The Future Manvantaras Foretold

Verse 1 (markandeya.80.1)

क्रौष्टुकिरुवाच स्वायम्भुवाद्याः कथिताः सप्तैते मनवो मम । तदन्तरेषु ये देवा राजानो मुनयस्तथा ॥ 80.1 ॥

krauṣṭukiruvāca svāyambhuvādyāḥ kathitāḥ saptaite manavo mama tadantareṣu ye devā rājāno munayastathā

Kraushtuki said: "You have told me of these seven Manus, beginning with Svayambhuva, and of the gods, kings, and sages within their intervals."

Verse 2 (markandeya.80.2)

अस्मिन् कल्पे सप्त येऽन्ये भविष्यन्ति महामुने । मनवस्तान् समाचक्ष्व ये च देवादयश्च ये ॥ 80.2 ॥

asmin kalpe sapta ye 'nye bhaviṣyanti mahāmune manavastān samācakṣva ye ca devādayaśca ye

"Now, O great sage, tell me of the seven other Manus who are yet to come in this same kalpa, and of the gods and others of their times."

Verse 3 (markandeya.80.3)

मार्कण्डेय उवाच कथितस्तव सावर्णिश्छायासंज्ञासुतश्च यः । पूर्वजस्य मनोस्तुल्यः स मनुर्भविताष्टमः ॥ 80.3 ॥

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca kathitastava sāvarṇiśchāyāsaṁjñāsutaśca yaḥ pūrvajasya manostulyaḥ sa manurbhavitāṣṭamaḥ

Markandeya said: "I have already told you of Savarni, the son of Chhaya-Sanjna, equal in stature to the elder Manu — he shall be the eighth Manu."

Verse 4 (markandeya.80.4)

रामो व्यासो गालवश्च दीप्तिमान् कृप एव च । ऋष्यशृङ्गस्तथा द्रोणस्तत्र सप्तर्षयोऽभवन् ॥ 80.4 ॥

rāmo vyāso gālavaśca dīptimān kṛpa eva ca ṛṣyaśṛṅgastathā droṇastatra saptarṣayo 'bhavan

"Rama, Vyasa, Galava, Diptiman, and Kripa, and Rishyashringa, and Drona — these shall be the seven sages of that age."

Verse 5 (markandeya.80.5)

सुतपाश्चामिताभाश्च मुख्याश्चैव त्रिधा सुराः । विंशकः कथिताश्चैषां त्रयाणां त्रिगुणो गणः ॥ 80.5 ॥

sutapāścāmitābhāśca mukhyāścaiva tridhā surāḥ viṁśakaḥ kathitāścaiṣāṁ trayāṇāṁ triguṇo gaṇaḥ

"The gods shall be threefold: the Sutapas, the Amitabhas, and the Mukhyas — each of these three groups is said to number twenty, sixty gods in all."

Verse 6 (markandeya.80.6)

तपस्तप्तश्च शक्रश्च द्युतिर्ज्योतिः प्रभाकरः । प्रभासो दयितो धर्मस्तेजोरश्मिश्चिरक्रतुः ॥ 80.6 ॥

tapastaptaśca śakraśca dyutirjyotiḥ prabhākaraḥ prabhāso dayito dharmastejoraśmiścirakratuḥ

"Tapastapta, Shakra, Dyuti, Jyotis, Prabhakara, Prabhasa, Dayita, Dharma, Tejorashmi, Chirakratu —"

Verse 7 (markandeya.80.7)

इत्यादिकस्तु सुतपा देवानां विंशको गणः । प्रभुर्विभुर्विभासाद्यस्तथान्यो विंशको गणः ॥ 80.7 ॥

ityādikastu sutapā devānāṁ viṁśako gaṇaḥ prabhurvibhurvibhāsādyastathānyo viṁśako gaṇaḥ

"these and others form the group of twenty gods called the Sutapas. Prabhu, Vibhu, Vibhasa, and others form another group of twenty."

Verse 8 (markandeya.80.8)

सुराणाममिताभानां तृतीयमपि मे शृणु । दमो दान्तो ऋतः सोमो वित्ताद्याश्चैव विंशतिः ॥ 80.8 ॥

surāṇāmamitābhānāṁ tṛtīyamapi me śṛṇu damo dānto ṛtaḥ somo vittādyāścaiva viṁśatiḥ

"Hear from me also of the third group, the twenty gods called Amitabha: Dama, Danta, Rita, Soma, Vitta, and the others."

Verse 9 (markandeya.80.9)

मुख्या ह्येते समाख्याता देवा मन्वन्तराधिपाः । मारीचस्यैव ते पुत्राः कश्यपस्य प्रजापतेः ॥ 80.9 ॥

mukhyā hyete samākhyātā devā manvantarādhipāḥ mārīcasyaiva te putrāḥ kaśyapasya prajāpateḥ

"These, indeed, are declared to be the chief gods, the lords of that manvantara; they are the sons of Kashyapa Prajapati, of the line of Marichi."

Verse 10 (markandeya.80.10)

भविष्याश्च भविष्यन्ति सावर्णस्यान्तरे मनोः । तेषामिन्द्रो भविष्यस्तु बलिर्वैरोचनिर्मुने ॥ 80.10 ॥

bhaviṣyāśca bhaviṣyanti sāvarṇasyāntare manoḥ teṣāmindro bhaviṣyastu balirvairocanirmune

"These are the gods yet to come who shall arise in the interval of Savarni Manu; and their Indra, O sage, shall be Bali, son of Virochana."

Verse 11 (markandeya.80.11)

पाताल आस्ते योऽद्यापि दैत्यः समयबन्धनः । विरजाश्चार्ववीरश्च निर्मोहः सत्यवाक् कृतिः । विष्ण्वाद्याश्चैव तनयाः सावर्णस्य मनोर्नृपाः ॥ 80.11 ॥

pātāla āste yo 'dyāpi daityaḥ samayabandhanaḥ virajāścārvavīraśca nirmohaḥ satyavāk kṛtiḥ viṣṇvādyāścaiva tanayāḥ sāvarṇasya manornṛpāḥ

"That Daitya who even now dwells in Patala, bound by a pact. Viraja, Arvavira, Nirmoha, Satyavak, Kriti, Vishnu, and others shall be the royal sons of Savarni Manu."
