Srishti Khanda · Chapter 33
The Vision of Markandeya's Hermitage
Verse 1 (padma.1.33.1)
bhīṣma uvāca mārkaṁḍeyena vai rāmaḥ kathamatra prabodhitaḥ kathaṁ samāgamo bhūtaḥ kasminkāle kadā mune
Bhishma said: How was Rama enlightened here by Markandeya? How did their meeting occur — at what time, when, O sage?
Verse 2 (padma.1.33.2)
mārkaṁḍeyaḥ kasya sutaḥ kathaṁ jāto mahātapāḥ nāmno'sya nigamaṁ brūhi yathābhūtaṁ mahāmune
Whose son was Markandeya, and how was he born, of great austerity? Tell me the origin of his name exactly as it happened, O great sage.
Verse 3 (padma.1.33.3)
pulastya uvāca atha te saṁpravakṣyāmi mārkaṁḍeyodbhavaṁ punaḥ purākalpe muniḥ pūrvaṁ mṛkaṁḍurnāma viśrutaḥ
Pulastya said: Now I shall tell you of Markandeya's origin. In a former kalpa there was previously a renowned sage named Mrikandu.
Verse 4 (padma.1.33.4)
bhṛgoḥ putro mahābhāgaḥ sabhāryastaptavāṁstapaḥ tasya putrastadā jāto vasatastu vanāṁtare
The greatly fortunate son of Bhrigu, together with his wife, performed austerity; then a son was born to him while dwelling in the depths of the forest.
Verse 5 (padma.1.33.5)
sapaṁcavārṣiko bhūto bāla eva guṇādhikaḥ jñāninā sa tadā dṛṣṭo bhramanbālastadāṁgaṇe
When he was five years old, that child, already surpassing in virtue, was seen by a knower of wisdom, wandering as a boy in the courtyard.
Verse 6 (padma.1.33.6)
sthitvā sa suciraṁ kālaṁ bhāvyarthaṁ pratyabudhyata tasya pitrā sa vai pṛṣṭaḥ kiyadāyuḥ sutasya me
Standing there for a long while, he perceived what was to come. He was asked by the boy's father: 'What is the lifespan of my son?'
Verse 7 (padma.1.33.7)
saṁkhyāyācakṣva varṣāṇi tasyālpānyadhikāni vā mṛkaṁḍunaivamuktastu sa jñānī vākyamabravīt
'Reckon and tell me the years, whether few or many.' Thus addressed by Mrikandu, that wise one spoke these words:
Verse 8 (padma.1.33.8)
ṣaṇmāsamāyuḥ putrasya dhātrā sṛṣṭaṁ munīśvara naiva śokastvayā kāryaḥ satyametadudāhṛtam
'O lord of sages, six months is the lifespan ordained for your son by the Creator. You should not grieve; this is spoken as truth.'
Verse 9 (padma.1.33.9)
sa tacchrutvā vaco bhīṣma jñāninā yadudāhṛtam athopanayanaṁ cakre bālakasya pitā tadā
Having heard, O Bhishma, that word spoken by the knower, the father of the boy then performed his upanayana.
Verse 10 (padma.1.33.10)
āha cainaṁ pitāputramṛṣīṁstvamabhivādaya evamuktaḥ sa vai pitrā prahṛṣṭaścābhivādane
The father said to his son: 'You must salute the sages.' Thus instructed by his father, he, greatly pleased, engaged in saluting—
Verse 11 (padma.1.33.11)
na varṇā varṇatāṁ vetti sarvavarṇābhivādanaḥ paṁcamāsāstvatikrāṁtā divasāḥ paṁcaviṁśatiḥ
—did not distinguish varna from varna, saluting all varnas alike. Five months passed, and twenty-five days more.
Verse 12 (padma.1.33.12)
mārgeṇātha samāyātā ṛṣayastatra sapta vai bālena tena te dṛṣṭāḥ sarve cāpyabhivāditāḥ
Then seven sages came along that road; they were all seen by that boy, and all saluted by him.
Verse 13 (padma.1.33.13)
'May you have long life,' said they to that boy with staff and girdle. Having said this, they then looked again at the boy, and saw his life was waning.
Verse 14 (padma.1.33.14)
dināni paṁca tasyāyurjñātvā bhītāśca te nṛpa taṁ gṛhītvā bālakaṁ ca gatāste brahmaṇoṁtikam
Knowing that only five days of his life remained, O king, those sages, frightened, took the boy and went into the presence of Brahma.
Verse 15 (padma.1.33.15)
pratimucya ca taṁ rājanpraṇipetuḥ pitāmaham ayamāveditastaistu tena brahmābhivāditaḥ
Setting him down, O king, they bowed to the grandsire. He was presented by them, and by him the boy Brahma was saluted.
Verse 16 (padma.1.33.16)
cirāyurbrahmaṇā bālaḥ proktaḥ sa ṛṣisannidhau tataste munayaḥ prītāḥ śrutvā vākyaṁ pitāmahāt
The boy was told by Brahma, in the presence of the sages, 'Be long-lived.' Then those sages were pleased, having heard this word from the grandsire.
Verse 17 (padma.1.33.17)
pitāmaha ṛṣīndṛṣṭvā provāca vismayānvitaḥ kāryeṇa yena cāyātaḥ koyaṁ bālo nivedyatām
The grandsire, seeing the sages, spoke in astonishment: 'For what purpose have you come, and who is this boy? Let it be told.'
Verse 18 (padma.1.33.18)
tatasta ṛṣayo rājansarvaṁ tasmai nyavedayan putro mṛkaṁḍoḥ kṣīṇāyuḥ sāyuṣaṁ kuru bālakam
Then, O king, those sages told him everything: 'This son of Mrikandu is of waning life; grant this boy long life.'
Verse 19 (padma.1.33.19)
alpāyuṣastvasya munirbadhvemāṁ cāpi mekhalām yajñopavītaṁ daṁḍaṁ ca datvā cainamabodhayat
Since this sage-child was short-lived, having bound this girdle upon him and given him the sacred thread and staff, he had instructed him:
Verse 20 (padma.1.33.20)
yaṁ kaṁcitpaśyase bāla bhramaṁtaṁ bhūtale janam tasyābhivādaḥ kartavya evamāha pitā vacaḥ
'Whatever person you see wandering upon the earth, O child, you must salute him.' Thus his father spoke this word.
Verse 21 (padma.1.33.21)
abhivādanaśīloyaṁ kṣitau dṛṣṭaḥ paribhraman tīrthayātrāprasaṁgena daivayogātpitāmaha
'This one, given to saluting, was seen wandering on earth in the course of a pilgrimage, by the working of fate, O grandsire.'
Verse 22 (padma.1.33.22)
cirāyurbhava putreti proktosau tatra bālakaḥ kathaṁ vaco bhavetsatyamasmākaṁ bhavatā saha
'"May you have long life, my son," this boy was told there. How may your word be made true together with ours?'
Verse 23 (padma.1.33.23)
evamuktastadā taistu brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ ṛtavākyādiyaṁ bhūmiḥ saṁsthitā sarvatobhayā
Thus addressed by them, Brahma, the grandsire of the worlds, spoke; by the truth of speech this earth remains established, secure on every side.
Verse 24 (padma.1.33.24)
brahmovāca matsamaścāyuṣā bālo mārkaṁḍeyo bhaviṣyati kalpasyādau tathācāṁte mato me munisattamaḥ
Brahma said: 'This boy, equal to me in lifespan, shall become Markandeya; at the beginning of the kalpa and likewise at its end, he is deemed by me the foremost of sages.'
Verse 25 (padma.1.33.25)
evaṁ te munayo bālaṁ brahmaloke pitāmahāt saṁsādhya preṣayāmāsurbhūyopyenaṁ dharātalam
Thus those sages, having accomplished their purpose for the boy in Brahmaloka through the grandsire, sent him back again to the surface of the earth.
Verse 26 (padma.1.33.26)
tīrthayātrāṁ gatā viprā mārkaṁḍeyo nijaṁ gṛham jagāma teṣu yāteṣu pitaraṁ svamathābravīt
The brahmins went on their pilgrimage, and Markandeya went to his own home; when they had gone, he then spoke to his own father:
Verse 27 (padma.1.33.27)
brahmalokamahaṁ nīto munibhirbrahmavādibhiḥ dīrghāyuśca kṛtaścāsmi varāndatvā visarjitaḥ
'I was taken to Brahmaloka by the sages, knowers of Brahman; and I have been made long-lived, and dismissed after being given boons.'
Verse 28 (padma.1.33.28)
etadanyacca me dattaṁ gataṁ ciṁtākaraṁ tava kalpasyādau tathā cāṁte bhaviṣye samanaṁtare
'This and other things have been given to me; your anxiety is gone. At the beginning of the kalpa, and likewise at its end, I shall be present.'
Verse 29 (padma.1.33.29)
lokakarturbrahmaṇohaṁ prasādāttasya vai pitaḥ puṣkaraṁ vai gamiṣyāmi tapastaptuṁ samudyataḥ
'By the grace of Brahma, the maker of the worlds, O father, I shall now go to Pushkara, resolved to perform austerity.'

Verse 32 (padma.1.33.32)
mārkaṁḍeyavacaḥ śrutvā mṛkaṁḍurmunisattamaḥ jagāma paramaṁ harṣaṁ kṣaṇamekaṁ samucchvasan
Hearing Markandeya's words, Mrikandu, foremost of sages, attained supreme joy, sighing deeply for a moment.
Verse 33 (padma.1.33.33)

Holding firm with a joyful mind, he spoke these words: 'Today my birth is fruitful, and my life is a good life.'
Verse 34 (padma.1.33.34)

—having reached Atri's ashram, asked that foremost of sages. Rama said: 'What sacred tirthas, or what field, O great sage—'
Verse 50 (padma.1.33.50)

Hearing that word spoken by Raghava, that foremost of brahmins then, having pondered for a long while, spoke these words:
Verse 53 (padma.1.33.53)
atriruvāca sādhu pṛṣṭaṁ tvayā vīra raghūṇāṁ vaṁśavardhana mama pitrā kṛtaṁ tīrthaṁ puṣkaraṁ nāma viśrutam
