Rama's Journey to Lanka and the Establishing of Vamana

Chapter 37All chaptersChapter 39

Verse 1 (padma.1.38.1)

bhīṣma uvāca kathaṁ rāmeṇa viprarṣe kānyakubje tu vāmanaḥ sthāpitaḥ kva ca labdhosau vistarānmama kīrtaya

Bhishma said: O sage among Brahmins, how did Rama establish Vamana at Kanyakubja? Where was he obtained — relate it to me in detail.

Verse 2 (padma.1.38.2)

tathā hi madhurā caiṣā yā vāṇī rāmakīrtane kīrtitā bhagavanmahyaṁ hṛtā karṇasukhāvaha

This sweet speech of yours, O venerable one, in the glorification of Rama, spoken to me, has stolen my heart, so pleasing is it to the ear.

Verse 3 (padma.1.38.3)

anurāgeṇa taṁ lokāḥ snehātpaśyaṁti rāghavam dharmajñaśca kṛtajñaśca buddhyā ca pariniṣṭhitaḥ

People look upon Raghava with affection and love; he is a knower of dharma, grateful, and firmly established in wisdom.

Verse 4 (padma.1.38.4)

praśāsti pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ dharmeṇa susamāhitaḥ tasminśāsati vai rājyaṁ sarvakāmaphalādrumāḥ

He rules the whole earth, well-composed, through righteousness. While he reigns, the trees yield fruit granting every desire,

Verse 5 (padma.1.38.5)

rasavaṁtaḥ prabhūtāśca vāsāṁsi vividhāni ca akṛṣṭapacyā pṛthivī niḥsapatnā mahātmanaḥ

abundant and full of flavor, and garments of every kind; the earth ripens without ploughing, free of rival, under that great soul.

Verse 6 (padma.1.38.6)

devakāryaṁ kṛtaṁ tena rāvaṇo lokakaṁṭakaḥ saputromātyasahito līlayaiva nipātitaḥ

By him the work of the gods was accomplished; Ravana, the thorn of the world, was struck down as if in mere play, together with his sons and ministers.

Verse 7 (padma.1.38.7)

tasyabuddhissamutpannā pūrṇe dharme dvijottama tasyāhaṁ caritaṁ sarvaṁ śrotumicchāmi vai mune

The resolve for complete dharma arose in him, O best of the twice-born. I wish to hear the whole of his conduct, O sage.

Verse 8 (padma.1.38.8)

pulastya uvāca kasyacittvatha kālasya rāmo dharmapathe sthitaḥ yaccakāra mahābāho śṛṇuṣvaikamanā nṛpa

Pulastya said: After some time, Rama, established on the path of dharma — hear, O king, with a single-pointed mind, what that mighty-armed one did.

Verse 9 (padma.1.38.9)

sasmāra rākṣaseṁdraṁ taṁ kathaṁ rājā vibhīṣaṇaḥ laṁkāyāṁ saṁsthito rājyaṁ kariṣyati ca rākṣasaḥ

He recalled that lord of rakshasas — how King Vibhishana, established in Lanka, that rakshasa, would govern the kingdom.

Verse 10 (padma.1.38.10)

gīrvāṇeṣu prātikūlyaṁ vināśasya tu lakṣaṇam mayā tasya tu taddattaṁ rājyaṁ caṁdrārkakālikam

Hostility toward the gods is the very sign of ruin. By me that kingdom was given to him, to last as long as the sun and moon.

Verse 11 (padma.1.38.11)

tasyāvināśataḥ kīrtiḥ sthirā me śāśvatī bhavet rāvaṇena tapastaptaṁ vināśāyātmanastviha

Through his not perishing, my fame shall remain firm and eternal. Ravana had performed austerities that, here, led only to his own destruction.

Verse 12 (padma.1.38.12)

vidhvastaḥ sa ca pāpiṣṭho devakārye mayādhunā tadidānīṁ mayānveṣyaḥ svayaṁ gatvā vibhīṣaṇaḥ

That most sinful one has now been destroyed by me, for the work of the gods. Now, therefore, I myself must go and seek out Vibhishana,

Verse 13 (padma.1.38.13)

saṁdeṣṭavyaṁ hitaṁ tasya yena tiṣṭhetsa śāśvatam evaṁ ciṁtayatastasya rāmasyāmitatejasaḥ

and counsel him for his good, so that he may abide securely forever. As Rama, of measureless splendor, was thus reflecting,

Verse 14 (padma.1.38.14)

ājagāmātha bharato rāmaṁ dṛṣṭvābravīdidam kiṁ tvaṁ ciṁtayase deva na rahasyaṁ vadasva me

Bharata came; seeing Rama, he said this: 'What are you thinking of, my lord? If it is not a secret, tell me,'

Verse 15 (padma.1.38.15)

devakārye dharāyāṁ vā svakārye vā narottama evaṁ bruvaṁtaṁ bharataṁ dhyāyamānamavasthitam

'is it a matter of the gods, or of the earth, or your own affair, O best of men?' To Bharata speaking thus, Rama, who sat absorbed in thought,

Verse 16 (padma.1.38.16)

abravīdrāghavo vākyaṁ rahasyaṁ tu na vai tava bhavānbahiścaraḥ prāṇo lakṣmaṇaśca mahāyaśāḥ

Raghava replied: 'There is no secret from you. You are my very breath moving outside my body, and so is the greatly renowned Lakshmana.'

Verse 17 (padma.1.38.17)

avedyaṁ bhavato nāsti mama satyaṁ vidhāraya eṣā me mahatī ciṁtā kathaṁ devairvibhīṣaṇaḥ

'There is nothing that should not be told to you; hold this as true. This is my great concern — how it stands with Vibhishana with regard to the gods,'

Verse 18 (padma.1.38.18)

vartate yaddhitārthaṁ vai daśagrīvo nipātitaḥ gamiṣye tadahaṁ laṁkāṁ yatra cāsau vibhīṣaṇaḥ

'for whose good Dashagriva was struck down. So I shall go to Lanka, where that Vibhishana is,'

Verse 19 (padma.1.38.19)

taṁ ca dṛṣṭvā purīṁ tāṁ tu kāryamuktvā ca rākṣasam ālokya sarvavasudhāṁ sugrīvaṁ vānareśvaram

'and having seen him and that city, and told the rakshasa what needs to be done, I shall survey the whole earth — Sugriva, lord of the monkeys,'

Verse 20 (padma.1.38.20)

mahārājaṁ ca śatrughnaṁ bhātṛputrāṁśca sarvaśaḥ evaṁ vadati kākutsthe bharataḥ purataḥ sthitaḥ

'the great king Shatrughna, and all my brothers' sons.' As Kakutstha spoke thus, Bharata, standing before him,

Verse 21 (padma.1.38.21)

uvāca rāghavaṁ vākyaṁ gamiṣye bhavatā saha evaṁ kuru mahābāho saumitririha tiṣṭhatu

said to Raghava: 'I shall go together with you.' 'So be it, O mighty-armed one; let Saumitri remain here.'

Verse 22 (padma.1.38.22)

ityuktvā bharataṁ rāmaḥ saumitraṁ cāha vai pure rakṣākāryā tvayā vīra yāvadāgamanaṁ hi nau

Having said this to Bharata, Rama told Saumitra: 'The city must be guarded by you, O hero, until our return.'

Verse 23 (padma.1.38.23)

evaṁ lakṣmaṇamādiśya dhyātvā vai puṣpakaṁ nṛpa āruroha sa vai yānaṁ kausalyānaṁdavardhanaḥ

Having thus instructed Lakshmana, and having thought of the Pushpaka, O king, that increaser of Kausalya's joy mounted the chariot.

Verse 24 (padma.1.38.24)

puṣpakaṁ tu tataḥ prāptaṁ gāṁdhāraviṣayo yataḥ bharatasya sutau dṛṣṭvā jagannītiṁ nirīkṣya ca

The Pushpaka then reached the region of Gandhara; having seen Bharata's two sons there and examined the governance of the land,

Verse 25 (padma.1.38.25)

pūrvāṁ diśaṁ tato gatvā lakṣmaṇasya sutau yataḥ pureṣu teṣu ṣaḍrātramuṣitvā raghunaṁdanau

they went then to the eastern direction, where Lakshmana's two sons were; the two Raghunandanas, having stayed six nights in those cities,

Verse 26 (padma.1.38.26)

gatau tena vimānena dakṣiṇāmabhito diśam gaṁgāyāmunasaṁbhedaṁ prayāgamṛṣisevitam

went by that chariot toward the southern direction, to Prayaga, the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna, frequented by sages.

Verse 27 (padma.1.38.27)

abhivādya bharadvājamatrerāśramamīyatuḥ saṁbhāṣya ca munīṁstatra janasthānamupāgatau

Having paid homage to Bharadvaja, they reached the hermitage of Atri; having conversed with the sages there, the two arrived at Janasthana.

Verse 28 (padma.1.38.28)

rāma uvāca atra pūrvaṁ hṛtā sītā rāvaṇena durātmanā hatvā jaṭāyuṣaṁ gṛdhraṁ yosau pitṛsakho hi nau

Rama said: 'Here formerly Sita was carried off by the evil-souled Ravana, after he had slain the vulture Jatayu, who was our father's friend.'

Verse 29 (padma.1.38.29)

atrāsmākaṁ mahadyuddhaṁ kabaṁdhena kubuddhinā hatena tena dagdhena sītāste rāvaṇālaye

'Here we had a great battle with the ill-minded Kabandha; when he was slain and cremated, we learned that Sita was in Ravana's dwelling.'

Verse 30 (padma.1.38.30)

'On Mount Rishyamuka there is a monkey named Sugriva; he will render you aid. Go to Pampa with your brother,'

Verse 31 (padma.1.38.31)

paṁpāsaraḥ samāsādya śabarīṁ gaccha tāpasīm ityukto duḥkhito vīra nirāśo jīvite sthitaḥ

'having reached Lake Pampa, go to the ascetic woman Shabari.' Thus addressed, sorrowful, O hero, I stood there, despairing of life.

Verse 32 (padma.1.38.32)

iyaṁ sā nalinī vīra yasyāṁ vai lakṣmaṇovadat mā kṛthāḥ puruṣavyāghra śokaṁ śatruvināśana

'This is that same lotus-pond, O hero, where Lakshmana said: "Do not grieve, O tiger among men, O destroyer of foes."'

Verse 33 (padma.1.38.33)

ājñākāriṇi bhṛtye ca mayi prāpsyasi maithilīm atra me vārṣikā māsā gatā varṣaśatopamāḥ

'"With me as your obedient servant, you shall recover the princess of Mithila."' Here the months of the rains passed for me like a hundred years.

Verse 34 (padma.1.38.34)

atraiva nihato vālī sugrīvārthe paraṁtapa eṣā sā dṛśyate nūnaṁ kiṣkiṁdhā vālipālitā

'Here indeed Vali was slain, for Sugriva's sake, O scorcher of foes. And here, surely, is seen that same Kishkindha, once ruled by Vali,'

Verse 35 (padma.1.38.35)

yasyāṁ vai sa hi dharmātmā sugrīvo vānareśvaraḥ vānaraiḥ sahito vīra tāvadāste samāḥ śatam

'in which that righteous-souled Sugriva, lord of the monkeys, together with the monkeys, O hero, dwells for a hundred years.'

Verse 36 (padma.1.38.36)

vānaraissaha sugrīvo yāvadāste sabhāṁ gataḥ tāvattatrāgatau vīrau puryāṁ bharatarāghavau

While Sugriva, together with the monkeys, was seated in the assembly hall, at that moment the two heroes, Bharata and Raghava, arrived there in the city.

Verse 37 (padma.1.38.37)

dṛṣṭvā sa bhrātarau prāptau praṇipatyābravīdidam kva yuvāṁ prasthitau vīrau kāryaṁ kiṁ nu kariṣyathaḥ

Seeing the two brothers arrived, he bowed and said this: 'Where are you two heroes bound, and what task will you now perform?'

Verse 38 (padma.1.38.38)

viniveśyāsane tau ca dadāvarghye svayaṁ tadā evaṁ sabhāsthite tatra dharmiṣṭe raghunaṁdane

He then seated them, and himself offered the arghya. As the righteous Raghunandana sat there in the assembly,

Verse 39 (padma.1.38.39)

Angada, Hanuman, Nala, Nila, Patala, Gaja, Gavaksha, Gavaya, and the greatly renowned Panasa —

purodhaso maṁtriṇaśca daivajño dadhivakrakaḥ nīlaśśatabalirmaindo dvivido gaṁdhamādanaḥ

priests and ministers, the astrologer Dadhivaktra, Nila, Shatabali, Mainda, Dvivida, Gandhamadana,

Verse 41 (padma.1.38.41)

vīrabāhussubāhuśca vīraseno vināyakaḥ sūryābhaḥ kumudaścaiva suṣeṇo hariyūthapaḥ

Virabahu, Subahu, Virasena, Vinayaka, Suryabha, Kumuda, and Sushena, the chief of the monkey troops,

Verse 42 (padma.1.38.42)

ṝṣabho vinataścaiva gavākhyo bhīmavikramaḥ ṝkṣarājaśca dhūmraśca sahasainyairupāgatāḥ

Rishabha, Vinata, the one named Gava of terrible valor, Rikshraja and Dhumra — all these came with their troops.

Verse 43 (padma.1.38.43)

aṁtaḥpurāṇi sarvāṇi rumā tārā tathaiva ca avarodhoṁgadasyāpi tathānyāḥ paricārikāḥ

All the women of the inner apartments — Ruma and Tara likewise — and Angada's household too, and other attendants,

Verse 44 (padma.1.38.44)

praharṣamatulaṁ prāpya sādhusādhviti cābruvan vānarāśca mahātmānaḥ sugrīvasahitāstadā

filled with matchless joy, cried out, 'Well done, well done!' And the great-souled monkeys, together with Sugriva, then,

Verse 45 (padma.1.38.45)

vānaryaśca mahābhāgāstārādyāstatra rāghavam abhiprekṣyāśrukaṁṭhyaśca praṇipatyedamabruvan

and the fortunate monkey-women, Tara and the others, beholding Raghava there, their throats choked with tears, bowed and said this:

Verse 46 (padma.1.38.46)

kva sā devī tvayā deva yā vinirjityarāvaṇam śuddhiṁ kṛtvā hi te vahnau pituragra umāpateḥ

'Where is that queen, my lord — she whom, after conquering Ravana, you had prove her purity in fire, before your father and the Lord of Uma?'

Verse 47 (padma.1.38.47)

tvayānītā purīṁ rāma na tāṁ paśyāmi tegrataḥ na vinā tvaṁ tayā deva śobhase raghunaṁdana

'Brought by you to the city, O Rama, I do not see her before you. Without her, my lord, you do not shine, O Raghunandana.'

Verse 48 (padma.1.38.48)

'Where indeed does that virtuous Janaki dwell, without you? I know of no other wife of yours; without a wife you do not shine —'

Verse 49 (padma.1.38.49)

krauṁcayugmaṁ mitho yadvaccakravākayugaṁ yathā evaṁ vadaṁtīṁ tāṁ tārāṁ tārādhipasamānanām

'as a pair of curlews belong to each other, or as a pair of chakravaka birds.' To Tara, moon-faced, speaking thus,

Verse 50 (padma.1.38.50)

prāha pravacasāṁ śreṣṭho rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ cārudaṁṣṭre viśālākṣi kālo hi duratikramaḥ

Rama, lotus-eyed, best among speakers, replied: 'O fair-toothed, wide-eyed one, time indeed is impossible to overcome.'

Verse 51 (padma.1.38.51)

sarvaṁ kālakṛtaṁ viddhi jagadetaccarācaram visṛjyatāḥ striyaḥ sarvāḥ sugrīvobhimukhaḥ sthitaḥ

'Know that this entire world, moving and unmoving, is the work of time.' Then, dismissing all the women, he turned to face Sugriva.

Verse 52 (padma.1.38.52)

sugrīva uvāca bhavaṁtau yena kāryeṇa ihāyātau nareśvarau taccāpi kathyatāṁ śīghraṁ kṛtyakālo hi vartate

Sugriva said: 'For what purpose have the two of you, lords of men, come here? Tell me that too quickly, for the time for action is at hand.'

Verse 53 (padma.1.38.53)

bruvāṇamevaṁ sugrīvaṁ bharato rāmacoditaḥ ācacakṣe ca gamanaṁ laṁkāyāṁ rāghavasya tu tau cābravīcca sugrīvo bhavadbhyāṁ sahitaḥ purīm

To Sugriva speaking thus, Bharata, at Rama's prompting, told him of Raghava's intended journey to Lanka. And Sugriva said to the two: 'Together with you, to that city —'

Verse 54 (padma.1.38.54)

gamiṣye rākṣasaṁ deva draṣṭuṁ tatra vibhīṣaṇam sugrīveṇaivamukte tu gacchasvetyāha rāghavaḥ

'—I shall go, my lord, to see the rakshasa Vibhishana there.' When Sugriva had spoken thus, Raghava said: 'Come, then.'

Verse 55 (padma.1.38.55)

sugrīvo rāghavau tau ca puṣpake tu sthitāstrayaḥ tāvatprāptaṁ vimānaṁ tu samudrasyottaraṁ taṭam

Sugriva and the two Raghavas, the three of them, took their places in the Pushpaka; and at once the chariot reached the northern shore of the ocean.

Verse 56 (padma.1.38.56)

abravīdbharataṁ rāmo hyatra me rākṣaseśvaraḥ caturbhiḥ sacivaiḥ sārdhaṁ jīvitārthe vibhīṣaṇaḥ

Rama said to Bharata: 'Here, that lord of rakshasas, Vibhishana, together with his four ministers, seeking to save his life,'

Verse 57 (padma.1.38.57)

prāptastato lakṣmaṇena laṁkārājyebhiṣecitaḥ atra cāhaṁ samudrasya parepāre sthitastryaham

'came to me; and thereafter he was consecrated by Lakshmana to the kingship of Lanka. And here I myself stood for three days on the far shore of the ocean,'

Verse 58 (padma.1.38.58)

darśanaṁ dāsyate me'sau jñātikāryaṁ bhaviṣyati tāvanna darśanaṁ mahyaṁ dattametena śatruhan
