The Origin of Vishnu's Footprints (The Vamana-Trivikrama Story)

Chapter 29All chaptersChapter 31

Verse 1 (padma.1.30.1)

bhīṣma uvāca yajñapavartamāsādya viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā padāni ceha dattāni kimarthaṁ padapaddhatiḥ

Bhishma said: Having reached the Yajna-parvata, why were footsteps placed here by the all-powerful Vishnu — what is the reason for this trail of footprints?

Verse 2 (padma.1.30.2)

kṛtā vai devadevena tanme vada mahāmate katamo dānavastena viṣṇunā damitotra vai

This was made by the God of gods — tell me that, O great-minded one. Which demon was subdued here by Vishnu?

Verse 3 (padma.1.30.3)

kṛtvā vai padavinyāsaṁ tanme śaṁsa mahāmune svarloke vasatirviṣṇorvaikuṁṭhe'sya mahātmanaḥ

Tell me of that placing of footsteps, O great sage. The abode of Vishnu, that great soul, is in the world of heaven, in Vaikuntha.

Verse 4 (padma.1.30.4)

sa kathaṁ mānuṣe loke padanyāsaṁ cakāra ha devalokeṣu vai deva devāḥ seṁdrapurogamāḥ

How then did he place his footsteps in the world of men? In the worlds of the gods, O god, the gods with Indra at their head dwell —

Verse 5 (padma.1.30.5)

tapasā mahatā brahmanbhaktā ye satataṁ prabhum śrīvarāhasya vasatirmaharlloke prakīrtitā

— O brahmin, gods who by great austerity are ever devoted to the Lord. The abode of Shri Varaha is declared to be in Maharloka.

Verse 6 (padma.1.30.6)

nṛsiṁhasya tathā proktā janaloke mahātmanaḥ trivikramasya vasatistapoloke prakīrtitā

Likewise, the abode of Nrisimha, the great soul, is declared in Janaloka. The abode of Trivikrama is declared to be in Tapoloka.

Verse 7 (padma.1.30.7)

lokānetānparityajya kathaṁ bhūmau padadvayam kṣetre paitāmahe cāsminpuṣkare yajñaparvate

Having left aside these worlds, how then are there a pair of footprints on the earth, in this field of the Grandsire, at Pushkara, on the Yajna-mountain?

Verse 8 (padma.1.30.8)

padāni kṛtavānbrahmanvistarānmama kīrtaya śrutena sarvapāpasya nāśo vai bhavitā dhruvam

Tell me at length, O brahmin, of these footprints that were made. By hearing this, the destruction of all sin will surely come about.

Verse 9 (padma.1.30.9)

pulastya uvāca samyakpṛcchasi bhostvaṁ yatsaṁśṛṇu tvaṁ samāhitaḥ yathāpūrvaṁ padanyāsaḥ kṛto devena viṣṇunā

Pulastya said: You ask well indeed; listen with a composed mind to how, of old, the placing of footsteps was made by the god Vishnu.

Verse 10 (padma.1.30.10)

yajñaparvatamāsādya śilāparvatarodhasi purā kṛtayuge bhīṣma devakāryārthasiddhaye

Having reached the Yajna-mountain, upon the bank of the Shila-mountain, of old, in the Krita Yuga, O Bhishma, for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose —

Verse 11 (padma.1.30.11)

viṣṇunā ca kṛtaṁ pūrvaṁ pṛthivyarthe paraṁtapa tridivaṁ sarvamānītaṁ dānavairbalavattaraiḥ

— this was done of old by Vishnu, for the sake of the earth, O scorcher of foes. All of heaven had been carried off by the most powerful demons.

Verse 12 (padma.1.30.12)

trailokyaṁ vaśamānīya jitvā devānsavāsavān dānavā yajñabhoktārastatrāsanbalavattarāḥ

Having brought the three worlds under their sway, having conquered the gods together with Vasava, the demons, most powerful, became the enjoyers of the sacrifices there.

Verse 13 (padma.1.30.13)

kṛtā bāṣkalinā sarve dānavena balīyasā evaṁbhūte tadā loke trailokye sacarācare

All this was done by the most powerful demon Bashkali. The three worlds, with all that moves and is unmoving, being thus afflicted —

Verse 14 (padma.1.30.14)

paramārtiṁ yayau śakro nirāśo jīvite kṛtaḥ sa bāṣkalirdānaveṁdro'vadhyoyaṁ mama saṁyuge

Shakra fell into extreme distress, made hopeless of his very life, thinking: 'This demon-lord Bashkali is unslayable by me in battle.'

Verse 15 (padma.1.30.15)

brahmaṇo varadānena sarveṣāṁ tu divaukasām tadahaṁ brahmaṇo loke vṛtaḥ sarvairdivaukasaiḥ

By the boon of Brahma he is unslayable by all the sky-dwellers. So, chosen by all the sky-dwellers, I shall go to the world of Brahma —

Verse 16 (padma.1.30.16)

vrajāmi śaraṇaṁ devaṁ gatiranyā na vidyate evaṁ vicimtya deveṁdro vṛtaḥ sarvairdivaukasaiḥ

— I go for refuge to that god; there is no other recourse. Having thus reflected, Devendra, chosen by all the sky-dwellers —

Verse 17 (padma.1.30.17)

jagāma tvarito bhīṣma yatra devaḥ pitāmahaḥ brahmaṇaḥ sa padaṁ prāpya vṛtastaiśca divaukasaiḥ

— went swiftly, O Bhishma, to where the god, the Grandsire, was. Having reached Brahma's abode, and surrounded by those sky-dwellers —

Verse 18 (padma.1.30.18)

abravījjagataḥ kāryaṁ prāptāmāpadamuttamām kiṁ na jānāsi vai deva yato no bhayamāgatam

— he spoke of the world's affair, the great calamity that had befallen it. 'Do you not know, O god, from where our fear has come?

Verse 19 (padma.1.30.19)

daityairyadāhṛtaṁ sarvaṁ varadānācca te prabho kathitaṁ vai mayā sarvaṁ bāṣkaleśca durātmanaḥ

— all has been carried off by the daityas, through your own boon, O Lord. I have told you everything about the evil-souled Bashkali.

Verse 20 (padma.1.30.20)

kriyatāṁ cāvilaṁbena pitā tvaṁ naḥ pitāmahaḥ tattvaṁ ciṁtaya deveśa śāṁtyarthaṁ jagatastviha

Let action be taken without delay; you are our father, our Grandsire. So do you consider, O Lord of gods, a means for the peace of the world here.

Verse 21 (padma.1.30.21)

teṣāṁ ca paśyatāṁ kiṁciccrautasmārtādikāḥ kriyāḥ na prāvartanta hānistu tairasmākaṁ dinedine

Before their very eyes, the rites of the Shrauta and Smarta traditions have ceased to proceed at all; and day by day we suffer loss because of them.

Verse 22 (padma.1.30.22)

yathā hi prākṛtaḥ kaścitsvārthamuddiśya bhāṣate vijñāpyase tathāsmābhirnirastopakṛtaiḥ sadā

Just as some common person speaks with only his own interest in view — even so are you being petitioned by us, who have ever been deprived of your help.

Verse 23 (padma.1.30.23)

yadyenopakṛtaṁ yasya sahasraguṇitaṁ punaḥ yo na tasyopakārāya tatkaroti vṛthā matiḥ

If a favour has been done to someone, and he does not, even a thousandfold, do something in return for that benefactor's good — his intellect is in vain.

Verse 24 (padma.1.30.24)

tasyopakāradagdhasya nistrapasyāsataḥ punaḥ narakeṣvapi saṁvāsastasya duṣkṛtakāriṇaḥ

For that shameless, wicked person, burdened by another's favour and yet ungrateful — for that evildoer, even a dwelling in hell is his due.

Verse 25 (padma.1.30.25)

naitāvataiva sādhutvaṁ kṛte yātu pratikriyā svārthaikaniṣṭhabuddhīnāmetannāpi pravartate

Goodness does not consist merely in this — that a return be made for what was done. This principle does not even apply to those whose intellect is fixed solely on self-interest.

Verse 26 (padma.1.30.26)

yadyasya nābhavatsthānaṁ jagato hyatra duḥkhadaṁ śatadhā hṛdayaṁ dīrṇaṁ tanna tṛptimupāgatam

If there were no place of refuge for one afflicted by the sorrow of this world — his heart, though torn a hundredfold, would still not attain satisfaction.

Verse 27 (padma.1.30.27)

tatra vā yatra gaṁtāsmi nimagnānuddharasva naḥ upāyakathanenāsya yena tejaḥ pravartate

So wherever I might go — deliver us who are sunk in distress, by telling of some means by which his power might be checked.

Verse 28 (padma.1.30.28)

yathākhyātaṁ mayā dṛṣṭaṁ jagattatsthamavekṣya tām niḥsvādhyāyavaṣaṭkāraṁ nivṛttotsavamaṁgalam

As I have described, having seen for myself the world in that state — devoid of Vedic recitation and the sacrificial cry of vashat, its festivals and auspicious rites having ceased —

Verse 29 (padma.1.30.29)

tyaktādhyayanasaṁyogaṁ muktavārtā parigraham daṁḍanītyā parityaktaṁ śvāsamātrāvaśeṣitam

— its practice of study abandoned, its commerce and possessions given up, forsaken by law and governance, reduced to mere breathing alone.

Verse 30 (padma.1.30.30)

jagadārtimapi prāptaṁ punaḥ kaṣṭatarāṁ daśām etāvatā hi kālena vayaṁ glānimupāgatāḥ

The world, having reached distress, goes again toward a still more grievous state. In this much time indeed, we have come to utter exhaustion.

Verse 31 (padma.1.30.31)

brahmovāca jānāmi bāṣkaliṁ taṁ tu varadānācca garvitam ajeyaṁ bhavatāṁ manye viṣṇusādhyo bhaviṣyati

Brahma said: I know that Bashkali, made proud by the boon. I consider him unconquerable by you; he will be subduable only by Vishnu.

Verse 32 (padma.1.30.32)

nirudhya saṁsthito brahmā bhāvaṁ tatvamayaṁ tadā samādhisthasya tasyaiva dhyānamātrāccaturbhujaḥ

Having thus restrained his mind and fixed himself in the true state of being, Brahma meditated; and by the mere meditation of him who was fixed in samadhi, the four-armed one —

Verse 33 (padma.1.30.33)

stokenaiva hi kālena ciṁtyamānaḥ svayaṁbhuvā ājagāma muhūrtena sarveṣāmeva paśyatām

— in a very short time, being meditated upon by the Self-born, arrived within a mere moment, before the very eyes of all.

Verse 34 (padma.1.30.34)

viṣṇuruvāca bho bho brahmannivarttasva dhyānādasmānnivāritaḥ yadarthamiṣyate dhyānaṁ sohaṁ tvāṁ samupāgataḥ

Vishnu said: O Brahma, cease — turn back from this meditation, for I have come. That for whose sake meditation is desired — I, that very one, have come to you.

Verse 35 (padma.1.30.35)

brahmovāca mahāprasāda eṣo'tra svāmino hi pradarśanam kasyānyasya bhavecceṣā ciṁtā yā jagataḥ prabho

Brahma said: This very appearance of the Lord is itself a great grace here. For who else's concern could this be — this concern which is for the world, O Lord?

Verse 36 (padma.1.30.36)

mamaiva tāvadutpattirjagadarthe vinirmitā jagadetattvadarthīyaṁ tattvato nāsti vismayaḥ

My own very origin was fashioned for the sake of the world. This world truly belongs to you — in reality there is no wonder in this.

Verse 37 (padma.1.30.37)

bhavatā pālanaṁ kāryaṁ saṁharedrudra eva tu evaṁbhūte jagatyasminśakrasyāsya mahātmanaḥ

The protection of the world is to be done by you; while it is Rudra alone who withdraws it at the end. Now, this world being in such a state, of this great-souled Shakra —

Verse 38 (padma.1.30.38)

hṛtaṁ rājyaṁ bāṣkalinā trailokyaṁ sacarācaram bhṛtyasya kriyatāṁ sāhyaṁ maṁtradānena keśava

— the kingdom, the three worlds with all that moves and is unmoving, has been seized by Bashkali. Let help be given, O Keshava, to your servant, by giving him counsel.

Verse 39 (padma.1.30.39)

vāsudeva uvāca bhavato varadānena avadhyaḥ sa tu sāṁpratam buddhisādhyaḥ sa vai kāryo baṁdhanādiha dānavaḥ

Vasudeva said: By your boon, he is indeed unslayable at present. He must be dealt with through intellect here, this demon, to be brought into bondage.

Verse 40 (padma.1.30.40)

vāmanohaṁ bhaviṣyāmi dānavānāṁ vināśakaḥ mayā saha vrajatveṣa bāṣkalestu niveśanam

I shall become a Vamana, the destroyer of the demons. Let this one go with me to the dwelling of Bashkali.

Verse 41 (padma.1.30.41)

tatra gatvā varaṁ tveṣa madarthe yācatāmimam vāmanasyāsya viprasya bhūme rājanpadatrayam

Having gone there, let him ask, on my behalf, for this boon: 'For this Vamana brahmin, O king, three paces of land —'

Verse 42 (padma.1.30.42)

prayacchasva mahābhāga yācñaiṣā tu mayā kṛtā śakreṇokto dānaveṁdro dadyātsvamapi jīvitam

— 'grant it, O most fortunate one; this request has been made by me.' The lord of demons, thus addressed by Shakra, would give even his own life —

Verse 43 (padma.1.30.43)

gṛhya pratigrahaṁ tasya dānavasya pitāmaha taṁ badhvā ca tato yatnātkṛtvā pātālavāsinam

— having accepted his gift, O Grandsire, of that demon; and then, having with effort bound him and made him a dweller in Patala —

Verse 44 (padma.1.30.44)

saukaraṁ rūpamāsthāya vadhārthaṁ ca durātmanaḥ bhaviṣyāmi na saṁdeho vraja śakra tvarānvitaḥ

— having assumed the form of a boar, for the destruction of that evil-souled one, I shall become his slayer — there is no doubt. Go, O Shakra, with haste.

Verse 45 (padma.1.30.45)

virarāma tamuktvaivamaṁtarddhānaṁ gataśca vai atha kālāṁtare viṣṇāvaditergarbhatāṁ gate

Having said this, he ceased, and disappeared. Then, after some time, when Vishnu entered into Aditi's womb —

Verse 46 (padma.1.30.46)

nimittānyatighorāṇi prādurbhūtānyanekaśaḥ samastajagadādhāre viṣṇau garbhatvamāgate

— many extremely terrible omens appeared, when Vishnu, the support of the entire world, entered into the state of being an embryo.

Verse 47 (padma.1.30.47)

śobhanaṁ hi tadā jātaṁ nimittaṁ caivamūrjitam mālatīkusumānāṁ tu sugaṁdhaḥ surabhirvavau

Then indeed also arose an auspicious and powerful omen: the fragrant, sweet scent of malati flowers wafted through the air.

Verse 48 (padma.1.30.48)

atha vihitavidhānaṁ kālamāsādya devastridaśagaṇahitārthaṁ sarvabhūtānukaṁpī vimala virala keśaścaṁdraśaṁkhodayaśrīraditi tanayabhāvaṁ devadevaścakāra

Then, having reached the ordained time, the God of gods, compassionate to all beings, for the good of the host of the thirty gods — of pure, sparse hair, radiant as the rising moon and conch — assumed the state of being Aditi's son.

Verse 49 (padma.1.30.49)

avatarati ca viṣṇau siddhadevāsurāṇāmanimiṣanayanānāṁ viprasedurmukhāni ativirajobhirvāyubhiḥ saṁvahadbhirdinamapi ca tadāsījjanma viṣṇoḥ sugarbhe

As Vishnu descended, the faces of the Siddhas, gods, and asuras, those unblinking-eyed ones, grew troubled; and with winds blowing free of the least dust, in the daytime itself came about the birth of Vishnu in that excellent womb.

Verse 50 (padma.1.30.50)

aditirajanagarbhā sāpi devī prayāṁtī natajaghanabharārttā maṁdasaṁcāraramyā alasavadanakhedaṁ pāṁḍubhāvaṁ vahaṁtī gurutaramavagāḍhaṁ garbhamevodvahaṁtī

Aditi, that goddess, dark in the throes of childbirth, moving along, burdened and pained by the weight of her hips bent low, lovely in her slow gait — bearing a weary languor on her face and a pallor, carrying that exceedingly heavy, deeply-borne womb —

Verse 51 (padma.1.30.51)

tataḥ praviṣṭe khalu garbhavāsaṁ nārāyaṇe bhūtabhaviṣyayogāt vinā apadaṁ prāptamanorathāni bhūtāni sarvāṇi tadā babhūvuḥ

Then, when Narayana had truly entered the dwelling of the womb, through the conjunction of past and future — all beings then, without calamity, had their desires fulfilled.

Verse 52 (padma.1.30.52)

samīraṇo vāti ca maṁdamaṁdaṁ patatsu varṣeṣu nagodbhaveṣu viviktamārgeṣu digaṁtareṣu janeṣu vai satyamupāgateṣu

The wind blew gently and softly, while showers born of the mountains fell; on clear paths, in the far quarters, people indeed had turned toward truth.

Verse 53 (padma.1.30.53)

vimucyamāne gagane rajobhiḥ śanaiśśanairnaśyati cāṁdhakāre udarāṁtargate viṣṇau drohabuddhistadābhavat

As the sky was being freed of dust, and the darkness was gradually vanishing — when Vishnu had come to be within the womb, the resolve to move against the demon then arose in him.

Verse 54 (padma.1.30.54)

tāṁ niśāmaya rājeṁdra devamāturyathākramam kimanukramaṇenaiva laṁghayāmi triviṣṭapam

Hear that in due order, O king of kings, concerning the mother of the gods. Vishnu, still in the womb, resolved: 'Why should I not, by mere striding, overleap heaven itself?

Verse 55 (padma.1.30.55)

bāṣkaliṁ dānaveṁdraṁ taṁ kuryāṁ pātālavāsinam śakrasya tu mayā dattaṁ dhanaṁ lāvaṇyameva ca

'That demon-lord Bashkali, may I make him a dweller of Patala. And the wealth and beauty that I have given to Shakra —

Verse 56 (padma.1.30.56)

dānavānāṁ vināśāya ekaiva prabhavāmyaham kṣipāmi śarajālāni cakrayānānyanekaśaḥ

'— for the destruction of the demons, I alone am fully capable of restoring them. I shall hurl networks of arrows, and many discus-missiles —

Verse 57 (padma.1.30.57)

gadāvrātāṁśca vividhāndānavānāṁ vināśane vibudhāndevalokasthānadhobhūmestu dānavān

'— and various multitudes of maces, for the destruction of the demons. The wise gods I shall establish in the world of the gods, and the demons beneath the earth —

Verse 58 (padma.1.30.58)

karomi kālayogena tattu kāryaṁ vratena me nissṛtā sahasā vāṇī vaktramevābhisaṁsthitā

'— I shall establish, through the union of time, by my own vow — that is my task.' Suddenly a voice issued forth, fixed right at Aditi's mouth —

Verse 59 (padma.1.30.59)

yenedaṁ ciṁtyate pūrvaṁ yanna dṛṣṭaṁ na ca śrutam baṁdhaṁ vai danumukhyasya kṛtaṁ kopena paśya me

— by which this had been thought of before, which had never been seen or heard: 'Behold, out of my anger, the binding of the chief of the demons has been accomplished!'

Verse 60 (padma.1.30.60)

kaśyapāya purā dattaṁ dhanaṁ lāvaṇyameva ca kimayaṁ vigatotsāho vāyavotha samākulāḥ

'— the wealth and the very beauty that were formerly given to Kashyapa —' Aditi wondered: 'Why has this voice lost its vigour? And why have the winds now become agitated?'

Verse 61 (padma.1.30.61)

bhramatīva hi me dṛṣṭirmaitadrūpaṁ praciṁtitam āviṣṭā kimahaṁ vacmi kenāpyasadṛśaṁ vacaḥ

'My sight indeed seems to reel; may this appearance not be as I imagined it. Am I possessed, that I speak, by some power, words so unlike my own?'

Verse 62 (padma.1.30.62)

vikalpavaśamāpannā'bhīkṣṇaṁ hṛdimamarśa sā dadhāra divyaṁ varṣāṇāṁ sahasraṁ divyamīśvaram

Falling under the sway of doubt, she repeatedly pondered in her heart. She bore that divine Lord for a thousand celestial years.

Verse 63 (padma.1.30.63)

tataḥ samabhavattasyāṁ vāmano bhūtavāmanaḥ jātena yena cakṣūṁṣi dānavānāṁ hṛtāni vai

Then, in her, was born the Vamana, the dwarf among all beings — by whose very birth the eyes of the demons were, as it were, stolen away.

Verse 64 (padma.1.30.64)

jātamātre tatastasmindevadeve janārdane nadyaḥ svacchāṁbuvāhinyo vavau gaṁdhavaho'nilaḥ

As soon as that God of gods, Janardana, was born — the rivers flowed clear-watered, and the fragrant wind wafted sweetly.

Verse 65 (padma.1.30.65)

kaśyapopi sukhaṁ lebhe tena putreṇa bhāsvatā sarveṣāṁ mānasotsāhastrailokyāṁtaravāsinām

Kashyapa too obtained happiness through that radiant son. There arose a mental exultation for all the dwellers within the three worlds —

Verse 66 (padma.1.30.66)

saṁjātamātre tu tato janādhipajanārdane svargaloke duṁdubhayo vinedustaiśca tāḍitāḥ

— then, as soon as Janardana, the lord of men, was born, in the world of heaven the kettle-drums resounded, being struck by the gods.

Verse 67 (padma.1.30.67)

atiprahaṛṣāttu jagattrayasya mohaśca duḥkhāni ca nāśamīyuḥ jago ca gaṁdharvagaṇotimātraṁ bhāvasvarairbhartṛvimiśritāśca

From the exceeding joy of the three worlds, delusion and sorrows went to their destruction. And the host of gandharvas sang, exceedingly, with feeling and melody, mingled with praises of the Lord.

Verse 68 (padma.1.30.68)

surāṁganāścāpi ca bhāvayuktā nṛtyaṁti tatrāpsarasāṁ samūhāḥ tathaiva vidyādharasiddhasaṁghā vimānayānairmuditā bhramaṁti

And the celestial women too, filled with feeling, danced — the throngs of apsarases there; and likewise the hosts of vidyadharas and siddhas roamed about, joyful, in their aerial cars.

Verse 69 (padma.1.30.69)

vadaṁti satyānṛtakāryanirṇayaṁ tathābhiraṁgaṁ pratidarśayaṁti gāyaṁti geyaṁ vinivṛttarāgā muhurmuhurduḥkhasukhaprabhūtāḥ

They spoke of the resolution of true and false affairs, and likewise displayed their limbs with delight. They sang the songs of praise, their passions stilled, again and again, though ordinarily arising from sorrow and joy alike.

Verse 70 (padma.1.30.70)

nṛtyaṁti vai svargagatāśca te tu dharmārjitaṁ svargamito vrajaṁti iti vigataviṣāde nirmale jīvaloke timiranikaramuktā nirvṛtiṁ prāptukāmāḥ

Those who had gone to heaven danced too, as if proceeding from here to the heaven earned by righteousness. Thus, the world of the living, its sorrow gone, made pure, freed from masses of darkness, longing to attain that same bliss —

Verse 71 (padma.1.30.71)

tatrocuḥ kecidurvyāṁ jayajaya bhagavansaṁprahṛṣṭāśca kecit tvevaṁ proktapraṇādairavirala manasaścānuvādaistathānyaiḥ dhyāyaṁtenye nigūḍhaṁ jananabhaya jarāmṛtyuvicchedahetorityevaṁ kṛtsnamāsījjagadidamakhilaṁ sarvataḥ saṁprahṛṣṭam

— there, some upon the earth cried, 'Victory, victory, O Lord!', and some, greatly overjoyed, uttered such proclamations without ceasing, others repeated them again and again; still others meditated in secret, for the sake of cutting off the fear of birth, old age, and death — thus, in every way, this entire world became, on every side, filled with rejoicing.

Verse 72 (padma.1.30.72)

paramāsādya yaṁ viṣṇuṁ brahmāha jagataḥ kṛte jātoyaṁ bhavatāmarthe vāmano yadapīśvaraḥ

Having attained that supreme Vishnu, Brahma declared, for the sake of the world: 'This Vamana, though he is the Lord, has been born for your sake.'

Verse 73 (padma.1.30.73)

eṣa brahmā ca viṣṇuśca eṣa eva maheśvaraḥ eṣa vedāśca yajñāśca svargaścaiṣa na saṁśayaḥ

He is Brahma, and he is Vishnu, he alone is Maheshvara. He is the Vedas, and the sacrifices, and he alone is heaven — there is no doubt.

Verse 74 (padma.1.30.74)

viṣṇuvyāptamidaṁ sarvaṁ jagatsthāvarajaṁgamam ekaḥ sa tu pṛthaktvena svayaṁbhūriti viśrutaḥ

All this world, moving and unmoving, is pervaded by Vishnu. He alone, though manifest distinctly, is renowned as the Self-born.

Verse 75 (padma.1.30.75)

yathārthavarṇake sthāne vicitraḥ sphāṭiko maṇiḥ tato guṇavaśāttasya svayaṁbhoranuvarttanam

Just as a crystal gem, placed beside an object of true hue, takes on a varied appearance — so, by the force of its own quality, does the Self-born's conforming to different forms take place.

Verse 76 (padma.1.30.76)

yathā hi gārhapatyognirianyasaṁjñāṁ punarvrajet labheta saṁjñāṁ bhagavānbrāhmādiṣu tathā hyasau

Just as the household fire might again take on another name when used for a different rite — even so does the Lord take on different names among the forms beginning with Brahma.

Verse 77 (padma.1.30.77)

sarvathā vāmano devo devakāryaṁ kariṣyati evaṁ ciṁtayatāṁ teṣāṁ bhāvitānāṁ divaukasām

'In every way, the god Vamana will accomplish the work of the gods.' While they, the sky-dwellers, filled with such devotion, were thus reflecting —

Verse 78 (padma.1.30.78)

jagāma śakrasahito bāṣkaleśca niveśanam dūrādeva ca tāṁ dṛṣṭvā purīṁ tasya samāvṛtām

He went, together with Shakra, to the dwelling of Bashkali. And, seeing from afar itself that city of his, all encircled —

Verse 79 (padma.1.30.79)

nirmāṁsagātraisturagairalpakarṇairmanojavaiḥ dīrghagrīvākṣikūṭaiśca manojñairupaśobhitām

— and beautified with lean-bodied horses, small-eared, swift as thought, with long necks and lofty foreheads, most charming —

Verse 82 (padma.1.30.82)

padmagarbhasuvarṇābhāḥ pūrṇacaṁdranibhānanāḥ saṁllāpollāpakuśalāstatra veśyāḥ sahasraśaḥ

— that city where dwelt courtesans by the thousand, of golden hue like the lotus's pericarp, their faces resembling the full moon, skilled in charming conversation and repartee.

Verse 83 (padma.1.30.83)

na tatpuṇyaṁ na sā vidyā na tacchilpaṁ na sā kalā bāṣkalerna pure'syātha nivāsaṁ pratigacchati

There was no merit, no learning, no craft, and no art that did not come to dwell in this city of Bashkali.

udyānaśatasaṁbādhaṁ samājotsavamālini anvite danumukhyaiśca sarvairaṁtakavarjitaiḥ

— crowded with hundreds of gardens, garlanded with festive gatherings, filled with all the foremost of the Danavas, as if all free from death —

Verse 85 (padma.1.30.85)

vīṇāveṇumṛdaṁgānāṁ śabdaiḥ sarvatra nādite sadā prahṛṣṭā danujā bahuratnopaśobhitāḥ

— resounding everywhere with the sounds of vinas, flutes, and mridangas; the demons, ever joyful, adorned with abundant gems —

Verse 86 (padma.1.30.86)

krīḍamānāḥ pradṛśyaṁte merāviva yathāmarāḥ brahmaghoṣo mahāṁstatra danuvṛddhairudīritaḥ

— were seen sporting, like the immortals upon Meru. A great sound of Vedic recitation was there, raised up by the elder Danavas.

Verse 87 (padma.1.30.87)

sājyadhūmena cāgnīnāṁ vāyunā naṣṭakilbiṣe sugaṁdhadhūpavikṣepa surabhīkṛtamārute

Verse 88 (padma.1.30.88)

sugaṁdhidanujākīrṇe pure tasmiṁstu bāṣkali trailokyaṁ tu vaśe kṛtvā sukhenāste sa dānavaḥ

— in that city thronged with fragrant demons, Bashkali, having brought the three worlds under his sway, dwelt there in happiness, that demon.

Verse 89 (padma.1.30.89)

tatrasthaḥ pālayannāste trailokyaṁ sacarācaraṁ dharmajñaśca kṛtajñaśca satyavādī jiteṁdriyaḥ

Dwelling there, he governed the three worlds together with the moving and unmoving; he was a knower of dharma, grateful, truthful in speech, and of subdued senses.

Verse 90 (padma.1.30.90)

Verse 96 (padma.1.30.96)

Under that demon-king, there existed no one base at all — no one wretched, or diseased, or short-lived, or sorrowful —

Verse 97 (padma.1.30.97)

— the great-souled Purandara sought to conciliate that best of daityas, that foremost of the Danu-clan, that demon endowed with splendor, blazing like the sun —

Verse 99 (padma.1.30.99)

trailokyadhāraṇe śaktaṁ vismitaḥ so'bhavattadā iṁdraṁ purāgataṁ dṛṣṭvā dānaveṁdrāya pārthiva

— capable of sustaining the three worlds. He, Indra, became astonished then. O king, seeing Indra arrived at the city, the lord of demons was informed —

Verse 100 (padma.1.30.100)

idamūcustadāgatvā dānavā yuddhadurmadāḥ āścaryamiti vai kṛtvā iṁdrobhyeti purīṁ tava

— then the demons, arrogant in battle, came and said this: 'It is indeed a wonder — Indra approaches your city!'

Verse 101 (padma.1.30.101)

Verse 103 (padma.1.30.103)

etasminneva kāle tu vāmanaḥ sa ca vāsavaḥ āgatau danunāthena premṇā caivāvalokitau

Verse 108 (padma.1.30.108)

pariṣvajyābhinandyainaṁ gṛhaṁ prāveśayatsvakam tasya svāgatamarghyādyaiḥ kṛtvā pūjāṁ prayatnataḥ

adya me saphalaṁ janma pūrṇāḥ sarve manorathāḥ yastvāṁ paśyāmi śakrādya svayameva gṛhāgatam

Verse 112 (padma.1.30.112)

Verse 172 (padma.1.30.172)

bāṣkaliruvāca padatrayaṁ vāmanāya devarāja pratīccha me

Bashkali said: 'O king of gods, accept from me the three paces of land for Vamana.'

Verse 173 (padma.1.30.173)

tatra tvaṁ suciraṁ kālaṁ sukhī surapate vasa evamuktvā bāṣkalinā vāmanāya padatrayam

'And there, O lord of the gods, dwell happily for a very long time.' Having said this, three paces of land were given by Bashkali to Vamana —

Verse 174 (padma.1.30.174)

toyapūrvaṁ tadā dattaṁ prīyatāṁ me hariḥ svayam datte tu dānaveṁdreṇa tyaktvā rūpaṁ ca vāmanam

— given then together with a libation of water: 'May Hari himself be pleased with me.' And when it had been given by the demon-lord, having abandoned the form of Vamana —

Verse 175 (padma.1.30.175)

harirācakrame lokāndevānāṁ hitakāmyayā yajñaparvatamāsādya gatvā caiva udaṅmukhaḥ

— Hari strode across the worlds, desiring the welfare of the gods; having reached the Yajna-mountain, and having gone there, facing north —

Verse 176 (padma.1.30.176)

devasya vāmacaraṇe niviṣṭo dānavālayaḥ tatra kramaṁ sa prathamaṁ dadau sūrye jagatpatiḥ

— with the demon's dwelling settled beneath the god's left foot — there, the Lord of the world first placed his stride at the Sun.

Verse 177 (padma.1.30.177)

dvitīyaṁ ca dhruve devastṛtīyena ca pārthiva brahmāṁḍastāḍitastena devenādbhutakarmaṇā

The second stride the god placed at Dhruva, and with the third, O king, the shell of the cosmic egg was struck by that god of wondrous deeds.

Verse 178 (padma.1.30.178)

aṁguṣṭhāgreṇa bhinneṁḍe jalaṁ bhūri viniḥsṛtam plāvayitvā brahmalokānsarvānlokānanukramāt

The cosmic egg having been pierced by the tip of his big toe, abundant water gushed forth, and, having flooded the worlds of Brahma, flowed on through all the worlds in order —

Verse 179 (padma.1.30.179)

dhruvasthānaṁ sūryalokaṁ plāvya taṁ yajñaparvatam praviṣṭā puṣkaraṁ dhārā dhautvā viṣṇupadāni sā

— having flooded the place of Dhruva, the world of the Sun, and that Yajna-mountain — that stream entered Pushkara, having washed the footprints of Vishnu.

Verse 180 (padma.1.30.180)

padāni yāni jātāni vaiṣṇavāni dharātale tatrāśrame tu yo gatvā snānaṁ vāpyāṁ samācaret

As for those footprints of Vishnu that came to be upon the surface of the earth — whoever, having gone to that hermitage, performs the bath in the pool —

Verse 181 (padma.1.30.181)

aśvamedhaphalaṁ tasya darśanādeva jāyate ekaviṁśagaṇopeto vaikuṁṭhe vāsamāpnuyāt

— for him, the fruit of the Ashvamedha arises from mere sight of the footprints; joined with twenty-one generations of his family, he attains a dwelling in Vaikuntha.

Verse 182 (padma.1.30.182)

bhuktvā tu vipulānbhogānkalpānāṁ tu śatatrayam tadaṁte jāyate rājā sārvabhaumaḥ kṣitāviha

Having enjoyed abundant pleasures for three hundred kalpas, at the end of that he is born, here on earth, a universal sovereign king.

Verse 183 (padma.1.30.183)

toyadhārā tu sā bhīṣma aṁguṣṭhāgrādviniḥsṛtā nadī sā vaiṣṇavī proktā viṣṇupādasamudbhavā

That stream of water, O Bhishma, having issued from the tip of his toe, is called the Vaishnavi river, arisen from the foot of Vishnu.

Verse 184 (padma.1.30.184)

anena kāraṇenābhūdgaṁgā viṣṇupadī nṛpa yayā sarvamidaṁ vyāptaṁ trailokyaṁ sacarācaram

For this reason, O king, the Ganga came to be called Vishnupadi — by which all this, the three worlds together with the moving and unmoving, is pervaded.

Verse 185 (padma.1.30.185)

aṁguṣṭhāgrakṣatādaṁḍādyatpraviṣṭaṁ jalaṁ śubham prāptaṁ devanadītvaṁ tu yātu viṣṇupadī nadī

That auspicious water which entered through the wound made by the tip of the toe upon the cosmic shell — having attained the state of being the river of the gods — let it be known as the river Vishnupadi.

Verse 186 (padma.1.30.186)

devanadyā tayā vyāptaṁ brahmāṁḍaṁ sacarācaram vibhūtibhirmahābhāga sarvānugrahakāmyayā

By that divine river, O most fortunate one, out of the desire to bless all beings, the cosmic egg, together with the moving and unmoving, is pervaded with her glories.

Verse 187 (padma.1.30.187)

sa bāṣkalirvāmanena uktaḥ pūraya me kramān adhomukhastadā jāta uttaraṁ nāsya viṁdati

That Bashkali was addressed by Vamana: 'Fulfill my paces.' He then became downcast, and found no answer to give him.

Verse 188 (padma.1.30.188)

maunībhūtaṁ tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā purodhā vākyamabravīt svābhāvikī dānaśaktirna tu sraṣṭuṁ vayaṁ kṣamāḥ

Seeing him fallen silent, the priest spoke these words: 'The power to give is a thing that is natural; we, however, are not capable of creating land out of nothing.'

Verse 189 (padma.1.30.189)

yāvatīyaṁ dharā deva sā dattānena te prabho ukto bāṣkalinā viṣṇuryāvanmātrā vasuṁdharā

'As much as this earth is, O god, that has been given by him to you, O lord.' Vishnu was addressed by Bashkali: 'As much as the earth measures —'

Verse 190 (padma.1.30.190)

yā sṛṣṭā bhavatā pūrvaṁ sā mayā na ca gopitā alpābhūmirbhavāndīrgho na tu sṛṣṭerahaṁ kṣamaḥ

'— that which was created by you of old, that has not been withheld by me. The land is small, and you are vast; I, however, am not capable of further creation.'

Verse 191 (padma.1.30.191)

icchāśaktiḥ prabhavati prabhoste deva sarvadā niruttarastadā viṣṇurmatvā taṁ satyavādinam

'The power of will always prevails for you, O lord, O god.' Vishnu then, having no reply, and considering him truthful —

Verse 192 (padma.1.30.192)

brūhi dānavamukhya tvaṁ kaṁ te kāmaṁ karomyaham mama hastagataṁ toyaṁ tvayā dattaṁ tu dānava

— said: 'Tell me, O chief of demons, what desire of yours shall I fulfill? The water that came into my hand — that was given by you, O demon —'

Verse 193 (padma.1.30.193)

tena tvaṁ varayogyosi varāṇāṁ bhājanaṁ śubhaṁ dāsyehaṁ bhavataḥ kāmamarthīyena vṛṇuṣva ha

'— by that, you are worthy of a boon, an auspicious vessel for boons. I shall grant your desire; choose then, as a petitioner.'

Verse 194 (padma.1.30.194)

vijñapto hi tadā tena devadevo janārdanaḥ bhaktiṁ vṛṇomi deveśa tvaddhastānmaraṇaṁ hi me

Then the God of gods, Janardana, was thus petitioned by him: 'I choose devotion, O Lord of gods; and let my death be by your very hand.'

Verse 195 (padma.1.30.195)

vrajāmi śvetadvīpaṁ te durlabhaṁ tu tapasvinām āhaivamukte viṣṇustaṁ tiṣṭhasvaiva yugāṁtaram

'And let me go to your Shvetadvipa, which is hard indeed for even ascetics to attain.' When this had been said, Vishnu spoke to him: 'Remain, then, for another age —'

Verse 196 (padma.1.30.196)

vārāharūpī yadāhaṁ pravekṣyāmi dharātalam tadā haniṣyehaṁ tvāṁ tu madagre ca yadaiṣyasi

'— when I, in the form of a boar, shall enter the surface of the earth, then I shall slay you, when you come before me.'

Verse 197 (padma.1.30.197)

uktotha dānavastena apāsarppattadagrataḥ vāmanena samākrāṁtāḥ sarve lokāstadā nṛpa

Thus addressed by him, the demon then withdrew from his presence. O king, all the worlds were then overrun by Vamana.

Verse 198 (padma.1.30.198)

asuraistaistadā tyaktaṁ devānāṁ satyabhāṣaṇam devo hṛtvā tu trailokyaṁ jagāmādarśanaṁ vibhuḥ

The truthfulness of speech of the gods was thus acknowledged by those asuras. And the Lord, having taken back the three worlds, went out of sight.

Verse 199 (padma.1.30.199)

pātālanilayaścāpi sukhamāste sa bāṣkali śakropi pālayāmāsa vipaścidbhuvanatrayam

And Bashkali too, having his dwelling in Patala, remained there in happiness; and Shakra, the wise one, governed the three worlds.

Verse 200 (padma.1.30.200)

ayaṁ traivikramo nāma prādurbhāvo jagadguroḥ gaṁgāsaṁbhavasaṁyuktassarvakalmaṣanāśanaḥ

This is the manifestation named Traivikrama, the three-strider, of the Guru of the world, joined with the origin of the Ganga, the destroyer of all sin.

Verse 201 (padma.1.30.201)

viṣṇoḥ padānāmeṣā te utpattiḥ kathitā nṛpa yāṁ śrutvā tu naro loke sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate

This origin of the footprints of Vishnu has been told to you, O king; hearing which, a man in this world is released from all sins.

Verse 202 (padma.1.30.202)

duḥsvapnaṁ durviciṁtyaṁ ca duḥṣkaraṁ duḥṣkṛtāni ca kṣipraṁ hi nāśamāyāṁti dṛṣṭe viṣṇupadatraye

Bad dreams, evil thoughts, difficult undertakings, and misdeeds — all swiftly go to destruction when the three footprints of Vishnu are beheld.

Verse 203 (padma.1.30.203)

yugānukramaśo dṛṣṭvā pāpino jaṁtavastathā sūkṣmatā darśitā bhīṣma viṣṇunā padadarśane

Having observed, in the succession of the yugas, sinful creatures likewise — this subtlety of grace has been shown, O Bhishma, by Vishnu, in the sight of his footprints.

Verse 204 (padma.1.30.204)
