The Tale of Shivaduti

Chapter 30All chaptersChapter 32

Verse 1 (padma.1.31.1)

bhīṣma uvāca bhagavanmahadāścaryaṁ bāṣkalerbaṁdhanaṁ hi yat kṛtaṁ trivikramaṁ rūpaṁ yadā saṁyamito bali

Bhishma said: O venerable one, it is indeed a great wonder that Bali was bound — how the form of Trivikrama was assumed when Bali was restrained.

Verse 2 (padma.1.31.2)

etanmayā śrutaṁ pūrvaṁ kathyamānaṁ dvijottamaiḥ pātāle vasatedyāpi vairocanasuto bali

I have heard this told before by the foremost of brahmins — that Bali, son of Virochana, still dwells today in Patala.

Verse 3 (padma.1.31.3)

nāgatīrthaṁ yathābhūtaṁ piśācānāṁ tu saṁbhavam śivadūtī kathaṁ cātra keneyaṁ maṁgalīkṛtā

How did Nagatirtha come to be, and how did the pishachas arise? How did Shivaduti come here, and by whom was she made auspicious?

Verse 4 (padma.1.31.4)

aṁtarikṣe puṣkaraṁ tu kena nītaṁ mahāmune etadācakṣva me sarvaṁ yathā bāṣkalibaṁdhanam

O great sage, by whom was Pushkara carried into the sky? Tell me all this in full, along with how Bali was bound.

Verse 5 (padma.1.31.5)

bhūmiprakramaṇaṁ pūrvaṁ kṛtaṁ devena viṣṇunā dvitīye kāraṇaṁ kiṁ ca yena devaścakāra ha

Earlier the striding of the earth was done by the god Vishnu; what was the reason for the second time that the god did it again?

Verse 6 (padma.1.31.6)

tattvatastvaṁ hi tatsarvaṁ yathābhūtaṁ tathā vada pāpakṣayakaraṁ hyetacchrotavyaṁ bhūtimicchatā

Tell me all of this truly, exactly as it happened, for this is worthy to be heard by one who desires prosperity, and it destroys sin.

Verse 7 (padma.1.31.7)

pulastya uvāca praśnabhārastvayā rājankautukādeva kīrtitaḥ kathayāmi hi tatsarvaṁ yathābhūtaṁ nṛpottama

Pulastya said: O king, this weighty question you have asked out of curiosity; I shall tell you all of it exactly as it happened, O best of kings.

Verse 8 (padma.1.31.8)

viṣṇoḥ padānuṣaṁgeṇa baṁdhanaṁ bāṣkaleriha śrutaṁ tadbhavatā sarvaṁ mayā te parikīrtitaṁ

The binding of Bali here through the sequence of Vishnu's strides — all of that you have already heard, having been told fully by me.

Verse 9 (padma.1.31.9)

bhūyopi viṣṇunā bhīṣma prāpte vaivasvateṁtare trailokyaṁ balinākrāṁtaṁ viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā

Again, O Bhishma, when the Vaivasvata age had come and the three worlds were overrun by Bali, the mighty Vishnu—

Verse 10 (padma.1.31.10)

gatvā tvekākinā yajñe tathā saṁyamito bali bhūyopi devadevena bhūmeḥ prakramaṇaṁ kṛtam

—went alone to the sacrifice, and thus Bali was restrained once more; and again the striding of the earth was done by the God of gods.

Verse 11 (padma.1.31.11)

prādurbhāvo vāmanasya tathābhūto narādhipa punastrivikramo bhūtvā vāmano bhūdavāmanaḥ

Such, O king, was the appearance of Vamana; becoming Trivikrama once more, the dwarf Vamana ceased to be a dwarf.

Verse 12 (padma.1.31.12)

utpattireṣā te sarvā kathitā kurunaṁdana nāgānāṁ tu yathā tīrthaṁ tacchṛṇuṣva mahāvrata

This whole origin has been told to you, O joy of the Kurus. Now hear, O one of great vows, how the tirtha of the Nagas came to be.

Verse 13 (padma.1.31.13)

anaṁto vāsukiścaiva takṣakaśca mahābalaḥ karkoṭakaśca nāgeṁdraḥ padmaścānyaḥ sarīsṛpaḥ

Ananta, and Vasuki, and the mighty Takshaka, and Karkotaka, lord of serpents, and another serpent, Padma—

Verse 14 (padma.1.31.14)

mahāpadmastathā śaṁkhaḥ kulikaścāparājitaḥ ete kaśyapadāyādā etairāpūritaṁ jagat

—Mahapadma, Shankha, and Kulika the unconquered — these are the offspring of Kashyapa, and by them the world was filled.

Verse 15 (padma.1.31.15)

eteṣāṁ tu prasūtyā tu idamāpūritaṁ jagat kuṭilābhīmakarmāṇastīkṣṇāsyāśca viṣolbaṇāḥ

By their progeny this world was filled — crooked, terrible in their deeds, sharp-fanged, and fierce with venom.

Verse 16 (padma.1.31.16)

daṣṭvā maṁdāṁścamanujānkuryurbhasmakṣaṇāttu te taddarśanādbhavennāśo manuṣyāṇāṁ narādhipa

Biting careless men, they would reduce them to ashes in an instant; and merely by the sight of them, O king, men would perish.

Verse 17 (padma.1.31.17)

ahanyahani jāyeta kṣayaḥ paramadāruṇaḥ ātmanastu kṣayaṁ dṛṣṭvā prajāssarvāssamaṁtataḥ

Day after day a most terrible destruction occurred; seeing their own destruction all around—

Verse 18 (padma.1.31.18)

jagmuḥ śaraṇyaṁ śaraṇaṁ brahmāṇaṁ parameśvaraṁ imamevārthamuddiśya prajāḥ sarvā mahīpate

—all the creatures went for refuge to Brahma, the supreme lord who alone is worthy of refuge, for this very purpose, O king of the earth.

Verse 19 (padma.1.31.19)

ūcuḥ kamalajaṁ dṛṣṭvā purāṇaṁ brahmasaṁjñakam prajā ūcuḥ devadeveśa lokānāṁ prasūte parameśvara

Seeing the lotus-born ancient one called Brahma, they spoke. The creatures said: O lord of the gods, O supreme lord and progenitor of the worlds—

Verse 20 (padma.1.31.20)

trāhi nastīkṣṇadaṁṣṭrāṇāṁ bhujagānāṁ mahātmanām dinedine bhayaṁ deva paśyāmaḥ kṛpaṇā bhṛśam

—save us from the sharp-fanged, mighty serpents; day by day, O lord, we see, wretched as we are, our terror growing.

Verse 21 (padma.1.31.21)

manuṣyapaśupakṣyādi tatsarvaṁ bhasmasādbhavet tvayā sṛṣṭiḥ kṛtā deva kṣīyate tu bhujaṁgamaiḥ

Men, beasts, birds, and all else are being reduced to ashes; O god, the creation made by you is being destroyed by the serpents.

Verse 22 (padma.1.31.22)

etajjñātvā yaducitaṁ tatkuruṣva pitāmaha brahmovāca ahaṁ rakṣāṁ vidhāsyāmi bhavatīnāṁ na saṁśayaḥ

Knowing this, do whatever is fitting, O grandsire. Brahma said: I shall arrange for your protection, without doubt.

Verse 23 (padma.1.31.23)

vrajadhvaṁ svaniketāni nīrujo gatasādhvasāḥ evamukte prajāḥ sarvā brahmaṇā'vyaktamūrtinā

Go to your own homes, free from illness and fear. When Brahma, of unmanifest form, had spoken thus, all the creatures—

Verse 24 (padma.1.31.24)

ājagmuḥ paramaprītāḥ stutvā caiva svayaṁbhuvam prayātāsu prajāsvevaṁ tānāhūya bhujaṁgamān

—greatly pleased, having praised the Self-born one, departed. When the creatures had thus gone, he summoned the serpents—

Verse 25 (padma.1.31.25)

śaśāpa paramakruddho vāsukipramukhāṁstadā brahmovāca ahanyahani bhūtāni bhakṣyaṁte vai durātmabhiḥ

—being greatly enraged, cursed those led by Vasuki. Brahma said: Day after day living beings are devoured by you evil ones—

Verse 26 (padma.1.31.26)

naśyaṁti tūragairdaṣṭā manuṣyāḥ paśavastathā yasmānmatprabhavānnityaṁ kṣayaṁ nayatha mānuṣān

—bitten by serpents, men and beasts perish. Since you constantly bring to destruction the men who have arisen from me—

Verse 27 (padma.1.31.27)

atonyasminbhave bhūyānmamakopātsudāruṇāt bhavatāṁ hi kṣayo ghoro bhāvi vaivasvateṁtare

—therefore, from my most terrible wrath, in another age to come, a dreadful destruction shall befall you, in the Vaivasvata Manvantara.

Verse 28 (padma.1.31.28)

tathānyaḥ somavaṁśīyo rājā vai janamejayaḥ dhakṣyate sarpasatreṇa pradīpte havyavāhane

There will be another king of the lunar dynasty, Janamejaya; he will burn you in the serpent-sacrifice, in the blazing fire.

Verse 29 (padma.1.31.29)

mātṛṣvasuśca tanayāṁstārkṣyo vo bhakṣayiṣyati evaṁ vo bhavitā nāśaḥ sarveṣāṁ duṣṭacetasām

And Tarkshya (Garuda), the sons of your maternal aunt, will devour you. Thus shall destruction come upon all of you evil-minded ones.

Verse 30 (padma.1.31.30)

śaptvā kulasahasraṁ tu yāvadekaṁ kulaṁ sthitam evamukte tu vepaṁto brahmaṇā bhujagottamāḥ

Having cursed a thousand families, until only one family should remain. When Brahma had spoken thus, the foremost serpents, trembling—

Verse 31 (padma.1.31.31)

nipatya pādayostasya idamūcurvacastadā bhagavankuṭilā jātirasmākaṁ bhūtabhāvana

—fell at his feet and spoke these words: O lord, O source of all beings, our very nature is crooked—

Verse 32 (padma.1.31.32)

viṣolbaṇatvaṁ krūratvaṁ daṁdaśūkatvameva ca saṁpāditaṁ tvayā deva idānīṁ śapase kathaṁ

—venomousness, cruelty, and the very nature of biting were fashioned by you, O god; how then do you now curse us for it?

Verse 33 (padma.1.31.33)

brahmovāca yadi nāma mayā sṛṣṭā bhavaṁtaḥ kuṭilāśayāḥ tataḥ kiṁ bahunā nityaṁ bhakṣayadhvaṁ gatavyathāḥ

Brahma said: If indeed you were created crooked-natured by me, then what need of many words — go on devouring, free of anxiety.

Verse 34 (padma.1.31.34)

nāgā ūcuḥ maryādāṁ kuru deveśa sthānaṁ caiva pṛthakpṛthak manuṣyāṇāṁ tathāsmākaṁ samayaṁ deva kāraya

The Nagas said: O lord of gods, set a boundary and separate dwelling places; make an agreement, O god, between men and ourselves.

Verse 35 (padma.1.31.35)

śāpo yo bhavatā datto manuṣyo janamejayaḥ nāśaṁ naḥ sarpasatreṇa ulbaṇaṁ ca kariṣyati

The curse you have given us — that the man Janamejaya shall bring terrible destruction upon us through the serpent-sacrifice—

Verse 36 (padma.1.31.36)

brahmovāca jaratkāruriti khyāto bhavitā brahmavittamaḥ jaratkanyā tasya deyā tasyāmutpatsyate sutaḥ

Brahma said: There will be one renowned as Jaratkaru, foremost knower of Brahman; to him a maiden named Jaratkaru shall be given, and from her a son will be born.

Verse 37 (padma.1.31.37)

rakṣāṁ kartā sa vo vipro bhavatāṁ kulapāvanaḥ tathā karomi nāgānāṁ samayaṁ manujaiḥ saha

That brahmin, the purifier of your race, will be your protector. Thus I shall establish an agreement between the Nagas and men.

Verse 38 (padma.1.31.38)

tadekamanasaḥ sarve śṛṇudhvaṁ mama śāsanam sutalaṁ vitalaṁ caiva tṛtīyaṁ ca talātalam

Now, with one mind, all of you hear my ordinance: Sutala, Vitala, and the third, Talatala—

Verse 39 (padma.1.31.39)

dattaṁ ca triprakāraṁ vo gṛhaṁ tatra gamiṣyatha tatra bhogānbahuvidhānbhuṁjānā mama śāsanāt

—these three kinds of dwellings are given to you; you shall go there. There, enjoying manifold pleasures by my command—

Verse 40 (padma.1.31.40)

tiṣṭhadhvaṁ saptamaṁ yāvatkālaṁ taṁ tu punaḥpunaḥ tato vaivasvatasyādau kāśyapeyo bhaviṣyati

—remain there until the seventh such period comes again. Then, at the beginning of the Vaivasvata Manvantara, a son of Kashyapa will be born—

Verse 41 (padma.1.31.41)

dāyādaḥ sarvadevānāṁ suparṇassarpabhakṣakaḥ tadā prasūtiḥ sarpāṇāṁ dagdhā vai citrabhānunā

—the heir of all the gods, Suparna (Garuda), the devourer of serpents. Then the progeny of serpents will be burned by fire.

Verse 42 (padma.1.31.42)

bhavatāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ ye ye krūrā bhogino durvinītāsteṣāmaṁto bhāvitā nānyathaitat

This will happen to all of you, without doubt. Whichever serpents are cruel and unruly, their end is certain to come — this shall not be otherwise.

Verse 43 (padma.1.31.43)

kālavyāptaṁ bhakṣayadhvaṁ ca satvaṁ tathāpakāre cakṛte manuṣyam maṁtrauṣadhairgāruḍaiścaiva taṁtrairbaṁdhairjuṣṭā mānavā ye bhavaṁti

Devour creatures only when your time allows, and only when a man has done you harm. Those men who are protected by mantras, herbs, Garuda-charms, tantras, and bonds—

Verse 44 (padma.1.31.44)

tebhyo bhītairvartitavyaṁ na cānyaccitte kāryaṁ cānyathā vo vināśaḥ itīrite brahmaṇā vai bhujaṁgā jagmuḥ sthānaṁ sutalākhyaṁ hi sarve

—of them you must remain afraid, and think of nothing else, otherwise destruction will come to you. When Brahma had spoken thus, all the serpents went to the abode called Sutala.

Verse 45 (padma.1.31.45)

tasthurbhogānbhuṁjamānāśca sarve rasātale līlayā saṁsthitāste evaṁ śāpaṁ tute labdhvāprasādaṁ ca caturmukhāt

There they dwelt, enjoying pleasures, all abiding at ease in Rasatala. Thus, having received both the curse and the grace from the four-faced one—

Verse 46 (padma.1.31.46)

tasthuḥ pātālanilaye muditenāṁtarātmanā tataḥ kālāṁta rebhūte punarevaṁ vyaciṁtayan

—they remained in the abode of Patala with joyful hearts. Then, when a long time had passed, they again thought thus:

Verse 47 (padma.1.31.47)

bhavitā bharato rājā pāṁḍaveyo mahāyaśāḥ asmākaṁ tu kṣayakaro daivayogena kenacit

There will come a king of great fame, of Bharata's race, a scion of the Pandavas, who by some working of fate will bring about our destruction—

Verse 48 (padma.1.31.48)

kathaṁ tribhuvane nāthaḥ sarveṣāṁ ca pitāmahaḥ sṛṣṭikartā jagadvaṁdyaḥ śāpamasmāsu dattavān

How could the lord of the three worlds, the grandsire of all, the creator, worshipped by the universe, have given a curse upon us?

Verse 49 (padma.1.31.49)

Apart from the god Virinchi (Brahma) there is no other refuge. In the excellent Vairaja abode, there that god dwells.

Verse 50 (padma.1.31.50)

sa devaḥ puṣkarastho vai yajñaṁ yajati sāṁpratam gatvā prasādayāmastaṁ varaṁ tuṣṭaḥ pradāsyati

That god, dwelling at Pushkara, is now performing a sacrifice; let us go and propitiate him — pleased, he will grant us a boon.

Verse 51 (padma.1.31.51)

evaṁ viciṁtya te sarve nāgā gatvā ca puṣkaram yajñaparvatamāsādya śailabhittimupāśritāḥ

Thinking thus, all those Nagas went to Pushkara, and reaching the sacrificial mountain, took shelter against the mountain wall.

Verse 52 (padma.1.31.52)

dṛṣṭvā nāgāṁstathā śrāntānvāridhārāśca śītalāḥ udaṅmukhā vai niṣkrāṁtāssarveṣāṁ tu sukhapradāḥ

Seeing the serpents so exhausted, cool streams of water, facing northward, flowed out, giving comfort to them all.

Verse 53 (padma.1.31.53)

nāgatīrthaṁ tato jātaṁ pṛthivyāṁ bharatarṣabha nāgakuṁḍaṁ ca vai kecitsaritaṁ cāpare'bruvan

Thence Nagatirtha arose on the earth, O bull of the Bharatas. Some call it Nagakunda, and others call it a river.

Verse 54 (padma.1.31.54)

puṇyaṁ tatsarvatīrthānāṁ sarpāṇāṁ viṣanāśanam majjanti tatra ye martyā adhiśrāvaṇa paṁcami

It is sacred among all tirthas and destroys the venom of serpents. Mortals who bathe there on the fifth day of Shravana—

Verse 55 (padma.1.31.55)

na teṣāṁ tu kule sarpāḥ pīḍāṁ kurvanti karhicit śrāddhaṁ pitṝṇāṁ ye tatra kariṣyaṁti narā bhuvi

—in their family, serpents never cause harm. Those men on earth who perform shraddha for their ancestors there—

Verse 56 (padma.1.31.56)

brahmā teṣāṁ paraṁ sthānaṁ dāsyate nātra saṁśayaḥ nāgānāṁ tu bhayaṁ jñātvā brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ

—Brahma will grant them the supreme abode, without doubt. Knowing the fear of the Nagas, Brahma, the grandsire of the worlds—

Verse 57 (padma.1.31.57)

pūrvoktaṁ tu punarvākyaṁ nāgānaśrāvayattadā paṁcamī sā tithirdhanyā sarvapāpaharā śubhā

—then made the Nagas hear again the words spoken before: that fifth tithi is blessed, auspicious, and removes all sin.

Verse 58 (padma.1.31.58)

yato'syāmeva sutithau nāgānāṁ kāryamuddhṛtam etasyāṁ sarvato yastu kaṭvamlaṁ parivarjayet

—since on this very auspicious tithi the work of the Nagas was accomplished. Whoever on this day avoids all pungent and sour food—

Verse 61 (padma.1.31.61)

—asuras, glorious, like a second Namuchi. After a great length of time, he then set out for the cities of the world-guardians.

Verse 66 (padma.1.31.66)

They came forth, their forms clearly resembling those of great fish; and horses, bound with golden cords, appeared like red fish at the water's edge.

Verse 70 (padma.1.31.70)

Verse 77 (padma.1.31.77)

Verse 84 (padma.1.31.84)

mā bhaiṣṭa devā bhadraṁ vo yāvadvadati dānavaḥ caturaṁgabalopeto rurustāvatsamāgataḥ

—said: 'Do not fear, O gods, may good come to you.' While she was still speaking, Ruru, equipped with his fourfold army, arrived there.

Verse 85 (padma.1.31.85)

tiṣṭhatiṣṭheti jalpaṁto daityāste samupāgatāḥ tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ tāsāṁ teṣāṁ mahābhayam

—those Daityas, crying 'Stand, stand!', drew near. Then a great and terrible battle broke out between the yoginis and the Daityas.

Verse 87 (padma.1.31.87)

nārācairbhinnadehānāṁ daityānāṁ bhuvi sarpatāṁ roṣāddaṁḍaprabhagnānāṁ sarpāṇāmiva sarpatām

Of the Daityas, their bodies pierced by iron arrows, writhing upon the ground like serpents broken in fury by a stick, crawling—

raṇabhūmiṁ samāsādya daityāḥ sarve ruruṁ vinā tato balaṁ hataṁ dṛṣṭvā rururmāyāṁ tadādade

Having come to the battlefield, all the Daityas except Ruru fell. Then, seeing his army slain, Ruru resorted to his power of illusion.

Verse 91 (padma.1.31.91)

The supreme goddess settled again in her own place of austerity. Then the greatly fortunate goddesses surrounded her and remained there.
