Srishti Khanda · Chapter 12
The Lunar Dynasty: From Soma to Kartavirya Arjuna
Verse 1 (padma.1.12.1)
bhīṣma uvāca somavaṁśaḥ kathaṁ jātaḥ kathayātra viśārada tadvaṁśe keturājāno babhūvuḥ kīrtivarddhanāḥ
Bhishma said: How did the lunar dynasty arise? Tell me this, O learned one. And what illustrious kings, increasers of glory, arose in that lineage?
Verse 2 (padma.1.12.2)
pulastya uvāca ādiṣṭo brahmaṇā pūrvamatriḥ sargavidhau purā anaṁtaraṁ nāma tapaḥ sṛṣṭyarthaṁ taptavānvibhuḥ
Pulastya said: Instructed by Brahma formerly, in the work of creation of old, Atri performed the austerity named 'Anantara' for the sake of creation.
Verse 3 (padma.1.12.3)
yadānaṁdakaraṁ brahma bhagavankleśanāśanaṁ brahmarudrendrasūryāṇāmabhyaṁtaramatīṁdriyaṁ
Meditating on that joy-giving Brahman, destroyer of afflictions, the transcendent inner essence of Brahma, Rudra, Indra, and the Sun,
Verse 4 (padma.1.12.4)
śāntiṁ kṛtvātmamanasā tadatriḥ saṁyame sthitaḥ māhātmyaṁ tapaso vāpi paramānaṁdakārakaṁ
having brought peace to his own mind, that Atri remained in perfect self-restraint; the greatness of that austerity, too, was the cause of supreme bliss.
Verse 5 (padma.1.12.5)
yasmādvaṁśapatiḥ sārddhaṁ samaye tadadhiṣṭhitaḥ taṁ dṛṣṭvācaṣṭa somena tasmātsomobhavadvibhuḥ
Since the lord of the progeny to be born was thus established in that state, seeing him, he was called Soma; therefore he, the mighty one, became Soma.
Verse 6 (padma.1.12.6)
atha susrāva netrābhyāṁ jalaṁ tatrātrisaṁbhavam dyotayadviśvamakhilaṁ jyotsnayā sacarācaram
Then water, born of Atri, flowed forth from his eyes there, illuminating the entire universe, moving and unmoving, with its moonlight.
Verse 7 (padma.1.12.7)
taddiśo jagṛhustatra strīrūpeṇāsahṛcchayāḥ garbho bhūtvodare tāsāṁ sthitaḥ sopyatrisaṁbhavaḥ
The directions, there in feminine form, unable to bear it, seized it; and, becoming an embryo, that offspring of Atri came to rest in their wombs.
Verse 8 (padma.1.12.8)
āśāśca mumucurgarbhamaśaktā dhāraṇe tataḥ samādāyātha taṁ garbhamekīkṛtya caturmukhaḥ
But the directions, unable to sustain the embryo, released it. Then the four-faced Brahma, taking up that embryo and uniting it into one,
Verse 9 (padma.1.12.9)
yuvānamakarodbrahmā sarvāyudhadharaṁ naram syaṁdanetha sahastena vedaśaktimaye prabhuḥ
made it into a youth, a man bearing every weapon. And the lord, with his own hand, set him upon a chariot made of the very power of the Vedas,
Verse 10 (padma.1.12.10)
and, having mounted him upon it, the Grandsire led him to his own world. Then it was declared by the Brahmarshis: 'Become our lord.'
Verse 11 (padma.1.12.11)
ṛṣibhirdevagaṁdharvairapsarobhistathaiva ca stūyamānasya tasyābhūdadhikaṁ mahadaṁtaram
Praised by the sages, gods, Gandharvas, and Apsarases likewise, a great and abundant splendor arose in him,
Verse 12 (padma.1.12.12)
tejovitānādabhavadbhuvi divyauṣadhīgaṇaḥ taddīptiradhikā tasmādrātrau bhavati sarvadā
and from the diffusion of that splendor arose upon the earth the host of divine herbs; and it is for that reason that its brilliance is always greater at night.
Verse 13 (padma.1.12.13)
tenauṣadhīśaḥ somobhūddvijeṣvapi hi gaṇyate vedadhāmā rasaścāyaṁ yadidaṁ maṁḍalaṁ śubham
By this he became Soma, lord of herbs, and is indeed reckoned among the twice-born; this auspicious orb is the very abode of the Vedas, and the essence of all.
Verse 14 (padma.1.12.14)
kṣīyate varddhate caiva śukle kṛṣṇe ca sarvadā viṁśatiṁ ca tathā sapta dakṣaḥ prācetaso dadau
It always wanes and waxes in the bright and dark fortnights. Daksha, son of Prachetas, gave twenty-seven,
Verse 15 (padma.1.12.15)
rūpalāvaṇyasaṁyuktāstasmai kanyāḥ suvarcasaḥ tataḥ śaktisahasrāṇāṁ sahasrāṇi daśaiva tu
radiant maidens, endowed with beauty and loveliness, to him. Then, for ten thousand thousands of years,
Verse 16 (padma.1.12.16)
tapaścakāra śītāṁśurviṣṇudhyānaikatatparaḥ tatastuṣṭaśca bhagavāṁstasmai nārāyaṇo hariḥ
the cool-rayed one performed austerity, wholly devoted to meditation on Vishnu. Then the illustrious Narayana Hari, pleased, said to him:
Verse 17 (padma.1.12.17)
varaṁ vṛṇīṣva covāca paramātmā janārdanaḥ tato vavre varaṁ somaḥ śakraloke yajāmyaham
'Choose a boon,' spoke that Supreme Self, Janardana. Then Soma chose this boon: 'May I perform sacrifice in the world of Shakra;'
Verse 18 (padma.1.12.18)
pratyakṣameva bhoktāro bhavaṁtu mama maṁdire rājasūye suragaṇā brahmādyā ye caturvidhāḥ
'and may the hosts of gods, headed by Brahma, of the fourfold order, be the visible partakers of the offerings in my abode, at my Rajasuya sacrifice.'
Verse 19 (padma.1.12.19)
rakṣapālaḥ surosmākamāstāṁ śūladharo haraḥ tathetyuktaḥ samājahre rājasūyaṁ tu viṣṇunā
'And let the trident-bearing Hara be the protecting guardian for us.' 'So be it,' and, with the consent of Vishnu, he undertook the Rajasuya sacrifice.
Verse 20 (padma.1.12.20)
hotātrirbhṛguradhvaryurudgātā ca caturmukhaḥ brahmatvamagamattasya upadraṣṭā hariḥ svayam
Atri was the Hotri, Bhrigu the Adhvaryu, and the four-faced Brahma the Udgatri; and the office of the Brahma-priest was taken by Hari himself as overseer.
Verse 21 (padma.1.12.21)
sadasyāḥ sarvadevāstu rājasūyavidhiḥ smṛtaḥ vasavodhvaryavastadvadviśvedevāstathaiva ca
All the gods were the assembly of sacrificial witnesses; thus is the rite of the Rajasuya remembered. The Vasus were likewise assistant priests, and the Vishvedevas likewise,
Verse 22 (padma.1.12.22)
trailokyaṁ dakṣiṇā tena ṛtvigbhyaḥ pratipāditā somaḥ prāpyāthaduṣprāpyamaiśvaryaṁ sṛṣṭisatkṛtaṁ
and the three worlds were given by him as the sacrificial fee to the priests. Soma, having thus obtained sovereignty, hard to attain, honored throughout creation,
Verse 23 (padma.1.12.23)
saptalokaikanāthatvaṁ prāptassvatapasā tadā kadācidudyānagatāmapaśyadanekapuṣpābharaṇopaśobhām
attained then, by his own austerity, sole lordship over the seven worlds. Once, having gone to a garden, he saw Tara, resplendent with many flower-ornaments,
Verse 24 (padma.1.12.24)
bṛhannitaṁbastanabhārakhedāṁ puṣpāvabhaṁgepyatidurbalāṁgīṁ bhāryāṁ ca tāṁ devaguroranaṁgabāṇābhirāmāyata cārunetrāṁ
wearied by the weight of her ample hips and breasts, of a form so delicate that even the gathering of flowers exhausted her — the wife of the preceptor of the gods, of lovely eyes, wounded by the arrows of the bodiless god.
Verse 25 (padma.1.12.25)
That lord of the stars, tormented by love, seized Tara by her hair on that secluded ground; she too, tormented by love, could not resist, and, her mind carried away by his beauty, delighted in him.
Verse 26 (padma.1.12.26)
ciraṁ vihṛtyātha jagāma tārāṁ vidhurgṛhītvā svagṛhaṁ tatopi na tṛptirāsītsvagṛhepi tasya tārānuraktasya sukhāgameṣu
Having sported with her for a long while, the moon then took Tara and went to his own home; even there, he found no satiety in the pleasures that came to him, so attached was he to Tara.
Verse 27 (padma.1.12.27)
bṛhaspatistadvirahāgnidagdhastaddhyānaniṣṭhaikamanā babhūva śaśāka śāpaṁ na ca dātumasmai na maṁtraśastrāgniviṣairanekaiḥ
Brihaspati, burned by the fire of separation from her, became of one mind, fixed wholly in meditation upon her. Yet he was unable to give him a curse, nor could he, with numerous mantras, weapons, fire or poison,
Verse 28 (padma.1.12.28)
tasyāpakartuṁ vividhairupāyairnaivābhicārairapi vāgadhīśaḥ sa yācayāmāsa tatastu devaṁ somaṁ svabhāryārthamanaṁgataptaḥ
harm him by various means, not even by black magic, that lord of speech. Then, tormented by desire, he entreated the god Soma for the sake of his own wife.
Verse 29 (padma.1.12.29)
But he, even when entreated, deluded by the power of desire, did not give back Brihaspati's wife. Then he was entreated by the great Lord, by the four-faced Brahma, by the Sadhyas, the Maruts, together with the guardians of the world,
Verse 30 (padma.1.12.30)
dadau yadā tāṁ na kathaṁcidiṁdustadā śivaḥ krodhaparo babhūva yo vāmadevaprathitaḥ pṛthivyāmanekarudrārcitapādapadmaḥ
but when the moon still would not give her back by any means, then Shiva became overcome with anger — he who is renowned on earth as Vamadeva, whose lotus feet are worshipped by the many forms of Rudra.
Verse 31 (padma.1.12.31)
tataḥ saśiṣyo giriśaḥ pinākī bṛhaspateḥ snehavaśānubaddhaḥ dhanurgṛhītvājagavaṁ purārirjagāma bhūteśvarasiddhajuṣṭaḥ
Then the mountain-dwelling, Pinaka-wielding Shiva, attached out of love for Brihaspati, together with his disciple, taking up his bow named Ajagava, the destroyer of Tripura, set forth, accompanied by the lords of the Bhutas and the Siddhas,
Verse 32 (padma.1.12.32)
yuddhāya somena viśeṣadīptastṛtīyanetrānalabhīmavaktraḥ sahaiva jagmuśca gaṇeśvarāṇāṁ viṁśādhikā ṣaṣṭirathogramūrtiḥ
for battle against Soma, especially resplendent, his face terrible with the fire of his third eye. And along with him went eighty terrible-formed lords of the Ganas,
Verse 33 (padma.1.12.33)
yakṣeśvarāṇāṁ sagaṇairanekairyutonvagātsyaṁdanasaṁsthitānāṁ vetālayakṣoragakinnarāṇāṁ padmena caikena tathārbudānām
accompanied by many hosts of lords of the Yakshas, mounted upon chariots — an immense number of Vetalas, Yakshas, serpents and Kinnaras, and many hundred-millions,
Verse 34 (padma.1.12.34)
lakṣaistribhirdvā daśabhī rathānāṁ somopyagāttatra vivṛddhamanyuḥ śanaiścarāṁgārakavṛddhatejā nakṣatradaityāsurasainyayuktaḥ
and with three hundred thousand and twelve chariots. Soma too, his fury greatly increased, went there, his splendor augmented by Saturn and Mars, joined by armies of the lunar mansions, Daityas and Asuras.
Verse 35 (padma.1.12.35)
jagmurbhayaṁ sapta tathaiva lokā dharāvanadvīpasamudragarbhāḥ sasomamevābhyagamatpinākī gṛhītadīptāstraviśālavahniḥ
All the seven worlds fell into fear, along with the earth, forests, continents, oceans and their depths. The Pinaka-wielder, having taken up his blazing, vast fiery weapon, advanced upon Soma.
Verse 36 (padma.1.12.36)
athābhavadbhīṣaṇa bhīma soma sainyadvayasyātha mahāhavosau aśeṣasatvakṣayakṛtpravṛddhastīkṣṇapradhāno jvalanaikarūpaḥ
Then arose a terrifying, dreadful, great battle between the two armies of Shiva and Soma, causing the destruction of all living beings, ever intensifying, dominated by sharp weapons, taking the very form of fire.
Verse 37 (padma.1.12.37)
śastrairathānyonyamaśeṣasainyaṁ dvayorjagāmakṣayamugratīkṣṇaiḥ pataṁti śastrāṇi tathojvalāni svarbhūmipātālamalaṁ dahaṁti
With sharp and terrible weapons, they destroyed each other's entire armies without remainder; blazing weapons fell, burning heaven, earth, and the netherworld intensely.
Verse 38 (padma.1.12.38)
rudraḥ krodhādbrahmaśiro mumoca somopi somāstramamoghavīryaṁ tayornipātena samudrabhūmyorathāṁtarikṣasya ca bhītirāsīt
Rudra, in anger, released the Brahmashira weapon; Soma too released the Soma-astra, of unfailing potency. By the falling of these two, the ocean, the earth, and the sky were struck with terror.
Verse 39 (padma.1.12.39)
tadā suyuddhaṁ jagatāṁ kṣayāya pravṛddhamālokya pitāmahopi tataḥ praviśyātha kathaṁcideva nivārayāmāsa suraiḥ sahaiva
Then, seeing that great battle grown to the point of destroying the worlds, the Grandsire too, entering somehow into the fray, restrained it, together with the gods.
Verse 40 (padma.1.12.40)
akāraṇaṁ kiṁ kṣayakṛjjanānāṁ soma tvayāpīdamakāryakāryaṁ yasmātparastrīharaṇāya soma tvayā kṛtaṁ yuddhamatīva bhīmam
'Why is this destruction of people, without cause? This is indeed, O Soma, an improper act done by you — for you have waged this exceedingly terrible war for the sake of abducting another's wife.'
Verse 41 (padma.1.12.41)
pāpagrahastvaṁ bhavitā janeṣu pāposyalaṁ vahnimukhāśināṁ tvaṁ bhāryāmimāmarpaya vākpatestvaṁ pramāṇayanneva madīya vācam
'You shall become an inauspicious planet among people; you are indeed sinful, though you are the sustenance of those who partake through fire's mouth. Give back this wife of the lord of speech, honoring my word.'
Verse 42 (padma.1.12.42)
tatheti covāca himāṁśumālī yuddhādapākrāmadataḥ praśāṁtaḥ bṛhaspatistāmatha gṛhya tārāṁ hṛṣṭo jagāma svagṛhaṁ ca rudraḥ
'So be it,' said the cool-rayed one, and, thus pacified, withdrew from battle. Brihaspati then, taking Tara back, and Rudra too, delighted, went to their own homes.
Verse 43 (padma.1.12.43)
pulastya uvāca tataḥ saṁvatsarasyāṁte dvādaśādityasannibhaḥ divyapītāmbaradharo divyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ
Pulastya said: Then, at the end of a year, resembling twelve Adityas in splendor, clad in divine yellow garments, adorned with divine ornaments,
Verse 44 (padma.1.12.44)
tārodaraviniṣkrāntaḥ kumārassūryasannibhaḥ sarvārthaśāstravidvidvānhastiśāstrapravarttakaḥ
emerging from Tara's womb, a boy resembling the sun, a scholar versed in every branch of learning, the founder of the science of elephant-lore,
Verse 45 (padma.1.12.45)
nāmayadrājaputroyaṁ viśruto rājavaidyakaḥ rājñaḥ somasya putratvādrājaputro budhaḥ smṛtaḥ
named — this 'son of the king', renowned as royal physician. Because he was the son of King Soma, he is remembered as Budha, 'the Prince'.
Verse 46 (padma.1.12.46)
janānāṁ tu sa tejāṁsi sarvāṇyevākṣipadbalī brahmādyāstatra cājagmurdevā devarṣibhiḥ saha
That mighty child eclipsed the splendor of all people. Brahma and the other gods came there together with the divine sages,
Verse 47 (padma.1.12.47)
bṛhaspatigṛhe sarve jātakarmotsave tadā papracchuste surāstārāṁ kena jātaḥ kumārakaḥ
all to the house of Brihaspati, for the birth-rite celebration. Those gods asked Tara: 'By whom was this boy born?'
Verse 48 (padma.1.12.48)
tataḥ sā lajjitā teṣāṁ na kiṁcidavadattadā punaḥ punastadā pṛṣṭā lajjayaṁtī varāṁganā
Ashamed before them, she said nothing at that time. Asked again and again, that fair woman, overcome with shame,
Verse 49 (padma.1.12.49)
somasyeti cirādāha tato gṛhṇādvidhuḥ sutaṁ budha ityakaronnāma prādādrājyaṁ ca bhūtale
finally, after a long while, said: 'He is Soma's.' Then the moon accepted the son, gave him the name Budha, and gave him a kingdom upon the earth.
Verse 50 (padma.1.12.50)
abhiṣekaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā pradānamakarodvibhuḥ grahamadhyaṁ pradāyātha brahmā brahmarṣibhiryutaḥ
Having then performed his consecration, the mighty one made the gift. Having placed him among the ranks of the planets, Brahma, together with the Brahmarshis,
Verse 51 (padma.1.12.51)
paśyatāṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ tatraivāṁtaradhīyata ilodare ca dharmiṣṭhaṁ budhaḥ putramajījanat
vanished right there, in the sight of all beings. And in Ila's womb, Budha begot a most righteous son,
Verse 52 (padma.1.12.52)
aśvamedhaśataṁsāgramakarodyassvatejasā purūravā iti khyātaḥ sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ
who, by his own power, performed a full hundred Ashvamedha sacrifices, renowned as Pururavas, saluted by all the worlds.
Verse 53 (padma.1.12.53)
himavacchikhare ramye samārādhya pitāmahaṁ lokaiśvaryamagādrājansaptadvīpapatistadā
