Chapter 15All chaptersChapter 17

Verse 1 (padma.1.16.1)

bhīṣma uvāca yadetatkathitaṁ brahmaṁstīrthamāhātmyamuttamam kamalasyābhipātena tīrthaṁ jātaṁ dharātale

Bhishma said: O brahmin, this supreme glory of the tirtha you have told me of — the tirtha that came into being upon the earth through the falling of the lotus —

Verse 2 (padma.1.16.2)

tatrasthena bhagavatā viṣṇunā śaṁkareṇa ca yatkṛtaṁ muniśārdūla tatsarvaṁ parikīrttaya

whatever was done there by the Lord, by Vishnu and by Shankara — O tiger among sages, relate all of that to me.

Verse 3 (padma.1.16.3)

kathaṁ yajño hi devena vibhunā tatra kāritaḥ ke sadasyā ṛtvijaśca brāhmaṇāḥ ke samāgatāḥ

How indeed was the sacrifice performed there by that all-powerful god? Who were the assessors and priests, and which brahmins were assembled there?

Verse 4 (padma.1.16.4)

ke bhāgāstasya yajñasya kiṁ dravyaṁ kā cadakṣiṇā kā vedī kiṁ pramāṇaṁ ca kṛtaṁ tatra viraṁcinā

What were the portions of that sacrifice, what materials, and what sacrificial fee? What altar, and by what measure, did Virinchi make it?

Verse 5 (padma.1.16.5)

yo yājyaḥ sarvadevānāṁ vedaiḥ sarvatra paṭhyate kaṁ ca kāmamabhidhyāyanvedhā yajñaṁ cakāra ha

He who is worthy of sacrifice by all the gods, who is recited everywhere in the Vedas — with what desire in mind did the Creator perform this sacrifice?

Verse 6 (padma.1.16.6)

yathāsau devadeveśo hyajaraścāmaraśca ha tathā caivākṣayaḥ svargastasya devasya dṛśyate

Just as that Lord of the gods of gods is himself ageless and immortal, so too the heaven of that god is seen to be imperishable.

Verse 7 (padma.1.16.7)

anyeṣāṁ caiva devānāṁ dattaḥ svargo mahātmanā agnihotrārthamutpannā vedā oṣadhayastathā

And heaven was granted to the other gods too by that great soul. For the sake of the Agnihotra, the Vedas were produced, and likewise the herbs,

Verse 8 (padma.1.16.8)

ye cānye paśavo bhūmau sarve te yajñakāraṇāt sṛṣṭā bhagavatānena ityeṣā vaidikī śrutiḥ

and whatever other cattle exist upon the earth, all of them were created by this Lord for the sake of sacrifice — this is the Vedic teaching.

Verse 9 (padma.1.16.9)

tadatra kautukaṁ mahyaṁ śrutvedaṁ tava bhāṣitam yaṁ kāmamadhikṛtyaikaṁ yatphalaṁ yāṁ ca bhāvanāṁ

Hearing this account of yours, I have great curiosity here — with what single desire in mind, for what fruit, and with what intention,

Verse 10 (padma.1.16.10)

kṛtaścānena vai yajñaḥ sarvaṁ śaṁsitumarhasi śatarūpā ca yā nārī sāvitrī sā tvihocyate

this sacrifice was performed by him — you ought to tell me all of this. And that woman, Shatarupa, who is here called Savitri —

Verse 11 (padma.1.16.11)

bhāryā sā brahmaṇaḥ proktāḥ ṛṣīṇāṁ jananī ca sā pulastyādyānmunīnsapta dakṣādyāṁstu prajāpatīn

she is declared to be Brahma's wife, and she herself is the mother of the sages. The seven sages beginning with Pulastya, the Prajapatis beginning with Daksha,

Verse 12 (padma.1.16.12)

svāyaṁbhuvādīṁśca manūnsāvitrī samajījanat dharmapatnīṁ tu tāṁ brahmā putriṇīṁ brahmaṇaḥ priyaḥ

and the Manus beginning with Svayambhuva, Savitri herself gave birth to. Yet Brahma, to whom his own progeny were dear,

Verse 13 (padma.1.16.13)

pativratāṁ mahābhāgāṁ suvratāṁ cāruhāsinīṁ kathaṁ satīṁ parityajya bhāryāmanyāmaviṁdata

how did he, abandoning that devoted, illustrious, virtuous, sweetly smiling wife, obtain another wife?

Verse 14 (padma.1.16.14)

kiṁ nāmnī kiṁ samācārā kasya sā tanayā vibhoḥ kva sā dṛṣṭā hi devena kena cāsya pradarśitā

What was her name, what was her conduct, whose daughter was she, of what mighty one? Where indeed was she seen by the god, and by whom was she shown to him?

Verse 15 (padma.1.16.15)

kiṁ rūpā sā tu deveśī dṛṣṭā cittavimohinī yāṁ tu dṛṣṭvā sa deveśaḥ kāmasya vaśameyivān

Of what form was that goddess-like one, whose sight bewildered the mind — she, seeing whom, that Lord of gods fell under the sway of desire?

Verse 16 (padma.1.16.16)

varṇato rūpataścaiva sāvitryāstvadhikā mune yā mohitavatī devaṁ sarvalokeśvaraṁ vibhum

O sage, in complexion and form, was she superior even to Savitri — she who bewildered that mighty god, lord of all the worlds?

Verse 17 (padma.1.16.17)

yathā gṛhītavāndevo nārīṁ tāṁ lokasuṁdarīṁ yathā pravṛtto yajñosau tathā sarvaṁ prakīrtaya

How did the god take that woman, most beautiful in all the world? And how did that sacrifice proceed? Relate all of this.

Verse 18 (padma.1.16.18)

tāṁ dṛṣṭvā brahmaṇaḥ pārśve sāvitrī kiṁ cakāra ha sāvitryāṁ tu tadā brahmā kāṁ tu vṛttimavarttata

Seeing her at Brahma's side, what did Savitri do then? And what conduct did Brahma then adopt toward Savitri?

Verse 19 (padma.1.16.19)

sannidhau kāni vākyāni sāvitrī brahmaṇā tadā uktāpyuktavatī bhūyaḥ sarvaṁ śaṁsitumarhasi

What words did Savitri, in her presence, then speak to Brahma, and what did he reply — you ought to tell me all of this.

Verse 20 (padma.1.16.20)

kiṁ kṛtaṁ tatra yuṣmābhiḥ kopo vātha kṣamāpi vā yatkṛtaṁ tatra yaddṛṣṭaṁ yattavoktaṁ mayā tviha

What was done there by all of you — was there anger, or was there also forgiveness? Whatever was done there, whatever was seen, and whatever you have told me here,

Verse 21 (padma.1.16.21)

vistareṇeha sarvāṇi karmāṇi parameṣṭhinaḥ śrotumicchāmyaśeṣeṇa vidheryajñavidhiṁ paraṁ

I wish to hear here, in full detail, all the deeds of the Supreme Lord — the entire supreme sacrificial procedure of the Creator.

Verse 22 (padma.1.16.22)

karmaṇāmānupūrvyaṁ ca prāraṁbho hotrameva ca hoturbhakṣo yathā'cāpi prathamā kasya kāritā

The proper order of the rites, their beginning, and the offering itself; how the priest's portion was arranged, and for whom the first oblation was made —

Verse 23 (padma.1.16.23)

kathaṁ ca bhagavānviṣṇuḥ sāhāyyaṁ kena kīdṛśaṁ amarairvā kṛtaṁ yacca tadbhavānvaktumarhati

and how the Lord Vishnu gave assistance, by what means, and of what kind; and whatever was done by the immortals — you ought to tell me this.

Verse 24 (padma.1.16.24)

devalokaṁ parityajya kathaṁ martyamupāgataḥ gārhapatyaṁ ca vidhinā anvāhāryaṁ ca dakṣiṇam

How did he leave the world of the gods and come to the mortal world? And the Garhapatya fire according to rule, and the southern Anvaharya fire,

Verse 25 (padma.1.16.25)

agnimāhavanīyaṁ ca vedīṁ caiva tathā sruvam prokṣaṇīyaṁ srucaṁ caiva āvabhṛthyaṁ tathaiva ca

the Ahavaniya fire, and the altar likewise, and the sruva ladle; the sprinkling vessel and the sruc ladle too, and likewise the concluding bath —

Verse 26 (padma.1.16.26)

agnīṁstrīṁśca yathā cakre havyabhāgavahānhi vai havyādāṁśca surāṁścakre kavyādāṁśca pitṝnapi

how did he make the three fires, the bearers of the portions of the offering? And he made the gods, eaters of the offering, and the ancestors likewise, eaters of the ancestral offering.

Verse 27 (padma.1.16.27)

bhāgārthaṁ yajñavidhinā ye yajñā yajñakarmaṇi yūpānsamitkuśaṁ somaṁ pavitraṁ paridhīnapi

For the sake of their portions, by the rule of sacrifice, whatever sacrificial elements exist in the ritual work — the sacrificial post, kindling wood, kusha grass, soma, the purifying cloth, and the enclosing sticks too,

Verse 28 (padma.1.16.28)

yajñiyāni ca dravyāṇi yathā brahmā cakāra ha vibabhrāja purā yaśca pārameṣṭhyena karmaṇā

and all the materials fit for sacrifice — how did Brahma make them? And he who shone forth of old through his supreme ritual act —

Verse 29 (padma.1.16.29)

kṣaṇā nimeṣāḥ kāṣṭhāśca kalāstraikālyameva ca muhūrtāstithayo māsā dinaṁ saṁvatsarastathā

moments, instants, kashthas, kalas, and the threefold time of past, present, and future; muhurtas, lunar days, months, the day, and the year as well,

Verse 30 (padma.1.16.30)

Verse 31 (padma.1.16.31)

trayo varṇāstrayo lokāstraividyaṁ pāvakāstrayaḥ traikālyaṁ trīṇi karmāṇi trayo varṇāstrayo guṇāḥ

the three primary colors, the three worlds, the threefold knowledge, the three sacred fires; the three times, the three kinds of action, and the three gunas —

Verse 32 (padma.1.16.32)

sṛṣṭā lokāḥ parāḥ sraṣṭrā ye cānyenalpacetasā yā gatirdharmayuktānāṁ yā gatiḥ pāpakarmaṇāṁ

the supreme worlds created by the Creator, and those lesser worlds created by some other of little wisdom; the destiny of those joined with dharma, the destiny of those of sinful deeds —

Verse 33 (padma.1.16.33)

cāturvarṇyasya prabhavaścāturvarṇyasya rakṣitā caturvidyasya yo vettā caturāśramasaṁśrayaḥ

the origin of the four social orders, and their protector; the knower of the fourfold knowledge, the resort of the four ashramas —

Verse 34 (padma.1.16.34)

Verse 35 (padma.1.16.35)

he who is the bridge of the bridges of the worlds, the sacred one of sacred deeds; the object of knowledge for knowers of the Veda, the lord of those whose very nature is power —

Verse 36 (padma.1.16.36)

asubhūtaśca bhūtānāmagnibhūtognivarcasām manuṣyāṇāṁ manobhūtastapobhūtastapasvinām

the very life-breath of living beings, the very fire-essence of those of fiery splendor; the very mind-essence of men, the very austerity-essence of ascetics —

vinayo nayavṛttīnāṁ tejastejasvināmapi ityetatsarvamakhilānsṛjanlokapitāmahaḥ

the very discipline of those who follow right conduct, and the very splendor of the splendorous too — creating all this, and the entire universe, that Grandsire of the worlds,

Verse 38 (padma.1.16.38)

yajñādgatiṁ kāmanvaicchatkathaṁ yajñe matiḥ kṛtā eṣa me saṁśayo brahmanneṣa me saṁśayaḥ paraḥ

what destiny, what desire did he seek through sacrifice, and how was his mind turned toward sacrifice? This is my doubt, O brahmin — this is my chief doubt.

Verse 39 (padma.1.16.39)

āścaryaḥ paramo brahmā devairdaityaiśca paṭhyate karmaṇāścaryabhūtopi tattvataḥ sa ihocyate

Brahma is spoken of, by gods and daityas alike, as the supreme wonder; though a being of wonder in his deeds, he is here declared, in truth, to be something more still.'

the mantra, the sacrifice itself, the oblation, the portion belonging to fire, and the very being that arises from it; the one who eats the first portion, who eats the oblation, of auspicious flame, with weapon raised —

Verse 48 (padma.1.16.48)

āhurvedavido viprā yo yajñaḥ śāśvataḥ prabhuḥ yāṁ pṛcchasi mahārāja puṇyāṁ divyāmimāṁ kathāṁ

thus do brahmins who know the Veda declare him, this eternal Lord who is himself sacrifice. This sacred and divine account which you ask of, O great king,

Verse 49 (padma.1.16.49)

the greatly majestic Sanatkumara, the great soul Manu, the Lord Prajapati, and that ancient god himself — of splendor equal to blazing Vaishvanara, thus performed that sacrifice.

Verse 52 (padma.1.16.52)

Formerly, in the hollow of that lotus born from Vishnu, while he lay sleeping, at Pushkara, where the gods and hosts of sages came into being,

Verse 53 (padma.1.16.53)

Verse 56 (padma.1.16.56)

Verse 57 (padma.1.16.57)

clarified butter his nose, the sruva his snout, the roar of the Sama chant his great voice; made of truth and dharma, glorious, honored by his ritual valor,

'Here indeed nothing has yet been done — I have not yet decorated the doorway; the ornamental designs on the wall, the auspicious svastika-marks in the courtyard —

Verse 116 (padma.1.16.116)

prakṣālanaṁ ca bhāṁḍānāṁ na kṛtaṁ kimapi tviha lakṣmīradyāpi nāyātā patnīnārāyaṇasya yā

and the cleaning of the vessels has not been done at all here yet. And even today, Lakshmi, the wife of Narayana, has not yet arrived;

Verse 117 (padma.1.16.117)

agneḥ patnī tathā svāhā dhūmrorṇā tu yamasya tu vāruṇī vai tathā gaurī vāyorvai suprabhā tathā

nor has Svaha, the wife of Agni, come; nor Dhumrorna, the wife of Yama; nor Varuni, the wife of Varuna; nor Gauri; nor Suprabha, wife of Vayu —

Verse 118 (padma.1.16.118)

ṛddhirvaiśravaṇī bhāryā śambhorgaurī jagatpriyā medhā śraddhā vibhūtiśca anasūyā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā

nor Riddhi, the wife of Vaishravana; nor Gauri, wife of Shambhu, dear to the world; nor Medha, Shraddha, Vibhuti, Anasuya, Dhriti, and Kshama —

Verse 119 (padma.1.16.119)

gaṁgā sarasvatī caiva nādyā yātāśca kanyakāḥ iṁdrāṇī caṁdrapatnī tu rohiṇī śaśinaḥ priyāḥ

nor Ganga, nor Sarasvati, nor the other river-maidens have come yet; nor Indrani; nor Rohini, the beloved wife of the moon —

Verse 120 (padma.1.16.120)

aruṁdhatī vasiṣṭhasya saptarṣīṇāṁ ca yāḥ striyaḥ anasūyātripatnī ca tathānyāḥ pramadā iha

nor Arundhati, wife of Vasishtha, and the wives of the seven sages; nor Anasuya, wife of Atri, and the other women here —

Verse 121 (padma.1.16.121)

vadhvo duhitaraścaiva sakhyo bhaginikāstathā nādyāgatāstu tāḥ sarvā ahaṁ tāvatsthitā ciraṁ

daughters-in-law, and daughters, and friends, and sisters — none of them have come yet today; and so I have remained waiting here.

Verse 122 (padma.1.16.122)

nāhamekākinī yāsye yāvannāyāṁti tā striyaḥ brūhi gatvā viraṁciṁ tu tiṣṭha tāvanmuhūrtakam

I shall not go alone until those women arrive. Go and tell Virinchi: wait for just a short while;

Verse 123 (padma.1.16.123)

sarvābhiḥ sahitā cāhamāgacchāmi tvarānvitā sarvaiḥ parivṛtaḥ śobhāṁ devaiḥ saha mahāmate

I shall come, together with all of them, hastening. Surrounded by all these goddesses, O great-minded one,

Verse 124 (padma.1.16.124)

bhavānprāpnoti paramāṁ tathāhaṁ tu na saṁśayaḥ vadamānāṁ tathādhvaryustyaktvā brahmāṇamāgataḥ

you shall attain supreme splendor, and I too — without doubt.' While she was still speaking thus, the Adhvaryu left her,

Verse 125 (padma.1.16.125)

sāvitrī vyākulā deva prasaktā gṛhakarmāṇi sakhyo nābhyāgatā yāvattāvannāgamanaṁ mama

and came back to Brahma: 'O god, Savitri is occupied and engrossed in household tasks. Until my friends have come, there shall be no coming on my part' —

Verse 126 (padma.1.16.126)

evamuktosmi vai deva kālaścāpyativarttate yattedya rucitaṁ tāvattatkuruṣva pitāmaha

thus I was addressed indeed, O god. And the proper time is also passing. Whatever pleases you now, do that, O Grandsire.'

Verse 127 (padma.1.16.127)

evamuktastadā brahmā kiṁcitkopasamanvitaḥ patnīṁ cānyāṁ madarthe vai śīghraṁ śakra ihānaya

Thus addressed, Brahma, then somewhat filled with anger, said: 'O Shakra, bring here quickly, for my sake, another wife —

Verse 128 (padma.1.16.128)

yathā pravartate yajñaḥ kālahīno na jāyate tathā śīghraṁ vidhitsva tvaṁ nārīṁ kāṁcidupānaya

so that the sacrifice may proceed and not fail for want of proper time; arrange this swiftly — bring some woman here.

Verse 129 (padma.1.16.129)

yāvadyajñasamāptirme varṇe tvāṁ mā kṛthā manaḥ bhūyopi tāṁ pramokṣyāmi samāptau tu kratoriha

Until the completion of my sacrifice, do not set your heart on her caste. I shall release her again once this sacrifice is completed here.'

Verse 130 (padma.1.16.130)

evamuktastadā śakro gatvā sarvaṁ dharātalaṁ striyo dṛṣṭāśca yāstena sarvāḥ paraparigrahāḥ

Thus addressed, Shakra then went over the entire surface of the earth; and whatever women he saw were all already possessed by another.

Verse 131 (padma.1.16.131)

ābhīrakanyā rūpāḍhyā sunāsā cārulocanā na devī na ca gaṁdharvī nāsurī na ca pannagī

Then he saw a cowherd girl, rich in beauty, of fine nose and lovely eyes — neither a goddess, nor a gandharvi, nor an asura woman, nor a serpent-woman,

Verse 132 (padma.1.16.132)

na cāsti tādṛśī kanyā yādṛśī sā varāṁganā dadarśa tāṁ sucārvaṁgīṁ śriyaṁ devīmivāparām

and there existed no maiden like that fine-formed woman. He beheld her, of lovely limbs, like a second goddess Shri,

Verse 133 (padma.1.16.133)

saṁkṣipantīṁ manovṛtti vibhavaṁ rūpasaṁpadā yadyattu vastusauṁdaryādviśiṣṭaṁ labhyate kvacit

who captivated the mind's very inclination through the splendor of her beauty. Whatever is exceptional among beautiful things anywhere,

Verse 134 (padma.1.16.134)

tattaccharīrasaṁlagnaṁ tanvaṁgyā dadṛśe varam tāṁ dṛṣṭvā ciṁtayāmāsa yadyeṣā kanyakā bhavet

all of that he saw joined together, in its best form, in that slender-limbed woman's body. Seeing her, he thought: 'If this maiden,

Verse 135 (padma.1.16.135)

tanmattaḥ kṛtapuṇyonyo na devo bhuvi vidyate yoṣidratnamidaṁ seyaṁ sadbhāgyāyāṁ pitāmahaḥ

then no other god upon earth would be more blessed than he. This is indeed a jewel among women — the Grandsire is truly fortunate.

Verse 136 (padma.1.16.136)

sarāgo yadi vā syāttu saphalastveṣa me śramaḥ nīlābhra kanakāṁbhoja vidrumābhāṁ dadarśa tāṁ

If indeed he becomes enamored of her, then this effort of mine shall bear fruit.' He saw her, resembling a dark cloud, gold, a lotus, and coral,

Verse 137 (padma.1.16.137)

tviṣaṁ saṁbibhratīmaṁgaiḥ keśagaṁḍe kṣaṇādharaiḥ manmathāśokavṛkṣasya prodbhinnāṁ kalikāmiva

bearing radiance in her limbs, her hair, cheeks, and lips — like a bud freshly opened upon the ashoka tree of the god of love.

Verse 138 (padma.1.16.138)

pradagdhahṛcchayenaiva netravahniśikhotkaraiḥ dhātrā kathaṁ hi sā sṛṣṭā pratirūpamapaśyatā

By mere flames from the tips of her eyes, the very heart of desire seemed as if burnt. How indeed did the Creator, who had seen no prior model, fashion her thus?

Verse 139 (padma.1.16.139)

kalpitā cetsvayaṁ budhyā naipuṇyasya gatiḥ parā uttuṁgāgrāvimau sṛṣṭau yanme saṁpaśyataḥ sukhaṁ

If she was fashioned by his own intelligence, then this is the very highest reach of skill. These two high-peaked breasts which he created — the sight of them brings me joy;

Verse 140 (padma.1.16.140)

payodharau nāticitraṁ kasya saṁjāyate hṛdi rāgopahatadehoyamadharo yadyapi sphuṭam

her breasts — it is no great wonder that they arise in anyone's heart with delight. Though her lower lip is evidently colored by passion,

Verse 141 (padma.1.16.141)

tathāpi sevamānasya nirvāṇaṁ saṁprayacchati vahadbhirapi kauṭilyamalakaiḥ sukhamarpyate

even so, to one who partakes of it, it grants the deepest satisfaction. Even her curling locks, bearing their own crookedness, bestow delight.

Verse 142 (padma.1.16.142)

doṣopi guṇavadbhāti bhūrisauṁdaryamāśritaḥ netrayorbhūṣitāvaṁtā vākarṇābhyāśamāgatau

Even a flaw, when it rests upon abundant beauty, appears as a virtue. Both ornamented eyes extend all the way to the very vicinity of the ears —

Verse 143 (padma.1.16.143)

kāraṇādbhāvacaitanyaṁ pravadaṁti hi tadvidaḥ karṇayorbhūṣaṇe netre netrayoḥ śravaṇāvimau

those who understand such things say that consciousness of feeling arises from its cause. The eyes are the ornament of the ears, and these two, hearing, seem the ornament of the eyes —

Verse 144 (padma.1.16.144)

kuṁḍalāṁjanayoratra nāvakāśosti kaścana na tadyuktaṁ kaṭākṣāṇāṁ yaddvidhākaraṇaṁ hṛdi

here there is no room left at all for earrings or collyrium. It is not fitting that sidelong glances should divide the heart —

Verse 145 (padma.1.16.145)

tavasaṁbaṁdhinoye'tra kathaṁ te duḥkhabhāginaḥ sarvasuṁdaratāmeti vikāraḥ prākṛtairguṇaiḥ

how could those associated with you here ever be sharers in sorrow? Even a natural blemish becomes entirely beautiful through her own qualities.

Verse 146 (padma.1.16.146)

vṛddhe kṣaṇaśatānāṁ tu dṛṣṭameṣā mayā dhanam dhātrā kauśalyasīmeyaṁ rūpotpattau sudarśitā

In my long age, spanning hundreds of moments, I have seen this as true wealth. This is the very limit of the Creator's skill, well displayed in the creation of beautiful form.

Verse 147 (padma.1.16.147)

karotyeṣā mano nṝṇāṁ sasnehaṁ kṛtivibhramaiḥ evaṁ vimṛśatastasya tadrūpāpahṛtatviṣaḥ

She makes the hearts of men tender with affection, through her artful, playful glances.' As he reflected thus, his own splendor was, as it were, stolen away by her beauty,

Verse 148 (padma.1.16.148)

niraṁtarodgataiśchannamabhavatpulakairvapuḥ tāṁ vīkṣya navahemābhāṁ padmapatrāyatekṣaṇām

and his body became covered with hairs standing on end, one after another. Beholding her, bright as new gold, her eyes long like lotus petals,

Verse 149 (padma.1.16.149)

devānāmatha yakṣāṇāṁ gaṁdharvoragarakṣasām nānā dṛṣṭā mayā nāryo nedṛśī rūpasaṁpadā

he thought: 'Of gods, and yakshas, of gandharvas, serpents, and rakshasas, many women have I seen — but none with such a wealth of beauty as this.

Verse 150 (padma.1.16.150)

trailokyāṁtargataṁ yadyadvastutattatpradhānataḥ samādāya vidhātrāsyāḥ kṛtā rūpasya saṁsthitiḥ

Whatever the finest thing exists within the three worlds, taking all of that as its essence, the Creator has fashioned this form.'

Verse 151 (padma.1.16.151)

iṁdra uvāca kāsi kasya kutaśca tvamāgatā subhru kathyatām ekākinī kimarthaṁ ca vīthīmadhyeṣu tiṣṭhasi

Indra said: 'Who are you, whose daughter, and from where have you come, O fair-browed one — tell me. And why do you stand alone here in the middle of the street?

Verse 152 (padma.1.16.152)

yānyetānyaṁgasaṁsthāni bhūṣaṇāni bibharṣi ca naitāni tava bhūṣāyai tvameteṣāṁ hi bhūṣaṇam

Whatever ornaments you wear upon your limbs, these are not for your adornment — you yourself are indeed the ornament of them.

Verse 153 (padma.1.16.153)

na devī na ca gaṁdharvī nāsurī na ca pannagī kinnarī dṛṣṭapūrvā vā yādṛśī tvaṁ sulocane

Neither a goddess, nor a gandharvi, nor an asura woman, nor a serpent-woman, nor a kinnari — O lovely-eyed one, I have never before seen one like you.

Verse 154 (padma.1.16.154)

uktā mayāpi bahuśaḥ kasmāddatse hi nottaram trapānvitā tu sā kanyā śakraṁ provāca vepatī

I have asked you many times — why do you give me no answer?' Then that maiden, filled with shyness, trembling, spoke to Shakra —

Verse 155 (padma.1.16.155)

gopakanyā tvahaṁ vīra vikrīṇāmīha gorasam navanītamidaṁ śuddhaṁ dadhi cedaṁ vimaṁḍakam

'I am a cowherd's daughter, O hero; here I sell dairy products. This is pure fresh butter, and this curds, and this whey-preparation,

Verse 156 (padma.1.16.156)

dadhnā caivātra takreṇa rasenāpi paraṁtapa arthī yenāsi tadbrūhi pragṛhṇīṣva yathepsitam

and here also curds, buttermilk, and cream too, O scorcher of foes. Tell me what you desire — take whatever you wish.'

Verse 157 (padma.1.16.157)

evamuktastadā śakro gṛhītvā tāṁ kare dṛḍham anayattāṁ viśālākṣīṁ yatra brahmā vyavasthitaḥ

Thus addressed, Shakra then took her firmly by the hand, and led that wide-eyed woman to where Brahma sat.

Verse 158 (padma.1.16.158)

nīyamānā tu sā tena krośaṁtī pitṛmātarau hā tāta mātarhā bhrātarnayatyeṣa naro balāt

As she was being led by him, she cried out for her father and mother: 'Alas, father! Mother! Alas, brother! This man is taking me away by force!

Verse 159 (padma.1.16.159)

yadi vāsti mayā kāryaṁ pitaraṁ me prayācaya sa dāsyati hi māṁ nūnaṁ bhavataḥ satyamucyate

If indeed there is a purpose for me, then beseech my father for me — he will surely give me, this is spoken truthfully to you.

Verse 160 (padma.1.16.160)

kā hi nābhilaṣetkanyā bhartāṁraṁ bhaktivatsalam nādeyamapi te kiṁcitpiturme dharmavatsala

What maiden would not desire a devoted, loving husband? O lover of dharma, nothing at all would be refused to you by my father —

Verse 161 (padma.1.16.161)

I shall beseech him with bowed head; he, pleased, will give me to you. If, without knowing my father's mind, I were to give myself to you,

Verse 162 (padma.1.16.162)

dharmo hi vipulo naśyettena tvāṁ na prasādaye bhaviṣyāmi vaśe tubhyaṁ yadi tātaḥ pradāsyati

much dharma would be destroyed thereby, so I shall not please you in that way. I shall be at your disposal if my father gives me to you.'

Verse 163 (padma.1.16.163)

itthamābhāṣyamāṇastu tadā śakro'nayacca tām brahmaṇaḥ purataḥ sthāpya prāhāsyārthe mayā'bale

Thus addressed, Shakra then led her onward; setting her before Brahma, he said: 'For his sake, brought here by me, O weak one —

Verse 164 (padma.1.16.164)

ānītāsi viśālākṣi mā śuco varavarṇini gopakanyāmasau dṛṣṭvā gauravarṇāṁ mahādyutim

you have been brought here, O wide-eyed one; do not grieve, O fair-complexioned one.' Seeing that cowherd girl, of fair complexion, of great splendor,

Verse 165 (padma.1.16.165)

kamalāmeva tāṁ mene puṁḍarīkanibhekṣaṇām taptakāṁcanasadbhitti sadṛśā pīnavakṣasam

Brahma took her to be Kamala (Lakshmi) herself, her eyes like white lotuses, her firm bosom like a wall of molten gold,

Verse 166 (padma.1.16.166)

mattebhahastavṛttoruṁ raktottuṁga nakhatviṣaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā'manyatātmānaṁ sāpi manmanathacaram

her rounded thighs like the trunk of a rutting elephant, her nails tall and red in hue. Seeing him, she too came to think herself moved by the god of love —

Verse 167 (padma.1.16.167)

tatprāptihetu ka dhiyā gatacitteva lakṣyate prabhutvamātmano dāne gopakanyāpyamanyata

her mind seemed to wander, absorbed in thinking of the means to attain him. The cowherd girl too came to consider herself sovereign over her own giving —

Verse 168 (padma.1.16.168)

yadyeṣa māṁ surūpatvādicchatyādātumāgrahāt nāsti sīmaṁtinī kācinmatto dhanyatarā bhuvi

'If he desires to take me, out of eagerness, for my beauty, then there is no married woman upon earth more fortunate than I.

Verse 169 (padma.1.16.169)

anenāhaṁ samānītā yaccakṣurgocaraṁ gatā asya tyāge bhavenmṛtyuratyāge jīvitaṁ sukham

I have been brought here by him, since I have come within the range of his sight; if he abandons me, death would follow; if he does not, life would be happiness.

Verse 170 (padma.1.16.170)

bhaveyamapamānācca dhigrūpā duḥkhadāyinī dṛśyate cakṣuṣānena yāpi yoṣitprasādataḥ

Through dishonor, I would become — shame on this beauty of mine — a source of misery. Yet whatever woman is looked upon by his eye, even out of mere favor,

Verse 171 (padma.1.16.171)

sāpi dhanyā na saṁdehaḥ kiṁ punaryāṁ pariṣvajet jagadrūpamaśeṣaṁ hi pṛthaksaṁcāramāśritam

she too is fortunate, without doubt — how much more so, then, whomever he should embrace! For the entire form of the universe, resting on its separate movements,

Verse 172 (padma.1.16.172)

lāvaṇyaṁ tadihaikasthaṁ darśitaṁ viśvayoninā asyopamā smaraḥ sādhvī manmathasya tviṣopamā

its very loveliness has been shown here concentrated in one place by the Source of the universe. His likeness is only Smara, the god of love; even Manmatha's splendor is but a comparison to his.

Verse 173 (padma.1.16.173)

tiraskṛtastu śokoyaṁ pitā mātā na kāraṇam yadi māṁ naiṣa ādatte svalpaṁ mayi na bhāṣate

This grief of mine, born of rejection — my father and mother are not its cause. If he does not accept me, if he speaks not even a little to me,

Verse 174 (padma.1.16.174)

asyānusmaraṇānmṛtyuḥ prabhaviṣyati śokajaḥ anāgasi ca patnyāṁ tu kṣipraṁ yāteyamīdṛśī

then death, born of grief, shall come upon me from constant remembrance of him. And I, innocent, though treated as such a wife, would swiftly pass away —

Verse 175 (padma.1.16.175)

kucayormaṇiśobhāyai śuddhāmbuja samadyutiḥ mukhamasya prapaśyaṁtyā mano me dhyānamāgatam

his face, of splendor equal to a pure lotus, is fit for the very jewel-adornment of my breasts. As I gaze upon his face, my mind has entered meditation upon it.'

Verse 176 (padma.1.16.176)

asyāṁgasparśasaṁyogānna cettvaṁ bahu manyase spṛśannaṭasi tarhi na tvaṁ śarīraṁ vitathaṁ param

[Indra thought to himself:] 'If you do not greatly value the union of touching his limbs, then, wandering about merely touching things, you are indeed nothing but an empty body.

Verse 177 (padma.1.16.177)

athavāsya na doṣosti yadṛcchācārako hyasi muṣitaḥ smara nūnaṁ tvaṁ saṁrakṣa svāṁ priyāṁ ratim

Or rather, there is no fault in this — you are indeed one who wanders as fate wills. Surely, O Smara, you have been robbed — guard your own beloved delight!

Verse 178 (padma.1.16.178)

tvattopi dṛśyate yena rūpeṇāyaṁ smarādhikaḥ mamānena manoratna sarvasvaṁ ca hṛtaṁ dṛḍham

By this form, he is seen to surpass even you, Smara. By this one, O jewel of my mind, my very all has been utterly stolen away.

Verse 179 (padma.1.16.179)

śobhā yā dṛśyate vaktre sā kutaḥ śaśalakṣmaṇi nopamā sakalaṁ kasya niṣkalaṁkena śasyate

Whatever beauty is seen in his face — where could that be found in the moon, marked as it is by its blemish? No comparison to fullness is praised through the spotless [moon, which itself bears a mark] —

Verse 180 (padma.1.16.180)

samānabhāvatāṁ yāti paṁkajaṁ nāsya netrayoḥ kopamā jalaśaṁkhena prāptā śravaṇaśaṁṅkhayoḥ

the lotus does not attain equality with his eyes. What comparison could a water-born conch attain to his conch-like ears?

Verse 181 (padma.1.16.181)

vidrumopyadharasyāsya labhate nopamāṁ dhruvam ātmasthamamṛtaṁ hyeṣa saṁsravaṁśceṣṭate dhruvam

Even coral certainly attains no true comparison to his lower lip; for it seems, in its very nature, ever to flow with immortal nectar.

Verse 182 (padma.1.16.182)

yadi kiṁcicchubhaṁ karma janmāṁtaraśataiḥ kṛtam tatprasādātpunarbhartā bhavatveṣa mamepsitaḥ

If any good deed at all has been performed by me across hundreds of former births, then by its grace, let this one become my desired husband once more.'

Verse 183 (padma.1.16.183)

evaṁ ciṁtāparādhīnā yāvatsā gopakanyakā tāvadbrahmā hariṁ prāha yajñārthaṁ satvaraṁ vacaḥ

While that cowherd girl was thus overcome by such thoughts, Brahma, for the sake of the sacrifice, quickly spoke this word to Hari —

Verse 184 (padma.1.16.184)

devī caiṣā mahābhāgā gāyatrī nāmataḥ prabho evamukte tadā viṣṇurbrahmāṇaṁ proktavānidam

'O Lord, this illustrious goddess is named Gayatri.' Thus addressed, Vishnu then said this to Brahma —

Verse 185 (padma.1.16.185)

tadenāmudvahasvādya mayā dattāṁ jagatprabho gāṁdharveṇa vivāhena vikalpaṁ mā kṛthāściram

'Then marry her today, given by me, O Lord of the world; by the Gandharva form of marriage — do not hesitate any longer.

Verse 186 (padma.1.16.186)

amuṁ gṛhāṇa devādya asyāḥ pāṇimanākulam gāṁdherveṇa vivāhena upayeme pitāmahaḥ

Take her hand today, O god, without hesitation.' By the Gandharva form of marriage, the Grandsire then wedded her.

Verse 187 (padma.1.16.187)

tāmavāpya tadā brahmā jagādāddhvaryusattamam kṛtā patnī mayā hyeṣā sadane me niveśaya

Having obtained her, Brahma then said to the most excellent Adhvaryu: 'I have made her my wife — install her in my dwelling.'

Verse 188 (padma.1.16.188)

mṛgaśṛṁgadharā bālā kṣaumavastrāvaguṁṭhitā patnīśālāṁ tadā nītā ṛtvigbhirvedapāragaiḥ

That young woman, bearing a deer-horn implement, veiled in a linen garment, was then led to the wives' hall by the priests, masters of the Veda.

Verse 189 (padma.1.16.189)

auduṁberaṇa daṁḍena prāvṛto mṛgacarmaṇā mahādhvare tadā brahmā dhāmnā svenaiva śobhate

With a staff of udumbara wood, clad in deerskin, Brahma, at that great sacrifice, shone forth then by his very own splendor.

Verse 190 (padma.1.16.190)

prārabdhaṁ ca tato hotraṁ brāhmaṇairvedapāragaiḥ bhṛguṇā sahitaiḥ karma vedoktaṁ taiḥ kṛtaṁ tadā tathā yugasahasraṁ tu sa yajñaḥ puṣkare'bhavat

Then the offering was begun by brahmins, masters of the Veda; together with Bhrigu, they performed the rite declared in the Veda. And thus that sacrifice continued at Pushkara for a thousand ages.
