Srishti Khanda · Chapter 21
Glory of Pushkara
Verse 1 (padma.1.21.1)
pulastya uvāca āsītpurā bṛhatkalpe dharmamūrtirjanādhipaḥ suhṛcchakrasya nihatā yena daityāssahasraśaḥ
Pulastya said: Long ago, in a certain great kalpa, there was a king named Dharmamurti, a friend of Indra, by whom thousands of daityas were slain.
Verse 2 (padma.1.21.2)
somasūryādayo yasya tejasā vigataprabhāḥ bhavaṁti śataśo yena dānavāśca parājitāḥ
By whose splendor the Moon, the Sun, and other bright beings lost their radiance, and by whom hundreds of danavas were defeated.
Verse 3 (padma.1.21.3)
yatheccharūpadhārī ca mānuṣopyaparājitaḥ tasya bhānumatī bhāryā satī trailokyasuṁdarī
Able to take any form at will, he remained unconquered though born a man. His wife was Bhanumati, a virtuous woman and the loveliest in the three worlds.
Verse 4 (padma.1.21.4)
lakṣmīsadṛśarūpeṇa nirjitāmarasuṁdarī rājñastasyāgramahiṣī prāṇebhyopi garīyasī
Equal to Lakshmi in beauty, surpassing even the loveliest of the immortals, she was that king's chief queen, dearer to him than his own life.
Verse 5 (padma.1.21.5)
daśanārīsahasrāṇāṁ madhye śrīriva rājate nṛpakoṭisahasreṇa na kadācitsamucyate
Amid ten thousand women she shone like Shri herself — one whose worth could never be equalled even against ten million kings.
Verse 6 (padma.1.21.6)
kadācidāsthānagataḥ papraccha svapurohitam vismayenāvṛto natvā vasiṣṭhamṛṣisattamam
One day, seated in his court and filled with wonder, he bowed to Vasishtha, foremost of sages, and asked his family priest:
Verse 7 (padma.1.21.7)
bhagavankena dharmeṇa mama lakṣmīranuttamā kasmācca vipulaṁ tejo maccharīre sadottamam
'Holy one, by what merit has this unsurpassed fortune come to me, and from what cause does this abundant, ever-excellent radiance dwell in my body?'
Verse 8 (padma.1.21.8)
vasiṣṭha uvāca purā līlāvatī nāma veśyā śivaparāyaṇā tayā dattaścaturdaśyāṁ puṣkare lavaṇācalaḥ
Vasishtha said: Long ago there was a courtesan named Lilavati, devoted to Shiva. On the fourteenth day, at Pushkara, she gave a mountain of salt,
Verse 9 (padma.1.21.9)
hemavṛkṣāmaraiḥ sārddhaṁ yathāvadvidhipūrvakaṁ śūdraḥ suvarṇakāraśca karmakṛtso'bhavattadā
together with golden trees, duly and according to rite. The one who performed that work for her was a shudra goldsmith.
Verse 10 (padma.1.21.10)
bhṛtyo līlāvatīgehe tena haimā vinirmitāḥ taravo hemapuṣpāśca śraddhāyuktena pārthiva
O king, he was a servant in Lilavati's household; with faith he fashioned golden trees and golden flowers for her.
Verse 11 (padma.1.21.11)
atirūpeṇa saṁpannā ghaṭitāste suśobhanāḥ dharmakāryamiti jñātvā na gṛhītaṁ ca vetanam
Wrought with exquisite beauty, those trees were most splendid; and knowing this to be an act of dharma, he took no wages for it.
Verse 12 (padma.1.21.12)
ujjvālitāśca te patnyā suvarṇamayapādapāḥ līlāvatīgṛhe cāpi paricaryā ca pārthiva
His wife polished those golden trees bright, and, O king, she too rendered service in Lilavati's house.
Verse 13 (padma.1.21.13)
kṛtā tābhyāmaśāṭhyena dvijaśuśrūṣaṇādikā sā ca līlāvatī veśyā kālena mahatānagha
O sinless one, both of them, without deceit, performed service to brahmins and the like. And that courtesan Lilavati, after a long time,
Verse 14 (padma.1.21.14)
sarvapāpavinirmuktā jagāma śivamaṁdiram yo'sau suvarṇakāraśca daridropyatisattvavān
freed from all sin, attained Shiva's abode. As for that goldsmith — poor, yet of noble and steadfast character —
Verse 15 (padma.1.21.15)
na mūlyamādādveśyātaḥ sa bhavāniha sāṁpratam saptadvīpapatirjātaḥ sūryāyutasamaprabhaḥ
since he took no payment from the courtesan, he is now, in this life, you yourself — born lord of the seven continents, radiant as ten thousand suns.
Verse 16 (padma.1.21.16)
yayā suvarṇakārasya taravo hemanirmitāḥ samyagujjvalitāḥ patnyā seyaṁ bhānumatī tava
And she who brightly polished the goldsmith's golden trees — that same wife — is now your Bhanumati.
Verse 17 (padma.1.21.17)
tasmānnṛlokeṣvaparājitastvamārogyasaubhāgyayutā ca lakṣmīḥ tasmāttvamapyatra vidhānapūrvaṁ dhānyācalādīnnṛpate kuruṣva
Therefore you are unconquered among men, and your fortune is joined with health and good fortune. So you too, O king, should now duly perform the gift of the grain-mountain and the rest, according to rite.
Verse 18 (padma.1.21.18)
pulastya uvāca tatheti saṁpūjya sudharmamūrtirvaco vasiṣṭhasya dadau ca sarvān dhānyācalādīnvidhināsmarārerlokaṁ gatosau surapūjyamānaḥ
Pulastya said: 'So be it,' said the king; and the virtuous Dharmamurti, honoring Vasishtha's word, duly gave all the grain-mountains and the rest; and, honored by the gods, he attained the world of Shiva, the Enemy of Kama.
Verse 19 (padma.1.21.19)
paśyedyadīmānupanīyamānānspṛśenmanuṣyairiha dīyamānān śṛṇoti bhaktyātha matiṁ dadāti vikalmaṣaḥ sopi divaṁ prayāti
One who merely sees these mountain-gifts being brought forth, or touches them as men give them, or hears of them with devotion, or urges another to give — he too, freed from sin, goes to heaven.
Verse 20 (padma.1.21.20)
duḥsvapnapraśamamupaiti paṭhyamānaiḥ śaileṁdrairbhavabhayabhedanairmanuṣyaḥ yaḥ kuryātkimu nṛpapuṁgaveha samyakśāṁtātmā sakalagirīṁdrasaṁpradānam
By merely reciting these lordly mountains, which shatter the fear of worldly existence, a man is freed from bad dreams — how much more, O bull among kings, one of tranquil soul who himself duly performs the entire gift of all these mountains!
Verse 21 (padma.1.21.21)
bhīṣma uvāca kimabhīṣṭaviyogaśokasaṁdhānalamuddhartumupoṣaṇaṁ vrataṁ vā vibhavadhruvakāribhūtalesminbhavabhīterapi sūdanaṁ ca puṁsaḥ
Bhishma said: Is there some vow or fast able to lift the grief of separation from what one loves, to secure lasting prosperity on this earth, and to destroy, for a man, even the fear of worldly existence?
Verse 22 (padma.1.21.22)
pulastya uvāca paripṛṣṭamidaṁ jagatpriyaṁ te vibudhānāmapi durlabhaṁ mahattvāt tava bhaktimatastathāpi vakṣye vratamiṁdrāsuramānaveṣu guhyam
Pulastya said: This question is dear to the whole world, and by its very greatness hard to obtain even for the gods. Yet since you are devoted, I shall tell you that vow which is kept secret among gods, asuras, and men.
Verse 23 (padma.1.21.23)
puṇyamāśvayuje māsi viśokadvādaśīvratam daśamyāṁ laghubhugvidvānprārabheta yamena tu
In the month of Ashvina there is the sacred vow of Vishoka-dvadashi. On the tenth day the wise man, eating lightly, should begin it with self-restraint.
Verse 24 (padma.1.21.24)
udaṅmukhaḥ prāṅmukho vā daṁtadhāvanapūrvakam ekādaśyāṁ nirāhāraḥ samyagabhyarcya keśavam
Facing north or east, having first cleaned his teeth, on the eleventh day he should fast, duly worshipping Keshava,
Verse 25 (padma.1.21.25)
śriyaṁ cābhyarcya vidhivadbhokṣye'haṁ cāparehani evaṁ niyamakṛtsuptvā prātarutthāya mānavaḥ
and duly worship Shri as well, resolving, 'I shall eat on the following day.' Having thus kept the observance and slept, the man should rise in the morning.
Verse 26 (padma.1.21.26)
snānaṁ sarvauṣadhaiḥ kuryātpaṁcagavyajalena tu śubhramālyāṁbaradharaḥpūjayecchrīśamutpalaiḥ
He should bathe with all healing herbs and with panchagavya-water; then, wearing white garlands and garments, he should worship the Lord of Shri with blue lotuses.
Verse 27 (padma.1.21.27)
viśokāya namaḥ pādau jaṁghe ca varadāya vai śrīśāya jānunī tadvadūrū ca jalaśāyine
'Salutation to Vishoka' at the feet, 'to Varada' at the shins, 'to Shrisha' likewise at the knees, and 'to Jalashayin' at the thighs.
Verse 28 (padma.1.21.28)
kaṁdarpāya namo guhyaṁ mādhavāya namaḥ kaṭiṁ dāmodarāyetyudaraṁ pārśve ca vipulāyavai
'Salutation to Kandarpa' at the private parts, 'to Madhava' at the hips, 'to Damodara' at the belly, and 'to Vipula' at the two sides.
Verse 29 (padma.1.21.29)
nābhiṁ ca padmanābhāya hṛdayaṁ manmathāya vai śrīdharāya vibhorvakṣaḥ karau madhubhide namaḥ
The navel to Padmanabha, the heart to Manmatha, the Lord's chest to Shridhara, and 'salutation to Madhubhid' at the hands.
Verse 30 (padma.1.21.30)

The throat to Vaikuntha, the face to Padmamukha, the nose to Ashokanidhi, and the eyes to Vasudeva.
Verse 31 (padma.1.21.31)
lalāṭaṁ vāmanāyeti haraye ca punarbhruvau alakaṁ mādhavāyeti kirīṭaṁ viśvarūpiṇe
The forehead to Vamana, and again the eyebrows to Hari, the curled locks to Madhava, and the crown to the All-formed One.
Verse 32 (padma.1.21.32)
namaḥ sarvātmane tadvacchira ityabhipūjayet evaṁ saṁpūjya goviṁdaṁ dhūpamālyānulepanaiḥ
And likewise, 'salutation to the Self of all' at the head — thus should each limb be worshipped. Having thus worshipped Govinda with incense, garlands, and unguents,
Verse 33 (padma.1.21.33)
tatastu maṁḍalaṁ kṛtvā sthaṁḍilaṁ kārayenmṛdā caturaśraṁ samaṁtācca ratnimātramudakplavam
he should then draw a mandala and fashion a clay altar (sthandila) — square on every side, a cubit in size, with a slope so water drains northward.
Verse 34 (padma.1.21.34)
ślakṣṇaṁ hṛdyaṁ ca parito vapratrayasamāvṛtam triraṁgulocchritāvaprāstadvistāro dviraṁgulaḥ
It should be smooth and pleasing, bordered on every side by three raised ridges; the ridges three finger-widths high and two finger-widths broad.
Verse 35 (padma.1.21.35)
sthaṁḍilasyopariṣṭāttu bhittiraṣṭāṁgulā bhavet nadī vālukayā sūrye lakṣmyāḥ pratikṛtiṁ nyaset
Above the altar there should be a rim of eight finger-widths. With river sand, one should fashion an image of the Sun together with Lakshmi.
Verse 36 (padma.1.21.36)

On the altar, the wise man should worship Lakshmi seated in the midst of the Sun: 'Salutation to the Goddess, salutation to Shanti, salutation to Lakshmi, salutation to Shri,
Verse 37 (padma.1.21.37)

namastuṣṭyai namaḥ puṣṭyai sṛṣṭyai dṛṣṭyai namo namaḥ viśokā duḥkhanāśā yaviśokā varadāstu te
salutation to Tushti, salutation to Pushti, salutation again and again to Srishti and Drishti.' 'O sorrow-destroying Vishoka, grief's destroyer, may you the sorrowless one grant boons,
Verse 38 (padma.1.21.38)
viśokā mestu saṁpattyai viśokā sarvasiddhaye tataḥ śubhrāṁbaraiḥ sūryaṁ veṣṭya saṁpūjayetphalaiḥ
may the Sorrowless One be for my prosperity, the Sorrowless One for all success.' Then, having wrapped the Sun in white garments, he should worship it with fruits,
Verse 39 (padma.1.21.39)
bhakṣyairnānāvidhaistadvatsuvarṇakamalena ca rājatīṣu ca pātrīṣu nyaseddarbhodakaṁ budhaḥ
with various kinds of food, and likewise with a golden lotus; and the wise man should set kusha-water in silver vessels.
Verse 40 (padma.1.21.40)
tatastu nṛtyagītāni kārayetsakalāṁ niśām yāmatraye vyatīte tu tata utthāya mānavaḥ
Then he should have dance and song performed through the whole night. When the three watches have passed, the man should rise —
Verse 41 (padma.1.21.41)
abhigamya ca viprāṇāṁ mithunāni ca pūjayet śaktitastrīṇi caikaṁ vā vastramālyānulepanaiḥ
Then he should approach brahmin couples and worship them — three, or at least one, according to his means — with garments, garlands, and unguents.
Verse 42 (padma.1.21.42)
śayanasthāni pūjyāni namostu jalaśāyine tatastu gītavādyena rātryāṁ jāgaraṇe kṛte
Those placed in the ritual bed are to be worshipped, saying 'salutation to Jalashayin.' Then, after keeping night-vigil with song and music,
Verse 43 (padma.1.21.43)
prabhāte ca tataḥ snānaṁ kṛtvā dāṁpatyamarcayet bhojayecca yathāśakti vittaśāṭhyena varjitaḥ
in the morning he should bathe, worship the couple, and, free from miserliness, feed them according to his means.
Verse 44 (padma.1.21.44)
bhaktyāśrutvāpurāṇānitaddinaṁcātivāhayet anena vidhinā sarvaṁ māsimāsi samācaret
He should pass that day hearing the Puranas with devotion. By this same rite he should observe everything, month after month.
Verse 45 (padma.1.21.45)
vratāṁte śayanaṁ dadyādguḍadhenusamanvitaṁ sopadhānaṁ saviśrāmaṁ svāstarāvaraṇaṁ śubhaṁ
At the end of the vow he should give a bed — with pillow, cushioning, and an auspicious cover — together with a jaggery-cow.
Verse 46 (padma.1.21.46)
yathālakṣmīrnareśa tvāṁ na parityajya gacchati tathā surūpatārogyamaśokaṁ cāstu me sadā
'Just as Lakshmi, O lord, never departs abandoning you, so may fair form, health, and freedom from sorrow ever be mine.'
Verse 47 (padma.1.21.47)
yathā devena rahitā na lakṣmīrjāyate kvacit tathā viśokatā me'stu bhaktiragyrā ca keśave
'Just as Lakshmi is never found apart from the Lord, so may sorrowlessness be mine, and supreme devotion to Keshava.'
Verse 48 (padma.1.21.48)
maṁtreṇānena śayanaṁ guḍadhenusamanvitaṁ sūryaśca lakṣmyā sahito dātavyo bhūtimicchatā
With this mantra, the bed together with the jaggery-cow, and the Sun together with Lakshmi, should be given by one who desires prosperity.
Verse 49 (padma.1.21.49)
utpalaṁ karavīraṁ vāpyamlānaṁ caiva kuṁkumaṁ ketakaṁ siṁdhuvāraṁ ca mallikāgaṁdhapāṭalā
Blue lotus, oleander, unwithered saffron-flower, ketaki, five-leaved chaste-tree flower, jasmine, and fragrant patala —
Verse 50 (padma.1.21.50)
kadaṁbaṁ kubjakaṁ jātī śastānyetāni sarvadā bhīṣma uvāca guḍadhenuvidhānaṁ ca samācakṣva munīśvara
kadamba, kubjaka, and jati flowers — these are always recommended. Bhishma said: 'Now tell me, O lord of sages, the procedure of the jaggery-cow —
Verse 51 (padma.1.21.51)
kiṁ rūpā kena maṁtreṇa dātavyā tadihocyatāṁ pulastya uvāca guḍadhenuvidhānasya yadrūpamiha yatphalam
of what form, and with what mantra, is it to be given.' Pulastya said: 'The form of the jaggery-cow rite, and its fruit —
Verse 52 (padma.1.21.52)
tadidānīṁ pravakṣyāmi sarvapāpavināśanam kṛṣṇājinaṁ caturhastaṁ prāggrīvaṁ vinyasedbhuvi
that I shall now declare, the destroyer of all sin. One should spread a black antelope-skin, four cubits long, with its neck to the east,
Verse 53 (padma.1.21.53)
gomayenānuliptāyāṁ darbhānāstīrya sarvataḥ laghveṇakājinaṁ tadvatvatsaṁ ca parikalpayet
on ground smeared with cow-dung, having strewn kusha grass all around; and likewise fashion the calf from a small antelope-skin.
Verse 54 (padma.1.21.54)
prāṅmukhīṁ kalpayeddhenuṁ mṛdā vā gāṁ savatsakāṁ uttamā guḍadhenuḥ syātsadā bhāracatuṣṭayaṁ
One should fashion the cow, facing east, together with its calf, either from skin or clay. The best jaggery-cow should always be of four bharas' measure.
Verse 55 (padma.1.21.55)
vatsaṁ bhāreṇa kurvīta bhārābhyāṁ madhyamā smṛtā arddhabhāreṇa vatsassyātkaniṣṭhā bhārakeṇa tu
The calf should be made with one bhara; the two-bhara gift is remembered as the middling grade; with half a bhara for the calf it becomes the lowest grade, and with a small bharaka —
Verse 56 (padma.1.21.56)
caturthāṁśe navatsaḥ syādgṛhavittānusārataḥ dhenuvatsau kṛtau cobhau sitasūkṣmāṁbarāvṛtau
at a quarter-bhara there is no calf, according to one's household means. Having made both cow and calf, cover them with fine white cloth,
