Srishti Khanda · Chapter 29
The Vow of Saubhagya-Shayana
Verse 1 (padma.1.29.1)
pulastya uvāca tathaivānyatpravakṣyāmi sarvakāmaphalapradam saubhāgyaśayanaṁnāma yatpurāṇavido viduḥ
Pulastya said: Likewise I shall now declare another vow, the bestower of the fruit of all desires, called Saubhagya-Shayana, which the knowers of the Puranas know.
Verse 2 (padma.1.29.2)
purā dagdheṣu lokeṣu bhūrbhuvaḥ svarmahādiṣu saubhāgyaṁ sarvabhūtānāmekasthamabhavattadā
Of old, when the worlds — Bhuh, Bhuvah, Svah, Mahah, and the rest — were burnt up, then the good fortune of all beings came to rest in a single place.
Verse 3 (padma.1.29.3)
vaikuṁṭhaṁ sarvamāsādya viṣṇorvakṣasthale sthitam tataḥ kālena kiyatā punaḥ sargavidhau nṛpaḥ
Having entirely reached Vaikuntha, it came to rest upon the chest of Vishnu. Then, after some time, O king, at the time of creation again —
Verse 4 (padma.1.29.4)
ahaṁkāravṛtelokepra dhānapuruṣānvite spardhāyāṁ ca pravṛddhāyāṁ kamalāsanakṛṣṇayoḥ
— when the world was enveloped in ahamkara, joined with prakriti and purusha, and when a rivalry arose and grew between the Lotus-seated one and Krishna —
Verse 5 (padma.1.29.5)
piṁgākārā samudbhūtā vahnijvālātibhīṣaṇā tayābhitaptasya harervakṣasastadviniḥsṛtam
— a tawny, most terrible flame of fire arose. From the chest of Hari, scorched by that flame, it issued forth.
Verse 6 (padma.1.29.6)
yadvakṣaḥsthalamāśritya viṣṇoḥ saubhāgyamāsthitam rasarūpaṁ na tadyāvadāpnoti vasudhātale
That which, having taken refuge in Vishnu's chest, remained there as Saubhagya in liquid form, had not yet reached the surface of the earth.
Verse 7 (padma.1.29.7)
utkṣiptamaṁtarikṣāttu brahmaputreṇa dhīmatā dakṣeṇa pītamātraṁ tadrūpalāvaṇyakārakam
It was thrown up into the sky, and, the moment it was drunk by Daksha, the wise son of Brahma, it became the cause of beauty and loveliness.
Verse 8 (padma.1.29.8)
balaṁtejomahajjātaṁ dakṣasya parameṣṭhinaḥ śeṣaṁ yadapatadbhūmāvaṣṭadhā tadvyajāyata
Great strength and splendour arose in Daksha, the Lord of creatures. What remained fell to the earth, and became eightfold.
Verse 9 (padma.1.29.9)
tatastvoṣadhayo jātāḥ sapta saubhāgyadāyikāḥ ikṣavastarurājaśca niṣpavāvaśśālidhānyakam
From it were then born seven fortune-giving herbs: sugarcane, the king of trees, nishpava beans, and shali rice —
Verse 10 (padma.1.29.10)
vikāravacca gokṣīraṁ kusuṁbhaṁ kusumaṁ tathā lavaṇaṁ cāṣṭamaṁ tadvatsaubhāgyāṣṭakamucyate
— and its transformation, cow's milk, safflower and its flower, and salt as the eighth — thus is it called the Saubhagya-ashtaka, the eightfold fortune.
Verse 11 (padma.1.29.11)
pītaṁ yadbrahmaputreṇa yogajñānavidā purā duhitā sābhavattasmādyā satītyabhidhīyate
That which was drunk of old by the son of Brahma, the knower of yogic wisdom — from that was born a daughter, who is called Sati.
Verse 12 (padma.1.29.12)
lokānatītya lālityāllalitā tena cocyate trailokyasuṁdarīṁ devīmupayeme pinākadhṛt
Surpassing all the worlds in her charm, she is therefore called Lalita. The bearer of the Pinaka took as wife that goddess, most beautiful in the three worlds.
Verse 13 (padma.1.29.13)
triviśvasaubhāgyamayīṁ bhuktimuktiphalapradām tāmārādhya pumānbhaktyā nārī vā kiṁ na viṁdati
She who is composed of the fortune of the three worlds, who bestows the fruits of both enjoyment and liberation — what does a man or woman, having worshipped her with devotion, not obtain?
Verse 14 (padma.1.29.14)
bhīṣma uvāca kathamārādhanaṁ tasyā lalitāyā mune vada yadvidhānaṁ ca jagataḥ śāṁtaye tadvadasva me
Bhishma said: Tell me, O sage, how the worship of that Lalita is performed; and tell me the rite that is for the peace of the world.
Verse 15 (padma.1.29.15)
pulastya uvāca vasaṁtamāsamāsādya tṛtīyāyāṁ janapriyaḥ śuklapakṣasya pūrvāhṇe tilaiḥ snānaṁ samācaret
Pulastya said: Having reached the month of spring, on the third tithi, a person dear to the people should, in the forenoon of the bright fortnight, bathe with sesame.
Verse 16 (padma.1.29.16)
tasminnahani sā devī kila viśvātmanā satī pāṇigrahaṇikairmaṁtrairudūḍhā varavarṇinī
On that very day, that goddess Sati, of most excellent complexion, was wedded by the Universal Soul with the marriage mantras.
Verse 17 (padma.1.29.17)

Having bathed the image with the five products of the cow, and likewise with fragrant water, one should worship Gauri, joined with the Moon-crested one.

Having proclaimed 'to Harikesha', likewise 'salutation to the Bestower of boons' at the thighs; 'to Isha' at the hip, 'to Rati', and 'to Shankara' for Shankara himself.

dadyātsaubhāgyakṛdyasmātsaubhāgyāṣṭakamityuta evaṁnivedya tatsarvamagrataḥ śivayoḥ punaḥ
One should give this, since it produces fortune, and it is thus called the Saubhagya-ashtaka. Having thus offered all of it before the divine couple —
Verse 32 (padma.1.29.32)

Verse 40 (padma.1.29.40)

The Saubhagya-ashtaka is likewise to be given by one desiring prosperity. Jasmine, ashoka, lotus, kadamba, blue lotus, champaka —

evaṁ saṁvatsaraṁ yāvadupoṣya vidhivannaraḥ strī ca naktaṁ kumārī ca śivamabhyarcya bhaktitaḥ
Thus, having duly fasted for a full year — a man, a woman with a single night-meal, and a maiden likewise — having worshipped Shiva with devotion —
Verse 46 (padma.1.29.46)
vratāṁte śayanaṁ dadyātsarvopaskarasaṁyutam umāmaheśvarau haimau vṛṣabhaṁ ca gavā saha
— at the end of the vow, one should give a bed together with all its furnishings; a golden image of Uma-Maheshvara, a bull, together with a cow.
Verse 47 (padma.1.29.47)

brahmāṇaṁ saha sāvitryā pūjayitvā narastviha sarvānkāmānavāpnoti manasā samabhīpsitān
— and Brahma together with Savitri; a man, having worshipped them here, obtains all the desires wished for in the mind.
Verse 49 (padma.1.29.49)
anyānyapi yathāśakti mithunānyaṁbarādibhiḥ dhānyālaṅkāragodānairanyaiśca dhanasañcayaiḥ
He should worship other divine pairs too, according to capacity, with garments and the rest, with gifts of grain, ornaments, and cows, and with other accumulated wealth.
Verse 50 (padma.1.29.50)
vittaśāṭhyena rahitaḥ pūjayedgatavismayaḥ evaṁ karoti yaḥ samyaksaubhāgyaśayanavratam
Free of miserliness about wealth, and free of pride, one should worship. Whoever thus rightly performs this Saubhagya-Shayana vow —
Verse 51 (padma.1.29.51)
sarvānkāmānavāpnoti padaṁ vā nityamaśnute phalasyaikasya ca tyāgametatkurvansamācaret
— he obtains all desires, or attains the eternal abode. Performing this, one should also observe the renunciation of a single fruit.
Verse 52 (padma.1.29.52)
yaśaḥ kīrtimavāpnoti pratimāsaṁ narādhipa saubhāgyārogyarūpaiśca vastrālaṁkārabhūṣaṇaiḥ
He obtains fame and renown month by month, O lord of men; and, endowed with good fortune, health, and beauty, with garments and ornaments —
Verse 53 (padma.1.29.53)
na viyukto bhavedrājansaubhāgyaśayanapradaḥ yastu dvādaśavarṣāṇi saubhāgyaśayanavratam
— O king, he never becomes separated from these, for the Saubhagya-Shayana itself is their giver. And whoever, for twelve years, performs the Saubhagya-Shayana vow —
Verse 54 (padma.1.29.54)
karoti sapta cāṣṭau vā brahmaloke mahīyate pūjyamāno vasetsamyakyāvatkalpāyutaṁ naraḥ
— or for seven or eight years — is exalted in the world of Brahma. Being duly worshipped, a man dwells there for as long as ten thousand kalpas.
Verse 55 (padma.1.29.55)
viṣṇorlokamathāsādya śivalokagatastathā nārī vā kurute yā tu kumārī vā nareśvara
He then reaches the world of Vishnu, and likewise goes to the world of Shiva. And, O lord of men, a woman or a maiden who performs this —
Verse 56 (padma.1.29.56)
sāpi tatphalamāpnoti devyanugrahalālitā śṛṇuyādapi yaścaiva pradadyādathavā matim
— she too obtains that same fruit, cherished by the Goddess's grace. And whoever even merely hears this, or imparts its understanding to others —
Verse 57 (padma.1.29.57)
sopi vidyādharo bhūtvā svargaloke ciraṁ vaset idamiha madanena pūrvasṛṣṭaṁ śatadhanuṣā ca kṛtaṁ nareṇa tadvat
— he too, becoming a Vidyadhara, dwells long in the world of heaven. This was performed here of old by Madana, and likewise done by the man Shatadhanu.
Verse 58 (padma.1.29.58)
kṛtamatha pavanena naṁdinā ca kimu jananāthamahādbhutaṁ na vā syāt
It was also performed by the Wind and by Nandi — what then, O lord of men, would not become greatly wondrous by it?
