Srishti Khanda · Chapter 20
The Rule of Ritual Bathing
Verse 1 (padma.1.20.1)
bhīṣma uvāca atyāścaryavatī ramyā katheyaṁ pāpanāśinī vistareṇa ca me brūhi yāthātathyena pṛcchataḥ
Bhishma said: 'This sin-destroying tale is most wondrous and delightful. O sage, tell it to me in detail, exactly as it happened, just as I ask.'
Verse 2 (padma.1.20.2)
māhātmyaṁ madhyamasyāpi ṛṣibhiḥ parikīrtitam phalaṁ cānnasya kathitaṁ māhātmyaṁ ca damasya tu
The greatness of the middle Pushkara too has been described by the sages, and the fruit of food-giving, and the greatness of self-restraint, has also been told.
Verse 3 (padma.1.20.3)
viṣṇunā ca padanyāsaḥ kṛto yatra mahāmune kanīyasastathotpattiryathābhūtā vadasva me
O great sage, tell me where Vishnu set his footprint, and how the smallest Pushkara came into being, exactly as it happened.
Verse 4 (padma.1.20.4)
pulastya uvāca purā rathaṁtare kalpe rājāsītpuṣpavāhanaḥ nāmnā lokeṣu vikhyātastejasā sūryasannibhaḥ
Pulastya said: 'Long ago, in the Rathantara Kalpa, there was a king named Pushpavahana, renowned by that very name throughout the worlds, radiant in splendor like the sun.
Verse 5 (padma.1.20.5)
tapasā tasya tuṣṭena caturvaktreṇa bhārata kamalaṁ kāṁcanaṁ dattaṁ yathākāmagamaṁ nṛpa
O descendant of Bharata, pleased by his austerity, the four-faced Brahma gave him a golden lotus, which could travel anywhere at will, O king.
Verse 6 (padma.1.20.6)
saptadvīpāni lokaṁ ca yatheṣṭaṁ vicaratsadā kalpādau tu samaṁ dvīpaṁ tasya puṣkaravāsinā
Roaming always at will over the seven continents and the whole world, at the beginning of the kalpa, by the people dwelling on that lotus,
Verse 7 (padma.1.20.7)
lokena pūjitaṁ tasmātpuṣkaradvīpamucyate tadeva brahmaṇā dattaṁ yānamasya tatoṁbujam
his continent was honored, and therefore it is called Pushkaradvipa. That very vehicle, the lotus, was given to him by Brahma —
Verse 8 (padma.1.20.8)
puṣpavāhana ityāhustasmāttaṁ devadānavāḥ naupamyamastīha jagattrayepi brahmāṁbujasthasya ca tasya rājñaḥ
and therefore the gods and Danavas called him 'Pushpavahana.' There is no equal in these three worlds to that king seated upon Brahma's lotus.
Verse 9 (padma.1.20.9)
taponubhāvādatha tasya rājñī nārī sahasrairabhivaṁdyamānā nāmnā ca lāvaṇyavatī babhūva yā pārvatīveṣṭatamā bhavasya
Then, through the power of his austerity, his queen, honored by thousands, became, named Lavanyavati, most devoted, like Parvati to Bhava.
Verse 10 (padma.1.20.10)
tasyātmajānāmayutaṁ babhūva dharmātmanāmagryadhanurdharāṇām tadātmajāṁstānabhivīkṣya rājā muhurmuhurvismayamāsasāda
Ten thousand sons were born to him, righteous-souled and finest archers. Beholding those sons, the king was struck with wonder again and again.
Verse 11 (padma.1.20.11)
sobhyāgataṁ pūjya munipravīraṁ pracetasaṁ vākyamidaṁ babhāṣe kasmādvibhūtiracalāmaramartyapūjā jātā kathaṁ kamalajā sadṛśī surājñī
He said this word to the venerable, foremost sage Prachetas who had come to him: 'How did this unshakeable prosperity, honored by both gods and men, come about? And how did I obtain this queen, equal to the lotus-born goddess herself?
Verse 12 (padma.1.20.12)
bhāryā mayālpatapasā paritoṣitena dattaṁ mamāṁbujagṛhaṁ ca munīṁdra dhātrā yasminpraviṣṭamapi koṭiśataṁ nṛpāṇāṁ sāmātyakuṁjararathaughajanāvṛtānāṁ
Satisfied by little austerity, I was given this wife, and this lotus-mansion too, O lord of sages, was given by the Creator — into which, even if a hundred crore kings, together with ministers, elephants, chariot-throngs, and retinues, were to enter,
Verse 13 (padma.1.20.13)
nālakṣyate kvagatamambaragāmibhiśca tārāgaṇeṁduraviraśmibhirapyagamyam tasmātkimanyajananījaṭharodbhavena dharmādikaṁ kṛtamaśeṣajanātigaṁ yat
it would not be perceived where they had gone — it is inaccessible even to the sky-traveling stars, the moon, and the sun's rays. Therefore, what dharma and the like has been performed by one such as me, born from an ordinary mother's womb, that surpasses all other people,
Verse 14 (padma.1.20.14)
sarvairmayātha tanayairatha vānayāpi sadbhāryayā tadakhilaṁ kathaya pracetaḥ sopyabhyadhādatha bhavāṁtaritaṁ nirīkṣya pṛthvīpate śṛṇu tadadbhutahetuvṛttam
by me, by all my sons, and by this virtuous wife of mine as well — tell me all of that, O Prachetas.' He then, having beheld a former existence, said: 'O lord of the earth, listen to that account of the wondrous cause.
Verse 15 (padma.1.20.15)
janmābhavattava tu lubdhakulepi ghoraṁ jātastvamapyanudinaṁ kila pāpakārī vapurapyabhūttava punaḥ puruṣāṁgasaṁdhidurgaṁdhisattvakunakhābharaṇaṁ samaṁtāt
Your birth occurred in a hunter's family, a terrible one, and you too were, day after day, a doer of sinful deeds. Your body too was foul-smelling, marked with wicked nails, its joints repugnant on every side,
Verse 16 (padma.1.20.16)
and you had no friend, no son or kinsman, no such sister, no mother — you were as if cursed then. Now, most highly honored, facing what is supremely desired, this earth has become, as it were, a beautiful hundred-year-old woman.
Verse 17 (padma.1.20.17)
abhūdanāvṛṣṭiratīva raudrā kadācanāhāranimittamasyāṁ kṣutpīḍitena bhavatā tu yadā na kiṁcidāsāditaṁ vanyaphalādi bhakṣyaṁ
At that time, on account of food, an exceedingly terrible drought occurred. When you, afflicted by hunger, could find no forest fruits or anything else to eat,
Verse 18 (padma.1.20.18)
athābhidṛṣṭaṁ mahadaṁbujāḍhyaṁ sarovaraṁ paṁkaparītarodhaḥ padmānyathādāya tato bahūni gataḥ puraṁ vaidiśa nāmadheyaṁ
then you saw a great lake, rich with lotuses, its shore surrounded by mud. Taking many lotuses from there, you went to a city named Vaidisha.
Verse 19 (padma.1.20.19)
tanmūlyalābhāya puraṁ samastaṁ bhrāṁtaṁ tvayāśeṣamahastadāsīt kretā na kaścitkamaleṣu jātaḥ klāṁtaḥ paraṁ kṣutparipīḍitaśca
To obtain their price, you wandered through the whole city all day long. No buyer for the lotuses was found, and you became utterly exhausted and tormented by hunger.
Verse 20 (padma.1.20.20)
upaviṣṭastvamekasminsabhāryo bhavanāṁgaṇe tato rātrau bhavāṁstatra aśrauṣīnmaṁgaladhvaniṁ
You sat down alone in the courtyard of a house, together with your wife. Then, at night, you heard an auspicious sound there.
Verse 21 (padma.1.20.21)
sabhāryastatra gatavānyatrāsau maṁgaladhvaniḥ tatra maṁḍalamadhyasthā viṣṇorarcāvilokitā
You went there, together with your wife, to where that auspicious sound was. There, in the middle of a ritual circle, Vishnu's image was seen,
Verse 22 (padma.1.20.22)
veśyānaṁgavatī nāma bibhratī dvādaśīvrataṁ samāpya māghamāsasya dvādaśyāṁ lavaṇācalaṁ
worshipped by a courtesan named Anangavati, who was observing the Dvadashi vow. Having completed the vow on the twelfth day of Magha, at Lavanachala,
Verse 23 (padma.1.20.23)
nyavedayattu gurave śayyāṁ copaskarānvitām alaṁkṛtya hṛṣīkeśaṁ sauvarṇaṁ samamādarāt
she offered to her guru a bed with all its furnishings, and, adorning Hrishikesha with gold, with reverence,
Verse 24 (padma.1.20.24)
sā tu dṛṣṭā tatastābhyāmidaṁ ca pariciṁtitaṁ kimebhiḥ kamalaiḥ kāryaṁ varaṁ viṣṇuralaṁkṛtaḥ
she was seen by you both, and you both thought — 'What need is there for these lotuses? Vishnu is already well adorned.'
Verse 25 (padma.1.20.25)
iti bhaktistadā jātā daṁpatyostu nareśvara tatprasaṁgātsamabhyarcya keśavaṁ lavaṇācalaṁ
O lord of men, thus devotion arose then in that couple. On that very occasion, having worshipped Keshava at Lavanachala —
Verse 26 (padma.1.20.26)
śayyā ca puṣpaprakaraiḥ pūjitābhūcca sarvaśaḥ athānaṁgavatī tuṣṭā tayordhānyaśatatrayam
That bed was worshipped everywhere with heaps of flowers. Then Anangavati, pleased, ordered three hundred measures of grain
Verse 27 (padma.1.20.27)
dīyatāmādideśātha kaladhautapalatrayaṁ na gṛhītaṁ tatastābhyāṁ mahāsatvāvalaṁbanāt
to be given to them, then three palas of silver too. But those two, holding firm to their great fortitude, did not accept it.
Verse 28 (padma.1.20.28)
anaṁgavatyā ca punastayorannaṁ caturvidhaṁ ānīya vyāhṛtaṁ cānnaṁ bhujyatāmiti bhūpate
Then Anangavati again brought and offered four kinds of food for the two of them, saying, 'Eat this,' O king.
Verse 29 (padma.1.20.29)
tābhyāṁ ca tadapi tyaktaṁ bhokṣyāvaḥ śvo varānane prasaṁgādupavāso nau tavādyāstu śubhāvahaḥ
They gave up even that: 'We shall eat tomorrow, O fair-faced one; today, on this occasion, let our fast bring you good fortune.
Verse 30 (padma.1.20.30)
janmaprabhṛti pāpiṣṭhāvāvāṁ devi dṛḍhavrate tvatprasaṁgādbhavadgehe dharmaleśostu nāviha
From birth onward, we two have been most sinful, O firm-vowed goddess. Through this occasion of yours, in your house, let there be some fragment of dharma for us too.'
Verse 31 (padma.1.20.31)
iti jāgaraṇaṁ tābhyāṁ tatprasaṁgādanuṣṭhitaṁ prabhāte ca tayā dattā śayyā salavaṇācalā
Thus the two of them kept a night-vigil on that very occasion. And at dawn she gave that bed, together with the offerings for Lavanachala,
Verse 32 (padma.1.20.32)
grāmaśca gurave bhaktyā viprebhyo dvādaśaiva tu vastrālaṁkārasaṁyuktā gāvaśca kanakānvitāḥ
and a village, with devotion, to her guru, and to twelve Brahmins, along with clothes and ornaments, and cows adorned with gold,
Verse 33 (padma.1.20.33)
bhojanaṁ ca suhṛnmitradīnāṁdhakṛpaṇaiḥ saha tacca lubdhakadāṁpatyaṁ pūjayitvā visarjitam
and food, together with friends, companions, the poor, the blind, and the destitute. That hunter-couple too, having been honored, was then sent off.
Verse 34 (padma.1.20.34)
sa bhavānlubdhako jātaḥ sapatnīko nṛpeśvaraḥ puṣkaraprakarāttasmātkeśavasya tu pūjanāt
You yourself, O lord of men, became that hunter, together with your wife. From that heap of lotuses, and from that worship of Keshava,
Verse 35 (padma.1.20.35)
vinaṣṭāśeṣapāpasya tava puṣkaramaṁdiraṁ tasya satyasya māhātmyādalobhatapasā nṛpa
all your sins were destroyed; that is the origin of your Pushkara mansion. O king, through the greatness of that truth and that greed-free austerity,
Verse 36 (padma.1.20.36)
prādātkāmagamaṁ yānaṁ lokanāthaścaturmukhaḥ saṁtuṣṭastava rājeṁdra puṣkaraṁ tvaṁ samāśraya
the lord of the worlds, the four-faced one, pleased, gave you that vehicle capable of traveling at will. O Indra among kings, take refuge in Pushkara,
Verse 37 (padma.1.20.37)
kalpaṁ satvaṁ samāsādya vibhūtidvādaśīvrataṁ kuru rājeṁdra nirvāṇamavaśyaṁ samavāpsyasi
having attained a kalpa's worth of merit, perform the Vibhuti-Dvadashi vow, O Indra among kings; you shall surely attain liberation.'
Verse 38 (padma.1.20.38)
etaduktvā tu sa munistatraivāṁtaradhīyata rājā yathoktaṁ ca punarakarotpuṣpavāhanaḥ
Having said this, that sage vanished right there. And King Pushpavahana again did as he had been told.
Verse 39 (padma.1.20.39)
idamācarato rājannakhaṁḍavratatā bhavet yathākathaṁcitkālena dvādaśadvādaśīrnṛpa
O king, for one who observes this, the unbroken continuity of the vow is maintained. However it may be, over time, twelve Dvadashis, O king,
Verse 40 (padma.1.20.40)
kartavyā śaktito deva viprebhyo dakṣiṇā nṛpa jyeṣṭhe gāvaḥ pradātavyā madhyame bhūmiruttamā
should be performed according to one's ability, with gifts to Brahmins, O lord, O king. In the elder Dvadashi, cows should be given; in the middle one, excellent land;
Verse 41 (padma.1.20.41)
kaniṣṭhe kāṁcanaṁ deyamityeṣā dakṣiṇā smṛtā prathamaṁ brahmadaivatyaṁ dvitīyaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ tathā
in the youngest one, gold should be given — this is the gift declared. The first is dedicated to Brahma, the second likewise to Vishnu,
Verse 42 (padma.1.20.42)
tṛtīyaṁ rudradaivatyaṁ trayo devāstriṣu sthitāḥ iti kaluṣavidāraṇaṁ janānāṁ paṭhati ca yastu śṛṇoti cāpi bhaktyā
the third is dedicated to Rudra — the three gods are established in these three. Thus, whoever reads this destroyer of people's impurities, or even hears it with devotion,
Verse 43 (padma.1.20.43)
matimapi ca sa yāti devaloke vasati ca romasamāni vatsarāṇi athātaḥ saṁpravakṣyāmi vratānāmuttamaṁ vrataṁ
he also attains a refined intellect, and dwells in the world of the gods for as many years as there are hairs on the body. Now henceforth I shall relate the supreme vow among vows,
Verse 44 (padma.1.20.44)
kathitaṁ tena rudreṇa mahāpātakanāśanam naktamabdaṁ caritvā tu gavāsārdhaṁ kuṭuṁbine
declared by that same Rudra, which is the destroyer of great sins. Having kept the vow of eating only at night for a year, one should give to a householder something equal to half a cow's worth,
Verse 45 (padma.1.20.45)
haimaṁ cakraṁ triśūlaṁ ca dadyādviprāya vāsasī evaṁ yaḥ kurute puṇyaṁ śivaloke sa modate
a golden wheel and trident, and garments, to a Brahmin. Whoever performs this merit rejoices in Shiva's world.
Verse 46 (padma.1.20.46)
etadeva vrataṁ nāma mahāpātakanāśanam yasvekabhaktena kṣipeddhenuṁ vṛṣasamanvitām
This very vow is called the destroyer of great sins. Whoever, eating but once a day, offers a cow together with a bull,
Verse 47 (padma.1.20.47)
dhenuṁ tilamayīṁ dadyātsa padaṁ yāti śāṁkaram etadrudravrataṁ nāma bhayaśokavināśanam
and also gives a cow made of sesame, he attains Shankara's abode. This is known by the name Rudra-vrata, the destroyer of fear and sorrow.
Verse 48 (padma.1.20.48)
yaśca nīlotpalaṁ haimaṁ śarkarāpātrasaṁyutam ekāṁtaritanaktāśī samāṁte vṛṣasaṁyutam
And whoever offers a golden blue lotus, together with a bowl of sugar, while eating only at night on alternate days, and at the year's end offers it together with a bull,
Verse 49 (padma.1.20.49)
vaiṣṇavaṁ sa padaṁ yāti nīlavratamidaṁ smṛtam āṣāḍhādicaturmāsamabhyaṁgaṁ varjayennaraḥ
goes to Vishnu's abode — this is remembered as the Nila-vrata. A man should give up oil-massage for the four months beginning with Ashadha —
Verse 50 (padma.1.20.50)
bhojanopaskaraṁ dadyātsa yāti bhavanaṁ hareḥ janaprītikaraṁ nṝṇāṁ prītivratamihocyate
whoever gives food-utensils in charity goes to Hari's mansion. This, delighting people, is here called the Priti-vrata.
Verse 51 (padma.1.20.51)
varjayitvā madhau yastu dadhikṣīraghṛtaikṣavam dadyādvastrāṇi sūkṣmāṇi rasapātreṇa saṁyutam
Whoever, forgoing curd, milk, ghee, and sugarcane products with honey, gives fine garments together with a vessel of juice,
Verse 52 (padma.1.20.52)
saṁpūjya vipramithunaṁ gaurī me prīyatāmiti etadgaurīvrataṁ nāma bhavānīlokadāyakam
and, having worshipped a Brahmin couple, says 'may Gauri be pleased with me' — this is called the Gauri-vrata, the bestower of Bhavani's world.
Verse 53 (padma.1.20.53)
puṣyādau yastrayodaśyāṁ kṛtvā naktamatho punaḥ aśokaṁ kāṁcanaṁ dadyādikṣuyuktaṁ daśāṁgulam
Whoever, on the thirteenth day beginning with Pushya, having kept the night-fast, then again gives a golden Ashoka, ten fingers long, together with sugarcane,
Verse 54 (padma.1.20.54)
viprāya vastrasaṁyuktaṁ pradyumnaḥ prīyatāmiti kalpaṁ viṣṇupure sthitvā viśokassyātpunarnṛpa
to a Brahmin along with cloth, saying 'may Pradyumna be pleased' — having dwelt a kalpa in Vishnu's city, he becomes free from sorrow again, O king.
Verse 55 (padma.1.20.55)
etatkāmavrataṁ nāma sadā śokavināśanam āṣāḍhādi vrate yastu varjayedyaḥ phalāśanam
