Savitri's Dispute and Gayatri's Boon

Chapter 16All chaptersChapter 18

Verse 1 (padma.1.17.1)

bhīṣma uvāca tasminyajñe kimāścaryaṁ tadāsīddvijasattama kathaṁ rudraḥsthitastatra viṣṇuścāpi surottamaḥ

Bhishma said: O best of the twice-born, what wonder took place at that sacrifice? How did Rudra come to stand there, and Vishnu too, the greatest of gods?

Verse 2 (padma.1.17.2)

ābhīraḥputrī gāyatryā kiṁ kṛtaṁ tatra patnītve sthitayā tayā ābhīrāḥ kiṁ suvṛttajñairjñātvā taiśca kṛtaṁ mune

What happened when Gayatri, daughter of an Abhira, was made to stand there as his wife? O sage, on learning of this, what did the well-conducted Abhiras do?

Verse 3 (padma.1.17.3)

etadvṛttaṁ samācakṣva yathāvṛttaṁ yathākṛtam ābhīrairbrāhmaṇācāpi mamaitatkautukaṁ mahat

Relate this event to me exactly as it happened and exactly as it was done, by the Abhiras and by the Brahmins alike; I have great curiosity about it.

Verse 4 (padma.1.17.4)

pulastya uvāca tasminyajñe yadāścaryaṁ vṛttamāsīnnarādhipa kathayiṣyāmi tatsarvaṁ śṛṇuṣvaikamanā nṛpa

Pulastya said: O lord of men, I shall tell all of the wonder that occurred at that sacrifice; listen, O king, with a focused mind.

Verse 5 (padma.1.17.5)

rudrastu mahadāścaryaṁ kṛtavānvai sado gataḥ nindyarūpadharo devastatrāyāddvijasannidhau

Rudra performed a great wonder, going to the assembly hall; assuming a despicable form, the god came there into the presence of the twice-born.

Verse 6 (padma.1.17.6)

Vishnu did nothing at all, remaining aloof in his position of primacy; but the cowherd boys, on learning of the disappearance of the cowherd girl,

Verse 7 (padma.1.17.7)

gopyaśca tāstathā sarvā āgatā brahmaṇontikam dṛṣṭvā tāṁ mekhalābaddhāṁ yajñasīmavyasthitām

and all the cowherd women too came near Brahma; seeing her bound with a girdle, standing at the boundary of the sacrifice,

Verse 8 (padma.1.17.8)

hā putrīti tadā mātā pitā hā putriketi ca svaseti bāndhavāḥ sarve sakhyaḥ sakhyena hāsakhi

then the mother cried, 'Alas, daughter!', the father, 'Alas, my little daughter!', all the kinsmen, 'Sister!', and the friends cried out with their friend, 'Alas, friend!'

Verse 9 (padma.1.17.9)

kena tvamiha cānītā alaktāṁkā tu sundarī śāṭīṁ nivṛttāṁkṛtvā tu kena yuktā ca kambalī

'O beautiful one marked with lac-dye, who brought you here? Who removed your sari and clothed you instead in a woolen wrap?

Verse 10 (padma.1.17.10)

kena ceyaṁ jaṭā putri raktasūtrāvakalpitā evaṁvidhāni vākyāni śrutvovāca svayaṁhariḥ

Who has bound this matted hair of yours, O daughter, with a red thread?' Hearing such words, Hari himself then spoke:

Verse 11 (padma.1.17.11)

iha cāsmābhirānītā patnyarthaṁ viniyojitā brahmaṇālambitā bālā pralāpaṁ mākṛthāstviha

'She has been brought here by us, appointed to be my wife; this girl has been taken by Brahma — do not lament here.

Verse 12 (padma.1.17.12)

puṇyā caiṣā subhāgyā ca sarveṣāṁ kulanandinī puṇyā cenna bhavatyeṣā kathamāgacchate sadaḥ

She is virtuous and supremely fortunate, the delight of the whole family; were she not virtuous, how could she have come to this assembly?

Verse 13 (padma.1.17.13)

evaṁ jñātvā mahābhāgana tvaṁ śocitumarhasi kanyaiṣā te mahābhāgā prāptā devaṁ viriṁcanam

Knowing this, O most fortunate one, you ought not to grieve; this most fortunate daughter of yours has attained the god Virinchi (Brahma).

Verse 14 (padma.1.17.14)

yogino yogayuktā ye brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ na labhante prārthayantastāṁ gatiṁ duhitā gatā

Even yogis devoted to yoga, and Brahmins learned in the Vedas, do not obtain, however much they pray, the state your daughter has attained.

Verse 15 (padma.1.17.15)

dharmavantaṁ sadācāraṁ bhavantaṁ dharmavatsalam mayā jñātvā tataḥ kanyā dattācaiṣā virañcaye

Knowing you to be righteous, of good conduct, and devoted to dharma, I have therefore given this girl to Virinchi.

Verse 16 (padma.1.17.16)

anayā ābhīrakanyāyā tārito gaccha divyānlokānmahodayān yuṣmākaṁ ca kule cāpi devakāryārthasiddhaye

Through this Abhira girl your family shall be delivered — go to the divine, most exalted worlds, for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose and the good of your own lineage.

Verse 17 (padma.1.17.17)

avatāraṁ kariṣyehaṁ sā krīḍā tu bhaviṣyati yadā nandaprabhṛtayo hyavatāraṁ dharātale

I myself shall take incarnation — that shall be my divine play — when Nanda and the others take incarnation upon the earth,

Verse 18 (padma.1.17.18)

kariṣyanti tadā cāhaṁ vasiṣye teṣu madhyataḥ yuṣmākaṁ kanyakāḥ sarvā vasiṣyanti mayā saha

then I too shall dwell in their midst; all your daughters shall dwell together with me.

Verse 19 (padma.1.17.19)

tatra doṣo na bhavitā na dveṣo na ca matsaraḥ kariṣyanti tadā gopā bhayaṁ ca na manuṣyakāḥ

There shall be no fault in that, no hatred, nor any jealousy; the cowherds shall then have no fear on account of other people.

Verse 20 (padma.1.17.20)

na cāsyābhavitā doṣaḥ karmaṇānena karhicit śrutvā vākyaṁ tadā viṣṇoḥpraṇipatya yayustadā

And no fault shall ever attach to her because of this deed. Having heard these words of Vishnu, they then bowed down and departed.

Verse 21 (padma.1.17.21)

evameṣa varo deva yo datto bhavitā hi me avatāraḥ kulesmākaṁ kartavyo dharmasādhanaḥ

O Lord of gods, let this be the very boon you have granted, O mighty one — let this incarnation be accomplished in our family as a means to dharma.

Verse 22 (padma.1.17.22)

bhavato darśanādeva bhavāmaḥ svargavāsinaḥ śubhadā kanyakā caiṣā tāriṇī me kulaiḥ saha

By the mere sight of you we have become dwellers in heaven; and this auspicious girl is the deliverer of our whole family.

Verse 23 (padma.1.17.23)

evaṁ bhavatu deveśa varadānaṁ vibho tava anunītāstadā gopāḥ svayaṁ devena viṣṇunā

'O Lord of gods, so be it' — thus, O mighty one, was the boon granted. Then the cowherds themselves were reassured by the god Vishnu.

Verse 24 (padma.1.17.24)

brahmaṇāpyevamevaṁ tu vāmahastena bhāṣitam trapānvitā darśane tu bandhūnāṁ varavarṇinī

By Brahma too, with his left hand, the same was spoken; and seeing her kinsmen, the fair one grew abashed —

Verse 25 (padma.1.17.25)

kairahaṁ tu samākhyātā yenemaṁ deśamāgatāḥ dṛṣṭvā tu tāṁstataḥ prāha gāyatrī ābhīrakanyakā

'By whom was I recognized, by whom was I brought to this land?' — seeing them, Gayatri, the Abhira girl, then said this.

Verse 26 (padma.1.17.26)

vāmahastena tānsarvānprāṇipātapuraḥsaram atra cāhaṁ sthitā mātarbrahmāṇaṁ samupāgatā

Gayatri, bowing to all of them with hands joined in prostration, said: 'Here I stand, O mother — I have come to Brahma.'

Verse 27 (padma.1.17.27)

bhartā labdho mayā devaḥ sarvasyādyojagatpatiḥ nāhaṁśocyā bhavatyātu na pitrā na ca bāndhavaiḥ

I have won as husband this god who is the primordial lord of the whole universe; let me not be mourned, neither by father nor by kinsmen.

Verse 28 (padma.1.17.28)

sakhīgaṇaśca me yātu bhaginyo dārakaiḥ saha sarveṣāṁ kuśalaṁ vācyaṁ sthitāsmi saha daivataiḥ

Let my companions go, together with my sisters and their children; convey well-wishes to all — I remain here together with the gods.

Verse 29 (padma.1.17.29)

gateṣu teṣu sarveṣu gāyatrī sā sumadhyamā brahmaṇā sahitā reje yajñavāṭaṁ gatā satī

When all of them had gone, that slender-waisted Gayatri, united with Brahma, shone radiantly, going as a virtuous wife into the sacrificial enclosure.

Verse 30 (padma.1.17.30)

yācito brāhmaṇairbrahmā varānno dehi cepsitān yathepsitaṁ varaṁ teṣāṁ tadābrahmāpyayacchata

Entreated by the Brahmins, 'Grant us the boons we desire,' Brahma then bestowed on them the boons as they wished.

Verse 31 (padma.1.17.31)

tayā devyā ca gāyatryā dattaṁ taccānumoditam sā tu yajñe sthitā sādhvīdevatānāṁ samīpagā

By the goddess Gayatri too that same grant was given and confirmed; that virtuous lady remained present at the sacrifice, close beside the gods.

Verse 32 (padma.1.17.32)

divyaṁvarṣaśataṁ sāgraṁ sa yajño vavṛdhe tadā yajñavāṭaṁ kapardītu bhikṣārthaṁ samupāgataḥ

That sacrifice then went on growing for more than a full hundred divine years; then Kapardin, the matted-locked one, came to the sacrificial enclosure seeking alms.

Verse 33 (padma.1.17.33)

bṛhatkapālaṁ saṁgṛhya pañcamuṇḍairalaṁkṛtaḥ ṛtvigbhiśca sadasyaiśca dūrāttiṣṭhanjugupsitaḥ

Carrying a great skull-bowl, adorned with five skulls, he stood far off from the officiating priests and the assembly, appearing an object of disgust.

Verse 34 (padma.1.17.34)

kathaṁ tvamiha samprāpto nindito vedavādibhiḥ evaṁ protsāryamāṇopi nindyamānaḥ sa tairdvijaiḥ

'How have you come here?' — thus scorned by the upholders of the Veda; though repeatedly driven off by those Brahmins, he still remained.

Verse 35 (padma.1.17.35)

uvāca tāndvijānsarvānsmitaṁ kṛtvā maheśvaraḥ atra paitāmahe yajñe sarveṣāṁ toṣadāyini

Maheshvara, smiling, said to all those Brahmins: 'Here, in this sacrifice of the Grandsire, which brings satisfaction to everyone,'

Verse 36 (padma.1.17.36)

kaścidutsārya tenaiva ṛtemāṁ dvijasattamāḥ uktaḥ sa taiḥkapardī tu bhuktvā cānnaṁtato vraja

'let someone drive this one out, O best of the twice-born' — so it was said. Then those Brahmins told Kapardin, 'Eat, and then go.'

Verse 37 (padma.1.17.37)

kapardinā ca te uktā bhuktvā yāsyāmi bho dvijāḥ evamuktvā niṣaṇṇaḥ sakapālaṁ nyasya cāgrataḥ

Kapardin said to them, 'I will go only after eating, O Brahmins.' So saying, he sat down, setting the skull-bowl before him.

Verse 38 (padma.1.17.38)

teṣāṁ nirīkṣya tatkarma cakre kauṭilyamīśvaraḥ muktvā kapālaṁ bhūmau tu tāndvijānavalokayan

Beholding their conduct, the Lord wrought a deception; setting the skull-bowl on the ground, gazing at those Brahmins,

Verse 39 (padma.1.17.39)

uvāca puṣkaraṁ yāmi snānārthaṁ dvijasattamāḥ tūrṇaṁ gaccheti tairuktaḥ sa gataḥ parameśvaraḥ

he said: 'O best of the twice-born, I am going to Pushkara to bathe.' Told, 'Go quickly,' that Supreme Lord departed.

Verse 40 (padma.1.17.40)

viyatsthitaḥ kautukena mohayitvā divaukasaḥ snānārthaṁ puṣkaraṁ yāte kapardini dvijātayaḥ

Remaining in the sky and, in his playfulness, bewildering the gods, once Kapardin had gone off to bathe at Pushkara, the Brahmins —

Verse 41 (padma.1.17.41)

kathaṁ homotra kriyate kapāle sadasi sthite kapālāntānyaśaucāni purā prāha prajāpatiḥ

said: 'How can the fire-oblation be performed here with the skull-bowl present in the assembly? All that is near a skull is impure' — so Prajapati had declared long ago.

Verse 42 (padma.1.17.42)

viprobhyadhātsadasyekaḥ kapālamutkṣipāmyahaṁ uddhṛtaṁ tu sadasyena prakṣiptaṁ pāṇinā svayam

One Brahmin of the assembly said, 'I shall remove this skull-bowl.' That assembly-member, taking it up, threw it away himself with his own hand.

Verse 43 (padma.1.17.43)

tāvadanyatsthitaṁ tatra punareva samuddhṛtam evaṁ dvitīyaṁ tṛtīyaṁ viṁśatistriṁśadapyaho

But at once another skull-bowl appeared there; that too was taken up again. So a second, a third, even a twentieth, a thirtieth one — how astonishing!

Verse 44 (padma.1.17.44)

pañcāśacca śataṁ caiva sahasramayutaṁ tathā evaṁ nāntaḥ kapālānāṁ prāpyate dvijasattamaiḥ

A fiftieth and a hundredth too, and a thousandth, even a ten-thousandth — thus even the finest of Brahmins could find no end to the skull-bowls.

Verse 45 (padma.1.17.45)

natvā kapardinaṁ devaṁ śaraṇaṁ samupāgatāḥ puṣkarāraṇyamāsādya japyaiśca vaidikairbhṛśam

Then, bowing to the god Kapardin, they came to him for refuge; reaching the Pushkara forest, with Vedic recitations, most fervently

Verse 46 (padma.1.17.46)

tuṣṭuvuḥ sahitāḥ sarve tāvattuṣṭo haraḥ svayam tataḥ sadarśanaṁ prādāddvijānāṁ bhaktitaḥ śivaḥ

all together they praised him; thereupon Hara himself became pleased. Then Shiva, out of grace toward their devotion, granted the Brahmins his sight.

Verse 47 (padma.1.17.47)

uvāca tāṁstato devo bhaktinamrāndvijottamān puroḍāśasya niṣpattiḥ kapālaṁ na vinā bhavet

Then the god said to those finest Brahmins, humbled in devotion: 'The making of the sacrificial cake cannot happen without the skull-bowl.'

Verse 48 (padma.1.17.48)

kurudhvaṁ vacanaṁ viprāḥ bhāgaḥ sviṣṭakṛto mama evaṁ kṛte kṛtaṁ sarvaṁ madīyaṁ śāsanaṁ bhavet

'O Brahmins, honor my word — the share of the Svishtakrit offering is mine. Only when this is done will everything be reckoned as under my ordinance.'

Verse 49 (padma.1.17.49)

tathetyūcurdvijāśśambhuṁ kurmo vai tava śāsanam kapālapāṇirāheśo bhagavantaṁ pitāmaham

'So be it' — the Brahmins told Shambhu, 'we shall carry out your command.' Then the Lord, skull-bowl in hand, said to the Lord Grandsire —

Verse 50 (padma.1.17.50)

varaṁ varaya bho brahmanhṛdi yatte priyaṁ sthitam sarvaṁ tava pradāsyāmi adeyaṁ nāsti me prabho

'O Brahma, ask for whatever boon lies dear in your heart; I shall grant you everything — O lord, there is nothing I cannot give.'

Verse 51 (padma.1.17.51)

Brahma said: 'I shall not accept a boon, for I am consecrated and seated in this assembly; I myself am the granter of all desires to whoever prays to me here.'

Verse 52 (padma.1.17.52)

evaṁ vadantaṁ varadaṁ kratau tasminpitāmaham tatheti coktvā rudraḥ sa varamasmādayācata

When the Grandsire, the boon-giver, spoke thus at that sacrifice, Rudra said 'So be it' and asked a boon from him instead.

Verse 53 (padma.1.17.53)

tato manvantaretīte punareva prabhuḥ svayam brahmottaraṁ kṛtaṁ sthānaṁ svayaṁ devena śaṁbhunā

Then, after a manvantara had passed, the Lord himself came there once more; the god Shambhu himself had a seat set up higher than Brahma's.

Verse 54 (padma.1.17.54)

caturṣvapi hi vedeṣu pariniṣṭhāṁ gato hi yaḥ tasminkāle tadā devo nagarasyāvalokane

He who had attained complete mastery of all four Vedas — at that time that god, in order to view the city,

Verse 55 (padma.1.17.55)

sambhāṣaṇe dvijānāṁ tu kautukena sado gataḥ tenaivonmattaveṣeṇa hutaśeṣe maheśvaraḥ

and to converse with the Brahmins, went out of curiosity to the assembly. In that same guise of a madman, at the time of the fire-offering's remains, Maheshvara

Verse 56 (padma.1.17.56)

praviṣṭo brahmaṇaḥ sadma dṛṣṭo devairdvijottamaiḥ prahasanti ca kepyenaṁ kecinnirbhartsayaṁti ca

entered Brahma's hall, and the gods and the finest of the Brahmins saw him. Some laughed at him, and some began to scold him,

Verse 57 (padma.1.17.57)

apare pānsubhiḥ siñcantyunmattaṁ taṁ tathā dvijāḥ loṣṭaiśca laguḍaiścānye śuṣmiṇo balagarvitāḥ

other Brahmins threw dust on that madman; others, fierce and proud of their strength, struck him with clods and cudgels,

Verse 58 (padma.1.17.58)

praharanti smopahāsaṁ kurvāṇā hastasaṁvidam tatonye vaṭavastatra jaṭāsvāgṛhya cāntikam

mocking him and making derisive gestures with their hands. Then other young student-brahmacharins there, seizing his matted locks, coming close,

Verse 59 (padma.1.17.59)

pṛcchanti vratacaryāṁ tāṁ kenaiṣā te nidarśitā atra vāmāstriyaḥ saṁti tāsāmarthe tvamāgataḥ

began asking about this observance: 'Who showed you this? There are wicked women here — have you come for their sake?

Verse 60 (padma.1.17.60)

kenaiṣā darśitā caryā guruṇā pāpadarśinā yenaconmattavadvākyaṁ vadanmadhyepradhāvasi

What evil-minded teacher taught you this practice, on whose account, speaking like a lunatic, you run about in the midst of the assembly?'

Verse 61 (padma.1.17.61)

śiśnaṁ me brahmaṇo rūpaṁ bhagaṁ cāpi janārdanaḥ upyamānamidaṁ bījaṁ lokaḥ kliśnāticānyathā

'My linga is the very form of Brahma, and the yoni is Janardana; this is the seed that is sown — without it, the world suffers affliction.

Verse 62 (padma.1.17.62)

mayāyaṁ janitaḥ putro janitonena cāpyaham mahādevakṛte sṛṣṭiḥ sṛṣṭā bhāryā himālaye

By me this son was begotten, and by him I too was begotten; for Mahadeva's sake a creation was fashioned on Himalaya, a wife was created —

Verse 63 (padma.1.17.63)

umādattā tu rudrasya kasya sā tanayā vada mūḍhā yūyaṁ na jānītha vadatāṁ bhagavāṁstu vaḥ

given by Uma to Rudra — whose daughter is she, tell me! You are fools and do not know — it is the Lord himself who speaks through your mouths.

Verse 64 (padma.1.17.64)

brahmaṇā na kṛtā caryā darśitā naiva viṣṇunā giriśenāpi devena brahmavadhyā kṛtena tu

This practice was done neither by Brahma, nor shown by Vishnu, nor even by the god Girisha, who committed the sin of slaying Brahma —

Verse 65 (padma.1.17.65)

kathaṁsvidgarhase devaṁ vadhyosmākaṁ tvamadya vai evaṁ tairhanyamānastu brāhmaṇaistatra śaṁkaraḥ

so how then do you revile the god? Today you deserve to be slain by us!' Thus, being struck by those Brahmins there, Shankara,

Verse 66 (padma.1.17.66)

smitaṁ kṛtvābravītsarvānbrāhmaṇānnṛpasattama kiṁ māṁ na vittha bho viprā unmattaṁ naṣṭacetanam

smiling, said to all those Brahmins, O best of kings: 'Do you not recognize me, O Brahmins? Am I truly mad, out of my senses?

Verse 67 (padma.1.17.67)

yūyaṁ kāruṇikāḥ sarve mitrabhāve vyavasthitāḥ vadamānamidaṁ chadma brahmarūpadharaṁ haram

You are all compassionate, established in friendship' — thus, in this disguise, Hara, wearing Brahma's form, went on speaking this feigned confusion.

Verse 68 (padma.1.17.68)

māyayā tasya devasya mohitāste dvijottamāḥ kapardinaṁ nijaghnuste pāṇipādaiśca muṣṭibhiḥ

Deluded by that god's power of illusion, those finest Brahmins struck Kapardin with hands, feet, and fists,

Verse 69 (padma.1.17.69)

daṇḍaiścāpi ca kīlaiśca unmattaveṣadhāriṇam pīḍyamānastatastaistu dvijaiḥ kopamathāgamat

and with staffs and stakes as well, that one wearing the guise of a madman. Being so tormented by those Brahmins, he then grew angry.

Verse 70 (padma.1.17.70)

tato devena te śaptā yūyaṁ vedavivarjitāḥ ūrdhvajaṭāḥ kratubhraṣṭāḥ paradāropasevinaḥ

Then the god cursed them: 'You shall become devoid of the Vedas, with matted hair standing erect, fallen from the sacrifice, devoted to others' wives,

Verse 71 (padma.1.17.71)

veśyāyāntu ratā dyūte pitṛmātṛvivarjitāḥ na putraḥ paitṛkaṁ vittaṁ vidyāṁ vāpi gamiṣyati

given to prostitutes and gambling, bereft of father and mother; the son shall obtain neither the paternal wealth nor learning.

Verse 72 (padma.1.17.72)

sarve ca mohitāḥ santu sarveṁdriyavivarjitāḥ raudrīṁ bhikṣāṁ samaśnaṁtu parapiṇḍopajīvinaḥ

May all of you become deluded, deprived of all your senses; may you eat degrading, Rudra-fit alms, living off the food offered to others,

Verse 73 (padma.1.17.73)

ātmānaṁ vartayantaśca nirmamā dharmavarjitāḥ kṛpārpitā tu yairviprairunmatte mayi sāṁpratam

sustaining yourselves however you can, without possessions, without dharma. But those Brahmins who just now, while I was in this mad state, showed me compassion —

Verse 74 (padma.1.17.74)

teṣāṁ dhanaṁ ca putrāśca dāsīdāsamajāvikam kulotpannāśca vai nāryo mayi tuṣṭe bhavanviha

their wealth and sons, maidservants and menservants, goats and sheep, and the women born in their families, shall flourish here once I am pleased.'

Verse 75 (padma.1.17.75)

evaṁ śāpaṁ varaṁ caiva datvāntarddhānamīśvaraḥ gato dvijāgate deve matvā taṁ śaṁkaraṁ prabhum

Having thus given both curse and boon, the Lord vanished from sight. The Brahmins, realizing that it was the Lord Shankara himself who had come in disguise, departed.

Verse 76 (padma.1.17.76)

When, though searching diligently, they still could not find him, then, taking up their observances, they came to the Pushkara forest.

Verse 77 (padma.1.17.77)

snātvā jyeṣṭhasaro viprā jepuste śatarudriyam jāpyāvasāne devastānaśīraragirā'bravīt

Having bathed in Jyeshtha lake, those Brahmins recited the Shatarudriya hymn; at the end of the recitation the god spoke to them in a gentle voice —

Verse 78 (padma.1.17.78)

anṛtaṁ na mayā proktaṁ svaireṣvapi kutaḥpunaḥ āgate nigrahe kṣemaṁ bhūyopi karavāṇyaham

'I have spoken no falsehood, not even in jest — how then could I now? Now that the reckoning has passed, I shall once more do good for you.

Verse 79 (padma.1.17.79)

śāntā dāṁtā dvijā ye tu bhaktimanto mayi sthirāḥ na teṣāṁ chidyate vedo na dhanaṁ nāpi santatiḥ

Those Brahmins who are peaceful, self-controlled, devoted and steadfast in me — for them neither their Vedic learning, nor their wealth, nor their progeny is ever cut off.

Verse 80 (padma.1.17.80)

agnihotraratā ye ca bhaktimanto janārdane pūjayanti ca brahmāṇaṁtejorāśiṁ divākaram

Those who are devoted to the fire-oblation and to Janardana, who worship Brahma and the sun, that mass of radiance,

Verse 81 (padma.1.17.81)

nāśubhaṁ vidyate teṣāṁ yeṣāṁ sāmye sthitā matiḥ etāvaduktvā vacanaṁ tūṣṇīṁ bhūtastu so'bhavat

for those whose intellect is fixed in equanimity, nothing at all is inauspicious.' Having said just this much, he fell silent.

Verse 82 (padma.1.17.82)

labdhvā varaṁ saprasādaṁ devadevānmaheśvarāt ājagmuḥ sahitāssarve yatra devaḥpitāmahaḥ

Having received a gracious boon from Maheshvara, god of gods, they all came together to where the god, the Grandsire, was seated.

Verse 83 (padma.1.17.83)

viriñciṁ saṁhitājāpyaistoṣayaṁto'grataḥsthitāḥ tuṣṭastānabravīdbrahmā mattopi vriyatāṁ varaḥ

Standing before Virinchi, pleasing him with recitation of the Samhita, Brahma, pleased, said to them: 'Ask a boon of me as well.'

Verse 84 (padma.1.17.84)

brahmaṇastenavākyena hṛṣṭāḥ sarve dvijottamāḥ ko varo yācyatāṁ viprāḥ parituṣṭe pitāmahe

At that word of Brahma all the finest Brahmins rejoiced: 'O Brahmins, now that the Grandsire is fully pleased, what boon should be asked?'

Verse 85 (padma.1.17.85)

agnihotrāṇi vedāśca śāstrāṇi vividhāni ca sāntānikāśca ye lokā varadānādbhavaṁtu naḥ

'Let the fire-oblations, the Vedas, the various shastras, and the worlds attained through progeny, become ours by this boon.'

Verse 86 (padma.1.17.86)

evaṁ prajalpatāṁ tatra viprāṇāṁ kopamāviśat ke yūyaṁ ketra pravarā vayaṁ śreṣṭhāstathāpare

As they spoke thus, anger arose among the Brahmins: 'Who are you? Who here is superior? We are the finest' — so others too began to claim.

Verse 87 (padma.1.17.87)

netineti tathā viprā dvijāṁstāṁstatra saṁsthitān brahmovācābhisaṁprekṣya brāhmaṇānkrodhapūritān

'No, no' — thus a dispute broke out among those Brahmins standing there. Then Brahma, looking upon those Brahmins filled with anger, said —

Verse 88 (padma.1.17.88)

yasmādyūyaṁ tribhirbhāgaiḥ sabhāyāṁ bāhyataḥ sthitāḥ tasmādāmūliko gulmo hyeko bhavatu vodvijāḥ

'Since you stand outside the assembly, split into three factions, therefore, O Brahmins, let one of your groups become a settled, rooted clan.

Verse 89 (padma.1.17.89)

udāsīnāḥ sthitā ye tu udāsīnā bhavaṁtu te sāyudhābaddhanistriṁśā yoddhukāmā vyavasthitāḥ

Those who remained neutral, let them remain the neutral ones; those who stood armed, swords girded, eager to fight —

Verse 90 (padma.1.17.90)

kauśikīti gaṇo nāma tṛtīyo bhavatu dvijāḥ tridhābaddhamidaṁ sthānaṁ sarvaṁ yuṣmadbhaviṣyati

let their group be called by the name Kaushiki, O Brahmins, as the third. This place, thus divided threefold, shall all belong to you.

Verse 91 (padma.1.17.91)

bāhyato lokaśabdena procyamānāḥ prajāstviha avijñeyamidaṁ sthānaṁ viṣṇuḥ pālayitā dhruvam

By whatever name these people are spoken of in the world outside, this place shall remain likewise beyond ordinary understanding; Vishnu shall surely be its protector.

Verse 92 (padma.1.17.92)

mayā dattaṁ cirasthāyi abhaṁgaṁ cabhaviṣyati evamuktvā tadā brahmā samāptiṁtāmavaikṣata

Verse 93 (padma.1.17.93)

brāhmaṇāḥ sahitāste tu krodhāmarṣasamanvitāḥ atithiṁ bhojayānāśca vedābhyāsaratāstu te

Those Brahmins together, though filled with anger and impatience, remained ones who fed their guests and stayed devoted to the practice of the Veda.

Verse 94 (padma.1.17.94)

And this supreme sacred field, Pushkara, known by Brahma's name — the peaceful Brahmins who dwell there, resident in that field,

Verse 95 (padma.1.17.95)

prāpyate mānavairloke ṣaṇmāsādrājasattama puṣkare tu na saṁdeho brahmacaryamanā yadi

is attained by men in this world, O best of kings, that very perfection is attained at Pushkara in six months — this is beyond doubt, if one is devoted to celibacy.

Verse 99 (padma.1.17.99)

sāvitrīmāgatāṁ dṛṣṭvā bhītastatra purandaraḥ adhomukhaḥ sthitobrahmā kimeṣā māṁvadiṣyati

Seeing Savitri approaching, Purandara (Indra) grew afraid there; Brahma stood with face lowered — 'What will she say to me?'

Verse 120 (padma.1.17.120)

Vishnu and Rudra were filled with shame, and all the other Brahmins and assembly-members grew afraid too, along with the other dwellers of heaven.

Verse 121 (padma.1.17.121)

putrāḥpautrā bhāgineyā mātulā bhrātarastathā ṛbhavo nāma ye devā devānāmapi devatāḥ

maunībhūtā tu śṛṇvānā sarveṣāṁ vadatāṁ giraḥ addhvaryuṇā samāhūtā nāgatā varavarṇinī

remained silent, listening to what everyone was saying. Though summoned by the Adhvaryu priest, the fair one had still not arrived.

Verse 124 (padma.1.17.124)

śakreṇānyāhṛtā ābhīrādattā sā viṣṇunāsvayam anumoditācarudreṇapitrā'dattāsvayaṁ tathā

Someone else had been led in by Shakra; that Abhira girl had been given herself by Vishnu, approved by Rudra, and given by her own father —

Verse 125 (padma.1.17.125)

kathaṁ sā bhavitā yajñe samāptiṁ vā vrajetkatham evaṁ ciṁtayatāṁ teṣāṁ praviṣṭā kamalālayā

Verse 126 (padma.1.17.126)

vṛto brahmāsadasyaistu ṛtvigbhirdaivataistathā hūyaṁte cāgnayastatra brāhmaṇairvaidapāragaiḥ

pativratā patiprāṇā prādhānye ca niveśitā rūpānvitā viśālākṣī tejasā bhāskaropamā

devoted to her husband, living wholly for him, established in the place of chief consort, beautiful, wide-eyed, radiant as the sun,

Verse 129 (padma.1.17.129)

illumined the assembly there like the very splendor of the sun; and the officiating priests too took their place by the blazing fire,

Verse 130 (padma.1.17.130)

paśūnāmiha gṛhṇānābhāgaṁ svasva carormudā yajñabhāgārthino devā vilambādbruvate tadā

joyfully receiving each their own portion of the sacrificial offering. The gods, desiring their share of the sacrifice, then spoke because of the delay:

Verse 131 (padma.1.17.131)

kālahīnaṁ na kartavyaṁ kṛtaṁ na phaladaṁ yataḥ vedeṣvevamadhīkāro dṛṣṭaḥsarvairmanīṣibhiḥ

'What is not done at its proper time should not be done, for an untimely act bears no fruit — this very principle is seen upheld in the Vedas by all the wise.'

Verse 132 (padma.1.17.132)

prāvargye kriyamāṇe tu brāhmaṇairvedapāragaiḥ kṣīradvayena saṁyukta śṛtenādhvaryuṇā tathā

While the Pravargya rite was being performed by the Brahmins learned in the Veda, with the offering made of two kinds of milk, cooked by the Adhvaryu priest,

Verse 133 (padma.1.17.133)

upahūtenāgate nacāhūteṣu dvijanmasu kriyamāṇe tathābhakṣye dṛṣṭvā devī ruṣānvitā

though summoned, Savitri had not come, while among the invited twice-born Gayatri was already included — seeing this offering-rite proceed, the goddess Savitri filled with anger.

Verse 134 (padma.1.17.134)

uvāca devī brahmāṇaṁ sadomadhye tu mauninam kimetadyujyate deva kartumetadviceṣṭitam

She said to Brahma, sitting silent in the midst of the assembly: 'O god, is this fitting to do? This wayward deed you are performing?

Verse 135 (padma.1.17.135)

māṁ parityajya yatkāmātkṛtavānasi kilbiṣam natulyāpādarajasā mamaiṣā yā śiraḥ kṛtā

Abandoning me, out of what desire have you committed this sin? She who is not even equal to the dust of my feet — her you have made your chief consort!

Verse 136 (padma.1.17.136)

yadvadanti janāssarve saṁgatāḥ sadasi sthitāḥ ājñāmīśvarabhūtānāṁ tāṁ kuruṣva yadīcchasi

bhavatā rūpalobhena kṛtaṁ lokavigarhitam putreṣu nakṛtālajjā pautreṣucana te prabho

Out of greed for her beauty you have done a deed condemned by the world; you felt no shame before your sons, nor before your grandsons, O lord!

Verse 138 (padma.1.17.138)

kāmakārakṛtaṁ manya etatkarmavigarhitam pitāmahosi devānāmṛṣīṇāṁ prapitāmahaḥ

I consider this a reprehensible act, done out of mere self-will; you are the grandfather of the gods and the great-grandfather of the sages —

Verse 139 (padma.1.17.139)

then how, seeing your own conduct, has no shame arisen in you? This has become a mockery in the eyes of the world, and I have been disgraced, O lord!

Verse 140 (padma.1.17.140)

yadyeṣa te sthiro bhāvastiṣṭha deva namostute ahaṁkathaṁsakhīnāṁtu darśayiṣyāmi vaimukham

If this resolve of yours is fixed, then so be it, O god, I bow to you — but how shall I show my face to my own companions?

Verse 141 (padma.1.17.141)

bhartrā me vidhṛtā patnī kathametadahaṁ vade brahmovāca ṛtvigbhistvaritaścāhaṁ dīkṣākālādanaṁtaram

Verse 142 (padma.1.17.142)

patnīṁ vinā na homotra śīghraṁ patnīmihānaya śakreṇaiṣā samānītā datteyaṁ mama viṣṇunā

"there can be no fire-offering here without a wife — quickly bring one," [they said]. This girl was brought by Shakra, and given to me by Vishnu;

Verse 143 (padma.1.17.143)

gṛhītā ca mayā subhru kṣamasvaitaṁ mayā kṛtam na cāparādhaṁ bhūyonyaṁ kariṣye tava suvrate

and accepted by me, O fair-browed one. Forgive me for what I have done; I shall commit no other offense against you again, O you of noble vows.

Verse 144 (padma.1.17.144)

pādayoḥ patitastehaṁ kṣamasveha namostute pulastya uvāca evamuktā tadā kruddhā brahmāṇaṁ śaptumudyatā

Fallen at your feet, I bow to you — forgive me.' Pulastya said: Thus addressed, she, enraged, then prepared to curse Brahma:

Verse 145 (padma.1.17.145)

yadi mesti tapastaptaṁ guravo yadi toṣitāḥ sarvabrahmasamūheṣu sthāneṣu vividheṣu ca

'If I have performed austerity, if the gurus have ever been pleased with me, then in all assemblies of Brahmins, and in the various places,

Verse 146 (padma.1.17.146)

naiva te brāhmaṇāḥ pūjāṁ kariṣyaṁti kadācana ṝte tu kārtikīmekāṁ pūjāṁ sāṁvatsarīṁ tava

the Brahmins shall never worship you — except for one annual worship on the Kartiki day,

Verse 147 (padma.1.17.147)

kariṣyanti dvijāḥ sarve martyā nānyatra bhūtale etadbrahmāṇamuktvāha śatakratumupasthitam

that alone all mortal Brahmins shall perform for you, and nowhere else on this earth.' Having said this to Brahma, she then spoke to Shatakratu, who stood there:

Verse 148 (padma.1.17.148)

bhobhoḥ śakra tvayānītā ābhīrī brahmaṇontikam yasmātte kṣudrakaṁkarmatasmātvaṁ lapsyase phalam

'O Shakra, Shakra! It was you who brought that Abhira girl into Brahma's presence; because of this vile deed of yours, you shall reap its fruit —

Verse 149 (padma.1.17.149)

yadā saṁgrāmamadhye tvaṁ sthātā śakra bhaviṣyasi tadā tvaṁ śatrubhirbaddho nītaḥ paramikāṁ daśām

when you stand in the midst of battle, O Shakra, then, bound by your enemies, you shall be brought to the most wretched condition,

Verse 150 (padma.1.17.150)

akiñcano naṣṭasatvaḥ śatrūṇāṁ nagare sthitaḥ parābhavaṁ mahatprāpya na cirādeva mokṣyase

destitute, your strength destroyed, held captive in the city of your enemies — having suffered great humiliation, you shall not be freed for a long time.'

Verse 151 (padma.1.17.151)

śakraṁ śaptvā tadā devī viṣṇuṁ vākyamathābravīt bhṛguvākyena te janma yadā martye bhaviṣyati

Verse 152 (padma.1.17.152)

bhāryāviyogajaṁ duḥkhaṁ tadā tvaṁ tatra bhokṣyase hṛtāteśatruṇā patnī pare pāro mahodadheḥ

then you shall suffer there the sorrow born of separation from your wife; your wife shall be carried off by an enemy, across the far shore of the great ocean.

Verse 153 (padma.1.17.153)

na ca tvaṁ jñāsyase nītāṁ śokopahatacetanaḥ bhrātrā saha paraṁ kaṣṭāmāpadaṁ prāpya duḥkhitaḥ

You shall not even know where she has been taken, your mind stricken with grief; together with your brother, falling into extreme calamity, you shall be sorrowful.

Verse 154 (padma.1.17.154)

bhobhoḥ kāpālika kṣudra strīrasmākaṁ jihīrṣasi tadetaddarpitaṁ tedya bhūmau liṅgaṁpatiṣyati

"O vile skull-bearing beggar, you wish to seduce our wives!" Then this linga of yours, so proud today, shall fall to the ground.

Verse 157 (padma.1.17.157)

vihīnaḥ pauruṣeṇa tvaṁ muniśāpācca pīḍitaḥ gaṅgādvāresthitā patnī sā tvāmāśvāsayiṣyati

You shall be stripped of your manhood, afflicted by the sages' curse; your wife, dwelling at Gangadvara, shall then be the one to console you.

'O Agni, you who devour all — this was ordained by my son, the ever-righteous Bhrigu; being thus consumed myself, how should I not now burn you?

Verse 159 (padma.1.17.159)

Verse 161 (padma.1.17.161)

sadā tīrthāni kṣetrāṇi lobhādeva bhajiṣyatha parānneṣu sadātṛptā atṛptāssvagṛheṣu ca

you shall always frequent sacred fords and holy fields out of mere greed; ever content with others' food, yet never content in your own homes,

Verse 162 (padma.1.17.162)

officiating at forbidden sacrifices, accepting gifts from the despicable, earning wealth in vain and spending it just as vainly —

Verse 163 (padma.1.17.163)

pretānāṁ tena pretatvaṁ bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ evaṁ śakraṁ tathā viṣṇuṁ rudraṁ vai pāvakaṁ tathā

for this reason you shall attain the state of ghosts (pretas) — this is beyond doubt.' Thus Shakra, and Vishnu, and Rudra, and Pavaka too,

Verse 164 (padma.1.17.164)

brahmāṇaṁ brāhmaṇāṁścaiva sarvāṁstānāśapadruṣā śāpaṁ datvā tathāteṣāṁ niṣkrāṁtā sadasastathā

and Brahma and all the Brahmins as well — she cursed them all in her fury. Having given them the curse, she departed from the assembly,

Verse 165 (padma.1.17.165)

jyeṣṭhaṁ puṣkaramāsādya tadāsā ca vyavasthitā lakṣmīṁprāha satīṁ tāṁ caśakrabhāryāṁ varānanām

and to the other young women as well: 'I shall not stay in this assembly; I shall go where I will not even hear its sound.'

Then all those young women returned to their own dwellings. Savitri, angry with them too, prepared to curse them as well —

Verse 168 (padma.1.17.168)

yasmānmāṁ tu parityajya gatāstā devayoṣitaḥ tāsāmapi tathā śāpaṁpradāsyekupitā bhṛśam

Lakshmi shall never have a lasting dwelling in one place; fickle-minded and base, she shall dwell among fools,

Verse 170 (padma.1.17.170)

mleccheṣu pārvatīyeṣu kutsite kutsite tathā mūrkheṣu cāvalipteṣu abhiśapte durātmani

among mlecchas, among mountain-dwellers, among the most base of places, among fools and the arrogant, and even in a wicked, accursed man —

Verse 171 (padma.1.17.171)

in such a man, by my curse, shall your dwelling be.' Having given this curse, she then cursed Indrani as well —

Verse 172 (padma.1.17.172)

dahyamānā divārātrau vaṁdhyāśabdena dūṣitāḥ gauryyapyevaṁ tadā śaptā sāvitryā varavarṇinī

Burning day and night, defiled by the reproach of 'barren one' — Gauri too, the fair one, was thus cursed by Savitri.

O steadfast king, having worshipped the people duly with mantra, and, O mighty-armed one, with ghee, milk, and rice-pudding,

Verse 236 (padma.1.17.236)

brāhmaṇānvācayitvā tu svastyā tu vidhivannṛpa kṛtvā puṇyāhaśabdaṁ ca tadrathaṁ bhrāmayetpure

having the Brahmins recite blessings of well-being duly, O king, and pronouncing the auspicious-day exclamation, one should then parade that chariot through the city.

Verse 237 (padma.1.17.237)

vipraiścaturvedavidbhirbhrāmayedbrahmaṇo ratham bahvṛvṛcātharvaṇairvīrachandogādhvaryubhistathā

Brahma's chariot should be paraded together with Brahmins learned in all four Vedas — with reciters of the Rig, the Atharva, heroes, Samavedic chanters, and Adhvaryus.

Verse 238 (padma.1.17.238)

bhrāmayeddevadevasya suraśreṣṭhasya taṁ rathaṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ puraṁ sarvaṁ mārgeṇa susamena tu

The chariot of that god of gods, the finest of the immortals, should be paraded in a clockwise circuit of the whole city, by a level and even road.

Verse 239 (padma.1.17.239)

na voḍhavyo ratho vīra rūdreṇa hitamicchatā na cārohedrathaṁ prājño muktvaikaṁ bhojakaṁ nṛpaḥ

O hero, one seeking good should not have the chariot drawn improperly; nor should even the wise king mount the chariot, except for the one appointed priest.

Verse 240 (padma.1.17.240)

brahmaṇo dakṣiṇe pārśve gāyatrīṁ sthāpayennṛpa bhojakaṁ vāmapārśve tupurataḥpaṁṅkajaṁ nyeset

O king, on Brahma's right side Gayatri should be installed, the officiating priest on the left, and a lotus placed before him.

Verse 241 (padma.1.17.241)

evaṁ tūryaninādaistu śaṅkha śabdaiśca puṣkalaiḥ bhrāmayitvā rathaṁ vīra puraṁ sarvaṁ pradakṣiṇam

Thus, with the blare of trumpets and abundant conch-sounds, O hero, having led the chariot in a full circuit around the whole city,

Verse 242 (padma.1.17.242)

svasthāne sthāpayeddevaṁ datvā nīrājanaṁ budhaḥ yaevaṁ kurute yātrāṁ yo vā bhaktyāpipaśyati

the wise one should perform the waving of lamps and then install the god back in his own place. Whoever performs this procession thus, or even beholds it with devotion,

Verse 243 (padma.1.17.243)

rathaṁ vā karṣayedyastu sa gacchedbrahmaṇaḥ padaṁ kārtike māsyamāvāsyāṁ yaśca dīpapradīpanaṁ

or who draws the chariot, attains Brahma's abode. And whoever, on the new-moon day of the month of Kartika, performs the lighting of lamps

Verse 244 (padma.1.17.244)

śālāyāṁ brahmaṇaḥ kuryātsa gacchetparamaṁ padam gandhapuṣpairnavairvastrairātmānaṁ pūjayettu yaḥ

in Brahma's hall, attains the Supreme Abode. Whoever worships the deity with fresh scents, flowers, and garments,

Verse 245 (padma.1.17.245)

tasyāṁ pratipadāyāṁ tu sa gacchedbrahmaṇaḥ padam mahāpuṇyātithiriyaṁ balirājyapravartinī

attains Brahma's abode on that first lunar day. This is a most meritorious observance, the one that inaugurates Bali's reign,

Verse 246 (padma.1.17.246)

brahmaṇaḥ supriyā nityaṁ bāleyī parikīrtitā brahmāṇaṁ pūjayedyo'syāmātmānaṁ ca viśeṣataḥ

ever most dear to Brahma, celebrated by the name 'Baleyi.' Whoever worships Brahma on this day, and especially worships himself,

Verse 247 (padma.1.17.247)

sa yāti paramaṁ sthānaṁ viṣṇoramitatejasaḥ caitre māsi mahābāho puṇyā pratipadāṁ varā

attains the supreme abode of Vishnu of immeasurable splendor. O mighty-armed one, on the excellent and meritorious first day of the month of Chaitra,

Verse 248 (padma.1.17.248)

tasyāṁ yaḥ śvapacaṁ spṛṣṭvā snānaṁ kuryānnarottamaḥ na tasya duritaṁ kiṁcinnādhayo vyādhayo nṛpa

on that day, the finest of men who, having touched even an outcaste, performs a bath — for him, O king, there is no sin, no mental affliction, no disease

Verse 249 (padma.1.17.249)

bhavanti kuruśārdūla tasmātsnānaṁ samācaret divyaṁ nīrājanaṁtaddhi sarvarogavināśanaṁ

that arises, O tiger among the Kurus; therefore this bathing should surely be performed. That divine waving of lamps destroys every disease.

Verse 250 (padma.1.17.250)

gomahiṣyādi yatkiṁcittatsarvaṁ karṣayennṛpa tena vastrādibhiḥ sarvaistoraṇaṁbāhyato nyaset

Whatever cows, buffaloes, and such there are, O king, all of these should be led in procession; with all these, and with cloths and the like, a festive arch should be set up outside.

Verse 251 (padma.1.17.251)

brāhmaṇānāṁ tathā bhojyaṁ kuryātkurukulodvaha tisro hyetāḥ purā proktāstithayaḥ kurunandana

One should also arrange a meal for the Brahmins, O foremost of the Kuru line. These three tithis were declared in ancient times, O joy of the Kurus,

Verse 252 (padma.1.17.252)

kārtikāśvayuje māsi caitremāsi tathā nṛpa snānaṁ dānaṁ śataguṇaṁ kārttike yā tithirnṛpa

in the months of Kartika, Ashvayuja, and likewise Chaitra, O king; bathing and giving are a hundredfold meritorious on the Kartika tithi, O king —

Verse 253 (padma.1.17.253)

balirājñastu śubhadā paśūnāṁ hitakāriṇī gāyatryuvāca yaduktaṁ tu tayā vākyaṁ sāvitryā kamalodbhavaṁ

for King Bali it is auspicious, and beneficial to cattle.' Gayatri said: 'The word that the lotus-born Savitri spoke,

Verse 254 (padma.1.17.254)

that those Brahmins would never perform this worship — hearing this word of mine, those who shall in fact perform this worship,

Verse 255 (padma.1.17.255)

iha bhuktvā tu bhogāṁste paratra mokṣabhāginaḥ etāṁ jñātvā parāṁ dṛṣṭiṁ varaṁ tuṣṭaḥ prayacchati

having enjoyed pleasures here, shall become partakers of liberation in the world beyond.' Knowing this supreme insight, pleased, she grants a boon —

Verse 256 (padma.1.17.256)

śakrāhaṁ te varaṁ dāsye saṁgrāme śatrunigrahe tadā brahmā mocayitā gatvā śatruniketanam

'O Shakra, I shall grant you a boon: in battle, in subduing your enemies — then Brahma shall be the one to free you, going to the enemy's abode,

Verse 257 (padma.1.17.257)

svapuraṁ lapsyase naṣṭaṁ śatrunāśātparāṁ mudaṁ akaṁṭakaṁ mahadrājyaṁ trailokye te bhaviṣyati

you shall regain your own lost city, and shall find supreme joy in the destruction of your enemy. A great, thornless kingdom in the three worlds shall be yours.

Verse 258 (padma.1.17.258)

martyaloke yadā viṣṇo avatāraṁ kariṣyasi bhrātrā saha paraṁ duḥkhaṁ svabhāryāharaṇādijaṁ

O Vishnu, when you take incarnation in the mortal world, together with your brother you shall suffer supreme sorrow born of your own wife's abduction;

Verse 259 (padma.1.17.259)

hatvā śatruṁ punarbhāryāṁ lapsyase surasannidhau gṛhītvātāṁ punārājyaṁ kṛtvā svargaṁgamiṣyasi

having slain the enemy, you shall regain your wife again in the presence of the gods. Having regained your kingdom and ruled it, you shall go to heaven,

Verse 260 (padma.1.17.260)

ekādaśasahasrāṇi varṣāṇāṁ ca punardivaṁ khyātiste vipulā loke anurāgaṁ janaissaha

for eleven thousand years, and then heaven again. Your fame shall be vast in the world, and the love of the people shall remain with you.

Verse 261 (padma.1.17.261)

sāntānikānāma teṣāṁ lokā sthāsyanti bhāvitāḥ tvayā te tāritā deva rāmarūpeṇa mānavāḥ

The worlds of those who seek the continuity of their lineage shall remain established. By you, O god, in the form of Rama, mankind shall be delivered.'

Verse 262 (padma.1.17.262)

gāyatrī tu tadā rudraṁvaradā pratyabhāṣata patitepica te liṁge pūjāṁ kurvaṁti ye narāḥ

Then Gayatri, the boon-giver, spoke to Rudra: 'Even when your linga has fallen, those men who worship it,

Verse 263 (padma.1.17.263)

become pure, of meritorious deeds, and partakers of the heavenly world. Not even by the fire-oblation, nor by a sacrifice with kindled fire,

Verse 264 (padma.1.17.264)

yāṁ gatiṁ manujā yāṁti tava liṁgasya pūjanāt gaṁgātīre sadā liṁgaṁ bilbapatreṇa ye tava

do men attain the state that they attain through worshipping your linga. On the bank of the Ganga, those who ever worship your linga with bilva leaves,

Verse 265 (padma.1.17.265)

pūjayiṣyaṁti suprātā rudralokasya bhāginaḥ prāpyāpi śarvabhaktatvamagne tvaṁ bhava pāvanaḥ

at dawn, become partakers of Rudra's world. O Agni, having attained even the state of Shiva's devotee, become the purifier —

Verse 266 (padma.1.17.266)

tvayi prīte surāḥ sarve prītā vai nātra saṁśayaḥ tvanmukhena havirdevaiḥ prītāḥ prīte tvayidhruvam

when you are pleased, all the gods too are pleased, without doubt. Through your mouth, receiving the oblation, the gods are pleased; when you are pleased, they surely

Verse 267 (padma.1.17.267)

bhuñjate nātra sandeho vedoktaṁ vacanaṁ yathā gāyatrī brāhmaṇāṁstāṁśca sarvāṁścaivābravīdidaṁ

partake of it — this is beyond doubt, as the word of the Veda declares.' Gayatri also said this to all those Brahmins —

Verse 268 (padma.1.17.268)

yuṣmākaṁ prīṇanaṁ kṛtvā sarvatīrtheṣu mānavāḥ padaṁ sarve gamiṣyaṁti vairājākhyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

'Having pleased you at all the sacred fords, men shall all, without doubt, attain the abode called Viraja.

Verse 269 (padma.1.17.269)

annaprakārānvividhāndatvā dānānyanekaśaḥ śrāddheṣu prīṇanaṁ kṛtvā devadevā bhavanti te

Giving various kinds of food and many gifts, and bringing satisfaction in the shraddha rites, they become as gods even among the gods.

Verse 270 (padma.1.17.270)

ye ca vai brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhāsteṣāmāsye divaukasaḥ bhuñjate ca haviḥ kṣipraṁ kavyaṁ caivapitāmahāḥ

And those who are the finest Brahmins — through their mouths, the dwellers of heaven swiftly partake of the oblation, and the ancestors of the funeral offering.

Verse 271 (padma.1.17.271)

yūyaṁ hi dhāraṇe śaktāstrailokyasya na saṁśayaḥ prāṇāyāmena caikena sarve pūtā bhaviṣyatha

You are indeed capable of sustaining the three worlds, without doubt. By a single breath-restraint you shall all become purified,

Verse 272 (padma.1.17.272)

viśeṣātpuṣkare snātvā māṁ japtvā vedamātaraṁ pratigrahakṛtāndoṣānna prāpsyatha dvijotamāḥ

especially by bathing at Pushkara and reciting me, the Mother of the Vedas — O finest of the twice-born, you shall not incur the faults born of accepting gifts.

Verse 273 (padma.1.17.273)

puṣkare cānnadānena prītāḥ syuḥ sarvadevatāḥ ekasminbhojite viprekoṭyāḥ phalamavāpsyate

And at Pushkara, by the gift of food, all the gods become pleased. Feeding a single Brahmin there yields the fruit of feeding a million.

Verse 274 (padma.1.17.274)

brahmahatyādipāpāni duṣkṛtāni kṛtāni ca kariṣyaṁti narāssarve datvā yuṣmatkare dhanam

Whatever sins such as Brahmin-slaying, and whatever misdeeds, men commit — all these, by placing wealth in your hands,

Verse 275 (padma.1.17.275)

madīyena tu jāpyena pūjanīyastribhiḥ kṛtaiḥ brahmahatyāsamaṁ pāpaṁ tatkṣaṇādeva naśyati

and by worship performed with my recitation, done three times, are destroyed — even a sin equal to Brahmin-slaying is destroyed that very instant.

Verse 276 (padma.1.17.276)

daśabhirjanmabhirjātaṁ śatena ca purā kṛtaṁ triyugena sahasreṇa gāyatrī hanti kilbiṣaṁ

Whatever sin has accumulated over ten births, or was committed a hundred times before, or over a thousand years across three ages — Gayatri destroys that sin.

Verse 277 (padma.1.17.277)

evaṁ jñātvā sadā pūtā jāpye tu mama vai kṛte bhaviṣyadhvaṁ na saṁdeho nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

Knowing this, through recitation performed for my sake you shall always remain purified — there is no doubt in this, no need to deliberate over it.

Verse 278 (padma.1.17.278)

praṇavena trimātreṇa sārddhaṁjaptvā viśeṣataḥ pūtāḥ sarve na saṁdeho japtvāmāṁ śirasā saha

Reciting especially together with the three-syllabled Pranava, and reciting me together with the head-mantra, you shall all become pure without doubt.

Verse 279 (padma.1.17.279)

aṣṭākṣarā sthitā cāhaṁ jagadvyāptaṁ mayā ttvidaṁ mātāhaṁ sarvavedānāṁ padaiḥ sarveralaṁkṛtā

I abide in the form of the eight-syllabled mantra; by me this whole universe is pervaded. I am the mother of all the Vedas, adorned with all their metrical feet.

Verse 280 (padma.1.17.280)

japtvā māṁ bhaktitaḥ siddhiṁ yāsyaṁti dvijasattamāḥ prādhānyaṁ mama jāpyena sarveṣāṁ vo bhaviṣyati

Reciting me with devotion, the finest of the twice-born shall attain perfection; through recitation of me, primacy shall come to all of you.

Verse 281 (padma.1.17.281)

gāyatrīsāramātropi varaṁ vipraḥ susaṁyataḥ nāyaṁtritaścaturvedī sarvāśī sarvavikrayī

Even a self-restrained Brahmin who knows only the essence of the Gayatri is superior to one learned in all four Vedas who is unrestrained, indiscriminate in eating, and sells everything.

Verse 282 (padma.1.17.282)

yasmādvipreṣu sāvitryā śāpo dattaḥsadasyatha atra dattaṁ hutaṁ cāpi sarvamakṣayakārakam

Since the curse was given by Savitri upon the Brahmins in the assembly, whatever is given or offered here at Pushkara has thereby become imperishable in its fruit.

Verse 283 (padma.1.17.283)

datto varo mayā tena yuṣmākaṁ dvijasattamāḥ agnihotraparā viprāstrikālaṁ homadāyinaḥ

Therefore this boon has been granted by me to you, O finest of the twice-born. Brahmins devoted to the fire-oblation, performing the homa at all three times of day,

Verse 284 (padma.1.17.284)

svargaṁ te tu gamiṣyaṁti saikaviṁśatibhiḥ kulaiḥ evaṁ śakrasya viṣṇośca rudrasya pāvakasya ca

shall attain heaven together with twenty-one generations of their lineage.' Thus, having granted the excellent boon of the Gayatri to Shakra, Vishnu, Rudra, Pavaka,

Verse 285 (padma.1.17.285)

brahmaṇo brāhmaṇānāṁ ca gāyatrīvaramuttamam tasminvai puṣkare dattvā brahmaṇaḥpārśvagā'bhavat

Brahma, and the Brahmins, and having given it there at Pushkara, she took her place at Brahma's side.

Verse 286 (padma.1.17.286)

cāraṇaistu tadā''khyātaṁ lakṣmyā vai śāpakāraṇam yuvatīnāñca sarvāsāṁ śāpāñjñātvāpṛthakpṛthak

Then the celestial bards proclaimed the reason for Lakshmi's curse; and, having learned of the curses upon all the young women, one by one,

Verse 287 (padma.1.17.287)

lakṣmyāścaiva varaṁ prādādgāyatrī brahmaṇaḥ priyā akutsitānsadā sarvānkurvantī dhanaśobhanā

Gayatri, Brahma's beloved, granted a boon to Lakshmi as well — she who, ever keeping all things blameless, is resplendent with wealth —

Verse 288 (padma.1.17.288)

śobhiṣyase na saṁdehaḥ sarvebhyaḥ prītidāyinī ye tvayā vīkṣitāḥputri sarvete puṇyabhojanāḥ

'You shall surely remain resplendent, the bestower of affection upon all. My daughter, whoever is looked upon by you, all of them become enjoyers of merit;

Verse 289 (padma.1.17.289)

parityaktāstvayā ye tu sarve te duḥkhabhāginaḥ teṣāṁ jātiḥ kulaṁ śīlaṁ dharmaścaiva varānane

and whoever is abandoned by you, all of them become sharers in sorrow. Their caste, family, character, and dharma too, O fair-faced one,

Verse 290 (padma.1.17.290)

sabhāyāṁ te ca śobhaṁte dṛśyaṁte caiva pārthivaiḥ arthitvaṁ caiva teṣāṁ tu kariṣyaṁti dvijottamāḥ

shall shine forth in the assembly, and be regarded favorably even by kings; and the finest of Brahmins too shall honor their requests.

Verse 291 (padma.1.17.291)

saujanyaṁ teṣu kurvaṁti tvaṁ no bhrātā pitā guruḥ bāṁdhavopi na saṁdeho na jīveyaṁ tvayā vinā

They will show them kindness: "You are our brother, father, guru, and kinsman too, without doubt; I could not live without you."

Verse 292 (padma.1.17.292)
