Verse 1 (markandeya.79.1)

मार्कण्डेय उवाच आदित्या वसवो रुद्राः साध्या विश्वे मरुद्गणाः । भृगवोऽङ्गिरसश्चाष्टौ यत्र देवगणाः स्मृताः ॥ 79.1 ॥

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ādityā vasavo rudrāḥ sādhyā viśve marudgaṇāḥ bhṛgavo 'ṅgirasaścāṣṭau yatra devagaṇāḥ smṛtāḥ

The Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, Sadhyas, Vishvedevas, the hosts of Maruts, the Bhrigus, and the eight Angirasas — these are remembered as the classes of gods of this manvantara.

Verse 2 (markandeya.79.2)

आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा विज्ञेयाः कश्यपात्मजाः । साध्याश्च मरुतो विश्वे धर्मपुत्रगणास्त्रयः ॥ 79.2 ॥

ādityā vasavo rudrā vijñeyāḥ kaśyapātmajāḥ sādhyāśca maruto viśve dharmaputragaṇāstrayaḥ

The Adityas, Vasus, and Rudras are to be known as the sons of Kashyapa; the Sadhyas, Maruts, and Vishvedevas are the three groups born as sons of Dharma.

Verse 3 (markandeya.79.3)

भृगोस्तु भृगवो देवाः पुत्रा ह्यङ्गिरसः सुताः । एष सर्गश्च मारीचो विज्ञेयः साम्प्रताधिपः ॥ 79.3 ॥

bhṛgostu bhṛgavo devāḥ putrā hyaṅgirasaḥ sutāḥ eṣa sargaśca mārīco vijñeyaḥ sāmpratādhipaḥ

The Bhrigu gods are the sons of Bhrigu, and the Angirasa gods are the sons of Angiras. This creation is to be known as descending from Marichi, the ruling order of the present age.

Verse 4 (markandeya.79.4)

ऊर्जस्वी नाम चैवेन्द्रो महात्मा यज्ञभागभुक् । अतीतानागता ये च वर्तन्ते साम्प्रतञ्च ये ॥ 79.4 ॥

ūrjasvī nāma caivendro mahātmā yajñabhāgabhuk atītānāgatā ye ca vartante sāmpratañca ye

The great-souled Indra of this age is named Urjasvin, receiver of the sacrificial share — as were those Indras of the past, those yet to come, and those existing now.

Verse 5 (markandeya.79.5)

सर्वे ते त्रिदशेन्द्रास्तु विज्ञेयास्तुल्यलक्षणाः । सहस्राक्षाः कुलिशिनः सर्व एव पुरन्दराः ॥ 79.5 ॥

sarve te tridaśendrāstu vijñeyāstulyalakṣaṇāḥ sahasrākṣāḥ kuliśinaḥ sarva eva purandarāḥ

All these Indras of the gods are to be known as identical in their attributes: thousand-eyed, wielders of the thunderbolt, every one of them a "Purandara."

Verse 6 (markandeya.79.6)

मघवन्तो वृषाः सर्वे शृङ्गिणो गजगामिनः । ते शतक्रतवः सर्वे भूताभिभवतेजसः ॥ 79.6 ॥

maghavanto vṛṣāḥ sarve śṛṅgiṇo gajagāminaḥ te śatakratavaḥ sarve bhūtābhibhavatejasaḥ

All are "Maghavan," bull-like, horned, moving like elephants; all are "Shatakratu," of a splendor that overpowers all beings.

Verse 7 (markandeya.79.7)

धर्माद्यैः कारणैः सुद्धैराधिपत्यगुणान्विताः । भूतभव्यभवन्नाथाः शृणु चैतत् त्रयं द्विज ॥ 79.7 ॥

dharmādyaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ suddhairādhipatyaguṇānvitāḥ bhūtabhavyabhavannāthāḥ śṛṇu caitat trayaṁ dvija

Endowed with sovereignty through pure causes such as dharma, they are lords of what has been, what will be, and what now is; hear, O brahmin, of these three worlds.

Verse 8 (markandeya.79.8)

भूर्लोकोऽयं स्मृता भूमिरन्तरिक्षं दिवः स्मृतम् । दिव्याख्याश्च तथा स्वर्गस्त्रैलोक्यमिति गद्यते ॥ 79.8 ॥

bhūrloko 'yaṁ smṛtā bhūmirantarikṣaṁ divaḥ smṛtam divyākhyāśca tathā svargastrailokyamiti gadyate

This earth is remembered as the world called Bhu; the space between is remembered as Antariksha, of the sky; and heaven, also called the celestial world — together these are spoken of as the three worlds.

Verse 9 (markandeya.79.9)

अत्रिश्चैव वसिष्ठश्च काश्यपश्च महानृषिः । गौतमश्च भरद्वाजौ विश्वामित्रोऽथ कौशिकः ॥ 79.9 ॥

atriścaiva vasiṣṭhaśca kāśyapaśca mahānṛṣiḥ gautamaśca bharadvājau viśvāmitro 'tha kauśikaḥ

Atri, and Vasishtha, and the great sage Kashyapa; Gautama, and Bharadvaja, and Vishvamitra, that is, Kaushika —

Verse 10 (markandeya.79.10)

तथैव पुत्रो भगवानृचीकस्य महात्मनः । जमदग्निस्तु सप्तैते मुनयोऽत्र नथान्तरे ॥ 79.10 ॥

tathaiva putro bhagavānṛcīkasya mahātmanaḥ jamadagnistu saptaite munayo 'tra nathāntare

and likewise the blessed son of the great-souled Richika, namely Jamadagni — these seven are the sages of this interval.

Verse 11 (markandeya.79.11)

इक्ष्वाकुर्नाभगश्चैव धृष्टः शर्यातिरेव च । नरिष्यन्तश्च विख्यातो नाभागारिष्ट एव च ॥ 79.11 ॥

ikṣvākurnābhagaścaiva dhṛṣṭaḥ śaryātireva ca nariṣyantaśca vikhyāto nābhāgāriṣṭa eva ca

Ikshvaku, and Nabhaga, Dhrishta, and Sharyati, and the renowned Narishyanta, and Nabhaga-Arishta,

Verse 12 (markandeya.79.12)

करूषश्च पृषध्रश्च वसुमान् लोकविश्रुतः । मनोर्वैवस्वतस्यैते नव पुत्राः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥ 79.12 ॥

karūṣaśca pṛṣadhraśca vasumān lokaviśrutaḥ manorvaivasvatasyaite nava putrāḥ prakīrtitāḥ

and Karusha, and Prishadhra, and Vasuman, renowned throughout the world — these nine are proclaimed as the sons of Vaivasvata Manu.

Verse 13 (markandeya.79.13)

वैवस्वतमिदं ब्रह्मन् ! कथितन्ते मयान्तरम् । अस्मिन् श्रुते नरः सद्यः पठिते चैव सत्तम । मुच्यते पातकैः सर्वैः पुण्यञ्च महदश्नते ॥ 79.13 ॥

vaivasvatamidaṁ brahman ! kathitante mayāntaram asmin śrute naraḥ sadyaḥ paṭhite caiva sattama mucyate pātakaiḥ sarvaiḥ puṇyañca mahadaśnate

O brahmin, I have thus told you of this Vaivasvata interval. Hearing it, or reciting it, O most excellent one, a man is instantly freed from all sins and attains great merit.
