The Instruction of the Yaksha
Verse 1 (markandeya.50.1)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca tato'bhidyāyatastasya jajñire mānasīḥ prajāḥ taccharīrasamutpannaiḥ kāryaistaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ saha
Markandeya said: Then, as he meditated, mind-born creatures were born to him, together with their causes and effects arising from that very body.
Verse 2 (markandeya.50.2)
kṣetrajñāḥ samavartanta gātrebyastasya dhīmataḥ te sarve samavartanta ye mayā pragudāhṛtāḥ
The individual souls (kshetrajnas) came into being from the limbs of that wise Brahma; all those whom I have already described came into being in this way.
Verse 3 (markandeya.50.3)
devādyāḥ sthāvarāntāśca traiguṇyaviṣayāḥ smṛtāḥ evaṁbhūtāni sṛṣṭāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca
From the gods down to the immobile, all these beings are remembered as subject to the three gunas; thus were created beings both unmoving and moving.
Verse 4 (markandeya.50.4)
yadāsya tāḥ prajāḥ sarvā na vyavardhanta dhīmataḥ athānyānmānasān putrānu sadṛśānātmano'sṛjat
When all these creatures of that wise Brahma did not multiply, he then created other mind-born sons resembling himself.
Verse 5 (markandeya.50.5)
bhṛguṁ pulastyaṁ pulahaṁ kratumaṅgirasantathā marīciṁ dakṣamatriñca vasiṣṭañcaiva mānasam
Bhrigu, Pulastya, Pulaha, and likewise Kratu and Angiras, Marichi, Daksha, Atri, and Vasishtha — these were his mind-born sons.
Verse 6 (markandeya.50.6)
nava brahmāṇa ityete purāṇe niścayaṅgatāḥ tato'sṛjat punarbrahmā rudraṁ krodhātmasambhavam
These nine are established in the Puranas as the 'nine Brahmas'; then Brahma created once more Rudra, born from his very wrath.
Verse 7 (markandeya.50.7)
saṅkalpañcaiva dharmañca pūrveṣāmapi pūrvajam sanandanādayo ye ca pūrvaṁ sṛṣṭāḥ svayaṁbhuvā
And also Sankalpa and Dharma, elder even to those born before them; and those such as Sanandana and the rest, whom the Self-born Brahma had already created earlier —
Verse 8 (markandeya.50.8)
— did not attach themselves to the worlds, remaining indifferent and inwardly composed; knowing what was yet to come, all were free from passion and free from envy.
Verse 9 (markandeya.50.9)
teṣvevaṁ nirapekṣeṣu lokasṛṣṭau mahātmanaḥ brahmaṇo'bhūnmahākrodhastatrotpanno'rkasannibhaḥ
When these sons remained thus indifferent to the creation of the worlds, a great wrath arose in the great-souled Brahma, and from it there arose a being resembling the sun.
Verse 10 (markandeya.50.10)
ardhanārīnaravapuḥ puruṣo'tiśarīravān vibhajātmānamityuktvā sa tadāntardadhe tataḥ
That being of vast form, half woman and half man in body — having said 'divide yourself', he then at once vanished from sight.
Verse 11 (markandeya.50.11)
sa cokto vai pṛthak strītvaṁ puruṣatvaṁ tathākarot bibheda puruṣatvañca daśadhā caikadhā tu saḥ
And that being, thus addressed, indeed made womanhood and manhood separate; and he divided the male portion into ten forms, and also into one.
Verse 12 (markandeya.50.12)
saumyāsaumyaistathā śāntaiḥ puṁstvaṁ strītvañca sa prabhuḥ bibheda bahudhā devaḥ puruṣairasitaiḥ sitaiḥ
That lord, that god, further divided manhood and womanhood in many ways — through gentle and fierce forms, through peaceful ones, and through beings dark and fair.
Verse 13 (markandeya.50.13)
tato brahmātmasambhūtaṁ pūrvaṁ svāyambhuvaṁ prabhuḥ ātmanaḥ sadṛśaṁ kṛtvā prajāpālo manuṁ dvija
Then, O brahmin, that lord and guardian of creatures, Brahma, made in his own likeness the one born of himself earlier — Svayambhuva — and established him as Manu.
Verse 14 (markandeya.50.14)
śatarūpāñca tāṁ nārīṁ taponirdhūtakalmaṣām svāyambhuvo manurdevaḥ patnītve jagṛhe vibhuḥ
And the divine Svayambhuva Manu took as his wife that woman named Shatarupa, whose impurities had been washed away by austerity.
Verse 15 (markandeya.50.15)
tasmācca puruṣāt putrau śatarūpā vyajāyata priyavratottānapādau prakhyātāvātmakarmabhiḥ
From that man, Shatarupa bore two sons, Priyavrata and Uttanapada, renowned for their own deeds.
Verse 16 (markandeya.50.16)
kanye dve ca tathā ṛddhiṁ prasūtiñca tataḥ pitā dadau prasūtiṁ dakṣāya tathā ṛddhiṁ ruceḥ purā
And two daughters as well, Akuti and Prasuti; their father then gave Prasuti to Daksha, and had earlier given Akuti to Ruchi.
Verse 17 (markandeya.50.17)
prajāpatiḥ sa jagrāha tayoryajñaḥ sadakṣiṇaḥ putro jajñe mahābhāga ! dampatīmithunaṁ tataḥ
That Prajapati Ruchi took her as his wife; from that union, together with the sacrifice and its Dakshina, O highly fortunate one, a paired son and daughter were born.
Verse 18 (markandeya.50.18)
yajñasya dakṣiṇāyāntu putrā dvādaśa jajñire yāmā iti samākhyātā devāḥ svāyambhuvo'ntare
To Yajna, by Dakshina, twelve sons were born, known as the Yamas — the gods of the Svayambhuva manvantara.
Verse 19 (markandeya.50.19)
tasya putrāstu yajñasya dakṣiṇāyāṁ sabhāsvarāḥ prasūtyāñca tathā dakṣaścatastro viṁśatistathā
These sons of Yajna, by Dakshina, are the radiant gods called 'Sabhasvara'. And upon Prasuti, Daksha begot twenty-four daughters.

Siddhi bore Sukha, and Kirti bore Yashas — these are the offspring born through Dharma. And from Kama was born Harsha, a grandson of Dharma, filled with the greatest joy.
Verse 29 (markandeya.50.29)

Himsa (Violence) was the wife of Adharma; from her were born Anrita (Falsehood) and a daughter, Nirriti; from Nirriti were born two sons, Naraka and Bhaya.
Verse 30 (markandeya.50.30)
māyā ca vedanā caiva mithunaṁ dvayametayoḥ tayorjajñe'tha vai māyā mṛtyuṁ bhūtāpahāriṇam
Maya and Vedana were the paired wives of these two; and of these, Maya bore Mrityu (Death), the taker-away of beings.
Verse 31 (markandeya.50.31)

duḥ khodbhavāḥ smṛtā hyete sarve vādharmalakṣaṇāḥ naiṣāṁ bhāryāsti putro vā sarve te hyūrdhvaretasaḥ
All these are remembered as born of sorrow, marked by unrighteousness; none of them has a wife or a son, for all of them are perpetually celibate.
Verse 33 (markandeya.50.33)
nirṛtiśca tathā cānyā mṛtyorbhāryābhavanmune alakṣmīrnāma tasyāñca mṛtyoḥ putrāścaturdaśa
And, O sage, another goddess, named Alakshmi, became the wife of Mrityu; and from her, Mrityu had fourteen sons.
Verse 34 (markandeya.50.34)
alakṣmīputrakā hyete mṛtyorādeśakāriṇaḥ vināśakāleṣu narān bhajantyete śṛṇuṣva tān
These sons of Alakshmi carry out Mrityu's command, and they descend upon men at the time of ruin — now hear of them.
Verse 35 (markandeya.50.35)
indriyeṣu daśasvete tathā manasi ca sthitāḥ sve sve naraṁ striyaṁ vāpi viṣaye yojayanti hi
They dwell in the ten senses, and likewise in the mind, engaging a man or a woman, each in his own particular domain.
Verse 36 (markandeya.50.36)
athendriyāṇi cākramya rāgakrodhādibhirnarān yojayanti yathā hāniṁ yāntyadharmādibhirdvija
Then, overpowering the senses, they engage men with passion, anger, and the rest, O brahmin, so that through unrighteousness and its like, they come to ruin.
Verse 37 (markandeya.50.37)
ahaṅkāragataścānyastathānyo buddhisaṁsthitaḥ vināśāya narāḥ strīṇāṁ yatante mahosaṁśritāḥ
One dwells in ego, another abides in the intellect; resorting to great delusion, they strive for the ruin of men and women.
Verse 38 (markandeya.50.38)
tathaivānyo gṛhe puṁsāṁ duḥ saho nāma viśrutaḥ kṣutkṣāmo'dhomukho nagraścīrī kākasamasvanaḥ
And likewise, in the houses of men, there is another well-known being called 'Duhsaha' — wasted with hunger, face cast down, naked, clothed in rags, his voice like a crow's.
Verse 39 (markandeya.50.39)
sa sarvān khādituṁ sṛṣṭo brahmaṇā tamaso nidhiḥ daṁṣṭrākarālamatyarthaṁ vivṛtāsyaṁ subhairavam
He, a very storehouse of tamas, was created by Brahma to devour all things, his fangs exceedingly fierce, his mouth gaping wide, altogether dreadful to behold.
Verse 40 (markandeya.50.40)
tamattukāmamāhedaṁ brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ sarvabrahmamayaḥ śuddhaḥ kāraṇaṁ jagato'vyayaḥ
To him, desiring to devour, Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds — himself made wholly of Brahman, pure, the imperishable cause of the universe — spoke thus:
Verse 41 (markandeya.50.41)
brahmovāca nāttavyante jagadidaṁ jahi kopaṁ śamaṁ vraja tyajaināntāmasī vṛttimapāsya rajasaḥ kalām
Brahma said: Do not devour this whole world! Give up your anger, go to peace; abandon this tamasic disposition, and take on instead a portion of rajas.
Verse 42 (markandeya.50.42)
duḥ saha uvāca kṣutkṣāmo'smi jagannātha ! pipāsuścāpi durbalaḥ kathaṁ tṛptimiyānnātha ! bhaveyaṁ balavān katham kaścāśrayo mamākyāhi varteyaṁ yatra nirvṛtaḥ
Duhsaha said: O Lord of the universe, I am wasted with hunger, thirsty and weak. O Lord, how shall I find satisfaction, how shall I become strong? Tell me what refuge is mine, where I may dwell content.
Verse 43 (markandeya.50.43)
brahmovāca tavāśrayo gṛhaṁ puṁsāṁ janaścādhārmiko balam puṣṭiṁ nityakriyāhānyā bhavān vatsa ! gamiṣyati
Brahma said: The household of men is your refuge, and unrighteous people are your strength; my child, you shall attain your nourishment through the neglect of daily duties.
Verse 44 (markandeya.50.44)
vṛthāsphoṭāśca te vastramāhārañca dadāmi te kṣataṁ kīṭāvapannañca tathā śvabiravekṣitam
Things wastefully torn and discarded, and food damaged and infested with worms, and food that a dog has looked upon — these I grant you as your clothing and your food.
Verse 45 (markandeya.50.45)
bhagnabhāṇāgatantadvanmukhavātopaśāmitam ucchiṣṭāpakvamāsvinnamavalīḍhamasaṁskṛtam
Food brought in a broken vessel, cooled by the breath of the mouth, leftover, half-cooked, sweated upon, tasted, and improperly consecrated —
Verse 46 (markandeya.50.46)
bhagnāsanasthitairbhuktamāsannāgatameva ca vidiṅmukhaṁ sandhyayośca nṛtyavādyasvanākulam
Food eaten seated on a broken seat, food eaten just as a guest arrives, food eaten facing the wrong direction, and food eaten at twilight amid the noise of dance and music —
Verse 47 (markandeya.50.47)
udakyopahataṁ bhuktamudakyā dṛṣṭameva ca yaccopaghātavat kiñcid bhakṣyaṁ peyamathāpi vā
Food touched or merely looked upon by a menstruating woman, and whatever food or drink has become defiled in any way —
Verse 48 (markandeya.50.48)
etāni tava puṣṭyarthamanyaccāpi dadāmi te aśraddhayā hutaṁ dattamasnātairyadavajñayā
These I give you for your nourishment, and more besides: oblations offered without faith, and gifts given without proper regard by those who have not bathed,
Verse 49 (markandeya.50.49)
yannāmbupūrvakaṁ kṣiptamanarthokṛtameva ca tyaktumāviṣkṛtaṁ yat tu dattaṁ caivātivismayāt
Whatever is thrown down without the water-offering, whatever is done uselessly or wrongly, whatever is given only for display, or given out of excessive astonishment,
Verse 50 (markandeya.50.50)
duṣṭaṁ kruddhārtadattañca yakṣa tadbhāgi tat phalam yacca paunarbhavaḥ kiñcit karotyāmuṣmikaṁ kramam
Whatever is corrupt, or given in anger or distress — O Yaksha, the fruit of all these is yours; and whatever a remarried woman's husband does regarding rites for the next world,
Verse 51 (markandeya.50.51)
yacca paunarbhavā yoṣit tadyakṣa ! tava tṛptaye kanyāśulkopadhānāya samupāste dhanakriyāḥ
and whatever a remarried woman does — O Yaksha, that too is for your satisfaction; and whatever wealth-dealings are made for the sake of a bride-price —
Verse 52 (markandeya.50.52)
tathaiva yakṣa ! puṣṭyarthamasacchāstrakriyāśca yāḥ yaccārthanirvṛtaṁ kiñcidadhītaṁ yanna satyataḥ
Likewise, O Yaksha, for your nourishment are the rites performed by false doctrines, and whatever is studied merely for the sake of wealth, not for truth —
Verse 53 (markandeya.50.53)
tata sarvaṁ tava kālāṁśca dadāmi tava siddhaye gurviṇyabhigame sandhyānityakāryavyatikrame
All this, together with certain times, I give you for your success — at the approach to a pregnant woman, at the neglect of the twilight and daily rites,
Verse 54 (markandeya.50.54)
