ṛṣīṇāṁ ca vasiṣṭhaṁ ca grahāṇāṁ ca prabhākaraṁ evamādīni vai datvā devadevaḥ pitāmahaḥ
—to Vasishtha, among the sages; to Prabhakara, among the planets — thus having given these gifts, the god of gods, the grandsire—
Verse 86 (padma.1.34.86)

yuṣmākaṁ māṁ puraskṛtya teṣāṁ rogabhayaṁ kutaḥ yeṣu rāṣṭreṣu yuṣmākamutsavāḥ pūjanādikāḥ
'—placing me foremost, whence shall come to them the fear of disease? In whatever kingdoms your festivals and worship and the like—'
Verse 90 (padma.1.34.90)
pravartsyaṁti kriyāḥ sarvā yatphalaṁ teṣu tacchṛṇu nādhayo vyādhayaścaiva nopasargā na kṣudbhayaṁ
'—all such rites shall continue, hear what fruit shall be theirs: no mental afflictions, nor bodily ailments, nor calamities, nor fear of famine—'
Verse 91 (padma.1.34.91)
viprayogo na cāpīṣṭairaniṣṭairnāpi saṁgatiḥ nākṣirogaḥ śirārtirvā pittaśūla bhagaṁdarāḥ
'—no separation from the beloved, nor association with the unloved. No eye-disease, nor headache, nor bilious colic, nor fistula—'
Verse 92 (padma.1.34.92)
nābhicāraṁ bhayaṁ tatrāpasmāro na viṣūcikā vṛddhirnikāmatastasminsamyagbuddhiranuttamā
'—no fear of black magic, no epilepsy, no cholera. There shall be growth according to desire, and excellent, right understanding.'
Verse 93 (padma.1.34.93)
ārogyaṁ sarvataścaiva dīrghāyuśca prajādhanaṁ nākāle bhavitā mṛtyurgāvo nālpapayomucaḥ
'There shall be health everywhere, long life, and wealth of offspring. Death shall not come untimely; cows shall not give scant milk—'

nākālaphalitā vṛkṣā notpātabhayamaṇvapi etacchrutvā tato viṣṇurbrahmāṇaṁ stotumudyataḥ
'—trees shall not fruit out of season, nor shall there be even the slightest fear of calamity.' Hearing this, Vishnu became ready to praise Brahma.
Verse 95 (padma.1.34.95)
viṣṇuruvāca namostvanaṁtāya viśuddhacetase svarūparūpāya sahasrabāhave sahasraraśmiprabhavāya vedhase viśāladehāya viśuddhakarmaṇe
Vishnu said: Salutation to you, the endless one, of purified consciousness, whose form is his own true nature, thousand-armed, source of a thousand rays, the Ordainer, of vast body, of purified deeds.
Verse 96 (padma.1.34.96)
samastaviśvārtiharāya śaṁbhave samastasūryānalatigmatejase namostu vidyāvitatāya cakriṇe samastadhīsthānakṛte sadā namaḥ
Remover of the affliction of the entire universe, Shambhu, of splendor as fierce as all suns and fires combined — salutation to you, pervading all knowledge, bearer of the discus; eternal salutation to the maker of every seat of intellect.
Verse 97 (padma.1.34.97)
anādidevācyuta śekharaprabho bhāvyudbhavadbhūtapate maheśvara mahatpate sarvapate jagatpate bhuvaspate bhuvanapate sadā namaḥ
O beginningless god, Achyuta, radiance of the crest, O lord, master of what will be, is becoming, and has been, O Maheshvara — O lord of the great, lord of all, lord of the world, lord of existence, lord of the universe — eternal salutation.
Verse 98 (padma.1.34.98)
yajñeśa nārāyaṇa jiṣṇu śaṁkara kṣitīśa viśveśvara viśvalocana śaśāṁkasūryācyutavīraviśvapravṛttamūrtemṛtamūrta avyaya
O lord of sacrifice, Narayana, Jishnu, Shankara, lord of the earth, lord of the universe, eye of the universe; embodiment of moon, sun, Achyuta, hero, source of all motion, immortal form, imperishable—
Verse 99 (padma.1.34.99)
jvaladdhutāśārci niruddhamaṁḍala pradeśanārāyaṇa viśvatomukha samastadevārtiharāmṛtāvyaya prapāhi māṁ śaraṇagataṁ tathā vibho
Of blazing sacrificial flame, of encompassed sphere, Narayana, facing every direction — remover of the affliction of all the gods, nectar, imperishable; O lord, protect me, who have come for refuge.
Verse 100 (padma.1.34.100)
vaktrāṇyanekāni vibho tavāhaṁ paśyāmi yajñasya gatiṁ purāṇam brahmāṇamīśaṁ jagatāṁ prasūtiṁ namostu tubhyaṁ prapitāmahāya
O lord, I see your many faces; I see the ancient course of sacrifice. Brahma, the Lord, the progenitor of the worlds — O great-grandsire, salutation to you.
Verse 101 (padma.1.34.101)
saṁsāracakrakramaṇairanekaiḥ kvacidbhavāndevavarādhidevaḥ tatsarvavijñānaviśuddhasatvairupāsyase kiṁ praṇamāmyahaṁ tvām
Through the many revolutions of the wheel of existence, O supreme god above the gods, you are, in various places, worshipped by those of purified being through all-encompassing knowledge — how then shall I bow to you?
Verse 102 (padma.1.34.102)
evaṁ bhavaṁtaṁ prakṛteḥ purastādyo vettyasau sarvavidāṁ variṣṭhaḥ guṇānviteṣu prasabhaṁ vivedyo viśālamūrtistviha sūkṣmarūpaḥ
Thus, whoever knows you as existing prior to primordial nature is the foremost of all the wise; forcibly to be known amid beings possessed of qualities, you, though of vast form, are here of subtle form.
Verse 103 (padma.1.34.103)
vākpāṇipādairvigatendriyopi kathaṁ bhavānvai sugatissukarmā saṁsārabaṁdhe nihiteṁdriyopi punaḥ kathaṁ devavarosi vedyaḥ
Devoid of speech, hands, and feet, beyond the senses, how are you yet of good conduct and good deeds? Though the senses are fixed in the bondage of the world, how are you, the foremost of gods, yet to be known?
Verse 104 (padma.1.34.104)
mūrttādamūrttaṁ na tu labhyate paraṁ paraṁ vapurdevaviśuddhabhāvaiḥ saṁsāravicchittikarairyajadbhiratovasīyeta caturmukha tvam
From the embodied form, the unembodied supreme form is not attained even by the purified dispositions of the gods; only through those sacrificers who sever the bonds of existence, O four-faced one, are you ascertained.
Verse 105 (padma.1.34.105)
paraṁ na jānaṁti yato vapuste devādayopyadbhutarūpadhārin vibhovatāregrataraṁ purāṇamārādhayedyatkamalāsanastham
Since even the gods do not know your supreme form, O lord of wondrous forms, in your incarnation — one should worship that most ancient form of you, seated upon the lotus-seat.
Verse 106 (padma.1.34.106)
na te tattvaṁ viśvasṛjopi yonimekāṁtato vetti viśuddhabhāvaḥ paraṁ tvahaṁ vedmi kathaṁ purāṇaṁ bhavaṁtamādyaṁ tapasā viśuddham
Though you are the creator of the universe, no one knows your origin exclusively with a purified disposition; yet how may I know you, ancient, primordial, purified through austerity?
Verse 107 (padma.1.34.107)
padmāsano vai janakaḥ prasiddha evaṁ prasiddhirhyasakṛtpurāṇāt saṁciṁtya te nātha vibhuṁ bhavaṁtaṁ jānāti naivaṁ tapasāvihīnaḥ
Renowned as the seated creator on the lotus-seat — thus this fame is repeatedly gained from the Puranas. O lord, one lacking austerity, even after contemplating you, the mighty one, in this way, never truly knows you.
Verse 108 (padma.1.34.108)
asmādṛśaiśca pravarairvibodhyaṁ tvāṁ devamūrkhāḥ svamatiṁ vibhajya praboddhumicchanti na teṣu buddhirudārakīrtiṣvapi vedahīnāḥ
It is by the best among us alone, O god, that you are to be known; fools, dividing you according to their own understanding, wish to comprehend you, but those devoid of the Vedas, even if of generous fame, have no such wisdom.
Verse 109 (padma.1.34.109)
janmāṁtarairveda vivekabuddhibhirbhavedyathā vā yadi vā prakāśaḥ tallābhalubdhasya na mānuṣatvaṁ na devagaṁdharvapatiḥ śivaḥ syāt
Through Vedic discriminative wisdom in many births, however illumination may come, one greedy only for that attainment gains neither humanity, nor the lordship of gods and Gandharvas, nor Shiva himself.
Verse 110 (padma.1.34.110)
na viṣṇurūpo bhagavānsusūkṣmaḥ sthūlosi devaḥ kṛtakṛtyatāyāḥ sthūlopi sūkṣmaḥ sulabhosi deva tvadbāhyakṛtyā narakepataṁti
The Lord in the form of Vishnu is not merely most subtle; you are gross too, O god, for the sake of accomplishment. Though gross, you, O god, subtle as well, are easily attained; but those who act toward you merely outwardly fall into hell.
Verse 111 (padma.1.34.111)
vimucyate vā bhavati sthitesmindasrenduvahnyarkamarunmahībhiḥ tatvaiḥ svarūpaiḥ samarūpadhāribhirātmasvarūpe vitata svabhāvaḥ
Through those elements — the ten senses, moon, fire, sun, wind, and earth — bearing forms identical with their own true nature, liberation comes, or continued existence, through the nature spread throughout one's own self.
Verse 112 (padma.1.34.112)
iti stutiṁ me bhagavanhyanaṁta juṣasva bhaktasya viśeṣataśca samādhiyuktasya viśuddhacetasastvadbhāvabhāvaikamanonugasya

bhavaṁti vividhāstasya yairyātrā puṣkare kṛtā idaṁ yātrāvidhānaṁ yaḥ kurute kārayeta vā
—wealth, grain, and excellent wives in various ways. Whoever performs this pilgrimage rite, or has it performed—
Verse 170 (padma.1.34.170)
śṛṇoti vā sa pāpaistu sarvaireva pramucyate agamyāgamanaṁ yena kṛtaṁ jānāti mānavaḥ
—or hears of it, is freed from all sins. The man who commits even a sin as grave as illicit union—
Verse 171 (padma.1.34.171)
brahmakriyāyā lopena bahuvarṣakṛtena ca yātrāṁ cemāṁ sakṛtkṛtvā vedasaṁskāramāpnuyāt
—or has been lacking sacred rites for many years, he too, by performing this pilgrimage even once, attains the Vedic sanctification.
Verse 172 (padma.1.34.172)
kimatra bahunoktena idamastīha śaṁkara aprāpyaṁ prāpyate tena pāpaṁ cāpi vinaśyati
O Shankara, what more need be said here — it is such that even the unattainable is attained by it, and sin too is destroyed.
Verse 173 (padma.1.34.173)
sarvayajñaphalaistulyaṁ sarvatīrthaphalapradam sarveṣāṁ caiva vedānāṁ samāptistena vai kṛtā
This is equal to the fruit of all sacrifices, and gives the fruit of all tirthas. By it, the completion of all the Vedas is also accomplished.
Verse 174 (padma.1.34.174)
yaiḥ kṛtvā puṣkare saṁdhyāṁ sāvitrī samupāsitā svapatnīhastadattena pauṣkareṇa jalena tu
Those who, having performed the twilight rite at Pushkara, worshipped Savitri — with the sacred Pushkara water given by their wife's own hand—
Verse 175 (padma.1.34.175)
bhṛṁgāreṇa vareṇaiva mṛṇmayenāpi śaṁkara ānīya tajjalaṁ puṇyaṁ saṁdhyopāstirdinakṣaye
—in an excellent vessel, or even in an earthen one, O Shankara, having brought that sacred water, the twilight worship at day's end—
Verse 176 (padma.1.34.176)
samādhinā samādheyā saprāṇāyāmapūrvikā tasyāṁ kṛtāyāṁ yatpuṇyaṁ tacchṛṇuṣva harādya me
—should be performed with meditation, preceded by pranayama. O Hara, hear from me now the merit that comes from performing that.
Verse 177 (padma.1.34.177)
tena dvādaśavarṣāṇi bhavetsaṁdhyā suvaṁditā aśvamedhaphalaṁ snāne dāne daśaguṇaṁ tathā
By it, the fruit of twelve years of twilight worship is obtained. In bathing there, the fruit of an Ashvamedha; in giving, tenfold that fruit.
Verse 178 (padma.1.34.178)
upavāsepyanaṁtaṁ ca svayaṁ proktaṁ mayānagha sāvitryāḥ purato yastu daṁpatyorbhojanaṁ dadet
O sinless one, in fasting, infinite fruit has been declared by me myself. Whoever, before Savitri, feeds a married couple—
Verse 179 (padma.1.34.179)
tenāhaṁ bhojitastatra bhavāmīha na saṁśayaḥ dvitīyaṁ bhojayedyastu bhojitastena keśavaḥ
—by him I consider myself fed there, without doubt. Whoever feeds a second couple, by him Keshava is fed—
Verse 180 (padma.1.34.180)
lakṣmīsahāyo varado varāṁstasya prayacchati umāsahāyastārtīye bhojitosi na saṁśayaḥ
—together with Lakshmi, the boon-giver, granting boons to them. In feeding a third couple, I myself, together with Uma, am considered fed, without doubt.
Verse 181 (padma.1.34.181)
athavā yā kumārīṇāṁ bhaktyā dadyācca bhojanam tasyāḥ kule bhavedvaṁdhyā na kadācicca durbhagā
Or whoever devotedly feeds young unmarried girls, in her lineage no woman ever becomes barren or unfortunate.
Verse 182 (padma.1.34.182)
na kanyā jananī kvāpi na bharturyā na vallabhā tasmātsarvaprayatnena sāvitryagre tu bhojanam
No maiden is ever deprived of motherhood, nor becomes displeasing to her husband. Therefore, O Bhishma, with full effort, feeding before Savitri—
Verse 183 (padma.1.34.183)
pāratramaihikaṁ vāpi kāmayadbhirnaraiḥ sadā dātavyaṁ sarvadā bhīṣma kaṭutailavivarjitam
—should always be performed by men desiring both this world and the next, free of pungent oil—
Verse 184 (padma.1.34.184)
na cāmlaṁ na ca vai kṣāraṁ strīṇāṁ bhojyaṁ kadācana bhakṣyaṁ paṁcaprakāraṁ ca rasaiḥ sarvaissusaṁskṛtam
—neither sour nor alkaline — women's food should never be such. The food should be of five kinds, well prepared with all the flavors—
Verse 185 (padma.1.34.185)
ghṛtapūryaḥ supakvāśca bahukṣīrasamanvitāḥ śikhariṇī tathā peyā dadhikṣīrasamanvitā
—rich puris cooked in ghee, well-cooked, laden with milk; and the drink shikharini, mixed with curd and milk—
Verse 186 (padma.1.34.186)
āhlādakāriṇī puṁsāṁ strīṇāṁ cātīva vallabhā dhanadhānyāṁ janopetaṁ nārīṇāṁ ca śatākulam
—delightful to men, most dear to women — a family endowed with wealth and grain, with hundreds of women in it—
Verse 187 (padma.1.34.187)
pūpakaṁ śaṣkulaṁ tasyāṁ jāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ na jvaro na ca saṁtāpo na duḥkhaṁ na viyogitā
—there is no doubt that she who gives fried cakes and sweets suffers no fever, no distress, no sorrow, no separation.
Verse 188 (padma.1.34.188)
asau tārayate svānāṁ kulānāmekaviṁśatiṁ baṁdhubhiśca sutaiścaiva dāsīdāsairanaṁtakaiḥ
This delivers twenty-one generations of her lineage — her family filled with kinsmen, sons, maidservants, menservants, and countless others.
Verse 189 (padma.1.34.189)
pūritaṁ ca kulaṁ tasyāḥ pūrikāṁ yā pradāsyati edhate ca ciraṁ kālaṁ putrapautrasamanvitam
She who gives puris, her lineage grows for a long time, together with sons and grandsons.
Verse 190 (padma.1.34.190)
kulaṁ ca sakalaṁ tasya śaṣkulaṁ yaḥ prayacchati putriṇyo vai duhitaro baṁdhubhiḥ sahitaṁ kulam
She who gives sweets, her whole lineage — daughters blessed with sons, the family together with its kinsmen — without doubt becomes such.
Verse 191 (padma.1.34.191)
śikhariṇīpradātrīṇāṁ yuvatīnāṁ na saṁśayaḥ modate tu kulaṁ tasyāḥ sarvasiddhiprapūritam
The lineage of young women who give shikharini rejoices, filled with every accomplishment.
Verse 192 (padma.1.34.192)
modakānāṁ pradānena evamāha prajāpatiḥ etadeva tu gaurīṇāṁ bhojanaṁ hara śasyate
The same fruit comes from giving modakas, thus said the Lord of creatures. O Hara, this same food is prescribed for Gauri too.
Verse 193 (padma.1.34.193)
subhagā putriṇī sādhvī dhanaṛddhisamanvitā sahasrabhojinī śaṁbho janmajanma bhaviṣyati
O Shambhu, that woman shall become fortunate, blessed with sons, virtuous, endowed with wealth and prosperity, one who feeds thousands, in birth after birth.
Verse 194 (padma.1.34.194)
pūpāni caiva puṇyāni kṛtāni madhurāṇi ca drākṣārasapradhānaṁ ca guḍakhaṁḍasamanvitam
Sacred and sweet cakes, chief with the juice of grapes, mixed with jaggery and sugar—
Verse 195 (padma.1.34.195)
śāradena tu dhānyena kṛtvā khaṁḍaṁ vimiśritat strīṇāṁ caiva tu peyāni bhakṣyāṇi ca dvijanmanām
—a mixture made with the grain of autumn, blended with sugar; drinks and foods fit for women and brahmins—
Verse 196 (padma.1.34.196)
iha cāvikavāsāṁsi varṣāyogyāni sarvaśaḥ yāniyāni ca peyāni tāni yogyāni dāpayet
—here, woolen garments too, suited for the rainy season, in all respects, should be given. Whatever drinks there are, they too should be duly given as gifts.
Verse 197 (padma.1.34.197)
pratipūjya vidhānena vasudānaiḥ sakaṁcukaiḥ kuṁkumenānuliptāṁgyaḥ sragdāmabhiralaṁkṛtāḥ
Having worshipped them duly, giving gifts of wealth together with a bodice, anointing their limbs with vermilion, adorning them with garlands—
Verse 198 (padma.1.34.198)
datvā tūpānahāvaṅghryornārikelaṁ kare tathā akṣṇoścaivāṁjanaṁ datvā siṁdūraṁ caiva mastake
—giving sandals for the feet, a coconut for the hand, kohl for the eyes, and vermilion for the forehead—
Verse 199 (padma.1.34.199)
guḍaṁ phalāni hṛdyāni vāṁchitāni mṛdūni ca haste datvā sapātrāṇi praṇipatya visarjayet
—giving jaggery, pleasing and desired soft fruits in the hand along with vessels, one should bow and send them off.
Verse 200 (padma.1.34.200)
svayaṁ bhuṁjīta vai paścātsabaṁdhurbālakaiḥ saha athavā naiva saṁpattistīrthe dānaṁ ca bhājanam
Then one should oneself eat, together with kinsmen and children. Or, if there is no means, giving a gift at the tirtha too is suitable.
Verse 201 (padma.1.34.201)
gṛhe gataḥ pradāsyāmi hṛṣṭo deva prasīda me evameva pitṝṇāṁ ca āgatya svīya maṁdire
'On reaching home I shall give it gladly, O god, be pleased with me.' Likewise for the ancestors too, having returned to one's own home—
Verse 202 (padma.1.34.202)
piṁḍapradānapūrvaṁ tu śrāddhaṁ kuryādvidhānataḥ pitarastasya vai tṛptā bhavaṁti brahmaṇo dinam
—shraddha should be performed, preceded by the offering of pindas, according to rite. His ancestors remain satisfied for one whole day of Brahma.
Verse 203 (padma.1.34.203)
tīrthādaṣṭaguṇaṁ puṇyaṁ svagṛhe dadatāṁ śiva na ca paśyaṁti vai nīcāḥ śrāddhaṁ dvijātibhiḥ kṛtaṁ
O Shiva, giving in one's own home yields eight times the merit of giving at a tirtha. And low-minded people do not see the shraddha performed by brahmins.
Verse 204 (padma.1.34.204)
ekāṁte tu gṛhe gupte pitṝṇāṁ śrāddhamiṣyate nīcadṛṣṭyā hataṁ tacca pitṝnnaivopatiṣṭhati
The shraddha for ancestors is desired in a secluded, private home alone. Struck by a low-minded gaze, it does not reach the ancestors.
Verse 205 (padma.1.34.205)
tasmātsarvaprayatnena śrāddhaṁ guptaṁ ca kārayet pitṝṇāṁ tṛptidaṁ proktaṁ svayameva svayaṁbhuvā
Therefore, with full effort, the shraddha should be performed in secret. Self-born Brahma himself has declared this to give satisfaction to the ancestors.
Verse 206 (padma.1.34.206)
gaurībhaktyādhikā yā tu śastā jñātakriyā tu sā rājasī manasā jñātā janānāṁ kīrtidāyinī
Whatever devotion to Gauri is greater is called praised and known action. Action known through the mind, though of a passionate nature, bestows fame upon people.
Verse 207 (padma.1.34.207)
guptaṁ dānaṁ sadā deyamātmano hitamicchatā pakvānnaṁ dṛśyatāmeti dīyamānaṁ janairbhuvi
One desiring his own welfare should always give in secret. Cooked food, given for show among people, becomes visible—
Verse 208 (padma.1.34.208)
dṛśyamānaṁ tu tattuṣṭyai dṛśyate neha karhicit ekasminbhojite vipre koṭirbhavati bhojitā
—being seen serves only their own satisfaction, but this should never be sought after here. In feeding one brahmin, a crore are considered fed—
Verse 209 (padma.1.34.209)
bhavane nātra saṁdehaḥ satyaṁ paurāṇikaṁ vacaḥ tīrthe tu brāhmaṇaṁ naiva parīkṣeta kathaṁcana
—at home, without doubt; this is a true Pauranic saying. But at a tirtha, one should never test a brahmin.
Verse 210 (padma.1.34.210)
annārthinamanuprāptaṁ bhojyaṁ taṁ manurabravīt saktubhiḥ piṁḍadānaṁ ca saṁyāvaiḥ pāyasena vā
Whoever comes there desiring food should be fed, thus said Manu. With sattu, pinda-offerings, sanyava-cakes, or rice-pudding—
Verse 211 (padma.1.34.211)
karttavyamṛṣibhirdṛṣṭaṁ piṇyākenaiṁgudena vā tilapiṇyākakairdeyaṁ bhaktimadbhirnaraiḥ sadā
—by the rite seen by the sages, with sesame-cake or ingudi, this should be done. Devoted men should always give sesame-cake as a gift.
Verse 212 (padma.1.34.212)
śrāddhaṁ tatra tu kartavyamarghyāvāhanavarjitam svadhāṁ tu gṛdhrāḥ kākā vā naiva dṛṣṭyā haranti te
There, shraddha should be performed without the offering of arghya and invocation. Not even vultures or crows, having seen that offering, can snatch it away—
Verse 213 (padma.1.34.213)
śrāddhaṁ tattairthikaṁ proktaṁ pitṝṇāṁ tṛptidaṁ param kartavyaṁ tatprayatnena bhaktirevātra kāraṇam
—this is called the tirtha-shraddha, giving supreme satisfaction to the ancestors. It should be performed with full effort; devotion alone is the cause here.
Verse 214 (padma.1.34.214)
bhaktyā tuṣyanti pitarastuṣṭāḥ kāmāndiśanti te putraṁ pautraṁ dhanaṁ dhānyaṁ kāmānyānmanasecchati
Through devotion the ancestors are satisfied; satisfied, they grant desires — sons, grandsons, wealth, grain, whatever the mind wishes.
Verse 215 (padma.1.34.215)
bhaktyā cārādhito dadyānnṛṇāṁ prītaḥ pitāmahaḥ akālepyatha kāle vā tīrthe śrāddhaṁ sadā naraiḥ
Worshipped with devotion, the pleased grandsire gives to men. Whether untimely or timely, shraddha at a tirtha should always be performed by men—
Verse 216 (padma.1.34.216)
prāptaireva sadā snānaṁ kartavyaṁ pitṛtarpaṇam piṁḍadānaṁ ca kartavyaṁ pitṝṇāṁ cātivallabham
—as soon as it is reached, bathing and satisfaction of the ancestors should be done. Pinda-offering too should be performed, which is exceedingly dear to the ancestors.
Verse 217 (padma.1.34.217)
pitaro hi nirīkṣante gotrajaṁ samupāgatam āśayā parayā yuktāḥ kāṁkṣaṁtassalilaṁ ca te
The ancestors watch for the arrival of their kinsman; filled with supreme hope, they long for water.
Verse 218 (padma.1.34.218)
vilambo naiva kartavyo naiva vighnaṁ samācaret acchinnā santatisteṣāṁ sadā kālaṁ bhaviṣyati
One should not delay, nor allow any obstruction. Their lineage will never be cut off, forever.
Verse 219 (padma.1.34.219)
The ancestors are givers of sons, desiring increase and shraddha offerings. Therefore they never bring about the severance of their descendants.
Verse 220 (padma.1.34.220)
ataḥ śrāddhaṁ purā proktaṁ svayameva svayaṁbhuvā guṇottaraṁtuyatkāryaṁdvijaiḥpitṛparāyaṇaiḥ
Therefore Svayambhuva himself first declared the shraddha. What greater rite the ancestor-devoted brahmins should perform—
Verse 221 (padma.1.34.221)
tīrthe kṣetre gṛhe vāpi saṁkrāṁtau grahaṇepi vā viṣuve ayane cāpi janmarkṣe ca prapīḍite
—at a tirtha, in a sacred field, at home, at the solstice-transition, during an eclipse too, at the equinox, at the solstice too, and when one's birth-star is afflicted—
Verse 222 (padma.1.34.222)
etānvai śrāddhakālāṁstu purā svāyaṁbhuvobravīt kṛte śrāddhe na vai puṁsāṁ pīḍā bhavati dehajā
—all these were declared as times for shraddha by Svayambhuva of old. When shraddha is performed, no bodily affliction comes to men.
Verse 223 (padma.1.34.223)
tadā putrakṛtaṁ vāpi sarvaṁ tyajati duṣkṛtam yathā na bhavitā pīḍā grahacoranṛpādikāt
Then, that shraddha performed by the son casts off all sin, so that there is no affliction from planets, thieves, kings, and the like.
Verse 224 (padma.1.34.224)
duṣkṛtaṁ naśyate sarvaṁ paratra ca gatiṁ śubhām labhate nātra sandehaḥ prajāpativaco yathā
All evil deeds are destroyed, and an auspicious course is attained in the world beyond — there is no doubt of this, such is the word of the Lord of creatures.
Verse 225 (padma.1.34.225)
kṛte yuge puṣkarāṇi tretāyāṁ naimiṣaṁ smṛtam dvāpare ca kurukṣetraṁ kalau gaṁgāṁ samāśrayet
In the Satya age, Pushkara is best; in Treta, Naimisha is remembered. In Dvapara, Kurukshetra; and in Kali, one should take refuge in the Ganga.
Verse 226 (padma.1.34.226)
duṣkaraḥ puṣkare vāso duṣkaraṁ puṣkare tapaḥ yadanyatra kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ tīrthe tadyāti lāghavam
Dwelling at Pushkara is difficult; austerity at Pushkara too is difficult. Whatever sin has been committed elsewhere, at this tirtha it becomes light.
Verse 227 (padma.1.34.227)

paścātparīkṣitānśiṣyānbaddhanetrānpraveśayet dagdhvāgneyyā dhāraṇayā vāyunā vidhunettataḥ
—he should then admit the tested disciples, their eyes bound. Having burned them through the fire-meditation, shaken through the air-meditation—
Verse 287 (padma.1.34.287)
somenāpyāyitānkṛtvā śrāvayetsamayāṁstataḥ na niṁdyādbrāhmaṇāndevānviṣṇuṁ brahmāṇameva ca
—having satisfied them through the moon-meditation, he should then recount to them the vows: do not revile brahmins, gods, Vishnu, and Brahma—
Verse 288 (padma.1.34.288)
iṁdramādityamagniṁ ca lokapālāngrahāṁstathā guruṁ ca brāhmaṇaṁ vāpi munīṁdraṁ pūrvadīkṣitam
—nor Indra, the sun, fire, the world-guardians and planets, nor the guru or a brahmin, nor even a formerly initiated lord of sages.
Verse 289 (padma.1.34.289)
evaṁ tu samayānśrāvya paścāddhomaṁ tu kārayet ū~ namo bhagavate brahmaṇe sarvarūpiṇe huṁphaṭsvāhā
Having thus recounted the vows, he should then perform the fire-offering: 'Om, salutation to venerable Brahma, of all forms, hum phat svaha.'
Verse 290 (padma.1.34.290)
ṣoḍaśākṣaramaṁtreṇa homayejjvalitenale garbhādhānādikāḥ sarvā āhutīssaṁpradāpayet
With this sixteen-syllable mantra, offerings should be made into the kindled fire. All the oblations pertaining to the rites beginning with garbhadhana should be offered.
Verse 291 (padma.1.34.291)
tisṛbhistu vyāhṛtibhirdevadevasya sannidhau homāṁte dīkṣitaḥ paścāddāpayedgurudakṣiṇām
In the presence of the god of gods, with the three vyahritis. At the end of the fire-offering, the initiated disciple should be made to give the guru-fee.
Verse 292 (padma.1.34.292)
hastyaśvayānaśakaṭahemadhānyādikaṁ nṛpa dāpayedgurave prājño madhyame madhyamaṁ tathā
O king, an elephant, horse, vehicle, cart, gold, grain, and the like. The discerning disciple should give the excellent to an excellent guru, the middling to a middling guru—
Verse 293 (padma.1.34.293)
dāpayedapare yugmaṁ sahiraṇyaṁ tu tadguroḥ evaṁ kṛte tu yatpuṇyaṁ mahatsaṁjāyate tathā
—and others should give a pair together with gold to the guru. The great merit that arises from doing this—
Verse 294 (padma.1.34.294)
tanna śakyaṁ nigaditumapi varṣaśatairapi dīkṣitotha purā bhūtvā pādmaṁ vai śṛṇuyādyadi
—cannot be told even in a hundred years. If one, having been initiated before, hears the Padma Purana—
Verse 295 (padma.1.34.295)
tena vedāḥ purāṇāni sarvamaṁtrāssasaṁgrahāḥ japtāssyuḥ puṣkare tīrthe prayāge siṁdhusāgare
—then by it, the Vedas, the Puranas, and all mantras together with their collections, at Pushkara, at Prayaga, at the meeting of Sindhu and sea—
Verse 296 (padma.1.34.296)
devahrade kurukṣetre vārāṇasyāṁ viśeṣataḥ grahaṇe viṣuve caiva yatphalaṁ japatāṁ bhavet
—at Devahrada, at Kurukshetra, at Varanasi especially, when recited, whatever fruit is obtained—
Verse 297 (padma.1.34.297)
phalaṁ śataguṇaṁ tacca puṣkarasthaṁ pitāmaham dṛṣṭvā prāpnoti vividhānkāmānkāmayate yadi
—during an eclipse, during the equinox, whatever fruit comes to those who recite the mantra — a hundred times that fruit is obtained by the sight of the grandsire established at Pushkara, if one desires his wished-for aims.
Verse 298 (padma.1.34.298)
pūjāṁ vaidhānikīṁ kṛtvā dīkṣito yaḥ śṛṇoti ca devā api tapaḥ kṛtvā dhyāyaṁti ca vadanti ca
Whoever, being initiated, having performed the prescribed worship, hears this — even the gods, having performed austerity, meditate upon this and say—
Verse 299 (padma.1.34.299)
kadā me bhārate varṣe janma syāditi pārthiva dīkṣitāśca bhaviṣyāmaḥ pādmaṁ śroṣyāmahe kadā
—'O king, when shall we be born in Bharatavarsha? When shall we become initiated? When shall we hear the Padma Purana?'
Verse 300 (padma.1.34.300)
pādmaṁ tu ṣoḍaśātmānaṁ nyasya dehe kadā vayam yāsyāmastu paraṁ sthānaṁ yadgatvā na punarbhavet
—'When shall we place the sixteen limbs of the Padma Purana in our own bodies? When shall we go to that supreme place, going to which there is no rebirth?'
Verse 301 (padma.1.34.301)
evaṁ jalpaṁti vibudhā manasā ciṁtayaṁti ca brahmayajñaṁ ca kārtikyāṁ kadā drakṣyāmahe nṛpa
Thus the gods converse and ponder in their minds. O king, 'When shall we see the Brahma-sacrifice on the Kartika full moon?'
Verse 302 (padma.1.34.302)
evaṁ te vidhiruddiṣṭo mayāyaṁ kurusattama devagaṁdharvayakṣāṇāṁ sarvadā durlabho hyasau
O best of the Kurus, thus this rite has been declared to you by me — which is always rare even for gods, Gandharvas, and Yakshas.
Verse 303 (padma.1.34.303)
evaṁ yo vetti tattvena yaśca paśyati maṁḍalam yaścemaṁ śṛṇuyāccaiva sarve muktā iti śrutiḥ
Whoever knows this in truth, and whoever sees the mandala, and whoever hears this — all these are liberated, thus says the scripture.
Verse 304 (padma.1.34.304)
ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi rahasyamidamuttamam yena lakṣmīrdhṛtistuṣṭiḥ puṣṭiścāpi bhavennṛṇām
Now beyond this I shall declare this excellent secret, by which men obtain fortune, fortitude, contentment, and prosperity.
Verse 305 (padma.1.34.305)
sarve grahāssadā saumyā jāyaṁte yena pārthiva ādityavāraṁ hastena pūrvamādāya bhaktitaḥ
O king, by which all the planets always become benign. Taking it in hand devotedly, first on Sunday—
Verse 306 (padma.1.34.306)
bhaktaikena kṣipettāvadyāvatsapta ca saṁkhyayā tatastu saptame pūrṇe kuryādbrāhmaṇabhojanam
—devotedly, until the number reaches seven. Then, when the seventh is complete, he should feed brahmins.
Verse 307 (padma.1.34.307)
ādityaṁ caiva sauvarṇaṁ kṛtvā yatnena mānavaḥ raktavastrayugacchannaṁ chatrikāṁ pāduke tathā
Having carefully made a golden image of the sun, wrapped in a pair of red garments, with an umbrella, both wooden sandals—
Verse 308 (padma.1.34.308)
upānahau ca dātavye sthāpayettāmrabhājane ghṛtena snapanaṁ kṛtvā saṁpūrṇāṁga dvijātaye
—and shoes too given, placed in a copper vessel, having bathed it with ghee, with all its parts complete, to a brahmin—
Verse 309 (padma.1.34.309)
dāpayetkṛtyaviduṣe brāhmaṇāya viśeṣataḥ evaṁ kṛtau phalaṁ tasya bhavedārogyamuttamam
—especially skilled in ritual knowledge, it should be given as a gift. Thus done, the fruit is supreme health—
Verse 310 (padma.1.34.310)
dravyasaṁpatsamagrāptiriti paurāṇikī kriyā avisaṁvādinī ceyaṁ śāṁti puṣṭipradā nṛṇām
—and the full attainment of wealth and prosperity, thus this is a Pauranic rite. This is unfailing, giving peace and prosperity to men.
Verse 311 (padma.1.34.311)
tadvaccitrāsu saṁgṛhya somavāraṁ vicakṣaṇaḥ rātribhakṣaḥ kṣipedaṣṭau somavārānprayatnataḥ
In the same way, the discerning one, having gathered on a Monday during the Chitra nakshatra, eating only a night meal, should carefully throw it for eight Mondays.
Verse 312 (padma.1.34.312)
pratyekaṁ brāhmaṇā bhojyā yathāśakti vicakṣaṇāḥ navame tu tataḥ pūrṇe kuryādbrāhmaṇabhojanam
Each time, the discerning should feed brahmins according to their ability. Then, when the ninth is complete, brahmin-feeding should be done—
Verse 313 (padma.1.34.313)
vastrayugmaṁ ca dātavyaṁ tataḥ somaṁ pradāpayet kāṁsyabhājanasaṁsthaṁ tu kṣīrasaṁpūritaṁ tataḥ
—and a pair of garments should be given, then the moon-image should be given — placed in a bronze vessel, filled with milk—
Verse 314 (padma.1.34.314)
tadvacchatraṁ pāduke ca tathopānatsamanvitam saṁpūrṇāṁgāya dātavyaṁ brāhmaṇāya viśeṣataḥ
—likewise an umbrella, both wooden sandals, and shoes, the complete image should especially be given to a brahmin.
Verse 315 (padma.1.34.315)
svātyāmaṁgārakaṁ pūjya kṣapayennaktabhojanaiḥ aṣṭāvevaṁ ca yāvacca kuryādbrāhmaṇabhojanam
Having worshipped Mars during the Svati nakshatra, one should deplete it eight times through night-only meals — thus, having done it eight times, brahmin-feeding should follow.
Verse 316 (padma.1.34.316)
aṁgārakaṁ ca sauvarṇaṁ sthāpitaṁ tāmrabhājane dāpayedbrāhmaṇāyātha saṁpūrṇāṁgāya caiva hi
The golden image of Mars, placed in a copper vessel, should be given, with its parts complete, to a brahmin alone.
Verse 317 (padma.1.34.317)
nakṣatrānukrameṇaiva kṣipennaktāni sapta vai aṣṭame tu kramātkheṭānsauvarṇāndāpayedbudhaḥ
In the order of the nakshatras, one should throw it for seven nights, taking only a night meal. On the eighth day, in order, golden images of the planets should be given to a learned one.
Verse 318 (padma.1.34.318)
agnikāryaṁ ca kurvīta yathādṛṣṭaṁ vidhānataḥ evaṁ kṛte bhavedyadvai tannibodha narādhipa
The fire-rite too should be performed according to the observed rule. O king, hear what results from doing this.
Verse 319 (padma.1.34.319)
asaumyāśca grahāssarve saumyarūpā bhavaṁti ca sarve rogā vinaśyanti tuṣṭimāyānti devatāḥ
All the malefic planets become benign in form. All diseases are destroyed, and the deities become satisfied.
Verse 320 (padma.1.34.320)
na virundhanti taṁ nāgāḥ pitarastarpitāstathā dussvapnanāśo bhavati śṛṇvatāṁ paṭhatāṁ tathā
Serpents do not obstruct him, and the ancestors are satisfied. The bad dreams of those who hear and those who recite this are destroyed.
Verse 321 (padma.1.34.321)
yadi bhaumo ravisuto bhāskaro rāhuṇā saha ketuśca mūrdhni tiṣṭhaṁti raudrāḥ pīḍākarā grahāḥ
If Mars, Saturn the son of the sun, Rahu, the sun, and Ketu — these fierce, affliction-bringing planets stand upon one's head—
Verse 322 (padma.1.34.322)
anena kṛtamātreṇa sasaubhāgyā bhavaṁti hi ya evaṁ kurute rājansadābhaktisamanvitaḥ
—by merely doing this, they become fortunate. O king, whoever, ever endowed with devotion, does this—
Verse 323 (padma.1.34.323)
tasya sānugrahāḥ sarve śāṁtiṁ yacchaṁti nānyathā śanaiścaraṁ rāhuketū lohapātreṣu vinyaset
—toward him all the planets, being gracious, give peace alone, not otherwise. Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu should be placed in iron vessels—
Verse 324 (padma.1.34.324)
lohena kārayeccainānbrāhmaṇebhyaśca dāpayet kṛṣṇaṁ vastrayugaṁ deyameteṣāṁ prīṇanāya vai
—and their images should be made of iron and given to brahmins. To please them, a pair of black garments should be given.
Verse 325 (padma.1.34.325)
sauvarṇāṁ gāśca dātavyāḥ śāṁtiśrīvijayepsubhiḥ vratāṁte sarva ete hi grahāssauvarṇakā nṛpa
Those who desire peace, prosperity, and victory should give golden cows. O king, at the end of the vow, all these planets, made of gold—
Verse 326 (padma.1.34.326)
dātavyāḥ śāṁtimicchadbhirvratāṁte dvijabhojanam yathāśakti dakṣiṇā ca grahāṇāṁ prītaye tathā
—those desiring peace should perform brahmin-feeding at the end of the vow, giving a fee according to ability — all this for the pleasure of the planets.
Verse 327 (padma.1.34.327)
alpāyāsena rājeṁdra sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt śaṁkarājjñānamanvicchedārogyaṁ bhāskarāttathā
O king of kings, by this, with little effort, all desires are attained. One should seek knowledge from Shankara, health from the sun—
Verse 328 (padma.1.34.328)
hutāśanāddhanamicchedgatimicchejjanārdanāt brāhmyaṁ pitāmahāccaiva sarvajantupraśāṁtidam
—wealth from Agni, the goal from Janardana. From the grandsire, the Brahmic state, which brings peace to all beings.
Verse 329 (padma.1.34.329)
bhīṣma uvāca yastvayā kathito yajño yajvanāṁ tu phalaṁ mahat tathāyuṣassvalpatayā anyaiḥ prāptuṁ na śakyate
Bhishma said: The sacrifice you have described gives great fruit to those who perform it; but due to the shortness of lifespan, it cannot be attained by others.
Verse 330 (padma.1.34.330)
svalyāyāsena yatpuṇyaṁ saṁvatsaramupoṣajam bhavettanme muniśreṣṭha kathayasva mahāphalam
That which, with little effort, has merit equal to a year of fasting, O foremost of sages, tell me — that which gives great fruit.
Verse 331 (padma.1.34.331)
pulastya uvāca idamarthaṁ mahārāja śveto rājā mahāyaśāḥ vasiṣṭhaṁ pṛṣṭavānpraśnaṁ kṣudhayā pīḍito bhṛśam
Pulastya said: Regarding this very matter, O great king, the highly renowned king Shweta, greatly afflicted by hunger, once asked a question of Vasishtha.
Verse 332 (padma.1.34.332)
āsīdilāvṛte varṣe śveto rājā mahābalaḥ sa mahīṁ sakalāṁ jigye saptadvīpāṁ sapattanām
In the Ilavrita realm there lived a mighty king named Shweta. He had conquered the entire earth, with its seven continents and its cities.
Verse 333 (padma.1.34.333)
brahmaputro vasiṣṭhaśca āsīttasya purohitaḥ sa kadācinnṛpaśreṣṭho jitvā paramadhārmikaḥ
Vasishtha, son of Brahma, was his priest. Once that supremely righteous, foremost king, having gained victory—
Verse 334 (padma.1.34.334)
purohitamuvācedaṁ vasiṣṭhaṁ japatāṁ varam śveta uvāca bhagavannaśvamedhānāṁ sahasraṁ kartumutsahe
—spoke to Vasishtha, foremost among those who recite mantras. Shweta said: 'O venerable one, I am able to perform a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices—'
Verse 335 (padma.1.34.335)
suvarṇarūpyaratnānāṁ dānaṁ kartuṁ dvijātiṣu pṛthivyāmannadānaṁ tu dātunnecchāmi vai guro
'—I am able to give gifts of gold, silver, and gems to brahmins; but, O teacher, I do not wish to give food to the earth.'
Verse 336 (padma.1.34.336)
nānnena kiṁciddattena datte homni dvije prabho na kiṁcidvastviti jñātvā na dattaṁ tatkadācana
'O lord, what use is it, without giving any food, only offering oblations to a brahmin in sacrifice?' — thinking nothing was worth giving, he never gave it.
Verse 337 (padma.1.34.337)
King Shweta, of great renown, gave to brahmins red garments, ornaments, villages, and cities.
Verse 338 (padma.1.34.338)
nānnaṁ jalaṁ tena rājñā dattamāsītkadācana tato'śvamedhairbahubhiryajvāsau nṛpasattama
But that king never gave food or water as a gift. Thereafter, that foremost king, sacrificer of many Ashvamedhas—
Verse 339 (padma.1.34.339)
svargaṁ gataḥ puṇyajitaṁ tapastaptvārbudatrayam brāhmīṁ salokatāṁ prāptaḥ sarvālaṁkārabhūṣitaḥ
—attained heaven, conquered by his merit, and, having performed austerity for three arbudas of years, attained residence in the Brahma-world, adorned with every ornament.
Verse 340 (padma.1.34.340)
nṛtyaṁtyapsarasastatra gāyaṁte siddhayoṣitaḥ tuṁbururnāradastatra dvāvapyanugatau sadā
There Apsarases dance, and Siddha-women sing. There Tumburu and Narada, both, were his constant companions.
Verse 341 (padma.1.34.341)
agāyetāṁ mahāprājñau munayaśca taponvitāḥ vedoktamaṁtraiḥ stuvanti anekakratuyājinam
Those two great sages, and the ascetic sages, would sing in praise of the performer of many sacrifices, with Vedic mantras.
Verse 342 (padma.1.34.342)

evaṁ vibhavayuktasya rājñastasya mahātmanaḥ kṣudhāyā pīḍyate dehaṁ tṛṣṇayā ca viśeṣataḥ
Thus, though endowed with such splendor, that great-souled king's body began to be afflicted by hunger and, especially, by thirst.
Verse 343 (padma.1.34.343)

śālāgnihotriṇaṁ kṛtvā surūpaṁ ca guṇānvitam sapatnīkaṁ ca saṁpūjya bhūṣayitvā ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ
Having worshipped a priest who maintains the sacred fire, of good form and virtue, together with his wife, having adorned him with ornaments—
Verse 402 (padma.1.34.402)
purohitaṁ mukhyatamaṁ kṛtvā'nye ca tathā dvijāḥ caturviṁśadguṇopetāḥ sapatnīkā nimaṁtritāḥ
—the chief priest, and also the other brahmins, endowed with twenty-four virtues, invited together with their wives—
Verse 403 (padma.1.34.403)
aṁgulīyāni ca tathā karṇaveṣṭaṁ ca dāpayet evaṁvidhāṁstu tānpūjya teṣāmagre susaṁsthitaḥ
—rings and ear-ornaments too should be given. Having thus worshipped them, standing well before them—
Verse 404 (padma.1.34.404)
aṣṭāṁgapraṇipātena praṇamya ca punaḥpunaḥ purohitāya purataḥ kṛtvā vai karasaṁpuṭam
—having bowed repeatedly with an eight-limbed prostration, with both hands joined before the priest—
Verse 405 (padma.1.34.405)
yūyaṁ vai brāhmaṇāḥ prītā maitratvenānugṛhṇata saumukhyena dvijaśreṣṭhā bhūyaḥ pūtatarastvahaḥ
'O pleased brahmins, favor me with friendship. O foremost of brahmins, with kind faces, make me more purified still.'
Verse 406 (padma.1.34.406)
bhavatāṁ prītiyogena svayaṁ prītaḥ pitāmahaḥ brahmāṁḍena tu dattena toṣaṁ yātu janārdanaḥ
'By your loving pleasure, may the grandsire himself be pleased. May Janardana attain satisfaction through the giving of this cosmic egg.'
Verse 407 (padma.1.34.407)
pinākapāṇirbhagavānśakraśca tridaśeśvaraḥ ete toṣaṁ samāyāṁtu anudhyānāddvijottamāḥ
'The venerable trident-bearer, and Indra, lord of the thirty gods — O foremost brahmins, through your meditation, may all these attain satisfaction.'
Verse 408 (padma.1.34.408)
evaṁ stutvā tato rājā brāhmaṇānvedapāragān brahmāṇḍaṁ tu guroḥ prādātsavidhānaṁ punaḥ kṣaṇāt
Thus having praised the Veda-versed brahmins, that king again, in that very instant, offered the cosmic egg to his guru according to rite.
Verse 409 (padma.1.34.409)
sarvakāmaistatastṛpto yayau svargaṁ narādhipaḥ tenaiva guruṇā tacca vibhaktaṁ brāhmaṇaiḥ saha
Thereafter, satisfied in all his desires, that king went to heaven. By that same guru, that cosmic egg was distributed together with the brahmins.
Verse 410 (padma.1.34.410)
dattaṁ tenāpi cānyebhyo brahmāṁḍaṁ ca narādhipa brahmāṁḍe bhūmidāne ca grāhī caiko na vai bhavet
O king, by him too it was given to others. In the gift of the cosmic egg and of land, there should never be a single sole recipient.
Verse 411 (padma.1.34.411)
gṛhṇandoṣamavāpnoti brahmahatyāṁ na saṁśayaḥ sarveṣāṁ caiva pratyakṣaṁ dātavyaṁ parikīrtya vai
One who accepts it alone incurs a fault — that of killing a brahmin, without doubt. It is declared that this gift should be given only in the presence of all.
Verse 412 (padma.1.34.412)
Those who see it being given also become purified. By the mere sight of it, they become liberated, without doubt.
Verse 413 (padma.1.34.413)
yā bhīmadvādaśī proktā svarṇaṁ toyaṁ mṛgājinaṁ etāni kṛtvā paśyantu dṛṣṭairetaiḥ kriyāphalaṁ
On what is called the Bhima Dvadashi, gold, water, and deerskin — those who merely see these, having had them made, obtain the fruit of these deeds.
Verse 414 (padma.1.34.414)
ayatnādeva labhyeta kartuścaiva salokatā sadā gāvaḥ praṇamyāśca maṁtreṇānena pārthiva
Without effort, the doer attains a world equal to the gods. Cows should always be saluted with this mantra—
Verse 415 (padma.1.34.415)
namo gobhyaḥ śrīmatībhyaḥ saurabheyībhya eva ca namo brahmasutābhyaśca pavitrābhyo namonamaḥ
'Salutation to the glorious cows, the daughters of Surabhi. Salutation, salutation again to the daughters of Brahma, the pure ones.'
Verse 416 (padma.1.34.416)
maṁtrasya cāsya smaraṇādgodānaphalamāpnuyāt tasmāttvamapi rājeṁdra puṣkare tīrtha uttame
By the mere remembrance of this mantra, the fruit of a cow-gift is obtained. Therefore, O king of kings, you too, at the excellent tirtha of Pushkara—
Verse 417 (padma.1.34.417)
kārtikyāṁ tu viśeṣeṇa godānaphalamāpsyasi yatkiṁcidvidyate pāpaṁ striyo vā puruṣasya vā
—especially in the month of Kartika, shall obtain the fruit of a cow-gift. Whatever sin exists in a woman or a man—
Verse 418 (padma.1.34.418)
puṣkare snānamātreṇa tadaśeṣaṁ praṇaśyati pṛthivyāṁ yāni tīrthāni āsamudrāttu bhārata
—it is all destroyed root and branch merely by bathing at Pushkara. O descendant of Bharata, whatever tirthas exist on earth as far as the ocean—
Verse 419 (padma.1.34.419)
puṣkare tānyupāyāṁti kārtikyāṁ tu viśeṣataḥ
—all of them come together at Pushkara, especially during the month of Kartika.
