma, Rudra and the others as superior to Vishnu — this itself is malice.

Verse 18 (garuda.2.73.18)

viṣṇorbhadre hastapādādikānāṁ bhedajñānaṁ dveṣamāhurmahāntaḥ avatārāṇā chedabhedādikaṁ ca tathocyate maraṇasyāpi cintā

O gracious one, the great ones call it malice to imagine difference among Vishnu's limbs, or to imagine gaps and divisions among his incarnations, or to entertain the notion of his mortality.

Verse 19 (garuda.2.73.19)

tadbhaktānāṁ dveṣaṇaṁ cāhurāryāstadvākyānāṁ dūṣaṇaṁ dveṣa eva naca dveṣaiḥ saṁyutā ye ca loke kanye dṛśyante na tu bhaktāḥ kadācit

The wise say that harboring enmity toward his devotees, and finding fault with their words, is likewise malice. O maiden, those endowed with such malice are never truly seen as devotees in this world.

Verse 20 (garuda.2.73.20)

kanyovāca jaigīṣavya brūhi me ke ca bhaktā bhaktiṁ kathaṁ darśayāmāsurete teṣāṁ hariḥ śrīnivāso mahātmā trātā sadā bhaktavarge dayāluḥ

The maiden said: O Jaigishavya, tell me who those devotees were, and how they showed their devotion. Hari Shrinivasa, the great soul, is ever the compassionate protector of his devotees.

Verse 21 (garuda.2.73.21)

jaigīṣavyastvevamukto mahātmā uvāca kanyāṁ saṁsmaran bhaktavaryaḥ jaigīṣavya uvāca prahādādyā śrīnivāsasya bhaktāḥ kṛtvā nṛsiṁhe cottamāṁ bhaktimeva

Thus asked, the great soul Jaigishavya, foremost among devotees, calling those devotees to mind, spoke to the maiden. Jaigishavya said: Prahlada and others were devotees of Shrinivasa, who, through supreme devotion to Nrisimha—

Verse 22 (garuda.2.73.22)

avāpa sāmrājyamanuttamaṁ ca jñānaṁ nṛsiṁhātsamavāpa paścāt parāśaraḥ śrīnibāsasya bhakto bhaktiṁ kṛtvā vyāsarūpaṁ hariṁ ca

—obtained an unmatched kingdom, and afterward received knowledge from Nrisimha. Parashara was a devotee of Shrinivasa, who, through devotion and praise of Hari in his Vyasa-form—

Verse 23 (garuda.2.73.23)

stutvā tena jñānatattvaṁ hyavāpya jagāma mokṣaṁ bhaktisaṁvardhitātmā yo nāradaḥ śrīnivāsasya bhakto bhaktiṁ kṛtvā garbhavāse harau ca

—attained the truth of knowledge and, his soul enriched by devotion, went to liberation. Narada was a devotee of Shrinivasa, who, even while in the womb, showed devotion to Hari—

Verse 24 (garuda.2.73.24)

tayā bhaktyā brahmaputratvamāpa jñānaprāptyā tena muktiṁ jagāma yo hyaṁbarīṣaḥ śrīnivāsasya bhaktaḥ kṛtvā bhaktiṁ paradeva harau ca

—through that devotion attained the status of Brahma's son, and through attaining knowledge went to liberation. Ambarisha was a devotee of Shrinivasa, who, through devotion to the Supreme Lord Hari—

Verse 25 (garuda.2.73.25)

japtvā jñānaṁ prāpya durvāsakaścāpyavāpa mokṣaṁ tena saṁvardhitātmā mucukundo vai śrīnivāsasya bhakto vairāgyato bhaktidārḍhyaṁ ca kṛtvā

—through japa attained knowledge, and even Durvasa attained liberation, his soul enriched by devotion. Muchukunda was a devotee of Shrinivasa, who, through dispassion, achieved firmness in devotion—

Verse 26 (garuda.2.73.26)

tattvajñānaṁ prāpya viṣṇormahātmā hyavāpa mokṣaṁ tena saṁvardhitātmā sa puṇḍarīkaḥ śrīnivāsasya bhaktaḥ pitrādiṣṭo viṣṇubhaktiṁ ca kṛtvā

—attained the true knowledge of Vishnu and, as a great soul enriched by devotion, obtained liberation. Pundarika was a devotee of Shrinivasa, who, at his father's command, performed devotion to Vishnu—

Verse 27 (garuda.2.73.27)

hariprāsādājjñānamanuttamaṁ cāpyavāpa mokṣaṁ bhaktisaṁvardhitātmā brahmā ca vāyuśca sarasvatī ca jñātavyāḥ sarve ṛjuyoginaśca

—obtained unmatched knowledge through Hari's grace, and, his soul enriched by devotion, attained liberation. Brahma, Vayu, and Sarasvati are all to be known as straightforward yogis—

Verse 28 (garuda.2.73.28)

acchinnabhaktāśca sadā murārerna kāmyaraktāḥ śuddharūpā hi te ca girīśanāgeśakhageśasaṁjñā devāḥ śukrārau gurucandrendusūryāḥ

—unbroken devotees of Murari, never bound by worldly desire, ever of pure nature. The gods named Girisha, Nagesha, Khagesha, Shukra, Guru, Chandra, and Surya—

Verse 29 (garuda.2.73.29)

jaleśognirmanudharmau kuberaḥ vighneśanāsatyamarudgaṇāśca parjanyamitrādaya eva sarve sadā hyete śrīnivāsasya bhaktāḥ

—Jalesha (Varuna), Agni, Manu, Dharma, Kubera, Vighnesha, the Ashvins, and the Marut-hosts; Parjanya, Mitra, and all the rest are ever devotees of Shrinivasa.

Verse 30 (garuda.2.73.30)

viśvāmitro bhṛguraurvaśca kutso marīciratriḥ pulahaḥ kratuśca śaktirvasiṣṭho sautamīyo pulastyo bhāradvājaḥ śrīnivāsasya bhaktāḥ

Vishvamitra, Bhrigu, Aurva, Kutsa, Marichi, Atri, Pulaha, Kratu, Shakti, Vasishtha, Gautama's son, Pulastya, and Bharadvaja — these are all devotees of Shrinivasa.

Verse 31 (garuda.2.73.31)

māndhātā nahuṣoṁbarīṣasagarau rājā pṛthurhaihayo ikṣvākurbharato yayātisutalau dharmo vikukṣistathā uttānaśca bibhīṣaṇo daśaratho hyete mahājñāninaḥ śrīmadveṅkaṭanāyakasya ca gurorbhaktāḥ sadā saṁsmṛtāḥ

Mandhata, Nahusha, Ambarisha, Sagara, King Prithu, Haihaya, Ikshvaku, Bharata, Yayati's son Sutala, Dharma, Vikukshi, Uttanapada, Vibhishana, Dasharatha — these great sages are ever remembered as devotees of the guru Shrimad Venkata-nayaka.

Verse 32 (garuda.2.73.32)

bhāgīrathī samudraśca yamunā ca sarasvatī godāvarī narmadā ca kṛṣṇā bhīmarathī tathā

Bhagirathi (the Ganga), the ocean, the Yamuna, the Sarasvati, the Godavari, the Narmada, the Krishna, the Bhimarathi—

Verse 33 (garuda.2.73.33)

sarayūphalgukāverīgaṇḍakī kapilā stathā ityetāśca harerbhaktāḥ saṁti cātraiva bhāmini

—the Sarayu, the Phalgu, the Kaveri, the Gandaki, the Kapila — these too, O radiant one, are here devotees of Hari.

Verse 34 (garuda.2.73.34)

abhiprāyaṁ tatra vakṣye śṛṇu kanye mayā sati yatra pravartate mārge kathā viṣṇormahātmanaḥ

I shall now tell you the meaning of this — listen, O maiden. Wherever the story of the great Lord Vishnu is present—

Verse 35 (garuda.2.73.35)

vartante vaiṣṇavā yatra haritattvārthabodhakāḥ tatraiva bhaktāḥ sarvepi saṁti viṣṇostathaiva ca

—and wherever Vaishnavas who explain the truth of Hari dwell, there indeed all the devotees of Vishnu are also present.

Verse 36 (garuda.2.73.36)

ye devayātrāṁ paramātmacintayā kurvanti te haribhaktāśca nānye yato harau parame vaiṣṇavānāṁ sarvaṁ niṣṭhāmeti kṛtyaṁ khagendra

Those who undertake pilgrimage with contemplation of the Supreme Soul are indeed devotees of Hari, none other; for, O lord of birds, all duty of the Vaishnavas culminates in the Supreme Hari alone.

Verse 37 (garuda.2.73.37)

He who, having reached Sheshachala, does not give food, garments, and ornaments in charity, is indeed no devotee — what greater beast is there than he?

Verse 38 (garuda.2.73.38)

bhaktā hareḥ śrīnivāsācale ca gaṅgādirūpeṇa ca tatratatra tiṣṭhanti sevārthamurukramasya teṣāṁ pūjā naiva kāryā ca devi

Hari's devotees dwell on the Shrinivasa mountain here and there in forms such as the Ganga, for the service of the Wide-Strider (Vishnu); they should not, however, be [separately] worshipped, O goddess.

Verse 39 (garuda.2.73.39)

abhiprāyaṁ tatra vakṣye śṛṇu tvaṁ tatra sthale vastragandhādidhūpaiḥ purāṇoktā api bhedena pūjyā dṛṣṭvā ca tānvandayetprājña eva

I shall tell you the meaning of this — at that place, with garments, fragrances, and incense, they are, as declared in the scriptures, to be honored with due distinction; the wise person, having beheld them, should offer veneration.

Verse 40 (garuda.2.73.40)

sadbrāhmaṇānvandayetpādamūle hastau ca dvau saṁpuṭīkṛtya devi sāṣṭāṅgarupaṁ vandanaṁ caiva viṣṇoḥ kuryāttathā gurave viṣṇubuddhyā

True Brahmins should be venerated at their feet, with hands joined together, O goddess; Vishnu should be venerated with full prostration, and the Guru likewise, with the cognition of Vishnu.

Verse 41 (garuda.2.73.41)

gaṅgādīnāṁ vandanaṁ kāryameva sāṣṭāṅgaṁ vai tulasīnāṁ tathaiva aśvatthānāṁ namanaṁ kāryameva gavādīnāṁ namanaṁ mānasena

The Ganga and the rest should be venerated with full prostration, likewise the tulasi; the ashvattha tree should be bowed to, and cows and the like should be venerated mentally.

Verse 42 (garuda.2.73.42)

pūjā sadā devadevasya viṣṇoḥ kāryā bhaktyā vaiṣṇavaireva nānyaiḥ ye nāmakā jñānavantaḥ subhaktāḥ sadaiva kāryā viṣṇupūjā ca kanye

Worship of the God of gods, Vishnu, should always be performed only by Vaishnavas, with devotion, never by others. Those who are devotees of true knowledge, not merely in name, should ever be entrusted with Vishnu's worship, O maiden.

Verse 43 (garuda.2.73.43)

ye nāmakā jñānavantaḥ subhaktāḥ sadaivaṁ kāryā viṣṇupūjā ca kanye yenāmakā viṣṇubhaktāḥ sadaiva pūjā viṣṇornaiva kāryātra devi

Those who are devotees of true knowledge, not merely in name, should ever perform Vishnu's worship, O maiden; those who are Vishnu-devotees only in name should not be entrusted with Vishnu's worship, O goddess.

Verse 44 (garuda.2.73.44)

mohādyo vai pūjayeddevadevaṁ mahādharmādyāti cāndhaṁ tamo vai brahmādināmāni harerhi devīṁ viṣṇoḥ svanāmāni dadau divaukasām

He who worships the God of gods out of delusion goes, through great unrighteousness, into blind darkness. O goddess, Hari gave his own names to Brahma and the others; Vishnu gave his own names to the celestials—

Verse 45 (garuda.2.73.45)

nādāddhīraḥ keśavādīni kanye svakaṁ puraṁ pravihāyaiva rājā evaṁ mayoktaṁ kanyake sarvametadetatparaṁ samyagārohaṇīyam

—and accepting names such as 'Keshava' with steadfastness, as a king who forsakes his own city [for a greater dwelling]. O maiden, thus I have told you everything — this alone is the supreme manner of ascent.

Verse 46 (garuda.2.73.46)

govinda nārāyaṇa mādhaveti yūyaṁ mayā sarvamārādhitavyam sarve militvā punarevaṁ khagendra samāruhanvaiṅkaṭādriṁ gṛṇantaḥ

'Govinda, Narayana, Madhava' — with these names I must ever perform worship. O lord of birds, all together, uttering these very names, ascended the Venkata Hill—

Verse 47 (garuda.2.73.47)

harernāmānyatra pūrvaṁ gṛṇantastvāsvādayantaḥ śrīnivāsasya nāma draṣṭuṁ sarve śrīnivāsaṁ tathaiva kurvantaste talaśabdaṁ nadantaḥ

—first uttering Hari's names, savoring the very name of Shrinivasa; all together, to behold Shrinivasa, they climbed while resounding the cry 'tala.'

Verse 48 (garuda.2.73.48)

iti kṛṣṇavacaḥ śrutvā tārkṣyaḥ kṛṣṇamuvācaha kathamāsvādanaṁ cakruretadvistīryame vada śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca bho śrīnivāsa tava nāmaiva caitannāma svāmī nanu nāmaiva svāmī yāṁ brahmādyā āśrayantītti yasmāttasmādramā śrīriti nāma cāpa

Hearing these words of Krishna, Tarkshya (Garuda) asked Krishna: 'How did they savor it so? Please explain in detail.' Shri Krishna said: 'O Shrinivasa, your very name is Lord — the name itself is Lord, that which Brahma and the others take refuge in; hence Rama too received the name Shri—'

Verse 49 (garuda.2.73.49)

ramāśrayatvānnitarāṁ sarvadā cetyato hariḥ śrīnivāsābhidhānaḥ bho śrīnivāseti tu nartayanto romāñcamātrāstalaśabdakāriṇaḥ

—since he is ever the abode of Rama, Hari bears the name Shrinivasa. Dancing while crying 'O Shrinivasa,' their bodies thrilling with rapture, resounding the cry 'tala,' they said—

Verse 50 (garuda.2.73.50)

adyaiva paśyāma harestavāsyaṁ kadā vayaṁ kṛta kṛtyā bhavāmaḥ bhoḥ keśavādyaiva padāravindaṁ saṁdarśayitvā sudayāṁ kuruṣva

'—Today itself we shall see Hari's face; when shall we become fulfilled? O Keshava, show us your lotus feet even now and be gracious.'

Verse 51 (garuda.2.73.51)

brahmāṇamāhuśca purāṇamāhuḥ kaśabdavācyaṁ sarvalokeśamāhuḥ īśaṁ cārhaṁ rudramityeva cāhustatprerakaṁ sṛṣṭisaṁhārakārye

They call him Brahma, they call him the Purana; that which is denoted by the syllable 'ka' is called the Lord of all worlds; he is also called Isha, Arha, and Rudra, the impeller in the work of creation and dissolution.

Verse 52 (garuda.2.73.52)

ato hariḥ keśavanāmadheyo bhoḥ keśaveti ca nartayantaḥ ānandavāpīṁ saṁstravantobhi jagmurnārāyaṇeti pravadanto hi jagmuḥ

Hence Hari's name is Keshava; and, dancing while crying 'O Keshava,' streaming tears of bliss, uttering 'Narayana,' they went forward.

Verse 53 (garuda.2.73.53)

ato doṣāstadviruddhā guṇāśca nārāśca teṣāmāśrayatvānmurāriḥ nārāyaṇeti pravadantīha loke nārānubandhātsarvamuktāḥ khagendra

Hence both faults and their opposing virtues are called 'nara'; being their abode, Murari is called Narayana. In this world people say 'Narayana,' since through connection with 'nara,' all attain liberation, O lord of birds.

Verse 54 (garuda.2.73.54)

nārāḥ proktā āśrayatvācca teṣāmatopi nārāyaṇa eva vīndra muktāśca ye tu prapadaṁnu jagmuraṇḍodakaṁ yasya kaṭākṣamātrāt

They are called 'nara' because they are the abode of these; hence he is Narayana, O best of kings. And those who attained liberation went toward that water which, by his mere glance—

Verse 55 (garuda.2.73.55)

yadutpannaṁ tena nārāḥ khagendra teṣāṁ sadāpyāśrayatvācca vīndra nārāyaṇeti pravadantīha loke hyanantabrahmāṇḍavisarjakatvāt

—came into being, hence they are called 'nara,' O lord of birds; since they are ever his abode, O best of kings, people in this world say 'Narayana,' since he dissolves endless universes.

Verse 56 (garuda.2.73.56)

evaṁ nanṛtuḥ pariśaṁsayanto govinda nānyo hi na caiva darśanam gośabdavācyāstu samastavāco gobhiśca sarvaiḥ pratipādyate yataḥ

Thus, praising him as 'Govinda,' they danced — there is indeed no other vision. All speech is denoted by the word 'go,' since all speech is expounded through the 'go' (the Vedic word)—

Verse 57 (garuda.2.73.57)

ato hi govinda iti smṛtaḥ sadā bho vedavedyeti tathā na nanṛtuḥ ānandabāṣpaiśca samanvitā hi hare murāre tava darśanaṁ hi

—hence he is ever remembered as Govinda. Crying 'O Vedavedya (knowable through the Vedas)' too, they danced likewise, filled with tears of bliss — 'O Hari, O Murari, your very sight—'

Verse 58 (garuda.2.73.58)

dehi prabho vai tavadāsadāsāścaturdaśe bhuvane sarvadāpi yatastvamevaṁ vasatīti vāsuścātraiva nityaṁ krīḍate sarvadaiva

'—grant us, O Lord! We, the servants of your servants, are ever present throughout the fourteen worlds. Since you dwell thus, you are called 'Vasu,' and you ever sport here—'

Verse 59 (garuda.2.73.59)

yato devetyevamāhurmahāntastvato hariṁ vāsudeveti cāhuḥ bho vāsudeveti nanṛtuḥ sarvadaiva bho mādhaveti nanṛtuścaiva sarve

'—since you are Deva (the divine), the great ones call you Vasudeva.' Crying 'O Vasudeva,' they ever danced, and all danced too while crying 'O Madhava'—

Verse 60 (garuda.2.73.60)

lakṣmīpate ceti vadanti sarve dhanīti śabdaḥ svābhivācī yato hi atopyāryā mādhaveti bruvanti lakṣmīpate pāhi tathaiva bhaktān

—all say 'Lakshmi-pati' (Lord of Lakshmi), since the word 'wealthy' declares its own meaning. Hence the wise say 'Madhava,' and also say, 'O Lord of Lakshmi, protect your devotees.'

Verse 61 (garuda.2.73.61)

te vai bruvanto nanṛtuśca jagmurviṣṇo sadāsmānparipāhi nityam sarvatra yasmādvitatosi tasmādityādināmāni gṛṇanta eva jagmuśca sarve dadṛśuśca tīrthaṁ bhaktyopetāḥ śrīnivāsaṁ smarantaḥ

Thus saying, they danced onward — 'O Vishnu, ever protect us; since you pervade everywhere, this is your name' — thus uttering his names, all went forward with devotion, remembering Shrinivasa, and beheld the sacred ford.

Verse 62 (garuda.2.73.62)

kanyovāca kiṁ nāmakaṁ tīrthamidaṁ munīndra kiṁ kāryamatra pravadāsmānkṛtīśa kasmai prasanno bhagavāñchrīnivāsastvasminsutīrthaṁ vada vistareṇa

The maiden said: O best of sages, what is the name of this sacred ford? What should be done here? Tell me, O accomplished one. On whom was Bhagavan Shrinivasa pleased at this sacred ford — tell me in detail.

Verse 63 (garuda.2.73.63)

jaigīṣavya uvāca kanye śṛṇu tvaṁ hyabhavatsubuddhimānprahrādasaṁjño haribhaktavaryaḥ niṣkāmabuddhyā tu yadā jagāma śeṣācalasthaṁ śrīnivāsaṁ ca draṣṭum

Jaigishavya said: O maiden, listen — Prahlada, foremost among Hari's devotees, was of great wisdom; when he, with a mind free of desire, went to behold Shrinivasa dwelling on Sheshachala—

Verse 64 (garuda.2.73.64)

asmiṁsthale daityakumārakānprati hareśca tattvaṁ paripṛṣṭavānprabhuḥ nṛsiṁharūpaṁ śrīnivāsaṁ bhajasva sudurlabhaṁ mānuṣaṁ janma kanye

—at this very place he taught the demon-children about Hari's truth: 'Worship Shrinivasa in his Nrisimha form; human birth is exceedingly rare, O maiden.'

Verse 65 (garuda.2.73.65)

tatrāpi viṣṇornṛhare sutattvaṁ sudurlabhaṁ suṣṭhu yātrā tathaiva yasyāṁ yātrāyāṁ yatra kutrāpi deśe hareḥ kathā vartate daityavaryāḥ

'—the true nature of Vishnu's Nrisimha form is exceedingly rare, and so too is such a pilgrimage. O best of demons, in whatever pilgrimage, wherever Hari's story is present—'

Verse 66 (garuda.2.73.66)

tatra sthale harirāste sadaiva yato vyāptaḥ sarvato vai nṛsiṁhaḥ etacchrutvā daityakumārakāste prahlādamūcurbhaktavaryaṁ hareśca

'—there Hari ever abides, since Nrisimha is present everywhere.' Hearing this, the demon-children said to Prahlada, foremost devotee of Hari—

Verse 67 (garuda.2.73.67)

vyāpto hariścetkathamatra vai sakhe na dṛśyate jalarūpī nṛsiṁhaḥ sa evamukto dānavānāṁ sutaiśca tuṣṭāva viṣṇuṁ paramādareṇa

—'If Hari is all-pervading, O friend, then why is Nrisimha not seen here in water-form?' Thus addressed, the sons of the demons praised Vishnu with the utmost reverence—

Verse 68 (garuda.2.73.68)

tava svarūpaṁ mama darśayasva svayogyarūpaṁ dānavānāṁ sutānām iti stutaḥ śrīnivāso haristu tasminnantarjalarūpaṁ samāyāt

—'Show us your form, suited to the capacity of these demon-children.' Thus praised, Hari Shrinivasa manifested within that very water.

Verse 69 (garuda.2.73.69)

asminsnānaṁ ye prakurvanti tīrthe teṣāṁ jñānaṁ paramaṁ dṛḍhaṁ syāt atra snāne mānuṣāṇāṁ ca tāta buddhirna hi syātkalikāle viśeṣāt

Those who bathe in this sacred ford obtain the most firm knowledge; in the Kali age, especially, bathing here purifies the intellect of humans, dear one.

Verse 70 (garuda.2.73.70)

dattvāṁ varaṁ daityavarāya viṣṇurantardadhe jalapūrṇe sukuṇḍe adyāpyāste jalamadhye nṛsiṁhaḥ prahlādopi daityakumārakaiḥ saha

Having granted a boon to the foremost of the demons, Vishnu vanished into that water-filled sacred pool; even today Nrisimha dwells within that water, together with Prahlada and the demon-children.

Verse 71 (garuda.2.73.71)

tasmin sutīrthe paritastatratatra jayeti śabdaḥ śrūyate cāparāhne idaṁ tīrthaṁ nārasiṁhābhidhaṁ ca kanyesnānaṁ hyatra kāryaṁ manuṣyaiḥ

Around that excellent sacred ford, in every place, the cry of 'Victory' is heard in the afternoon. O maiden, this ford is known by the name Narasimha; humans should bathe here.

Verse 72 (garuda.2.73.72)

snānaṁ kṛtvā tatra tīrthe ca samyagdīpaṁ dattvā dvijavaryāya mukhyam draṣṭuṁ punaḥ śrīnivāsaṁ prajagmurgovindagovinda iti bruvantaḥ

Having bathed well at that sacred ford, and having given a lamp to a leading brahmin, they went forward again to behold Shrinivasa, crying 'Govinda, Govinda.'

Verse 73 (garuda.2.73.73)

mukhyaprāṇādhiṣṭhitaṁ sthānamāpya apāviśattatra devī hyuvāca jaigīṣavyaḥ śrīnivāsasya viṣṇoḥ kathaṁ kāryaṁ darśanaṁ tadvadasva

Having reached the place presided over by Mukhyaprana (Vayu), they entered there; the goddess said: 'O Jaigishavya, tell me by what rite Shrinivasa Vishnu should be beheld.'

Verse 74 (garuda.2.73.74)

jaigīṣavyaḥ prāha saṁhṛṣṭacitto bravīmi tantraṁ śṛṇu kanyake tvam śrutvā mattaḥ kuru sarvaṁ mayoktamādyaṁ dvāraṁ śrīnivāsasya dṛṣṭvā

Jaigishavya, with great delight, said: 'I shall tell you this rite; listen, O maiden. Hearing it from me, do all that I have said. First, having seen Shrinivasa's first gateway—'

Verse 75 (garuda.2.73.75)

aparādhasahasrāṇi kriyante'harniśaṁ mayā tāni sarvāṇi me deva kṣamasva puruṣottama

'—day and night I commit a thousand offenses; O God, Purushottama, forgive them all.'

Verse 76 (garuda.2.73.76)

mānasānvācikāndoṣānkāyi kānapi sarvaśaḥ vaiṣṇavadveṣahetūnme bhasmasātkuru mādhava

'Reduce to ashes, O Madhava, all my faults of mind, word, and body, and every cause of enmity toward the Vaishnavas.'

Verse 77 (garuda.2.73.77)

ādyadvāraṁ śrīnivāsasya devi samyaksmaredvijayaṁ vai jayaṁ ca dakṣādhvare śrīnivāsasya devi caṇḍaṁ pracaṇḍaṁ saṁsmaretsamyageva

At Shrinivasa's first gateway, O goddess, one should properly remember Vijaya and Jaya; and at the site of Daksha's sacrifice, one should also remember Chanda and Prachanda of Shrinivasa.

Verse 78 (garuda.2.73.78)

pāścātyabhāge śrīnivāsasya devi nandaṁ sunandaṁ saṁsmaredeva bhaktyā savyadvāre śrīnivāsasya kanye smaretkumudākṣaṁ kumudantameva

In Shrinivasa's western part, O goddess, one should devotedly remember Nanda and Sunanda; at the left gate, O maiden, one should remember Kumudaksha and Kumuda.

Verse 79 (garuda.2.73.79)

yaścaiva dehaṁ praviśedbhaktipūrvaṁ kadā drakṣye sādareṇaiva devi pradakṣiṇadvādaśakaṁ ca kṛtvā pade pade saṁsmarecchrīnivāsam

Whoever enters the shrine with devotion, O goddess, thinking with reverence 'When shall I behold him?'; having performed twelve circumambulations, one should remember Shrinivasa at every step.

Verse 80 (garuda.2.73.80)

śrīsvāmitīrthe samyagācamya natvā snātvā natvā bhūvarāhaṁ ca devi ayudvāraṁ privaśedbhaktipṛrvaṁ govindagovinda itibruvanvai

Having properly sipped water at the Shri-Svami-Tirtha, having bowed and bathed, and having bowed to Bhu-Varaha, O goddess, one should enter the main gateway with devotion, crying 'Govinda, Govinda.'

Verse 81 (garuda.2.73.81)

paścāddharernamanaṁ kāryameva sāṣṭāṅgarūpaṁ praviśeddevageham punarviśedvārataḥ saṁsthitaḥ sa pīṭhasthadevānmānasā cintayīta

Then, having offered full prostration to Hari, one should enter the sanctum; going in again from the gateway, one should mentally contemplate the deities seated upon the platform.

Verse 82 (garuda.2.73.82)

madhye pīṭhaṁ śrīnivāsaṁ ca devī nārāyaṇaṁ praṇametpūrṇameva devasya savye pīṭhabhāgādvahiśca namaskāryaṁ gurudevāya caiva

In the center, the goddess should offer full prostration to Narayana Shrinivasa; to the god's right, outside the platform's edge, one should also bow to the Guru-deva.

Verse 83 (garuda.2.73.83)

pīṭhasyāgrāccāpyadhastātpradeśe āgneyakoṇe praṇamedvai khagendra nairṛtyabhāge vyāsadevāya devi namaskāryo vaiṣṇavaḥ sarvadāpi

In front of and below the platform, one should bow in the southeast corner, O lord of birds; in the southwest part, to Vyasadeva, O goddess — a Vaishnava should ever offer this salutation.

Verse 84 (garuda.2.73.84)

In the northwest corner, with devotion, one should bow to Sudurga, one's soul enriched by devotion; above the platform, in the southeast corners, salutation to the goddess and to Yama, the presiding deity of Dharma.

Verse 85 (garuda.2.73.85)

pīṭhasyordhvaṁ nairṛtasyordhvakoṇe jñānādhipaṁ praṇamedvāyudevam pīṭhasyordhvaṁ vāyukoṇe ca subhrūrvairāgyānāmadhipaṁ caiva rudram

Above the platform, in the upper southwest corner, one should bow to Vayudeva, lord of knowledge; above the platform, in the northwest corner, O fair-browed one, to Rudra, lord of dispassion.

Verse 86 (garuda.2.73.86)

pīṭhasyordhvaṁ tvīśakoṇe ca devi aiśvaryāṇāmadhipaṁ cendradevam pīṭhasya pūrve praṇamennairṛtiṁ ca aryāmṇānāmadhipaṁ cātra devi

Above the platform, in the northeast corner, O goddess, to Indradeva, lord of prosperity; to the platform's east, to Nairriti, and also to the lord of the Aryamans, O goddess—

Verse 87 (garuda.2.73.87)

devasya pīṭhasya ca dakṣiṇe ca durgāṁ namedugrarūpābhidhāṁ ca pīṭhasya kanye praṇametpaścime vai ārogyāṇā madhipaṁ kāmadevam

—to the south of the god's platform, one should bow to Durga in her fierce form; O maiden, to the west of the platform, to Kamadeva, lord of health.

Verse 88 (garuda.2.73.88)

devasya pīṭhasyottare rudradevamanaiśvaryāṇāmadhipaṁ saṁsmarecca pīṭhasya madhye praṇamedvai varāhaṁ sadā kanye paramaṁ pūruṣākhyam

To the north of the god's platform, one should remember Rudradeva, lord of ill-fortune; in the center of the platform one should ever bow, O maiden, to Varaha, called the Supreme Purusha.

Verse 89 (garuda.2.73.89)
