The Colloquy of the Seven Sages

Chapter 18All chaptersChapter 20

Verse 1 (padma.1.19.1)

bhīṣma uvāca puṣkarasya ca naṁdāyāḥ śrutaṁ māhātmyamuttamaṁ ṛṣikoṭiryadāyātā puṣkare mukhadarśanāt

Bhishma said: 'I have heard the supreme glory of Pushkara and Nanda, and how a crore of sages came to Pushkara for the sake of seeing their own faces,

Verse 2 (padma.1.19.2)

sarvaiḥ surūpatā labdhā sarvametanmayā śrutaṁ yajñopavītairbhaktāni yāni tāni vadasva me

and how all obtained beauty — all this I have heard. Now tell me of those rites performed with the sacred thread.

Verse 3 (padma.1.19.3)

kathaṁ tīrthavibhāgastu kṛtastaissu mahātmabhiḥ āśrame yāni tīrthāni kṛtānyapi maharṣibhiḥ

How was the division of the sacred fords made by those great souls? What sacred fords were established by the great sages in that hermitage?

Verse 4 (padma.1.19.4)

padanyāsaḥ kṛtaḥ pūrvaṁ viṣṇunā yajñaparvate nāgaistatra paṁcatīrthaṁ kṛtaṁ taistu mahāviṣaiḥ

The footprint was first set by Vishnu upon the sacrificial mountain. There the five sacred fords were made by the great venomous Nagas.

Verse 5 (padma.1.19.5)

piṁḍapradānavāpī ca kena pūrvaṁ vinirmitā udaṅmukhī bhūmigatā kathaṁ gaṁgāsarasvatī

By whom, of old, was the well for pinda-offering built? How did the northward-facing, earth-bound Ganga-Sarasvati come to be?

Verse 6 (padma.1.19.6)

brāhmaṇairvedavidvadbhiḥ kathaṁ yātrā tripuṣkare kartavyā yatphalaṁ tasyā jāyate tadvadasva me

How should the pilgrimage to the three Pushkaras be performed by Brahmins learned in the Vedas — and what fruit results from it? Tell me that.'

Verse 7 (padma.1.19.7)

pulastya uvāca praśnabhāro mahāneṣa bhavatā parikalpitaḥ tadekāgramanā bhūtvā śṛṇu tīrtha mahāphalaṁ

Pulastya said: 'This is a great burden of questions you have posed. Therefore, becoming focused in mind, hear of the great fruit of the sacred ford.

Verse 8 (padma.1.19.8)

yasya hastau ca pādau ca manaścaiva susaṁyataṁ vidyātapaśca kīrtiśca sa tīrthaphalamaśnute

He whose hands, feet, and mind are well restrained, and who possesses learning, austerity, and fame — he obtains the fruit of the sacred ford.

Verse 9 (padma.1.19.9)

pratigrahādupāvṛttaḥ saṁtuṣṭo yenakena cit ahaṁkāranivṛttaśca sa tīrthaphalamaśnute

He who has turned away from accepting gifts, who is content with whatever comes, and free of egotism — he obtains the fruit of the sacred ford.

Verse 10 (padma.1.19.10)

akrodhanaśca rājeṁdra satyaśīlo dṛḍhavrataḥ ātmopamaśca bhūteṣu sa tīrthaphalamaśnute

O Indra among kings, he who is free from anger, truthful, firm in his vows, and who regards all beings as equal to himself — he obtains the fruit of the sacred ford.

Verse 11 (padma.1.19.11)

ṛṣīṇāṁ paramaṁ guhyamidaṁ bharatasattama pūrvaṁ yatra mahārāja satre paitāmahe tathā

O best of the Bharatas, this is the supreme secret of the sages. O great king, formerly, at that sacrificial session of the Grandsire,

Verse 12 (padma.1.19.12)

yatīnāmugratapasāṁ yeṣāṁ koṭiḥ samāgatā mukhadarśanamāśritya sthitāste jyeṣṭhapuṣkare

a crore of ascetics of severe austerity, having gathered, remained at Jyeshtha Pushkara, resorting to the Face-Seeing rite.

Verse 13 (padma.1.19.13)

surūpatāṁ parāṁ labdhvā prītāste munisattamāḥ harṣeṇa mahatāviṣṭā brahmadarśanakāṁkṣiṇaḥ

Having obtained supreme beauty, those finest of sages, pleased, filled with great joy, began to long for the sight of Brahma.

Verse 14 (padma.1.19.14)

yajñopavītaiste bhūmiṁ māpya sarve caturddiśaṁ kṛtvā tīrthaṁ vibhāgaṁ ca sthitā bhaktiparāyaṇāḥ

Measuring out the ground in all four directions with their sacred threads, and having made the division of the sacred ford, they remained devoted in devotion.

Verse 15 (padma.1.19.15)

āsannaśca tatasteṣāṁ tadā tuṣṭaḥ pitāmahaḥ koṭiṁ kṛtvā tadā teṣāṁ mānaṁ dṛṣṭvā manīṣiṇāṁ

Then, being near them, the Grandsire became pleased; having reckoned them a crore, seeing the honor due to those wise men,

Verse 16 (padma.1.19.16)

adyaprabhṛti yuṣmākaṁ dharmavṛddhirbhaviṣyati ihāgatya naro yo vai yadaṁgaṁ prathamaṁ jale

he said: 'From today your dharma shall increase. Whatever man comes here and, for the sake of beauty, first submerges any limb of his in the water,

Verse 17 (padma.1.19.17)

plāvaviṣyati rūpārthaṁ rūpitā tīrthakāritā bhaviṣyati na saṁdeho yojanāyatamaṁḍale

shall obtain beauty; this effect of the sacred ford shall extend, without doubt, within a circle one yojana across.

Verse 18 (padma.1.19.18)

ardhayojanavistāraṁ dīrghaṁ sārdhaṁ hi yojanam etatpramāṇaṁ tīrthasya ṛṣikoṭipravarttitam

Half a yojana in width, and one and a half yojanas in length — this is the measure of the sacred ford, established by that crore of sages.

Verse 19 (padma.1.19.19)

gamanādeva rājeṁdra puṣkarasya tvariṁdama rājasūyāśvamedhābhyāṁ phalamāpnoti mānavaḥ

O Indra among kings, O subduer of foes, merely by going to Pushkara a man obtains the fruit of the Rajasuya and Ashvamedha sacrifices.

Verse 20 (padma.1.19.20)

sarasvatī mahāpuṇyā praviṣṭā jyeṣṭhapuṣkare tatrabrahmādayo devā ṛṣayaḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ

The greatly holy Sarasvati entered Jyeshtha Pushkara. There Brahma and the other gods, sages, siddhas, and charanas

Verse 21 (padma.1.19.21)

abhigacchaṁti rājeṁdra caitraśukla caturdaśīṁ tatrābhiṣekaṁ kurvīta pitṛdevārcane rataḥ

gather, O Indra among kings, on the fourteenth day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra. There, one devoted to the worship of ancestors and gods should perform the ritual bath —

Verse 22 (padma.1.19.22)

gomedhaṁ ca tadāpnoti kulaṁ caiva samuddharet evaṁ tīrthavibhāgastu kṛtastaistu maharṣibhiḥ

he then obtains the fruit of a Gomedha sacrifice, and delivers his whole lineage. Thus was the division of the sacred ford made by the great sages —

Verse 23 (padma.1.19.23)

pitṝndevāṁśca santarpya viṣṇuloke mahīyate tatra snātvā bhavenmartyo vimalaścandramā yathā

having satisfied the ancestors and gods, a man is honored in Vishnu's world. Having bathed there, a mortal becomes spotless, like the moon,

Verse 24 (padma.1.19.24)

brahmalokamavāpnoti gatiṁ ca paramāṁ vrajet nṛloke devadevasya tīrthaṁ trailokyaviśrutam

attains Brahmaloka, and proceeds to the supreme goal. In the world of men, this sacred ford of the God of gods is renowned throughout the three worlds,

Verse 25 (padma.1.19.25)

puṣkaraṁ nāma vikhyātaṁ mahāpātakanāśanam daśakoṭisahasrāṇi tīrthānāṁ vai mahīpate

known by the name Pushkara, the destroyer of the greatest sins. O lord of the earth, among ten crore thousand sacred fords,

Verse 26 (padma.1.19.26)

sānnidhyaṁ puṣkare yeṣāṁ trisandhyaṁ kulanandana ādityā vasavo rudrāssādhyāśca sa marudgaṇāḥ

O joy of the lineage, where the presence of these hosts occurs at the three daily junctures — the Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, Sadhyas, and the host of Maruts,

Verse 27 (padma.1.19.27)

gandharvāpsarasaścaiva nityaṁ sannihitā vibhoḥ yatra devāstapastaptvā daityā brahmarṣayastathā

the Gandharvas and Apsaras too, are ever present near the Lord; where the gods performed austerities, and likewise the Daityas and Brahmarshis,

Verse 28 (padma.1.19.28)

divya yogā mahārāja puṇyena mahatānvitāḥ manasāpyabhikāmasya puṣkarāṇi manasvinaḥ

O great king, with divine yogic attainments, endowed with great merit — for the wise one who merely desires it in his mind, the Pushkaras

Verse 29 (padma.1.19.29)

pūyante sarvapāpāni nākapṛṣṭhe sa modate tasmiṁstīrthe mahārāja nityameva pitāmahaḥ

purify all sins; he rejoices upon the surface of heaven. O great king, in that sacred ford, ever, the Grandsire

Verse 30 (padma.1.19.30)

uvāsa paramaprīto devadānavasammataḥ puṣkareṣu mahārāja devāssarṣipurogamāḥ

dwelt, supremely pleased, honored by both gods and Danavas. O great king, at the Pushkaras, the gods, with the sages at their head,

Verse 31 (padma.1.19.31)

siddhiṁ ca samanuprāptāḥ puṇyena mahatānvitāḥ tatrābhiṣekaṁ yaḥ kuryātpitṛdevārcane rataḥ

endowed with great merit, attained perfection there. Whoever, devoted to the worship of ancestors and gods, performs the ritual bath there,

Verse 32 (padma.1.19.32)

aśvamedhāddaśaguṇaṁ pravadaṁti manīṣiṇaḥ apyekaṁ bhojayedvipraṁ puṣkarāraṇyamāśritaḥ

the wise say that he obtains tenfold the fruit of an Ashvamedha. If one, dwelling in the Pushkara forest, feeds even a single Brahmin,

Verse 33 (padma.1.19.33)

annena tena saṁprītā koṭirbhavati pūjitā tenāsau karmaṇā bhīṣma pretya ceha ca modate

satisfied by that food, it is as though a crore of Brahmins have been worshipped. O Bhishma, by that deed he rejoices both in this world and the next.

Verse 34 (padma.1.19.34)

śākairmūlaiḥ phalairvāpi yena vā varttayetsvayam tadvai dadyādbrāhmaṇāya śraddhāvānanasūyakaḥ

Whatever he himself lives on, be it greens, roots, or fruit, that very thing, with faith and free of envy, should be given to a Brahmin,

Verse 35 (padma.1.19.35)

tenaiva prāpnuyātprājño hayamedhaphalaṁ naraḥ brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ śūdro vā rājasattama

by that alone the wise man, whether Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, or Shudra, O best of kings, obtains the fruit of a horse-sacrifice.

Verse 36 (padma.1.19.36)

paitāmahaṁ saraḥ puṇyaṁ puṣkaraṁ nāma nāmataḥ vaikhānasānāṁ siddhānāṁ munīnāṁ puṇyadaṁ hi yat

The Grandsire's holy lake, known by the name Pushkara, is the giver of merit to the Vaikhanasa ascetics, the siddhas, and the sages;

Verse 37 (padma.1.19.37)

sarasvatī puṇyatamā yasmādyātā mahārṇavam ādidevo mahāyogī yatrāste madhusūdanaḥ

the most holy Sarasvati, from whence she went to the great ocean; where the primal god, the great yogi Madhusudana, resides,

Verse 38 (padma.1.19.38)

khyāta ādivarāheti nāmnā tridaśapūjitaḥ hīnavarṇāśca ye varṇāstīrthe paitāmahe gatāḥ

renowned by the name Adi-Varaha, worshipped by the thirty gods — even those of low caste who have gone to this sacred ford of the Grandsire,

Verse 39 (padma.1.19.39)

na viyoniṁ vrajaṁtyete snātvā tīrthe mahātmanaḥ kārtikyāṁ ca viśeṣeṇa yobhigacchettu puṣkaraṁ

having bathed at that great-souled one's sacred ford, they do not attain a lower birth. Especially on Kartiki day, whoever goes to Pushkara,

Verse 40 (padma.1.19.40)

phalaṁ tatrākṣayaṁ tasya bhavatītyanuśuśruma sāyaṁprātaḥ smaredyastu puṣkarāṇi kṛtāṁjali

his fruit there becomes imperishable — so we have heard. Whoever, morning and evening, with joined hands, calls the Pushkaras to mind,

Verse 41 (padma.1.19.41)

upaspṛṣṭaṁ bhavettena sarvatīrthe tu kaurava janmaprabhṛti yatpāpaṁ striyo vā puruṣasya vā

O Kaurava, by that he becomes as one who has touched all the sacred fords. Whatever sin, from birth onward, whether of a woman or of a man,

Verse 42 (padma.1.19.42)

puṣkare snānamātreṇa sarvametatpraṇaśyati yathāsurāṇāṁ pravaraḥ sarveṣāṁ tu pitāmahaḥ

all of it is destroyed merely by bathing at Pushkara. Just as the foremost among the asuras is like the grandfather of them all,

Verse 43 (padma.1.19.43)

tathaiva puṣkaraṁ tīrthaṁ tīrthānāmādirucyate ta ddṛṣṭvā daśavarṣāṇi puṣkare niyataḥ śuciḥ

so too is the sacred ford of Pushkara called the foremost of all sacred fords. Having seen it, and remaining disciplined and pure at Pushkara for ten years,

Verse 44 (padma.1.19.44)

kratūnsarvānavāpnoti brahmalokaṁ sa gacchati yastu varṣaśataṁ pūrṇamagnihotramupāsate

a man obtains the fruit of all sacrifices, and he goes to Brahmaloka. And whoever, for a full hundred years, worships the sacred fire,

Verse 45 (padma.1.19.45)

kārtikīṁ vā vasedekāṁ puṣkare samameva tu puṣkare duṣkaro homaḥ puṣkare duṣkaraṁ tapaḥ

or dwells at Pushkara even for a single Kartiki, obtains an equal fruit. At Pushkara, fire-offering is difficult to perform; at Pushkara, austerity is difficult;

Verse 46 (padma.1.19.46)

puṣkare duṣkaraṁ dānaṁ vāsaścaiva suduṣkaraḥ brāhmaṇo vedavidvāṁstu gatvā vai jyeṣṭhapuṣkaraṁ

at Pushkara, giving is difficult; and dwelling there is exceedingly difficult. A Brahmin learned in the Vedas, having gone to Jyeshtha Pushkara,

Verse 47 (padma.1.19.47)

snānādbhavenmokṣabhāgī śrāddhena pitṛtārakaḥ nāmamātropi yo vipro gatvā saṁdhyāmupāsate

through bathing becomes a partaker of liberation, and through shraddha becomes the deliverer of his ancestors. Even a Brahmin in name only, who goes there and performs the twilight worship,

Verse 48 (padma.1.19.48)

varṣāṇi dvādaśaiveha tena saṁdhyā hyupāsitā bhavettu nātra saṁdehaḥ purā proktaṁ svayaṁbhuvā

shall thereby have performed, as it were, twelve years of twilight worship here — there is no doubt of this; it was declared of old by the Self-Existent one.

Verse 49 (padma.1.19.49)

sāvitrī kathito doṣaḥ kule tasya na jāyate yā patnī dadate bhartuḥ saṁdhyopāstiṁ kariṣyataḥ

The fault spoken of by Savitri does not arise in that family — the family of the wife who performs the twilight worship on behalf of her husband,

Verse 50 (padma.1.19.50)

karakeṇa tu tāmreṇa toyaṁ muktā divaṁ vrajet brahmalokamanuprāpya tiṣṭhati brahmaṇo dinaṁ

offering water with a copper vessel — freed thus, she goes to heaven. Having attained Brahmaloka, she dwells there for a full day of Brahma.

Verse 51 (padma.1.19.51)

ekākinā gatenāpi saṁdhyā vaṁdyā yathākramaṁ pauṣkareṇātha toyena bhṛṁgāre nihitena tu

Even having gone alone, the twilight worship should be performed in due order; with Pushkara water kept in a vessel,

Verse 52 (padma.1.19.52)

tenāpi dvādaśābdāni saṁdhyopāstā na saṁśayaḥ bhavetsamīpagā patnī kurvataḥ pitṛtarpaṇaṁ

by that too, twelve years' worth of twilight worship is accomplished, without doubt. His wife, who remains near him and performs the ancestor-offering,

Verse 53 (padma.1.19.53)

dakṣiṇāṁ diśamāsthāya gāyatryā rājasattama pitṝṇāṁ paramā tṛptiḥ kriyate dvādaśābdikī

O best of kings, facing the southern direction, together with the Gayatri — the supreme satisfaction of the ancestors, equal to twelve years, is thereby achieved.

Verse 54 (padma.1.19.54)

yugasahasraṁ piṇḍena śrāddhenānantyamaśnute etadarthaṁ hi vidvāṁsaḥ kurvaṁte dārasaṁgrahaṁ

By a single pinda-offering, endless fruit equal to a thousand ages of shraddha is obtained. It is for this very reason that the wise undertake marriage,

Verse 55 (padma.1.19.55)

tīrthe gattvā pradāsyāmaḥ piṁḍānvai śrāddhapūrvakaṁ teṣāṁ putrā dhanaṁ dhānyamavicchinnā ca saṁtatiḥ

thinking, 'having gone to the sacred ford, we shall offer pinda-offerings with shraddha' — their sons, wealth, grain, and unbroken lineage,

Verse 56 (padma.1.19.56)

bhavedvai nātra saṁdeha etadāha pitāmahaḥ tarpayitvā pitṝndevānagniṣṭomaphalaṁ labhet

shall surely result, without doubt — so said the Grandsire. Having satisfied the ancestors and gods, a man obtains the fruit of an Agnishtoma sacrifice.

Verse 57 (padma.1.19.57)

āśramānapi te vacmi śṛṇuṣvaikamanā nṛpa agastyena kṛtaścātra āśramo devasaṁmitaḥ

Now I shall tell you also of the hermitages, O king — listen with a focused mind. Here, an hermitage equal to the gods was built by Agastya.

Verse 58 (padma.1.19.58)

saptarṣīṇāṁ purā cātra āśramo devasammataḥ brahmarṣīṇāṁ tathā cātra manūnāṁ paramastathā

Here too, of old, was the god-honored hermitage of the Seven Sages; and likewise here, that of the Brahmarshis, and the supreme hermitage of the Manus,

Verse 59 (padma.1.19.59)

nāgānāṁ ca purī ramyā yajñaparvatarodhasi agastyasya mahārāja prabhāvamamitātmanaḥ

and the delightful city of the Nagas, on the slope of the sacrificial mountain. O great king, the power of Agastya, that sage of boundless self,

Verse 60 (padma.1.19.60)

kathayāmi samāsena śṛṇu tvaṁ susamāhitaḥ pūrvaṁ kṛtayuge bhīṣma dānavā yuddhadurmadāḥ

I shall tell in brief — listen attentively. O Bhishma, formerly in the Krita Yuga, Danavas maddened with battle —

Verse 61 (padma.1.19.61)

kāleyā iti vikhyātā gaṇāḥ paramadāruṇāḥ te tu vṛtraṁ samāśritya devānhaṁtuṁ samudyatāḥ

known by the name Kaleya, a most dreadful host — taking refuge with Vritra, they became prepared to slay the gods.

Verse 62 (padma.1.19.62)

tato devāḥ samudvignā brahmāṇamupatasthire kṛtāṁjalīṁstu tānsarvānparameṣṭhītyuvāca ha

Then the distressed gods approached Brahma for refuge. To all of them, with hands joined, the Supreme Lord said —

Verse 63 (padma.1.19.63)

viditaṁ me surāḥ sarvaṁ yadvaḥ kāryaṁ cikīrṣitaṁ tamupāyaṁ pravakṣyāmi yathā vṛtraṁ vadhiṣyatha

'O gods, I know all that you wish to accomplish. I shall tell you the means by which you shall slay Vritra.

Verse 64 (padma.1.19.64)

dadhīciriti vikhyāto mahānṛṣirudāradhīḥ taṁ gatvā sahitāssarve varaṁ ca pratiyācata

There is a great sage renowned as Dadhichi, of noble intellect. Go to him, all together, and ask him for a boon.

Verse 65 (padma.1.19.65)

sa vo dāsyati dharmātmā suprītenāṁtarātmanā sa vācyaḥ sahitaiḥ sarvairbhavadbhirjayakāṁkṣibhiḥ

That righteous soul will grant it to you with a truly pleased inner mind. He should be addressed by all of you together, desiring victory —

Verse 66 (padma.1.19.66)

svānyasthīni prayacchasva trailokyahitakāṁkṣayā sa śarīraṁ samutsṛjya svānyasthīni pradāsyati

"For the welfare of the three worlds, give us your own bones." He, giving up his body, shall give his own bones.

Verse 67 (padma.1.19.67)

tasyāsthibhirmahāghoraṁ vajraṁ saṁkriyatāṁ dṛḍhaṁ mahacchatruhanaṁ divyaṁ tadastramaśaniḥ smṛtaṁ

With his bones let a most terrible and firm vajra be fashioned; this great, divine, enemy-slaying weapon is known by the name 'ashani.'

Verse 68 (padma.1.19.68)

tena vajreṇa vai vṛtraṁ vadhiṣyati śatakratuḥ etadvaḥ sarvamākhyātaṁ tasmātsarvaṁ vidhīyatāṁ

With that very vajra, Shatakratu shall slay Vritra. All this has been told to you — therefore let all of this be carried out.'

Verse 69 (padma.1.19.69)

evamuktāstato devā anujñāpya pitāmahaṁ śatakratuṁ puraskṛtya dadhīcerāśramaṁ yayuḥ

Thus addressed, the gods, having taken leave of the Grandsire, with Shatakratu at their head, went to Dadhichi's hermitage,

Verse 70 (padma.1.19.70)

sarasvatyāḥ pare pāre nānādrumalatāvṛtaṁ ṣaṭpadodgītaninadairudghuṣṭaṁ sāmagairiva

which lay on the far bank of the Sarasvati, covered with various trees and creepers, resounding with the hum of bees like the chanting of Samavedin singers,

Verse 71 (padma.1.19.71)

puṁskokilaravonmiśraṁ jīvaṁ jīvakanāditam mahiṣaiśca varāhaiśca sṛmaraiścamarairapi

mingled with the calls of male cuckoos, echoing with the cry of the jivamjiva bird, thronged with buffaloes, boars, and both kinds of deer,

Verse 72 (padma.1.19.72)

tatratatrānucaritaiḥ śārdūlabhayavarjitaiḥ kareṇubhirvāraṇaiśca prabhinnakaraṭāmukhaiḥ

which roamed here and there, free from fear of tigers; and thronged too with elephants and their mates, their temples streaming with musth,

Verse 73 (padma.1.19.73)

svarodgāraiśca krīḍadbhiḥ samaṁtādanunāditaṁ siṁhavyāghrairmahānādaṁ nadadbhiranunāditaṁ

playing and echoing all around with their calls; resounding with the great roars of lions and tigers,

Verse 74 (padma.1.19.74)

mayūraiścāpi saṁlīnairguhākaṁdaravāsibhiḥ teṣu teṣu ca kuṁjeṣu nāditaṁ sumanoramaṁ

and also thronged with peacocks nestled, dwelling in caves and ravines — resounding delightfully in grove after grove,

Verse 75 (padma.1.19.75)

triviṣṭapasamaprakhyaṁ dadhīcyāśramamāgaman tatrāpaśyandadhīciṁ taṁ divākarasamaprabham

resembling heaven itself, they arrived at that hermitage. There they saw that Dadhichi, radiant as the sun.

Verse 76 (padma.1.19.76)

jājvalyamānaṁ vapuṣā yathā lakṣmyā caturbhujam tasya pādau surā rājannabhivaṁdya praṇamya ca ayācaṁta varaṁ sarve yathoktaṁ parameṣṭhinā

blazing in form as if with Lakshmi's own splendor, four-armed. O king, the gods venerated his feet and bowed, and all asked for the boon, exactly as declared by the Supreme Lord.

Verse 77 (padma.1.19.77)

tato dadhīciḥ paramapratītaḥ surottamāṁstānidamityuvāca karomi yadvo hitamadya devāḥ svaṁ vāpi dehaṁ tvahamutsṛjāmi

Then Dadhichi, supremely pleased, said this to those finest of gods: 'O gods, whatever is good for you, I shall do it today — I shall even give up my own body.'

Verse 78 (padma.1.19.78)

tānevamuktvā dvipadāṁ variṣṭhaḥ prāṇāṁstato'sau sahasotsasarja surāstadasthīni savāsavāste yathopayogaṁ jagṛhuḥ sma tasya

Having said this, that foremost of bipeds at once gave up his life-breaths. The gods, together with Vasava, took his bones as was fitting.

Verse 79 (padma.1.19.79)

prahṛṣṭarūpāśca jayāya devāstvaṣṭāramāsādya tamarthamūcuḥ tvaṣṭā tu teṣāṁ vacanaṁ niśamya prahṛṣṭarūpaḥ prayataḥ prayatnāt

Delighted, the gods went to Tvashta for the sake of victory and told him their purpose. Tvashta, hearing their words, delighted, with full effort,

Verse 80 (padma.1.19.80)

cakāra vajraṁ bhṛśamugravīryaṁ kṛtvā ca śastraṁ tamuvāca hṛṣṭaḥ anena śastrapravareṇa deva bhasmīkuruṣvādya surārimugraṁ

made a vajra of tremendous, terrible power; and having made that weapon, delighted, said to them: 'O gods, with this finest of weapons, reduce the fierce enemy of the gods to ashes today.

Verse 81 (padma.1.19.81)

tato hatāriḥ sagaṇaḥ sukhaṁ tvaṁ praśādhi kṛtsnaṁ tridivaṁ diviṣṭhaḥ tvaṣṭrā tathoktastu puraṁdaraśca vajraṁ prahṛṣṭaḥ prayato hyagṛhṇāt

Then, having slain your enemy, together with your host, rule the entire three worlds happily, dwelling in heaven.' Thus addressed by Tvashta, Purandara, delighted and composed, took the vajra.

Verse 82 (padma.1.19.82)

Then, equipped with the vajra, honored by the gods, he approached that Vritra, who stood covering the sky and the earth,

Verse 83 (padma.1.19.83)

kālakeyairmahākāyaissamaṁtādabhirakṣitaṁ samudyata praharaṇaiḥ saśṛṁgairiva parvataiḥ

guarded on all sides by huge-bodied Kaleyas, weapons raised, like mountains with their peaks.

Verse 84 (padma.1.19.84)

tato yuddhaṁ samabhavaddevānāṁ saha dānavaiḥ muhūrtaṁ bharataśreṣṭha lokatrāsakaraṁ mahat

Then a battle broke out between the gods and the Danavas — O best of the Bharatas, for a moment, a great, world-terrifying battle.

Verse 85 (padma.1.19.85)

udyataiḥ pratisṛṣṭānāṁ khaḍgānāṁ vīrabāhubhiḥ āsītsutumulaḥ śabdaḥ śarīrairabhipāṭitaiḥ

From swords raised and hurled by heroic arms, a tremendous tumultuous sound arose, from bodies being cut apart,

Verse 86 (padma.1.19.86)

śirobhiḥ prapatadbhiścāpyaṁtarikṣānmahītalaṁ tālairiva mahīpāla vṛtaṁ taireva dṛśyate

and from heads falling from the sky to the earth's surface — O protector of the earth, the ground appeared as if covered with palm-fruits.

Verse 87 (padma.1.19.87)

te hemakavacā bhūtvā kāleyāḥ parighāyudhāḥ tridaśānabhyavartanta dāvadagdhā iva drumāḥ

Those Kaleyas, clad in golden armor, armed with iron clubs, advanced against the thirty gods, like trees scorched by a forest fire.

Verse 88 (padma.1.19.88)

teṣāṁ vegavatāṁ vegaṁ sahitānāṁ pradhāvatām na śekuḥ sahitāḥ soḍhuṁ bhagnāste prādravanbhayāt

The gods, even together, could not withstand the onrush of those swift, charging Danavas; broken, they fled in fear.

Verse 89 (padma.1.19.89)

tāndṛṣṭvā dravato bhītānsahasrākṣaḥ puraṁdaraḥ vṛtraṁ ca varddhamānaṁ tu kaśmalaṁ mahadāviśat

Seeing them fleeing in terror, thousand-eyed Purandara, and seeing Vritra growing ever greater, a great faintness overcame him.

Verse 90 (padma.1.19.90)

taṁ śakraṁ kaśmalāviṣṭaṁ dṛṣṭvā viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ svatejo vyadadhācchakre balamasya vivardhayan

Seeing Shakra thus overcome, the eternal Vishnu infused his own splendor into Shakra, increasing his strength.

Verse 91 (padma.1.19.91)

viṣṇunāpyāyitaṁ śakraṁ dṛṣṭvāde vagaṇāstadā sarve tejassamādadhyustathā brahmarṣayo'malāḥ

Seeing Shakra thus reinforced by Vishnu, then all the hosts of gods, and likewise the pure Brahmarshis, bestowed their own splendor upon him as well.

Verse 92 (padma.1.19.92)

sa samāpyāyitaḥ śakro viṣṇunā daivataiḥ saha ṛṣibhiśca mahābhāgairbalavānsamapadyata

Thus reinforced by Vishnu, together with the gods and the greatly blessed sages, Shakra became powerful.

Verse 93 (padma.1.19.93)

jñātvā balasthaṁ tridaśādhipaṁ taṁ nanāda vṛtrassumahāni nādam tasya praṇādena dharā diśaśca khaṁ dyaurnagāśceti cacāla sarvaṁ

Knowing that lord of the thirty gods to be powerful now, Vritra roared a tremendous roar; by that roaring, the earth, the directions, the sky, the heavens, and the mountains all shook.

Verse 94 (padma.1.19.94)

tato maheṁdraḥ paramābhitaptaḥ śrutvā ravaṁ ghorataraṁ mahāṁtam bhayena magnastvaritaṁ mumoca vajraṁ mahāntaṁ khalu tasya śīrṣe

Then Mahendra, greatly tormented, hearing that most terrible and mighty roar, sunk in fear, swiftly hurled his great vajra straight at his head.

Verse 95 (padma.1.19.95)

sa śakravajrābhihataḥ papāta mahāsvanaḥ kāṁcanamālyadhārī yathā mahāśailavaraḥ purastātsa maṁdaro viṣṇukarātpramuktaḥ

Struck by Shakra's vajra, he, wearing his golden garland, fell with a great crash — like the finest of great mountains, Mandara, once fallen from Vishnu's hand.

Verse 96 (padma.1.19.96)

tasminhate daityavare bhayārtaḥ śakraḥ pradudrāva saraḥ praveṣṭuṁ vajraṁ ca mene svakarātpramuktaṁ vṛtraṁ bhayāccaiva hataṁ na paśyati

When that foremost Daitya was slain, Shakra, stricken with fear, ran to plunge into a lake; he thought the vajra had merely slipped from his own hand, and out of fear did not perceive that Vritra had been slain.

Verse 97 (padma.1.19.97)

sarve ca devā muditāḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ saharṣayaścainamatho stuvaṁti śeṣāṁśca daityāṁstvaritaṁ sametya jaghnuḥ surā vṛtravadhābhitaptān

All the gods, delighted and overjoyed, together with the sages, praised him; and the gods, swiftly gathering, slew the remaining Daityas, who were tormented by Vritra's death.

Verse 98 (padma.1.19.98)

te vadhyamānāstridaśaistadānīṁ mahāsurā vāyusamānavegāḥ samudramevāviviśurbhayārtāḥ praviśya caivodadhimaprameyam

Being slain then by the thirty gods, those great asuras, swift as the wind, terror-stricken, plunged into that very ocean, that immeasurable sea.

Verse 99 (padma.1.19.99)

jhaṣākulaṁ ratnasamākulaṁ ca tadā sma maṁtraṁ sahitāḥ pracakruḥ tatra sma kecinmatiniścayajñāstāṁstānupāyānpariciṁtayaṁtaḥ

In that ocean, full of fish and teeming with jewels, they then held counsel together; some among them, of resolute judgment, began pondering various strategies.

Verse 100 (padma.1.19.100)

bhayārditā devanikāyataptāstrailokyanāśāya matiṁ pracakruḥ teṣāṁ tu tatra kṣayakālayogādghorāmatiściṁtayatāṁ babhūva

Tormented by fear and scorched by the assault of the host of gods, they resolved upon the destruction of the three worlds. There, through the working of the time of their own doom, as they deliberated, a terrible resolve arose in them —

Verse 101 (padma.1.19.101)

ye saṁti vidyātapasopapannāsteṣāṁ vināśaḥ prathamaṁ ca kāryaḥ lokāśca sarve tapasā dhriyaṁte tasmāttvaradhvaṁ tapasaḥ kṣayāya

'Those who possess learning and austerity, their destruction must be done first. All the worlds are sustained by austerity — therefore hasten to destroy austerity.'

Verse 102 (padma.1.19.102)

ye saṁti keciddhi vasuṁdharāyāṁ tapasvino dharmavidaśca tajjñāḥ teṣāṁ vadhaścakriyatāṁ hi kṣipraṁ teṣu praṇaṣṭeṣu jagadvinaṣṭam

'Whatever ascetics, knowers and upholders of dharma there are upon the earth, their destruction should be carried out quickly — with them destroyed, the world will be destroyed.'

Verse 103 (padma.1.19.103)

evaṁ hi sarve gatabuddhibhāvā jagadvināśe paramaprahṛṣṭāḥ durgaṁsamāśritya mahormimaṁtaṁ ratnākaraṁ vāruṇamālayaṁ sma

Thus all of them, their minds fixed on this, supremely delighted at the destruction of the world, took refuge in a fortress — the great-waved treasury of gems, Varuna's own abode.

Verse 104 (padma.1.19.104)

samudraṁ te samāsādya vāruṇaṁ tvaṁbhasāṁ nidhiṁ kāleyāssamapadyaṁta trailokyasya vināśane

Having reached that ocean of Varuna, the reservoir of waters, the Kaleyas set about the destruction of the three worlds.

Verse 105 (padma.1.19.105)

te rātrau samabhikruddhā babhakṣustāṁstadā munīn āśrameṣu ca ye saṁti puṇyeṣvāyataneṣu ca

At night, filled with fury, they devoured those sages who dwelt in hermitages and in sacred sanctuaries.

Verse 106 (padma.1.19.106)

vasiṣṭhasyāśrame viprā bhakṣitāstairdurātmabhiḥ aśītiḥ śatamaṣṭau ca vane cānye tapasvinaḥ

At Vasishtha's hermitage, one hundred and eighty-eight Brahmins were devoured by those evil-souled ones, and other ascetics in the forest as well.

Verse 107 (padma.1.19.107)

cyavanasyāśramaṁ gatvā puṇyaṁ dvijaniṣevitam phalamūlāśanānāṁ hi munīnāṁ bhakṣitaṁ śataṁ

Having gone to Chyavana's hermitage, a holy place frequented by the twice-born, a hundred sages who lived on fruits and roots were devoured.

Verse 108 (padma.1.19.108)

evaṁ rātrau sma kurvaṁto viviśuścārṇavaṁ divā bharadvājāśramaṁ gatvā niyatā brahmacāriṇaḥ

Thus, doing this at night, they would enter the ocean by day. Having gone to Bharadvaja's hermitage, disciplined brahmacharins,

Verse 109 (padma.1.19.109)

vātāhārāṁbubhakṣāśca viṁśatiśca niṣūditāḥ evaṁ krameṇa bhakṣārthaṁ munīnāṁ dānavāstadā

who lived on air, water, and food — twenty of them were slain. Thus, in succession, for the purpose of devouring sages, the Danavas at that time

Verse 110 (padma.1.19.110)

niśāyāṁ paryadhāvaṁta śaktā bhujabalāśrayāt kālena mahatā te vai jaghnurmunigaṇānbahūn

ran about at night, empowered by the strength of their arms. Over a long time they slew many groups of sages.

Verse 111 (padma.1.19.111)

na caitānavabudhyaṁta manujā manujādhipa nisvādhyāyavaṣaṭkāraṁ naṣṭayajñotsavakriyam

O lord of men, the people did not comprehend this. Devoid of Vedic recitation and the sacred exclamation, its sacrificial festival-rites destroyed,

Verse 112 (padma.1.19.112)

jagadāsīnnirutsāhaṁ kāleyabhayapīḍitaṁ evaṁ prakṣīyamāṇāste mānavā manujeśvara

the world became dispirited, oppressed by fear of the Kaleyas. O lord of men, thus, as those people were being diminished,

Verse 113 (padma.1.19.113)

ātmatrāṇaparā bhītāḥ prādravaṁstu diśo daśa kecidguhāṁ praviviśurvikīrṇāścāpare dvijāḥ

intent only on self-preservation, fled in fear in the ten directions. Some entered caves, other twice-born ones scattered.

Verse 114 (padma.1.19.114)

apare ca bhayodvignā bhayātprāṇānsamatyajan kecittatra maheṣvāsāḥ śūrāḥ paramadarpitāḥ

And others, agitated by fear, gave up their very lives out of terror. There, some, great archers, heroic, extremely proud,

Verse 146 (padma.1.19.146)

nāhamātmecchayā śailaṁ karomyenaṁ pradakṣiṇam eṣa mārgaḥ pradiṣṭo me yenedaṁ nirmitaṁ jagat

'It is not by my own wish that I circumambulate this mountain. This is the path prescribed for me by the one who fashioned this universe.'

Verse 147 (padma.1.19.147)

Then they went to that sage dwelling in his hermitage, the foremost of ascetics devoted to dharma, Agastya, of most wondrous, blazing power; the gathered gods said to that noble one —

Verse 150 (padma.1.19.150)

nivṛtte mayi śaileṁdra tato vardhasva kāmataḥ pulastya uvāca adyāpi dakṣiṇāddeśādvāruṇirna nivartate

O king of mountains, once I have returned, then grow as much as you wish.' Pulastya said: Even to this day, the son of Varuna has not returned from that southern land.

Verse 155 (padma.1.19.155)

All this I have told you — how, through Agastya's power, the Vindhya does not grow — since you asked me about it.

Verse 156 (padma.1.19.156)

evaṁ tvayecchema kṛte maharṣe mahārṇavaṁ pīyamānaṁ samagram tato vihanyāma ca sānubaṁdhaṁ kāleyasaṁjñaṁ suravidviṣāṁ balam

If, O great sage, this great ocean is made to be drunk entirely by you in this way, then we shall destroy, along with their kin, the army of the enemies of the gods called the Kaleyas.'

Verse 160 (padma.1.19.160)

evamuktvā tato'gacchatsamudraṁ nidhimaṁbhasām tapaḥsiddhaiśca munibhiḥ sārdhaṁ devaiśca suvrata

Having said this, he then went to the ocean, the reservoir of waters, O one of noble vows, together with the sages perfected in austerity and with the gods.

Verse 162 (padma.1.19.162)

seeming to laugh with its masses of foam, stumbling as if in its own ravines, thronged with various sea-creatures, filled with various flocks of birds.

Verse 165 (padma.1.19.165)

agastyasahitā devāḥ sagaṁdharvamahoragāḥ ṛṣayaśca mahābhāgāḥ samāsedurmahodadhim

The gods, together with Agastya, accompanied by Gandharvas and great serpents, and the greatly blessed sages, approached that great ocean.

Verse 167 (padma.1.19.167)

pātukāmaḥ samudraṁ ca agastya ṛṣisattamaḥ eṣa lokahitārthāya pibāmi varuṇālayam

bhavatāṁ yadanuṣṭheyaṁ tacchīghraṁ saṁvidhīyatām etāvaduktvā vacanaṁ maitrāvaruṇiragrataḥ

Whatever you must do, do it quickly.' Having said just this much, the son of Mitra and Varuna, before them all,

Verse 169 (padma.1.19.169)

samudramapibatkruddhassarvalokasya paśyataḥ pīyamānaṁ samudraṁ tu dṛṣṭvā devāḥ savāsavāḥ

in resolve, drank the ocean, as the whole world watched. Seeing the ocean being drunk up, the gods, together with Vasava,

Verse 170 (padma.1.19.170)

Verse 171 (padma.1.19.171)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ rājanpratigraho ghoro madhvāsvādo viṣopamaḥ tajjānatāṁ naḥ kasmāttvaṁ kuruṣe sampralobhanaṁ

The sages said: 'O king, accepting gifts is terrible, like a taste of honey that is actually poison. Knowing this, why do you tempt us so?

Verse 231 (padma.1.19.231)

daśasūnā samaścakrī daśacakrisamo dhvajī daśadhvajisamā veśyā daśaveśyāsamo nṛpaḥ

A wheelwright is equal to ten slaughterhouses; a flag-bearer is equal to ten wheelwrights; a courtesan is equal to ten flag-bearers; and a king is equal to ten courtesans.

Verse 232 (padma.1.19.232)

daśasūnā sahasrāṇi yo vāhayati śauṁḍikaḥ tena tulyastato rājā ghorastasya pratigrahaḥ

Whoever operates ten thousand slaughterhouses, that liquor-seller — the king is equal to him; therefore accepting gifts from him is terrible.

Verse 233 (padma.1.19.233)

yo rājñaḥ pratigṛhṇāti brāhmaṇo lobhamohitaḥ tāmisrādiṣu ghoreṣu narakeṣu sa pacyate

Whatever Brahmin, deluded by greed, accepts gifts from a king, he is cooked in the terrible hells beginning with Tamisra.

Verse 234 (padma.1.19.234)

tadgaccha kuśalaṁ testu saha dānena pārthiva anyeṣāṁ dīyatāmetadityuktvā te vanaṁ yayuḥ

Therefore, O king, take your gift and go your way in peace; give it to someone else.' Having said this, they went into the forest.

Verse 235 (padma.1.19.235)

atha rājñaḥsamādeśāttatra gatvātha maṁtriṇaḥ uduṁbarāṇi vyakiranhemagarbhāṇi bhūtale

Then, by the king's command, his ministers, going there, scattered fig-fruits filled with gold upon the ground.

Verse 236 (padma.1.19.236)

Then, as they gathered food and also began picking up those fig-fruits, finding them heavy, Atri said these should not be taken —

Verse 237 (padma.1.19.237)

atriruvāca nāsmahe mūḍhavijñānā nāsmahe maṁdabuddhayaḥ haimānīmāni jānīmaḥ pratibuddhāḥ sma jñāninaḥ

Atri said: 'We are not confused in understanding, we are not dull of intellect. We know these are made of gold — we are awakened, knowing ones.

Verse 238 (padma.1.19.238)

ihaivedaṁ vasuprītyai pretya vaikuṁṭhitodayaṁ tasmānna grāhyamevaitatsukhamānaṁtyamicchatā

This serves wealth only in this world; in the world beyond, its result is only entanglement. Therefore one who desires true, unending happiness should not accept it at all.

Verse 239 (padma.1.19.239)

śatenaguṇitaṁ niṣkaṁ sahasreṇa samanvitam yaścānyataḥ pratīcchetsa pāpiṣṭāṁ labhate gatim

Whoever accepts a gold coin multiplied a hundredfold, or even a thousandfold, from another, attains the most sinful destination.

Verse 240 (padma.1.19.240)

yatpṛthivyāṁ vrīhiyavaṁ hiraṇyaṁ paśavaḥ striyaḥ nūnaṁ naikasya paryāptamiti matvā śamaṁ vrajet

Whatever rice, barley, gold, cattle, and women exist on this earth are surely not enough even for a single person — thinking thus, one should attain peace.'

Verse 241 (padma.1.19.241)

vasiṣṭha uvāca tapasāṁ saṁcayo yasya dravyāṇāṁ yasya saṁcayaḥ tapaḥsaṁcaya eveha viśiṣṭo dhanasaṁcayāt

Vasishtha said: 'Whoever accumulates austerities, and whoever accumulates possessions — the accumulation of austerity is superior here to the accumulation of wealth.

Verse 242 (padma.1.19.242)

tyajataḥ saṁcayānsarvānyāṁti nāśamupadravāḥ nahi saṁcayavānkaściddṛśyate nirupadravaḥ

For one who gives up all accumulations, calamities come to nothing; for no one who possesses accumulated wealth is ever seen free of calamity.

Verse 243 (padma.1.19.243)

yathāyathā na gṛhṇāti brāhmaṇo'satpratigraham tathā tasya hi saṁtoṣādbrāhmaṁ tejo vivarddhate

The more a Brahmin refrains from accepting improper gifts, the more, through that very contentment, his Brahminical splendor increases.

Verse 244 (padma.1.19.244)

akiṁcanatvaṁ rājyaṁ ca tulayā samatolayat akiṁcanatvamadhikaṁ rājyādapi hitātmanaḥ

Weighing possessionlessness and kingship on a scale — possessionlessness outweighs even kingship, for one of benevolent soul.'

Verse 245 (padma.1.19.245)

kaśyapa uvāca anartho brāhmaṇasyaiṣa yastvarthanicayo mahān

Kashyapa said: 'This indeed is harm to a Brahmin — the great accumulation of wealth.

Verse 246 (padma.1.19.246)

arthaiśvaryavimūḍho hi śreyaso bhraśyate dvijaḥ arthasaṁpadvimohāya vimoho narakāya ca

Deluded by wealth and power, the twice-born falls from his true good. Wealth's abundance leads to delusion, and delusion leads to hell.

Verse 247 (padma.1.19.247)

tasmādarthamanarthākhyaṁ śreyorthī dūratastyajet yasya dharmārthamarthehā tasyānīhā garīyasī

Therefore one who desires the true good should abandon from afar that wealth called 'harm.' Even for one whose pursuit of wealth is for dharma's sake, non-pursuit is greater still.

Verse 248 (padma.1.19.248)

prakṣālanāddhi paṁkasya dūrādasparśanaṁ varaṁ yorthena sādhyate dharmaḥ kṣayiṣṇuḥ sa prakīrtitaḥ

Rather than washing off mud, it is better not to touch it at all, from a distance. Dharma accomplished by means of wealth is declared to be perishable.

Verse 249 (padma.1.19.249)

yaḥ parārthe parityāgaḥ sokṣayo muktilakṣaṇaḥ bharadvāja uvāca jīryaṁti jīryataḥ keśā daṁtā jīryaṁti jīryataḥ

That renunciation which is made for the sake of others alone is imperishable, marked by liberation.' Bharadvaja said: 'As one grows old, the hair grows old; as one grows old, the teeth grow old,

Verse 250 (padma.1.19.250)

dhanāśā jīvitāśā ca jīryato'pi na jīryati cakṣuḥ śrotre ca jīryete tṛṣṇaikā nirupadravā

but the craving for wealth and the craving for life, even as one grows old, never grow old. The eyes and ears grow old, but thirst alone remains untouched.

Verse 251 (padma.1.19.251)

sūcyā sūtraṁ yathā vastre samānayati sūcakaḥ tadvatsaṁsārasūtraṁ hi tṛṣṇāsūcyopanīyate

Just as a needle draws thread through cloth, so the thread of samsara is drawn along by the needle of craving.

Verse 252 (padma.1.19.252)

yathā śṛṁgaṁ ruroḥ kāye varddhamāne ca varddhate anaṁtapārā duṣpūrā tṛṣṇā duḥkhaśatāvahā

Just as an antler grows on a deer's body as the body itself grows, so craving, endless, boundless, hard to satisfy, brings a hundred sorrows,

Verse 253 (padma.1.19.253)

and is full of unrighteousness; therefore it should be wholly forsaken.' Gautama said: 'Who, being content, cannot overcome even with mere fruits?

Verse 254 (padma.1.19.254)

lubdhaiṁdriyalaulyena saṁkaṭānyavagāhate sarvatra saṁpadastasya saṁtuṣṭaṁ yasya mānasaṁ

The greedy man, through the fickleness of his senses, plunges into difficulties. For one whose mind is content, prosperity is everywhere.

Verse 255 (padma.1.19.255)

upānadgūḍhapādasya tasya carmāvṛteva bhūḥ saṁtoṣāmṛtatṛptānāṁ yatsukhaṁ śāṁtacetasāṁ

Just as for one whose feet are covered by sandals, it is as though the whole earth were covered with leather — the happiness that belongs to those satisfied with the nectar of contentment, minds at peace,

Verse 256 (padma.1.19.256)

kutastaddhanalubdhānāmitaścetaśca dhāvatām asaṁtoṣaḥ paraṁ duḥkhaṁ saṁtoṣaḥ paramaṁ sukham

how could that ever come to those greedy for wealth, running here and there? Discontent is the greatest sorrow; contentment is the greatest happiness.

Verse 257 (padma.1.19.257)

sukhārthī puruṣastasmātsaṁtuṣṭaḥ saṁtataṁ bhavet viśvāmitra uvāca kāmaṁ kāmayamānasya yadi kāmaḥ samṛddhyati

Therefore a man who seeks happiness should always remain content.' Vishvamitra said: 'If the desire of one who desires is indeed fulfilled,

Verse 258 (padma.1.19.258)

athainamaparaḥ kāmo bhūyo vidhyati bāṇavat na jātukāmaḥ kāmānāmupabhogena śāmyati

then another desire again pierces him like an arrow. Desire is never pacified through the enjoyment of desires —

Verse 259 (padma.1.19.259)

haviṣā kṛṣṇavartmeva bhūya evābhivarddhate kāmānabhilaṣanmohānna naraḥ sukhamedhate

like fire fed with oblations, it grows all the more. A man who, out of delusion, covets sensual objects, never attains happiness.

Verse 260 (padma.1.19.260)

śyenālayatarucchāyāṁ vrajanniva kapiṁjalaḥ catussāgaraparyantāṁ yo bhuṁkte pṛthivīmimām

Like a partridge going toward the shade of the tree that is a hawk's abode, so is one who enjoys this earth stretching to the four oceans —

Verse 261 (padma.1.19.261)

tulyāśmakāñcanoyaśca sakṛtārtho na pārthivaḥ jamadagniruvāca pratigrahasamarthopi nādatte yaḥ pratigraham

the king to whom stone and gold are alike, he alone is truly fulfilled.' Jamadagni said: 'Whoever, though capable of accepting gifts, does not accept them,

Verse 262 (padma.1.19.262)

ye lokā dānaśīlānāṁ sa tānāpnoti śāśvatān yorthānicchennṛpādvipraḥ śocitavyo maharṣibhiḥ

he attains those eternal worlds belonging to the generous. The Brahmin who desires wealth from a king ought to be mourned by the great sages —

Verse 263 (padma.1.19.263)

that deluded soul does not foresee the terror of hell's torment. Even one capable of accepting gifts should not become attached to accepting them.

Verse 264 (padma.1.19.264)

pratigraheṇa viprāṇāṁ brāhmaṁ tejaḥ praśāmyati pratigrahasamarthānāṁ nivṛttānāṁ pratigrahāt

By accepting gifts, the Brahminical splendor of Brahmins is extinguished. For those capable of accepting gifts, yet who refrain from doing so,

Verse 265 (padma.1.19.265)

ya eva dadatāṁ lokāsta evāpratigṛhṇatām arundhatyuvāca bisataṁturyathānityamaṁbhasthassatataṁ viśet

the very worlds that belong to givers belong also to those who do not accept.' Arundhati said: 'Just as the lotus-fiber constantly enters the water,

Verse 266 (padma.1.19.266)

tṛṣṇā caivamanādyaṁtā tathā dehagatā sadā yā dustyajā durmatibhiryā na jīryati jīryataḥ

so too craving, beginningless and endless, always dwells within the body — hard to abandon for those of poor judgment, and which does not age even as one ages.

Verse 267 (padma.1.19.267)

yosau prāṇāṁtiko rogastāṁ tṛṣṇāṁ tyajataḥ sukhaṁ cāṁḍāla uvāca ugrādito bhayādyasmādbibhyatī me maheśvarāḥ

That craving is a fatal disease — happiness belongs only to one who abandons it.' The Chandala said: 'From that fierce fear before which even the great gods tremble,

Verse 268 (padma.1.19.268)

balīyaso durbalavattasmāccaiva bibhemyaham paśusakha uvāca yadācaraṁti vidvāṁsaḥ sadā dharmaparāyaṇāḥ

from that same fear, like a weak man before the mighty, I too tremble.' Pashusakha, the animal's companion, said: 'Whatever the wise, ever devoted to dharma, practice,

Verse 269 (padma.1.19.269)

tadeva viduṣā kāryamātmano hitamicchatā ityuktvā hemagarbhāṇi tyaktvā tāni phalāni vai

that alone should also be done by the wise man who desires his own good.' Having said this, abandoning those gold-filled fruits,

Verse 270 (padma.1.19.270)

ṛṣayo jagmuranyatra sarva eva dṛḍhavratāḥ tataste vicaraṁto vai madhyamaṁ puṣkaraṁ gatāḥ

all the sages of firm vows went elsewhere. Then, wandering on, they arrived at the middle Pushkara,

Verse 271 (padma.1.19.271)

dadṛśuḥ sahasā prāptaṁ parivrājaṁ śunaḥsakhaṁ teneha sahitāstatra gatvā kiṁcidvanāṁtaraṁ

where they suddenly saw a wandering ascetic, accompanied by a dog. Together with him, having gone into some inner part of the forest,

Verse 272 (padma.1.19.272)

saraḥ paramapaśyaṁta vṛtaṁ padmairjalāśayam niviṣṭāḥ sarasastīre ciṁtayaṁto gatiṁ śubhām

they saw a supreme lake, surrounded by lotuses. Seated on the bank of that lake, contemplating the auspicious path,

Verse 273 (padma.1.19.273)

śunaḥsakho munīnsarvānuvāca kṣudhitāṁstadā sarve vadaṁtu sahitāḥ kīdṛśī kṣutpravedanā

the dog's companion then said to all the sages, who were hungry: 'All of you, together, tell me — what is the pain of hunger like?'

Verse 274 (padma.1.19.274)

tamūcuḥ sahitāste tu parivrājaṁ śunaḥsakhaṁ ṛṣaya ūcuḥ śaktikhaḍgagadābhiśca cakratomarasāyakaiḥ

They together said to that wandering ascetic, the dog's companion — the sages said: 'The pain caused by spear, sword, mace, discus, javelin, and arrow,

Verse 275 (padma.1.19.275)

bādhite vedanā yā tu kṣudhayā sāpi nirjitā śvāsakuṣṭhakṣayāṣṭhīlī jvarāpasmāra śūlakaiḥ

even that pain is overcome by hunger. By asthma, leprosy, consumption, kidney-stones, fever, epilepsy, and colic —

Verse 276 (padma.1.19.276)

vyādhibhirjanitā sāpi kṣudhāyā nādhikā bhavet hiraṇyāṁgadakeyūramakuṭojjvalakuṁḍalāḥ

Even that pain born of diseases would not exceed hunger. Those brilliant with golden armlets, bracelets, crowns, and gleaming earrings,

Verse 277 (padma.1.19.277)

kṣudhāyāṁ na virājaṁte tatra ye saṁsthitā narāḥ yathā bhūmigataṁ toyaṁ raviraśmirvikarṣati

those men, when overtaken by hunger, no longer shine. Just as the sun's rays draw up water lying within the earth,

Verse 278 (padma.1.19.278)

tadvaccharīrajā nāḍyaḥ śoṣyaṁte jaṭharāgninā na śṛṇoti na cāghrāti cakṣuṣā naiva paśyati

so too the body's veins are dried up by the fire of the stomach. He neither hears, nor smells, nor even sees with his eyes.

Verse 279 (padma.1.19.279)

dahyate kṣīyate mūḍhaḥ śuṣyate kṣudhayārditaḥ na pūrvāṁ dakṣiṇāṁ cāpi paścimāṁ nottarāmapi

The one deluded and tormented by hunger burns, wastes away, and withers. He knows neither the east nor the south,

Verse 280 (padma.1.19.280)

na cādho naiva corddhvaṁ ca kṣudhāviṣṭo hi viṁdati mūkatvaṁ badhiratvaṁ ca jaḍatvamatha paṁgutā

nor west, nor north, nor below, nor above — one overtaken by hunger perceives nothing at all. Muteness, deafness, dullness, and lameness,

Verse 281 (padma.1.19.281)

bhairavatvamamaryādaṁ kṣudhāyāṁ saṁpravarddhate janakaṁ jananīṁ putrānbhāryāṁ duhitaraṁ tathā

and unbounded terribleness — all of these increase in hunger. Father, mother, sons, wife, and daughter too,

Verse 282 (padma.1.19.282)

bhrātaraṁ svajanaṁ vāpi tyajati kṣudhayārditaḥ na pitṝnpūjayetsamyakdevaṁ cāpi guruṁ tathā

and brother, or one's own kin too, the man tormented by hunger abandons. He honors neither the ancestors properly, nor a god, nor his guru,

Verse 283 (padma.1.19.283)

ṛṣīnupagatāṁścāpi kṣudhāviṣṭo na viṁdati evamannavihīnasya bhavaṁtyetāni dehināṁ

and one overtaken by hunger does not even recognize sages who have come near. Thus, for creatures deprived of food, all these afflictions arise.

Verse 284 (padma.1.19.284)

tadevaṁ saṁprayaccheta annaṁ śraddhāsamanvitaḥ brahmabhūtastataḥ sotha brahmaṇā saha modate

Therefore one should give food with faith. Having thus become one with Brahman, he then rejoices together with Brahman.

Verse 285 (padma.1.19.285)

susaṁskṛtaṁ ca yopyannaṁ dadyādaharahardvije yaḥ paṭhedannadānaṁ tu śrāddhe caiva viśeṣataḥ

And whoever gives well-prepared food to a twice-born, day after day, whoever recites the merit of the gift of food, especially in a shraddha,

Verse 286 (padma.1.19.286)

ekāgramānaso bhūtvā amāvasyeṁdusaṁkṣaye bhūtopaghātasaṁpūrṇe śrāddhe śrāvayate sadā

with a focused mind, on the new moon day, in a shraddha filled with the satisfaction of beings, always causes this to be recited —

Verse 287 (padma.1.19.287)

pitarastasya tuṣyaṁti yāvajjīvaṁ na saṁśayaḥ devadvijasamīpasthonnasyadātā vimucyate

his ancestors remain satisfied for as long as he lives, without doubt. One who stands near a god or a Brahmin and gives food is liberated —

Verse 288 (padma.1.19.288)

prabuddho vā pramatto vā prasaṁgādāgatopi vā bhaktyā virahito vāpi śṛṇvanpāpādvimucyate

whether awake or careless, whether having come merely by chance, or even devoid of devotion — merely by listening, he is freed from sin.

Verse 289 (padma.1.19.289)

dānena saṁyutā viprāḥ sukhino dharmabhāginaḥ yamo damo vai niyamaḥ proktastatvārthadarśibhiḥ

Brahmins endowed with generosity are happy and share in dharma. Restraint, self-control, and discipline — these have been declared by the sages who perceive the truth,

Verse 290 (padma.1.19.290)

brāhmaṇānāṁ viśeṣeṇa damo dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ damastejo varddhayati pavitro dama uttamaḥ

and especially for Brahmins, self-control alone is the eternal dharma. Self-control increases splendor; self-control is pure and supreme.

Verse 291 (padma.1.19.291)

vipāpmā caiva tejasvī puruṣo damato bhavet ye kecinniyamā loke ye ca dharmāśśubhānvayāḥ

Through self-control, a man becomes free of sin and radiant. Whatever restraints exist in the world, and whatever dharmas of auspicious lineage there are,

Verse 292 (padma.1.19.292)

sarvayajñaphalaṁ cāpi damastebhyo viśiṣyate tapo yajñastathā dānaṁ damādeva pravartate

and the fruit of all sacrifices too — self-control surpasses all of these. Austerity, sacrifice, and giving all proceed from self-control alone.

Verse 293 (padma.1.19.293)

kimaraṇyetvadāṁtasya dāṁtasyāpi kimāśrame yatrayatra vaseddāṁtastadaraṇyaṁ mahāśramaḥ

What use is the forest for one who is not self-controlled? And what use is even the hermitage for one who is self-controlled? Wherever the self-controlled one dwells, that itself is the forest, the great hermitage.

Verse 294 (padma.1.19.294)

śīlavṛttasametasya nigṛhīteṁdriyasya ca ārjave vartamānasya āśramaiḥ kiṁ prayojanam

For one endowed with good conduct and virtue, whose senses are controlled, established in uprightness — what need has he of hermitages?

Verse 295 (padma.1.19.295)

vanepi doṣāḥ prabhavaṁti rāgiṇāṁ gṛhepi paṁceṁdriyanigrahastapaḥ akutsite karmaṇi yaḥ pravartate nivṛttarāgasya gṛhaṁ tapovanam

Even in the forest, faults arise for those with passion; even at home, the restraint of the five senses is austerity. Whoever engages in blameless action — for one free of attachment, the home itself is a forest of austerity.

Verse 296 (padma.1.19.296)

sukarmadharmārjitajīvitānāṁ sadā ca saṁtuṣya gṛhe ratānām jiteṁdriyāṇāmatithipriyāṇāṁ gṛhepi dharmo niyamasthitānām

For those whose livelihood is earned through good deeds and dharma, ever content and devoted to their household, of controlled senses, fond of guests, established in discipline — for them dharma exists even in the home.

Verse 297 (padma.1.19.297)

na śabdaśāstre niratasya mokṣo na varṇasaṁge niratasya caiva na bhojanācchādana tatparasya na lokavṛttagrahaṇeratasya

There is no liberation for one absorbed in grammar-science, nor for one absorbed in caste-attachment; nor for one intent on food and clothing, nor for one engrossed in worldly ways.

Verse 298 (padma.1.19.298)

ekāṁtaśīlasya dṛḍhavratasya sarvendriyaprītinivartakasya adhyātmayoge gatamānasasya mokṣo dhruvaṁ nityamahiṁsakasya

For one of solitary conduct, of firm vows, withdrawn from the pleasures of all the senses, whose mind is fixed in the yoga of the inner self, ever non-violent — liberation is certain.

Verse 299 (padma.1.19.299)

sukhaṁ ca dāṁtaḥ svapiti sukhena pratibudhyate samaḥ sarveṣu bhūteṣu mano yasya prabudhyate

The self-controlled one sleeps happily and wakes happily. He whose mind is equanimous toward all beings is the one who is truly awake.

Verse 300 (padma.1.19.300)

na rathena sukhaṁ yāti na hayena na daṁtinā yathātmanā vinītena sukhaṁ yāti mahāpathe

A man does not travel as happily by chariot, nor by horse, nor by elephant, as he travels the great path with a self that is truly disciplined.

Verse 301 (padma.1.19.301)

na tu kuryāddhariḥ spṛṣṭaḥ sarpo vāpyatiroṣitaḥ arirvā nityasaṁkruddho yathātmā damavarjitaḥ

A snake that has been touched, or an ever-furious enemy, would not do the harm that the self devoid of self-control does.

Verse 302 (padma.1.19.302)

They do not call Yama merely 'Yama'; the self itself is truly called Yama. He by whom the self has been restrained — he alone is distinguished as Yama.

Verse 303 (padma.1.19.303)

yamo yama iti prokto vṛthā tūdvijate janaḥ ātmā vai yamito yena yamastasya karoti kim

People needlessly tremble, saying 'Yama, Yama.' What can the god Yama do to him whose self has already been restrained?

Verse 304 (padma.1.19.304)

kravyādebhyaśca bhūtebhyo'dāntebhyaśca sadā bhayam teṣāṁ vipratiṣedhārthaṁ daṁḍaḥ sṛṣṭaḥ svayaṁbhuvā

There is always fear from flesh-eating creatures, and from unrestrained beings; to restrain them, the Self-Existent one created punishment.

Verse 305 (padma.1.19.305)

daṁḍo rakṣati bhūtāni daṁḍaḥ pālayate prajāḥ nivārayati pāpiṣṭhāndaṁḍo durjaya eva vā

Punishment protects beings; punishment nurtures the people; punishment restrains the sinful; punishment alone is hard to overcome.

Verse 306 (padma.1.19.306)

śyāmo yuvā lohitākṣaḥ sarvabhūtabhayāvahaḥ daṁḍaḥ śāstā manuṣyāṇāṁ yasmindharmaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ

Dark-hued, youthful, red-eyed, the terror of all beings — punishment is the ruler of men, in whom dharma is established.

Verse 307 (padma.1.19.307)

athāśrameṣu sarveṣu dama evottamaṁ vratam tāni liṁgāni vakṣyāmi yairdāṁta iti kīrtyate

Now, among all the stages of life, self-restraint alone is the supreme vow. I shall tell you the marks by which one is called 'self-controlled.'

Verse 308 (padma.1.19.308)

akārpaṇyamapāruṣyaṁ saṁtoṣaḥ suvidhānatā anasūyā guroḥ pūjā dayā bhūteṣvapaiśunam

Freedom from meanness, freedom from harshness, contentment, proper conduct, freedom from envy, honoring the guru, compassion toward beings, and freedom from malice —

Verse 309 (padma.1.19.309)

ṣaḍbhireṣa damaḥ prokta ṛṣibhiḥ śāṁtabuddhibhiḥ dayādhīnau dharmamokṣau tathā svargaśca pārthiva

by these six, self-restraint has been declared by sages of tranquil intellect. Dharma and liberation depend upon compassion, and heaven too, O king.

Verse 310 (padma.1.19.310)

One should not be angered by insult, nor delighted by honor; the wise one, equanimous in sorrow and joy, is called 'tranquil.'

Verse 311 (padma.1.19.311)

śete sukhaṁ hi śāṁtastu sukhaṁ hi pratibudhyate śreyastaramatastiṣṭhedavamantā vinaśyati

The tranquil one alone sleeps happily and wakes happily. Therefore one should remain in the better state; the one who insults perishes himself.

Verse 312 (padma.1.19.312)

apamānitastu na dhyāyettasya pāpaṁ kadācana svadharmamapi cāvekṣya paradharmaṁ na dūṣayet

Even when insulted, one should never wish sin upon that person. Even while observing one's own dharma, one should not condemn the dharma of another.

Verse 313 (padma.1.19.313)

ātmānamapi jānīyātparaṁ doṣaistu nākṣipet maṁtrairhīnaṁ kriyābhirvā janmanāpyathavā punaḥ

One should know oneself as well, and not accuse another of faults — whether deficient in mantras, in rites, or even in birth.

Verse 314 (padma.1.19.314)

damaśchādayate sarvaṁ hīnamaṁgaṁ paṭo yathā adhīyate nirarthante nābhijānaṁti ye damam

Self-restraint covers over every deficiency, just as a garment covers a limb's flaw. Those who study to no purpose do not truly understand self-restraint.

Verse 315 (padma.1.19.315)

śrutasya hi damo mūlaṁ damo dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ yo hyātmanastulayate suvarṇaṁ tulayā damam

Self-restraint is indeed the root of learning; self-restraint is the eternal dharma. He who weighs his own self-restraint on a scale, like gold,

Verse 316 (padma.1.19.316)

he is known through it as steadfast, and is not deluded by wealth. Of all vows too, self-restraint alone is the highest.

Verse 317 (padma.1.19.317)

yadyadhīte ṣaḍaṁgāni vedatattvārthaviddvijaḥ damena tu vihīnaśca pūjyatvaṁ neha gacchati

Even if a twice-born studies the six auxiliary sciences and knows the true meaning of the Vedas, yet if devoid of self-restraint, he does not attain reverence here.

Verse 318 (padma.1.19.318)

damenahīnaṁ na punaṁti vedā yadyapyadhītāḥ saha ṣaḍbhiraṁgaiḥ sāṁkhyaṁ ca yogaśca kulaṁ ca janma tīrthābhiṣekaśca nirarthakāni

Even the Vedas studied together with the six auxiliary sciences do not purify one devoid of self-restraint. Sankhya, Yoga, lineage, birth, and pilgrimage-bathing all become meaningless.

Verse 319 (padma.1.19.319)

amṛtasyeva tṛpyeta apamānasya yogavit viṣavacca jugupseta saṁmānasya sadā dvijaḥ

The knower of yoga should regard insult as satisfying, like nectar, and should always be disgusted by honor, like poison, O twice-born.

Verse 320 (padma.1.19.320)

apamānāttapovṛddhiḥ saṁmānācca tapaḥkṣayaḥ arcitaḥ pūjito vipro dugdhā gauriva gacchati

From insult, austerity increases; from honor, austerity diminishes. A Brahmin who is honored and worshipped declines like a milked cow —

Verse 321 (padma.1.19.321)

punarāpyāyate dhenuḥ satṛṇaiḥ salilairyathā evaṁ japaiśca homaiśca punarāpyāyate dvijaḥ

just as a cow is replenished again with grass and water, so too the twice-born is replenished again through recitation and fire-offering.

Verse 322 (padma.1.19.322)

ākrośakasamo loke suhṛdanyo na vidyate yastu duṣkṛtamādāya sukṛtaṁ svaṁ prayacchati

There is no friend in the world equal to one who reviles you — who takes away your bad deeds and gives you his own good deeds in return.

Verse 323 (padma.1.19.323)

ākrośamānānnākrośenmanyuṁ svaṁ vinivartayet sanniyamya tadātmānamamṛtenābhiṣiṁcati

One should not revile those who revile; one should restrain one's own anger. Thus, having composed himself, he anoints his very self with nectar, as it were.

Verse 324 (padma.1.19.324)

kapālaṁ vṛkṣamūlāni kucelamasahāyatā anapekṣā brahmacaryaṁ nayanti paramāṁ gatim

The begging-bowl, the roots of trees, worn-out clothing, having no companions, freedom from expectation, and celibacy — these lead to the supreme goal.

Verse 325 (padma.1.19.325)

kāmakrodhau vinirjitya kimaraṇye kariṣyati abhyāsena tu vai śāstraṁ kulaṁ śīlena dhāryate

Having conquered desire and anger, what more will one accomplish in the forest? Scripture is mastered through practice, and a family is sustained through good conduct.

Verse 326 (padma.1.19.326)

guṇairmantrā vidhāryante krodhassattvena dhāryate yastu krodhaṁ samutpannaṁ saṁdhārayati cātmanaḥ

Mantras are sustained by their virtues; anger is restrained by fortitude. Whoever holds back the anger that has arisen within himself,

Verse 327 (padma.1.19.327)

akrodhena jayedvīraḥ kastena sadṛśo bhuvi yastu krodhaṁ samutpannaṁ saṁtaṁ saṁyamya tiṣṭhati

the hero conquers through freedom from anger — who on this earth is his equal? Whoever, having restrained the anger that has arisen, remains composed,

Verse 328 (padma.1.19.328)

taṁ satsāratamammanye nāsminsīdati yaḥ pumān eṣa paitāmaho guhyo brahmarāśissanātanaḥ

him I consider the very essence of the good; such a man never sinks. This is the Grandsire's secret teaching, the eternal treasury of Brahman,

Verse 329 (padma.1.19.329)

dharmasya niyamo yo hi mayā te kathito bhṛśam anye ca yajvanāṁ lokā anye cāpi tapasvināṁ

this is the discipline of dharma, which I have thoroughly related to you. There are other worlds for sacrificers, and other worlds too for ascetics,

Verse 330 (padma.1.19.330)

anye damavatāṁ lokāste vai paramapūjitāḥ ekaḥ kṣamāvatāṁ doṣo dvitīyo nopapadyate

and there are other worlds for the self-controlled — they are most highly honored. There is one fault in the forgiving, and no second is possible —

Verse 331 (padma.1.19.331)

yadidaṁ kṣamayā yuktamaśaktammanyate janaḥ na caiṣa doṣo maṁtavyaḥ kṣamā prajñāvatāṁ balam

that people consider one endowed with forgiveness to be incapable. But this should not be reckoned a fault — forgiveness is the strength of the wise.

Verse 332 (padma.1.19.332)

praśamaṁ yobhijānāti iṣṭāpūrtaṁ mahīyate yatkrodhayukto japati juhoti ca yadarcati

Whoever understands tranquility is exalted through acts of piety and public benefit. Whatever a man, filled with anger, recites, offers in fire, or worships,

Verse 333 (padma.1.19.333)

sarvaṁ kṣarati tattasya bhinnakuṁbhādivodakam damādhyāyamimaṁ puṇyaṁ prātarutthāya yaḥ paṭhet

all of it drains away from him, like water from a cracked pot. Whoever rises at dawn and reads this holy chapter on self-restraint,

Verse 334 (padma.1.19.334)

sa dharmanāvamāruhya durgāṇyati tariṣyati damādhyāyamimaṁ puṇyaṁ satataṁ śrāvayedidvajaḥ

he, boarding the boat of dharma, shall cross over difficulties. Whoever, a twice-born, constantly makes this holy chapter on self-restraint be heard,

Verse 335 (padma.1.19.335)

sa brahmalokamāpnoti tasmānna cyavate punaḥ śrūyatāṁ dharmasarvasvaṁ śrutvā caitatpradhāryatām

he attains Brahmaloka, and does not fall from it again. Now hear the very essence of dharma, and having heard it, hold it firmly —

Verse 336 (padma.1.19.336)

ātmanaḥ pratikūlāni pareṣāṁ na samācaret mātṛvatparadārāṁśca paradravyāṇi loṣṭhavat

One should not do to others what is disagreeable to oneself. Regard others' wives as one's mother, and others' wealth as a mere clod of earth.

Verse 337 (padma.1.19.337)

ātmavatsarvabhūtāni yaḥ paśyati sa paśyati pacanaṁ vaiśvadevārthe parārthe yacca jīvitam

Whoever sees all beings as equal to himself, he alone truly sees. Cooking for the sake of the Vaishvadeva offering, and living for the sake of others —

Verse 338 (padma.1.19.338)

etadbhavecca sarvasvaṁ dhātūnāmiva kāṁcanam sarvabhūtahitaṁ rājannadhītyāmṛtamaśnute

this is one's true wealth, just as gold is the essence of ores. O king, whoever is devoted to the good of all beings, having learned this, partakes of immortality.

Verse 339 (padma.1.19.339)

evaṁ vai dharmasarvasvamuktvā te tu śunaḥsakham tenaiva sahitāḥ sarve niviṣṭāssarasastaṭe

Having thus spoken this essence of dharma to the dog's companion, all of them, together with him, settled on the bank of that lake.

Verse 340 (padma.1.19.340)

saropaśyansuvistīrṇaṁ padmotpalajalāvṛtam tatrāvatāraṁ kṛtvā te bisāni ca kalāpaśaḥ

Seeing that lake, vast, covered with lotuses and blue water-lilies, having descended into it, they gathered lotus-fibers in bundles,

Verse 341 (padma.1.19.341)

tīre nikṣipya sarasaścakruḥ puṇyāṁ jalakriyām athottīrya jalāttasmātte sametya parasparam

and, having set them upon the bank of the lake, they performed their holy water-rites. Then, having come up out of the water, gathering together,

Verse 342 (padma.1.19.342)

bisānyetānyapaśyaṁta idaṁ vacanamabruvan ṛṣaya ūcuḥ kena kṣudhābhitaptānāmasmākaṁ pāpakarmaṇām

and, not finding those lotus-fibers, they spoke this word — the sages said: 'These lotus-fibers of ours, we who are afflicted by hunger and burdened with sin,

Verse 343 (padma.1.19.343)

nṛśaṁsenāpanītāni bisānyāhārakāṁkṣiṇā te śaṁkamānāstvanyonyaṁ paryapṛcchandvijottamāḥ

who cruel, food-craving person has taken away?' Suspecting one another, those finest twice-born questioned each other,

Verse 344 (padma.1.19.344)

cakruśca niścayaṁ sarve śapathaṁ prati pārthiva kaśyapa uvāca sarvatra sarvaṁ haratu nyāsalopaṁ karotu ca

and, O king, all of them together resolved upon this as an oath. Kashyap said: 'Let him steal everything everywhere, and betray every trust,

Verse 345 (padma.1.19.345)

kūṭasākṣitvamabhyetu bisastainyaṁ karoti yaḥ daṁbhena dharmaṁ caratu rājānaṁ copasevatām

let him bear false witness — whoever has stolen the lotus-fibers. Let him practice dharma with hypocrisy, and let him serve a king,
