eṣu śrāddhapradātāraḥ prayāṁti paramaṁ padam tīrthaṁ mātṛgṛhaṁ nāma karavīrapuraṁ tathā
those who give Shraddha at these attain the supreme abode. The sacred site named Matrigriha, and likewise Karavirapura,
Verse 63 (padma.1.11.63)
saptagodāvarīnāma sarvatīrtheśvareśvaram tatra śrāddhaṁ pradātavyamanaṁtaphalamīpsubhiḥ

Verse 64 (padma.1.11.64)
kīkaṭeṣu gayā puṇyā puṇyaṁ rājagṛhaṁ vanam cyavanasyāśramaṁ puṇyaṁ nadī puṇyā punaḥpunā
In Kikata, sacred Gaya; the sacred forest of Rajagriha; the sacred hermitage of Chyavana; the sacred river Punahpuna,
Verse 65 (padma.1.11.65)
viṣayārādhanaṁ puṇyaṁ nadī yā tu punaḥpunā yatra gāthā vicarati brahmaṇā parikīrtitā
and the sacred site of Vishayaradhana, and the river which is Punahpuna — where a verse, proclaimed by Brahma, circulates:
Verse 66 (padma.1.11.66)
eṣṭavyā bahavaḥ putrā yadyekopi gayāṁ vrajet yajeta vāśvamedhena nīlaṁ vā vṛṣamutsṛjet
'Many sons are to be desired, in the hope that even one of them might go to Gaya, or perform an Ashvamedha sacrifice, or release a blue bull.'
Verse 67 (padma.1.11.67)
eṣā gāthā vicarati tīrtheṣvāyataneṣu ca sarve manuṣyā rājeṁdra kīrttayaṁtaḥ samāgatāḥ
This verse circulates among the sacred sites and temples; all people, O lord of kings, gathering, recite it, saying:
Verse 68 (padma.1.11.68)
kimasmākaṁ kule kaścidgayāṁ yāsyati yaḥ sutaḥ prīṇayiṣyati tāngatvā saptapūrvāṁstathāparān
'Is there any son in our family who will go to Gaya, and, going there, will satisfy the seven generations of forefathers and others besides,'
Verse 69 (padma.1.11.69)
mātāmahānāmapyevaṁ śrutireṣā ciraṁtanī gaṁgāyāmasthinicayaṁ gatvā kṣepsyati yaḥ sutaḥ
'and likewise the maternal ancestors?' — this teaching is ancient. That son who goes to the Ganga and casts the collected bones there,
Verse 70 (padma.1.11.70)
tilaiḥ saptāṣṭabhirvāpi dāsyate ca jalāṁjalim araṇyatritaye vāpi piṁḍadānaṁ kariṣyati
or offers a handful of water with seven or eight sesame seeds, or performs the offering of Pindas at the three sacred forests —
Verse 71 (padma.1.11.71)
prathamaṁ puṣkarāraṇye naimiṣe tadanaṁtaraṁ dharmāraṇyaṁ punaḥ prāpya śrāddhaṁ bhaktyā pradāsyati
first at the Pushkara forest, then at Naimisha thereafter, and having reached the Dharma forest again, will offer Shraddha with devotion,
Verse 72 (padma.1.11.72)
gayāyāṁ dharmapṛṣṭhe vā sarasi brahmaṇastathā gayāśīrṣavaṭe caiva pitṝṇāṁ dattamakṣayam
at Gaya, or at Dharmaprishtha, or at Brahma's lake, and at the banyan of Gayashirsha — whatever is given to the Pitris there becomes imperishable.
Verse 73 (padma.1.11.73)
vrajankṛtvā nivāpaṁ yastvadhvānaṁ parisarpati narakasthānpitṝnsopi svargaṁ nayati satvaraṁ
Whoever, having made the offering, then journeys further on that path — he too swiftly leads even those Pitris dwelling in hell up to heaven.
Verse 74 (padma.1.11.74)
kule tasya na rājeṁdra preto bhavati kaścana pretatvaṁ mokṣabhāvaṁ ca piṁḍadānācca gacchati
In his family, O lord of kings, no one becomes a wandering ghost; through the giving of the Pinda, one passes from the state of a Preta to the state of liberation.
Verse 75 (padma.1.11.75)
eko munistāmrakarāgrahasto hyāmreṣu mūle salilaṁ dadāti āmrāśca siktāḥ pitaraśca tṛptā ekā kriyā dvyarthakarī prasiddhā
A single sage, his hand holding a copper vessel, gives water at the root of mango trees; the mango trees are watered and the Pitris are satisfied — a single act renowned as achieving a double purpose.
Verse 76 (padma.1.11.76)
gayāyāṁ piṇḍadānasya nānyaddānaṁ viśiṣyate ekena piṁḍadānena tṛptāste mokṣagāminaḥ
No other gift is superior to the giving of the Pinda at Gaya; by a single offering of the Pinda, those ancestors become satisfied and go to liberation.
Verse 77 (padma.1.11.77)
dhānyapradānaṁ pravaraṁ vadaṁti vasupradānaṁ ca tathāmunīṁdrāḥ gayā sutīrtheṣu naraiḥ pradattaṁ taddharmahetuṁ pravaraṁ vadaṁti
The great sages declare the gift of grain, and likewise the gift of wealth, to be excellent; but that which is given by men at the sacred fords of Gaya, they declare to be the most excellent cause of dharma.
Verse 78 (padma.1.11.78)
sarvātmanā surucinā mahācala mahānadī ye tu paśyaṁti tāṁ gatvā mānase dakṣiṇottare
Those who, with their whole soul and with delight, go and behold that great mountain and great river, at Manasa in the south and the north,
Verse 79 (padma.1.11.79)
praṇamya dvijamukhyebhyaḥ prāptaṁ tairjanmanaḥ phalaṁ yadyadicchati vai martyastattadāpnotyasaṁśayam
and, having bowed to the foremost brahmins, obtain by them the fruit of their whole birth. Whatever a mortal desires, that indeed he obtains, without doubt.
Verse 80 (padma.1.11.80)
eṣa tūddeśataḥ proktastīrthānāṁ sagraho mayā vāgīśopi na śaknoti vistarātkimu mānuṣaḥ
This has been declared by me only in brief summary of the sacred sites; even the lord of speech is unable to tell them in full, how much less a mere human!
Verse 81 (padma.1.11.81)
satyaṁ tīrthaṁ dayā tīrthaṁ tīrthamindriyanigrahaḥ varṇāśramāṇāṁ gehepi tīrthaṁ śama udāhṛtam
Truth is a sacred site, compassion is a sacred site, control of the senses is a sacred site; even in the household of the classes and stages of life, tranquility is declared to be a sacred site.
Verse 82 (padma.1.11.82)
yeṣu tīrtheṣu yacchrāddhaṁ tatkoṭiguṇamiṣyate gayāyāṁ yattu vai śrāddhaṁ tacchrāddhamapavargadam
Whatever Shraddha is performed at these sacred sites is held to be crore-fold in merit; but the Shraddha performed at Gaya is that Shraddha which grants final liberation.
Verse 83 (padma.1.11.83)
yasmāttasmātprayatnena tīrthe śrāddhaṁ vidhīyate prātaḥkālo muhūrtāṁstrīnsaṁgavastāvadeva tu
For this reason, Shraddha should diligently be performed at a sacred site. The morning period lasts three Muhurtas, and the Sangava period likewise the same,
Verse 84 (padma.1.11.84)
madhyāhnastrimuhūrtaḥ syādaparāhṇastataḥ param sāyāhnastrimuhūrtaḥ syācchrāddhaṁ tatra na kārayet
midday consists of three Muhurtas, and afternoon comes after that; evening consists of three Muhurtas — Shraddha should not be performed in that period.
Verse 85 (padma.1.11.85)
rākṣasī nāma sā velā garhitā sarvakarmasu ahno muhūrtā vyākhyātā daśapaṁca ca sarvadā
That time is called the Rakshasa hour, condemned for all rites. The Muhurtas of the day are always explained to number fifteen.
Verse 86 (padma.1.11.86)
tatrāṣṭamo muhūrto yaḥ sa kālaḥ kutapaḥ smṛtaḥ madhyāhnātsarvadā yasmānmaṁdī bhavati bhāskaraḥ
Among these, the eighth Muhurta is the time remembered as Kutapa, since it is always after midday, when the sun's heat becomes gentle.
Verse 87 (padma.1.11.87)
tasmādanaṁtaphaladastatrāraṁbho viśiṣyate khaḍgapātraṁ ca kutapastathā naipālakaṁbalam
Therefore, beginning a Shraddha at that time is distinguished as granting infinite fruit. A vessel of rhinoceros-horn, the Kutapa hour, and likewise a Nepalese blanket,
Verse 88 (padma.1.11.88)
rukmaṁ darbhāstilā gāvo dauhitraścāṣṭamaḥ smṛtaḥ pāpaṁ kutsitamityāhustasya tattāpakāriṇaḥ
gold, kusha grass, sesame, cows, and a daughter's son — this eighth is remembered. Whoever considers these contemptible is deemed sinful, since these burn away sin,
Verse 89 (padma.1.11.89)
aṣṭāvete yatastasmātkutapā iti viśrutāḥ ūrdhvaṁ muhurttātkutapānmahūrttaṁ ca catuṣṭayam
since these are eight, they are therefore renowned as the Kutapas. Above the Kutapa Muhurta, for four more Muhurtas,
Verse 90 (padma.1.11.90)
muhūrttapaṁcakaṁ caiva svadhāvācanamiṣyate viṣṇudehasamudbhūtāḥ kuśāḥ kṛṣṇatilāstathā
and for a full five Muhurtas, the recitation of Svadha is recommended. Kusha grass, born from the body of Vishnu, and black sesame,
Verse 91 (padma.1.11.91)
śrāddhasya lakṣaṇaṁ kālamiti prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ tilodakāṁjalirdeyo jalāṁte tīrthavāsibhiḥ
and this time — these, the wise declare, are the defining marks of a Shraddha. Those dwelling at sacred sites should give a handful of sesame-water at the end of bathing,
Verse 92 (padma.1.11.92)
sadarbhahastenaikena gṛhe śrāddhaṁ gamiṣyati puṇyaṁ pavitramāyuṣyaṁ sarvapāpavināśanam
with kusha grass held in one hand — then that merit will reach even to the Shraddha performed at home. It is meritorious, purifying, life-giving, and destructive of all sin.
Verse 93 (padma.1.11.93)
brahmaṇā caiva kathitaṁ tīrthaśrāddhānukīrtanam śṛṇoti yaḥ paṭhedvāpi śrīmānsaṁjāyate naraḥ
This recitation of Tirtha-Shraddha, declared by Brahma himself — whoever hears it, or even reads it, that man becomes prosperous.
Verse 94 (padma.1.11.94)
śrāddhakāle ca vaktavyaṁ tathā tīrthanivāsibhiḥ sarvapāpopaśāṁntyarthamalakṣmīnāśanaṁ mataṁ
And it should be recited at the time of Shraddha, likewise by those dwelling at sacred sites, for the pacification of all sin; it is held to be the destroyer of misfortune.
Verse 95 (padma.1.11.95)
idaṁ pavitraṁ yaśaso nidhānamidaṁ mahāpātakanāśanaṁ ca brahmārkarudrairabhipūjitaṁ ca śrāddhasya māhātmyamuśaṁti tajjñāḥ
This is purifying, a treasury of fame; this destroys great sins; and, honored by Brahma, the Sun, and Rudra — this is the greatness of Shraddha, so declare those who know it.
