Chapter 36All chaptersChapter 38

Verse 1 (padma.1.37.1)

pulastya uvāca tadadbhutatamaṁ vākyaṁ śrutvā ca raghunaṁdanaḥ gauravādvismayāccāpi bhūyaḥ praṣṭuṁ pracakrame

Pulastya said: Having heard that most wondrous statement, Raghunandana, out of respect and astonishment, began to ask further.

Verse 2 (padma.1.37.2)

rāma uvāca bhagavaṁstadvanaṁ ghoraṁ yatrāsau taptavāṁstapaḥ śveto vaidarbhako rājā tadadbhutamabhūtkathaṁ

Rama said: Venerable one, that terrible forest where King Shveta of Vidarbha performed austerities — how did that wonder come about?

Verse 3 (padma.1.37.3)

viṣamaṁ tadvanaṁ rājā śūnyaṁ mṛgavivarjitaṁ praviṣṭastapa āsthātuṁ kathaṁ vada mahāmune

That harsh forest, empty, devoid of wild creatures — how did the king enter it to take up austerities? Tell me, great sage.

Verse 4 (padma.1.37.4)

samaṁtādyojanaśataṁ nirmanuṣyamabhūtkathaṁ bhavānkathaṁ praviṣṭastadyena kāryeṇa tadvada

How did it become empty of humans for a hundred yojanas all around? How did you yourself enter it, and for what purpose — tell me that.

Verse 5 (padma.1.37.5)

agastya uvāca purā kṛtayuge rājā manurdaṁḍadharaḥ prabhuḥ tasya putrotha nāmnāsīdikṣvākuramitadyutiḥ

Agastya said: Long ago, in the Krita Yuga, there was a mighty king, Manu, wielder of the rod. His son was named Ikshvaku, of measureless splendor.

Verse 6 (padma.1.37.6)

taṁ putraṁ pūrvajaṁ rājye nikṣipya bhuvisaṁmatam pṛthivyāṁ rājavaṁśānāṁ bhava rājetyuvāca ha

Having installed that firstborn son, honored on earth, in the kingdom, he said: 'Become king among the royal lineages of the earth.'

Verse 7 (padma.1.37.7)

tatheti ca pratijñātaṁ pituḥ putreṇa rāghava tataḥparamasaṁhṛṣṭaḥ punastaṁ pratyabhāṣata

'So be it,' the son promised his father, O Raghava. Then, greatly delighted, Manu spoke to him again.

Verse 8 (padma.1.37.8)

'I am pleased, most noble one, by your conduct, without doubt. Protect the subjects with the rod of justice, but never punish without cause.'

Verse 9 (padma.1.37.9)

aparādhiṣu yo daṁḍaḥ pātyate mānavairiha sa daṁḍo vidhivanmuktaḥ svargaṁ nayati pārthivam

'The punishment duly inflicted by men here upon offenders — that punishment, rightly administered, leads the king to heaven.'

Verse 10 (padma.1.37.10)

tasmāddaṇḍe mahābāho yatnavānbhava putraka dharmaste paramo loke kṛta evaṁ bhaviṣyati

'Therefore, O mighty-armed one, be diligent in administering punishment, my son. Thus will your highest dharma in this world be fulfilled.'

Verse 11 (padma.1.37.11)

iti taṁ bahusaṁdiśya manuḥ putraṁ samādhinā jagāma tridivaṁ hṛṣṭo brahmalokamanuttamam

Having thus instructed his son at length, Manu, through meditation, joyfully went to the triple heaven, the unsurpassed world of Brahma.

Verse 12 (padma.1.37.12)

janayiṣye kathaṁ putrāniti ciṁtāparo'bhavat karmabhirbahubhistaistaissasutaissaṁyuto'bhavat

'How shall I beget sons?' — Ikshvaku fell into this anxiety. Through many rites he became blessed with sons.

Verse 13 (padma.1.37.13)

toṣayāmāsa putraissa pitṝndevasutopamaiḥ sarveṣāmuttamasteṣāṁ kanīyānraghunaṁdana

He gratified the ancestors with sons who were like the sons of gods, O Raghunandana; the youngest of them was the best of all.

Verse 14 (padma.1.37.14)

śūraśca kṛtavidyaśca guruśca janapūjayā nāma tasyātha daṁḍeti pitā cakre sa buddhimān

He was valiant, learned, and revered by the people; his wise father gave him the name Danda.

Verse 15 (padma.1.37.15)

bhaviṣyaddaṇḍapatanaṁ śarīre tasya vīkṣya ca saṁpaśyamānastaṁ doṣaṁ ghoraṁ putrasya rāghava

Seeing on his body the marks foretelling his future downfall, and perceiving that terrible flaw in his son, O Raghava —

Verse 16 (padma.1.37.16)

sa viṁdhyanīlayormadhye rājyamasya dadau prabhuḥ sa daṁḍastatra rājābhūdramye parvatamūrddhani

the lord Ikshvaku gave him a kingdom between the Vindhya and Nila mountains. There Danda became king, on a delightful mountain peak.

Verse 17 (padma.1.37.17)

puraṁ cāpratimaṁ tena niveśāya tathā kṛtam nāma tasya purasyātha madhumattamiti svayam

He built there an incomparable city to dwell in; the name he gave it, of his own choosing, was Madhumatta.

Verse 18 (padma.1.37.18)

tathādeśena saṁpannaḥ śūro vāsamathākarot evaṁ rājā sa tadrājyaṁ cakāra sapurohitaḥ

Thus favored by that region, the hero took up his residence. So did that king rule the kingdom, together with his family priest.

Verse 19 (padma.1.37.19)

prahṛṣṭa suprajākīrṇaṁ devarājo yathā divi tataḥ sa daṁḍaḥ kākutstha bahuvarṣagaṇāyutam

Joyful, filled with good subjects, like the king of gods in heaven — thus, O Kakutstha, did Danda rule for a myriad of years.

Verse 20 (padma.1.37.20)

akārayattu dharmātmā rājyaṁ nihatakaṁṭakaṁ atha kāle tu kasmiṁścidrājā bhārgavamāśramam

The righteous-souled king kept his realm free of trouble. Then, at a certain time, the king approached the hermitage of the Bhargava (Shukra),

Verse 21 (padma.1.37.21)

ramaṇīyamupākrāmaccaitramāse manorame tatra bhārgavakanyāṁ tu rūpeṇāpratimāṁ bhuvi

lovely in the month of Chaitra. There he saw the daughter of the Bhargava, unmatched in beauty on earth,

Verse 22 (padma.1.37.22)

vicaraṁtīṁ vanoddeśe daṁḍo'paśyadanuttamām uttuṁgapīvarīṁ śyāmāṁ caṁdrābhavadanāṁ śubhām

wandering in a part of the forest — Danda saw that peerless girl, tall and full-figured, dark-complexioned, moon-faced, auspicious,

Verse 23 (padma.1.37.23)

sunāsāṁ cārusarvāṁgīṁ pīnonnatapayodharām madhye kṣāmāṁ ca vistīrṇāṁ dṛṣṭvā tāṁ kurute mudam

fine-nosed, lovely in every limb, with full, high breasts, slender-waisted, broad-hipped — seeing her, he felt delight.

Verse 24 (padma.1.37.24)

ekavastrāṁ vane caikāṁ prathame yauvane sthitām sa tāṁ dṛṣṭvātvadharmeṇa anaṁgaśarapīḍitaḥ

Clad in a single garment, alone in the forest, standing in the first bloom of youth — seeing her, he was, unrighteously, overcome by the arrows of Kama.

Verse 25 (padma.1.37.25)

abhigamya suviśrāṁtāṁ kanyāṁ vacanamabravīt kutastvamasi suśroṇi kasya cāsi suśobhane

He approached the maiden, resting at ease, and said: 'Whence are you, fair-hipped one, and whose daughter are you, O beautiful one?'

Verse 26 (padma.1.37.26)

pīḍatohamanaṁgena pṛcchāmi tvāṁ suśobhane tvayā me'pahṛtaṁ cittaṁ darśanādeva suṁdari

'Tormented by the god of love, I ask you, O lovely one. My mind has been stolen away by you, merely at the sight of you, O beautiful woman.'

Verse 27 (padma.1.37.27)

'This charming face of yours steals even the minds of sages. If I do not obtain you, know me to be as good as dead.'

Verse 28 (padma.1.37.28)

tvayā hṛtā mama prāṇā māṁ jīvaya sulocane dāsosmi te varārohe bhaktaṁ māṁ bhaja śobhane

'My life-breath has been stolen by you; give me life, O fair-eyed one. I am your servant, O lovely one; accept me, your devotee, O beautiful one.'

Verse 29 (padma.1.37.29)

tasyaivaṁ tu bruvāṇasya madonmattasya kāminaḥ bhārgavī pratyuvācedaṁ vacaḥ savinayaṁ nṛpam

To him speaking thus, maddened with passion and lust, the daughter of Bhrigu replied with these humble words:

Verse 30 (padma.1.37.30)

bhārgavasya sutāṁ viddhi śukrasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ arajāṁ nāma rājeṁdra jyeṣṭhāmāśramavāsinaḥ

'Know me to be the daughter of the Bhargava Shukra, whose deeds are unblemished — my name is Araja, O lord of kings, the eldest, a dweller in this hermitage.'

Verse 31 (padma.1.37.31)

śukraḥ pitā me rājeṁdra tvaṁ ca śiṣyo mahātmanaḥ dharmato bhaginī cāhaṁ bhavāmi nṛpanaṁdana

'Shukra is my father, O lord of kings, and you are his disciple; by dharma, therefore, I am your sister, O prince.'

Verse 32 (padma.1.37.32)

evaṁvidhaṁ vaco vaktuṁ na tvamarhasi pārthiva anyebhyopi suduṣṭebhyo rakṣyā cāhaṁ sadā tvayā

'It is not fitting for you to speak such words, O king. Even from other wicked men, I ought always to be protected by you.'

Verse 33 (padma.1.37.33)

krodhano me pitā raudro bhasmatvaṁ tvāṁ samānayet athavā rājadharmeṇāsaṁbaṁdhaṁ kuruṣe balāt

'My father is wrathful and fierce; he could reduce you to ashes. Yet you seek union with me by force, in violation of the duty of a king.'

Verse 34 (padma.1.37.34)

pitaraṁ yācayasva tvaṁ dharmadṛṣṭena karmaṇā varayasva nṛpaśreṣṭha pitaraṁ me mahādyutim

'Ask my father through a lawful act; woo him, O best of kings — my father, of great splendor.'

Verse 35 (padma.1.37.35)

anyathā vipulaṁ duḥkhaṁ tava ghoraṁ bhaveddhruvam kruddho hi me pitā sarvaṁ trailokyamabhinirdahet

'Otherwise, vast and terrible suffering will surely come upon you; for my father, when angered, could burn the entire three worlds to ashes.'

Verse 36 (padma.1.37.36)

tato'śubhaṁ mahāghoraṁ śrutvā daṁḍaḥ sudāruṇam pratyuvāca madonmattaḥ śirasābhinataḥ punaḥ

Then Danda, having heard those inauspicious and utterly dreadful words, still maddened with passion, bowing his head, replied again:

Verse 37 (padma.1.37.37)

prasādaṁ kuru suśroṇi kāmonmattasya kāmini tvayā ruddhā mama prāṇā viśīryaṁti śubhānane

'Show mercy, fair-hipped one, on one maddened with desire. My life-breaths, held back on account of you, are wasting away, O fair-faced one.'

Verse 38 (padma.1.37.38)

tvāṁ prāpya vairaṁ me'trāstu vadho vāpi mahattaraḥ bhaktaṁ bhajasva māṁ bhīru tvayi bhaktirhi me parā

'Let there be enmity, or even a greater killing, over gaining you — accept me, your devotee, O timid one, for my devotion to you is supreme.'

Verse 39 (padma.1.37.39)

evamuktvā tu tāṁ kanyāṁ balātsaṁgṛhya bāhunā anyena rājñā hastena vivastrā sā tathā kṛtā

Having said this, the king seized the maiden forcibly with one arm; with his other hand he stripped her of her garment.

Verse 40 (padma.1.37.40)

aṁgamaṁge samāśleṣya mukhe caiva mukhaṁ kṛtam visphuraṁtīṁ yathākāmaṁ maithunāyopacakrame

Pressing limb to limb and mouth to mouth, he began, as she struggled, to force union upon her against her will.

Verse 41 (padma.1.37.41)

tamanarthaṁ mahāghoraṁ daṁḍaḥ kṛtvā sudāruṇam nagaraṁ svaṁ jagāmāśu madonmatta iva dvipaḥ

Having thus committed that terrible and grievous wrong, Danda swiftly went to his own city, like an elephant maddened with rut.

Verse 42 (padma.1.37.42)

bhārgavī rudatī dīnā āśramasyāvidūrataḥ pratyapālayadudvignā pitaraṁ devasammitam

The daughter of Bhrigu, weeping and wretched, not far from the hermitage, waited in distress for her father, who was equal to a god.

Verse 43 (padma.1.37.43)

sa muhūrtādupaspṛśya devarṣiramitadyutiḥ svamāśramaṁ śiṣyavṛtaṁ kṣudhārtaḥ sanyavartata

After a while, the divine sage, of measureless splendor, having performed his ablutions, returned to his hermitage, surrounded by his disciples, afflicted with hunger.

Verse 44 (padma.1.37.44)

sopaśyadarajāṁ dīnāṁ rajasā samabhiplutām caṁdrasya ghanasaṁyuktāṁ jyotsnāmiva parājitām

He saw Araja wretched, covered all over with dust, like moonlight overcome and obscured by a dense cloud.

Verse 45 (padma.1.37.45)

tasya roṣaḥ samabhavatkṣudhārtasya mahātmanaḥ nirdahanniva lokāṁstrīṁstānśiṣyānsamuvāca ha

Wrath arose in that great soul, afflicted as he was by hunger, as though it would burn the three worlds; he spoke thus to his disciples:

Verse 46 (padma.1.37.46)

paśyadhvaṁ viparītasya daṁḍasyādīrghadarśinaḥ vipattiṁ ghorasaṁkāśāṁ dīptāmagniśikhāmiva

'Behold the calamity, terrible as a blazing tongue of fire, that shall befall the perverse and short-sighted Danda.'

Verse 47 (padma.1.37.47)

yannāśaṁ durgatiṁ prāptassānugaśca na saṁśayaḥ yastu dīptahutāśasya arciḥ saṁspṛṣṭavāniha

'He, along with his followers, shall without doubt meet destruction and evil fate — for he has touched the very flame of a blazing fire.'

Verse 48 (padma.1.37.48)

yasmātsa kṛtavānpāpamīdṛśaṁ ghorasaṁmitam tasmātprāpsyati durmedhāḥ pāṁsuvarṣamanuttamam

'Because he has committed such a dreadful sin, that dull-witted one shall receive an unparalleled rain of dust.'

Verse 49 (padma.1.37.49)

kurājā deśasaṁyuktaḥ sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ pāpakarmasamācāro vadhaṁ prāpsyati durmatiḥ

'That evil king, together with his realm, servants, army and mounts, engaged in sinful conduct — that ill-minded one shall meet destruction.'

Verse 50 (padma.1.37.50)

samaṁtādyojanaśataṁ viṣayaṁ cāsya durmateḥ dhunotu pāṁsuvarṣeṇa mahatā pākaśāsanaḥ

'May Indra shake down, with a mighty rain of dust, this evil man's territory for a hundred yojanas all around.'

Verse 51 (padma.1.37.51)

sarvasatvāni yānīha jaṁgamasthāvarāṇi vai sarveṣāṁ pāṁsuvarṣeṇa kṣayaḥ kṣipraṁ bhaviṣyati

'Whatever living beings there are here, moving and unmoving, all shall swiftly perish through this rain of dust.'

Verse 52 (padma.1.37.52)

daṁḍasya viṣayo yāvattāvatsavanamāśramam pāṁsuvarṣamivākasmātsaptarātraṁ bhaviṣyati

'As far as Danda's territory extends, along with this hermitage, a sudden rain of dust shall fall for seven nights.'

Verse 53 (padma.1.37.53)

ityuktvā krodhasaṁtaptastamāśramanivāsinam janaṁ janapadasyāṁte sthīyatāmityuvāca ha

Having said this, burning with rage, he told the people dwelling in that hermitage to withdraw to the edge of the country.

Verse 54 (padma.1.37.54)

uktamātre uśanasā āśramāvasatho janaḥ kṣipraṁ tu viṣayāttasmātsthānaṁ cakre ca bāhyataḥ

As soon as Ushanas had spoken, the people dwelling in the hermitage swiftly established their place outside that territory.

Verse 55 (padma.1.37.55)

taṁ tathoktvā munijanamarajāmidamabravīt āśrame tvaṁ sudurmedhe vasa ceha samāhitā

Having thus spoken to the sages, he said to Araja: 'You, foolish girl, remain here in the hermitage, with a composed mind.'

Verse 56 (padma.1.37.56)

idaṁ yojanaparyaṁtamāśramaṁ ruciraprabham araje virajāstiṣṭha kālamatra samāśśatam

'This radiant hermitage extends a yojana around; O Araja, stay here free of stain for a hundred years.'

Verse 57 (padma.1.37.57)

śrutvā niyogaṁ viprarṣerarajā bhārgavī tadā tatheti pitaraṁ prāha bhārgavaṁ bhṛśaduḥkhitā

Having heard the command of the sage, Araja the Bhargavi, deeply grieved, said 'So be it' to her father.

Verse 58 (padma.1.37.58)

ityuktvā bhārgavo vāsaṁ tasmādanyamupākramat saptāhe bhasmasādbhūtaṁ yathoktaṁ brahmavādinā

Having said this, the Bhargava took up residence elsewhere. Within seven days, all was reduced to ashes, just as declared by that knower of Brahman.

Verse 59 (padma.1.37.59)

tasmāddaṁḍasya viṣayo viṁdhyaśailasya mānuṣa śapto hyuśanasā rāma tadābhūddharṣaṇe kṛte

Thus, O man, the territory of Danda near the Vindhya mountain was cursed by Ushanas, when the outrage had been committed.

Verse 60 (padma.1.37.60)

tataḥprabhṛti kākutstha daṁḍakāraṇyamucyate etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yanmāṁ pṛcchasi rāghava
