In this connection, an ancient verse of lineage used to be sung: Shashabindu had a hundred hundreds of sons — ten thousand in all.

nideśasthāyinaścāpi tayordevāsurā svayaṁ baddho balirvimardoyaṁ susaṁvṛttaḥ sudāruṇaḥ

Both gods and asuras themselves abided by their commands. Then Bali was bound, and this most terrible conflict came fully to pass —

Verse 176 (padma.1.13.176)

devānāmasurāṇāṁ ca ghoraḥ kṣayakaro mahān kartuṁ dharmavyavasthāṁ ca jāyate mānuṣeṣviha

a great conflict, destructive to both gods and asuras alike. To establish the order of dharma, he is born here among men,

Verse 177 (padma.1.13.177)

bhṛgoḥ śāpanimittaṁ tu devāsurakṛte tadā bhīṣma uvāca kathaṁ devāsurakṛte harirdehamavāptavān

then, on account of Bhrigu's curse, for the sake of the gods and asuras. Bhishma said: For the sake of gods and asuras, how did Hari come to take on a body?

Verse 178 (padma.1.13.178)

daivāsuraṁ yathāvṛttaṁ tanme kathaya suvrata pulastya uvāca teṣāṁ jayanimittaṁ vai saṁgrāmā syuḥ sudāruṇāḥ

Tell me, O one of good vows, how the conflict between gods and asuras came to pass. Pulastya said: For the sake of victory over them, most terrible battles took place —

Verse 179 (padma.1.13.179)

avatārā daśadvau ca śuddhā manvaṁtare smṛtāḥ nāmadheyaṁ samāsena śṛṇu teṣāṁ vivakṣitam

Within a single Manvantara, twelve pure incarnations are remembered; hear now, in brief, their names as I intend to tell them.

Verse 180 (padma.1.13.180)

prathamo nārasiṁhastu dvitīyaścāpi vāmanaḥ tṛtīyastu varāhaśca caturtho'mṛtamaṁthanaḥ

The first was Narasimha, the second was Vamana, the third was Varaha, and the fourth was at the churning of the nectar —

Verse 181 (padma.1.13.181)

saṁgrāmaḥ paṁcamaścaiva sughorastārakāmayaḥ ṣaṣṭho hyāḍībakākhyaśca saptamastraipurastathā

the fifth was the most terrible war called Tarakamaya; the sixth was called Adibaka, and the seventh was the destruction of Tripura,

Verse 182 (padma.1.13.182)

aṣṭamaścāṁdhakavadho navamo vṛtraghātanaḥ dhvajaśca daśamasteṣāṁ hālāhalastataḥ paraṁ

the eighth was the slaying of Andhaka, the ninth the slaying of Vritra; the tenth was the Dhvaja war, and after that came Halahala —

Verse 183 (padma.1.13.183)

prathito dvādaśasteṣāṁ ghoraḥ kolāhalastathā hiraṇyakaśipurdaityo narasiṁhena sūditaḥ

and the twelfth among them, renowned, was the terrible Kolahala. The daitya Hiranyakashipu was destroyed by Narasimha;

Verse 184 (padma.1.13.184)

vāmanena balirbaddhastrailokyākramaṇe purā hiraṇyākṣo hato dvaṁdve prativāde tu daivataiḥ

in ancient times, while striding across the three worlds, Vamana bound Bali; Hiranyaksha was slain in single combat, in a dispute with the gods,

Verse 185 (padma.1.13.185)

daṁṣṭrayā tu varāheṇa samudrastho dvidhā kṛtaḥ prahlādo nirjito yuddhe iṁdreṇāmṛtamaṁthane

cleft in two by Varaha's tusk while he lay in the ocean. At the churning of the nectar, Prahlada was defeated in battle by Indra;

Verse 186 (padma.1.13.186)

virocanastu prāhlādirnityamindravadhodyataḥ iṁdreṇaiva ca vikramya nihatastārakāmaye

Virochana, son of Prahlada, ever intent on slaying Indra, was struck down by Indra himself, through his own valor, in the war called Tarakamaya.

Verse 187 (padma.1.13.187)

aśaknuvatsu deveṣu tripuraṁ soḍhumāsuram mohayitvā'mṛte pīte gorūpeṇāsurāriṇā

When the gods proved unable to withstand the demonic power of Tripura. And at the drinking of the nectar, the enemy of the asuras, having deluded them by taking on the form of a cow,

Verse 188 (padma.1.13.188)

nāsanjīvayituṁ śakyā bhūyo bhūyomṛtāsurāḥ nihatā dānavāḥ sarve trailokye tryaṁbakeṇa tu

made it so that the asuras, once slain again and again, could no longer be brought back to life; all those danavas were slain throughout the three worlds by Tryambaka (Shiva).

Verse 189 (padma.1.13.189)

asurāśca piśācāśca dānavāścāṁdhake vadhe hatā devamanuṣyaiste pitṛbhiścaiva sarvaśaḥ

In the slaying of Andhaka, the asuras, pishachas, and danavas were all entirely slain by the gods, men, and Pitris together.

Verse 190 (padma.1.13.190)

saṁpṛkto dānavairvṛtro ghore kolāhale hataḥ tadā viṣṇusahāyena maheṁdreṇa nipātitaḥ

Vritra, allied with the danavas, was slain in the terrible Kolahala war; he was then struck down by Mahendra, with Vishnu's aid.

Verse 191 (padma.1.13.191)

hatastato maheṁdreṇa māyāchannastu yogavit vajreṇa kṣaṇamāviśya vipracittiḥ sahānugaḥ

Then Vipracitti, skilled in yogic power, concealed by illusion, was struck down along with his followers by Mahendra's thunderbolt in an instant.

Verse 192 (padma.1.13.192)

daityāśca dānavāścaiva saṁyutāḥ kṛtsnaśastu te ete daivā'surāvṛttāḥ saṁgrāmādvā daśaiva tu

The daityas and danavas, all of them together, took part entirely in these battles. These, then, were the ten great conflicts between gods and asuras,

Verse 193 (padma.1.13.193)

devāsurakṣayakarāḥ prajānāṁ ca hitāya vai hiraṇyakaśipū rājā varṣāṇāmarbudaṁ babhau

destructive of both gods and asuras, yet for the welfare of created beings. King Hiranyakashipu shone forth for an arbuda of years,

Verse 194 (padma.1.13.194)

dvisaptatiṁ tathānyāni niyutānyadhikāni tu aśīti ca sahasrāṇi trailokyaiśvaryavānabhūt

with seventy-two additional hundred-thousands, and eighty thousand more — for that whole span he remained lord of the sovereignty of the three worlds.

Verse 195 (padma.1.13.195)

paryāyeṇa tu rājābhūdbalirvarṣārbudaṁ punaḥ ṣaṣṭhiṁ caiva sahasrāṇi niyutāni ca viṁśatiṁ

In due succession, Bali again became king for an arbuda of years, together with sixty thousand more and twenty hundred-thousand years besides,

Verse 196 (padma.1.13.196)

balirājyādhikāre tu yāvatkālaśca kīrtitaḥ tāvatkālaṁ tu prahlādo nirvṛto hyasuraiḥ saha

for as long as Bali's period of sovereignty is told, for that same span Prahlada too lived contentedly together with the asuras.

Verse 197 (padma.1.13.197)

jayārthamete vijñeyā asurāṇāṁ mahaujasaḥ trailokyamidamavyagraṁ maheṁdreṇānupālyate

All this is to be understood as pertaining only to the periods of victory of the mighty asuras; otherwise this undisturbed triple world is continually protected by Mahendra alone.

Verse 198 (padma.1.13.198)

asampannamidaṁ sarvaṁ yāvadvarṣāyutaṁ punaḥ paryāyeṇaiva samprāpte trailokyaṁ pākaśāsane

All this remained incomplete until ten thousand years had passed once more; then in due course the triple world came again to Pakashasana (Indra).

Verse 199 (padma.1.13.199)

tato'surānparityajya yajño devānagacchata yajñe devānatha gate ditijāḥ kāvyamabruvan

Then, abandoning the asuras, sacrifice went over to the gods. When sacrifice had gone over to the gods, the sons of Diti spoke to Kavya (Shukra):

Verse 200 (padma.1.13.200)

daityā ūcuḥ- hṛtaṁ maghavatā rājyaṁ tyaktvā yajñaḥ surāngataḥ sthātuṁ na śuknumo hyatra praviśāmo rasātalam

The daityas said: 'Our kingdom has been seized by Maghavan (Indra); sacrifice has forsaken us and gone over to the gods. We can no longer remain here — let us enter Rasatala, the netherworld.'

Verse 201 (padma.1.13.201)

evamuktobravīdetānviṣaṇṇānsāṁtvayangirā mā bhaiṣṭa dhārayiṣyāmi tejasā svena vo'surāḥ

Thus addressed, he spoke to those sorrowful daityas, consoling them: 'Fear not, O asuras — I shall sustain you by my own power.

Verse 202 (padma.1.13.202)

maṁtrāścauṣadhayaścaiva dharāyāṁ yattu vartate mayi tiṣṭhati tatsarvaṁ pādamātraṁ sureṣu vai

Whatever mantras and herbs exist upon the earth — all of that abides in me alone; among the gods there remains only a bare quarter part of it.

Verse 203 (padma.1.13.203)

tatsarvaṁ ca pradāsyāmi yuṣmadarthe dhṛtaṁ mayā tato devāstutāndṛṣṭvā dhṛtānkāvyena dhīmatā

'All of that which I hold, I shall give for your sake.' Then the gods, seeing them thus sustained by the wise Kavya,

Verse 204 (padma.1.13.204)

amaṁtrayaṁta devā vai saṁvignāstajjighṛkṣayā kāvyo hyeṣa idaṁ sarvaṁ vyāvartayati no balāt

took counsel among themselves, troubled and desiring to seize that power: 'This Kavya is forcibly turning all of this away from us.

Verse 205 (padma.1.13.205)

sādhu gacchāmahe tūrṇaṁ yāvanna cyāvayeta vai prasahya jitvā śiṣṭāṁstu pātālaṁ prāpayāmahe

It is best that we go swiftly, before he can dislodge us; let us overpower and conquer the rest of them, and drive them down into Patala.'

Verse 206 (padma.1.13.206)

tato devāstu saṁrabdhā dānavānupasṛtya ha tataste vadhyamānāstaiḥ kāvyamevābhidudruvuḥ

Then the enraged gods fell upon the danavas; and being slain by them, those danavas fled straight for refuge to Kavya.

Verse 207 (padma.1.13.207)

tataḥ kāvyastu tāndṛṣṭvā tūrṇaṁ devairabhidrutān rakṣākāryeṇa saṁhṛtya devebhyastānsurārditān

Then Kavya, seeing them swiftly pursued by the gods, gathered up those tormented asuras for the sake of protecting them from the gods.

Verse 208 (padma.1.13.208)

kāvyaṁ dṛṣṭvā sthitaṁ devā nirviśaṁkāstu te jahuḥ tataḥ kāvyonuciṁtyātha brahmaṇo vacanaṁ hitam

Seeing Kavya standing there, the gods, though free of fear, withdrew from that place. Then Kavya, reflecting on Brahma's beneficial counsel,

Verse 209 (padma.1.13.209)

tānuvāca tataḥ kāvyaḥ pūrvavṛttamanusmaran trailokyaṁ vo hṛtaṁ sarvaṁ vāmanena tribhiḥ kramaiḥ

recalling what had happened before, spoke to them: 'Your entire triple world was seized by Vamana in three strides;

Verse 210 (padma.1.13.210)

balirbaddho hato jaṁbho nihataśca virocanaḥ mahāsurā dvādaśasu saṁgrāmeṣu surairhatāḥ

Bali was bound, Jambha was slain, and Virochana too was struck down; great asuras were slain by the gods in twelve battles.

Verse 211 (padma.1.13.211)

taistairupāyairbhūyiṣṭhā nihatāstu pradhānataḥ kecicchiṣṭāśca yūyaṁ vai yuddhaṁ nāstīti me matam

By these very means, most of our chief leaders have already been slain; only a few of you remain — it is my opinion that there should be no more war.

Verse 212 (padma.1.13.212)

nītayo vo vidhātavyā upāse kālaparyayāt yāsyāmyahaṁ mahādevaṁ maṁtrārthaṁ vijayāvaham

You must decide your own policy while awaiting the passage of time; I shall go to Mahadeva to obtain a victory-bringing mantra.

Verse 213 (padma.1.13.213)

apratīpāṁstato devānmaṁtrānprāpya maheśvarāt yotsyāmahe punardevaistataḥ prāpsyatha vai jayam

Having obtained from Maheshvara mantras that the gods cannot withstand, we shall fight the gods once more — then you shall surely obtain victory.

Verse 214 (padma.1.13.214)

tataste kṛtasaṁvādā devānūcustadāsurāḥ nyastaśastrā vayaṁ sarve niḥssannāhā rathairvinā

Having agreed on this, the asuras then said to the gods: 'We have all laid down our weapons, and are now without armor and without chariots.

Verse 215 (padma.1.13.215)

vayaṁ tapaścariṣyāmaḥ saṁvṛtā valkalaistathā devāsteṣāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā satyābhivyāhṛtaṁ tataḥ

We shall now perform austerities, clad in bark garments.' The gods, hearing these truthfully spoken words,

Verse 216 (padma.1.13.216)

tatonyavartayansarve vijvarā muditāśca te nyastaśastreṣu daityeṣu vinivṛttāstadā surāḥ

then all withdrew, freed of anxiety and rejoicing; since the daityas had laid down their weapons, the gods too turned back from war.

Verse 217 (padma.1.13.217)

tatastānabravītkāvya upādhvaṁ tapasi sthitāḥ nirutsiktāstapoyuktāḥ kālaṁ kāryārthasādhakam

Then Kavya said to them: 'Remain established in austerity, free of pride and devoted to penance, until the time comes that accomplishes our purpose.

Verse 218 (padma.1.13.218)

piturāśramasaṁsthā vai māṁ pratīkṣatha dānavāḥ tānuddiśyāsurānkāvyo mahādevaṁ prapadyata

Remain, O danavas, settled in my father's hermitage, and await my return.' Having thus instructed the asuras, Kavya betook himself to Mahadeva.

Verse 219 (padma.1.13.219)

śukra uvāca maṁtrānicchāmyahaṁ deva yena santi bṛhaspatau parābhavāya devānāmasurāṇāṁ jayāya ca

Shukra said: 'O god, I desire those mantras which reside in Brihaspati, for the defeat of the gods and the victory of the asuras.'

Verse 220 (padma.1.13.220)

evamuktobravīddevo vrataṁ tvaṁ cara bhārgava pūrṇaṁ varṣasahasraṁ tu kaṇadhūmamadhaḥ śirāḥ

Thus addressed, the god said: 'O Bhargava, observe this vow for a full thousand years, subsisting on smoke and husks, with your head hung down —

Verse 221 (padma.1.13.221)

yadi pāsyasi bhadraṁ te tato maṁtrānavāpsyasi tatheti samanujñāpya śukrastu bhṛgunaṁdanaḥ

if you can endure this, good fortune shall be yours, and then you shall obtain the mantras.' Shukra, saying 'so be it,' the son of Bhrigu, taking his leave,

Verse 222 (padma.1.13.222)

pādau saṁspṛśya devasya bāḍhamityabravīdvacaḥ vrataṁ carāmyahaṁ deva tvayādiṣṭodya vai prabho

touched the god's feet and said, 'Very well.' 'O God, O Lord, I shall now practice the vow you have this day instructed me in.'

Verse 223 (padma.1.13.223)

ādiṣṭo devadevena kṛtavānbhārgavo muniḥ tadā tasmingate śukre asurāṇāṁ hitāya vai

Thus instructed by the God of gods, the sage of Bhrigu's line did accordingly. While Shukra had gone away for the welfare of the asuras,

Verse 224 (padma.1.13.224)

maṁtrārthe tanute kāvyo brahmacaryaṁ maheśvarāt tadbuddhvā nītipūrvaṁ vai rājanyāstu tadā sukhaṁ

Kavya, as taught by Maheshvara, extended his vow of celibate austerity for the sake of the mantra. Knowing this, the warrior-gods, following policy and at ease,

Verse 225 (padma.1.13.225)

asmiṁśchidre tadāmarṣāddevāstānabhidudruvuḥ daṁśitāḥ sāyudhāḥ sarve bṛhaspatipuraḥsarāḥ

seized upon this opening, and out of impatience, the gods, with Brihaspati at their head, all armored and armed, fell upon them.

Verse 226 (padma.1.13.226)

dṛṣṭvā suragaṇā devānpragṛhītāyudhānpunaḥ utpetussahasā sarve saṁtrastāstānvacobruvat

Seeing the host of gods once more with weapons raised, they all suddenly rose in terror and spoke these words to them.

Verse 227 (padma.1.13.227)

daityā ūcuḥ nyastaśastrā vayaṁ devā ācārye vratamāsthite datvā bhavaṁtastvabhayaṁ saṁprāptā no jighāṁsayā

The daityas said: 'O gods, we have laid down our weapons, while our teacher remains engaged in his vow. Having granted us safety, you now come with intent to kill us.

Verse 228 (padma.1.13.228)

anamarṣā vayaṁ sarve tyaktaśastrāśca saṁsthitāḥ cīrakṛṣṇājinadharā niṣkriyā niṣparigrahāḥ

We all remain here without resentment, having cast our weapons aside, clad in bark and deerskin, without ritual acts, without possessions.

Verse 229 (padma.1.13.229)

raṇe vijetuṁ devāṁśca na śakṣyāmaḥ kathaṁcana ayuddhena prapatsyāmaḥ śaraṇaṁ kāvyamātaram

We shall be unable, in any way, to defeat the gods in battle; without fighting, we shall take refuge with Kavya's mother.

Verse 230 (padma.1.13.230)

jñāpayāmaḥ kṛcchramidaṁ yāvannābhyeti no guruḥ nivṛtte ca tathā śukre yotsyāmo daṁśitāyudhāḥ

We shall make known this hardship until our teacher returns to us; and when Shukra comes back, we shall fight, armored and armed.'

Verse 231 (padma.1.13.231)

evamuktvā ca tenyonyaṁ śaraṇaṁ kāvyamātaram prāpadyaṁta tato bhītāstebhyo'dādabhayaṁ tu sā

Having said this to one another, they, in fear, went for refuge to Kavya's mother; and she granted them safety.

Verse 232 (padma.1.13.232)

na bhetavyaṁ na bhetavyaṁ bhayaṁ tyajata dānavāḥ matsannidhau varttatāṁ vo na bhīrbhaviturmahati

'Do not fear, do not fear, O danavas — cast away your fear. Remain in my presence; there shall be no great danger for you.'

Verse 233 (padma.1.13.233)

tayābhirakṣitāṁstāṁśca dṛṣṭvā devāstadā'surān abhijagmuḥ prasahyaitānavicārya balābalam

Seeing those asuras thus protected by her, the gods, without considering strength or weakness, attacked them by force.

Verse 234 (padma.1.13.234)

tatastānbadhyamānāṁstu devairdṛṣṭvāsurāṁstadā devī kruddhābravīddevānnidrayā mohayāmyaham

Then, seeing those asuras being slain by the gods, the goddess, enraged, said to the gods, 'I shall now delude you with sleep.'

Verse 235 (padma.1.13.235)

saṁbhṛtya sarvasaṁbhārānnidrāṁ sā vyasṛjattadā tastaṁbha devī ca balādyogayuktā tapodhanā

Gathering all her materials, she then unleashed sleep; and the goddess, endowed with yogic power and rich in austerity, forcibly paralyzed Indra.

Verse 236 (padma.1.13.236)

tatastaṁ stabhitaṁ dṛṣṭvā indraṁ devāśca mūḍhavat prādravaṁta tato bhītā indraṁ dṛṣṭvā vaśīkṛtam

Seeing Indra thus paralyzed, the gods, as if stunned, fled in terror at the sight of Indra brought under her power.

Verse 237 (padma.1.13.237)

gateṣu surasaṁgheṣu viṣṇuriṁdramabhāṣata viṣṇuruvāca māṁ tvaṁ praviśa bhadraṁ te rakṣiṣye tvāṁ surottama

When the hosts of gods had fled, Vishnu spoke to Indra. Vishnu said: 'Enter into me; may good come to you — I shall protect you, O best of gods.'

Verse 238 (padma.1.13.238)

evamuktastato viṣṇuṁ praviveśa puraṁdaraḥ viṣṇusaṁrakṣitaṁ dṛṣṭvā devī kruddhā vaco'bravīt

Thus addressed, Purandara (Indra) entered into Vishnu. Seeing him protected by Vishnu, the goddess, enraged, spoke these words:

Verse 239 (padma.1.13.239)

eṣa tvāṁ viṣṇunā sārdhaṁ dahāmi maghavanbalāt miṣatāṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ dṛśyatāṁ me tapobalam

'O Maghavan, I shall now burn you, together with Vishnu, by force; let the power of my austerity be witnessed by all beings as they watch.'

Verse 240 (padma.1.13.240)

tayābhibhūtau tau devāviṁdraviṣṇū babhūvatuḥ kathaṁ mucyeya sahito viṣṇuriṁdramabhāṣata

Overpowered by her, those two gods, Indra and Vishnu, became helpless. 'How may I be freed?' — thus Vishnu spoke, together with Indra, in distress.

Verse 241 (padma.1.13.241)

iṁdrobravījjahi hyenāṁ yāvannau na dahetprabho viśeṣeṇābhibhūtosmi jahīmāṁ jahi mā ciram

Indra said: 'Slay her, O Lord, before she can burn us both; I am especially overpowered — kill her, kill her without delay.'

Verse 242 (padma.1.13.242)

tataḥ samīkṣya viṣṇustāṁstrīvadhe kṛcchramāsthitaḥ abhidhyāya tataḥ śakramāpannaṁ satvaraṁ prabhuḥ

Then Vishnu, reflecting, found himself in a grave difficulty over the killing of a woman; yet, thinking of Shakra in his peril, the Lord acted swiftly.

Verse 243 (padma.1.13.243)

tataḥ sa tvarayāyuktaḥ śīghrakārī bhayānvitaḥ jñātvā viṣṇustatastasyāḥ krūraṁ devyāścikīrṣitam

Then, urged by haste, acting at once, filled with urgency, Vishnu, having understood that goddess's cruel intent,

Verse 244 (padma.1.13.244)

kruddhaśca cakramādāya śiraściccheda vai bhayāt taṁ dṛṣṭvā strīvadhaṁ ghoraṁ cukrodha bhṛgurīśvaraḥ

in anger took up his discus and, driven by urgency, severed her head. Seeing that terrible slaying of a woman, the mighty Bhrigu became enraged.

Verse 245 (padma.1.13.245)

tato hi śapto bhṛguṇā viṣṇurbhāryāvadhe kṛte bhṛguruvāca yattvayā jānatā dharmamavadhyā strī niṣūditā

Then, for the killing of his wife, Bhrigu cursed Vishnu. Bhrigu said: 'Since, though knowing dharma, you have slain a woman who should never be slain,

Verse 246 (padma.1.13.246)

tasmāttvaṁ saptakṛtvo hi mānuṣeṣūpayāsyasi tatastenābhiśāpena naṣṭe dharme punaḥpunaḥ

therefore you shall indeed be born among men seven times.' Then, by virtue of that curse, whenever dharma comes to ruin, again and again,

Verse 247 (padma.1.13.247)

lokasya ca hitārthāya jāyate mānuṣeṣviha atha vyāhṛtya viṣṇuṁ sa tadādāya śiraḥ svayam

he is born here among men for the welfare of the world. Then, having said this to Vishnu, he himself took up that severed head,

Verse 248 (padma.1.13.248)

samānīya tataḥ kāyaṁ pāṇau gṛhyedamabravīt bhṛguruvāca eṣā tvaṁ viṣṇunā devi hatā saṁjīvayāmyahaṁ

and bringing it near the body, taking it in his hand, he said this. Bhrigu said: 'O goddess, slain by Vishnu, I shall now bring you back to life —

Verse 249 (padma.1.13.249)

yadi kṛtsno mayā dharmo jñāyate caritopi vā tena satyena jīvasva yadi satyaṁ bravīmyaham

if the whole of dharma has been known and practiced by me, then by that very truth — if what I say is true — may you live again.'

Verse 250 (padma.1.13.250)

tatastāṁ prokṣya śītādbhirjīvajīveti sobravīt tatobhivyāhṛte tasmindevī saṁjīvitā tadā

Then, sprinkling her with cool water, he said, 'Live, live'; and as soon as he had spoken thus, the goddess was at once brought back to life.

Verse 251 (padma.1.13.251)

tatastāṁ sarvabhūtāni dṛṣṭvā suptotthitāmiva sādhusādhviti dṛṣṭvaiva vacastāṁ sarvatobruvan

Then all beings, seeing her as though risen from sleep, cried out from every side, on seeing her, 'Well done, well done!'

Verse 252 (padma.1.13.252)

evaṁ pratyāhṛtā tena devī sā bhṛguṇā tadā miṣatāṁ daivatānāṁ hi tadadbhutamivābhavat

Thus Bhrigu, in this manner, restored the goddess to life; while all the gods looked on, it seemed indeed a wondrous event.

Verse 253 (padma.1.13.253)

asaṁbhrāṁtena bhṛguṇā patnī saṁjīvitā punaḥ dṛṣṭvā ceṁdro nālabhata śarma kāvyabhayātpunaḥ

Undisturbed, Bhrigu brought his wife back to life once more. Seeing this, Indra found no peace again, out of fear of Kavya.

Verse 254 (padma.1.13.254)

prajāgare tataśceṁdro jayaṁtīmidamabravīt saṁdhikāmobhyadhādvākyaṁ svāṁ kanyāṁ pākaśāsanaḥ

Then, lying sleepless, Indra spoke thus to Jayanti; desiring reconciliation, Pakashasana (Indra) addressed these words to his own daughter.

Verse 255 (padma.1.13.255)

indra uvāca eṣa kāvyo hyaniṁdrāya vrataṁ carati dāruṇam tenāhaṁ vyākulaḥ putri kṛto matimatā dṛḍham

Indra said: 'This Kavya practices a terrible vow in order to unseat me from Indra's throne; by this resolute and wise one, my daughter, I have been thrown into deep distress.

Verse 256 (padma.1.13.256)

taistairmanonukūlaiśca upacārairataṁdritā ārādhaya tathā putri yathā tuṣyeta sa dvijaḥ

With every attention that might please his mind, tirelessly, propitiate him, my daughter, in such a way that that brahmin becomes satisfied.

Verse 257 (padma.1.13.257)

gaccha tvaṁ tasya dattāsi prayatnaṁ kuru matkṛte evamuktā jayaṁtī sā vacaḥ saṁgṛhya vai pituḥ

Go — you are given over to him; make this effort for my sake.' Thus addressed, Jayanti, taking her father's words to heart,

Verse 258 (padma.1.13.258)

agacchadyatra ghoraṁ sa tapo hyārabhya tiṣṭhati taṁ dṛṣṭvā ca pibaṁtaṁ sā kaṇadhūmamadhomukham

went to where he remained, having undertaken his terrible austerity. She saw him drinking smoke and husks, his head bowed down,

Verse 259 (padma.1.13.259)

yakṣeṇa pātyamānaṁ ca kuṁḍadhāreṇa pāvanam dṛṣṭvā taṁ yatamānaṁ tu devī kāvyamavasthitam

being made to drink it from a purifying vessel held by a yaksha. Seeing that resolute Kavya thus striving in his firm resolve,

Verse 260 (padma.1.13.260)

śatrūpaghāte śrāmyaṁntaṁ durbalasthitimāsthitam pitrā yathoktaṁ vākyaṁ sā kāvye kṛtavatī tadā

wearied in his effort to destroy his enemy, reduced to a state of weakness — the goddess Jayanti then did as her father had instructed, in service of Kavya.

Verse 261 (padma.1.13.261)

gīrbhiścaivānukūlābhiḥ stuvaṁtī valgubhāṣiṇī gātrasaṁvāhanaiḥ kāle sevamānā tvacaḥ sukhaiḥ

Praising him with sweet and pleasing words, and serving him at the right times with soothing massage and comforts for the skin,

Verse 262 (padma.1.13.262)

vratacaryānukūlābhirupāsya bahulāḥ samāḥ pūrṇe dhūmavrate tasminghore varṣasahasrake

attending upon him for many years with services suited to his vow — when that terrible thousand-year vow of smoke came to completion,

Verse 263 (padma.1.13.263)

vareṇa chaṁdayāmāsa śivaḥ prītobhavattadā maheśvara uvāca etadvrataṁ tvayaikena cīrṇaṁ nānyena kenacit

Shiva, well pleased, then invited him to choose a boon. Maheshvara said: 'This vow has been observed by you alone, by none other.

Verse 264 (padma.1.13.264)

tasmādvai tapasā buddhyā śrutena ca balena ca tejasā ca surānsarvāṁstvamekobhibhaviṣyasi

Therefore, by austerity, wisdom, learning, strength, and splendor, you alone shall surpass all the gods.

Verse 265 (padma.1.13.265)

yacca kiṁcinmayi brahmanvidyate bhṛgunaṁdana pratidāsyāmi tatsarvaṁ tvayā vācyaṁ na kasyacit

And whatever exists within me, O brahmin, descendant of Bhrigu, I shall give all of it to you in return; this must not be spoken of to anyone.

Verse 266 (padma.1.13.266)

kiṁ bhāṣitena bahunā avadhyastvaṁ bhaviṣyasi tāndatvā tu varāṁstasmai bhārgavāya punaḥ punaḥ

What need of many words — you shall become unslayable.' Granting boon after boon to the descendant of Bhrigu in this manner,

Verse 267 (padma.1.13.267)

prajeśatvaṁ dhaneśatvamavadhyatvaṁ ca vai dadau etānlabdhvā varānkāvyaḥ saṁprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ

he granted him lordship over creatures, lordship over wealth, and invulnerability besides. Having obtained these boons, the hairs on Kavya's body stood on end with joy.

Verse 268 (padma.1.13.268)

evamābhāṣya deveśamīśvaraṁ nīlalohitam prajñānvitastatastasmai prāñjali praṇato 'bhavat

Having thus spoken to Ishvara Nilalohita, Lord of the gods, that wise one then bowed to him with joined palms.

Verse 269 (padma.1.13.269)

tataḥ soṁ'tarhite deve jayaṁtīmidamabravīt kasya tvaṁ subhage kā vā duḥkhite mayi duḥkhitā

When the god had vanished, he said this to Jayanti: 'O fortunate one, whose are you? And why did you share in my sorrow while I suffered?

Verse 270 (padma.1.13.270)

mahatā tapasā yuktā kimarthaṁ māṁ jigīṣasi anayā saṁsthitā bhaktyā praśrayeṇa damena ca

You yourself are endowed with great austerity — for what purpose do you seek to win me over? Established in such devotion, humility, and self-restraint,

Verse 271 (padma.1.13.271)

snehena caiva suśroṇi prītosmi varavarṇini kimicchasi varārohe kaste kāmaḥ samudyataḥ

and with such tender affection, O fair one of lovely form, I am well pleased. What do you desire, O beautiful one? What wish has arisen in you?

Verse 272 (padma.1.13.272)

taṁ te saṁpādayāmyadya yadyapi syātsuduṣkaram evamuktābravīdenaṁ tapasā jñātumarhasi

Today I shall fulfill it for you, however difficult it may be.' Thus addressed, she said: 'You ought to know it yourself, through your own power of austerity —

Verse 273 (padma.1.13.273)

cikīrṣitaṁ hi me brahmaṁstvaṁ vai vada yathātatham evamuktobravīdenaṁ dṛṣṭvā divyena cakṣuṣā

what my intention truly is, O brahmin; tell it yourself, exactly as it is.' Thus addressed, seeing with his divine eye, he said to her —

Verse 274 (padma.1.13.274)

mayā saha tvaṁ suśroṇi śatavarṣāṇi bhāmini sarvabhūtairadṛśyāṁtaḥ saṁprayogamihecchasi

'O fair one, O radiant lady, you desire union with me here, unseen by all beings, for a hundred years,

Verse 275 (padma.1.13.275)

devi iṁdīvaraśyāme varārhe vāmalocane evaṁ vṛṇoṣi kāmāṁstvaṁ dade vai valgubhāṣite

O goddess, dark as the blue lotus, worthy of every honor, of lovely eyes — this is the desire you have chosen.' 'I grant it,' said the sweetly-speaking one.

Verse 276 (padma.1.13.276)

evaṁ bhavatu gacchāva gṛhaṁ me mattakāśini tataḥ sa gṛhamāgamya jayaṁtyā saha cośanā

'So be it — let us go to my home, O radiant one.' Then Ushanas (Shukra), together with Jayanti, went to his home,

Verse 277 (padma.1.13.277)

tayā sahāvasaddevyā śatavarṣāṇi bhārgavaḥ adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ māyayā saṁśitavrataḥ

and that descendant of Bhrigu dwelt there with that goddess for a hundred years, hidden from all beings by her illusion, his stern vow firmly kept.

Verse 278 (padma.1.13.278)

kṛtārthamāgataṁ jñātvā śukraṁ sarve ditessutāḥ abhijagmurgṛhaṁ tasya muditāste didṛkṣavaḥ

Knowing that Shukra had returned, his purpose accomplished, all the sons of Diti went rejoicing to his house, eager to see him.

Verse 279 (padma.1.13.279)

gatā yadā na paśyaṁti māyayā saṁvṛtaṁ gurum lakṣaṇaṁ tasya cābuddhvā nādyāgacchati no guruḥ

Going there, they could not see their teacher, concealed as he was by illusion; finding no sign of him, they said, 'Our teacher has still not returned.'

Verse 280 (padma.1.13.280)

evaṁ te svāni dhiṣṇyāni gatāḥ sarve yathāgatāḥ tato devagaṇāssarve gatvāṁgirasamabruvan

Thus they all returned to their own dwellings just as they had come. Then all the hosts of gods went to Angiras (Brihaspati) and said —

Verse 281 (padma.1.13.281)

dānavālaye tu bhagavāngatvā tatra ca tāṁ camūm mohayitvātmavaśagāṁ kṣiprameva tathā kuru

'O illustrious one, go to the abode of the danavas, and having deluded that host, bring it swiftly under your own control — do this.'

Verse 282 (padma.1.13.282)

dhiṣaṇastānsurānāha evameva vrajāmyaham tena gatvā dānaveṁdraḥ prahlādo vai vaśīkṛtaḥ

Dhishana (Brihaspati) said to those gods, 'I shall do exactly that.' Going there, he brought the lord of the danavas, Prahlada, under his control,

Verse 283 (padma.1.13.283)

śukro bhūtvā sthitastatra paurohityaṁ cakāra saḥ sthito varṣaśataṁ sāgramuśanā tāvadāgataḥ

taking on Shukra's form, and remaining there he performed the duties of priest. He stayed there for over a hundred years, by which time Ushanas too had returned.

Verse 284 (padma.1.13.284)

danuputraistato dṛṣṭaḥ sabhāyāṁ tu bṛhaspatiḥ uśanā eka evātra dvitīyaḥ kimihāgataḥ

Then the sons of Danu, in the assembly, saw Brihaspati there — 'There was only ever one Ushanas here; who is this second one who has arrived?

Verse 285 (padma.1.13.285)

sumahatkautukaṁ cātra bhavitā vigraho dṛḍham kiṁ vadiṣyati lokoyaṁ dvāri yoyaṁ vyavasthitaḥ

This is a matter of great wonder — a fierce dispute will surely arise here. What will people say about this one standing at the door,

Verse 286 (padma.1.13.286)

sabhāyāmāsthito yoyaṁ guruḥ kiṁ no vadiṣyati evaṁ prajalpatāṁ teṣāṁ danūnāṁ kavirāgataḥ

and what will this one, already seated in the assembly as our teacher, say to us?' While the sons of Danu were thus talking among themselves, the true Kavi (Shukra) arrived.

Verse 287 (padma.1.13.287)

svarūpadhāriṇaṁ tatra dṛṣṭvāsīnaṁ bṛhaspatim uvāca vacanaṁ kruddhaḥ kimarthaṁ tvamihāgataḥ

Seeing Brihaspati seated there in his very form, he spoke angrily: 'For what purpose have you come here?

Verse 288 (padma.1.13.288)

śiṣyānmohayase me tvaṁ yuktaṁ suragurostava mūḍhāste tvāṁ na jānaṁti tvanmāyāmohitā dhruvam

You are deluding my disciples — is this fitting for you, guru of the gods? These foolish ones do not recognize you, surely deluded by your illusion.

Verse 289 (padma.1.13.289)

tanna yuktaṁ tava brahmanparaśiṣyapradharṣaṇam vraja tvaṁ devalokaṁ svaṁ tiṣṭha dharmamavāpsyasi

This transgression against another's disciples is not fitting for you, O brahmin. Go to your own world of the gods, remain there, and you shall obtain the fruit of dharma.

Verse 290 (padma.1.13.290)

śiṣyo hi me kacaḥ pūrvaṁ hato dānavapuṁgavaiḥ vidyārthī tanayo brahmaṁstavāyogyā gatistviha

My disciple Kacha, formerly, was slain by the foremost of the danavas — though he came only as a seeker of knowledge, and was moreover your own son, O brahmin. This conduct of yours here is unbecoming.'

Verse 291 (padma.1.13.291)

śrutvā tu tasya tadvākyaṁ smitaṁ kṛtvāvadadguruḥ saṁti corāḥ pṛthivyāṁ yeparadravyāpahāriṇaḥ

Hearing his words, the guru (Brihaspati), smiling, replied: 'There are thieves upon the earth who steal the wealth of others;

Verse 292 (padma.1.13.292)

evaṁ vidhānadṛṣṭāśca rūpadehāpahāriṇaḥ vṛtraghātena ceṁdrasya brahmahahatyā purābhavat

in the same way there are those seen to steal another's form and body. By the slaying of Vritra, the sin of brahmin-slaying once fell upon Indra —

Verse 293 (padma.1.13.293)

lokāyatika śāstreṇa bhavatā sā tiraskṛtā jānāmi tvāmāṁgirasaṁ devācāryaṁ bṛhaspatim

and it was you yourself who set that sin aside through the doctrine of the Lokayata (materialist) philosophy.' [Shukra continued]: 'I recognize you as Angirasa, Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods,

Verse 294 (padma.1.13.294)

madrūpadhāriṇaṁ prāptaṁ sarve paśyata dānavāḥ eṣa vo mohanāyālaṁ prāpto viṣṇuviceṣṭitaiḥ

having assumed my form and come here — behold, all you danavas! This one has come here, ready to delude you, through the machinations of Vishnu.

Verse 295 (padma.1.13.295)

tadenaṁ śṛṁkhalairbaddhvā kṣipeta lavaṇārṇave punarevābravīcchukraḥ purodhāyaṁ divaukasām

Bind him in chains and cast him into the salt ocean — this is the priest of the dwellers in heaven,' Shukra said once more.

Verse 296 (padma.1.13.296)

mohitānūnametena kṣayaṁ yāsyatha dānavāḥ bho ahaṁ dānaveṁdreha vaṁcito'smi durātmanā

'O danavas, deluded by him, you shall surely go to ruin. O lords of the danavas, I have been deceived here by this wicked one!'

Verse 297 (padma.1.13.297)

kimarthaṁ bhavatā tyaktaḥ kṛtaścānyaḥ purohitaḥ devācāryaoṁgiraḥputraeṣaevabṛhaspatiḥ

[The danavas said]: 'For what reason did you abandon us and have another appointed as priest? This is indeed Brihaspati, son of Angiras, teacher of the gods —

Verse 298 (padma.1.13.298)

vaṁcitosi na saṁdeho hitārthaṁ tu divaukasām tyajasvainaṁ mahābhāga śatrupakṣajayāvaham

you have without doubt been deceived, for the benefit of the dwellers in heaven. Abandon him, O illustrious one — he brings victory to your enemy's side.'

Verse 299 (padma.1.13.299)

anuśiṣyabhayādyātaḥ pūrvamevamahaṁ prabho jalamadhyesthitaḥ pīto mahādevena śaṁbhunā

[Shukra said]: 'O lords, I had gone away earlier, in truth, out of fear over my disciple's fate; standing in the midst of the water, I was swallowed by the great god Shambhu.

Verse 300 (padma.1.13.300)

udarasthasya me jātaṁ sāgraṁ varṣaśataṁ kila udarācchukrarūpeṇa śiśnenāhaṁ visarjitaḥ

A full hundred years and more passed while I remained within his belly; then I was released from that belly, in the form of vital seed, through his own body.

Verse 301 (padma.1.13.301)

varadaḥ prāha māṁ devaśśukreṣṭaṁ tvaṁ varaṁ vṛṇu mayāvṛto varaṁ rājandevadevaḥ pinākadhṛt

The boon-granting god said to me, 'O Shukra, choose the boon you desire.' O king, entreating him, I said to the God of gods, wielder of the Pinaka bow —

Verse 302 (padma.1.13.302)

manasā ciṁtitā hyarthā mānase ye sthitā varāḥ bhavaṁtu mayi te sarve prasādāttava śaṁkara

'Whatever purposes are conceived in the mind, whatever boons reside in one's thoughts — let all of them, O Shankara, be fulfilled in me by your grace.'

Verse 303 (padma.1.13.303)

evamastviti devena preṣito'smi tavāṁtikam tāvadatrābhavaccāyaṁ purodhāste bṛhaspatiḥ

'So be it,' said the god, and sent me forth to you. Meanwhile, this Brihaspati came here and became your priest.

Verse 304 (padma.1.13.304)

dṛṣṭaḥ satyaṁ dānaveṁdra mayoktaṁ tvaṁ niśāmaya bṛhaspatistadā vākyaṁ prahlādaṁ pratyabhāṣata

O lord of the danavas, the truth is now revealed — hear well what I have said.' Then Brihaspati spoke these words in reply to Prahlada —

Verse 305 (padma.1.13.305)

nāhametaṁ prajānāmi devaṁ vā dānavaṁ naram madrūpadhāriṇaṁ rājanvaṁcanārthaṁ tavāgatam

'I do not recognize this one — whether god, danava, or man, O king — who has assumed my form and come here for the purpose of deceiving you.'

Verse 306 (padma.1.13.306)

tataste dānavāḥ sarve sādhusādhviti vādinaḥ purodhāḥ paurviko nostu yo vā ko vā bhavatviti

Then all the danavas cried out, 'Well said, well said! Whoever our original priest truly is, let him remain ours, whoever that may be —

Verse 307 (padma.1.13.307)

nānena kāryamasmākaṁ yā tu hyeṣa yathāgataḥ sakrodhamaśapatkāvyo dānaveṁdrānsamāgatān

we have no use for this newcomer — let him go, just as he came.' Then, in anger, Kavya cursed the assembled lords of the danavas —

Verse 308 (padma.1.13.308)

tyakto yathāhaṁ yuṣmābhistathā sarvāṁścirādiva gataśrīkāngataprāṇānpaśyeyaṁ duḥkhajīvikān

'Just as you have abandoned me, so may I soon see all of you stripped of glory and of life, living out your days in misery,

Verse 309 (padma.1.13.309)

sughorāmāpadaṁ prāptānacirādeva sarvaśaḥ evamuktvā gataḥ kāvyo yadṛcchātastapovanam

having fallen entirely into the most terrible calamity, before long.' Having said this, Kavya went off, as he wished, to a forest of austerities.

Verse 310 (padma.1.13.310)

tasmingate tataḥ śukre sthitastatra bṛhaspatiḥ pālayandānavāṁstatra kiṁcitkālamatiṣṭhata

When Kavya had thus departed, Brihaspati remained there, and stayed on for some time, protecting the danavas.

Verse 311 (padma.1.13.311)

tato bahutithe kāle atikrāṁte nareśvara saṁbhūya dānavāḥ sarve paryapṛchaṁstadā gurum

O lord of men, thereafter, after much time had passed, all the danavas gathered together and questioned their guru —

Verse 312 (padma.1.13.312)

saṁsāresminnasāre tu kiṁcijjñānaṁ prayaccha naḥ yena mokṣaṁ vrajāmaśca prasādāttava suvrata

'In this fleeting, essence-less round of existence, grant us some knowledge, O one of noble vows, by which, through your grace, we may attain liberation.'

Verse 313 (padma.1.13.313)

tataḥ suraguruḥ prāha kāvyarūpī tadā guruḥ mamāpyeṣā matiḥ pūrvaṁ yā yuṣmābhirudāhṛtā

Then the teacher of the gods, in Kavya's form, said: 'This very thought was already present in my mind before you spoke it.

Verse 314 (padma.1.13.314)

kṣaṇaṁ kurvaṁtu sahitāśśucībhūya samāhitāḥ jñānaṁ vakṣyāmi vo daityā ahaṁ vai mokṣadāyi yat

Wait a moment, all of you together, made pure and composed in mind; O daityas, I shall tell you that knowledge which truly grants liberation.

Verse 315 (padma.1.13.315)

eṣā śrutirvaidikī yā ṛgyajuḥsāmasaṁjñitā vaiśvānaraprasādāttu duḥkhadā prāṇināmiha

This Vedic revelation, named Rig, Yajus, and Sama — through the agency of Vaishvanara (fire) — is here a source of suffering for living beings.

Verse 316 (padma.1.13.316)

yajñaśrāddhaṁ kṛtaṁ kṣudrairaihikasvārthatatparaiḥ ye tvamī vaiṣṇavā dharmā ye ca rudrakṛtāstathā

Sacrifice and the ancestral rite are performed by petty people intent only on the self-interest of this world. And those Vaishnava duties, and those likewise ordained by Rudra —

Verse 317 (padma.1.13.317)

kudharmā dārasahitairhiṁsāprāyāḥ kṛtāhitaiḥ arddhanārīśvaro rudra kathaṁ mokṣaṁ gamiṣyati

these are false dharmas, mostly full of violence, practiced by those living with wives, doing harm to themselves. How shall Rudra, half in the form of a woman, lead one to liberation?

Verse 318 (padma.1.13.318)

vṛto bhūtagaṇairbhūribhūṣitaścāsthibhistathā na svargo naiva mokṣotra lokāḥ kliśyaṁti vai tathā

Surrounded by hosts of ghosts, and heavily adorned with bones — there is here neither heaven nor liberation; people merely suffer thereby.

Verse 319 (padma.1.13.319)

hiṁsāyāmāsthito viṣṇuḥ kathaṁ mokṣaṁ gamiṣyati rajoguṇātmako brahmā svāṁ sṛṣṭimupajīvati

Vishnu too, engaged in violence, how shall he lead one to liberation? Brahma, whose nature is rajas, lives off his own creation.

Verse 320 (padma.1.13.320)

devarṣayotha ye cānye vaidikaṁ pakṣamāśritāḥ hiṁsāprāyāḥ sadā krūrā māṁsādāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ

And the divine sages, and others who follow the Vedic side, are mostly violent, ever cruel, eaters of flesh, and doers of sin.

Verse 321 (padma.1.13.321)

surāstu madyapānena māṁsādā brāhmaṇāstvamī dharmeṇānena kaḥ svargaṁ kathaṁ mokṣaṁ gamiṣyati

The gods are given to drinking wine, and these brahmins are eaters of flesh. By such a dharma, who shall reach heaven, and how shall liberation be attained?

Verse 322 (padma.1.13.322)

yacca yajñādikaṁ karma smārtaṁ śrāddhādikaṁ tathā tatra naivāpavargosti yatraiṣā śrūyate śrutiḥ

Sacrificial rites and the smarta rites like shraddha — wherever this Vedic revelation is proclaimed, there is no final liberation to be found.

Verse 323 (padma.1.13.323)

yajñaṁ kṛtvā paśuṁ hatvā kṛtvā rudhirakardamam yadyevaṁ gamyate svargo narakaḥ kena gamyate

If, by performing sacrifice, killing an animal, and making a mire of blood, one reaches heaven this way — then by what means does one reach hell?

Verse 324 (padma.1.13.324)

If, when food is eaten here by one person, another's hunger is thereby satisfied, then let the shraddha-offering simply be sent to one who is traveling abroad — he need not take food himself.

Verse 325 (padma.1.13.325)

ākāśagāmino viprāḥ patitā māṁsabhakṣaṇāt teṣāṁ na vidyate svargo mokṣo naiveha dānavāḥ

Brahmins who once could move through the sky have fallen because of eating flesh; O danavas, for them there exists neither heaven nor liberation here.

Verse 326 (padma.1.13.326)

jātasya jīvitaṁ jaṁtoriṣṭaṁ sarvasya jāyate ātmamāṁsopamaṁ māṁsaṁ kathaṁ khādeta paṁḍitaḥ

Life is dear to every creature that is born; flesh is comparable to one's own flesh — how then could a wise man ever eat it?

Verse 327 (padma.1.13.327)

yonijāstu kathaṁ yoniṁ sevaṁte jaṁtavastvamī maithunena kathaṁ svargaṁ yāsyaṁte dānaveśvara mṛdbhasmanā yatraśuddhistatra śuddhistu kā bhavet

And how do these creatures, themselves born from a womb, again resort to a womb? How, O lord of danavas, shall union bring one to heaven? Where purity is claimed through mere mud and ashes, what real purity can there be?

Verse 328 (padma.1.13.328)

viparītatamaṁ lokaṁ paśya dānava yādṛśam viṇmūtrasya kṛtotsarge śiśnāpāne tu śodhanam

Behold, O danava, how utterly topsy-turvy this world is. After excreting urine and feces, purification is performed only for the organ,

Verse 329 (padma.1.13.329)

bhukte vā bhojane rājankathaṁ nāpānaśiśnayoḥ

but, O king, why after eating a meal is purification not likewise performed for both the mouth and the organ?

Verse 330 (padma.1.13.330)

kriyate śodhanaṁ tadvadviparītā sthitistviyam yatra prakṣālanaṁ proktaṁ tatra tenaiva kurvate

As purification is performed for the one, so it is not for the other — this state of affairs is entirely contradictory. Wherever washing is prescribed, they perform it only in that selective manner.

Verse 331 (padma.1.13.331)

tārāṁ bṛṁhaspaterbhāryāṁ hṛtvā somaḥ purā gataḥ tasyāṁ jāto budhaḥ putro gururjagrāha tāṁ punaḥ

In ancient times, Soma carried off Tara, the wife of Brihaspati; a son, Budha, was born to her, and the guru took her back again.

Verse 332 (padma.1.13.332)

gautamasya muneḥ patnīmahalyāṁ nāma nāmataḥ agṛhṇāttāṁ svayaṁ śakraḥ paśya dharmo yathāvidhaḥ

The wife of the sage Gautama, named Ahalya — Shakra himself violated her. See, then, what dharma truly amounts to!

Verse 333 (padma.1.13.333)

etadanyacca jagati dṛśyate pāpadāyakam evaṁvidho yatra dharmaḥ paramārtho matastu kaḥ

This and much else besides is seen in the world, all bringing sin — where dharma is of such a kind, what ultimate truth can there be in it?'

Verse 334 (padma.1.13.334)

vadasva tvaṁ dānaveṁdra vada bhūyo vadāmi te gurostu gaditaṁ śrutvā paramārthānvitaṁ vacaḥ

'Speak, O lord of the danavas, speak, and I shall tell you still more.' Hearing the guru's words, which seemed laden with ultimate truth,

Verse 335 (padma.1.13.335)

jātakautūhalāstatra viviktāstu bhavārṇavāt dānavā ūcuḥ dīkṣayasva guro sarvānprapannānbhaktitaḥ sthitān

the danavas, filled with curiosity there, as if set apart from the ocean of worldly existence, said: 'O guru, initiate us all, who stand devoted and have taken refuge in you,

Verse 336 (padma.1.13.336)

yena vai na punarmohaṁ vrajāmastava śāsanāt suviraktāḥ sma saṁsāre śokamohapradāyini

so that, by your instruction, we may never again fall into delusion; we have become utterly detached from this world, which brings only grief and delusion.

Verse 337 (padma.1.13.337)

uddharasva guro sarvānkeśākarṣeṇa kūpataḥ kasya devasya śaraṇaṁ gacchāmo brāhmaṇottama

O guru, draw us all up from this well, even by the hair if need be. O best of brahmins, whose divine refuge should we seek?

Verse 338 (padma.1.13.338)

daivataṁ ca prapannānāṁ prakāśaya mahāmate smaraṇenopavāsena dhyānadhāraṇayā tathā

O great-minded one, reveal to us, who have taken refuge, that deity we should worship. By remembrance, by fasting, and likewise by meditation and concentration,

Verse 339 (padma.1.13.339)

pūjopahāre ca kṛte apavargastu labhyate viraktāssma kuṭuṁbe tu bhūyo nātra yatāmahe

and by offering worship, final liberation is attained. We have become detached from family life; we shall strive no further here.'

Verse 340 (padma.1.13.340)

evaṁ caiva guruśchannastairukto danupuṁgavaiḥ ciṁtayāmāsa tatkāryaṁ kathametatkaromyaham

Thus addressed by the sons of Danu, the disguised guru pondered: 'How am I to accomplish this task?

Verse 341 (padma.1.13.341)

kathamete mayā pāpāḥ kartavyā narakaukasaḥ viḍaṁbanācchruterbāhyāstrailokye hāsyakāriṇaḥ

How am I to make these ones sinners, dwellers destined for hell — cast, through deception, outside the Vedic revelation, objects of ridicule in the three worlds?'

Verse 342 (padma.1.13.342)

ityuktvā dhiṣaṇo rājaṁścintayāmāsa keśavam tasya tacciṁtitaṁ jñātvā māyāmohaṁ janārdanaḥ

O king, having thought thus, Dhishana (Brihaspati) meditated upon Keshava. Knowing what was troubling his mind, Janardana,

Verse 343 (padma.1.13.343)

samutpādya dadau tasya prāha cedaṁ bṛhaspatim māyāmohoyamakhilāṁstāndaityānmohayiṣyati

having brought forth Mayamoha (Delusion incarnate), gave him to Brihaspati and said this to him: 'This Mayamoha, together with you, shall delude all those daityas,

Verse 344 (padma.1.13.344)

bhavatā sahitaḥ sarvānvedamārgabahiṣkṛtān evamādiśya bhagavānaṁtarddhānaṁ jagāma ha

casting them out from the path of the Veda.' Having given this instruction, the Lord then vanished.

Verse 345 (padma.1.13.345)

tapasyabhiratānsotha māyāmoho gato'surān teṣāṁ samīpamāgatya bṛhaspatiruvāca ha

Then Mayamoha went to those asuras who were absorbed in austerity; approaching them, Brihaspati, in disguise, spoke —

Verse 346 (padma.1.13.346)

anugrahārthaṁ yuṣmākaṁ bhaktyā prītastvihāgataḥ yogī digambaro muṇḍo barhipatradharo hyayam

'For your blessing, moved by devotion and pleasure, this one has come here — a yogi, sky-clad, shaven-headed, bearing peacock feathers.'

Verse 347 (padma.1.13.347)

ityukte guruṇā paścānmāyāmohobravīdvacaḥ bho bho daityādhipatayaḥ prabrūta tapasi sthitāḥ

When the guru had spoken thus, Mayamoha then said: 'Ho, lords of the daityas, established in austerity, tell me —

Verse 348 (padma.1.13.348)

ehikārthaṁ tu pārakyaṁ tapasaḥ phalamicchatha dānavā ūcuḥ pārakyadharmalābhāya tapaścaryā hi no matā

do you desire the fruit of your austerity for this world, or for the world beyond?' The danavas said: 'Our practice of austerity is intended only for the sake of gaining dharma of the world beyond;

Verse 349 (padma.1.13.349)

asmābhiriyamārabdhā kiṁ vā tatra vivakṣitam digaṁbara uvāca kurudhvaṁ mama vākyāni yadi muktimabhīpsatha

this is what we have undertaken; what more is there to say?' The sky-clad one said: 'If you desire liberation, follow my words.

Verse 350 (padma.1.13.350)

ārhataṁ sarvametacca muktidvāramasaṁvṛtam dharmādvimukterarhoyaṁ naitasmādaparaḥ paraḥ

This entire Arhata teaching is the unobstructed door to liberation; this alone is worthy of the dharma of final release — nothing higher exists than this.

Verse 351 (padma.1.13.351)

atraivāvasthitāḥ svargaṁ muktiṁ cāpi gamiṣyatha evaṁprakārairbahubhirmuktidarśanavarjitaiḥ

Remaining fixed in this alone, you shall attain both heaven and liberation.' By many such statements, devoid of any true vision of liberation,

Verse 352 (padma.1.13.352)

māyāmohena te daityāḥ vedamārgabahiṣkṛtāḥ dharmāyaitadadharmāya sadetadasadityapi

Mayamoha thus cast those daityas out from the path of the Veda — saying 'this is for dharma, this for adharma,' 'this is real, this too is unreal,'

Verse 353 (padma.1.13.353)

vimuktaye tvidaṁ naitadvimuktiṁ saṁprayacchati paramārthoyamatyarthaṁ paramārtho na cāpyayam

'this is for liberation,' 'no, this does not grant liberation,' 'this indeed is the highest truth,' and yet 'this too is not the highest truth' —

Verse 354 (padma.1.13.354)

kāryametadakāryaṁ hi naitadetatsphuṭaṁ tvidam digvāsasāmayaṁ dharmo dharmoyaṁ bahuvāsasām

'this is to be done, this is not,' 'this is unclear, but this is not' — 'this is the dharma of the sky-clad ascetics, this the dharma of those who wear many garments' —

Verse 355 (padma.1.13.355)

ityanekārthavādāṁstu māyāmohena te yataḥ uktāstato'khilā daityāḥ svadharmāṁstyājitā nṛpa

O king, by such many contradictory statements did Mayamoha address them, and thereby all the daityas were made to abandon their own proper dharma.

Verse 356 (padma.1.13.356)

arhadhvaṁ māmakaṁ dharmaṁ māyāmohena te yataḥ uktāstamāśritā dharmamārhatāstena tebhavan

'Accept my dharma as worthy' — thus addressed by Mayamoha, and taking refuge in that teaching, they became known, on that very account, as Arhatas.

Verse 357 (padma.1.13.357)

trayīmārgaṁ samutsṛjya māyāmohena tesurāḥ kāritāstanmayā hyāsaṁstathānye tatprabodhitāḥ

Abandoning the path of the threefold Veda entirely, those asuras were made so by Mayamoha; and by them, in turn, others too were awakened to that same teaching.

Verse 358 (padma.1.13.358)

tairapyanye pare taiśca tairanyonyaistathāpare namo'rhate ceti sarve saṁgame sthiravādinaḥ

By them still others, and by those others yet more, thus one after another — all of them together became firm, proclaiming 'Homage to the Arhat!'

Verse 359 (padma.1.13.359)

alpairahobhiḥ saṁtyaktā tairdaityaiḥ prāyaśastrayī punaśca raktāṁbaradhṛnmāyāmoho jitekṣaṇaḥ

Within just a few days, the threefold Veda was, for the most part, entirely abandoned by those daityas. Then Mayamoha, now clad in red garments, his gaze subdued,

Verse 360 (padma.1.13.360)

sonyānapyasurāngatvā ūcenyanmadhurākṣaram svargārthaṁ yadi vo vāñchā nirvāṇārthāya vā punaḥ

went to yet other asuras, and spoke to them in other sweet words: 'If your desire is for heaven, or again for the sake of nirvana,

Verse 361 (padma.1.13.361)

tadalaṁ paśughātādi duṣṭadharmairnibodhata vijñānamayametadvai tvaśeṣamadhigacchata

then have done with animal-slaughter and such corrupt practices — understand this. All this is made of true knowledge — attain it in its entirety.

Verse 362 (padma.1.13.362)

budhyadhvaṁ me vacaḥ samyagbudhairevamihoditam jagadetadanādhāraṁ bhrāṁtijñānānutatparam

Understand my words rightly, as the wise have declared here. This world is without any real support, intent only on delusive knowledge;

Verse 363 (padma.1.13.363)

rāgādiduṣṭamatyarthaṁ bhrāmyate bhavasaṁkaṭe nānāprakāraṁ vacanaṁ sa teṣāṁ muktiyojitam

utterly corrupted by passion and the like, it wanders in the perilous round of existence.' He spoke to them in many ways, as if leading them toward liberation.

Verse 364 (padma.1.13.364)

tathā tathāvadaddharmaṁ tatyajuste yathāyathā kecidviniṁdāṁ vedānāṁ devānāmapare nṛpa

In whatever way he spoke of dharma, in just that way they abandoned it; O king, some began to revile the Vedas, others the gods,

Verse 365 (padma.1.13.365)

yajñakarmakalāpasya tathā cānye dvijanmanām naitadyuktisahaṁ vākyaṁ hiṁsā dharmāya jāyate

and others still the whole body of sacrificial rites, and others the twice-born — 'This statement cannot withstand reason, that violence should give rise to dharma.

Verse 366 (padma.1.13.366)

havīṁṣyanaladagdhāni phalānyarhaṁti kovidāḥ nihatasya paśoryajñe svargaprāptiryadīṣyate

How can offerings burned in fire, as the learned themselves say, bring any fruit? If it is held that an animal slain in sacrifice attains heaven,

Verse 367 (padma.1.13.367)

svapitā yajamānena kiṁ vā tatra na hanyate tṛptaye jāyate puṁso bhuktamanyena cedyadi

then why does the sacrificer not also slay his own father there? If, when one man eats, another's hunger is thereby satisfied,

Verse 368 (padma.1.13.368)

dadyācchrāddhaṁ pravasato na vaheyuḥ pravāsinaḥ yajñairanekairdevatvamavāpyeṁdreṇa bhujyate

then simply send the shraddha-offering to the traveler, and travelers need not carry provisions at all.' Godhood, gained through many sacrifices, is in the end enjoyed only by Indra —

Verse 369 (padma.1.13.369)

śamyādi yadi cetkāṣṭhaṁ tadvaraṁ patrabhukpaśuḥ janā śraddheyamityetadavagamya tu tadvacaḥ

'and if the shami-wood merely matters, then a leaf-eating animal is better still.' People, taking this teaching to be trustworthy,

Verse 370 (padma.1.13.370)

upekṣya śreyase vākyaṁ rocatāṁ yanmayeritam na hyāptavādā nabhaso nipataṁti mahāsurāḥ

set aside the teaching meant for their true good and found what I declared pleasing instead — for, O great asuras, trustworthy sayings do not simply fall from the sky.

Verse 371 (padma.1.13.371)

yuktimadvacanaṁ grāhyaṁ mayānyaiśca bhavadvidhaiḥ dānavā ūcuḥ tatvavāde vayaṁ sarve prapannāstava bhaktitaḥ

A reasoned statement is what people like me, and like you, ought to accept.' The danavas said: 'In this true doctrine, we have all taken refuge in you, out of devotion.

Verse 372 (padma.1.13.372)

kuruṣvānugrahaṁ cādya prasannosi yadi prabho saṁbhārānāharāmodya dīkṣāyogyāṁśca sarvaśaḥ

O Lord, if you are pleased, show us your grace today; we shall bring all the materials fitting for our initiation,

Verse 373 (padma.1.13.373)

prasādāttava yenāśu mokṣo hastagato bhavet tatastānabravītsarvānmāyāmohosurāṁstadā

so that, through your grace, liberation may swiftly come into our very hands.' Then Mayamoha spoke to all those asuras —

Verse 374 (padma.1.13.374)

prapannaḥ śāsanaṁ hyeṣa madīyo gururagryadhīḥ dīkṣāṁ dāsyati yuṣmākaṁ nideśānmama sattamaḥ

'This foremost-minded guru of mine has accepted my teaching; this most excellent one shall give you initiation at my command —

Verse 375 (padma.1.13.375)

etāndīkṣaya bho brahmanvacanānmama putrakān gate mohe dānavāste bhārgavaṁ vākyamabruvan

initiate these, my children, O brahmin.' When Mayamoha had gone, those danavas spoke these words to the one in Bhargava's (Shukra's) disguise —

Verse 376 (padma.1.13.376)

dehi dīkṣāṁ mahābhāga sarvasaṁsāramocanīm tathetyāhośanā daityāngacchāmo narmadāmanu

'O illustrious one, grant us that initiation which frees one from the whole of worldly existence.' 'So be it,' said Ushanas to the daityas — 'let us go along the Narmada.

Verse 377 (padma.1.13.377)

bhobhostyajata vāsāṁsi dīkṣāṁ kārayitāsmi vaḥ evaṁ te dānavā bhīṣma bhṛgurūpeṇa dhīmatā

Ho, ho, cast off your garments — I shall have you initiated.' Thus, O Bhishma, that wise one in Bhrigu's form,

Verse 378 (padma.1.13.378)

āṁgirasena te tatra kṛtā digvāsasosurāḥ barhipicchadhvajaṁ teṣāṁ guṁjikā cārumālikāṁ

the son of Angiras, there made those asuras into sky-clad ascetics. He gave them a banner of peacock feathers, and lovely garlands of gunja-berries,

Verse 379 (padma.1.13.379)

datvā cakāra teṣāṁ tu śiraso luṁcanaṁ tataḥ keśasyotpāṭanaṁ caiva paramaṁ dharmasādhanam

and then had the hair plucked out from their heads. 'The plucking out of the hair is indeed the supreme means of accomplishing dharma —

Verse 380 (padma.1.13.380)

dhanānāmīśvaro devo dhanadaḥ keśaluṁcanāt siddhiṁ paramikāṁ prāptāḥ sadā veṣasya dhāraṇāt

the god who is lord of riches, Dhanada (Kubera), attained his very position through hair-plucking. By ever wearing this garb alone, the highest perfection is attained;

Verse 381 (padma.1.13.381)

nityatvaṁ labhyate hyevaṁ purā prāhārhataḥ svayam vālotpāṭena devatvaṁ mānuṣairlabhyate tviha

Eternity indeed is thus obtained — so the Arhat himself declared of old. By plucking out the hair, godhood is here attained by men.

Verse 382 (padma.1.13.382)

kiṁ na kurvīta tattasmānmahāpuṇyapradaṁ yataḥ manoratho hi devānāṁ loke vai mānuṣe kadā

Then why would one not do this, since it grants such great merit? For it is even the gods' own heartfelt wish — when, in the human world,

Verse 383 (padma.1.13.383)

asminsyādbhārate varṣe janmanaḥ śrāvake kule tapasā yuñjmahesmānvai keśotpāṭanapūrvakam

might one be born, here in the land of Bharata, into a family of Shravakas! Come, let us join ourselves to this austerity, beginning with the plucking of the hair.'

Verse 384 (padma.1.13.384)

tīrthaṁkarāścaturviṁśattathā taistu puraskṛtāḥ chāyākṛtaṁ phaṇīṁdreṇa dhyānamārgapradarśakam

The twenty-four Tirthankaras, honored by them — one shaded by the lord of serpents — showing the path of meditation,

Verse 385 (padma.1.13.385)

stuvantaṁ maṁtravādena svargo hastagatorhataṁ mokṣo vā bhavitā nūnaṁ vicāraḥ kotra kathyate

praising them with recitation of mantras — 'through the Arhat, heaven has come into our very hands, or surely liberation shall be ours — what doubt remains to be spoken of here?'

Verse 386 (padma.1.13.386)

kadā syāmarṣayo bhūtvā sūryāgnisamatejasaḥ japtvā virāgiṇaścaivamanupaṁcāṁgakaṁ tathā

'When shall we become sages of splendor equal to sun and fire, detached, reciting the vows of this five-limbed observance?

Verse 387 (padma.1.13.387)

tathā tapasyatāṁ mṛtyuṁ gatānāṁ kālaparyayāt pāṣāṇena śirobhagnaṁ bhavate puṇyakarmaṇām

So too, for those of meritorious deeds who, while practicing such austerity, meet death in the course of time — even having the head broken by a stone is held to be auspicious.

Verse 388 (padma.1.13.388)

araṇye nirjane vāsaḥkadā vai bhavitā hi naḥ karṇajapyaṁ śrāvakāśca kariṣyaṁti samāhitāḥ

When indeed shall we dwell in a lonely forest?' And the Shravakas, composed in mind, will perform whispered recitation into the ear.

Verse 389 (padma.1.13.389)

bhobho ṛṣe na gaṁtavyaṁ mokṣamārgī yato bhavān labdhāni yāni sthānāni bhūyovṛttikarāṇi ca

'Ho, O sage, there is no need to go elsewhere, since you yourself already walk the path of liberation. Whatever positions have been attained, which bring further worldly livelihood,

Verse 390 (padma.1.13.390)

tyājyāni tena caitāni satyameva vaco hi naḥ asmadīyena tapasā niyamairvividhaistathā

these are to be abandoned — this indeed is our true teaching. By our own austerity, and by various vows besides,

Verse 391 (padma.1.13.391)

vrajadhvaṁ cottamaṁ sthānaṁ mokṣamārgaṁ ca yaṁ budhāḥ viṁdaṁti bhaktibhāvena tapoyuktāstapasvinaḥ

go forth to that supreme abode, that path of liberation, which the wise attain through devotion, ascetics joined with austerity.

Verse 392 (padma.1.13.392)

akṣeṣu nigraho yatra dayābhūteṣu sarvadā tattapodharmamityuktaṁ sarvā cānyā viḍaṁbanā

Where there is restraint over the senses, and compassion toward all beings always — that alone is called the true dharma of austerity; all else is mere pretense.

Verse 393 (padma.1.13.393)

jñātvaitadbhavatā sādhyaṁ gaṁtavyaṁ paramaṁ padam yāṁ vai tīrthaṁkarā yātā yāṁ gatiṁ yogino gatāḥ

Knowing this, you must attain that supreme state — the state to which the Tirthankaras went, that destination which the yogis reached.'

Verse 394 (padma.1.13.394)

evaṁ vai devatāḥ pūrvaṁ vidyādharamahoragāḥ manorathābhilāṣāṁste ciṁtayaṁto divāniśam

In just this way, formerly, the gods, vidyadharas, and great serpents too, pondering these same longings day and night —

Verse 395 (padma.1.13.395)

yadyeṣaṇā vai yuṣmākaṁ saṁsāraviratau kṛtā parityajadhvaṁ dārāṇi svargamārgārgalāni ca

'If your desire is truly set on release from worldly existence, then abandon your wives, who are but bolts barring the path to heaven.

Verse 396 (padma.1.13.396)

yasyāṁ yonau pitā yātastāṁ yoniṁ sevase katham ātmamāṁsopamaṁ māṁsaṁ kathaṁ khādaṁti jaṁtavaḥ

That very womb into which your own father once went — how can you resort to that same womb? How can creatures eat flesh, comparable to their own flesh?'

Verse 397 (padma.1.13.397)

tataste dānavā bhīṣmā ūcuḥ sarve guruṁ vacaḥ dīkṣasva no mahābhāga bhrūṇakānagrataḥ sthitān

O Bhishma, then all those danavas spoke this word to their guru: 'O illustrious one, initiate us all, standing before you like unformed infants.'

Verse 398 (padma.1.13.398)

tathā kṛtvā sa tānāha samayena purohitaḥ praṇāmo nānyadeveṣu kartavyo vaḥ kadācana

Having done so, the priest bound them under a vow and said: 'You must never bow down to any other god.

Verse 399 (padma.1.13.399)

ekasthāne yadā bhaktaṁ bhoktavyaṁ karasaṁpuṭe tatrasthāne sthitaṁ toyaṁ keśakīṭavivarjitam

Whenever food is to be taken, it must be eaten in one place, from cupped hands; and the water kept there must be free of hair and insects.

Verse 400 (padma.1.13.400)

tulyaṁ priyāpriyaṁ kāryaṁ nānyadṛṣṭihataṁ kvacit bhoktavyametena vibho ācāreṇa tathā kuru

The pleasant and unpleasant are to be treated alike; food seen by another's eyes must never be taken. O lord, food is to be eaten only by this observance — do accordingly.

Verse 401 (padma.1.13.401)

Remain thus united with one another, and in this way you shall become sharers in liberation.' Having said this, and having thus bound those sons of Danu to these vows,

Verse 402 (padma.1.13.402)

jagāma dhiṣaṇo rājandevalokaṁ divaukasām ācacakṣe sa tatsarvaṁ dānavānāṁ ca kāritam

O king, Dhishana (Brihaspati) then went to the world of the gods, and related to them all that he had accomplished among the danavas.

Verse 403 (padma.1.13.403)

tataste tvasurā jagmurnarmadāmabhito vasan dṛṣṭvā tāndānavāṁstatra prahlādena vinā kṛtān

Then those asuras went and settled around the Narmada. Seeing those danavas there, thus transformed, apart from Prahlada,

Verse 404 (padma.1.13.404)

devarājastato hṛṣṭo namuciṁ prāha vai vacaḥ hiraṇyākṣaṁ yajñahanaṁ dharmaghnaṁ vedaniṁdakam

the king of the gods, rejoicing, spoke this word to Namuchi — Hiranyaksha, destroyer of sacrifice, slayer of dharma, reviler of the Vedas,

Verse 405 (padma.1.13.405)

rākṣasaṁ krūrakarmāṇaṁ praghasaṁ vighasaṁ tathā muciṁ caiva tathā bāṇaṁ virocanamathāpi vā

the cruel-deeded Rakshasa, and Praghasa and Vighasa, Muchi, Bana, and Virochana too,

Verse 406 (padma.1.13.406)

mahiṣākṣaṁ bāṣkalaṁ ca pracaṁḍaṁ caṁḍakaṁ tathā rocamānaṁ tathātyugraṁ suṣeṇaṁ dānavottamam

Mahishaksha, Bashkala, Prachanda, Chandaka, Rochamana, and the exceedingly fierce Sushena — these foremost danavas,

Verse 407 (padma.1.13.407)

etāndṛṣṭvā tathā cānyāndānaveṁdrānathābravīt indra uvāca dānaveṁdrāḥ purā jātāḥ kṛtaṁ rājyaṁ triviṣṭape

seeing these and other lords of the danavas thus, he spoke. Indra said: 'Lords of the danavas, you were born long ago, and once ruled even the three worlds;

Verse 408 (padma.1.13.408)

idānīṁ kathamevedaṁ vrataṁ vedavilopakam bhavadbhiḥ kartumārabdhaṁ nagnamuṁḍikamaṁḍalu

how then have you now taken up this vow that destroys the Veda — going naked, shaven-headed, bearing a water-pot,

Verse 409 (padma.1.13.409)

mayūradhvajadhāritvaṁ kathaṁ caiveha tiṣṭhatha dānavā ūcuḥ tyaktaḥ sarvāsurabhāva ṛṣidharme vayaṁ sthitāḥ

and carrying a peacock banner — why do you remain here like this?' The danavas said: 'We have wholly abandoned our asura nature; we are now established in the dharma of sages.

Verse 410 (padma.1.13.410)

dharmavṛddhikaraṁ karma carāmaḥ sarvajaṁtuṣu trailokyarājyamakhilaṁ bhuṁkṣva śakra vrajasva ca

We perform only such deeds, toward all creatures, as increase dharma. Enjoy, O Shakra, the entire sovereignty of the three worlds, and go your way.'

Verse 411 (padma.1.13.411)

tatheti coktvā maghavā punaryātastriviṣṭapam evaṁ te mohitāḥ sarve bhīṣma devapurodhasā

Saying 'so be it,' Maghavan (Indra) returned once more to heaven. Thus, O Bhishma, were all of them deluded by the priest of the gods.

Verse 412 (padma.1.13.412)

narmadā saritaṁ prāpya sthitā dānavasattamāḥ jñātvā śukreṇa te sarve vṛttāṁtamanubodhitāḥ

Those foremost danavas, having reached the river Narmada, settled there; and learning the whole account from Shukra, they all became fully aware of the truth,

Verse 413 (padma.1.13.413)

tadā trailokyaharaṇe cakruḥ krūrāṁ punarmatim

and then they resolved once more, with cruel intent, upon seizing the three worlds.
