The Goddess's Vision of Venkatesha and Her Praise of Him
Verse 1 (garuda.2.74.1)
sā dvāradeśe śrīnivāsasya devī svāmipuṣkariṇīṁ dadṛśe kaiśca sārdham svāminhare śrīnivāseti sā taṁ brahmādīnāṁ tārakaṁ sampradadhyau
That goddess, at the gateway of Shrinivasa, beheld the Svami-Pushkarini together with her companions; crying 'O Lord, O Hari, O Shrinivasa,' she meditated deeply upon him, the deliverer of Brahma and the others.
Verse 2 (garuda.2.74.2)
devaiḥ sārdhaṁ pālanārthaṁ ca viṣṇurastyeva nityaṁ puṣkariṇyāṁ jaleṣu ataḥ svāmipuṣkariṇīti cāhustatra snānaṁ kanyakānyāśca cakruḥ
Together with the gods, for the sake of protection, Vishnu indeed ever dwells within the waters of the Pushkarini; hence they call it Svami-Pushkarini. There the maiden and the others bathed.
Verse 3 (garuda.2.74.3)
śucirbhūtvā śrīnivāsaṁ ca devāstuptuṁ viviśuḥ śuddhabhaktyā khagendra yathopadiṣṭaṁ guruṇā tathaiva cakre kanyāśca sarvaṁ khagendra
Having become pure, they entered to satisfy Shrinivasa with pure devotion, O lord of birds; just as instructed by the guru, the maiden did everything accordingly, O lord of birds.
Verse 4 (garuda.2.74.4)
tadā hariṁ darśayāmāsa tasyai svakaṁ rūpaṁ supratīke supūrṇam sā kanyakā śrīnivāsasya rūpaṁ dadarśa bhaktyā svamanobhirāmam
Then Hari showed to her his own form, complete, in that beautiful image; that maiden beheld, with devotion, the form of Shrinivasa, delightful to her own heart.
Verse 5 (garuda.2.74.5)
suvarṇacitraṁ vasanaṁ vasānaṁ soṣṇīṣakaṁ kañcukaṁ saṁdadhānam
Wearing a garment bright with gold, adorned with a turban and tunic—
Verse 6 (garuda.2.74.6)
mṛgotthamadagandhena surabhīkṛtadiṅmukham puṇḍarīkaviśālākṣaṁ kaṁbugrīvaṁ mahābhujam
—perfuming every direction with the fragrance of musk, with wide lotus-eyes, a conch-shaped neck, mighty arms—
Verse 7 (garuda.2.74.7)
hemayajñopavītāṅgaṁ sākṣātkandarpasannibham jaganmohanasaindaryaṁ komalāṅgaṁ manoharam
—a body bearing a golden sacred thread, resembling the god of love in person, of world-enchanting beauty, soft-limbed and captivating—
Verse 8 (garuda.2.74.8)
dṛṣṭvā ca kanyā mumude romāñcitasugātrakā
Beholding this, the maiden rejoiced, her beautiful body thrilling with rapture.
Verse 9 (garuda.2.74.9)
taddarśanāhlādapariplutāśayā premṇātha romāśrukulākulekṣaṇā nanarta devī puratastasya viṣṇoḥ sā dhvastadoṣā paramādareṇa ānanda māṁ pāhi sukhaṁ ca dattvā mukundā māṁ pāhi vimuktidānāt
Her heart overflowing with the joy of that sight, her eyes brimming with tears of love, the goddess, all fault dissolved, danced before Vishnu with the utmost reverence: 'O Bliss, protect me, granting happiness; O Mukunda, protect me, by the gift of liberation.'
Verse 10 (garuda.2.74.10)
māṁ pāhi nityaṁ hyaravindanetra prasannadṛṣṭyā karuṇāsudhārdra govinda govinda suduḥ khitāṁ māṁ jñānādidānena hi pāhi nityam
'O lotus-eyed one, ever protect me with your gracious, compassion-nectar-moist gaze; O Govinda, O Govinda, ever protect me, deeply sorrowful, by the gift of knowledge and the rest.'
Verse 11 (garuda.2.74.11)
janārdana tvaṁ hi suduṣṭasaṁgānkāmādirūpānsatataṁ varjayitvā hare hare māṁ satataṁ pāhi daityānsamāhṛtya prabalānvighnarūpān
'O Janardana, ever removing me from the company of the truly wicked, from those in the form of desire and the rest; O Hari, O Hari, ever protect me, subduing the powerful demons who take the form of obstacles.'
Verse 12 (garuda.2.74.12)
rameśa māṁ pāhi caturmukheśa viśveśa māṁ pāhi sarasvatīśa rameśa māṁ pāhi nidānamūrte vṛndāravṛndairvanditapādapadma
'O Lord of Rama, protect me; O Lord of the Four-Faced One; O Lord of the universe, protect me; O Lord of Sarasvati; O Lord of Rama, protect me, O foundation-form, whose lotus feet are venerated by hosts of the celestials.'
Verse 13 (garuda.2.74.13)
evaṁ tu natvā paramādareṇa tuṣṭāva viṣṇuṁ paramaṁ purāṇam lakṣmyā sadā ye'viditā guṇāśca asaṁkhyātāḥ saṁti viṣṇau ca vīśa
Having thus bowed with the utmost reverence, she praised the supreme, ancient Vishnu: 'O lord of kings, in Vishnu there exist innumerable qualities, ever unknown even to Lakshmi—'
Verse 14 (garuda.2.74.14)
teṣāṁ sakāśādatibāhulyasaṁkhyā guṇā harau te'viditā vai ramāyāḥ ato hare stavane kvāsti śaktistathāpi yatnaṁ stavane te kariṣye
'—and beyond even those, there exist in Hari qualities in far greater abundance, still unknown to Rama herself. Where then is there capacity to praise Hari? Yet still I shall make the effort to praise you.'
Verse 15 (garuda.2.74.15)
tava prasādācca ramāprasādādvidhiprasādātbhāratīśaprasādāt rudraprasādātstavanaṁ te kariṣye tathāpi viṣṇo mayi śāntiṁ kuruṣva
'Through your grace, through Rama's grace, through Brahma's grace, through the grace of Bharati's lord, through Rudra's grace, I shall offer you praise; yet still, O Vishnu, grant peace to me.'
Verse 16 (garuda.2.74.16)
yadi prasannosi mayi tvamīśa tvatpādamūle dehi bhaktiṁ sadaiva tvaddarśanāddeva śubhāśubhaṁ ca naṣṭaṁ madīyaṁ hyaśubhaṁ ca nityam
'If you are pleased with me, O Lord, then grant me devotion ever at the base of your feet; through the sight of you, O God, my own auspiciousness and inauspiciousness — my inauspiciousness — is ever destroyed.'
Verse 17 (garuda.2.74.17)
tvanmāyayā naṣṭamimaṁ ca lokaṁ madena mattaṁ badhiraṁ cāndhabhūtam aiśvaryayogena ca yo hi mūko jātaḥ sadā dīnāgurvādikeṣu
'This world, ruined by your maya, is intoxicated with pride, deaf, and blind; and one who, through the yoke of worldly power, becomes as if mute, ever wretched among cattle and the like—'
Verse 18 (garuda.2.74.18)
mā dehi aiśvaryamanuttamaṁ tvatpādāravindasya viruddhabhūtam tvaṁ deva me dehi satāṁ ca saṁgaṁ tava svarūpapratipādakānām
'—do not give me such supreme worldly power, which is contrary to your very lotus feet; grant me instead, O God, the company of the virtuous, those who expound your true nature.'
Verse 19 (garuda.2.74.19)
putrādīnāmaihikaṁ vāsudeva dagdhvā ca me dehi pādāravinde sadvaṣṇave kriyamāṇaṁ ca kopaṁ dagdhvā ca me dehi pādaravinde
'O Vasudeva, having burned away my worldly attachment to sons and the rest, grant me a place at your lotus feet; having burned away any anger directed at a true Vaishnava, grant me a place at your lotus feet.'
Verse 20 (garuda.2.74.20)
dravyādike kriyamāṇaṁ ca lobhaṁ dagdhvā vai me dehi pādābjamūle putrādike kriyamāṇaṁ ca mohaṁ dagdhvā ca me dehi pādābjamūle
'Having burned away greed for wealth and the like, grant me a place at the base of your lotus feet; having burned away delusion regarding sons and the like, grant me a place at the base of your lotus feet.'
Verse 21 (garuda.2.74.21)
vidyāṁ putraṁ dravyajātaṁ madaṁ ca dagdhvā ca me dehi pādābjamūle sadvaiṣṇavāsahamānasvarūpaṁ dagdhvā mātsaryaṁ pāhi māṁ veṅkaṭeśa
'Having burned away pride in learning, sons, wealth, and possessions, grant me a place at the base of your lotus feet; having burned away the very nature of envy that cannot bear true Vaishnavas, protect me, O Venkatesha.'
Verse 22 (garuda.2.74.22)
mantraṁ ca me dehi nidānamūrte yenaiva me syāttava saṁgaśca bhūyaḥ nānyaṁ vṛṇe tava pādābjasaṁgāttadeva me dehi mama prasannaḥ
'Grant me the mantra, O foundation-form, by which I may attain your company again; I choose nothing other than union with your lotus feet — grant me that alone, being pleased with me.'
Verse 23 (garuda.2.74.23)
itīritaḥ śrīnivāsaḥ prasanna uvāca devo hyamṛtastravaṁ ca atraiva kanye prajapasva mantraṁ sugopyarūpaṁ paramādareṇa
Thus addressed, the pleased god Shrinivasa spoke words flowing like nectar: 'O maiden, recite this mantra here itself, a most secret form, with the utmost reverence.'
Verse 24 (garuda.2.74.24)
vakṣyāmi mantraṁ paramādareṇa śṛṇvadya bhaktyā paramādareṇa antaḥ sthamantyaṁ hyādyasaṁyuktameva sabindu tadvatsparśakādyena yuktam
'I shall now tell you the mantra with the utmost reverence; hear it today with devotion, with the utmost reverence. It is composed of the last of the antahstha letters joined with the first, together with a bindu, and likewise joined with the first of the consonant group—'
Verse 25 (garuda.2.74.25)
ekārayuktaṁ prathamāntaḥ sthayuktaṁ samatrikoṇe coṣmaṇā saṁyutaṁ ca takārasaktaṁ svarśamantaḥ sthayuktamādyanta oṁkārasamanvitaṁ ca
'—joined with the vowel e, joined with the first antahstha letter, in the equal-triangle joined with the sibilant; joined with ta, with the vowel, joined with the antahstha; at beginning and end accompanied by the syllable Om.'
Verse 26 (garuda.2.74.26)
anena mantreṇa tavepsitaṁ ca bhaveddhi kanye nāntra vicāryamasti evaṁ sa uktvā śrīnivāso haristu pratīkavaddarśayāmāsa rūpam
'By this mantra, O maiden, your desire shall indeed be fulfilled — of this there is no question.' Having said this, Hari Shrinivasa displayed his form once more, as in the sacred image.
Verse 27 (garuda.2.74.27)
natvā tu sā śrīnivāsaṁ ca devī uvāsa ha svāmisaraḥ samīpe tasmindine brāhmaṇādīṁśca sarvānsaṁtarpayāmāsa ca ṣaḍrasānnaiḥ
Having bowed to Shrinivasa, the goddess then dwelt near the Svami lake; on that day she satisfied all the brahmins and others with six-flavored food.
Verse 28 (garuda.2.74.28)
sāyaṅkāle śrīnivāsasya dṛṣṭvā utsāharūpaiḥ śrīnivāsapratīkaiḥ sākaṁ bhaktyā saṁpraṇamyātha devī pradakṣiṇaṁ śrīnivāsasya suṣṭhu
In the evening, having beheld Shrinivasa in his festival images, and having devoutly bowed together with them, the goddess then duly performed circumambulation of Shrinivasa.
Verse 29 (garuda.2.74.29)
nanarta devī supratīkasya cāgre lajjāṁ tyaktvā jaya deveti coktvā ānṛttakāle ca hareśca vaktraṁ dṛṣṭvā ca dṛṣṭyā tu paraṁ nanarta
The goddess danced before the sacred image, casting off shame, crying 'Victory, O God!'; and while dancing, beholding Hari's face again and again with her gaze, she danced yet more.
Verse 30 (garuda.2.74.30)
mamādya gātraṁ pāvitaṁ śrīnivāsa mamādya netraṁ saphalaṁ saṁbabhūva mamādya pādau sārthakau caiva jātau pradakṣiṇaṁ śrīnivāseśa kṛtvā
'O Shrinivasa, today my body is purified; today my eyes have become truly fruitful. O Lord Shrinivasa, having performed circumambulation, today my very feet have become meaningful.'
Verse 31 (garuda.2.74.31)
hastau ca me sārthakāvadya jātau agre kṛtvā hastaśabdaṁ murāreḥ evaṁ vadantī prīṇayantī ca devaṁ jagāmasā stotravacaḥ kadambaiḥ
'And today my hands too have become meaningful, having clapped before Murari.' Thus speaking and pleasing the god, she proceeded, offering clusters of praising words.
Verse 32 (garuda.2.74.32)
devāstadā dunduṁbhayo vinedire tanmastake puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ ca cakruḥ tasminkāle ubhayoḥ pārśvayośca nṛtyaṁ cakrurdevatāvāranāryaḥ
Then the divine kettle-drums resounded, and a shower of flowers fell upon her head; at that time, on both sides, the celestial temple-dancers performed their dance.
Verse 33 (garuda.2.74.33)
tathaiva tāstalaśabdaṁ ca kṛtvā tadā sarvā namanaṁ cāpi cakruḥ ānandaśaile sarvadā tvitthameva sā sarvadā nartayantī ca vīndra
Likewise, resounding the cry of 'tala,' all of them then also bowed; O best of kings, upon the Hill of Bliss it is ever thus, with her dancing constantly.
Verse 34 (garuda.2.74.34)
ānandamagnā sāpi devī jagāma svamāśramaṁ jaigiṣavyeṇa sārdham yātrāmevaṁ ye na kurvanti vīndra teṣāṁ ca sarvaṁ niṣphalaṁ cāhurāryāḥ
Immersed in bliss, that goddess then returned to her hermitage together with Jaigishavya. O best of kings, the wise declare that all is fruitless for those who do not undertake the pilgrimage in this manner.
Verse 35 (garuda.2.74.35)
gatvāśramaṁ jaigiṣavyeṇa sārdhaṁ guruṁ tvapṛcchadveṅkaṭeśasya mantram mantrasyārthaṁ brūhi me jaigiṣavya mantrāvṛttiṁ kurvatāṁ vai phalāya
Having gone to the hermitage together with Jaigishavya, she asked the guru about the mantra of Venkatesha: 'Tell me the meaning of the mantra, O Jaigishavya, for the benefit of those who recite it.'
Verse 36 (garuda.2.74.36)
jaigīṣvya uvāca śṛṇuṣva bhadre veṅkaṭe śasya nāmnastvarthaṁ śrutvā hṛdaye saṁnidhatsva
Jaigishavya said: 'Listen, O gracious one, to the meaning of the name Venkatesha; having heard it, fix it firmly in your heart.'
Verse 37 (garuda.2.74.37)
viti hyuttamavācī syādyeti jñānamudāhṛtam kakāraḥ sukhavācī syāṭṭeti cittamudāhṛtam
'"Vi" denotes the highest; "ye" denotes knowledge; "ka" denotes happiness; "ṭe" denotes the mind.'
Verse 38 (garuda.2.74.38)
īśatvamātmavāci syādevaṁ jñeyaṁ tu kanyake pūrṇajñānaṁ sukhaṁ vittaṁ vyāptatvādvyaṅkaṭābhidhaḥ
'"Ishatva" (lordship) denotes the self — this is to be understood thus, O maiden. Complete knowledge, happiness, and wealth, on account of their pervasiveness, give rise to the name Vyankata.'
Verse 39 (garuda.2.74.39)
vya (ve) mindriyādikaṁ proktaṁ vyaṅgabhūtaṁ harau yataḥ kaṭaśca samudāyārtho vyaṁ (veṁ) kaṭaścendriyaughakaḥ
'"Vya" (or "ve") is said to denote the senses and the rest, since they are otherwise incomplete apart from Hari; and "kata" means an aggregate — thus "Vyankata" denotes the multitude of the senses.'
Verse 40 (garuda.2.74.40)
svasminprerayate yasmāttasmādvyaṅkaṭanāmakaḥ viṣaye preṣayennityamato vyaṅkaṭanāmakaḥ
'Since he directs the senses toward himself, he bears the name Vyankata; since he otherwise, through the senses, constantly directs beings toward sense-objects, this too gives the name Vyankata.'
Verse 41 (garuda.2.74.41)
viśiṣṭajñānarūpatvādvyeti muktāḥ sadā smṛtāḥ muktānāṁ ca samūhastu vyaṅkaṭeti prakīrtitaḥ
'On account of their possessing distinguished knowledge, the liberated are ever remembered by "vye"; and the assembly of the liberated is proclaimed by "vyankata."'
Verse 42 (garuda.2.74.42)
sadā muktasamūhānāmīśatvādvyaṅkaṭābhidhaḥ liṅgadehamato jīvo vyaṅkaṭeti samāhṛtaḥ
'On account of his lordship over the ever-liberated assembly, he bears the name Vyankata; hence the jiva, in its subtle body, is denoted by "vyankata."'
Verse 43 (garuda.2.74.43)
liṅgānāṁ caiva svāmitvādvyaṅkaṭeśeti saṁjñitaḥ daityānāṁ ca samūhāstu jñānādividhurā yataḥ ato daityasamūhastu vyaṅkaṭeti prakīrtitaḥ
'And on account of his lordship over these subtle bodies, he is named Vyankatesha. And since the assemblies of demons are devoid of knowledge and the rest, the assembly of demons too is proclaimed by "vyankata."'
Verse 44 (garuda.2.74.44)
teṣāṁ saṁharaṇe īśastvato vyaṅkaṭanāmakaḥ ānandasya viruddhatvātkāmakrodhādayo guṇāḥ
'Being their lord in the sense of their destruction, he thus bears the name Vyankata; and since desire, anger, and the other passions are contrary to bliss—'
Verse 45 (garuda.2.74.45)
vyaṅkaṭā iti saṁproktāsteṣāṁ nāśayitā prabhuḥ atastu vyaṅkaṭeśākhya evaṁ jñātvā japaṁ kuru
'—they too are declared by "vyankata"; the Lord is their destroyer, and hence he is named Vyankatesha. Understanding it thus, perform your japa.'
Verse 46 (garuda.2.74.46)
evaṁ vyaṅkaṭāmāhātmyaṁ śrutvā devī khageśvara nidrāṁ cakāra tatraiva rātrau pitrā sahaiva ca brāhme muhūrte cotthayi hṛdi sasmāra kanyakā
Having thus heard the glory of the name Vyankata, O lord of birds, the goddess slept there that night together with her father; rising at the Brahma-muhurta, the maiden remembered in her heart—
Verse 47 (garuda.2.74.47)
(vyaṅkaṭeśasya prātaḥ stutiḥ) śrīvyaṅkaṭeśaśca nṛsiṁhamūrtiḥ śrīvaradarājaśca varāhamūrtiḥ śrīraṅgaśāyī ca anantaśāyī kurvantu sarve mama suprabhātam
(The morning praise of Shri Venkatesha:) May Shri Venkatesha, and the Nrisimha form, and Shri Varadaraja, and the Varaha form, and he who reclines at Shrirangam, and he who reclines upon Ananta — may all of them grant me an auspicious dawn.
