The Cosmic Vishnu and the Vision of Markandeya
Verse 1 (padma.1.39.1)
भीष्म उवाच। कथितं वामनस्यैव माहात्म्यं विस्तरेण वै। पुनस्तस्यैव माहात्म्यमन्यद्विष्णोरतो वद।
bhīṣma uvāca kathitaṁ vāmanasyaiva māhātmyaṁ vistareṇa vai punastasyaiva māhātmyamanyadviṣṇorato vada
Bhishma said: 'The greatness of Vamana himself has been told in detail. Now tell me another, further greatness of that same Vishnu.'
Verse 2 (padma.1.39.2)
पद्मं कथमभूद्देव नाभौ येनाभवज्जगत्। कथं च वैष्णवी सृष्टिः पद्ममध्येऽभवत्पुरा।
padmaṁ kathamabhūddeva nābhau yenābhavajjagat kathaṁ ca vaiṣṇavī sṛṣṭiḥ padmamadhye'bhavatpurā
'How did the lotus arise, my lord, from the navel, by which the world came to be? And how did the creation belonging to Vishnu formerly arise from within that lotus?'
Verse 3 (padma.1.39.3)
कथं पाद्मे महाकल्पेऽभवत्पद्ममयं जगत्। जलार्णवगतस्येह नाभौ जातं जलानुगं।
kathaṁ pādme mahākalpe'bhavatpadmamayaṁ jagat jalārṇavagatasyeha nābhau jātaṁ jalānugaṁ
'How, in the great Padma-kalpa, did the world become lotus-formed? Tell me of that which, born from the navel of him who lay in the ocean of waters, follows the waters.'
Verse 4 (padma.1.39.4)
प्रभावं पद्मनाभस्य स्वपतः सागरांभसि। पुष्करे तु कथं जाता देवा ॠषिगणाः पुरा।
prabhāvaṁ padmanābhasya svapataḥ sāgarāṁbhasi puṣkare tu kathaṁ jātā devā ṝṣigaṇāḥ purā
'Tell me the majesty of the Lotus-Naveled One as he slept upon the ocean waters -- and how, formerly, the gods and companies of sages were born at Pushkara.'
Verse 5 (padma.1.39.5)
एतदाख्याहि निखिलं योगं योगविदां पते। कथं निर्मितवांस्तत्र चैतं लोकं सनातनम्।
etadākhyāhi nikhilaṁ yogaṁ yogavidāṁ pate kathaṁ nirmitavāṁstatra caitaṁ lokaṁ sanātanam
'Relate all of this yoga, O lord of the knowers of yoga -- how he there fashioned this eternal world.'
Verse 6 (padma.1.39.6)
कथमेकार्णवे शून्ये नष्टे स्थावरजंगमे। भूगोलके प्रदग्धे तु प्रणष्टोरगराक्षसे।
kathamekārṇave śūnye naṣṭe sthāvarajaṁgame bhūgolake pradagdhe tu praṇaṣṭoragarākṣase
'How, when there was one empty ocean, with all that moves and is still destroyed, when the globe of the earth was burnt up, and serpents and rakshasas had perished,'
Verse 7 (padma.1.39.7)
नष्टानलानिलाकाशे नष्टधर्मे महीतले। केवले गह्वरीभूते महाभूतविपर्यये।
naṣṭānalānilākāśe naṣṭadharme mahītale kevale gahvarībhūte mahābhūtaviparyaye
'when fire, wind, and ether were destroyed, when dharma on the surface of the earth had perished, when all had become a mere abyss, in that reversal of the great elements,'
Verse 8 (padma.1.39.8)
किं नु विश्वपतिः साक्षान्महातेजा महाद्युतिः। आस्ते यथाध्याननिष्ठो विधिमास्थाय योगवित्।
kiṁ nu viśvapatiḥ sākṣānmahātejā mahādyutiḥ āste yathādhyānaniṣṭho vidhimāsthāya yogavit
'how then did the lord of the universe himself, of great splendor, great radiance, abide, as if fixed in meditation, the knower of yoga, following his own ordinance?'
Verse 9 (padma.1.39.9)
शृण्वतः परया भक्त्या ब्रह्मन्नेतदशेषतः। वक्तुमर्हसि धर्मज्ञ यशो नारायणात्मकम्।
śṛṇvataḥ parayā bhaktyā brahmannetadaśeṣataḥ vaktumarhasi dharmajña yaśo nārāyaṇātmakam
'I listen with supreme devotion, O Brahmin; you should tell me this in full, O knower of dharma -- the glory belonging to Narayana.'
Verse 10 (padma.1.39.10)
श्रद्धिनः सूपविष्टस्य भगवन्वक्तुमर्हसि। पुलस्त्य उवाच। नारायणस्य यशसः श्रवणे या तव स्पृहा।
śraddhinaḥ sūpaviṣṭasya bhagavanvaktumarhasi pulastya uvāca nārāyaṇasya yaśasaḥ śravaṇe yā tava spṛhā
'To me, full of faith and well-seated to listen, you should tell it, my lord.' Pulastya said: 'This eagerness of yours to hear of Narayana's glory --'
Verse 11 (padma.1.39.11)
सद्वंशान्वयपूतस्य न्याय्यं कुरुकुलोद्वह। शृणुष्वादिपुराणेषु देवेभ्यश्च यथा श्रुति।
sadvaṁśānvayapūtasya nyāyyaṁ kurukulodvaha śṛṇuṣvādipurāṇeṣu devebhyaśca yathā śruti
'--is fitting for one purified by descent from a noble lineage, O scion of the Kuru race. Listen, as it is heard in the primeval Puranas and from the gods,'
Verse 12 (padma.1.39.12)
ब्राह्मणानां च वदतां श्रुत्वा वै सुमहात्मनाम्। यथा च तपसा दृष्ट्वा बृहस्पति समद्युतिः।
brāhmaṇānāṁ ca vadatāṁ śrutvā vai sumahātmanām yathā ca tapasā dṛṣṭvā bṛhaspati samadyutiḥ
'and as heard from great-souled Brahmins speaking of it, and as it was seen through austerity by him of splendor equal to Brihaspati --'
Verse 13 (padma.1.39.13)
पराशरसुतः श्रीमान्गुरुर्द्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत्। तत्तेऽहं कथयिष्यामि यथाभक्ति यथाश्रुति।
parāśarasutaḥ śrīmāngururdvaipāyano'bravīt tatte'haṁ kathayiṣyāmi yathābhakti yathāśruti
'--the glorious son of Parashara, the guru Dvaipayana, told it. That I shall relate to you, according to devotion and according to what has been heard.'
Verse 14 (padma.1.39.14)
यद्विज्ञातं मया सम्यगृषिमार्गेण सत्तम। कः समुत्सहते ज्ञातुं परं नारायणात्मकम्।
yadvijñātaṁ mayā samyagṛṣimārgeṇa sattama kaḥ samutsahate jñātuṁ paraṁ nārāyaṇātmakam
'What has been rightly understood by me through the path of the sages, O most excellent one -- who indeed is able to know fully the supreme reality belonging to Narayana?'
Verse 15 (padma.1.39.15)
विश्वावितारं ब्रह्मायं न वेदयति तत्वतः। तत्कर्मविश्वदेवा न तद्रहस्यं महर्षिषु।
viśvāvitāraṁ brahmāyaṁ na vedayati tatvataḥ tatkarmaviśvadevā na tadrahasyaṁ maharṣiṣu
'Even this Brahma does not truly know that which sustains the universe; not even the gods of the universe know that action; that mystery is not among the great sages either.'
Verse 16 (padma.1.39.16)
स इज्यस्सर्वयज्ञानां स तत्त्वं तत्त्वदर्शिनाम्। अध्यात्ममध्यात्मविदां नरकं च विकर्मिणाम्।
sa ijyassarvayajñānāṁ sa tattvaṁ tattvadarśinām adhyātmamadhyātmavidāṁ narakaṁ ca vikarmiṇām
'He is the object of worship of all sacrifices; he is the truth for the seers of truth; he is the inner self for the knowers of the inner self, and hell for the doers of forbidden deeds.'
Verse 17 (padma.1.39.17)
अधिदैवं च तद्दैवमधिदैवतसंज्ञितम्। अधिभूतं च तद्भूतं परं च परमार्थिनाम्।
adhidaivaṁ ca taddaivamadhidaivatasaṁjñitam adhibhūtaṁ ca tadbhūtaṁ paraṁ ca paramārthinām
'He is that divinity called the presiding deity; he is that being called adhibhūta; and he is the supreme for those who seek the supreme.'
Verse 18 (padma.1.39.18)
स यज्ञो वेदनिर्दिष्टस्तत्तपः कवयो विदुः। यः कर्त्ता कारको बुद्धिर्यतः क्षेत्रज्ञ एव च।
sa yajño vedanirdiṣṭastattapaḥ kavayo viduḥ yaḥ karttā kārako buddhiryataḥ kṣetrajña eva ca
'He is the sacrifice enjoined by the Veda; the poets know him as that austerity; he is the doer, the causer, the intellect, and from him is the knower-of-the-field as well.'
Verse 19 (padma.1.39.19)
प्रणवः पुरुषः शास्ता एकश्चेति विभाव्यते। प्राणः पंचविधश्चैव ध्रुवमक्षरमेव च।
praṇavaḥ puruṣaḥ śāstā ekaśceti vibhāvyate prāṇaḥ paṁcavidhaścaiva dhruvamakṣarameva ca
'He is contemplated as the syllable Om, the Person, the Ruler, and the One; he is the fivefold vital breath, and the fixed, imperishable syllable as well.'
Verse 20 (padma.1.39.20)
कालः पाकश्च यज्ञश्च यष्टा चाधीतमेव च। उच्यते विविधैर्भावैः स एवायं तु तत्परम्।
kālaḥ pākaśca yajñaśca yaṣṭā cādhītameva ca ucyate vividhairbhāvaiḥ sa evāyaṁ tu tatparam
'He is called, by his manifold aspects, time, ripening, the sacrifice, the sacrificer, and even what is studied; he alone is that supreme reality.'
Verse 21 (padma.1.39.21)
स एव भगवान्सर्वं करोति न करोति च। सोस्मिन्कारयते सर्वं स्थानिनां च कृतिः कृता।
sa eva bhagavānsarvaṁ karoti na karoti ca sosminkārayate sarvaṁ sthānināṁ ca kṛtiḥ kṛtā
'That very Lord does everything, and does nothing; he causes everything to be done in this world, and the deeds of embodied beings are, in truth, done by him.'
Verse 22 (padma.1.39.22)
यजामहे तमेवाद्यं स एवोत्थाननिर्वृतः। यो वक्ता यच्च वक्तव्यं यश्चाहं तद्ब्रवीमि ते।
yajāmahe tamevādyaṁ sa evotthānanirvṛtaḥ yo vaktā yacca vaktavyaṁ yaścāhaṁ tadbravīmi te
'We worship him alone, the primeval one; he alone is at rest even in activity. He is the speaker, and what is to be spoken, and I who speak -- that I tell you.'
Verse 23 (padma.1.39.23)
श्रूयते यच्च वै श्राव्यं यच्चान्यत्परिजल्पितम्। या कथायाश्च श्रुतयो यो धर्मी धर्मतत्परः।
śrūyate yacca vai śrāvyaṁ yaccānyatparijalpitam yā kathāyāśca śrutayo yo dharmī dharmatatparaḥ
'Whatever is heard and is worth hearing, and whatever else is spoken of, and whatever traditions belong to narrative -- he who is righteous and devoted to dharma,'
Verse 24 (padma.1.39.24)
विश्वं विश्वपतिर्यश्च स तु नारायणः स्मृतः। यत्सत्यं यदनृतमादिमध्यभूतं यच्चांत्यं निरवधिकं च यद्भविष्यम्।
viśvaṁ viśvapatiryaśca sa tu nārāyaṇaḥ smṛtaḥ yatsatyaṁ yadanṛtamādimadhyabhūtaṁ yaccāṁtyaṁ niravadhikaṁ ca yadbhaviṣyam
'--the universe, and the lord of the universe -- he indeed is remembered as Narayana. Whatever is true, whatever is false, whatever was the beginning, the middle, and whatever shall be the end, unbounded, and whatever is yet to come --'
Verse 25 (padma.1.39.25)
यत्किंचिच्चरमचरं यदस्ति चान्यत्सर्वं तत्पुरुषवरः प्रधानभूतः। चत्वार्य्याहुः सहस्राणि वर्षाणां तत्कृतं युगम्।
yatkiṁciccaramacaraṁ yadasti cānyatsarvaṁ tatpuruṣavaraḥ pradhānabhūtaḥ catvāryyāhuḥ sahasrāṇi varṣāṇāṁ tatkṛtaṁ yugam
'whatever moving or unmoving thing there is, and whatever else exists -- all that is that foremost Person, the primary source. They say the Krita Yuga consists of four thousand years.'
Verse 26 (padma.1.39.26)
तस्य तावच्छती संध्या द्विगुणा कुरुनंदन। यत्र धर्मश्चतुष्पादस्त्वधर्मः पादविग्रहः।
tasya tāvacchatī saṁdhyā dviguṇā kurunaṁdana yatra dharmaścatuṣpādastvadharmaḥ pādavigrahaḥ
'Its twilight is likewise a hundred years, doubled, O joy of the Kurus; in it dharma stands on four feet, and adharma is broken into a mere foot's portion.'
Verse 27 (padma.1.39.27)
स्वधर्मनिरताः शांता जायंते यत्र मानवाः। विप्रा स्थिता धर्मपरा राजवृत्तिस्थिता नृपाः।
svadharmaniratāḥ śāṁtā jāyaṁte yatra mānavāḥ viprā sthitā dharmaparā rājavṛttisthitā nṛpāḥ
'In it men are born devoted to their own duty and at peace; Brahmins remain devoted to dharma, kings abide in the conduct proper to kings,'
Verse 28 (padma.1.39.28)
कृष्यामभिरता वैश्याः शूद्रा शुःश्रूषवस्तथा। तदा सत्यं च सत्वं च धर्मश्चैव विवर्धते।
kṛṣyāmabhiratā vaiśyāḥ śūdrā śuḥśrūṣavastathā tadā satyaṁ ca satvaṁ ca dharmaścaiva vivardhate
'Vaishyas are devoted to agriculture, and Shudras likewise to service; then truth, goodness, and dharma all increase.'
Verse 29 (padma.1.39.29)
सद्भिराचरितो धर्मो येन लोकः प्रवर्त्तते। एतत्कृतयुगे वृत्तं सर्वेषामेव पार्थिव।
sadbhirācarito dharmo yena lokaḥ pravarttate etatkṛtayuge vṛttaṁ sarveṣāmeva pārthiva
'Dharma is practiced by the virtuous, by which the world proceeds -- this was the conduct of everyone in the Krita Yuga, O king.'
Verse 30 (padma.1.39.30)
प्राणिनां धर्मसंज्ञानां नराणां नीचजन्मनाम्। त्रीणिवर्षसहस्राणि त्रेतायुगमिहोच्यते।
prāṇināṁ dharmasaṁjñānāṁ narāṇāṁ nīcajanmanām trīṇivarṣasahasrāṇi tretāyugamihocyate
'This applies to living beings possessed of the sense of dharma, not to men of lowly birth. The Treta Yuga is here said to consist of three thousand years.'
Verse 31 (padma.1.39.31)
तस्य तावच्छती संध्या द्विगुणा परिकीर्तिता। द्वाभ्यामधर्मः पादाभ्यां त्रिभिर्धर्मो व्यवस्थितः।
tasya tāvacchatī saṁdhyā dviguṇā parikīrtitā dvābhyāmadharmaḥ pādābhyāṁ tribhirdharmo vyavasthitaḥ
'Its twilight likewise is a hundred years, doubled, as declared. Adharma is established on two feet, dharma on three.'
Verse 32 (padma.1.39.32)
यत्र सत्यं च सत्वं च क्रिया धर्मो विधीयते। त्रेतायां विकृतिं यांति वर्णा लोभेन संयुताः।
yatra satyaṁ ca satvaṁ ca kriyā dharmo vidhīyate tretāyāṁ vikṛtiṁ yāṁti varṇā lobhena saṁyutāḥ
'In it truth, goodness, and ritual action ordain dharma. In the Treta, the classes become corrupted, joined with greed.'
Verse 33 (padma.1.39.33)
चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य वै कृत्यं क्षांतिर्दौर्बल्यमेव च। एषा त्रेतायुगगतिर्विचित्रा देवनिर्मिता।
cāturvarṇyasya vai kṛtyaṁ kṣāṁtirdaurbalyameva ca eṣā tretāyugagatirvicitrā devanirmitā
'Patience is the duty of the four classes, and also weakness creeps in. This is the course of the Treta Yuga, wondrous, fashioned by the gods.'
Verse 34 (padma.1.39.34)
द्वापरं द्विसहस्रं तु वर्षाणां कुरुनन्दन। तस्य तावच्छती सन्ध्या द्विगुणं युगमुच्यते।
dvāparaṁ dvisahasraṁ tu varṣāṇāṁ kurunandana tasya tāvacchatī sandhyā dviguṇaṁ yugamucyate
'The Dvapara consists of two thousand years, O joy of the Kurus; its twilight, likewise a hundred years, doubled, is called part of the age.'
Verse 35 (padma.1.39.35)
तत्राप्यतीवार्थपराः प्राणिनो रजसा हताः। शठा नैष्कृतिकाः क्षुद्रा जायन्ते कुरुनन्दन।
tatrāpyatīvārthaparāḥ prāṇino rajasā hatāḥ śaṭhā naiṣkṛtikāḥ kṣudrā jāyante kurunandana
'In it, too, beings become excessively devoted to wealth, afflicted by passion, deceitful, degraded, and base beings are born, O joy of the Kurus.'
Verse 36 (padma.1.39.36)
द्वाभ्यां धर्मः स्थितः पद्भ्यामधर्मस्त्रिभिरुत्थितः। विपर्ययशतैर्धर्मः क्षयमेति कलौ युगे।
dvābhyāṁ dharmaḥ sthitaḥ padbhyāmadharmastribhirutthitaḥ viparyayaśatairdharmaḥ kṣayameti kalau yuge
'Dharma stands on two feet, adharma has risen upon three. In the Kali Yuga, dharma comes to ruin through hundreds of reversals.'
Verse 37 (padma.1.39.37)
ब्रह्मण्यभावश्च्यवते तथास्तिक्यं विवर्ज्यते। व्रतोपवासास्त्यज्यंते कलौ वै युगपर्यये।
brahmaṇyabhāvaścyavate tathāstikyaṁ vivarjyate vratopavāsāstyajyaṁte kalau vai yugaparyaye
'Regard for Brahmins declines, and likewise faith is abandoned; vows and fasts are given up, in the Kali, at the turning of the age.'
Verse 38 (padma.1.39.38)
तदा वर्षसहस्रं तु वर्षाणां द्वे शते तथा। यत्राधर्मश्चतुष्पादो धर्मः पादपरिग्रहः।
tadā varṣasahasraṁ tu varṣāṇāṁ dve śate tathā yatrādharmaścatuṣpādo dharmaḥ pādaparigrahaḥ
'Then it is a thousand years, and two hundred years besides; in it adharma stands on four feet, and dharma is reduced to a mere foot.'
Verse 39 (padma.1.39.39)
कामिनस्तापसाः क्षुद्रा जायंते यत्र मानवाः। न चावसायिकः कश्चिन्न साधुर्न च सत्यवाक्।
kāminastāpasāḥ kṣudrā jāyaṁte yatra mānavāḥ na cāvasāyikaḥ kaścinna sādhurna ca satyavāk
'In it, men are born lustful, falsely ascetic, and base; there is no one settled in righteousness, no good man, no speaker of truth.'
Verse 40 (padma.1.39.40)
नास्तिका ब्राह्मणा भक्ता ज्ञायंते तत्र मानवाः। अहंकारगृहीताश्च प्रक्षीणस्नेहबंधनाः।
nāstikā brāhmaṇā bhaktā jñāyaṁte tatra mānavāḥ ahaṁkāragṛhītāśca prakṣīṇasnehabaṁdhanāḥ
'Men there are known to be unbelieving even while professing to be devoted Brahmins; they are seized by egotism, their bonds of affection worn thin.'
Verse 41 (padma.1.39.41)
विप्राः शूद्रसमाचारास्संति सर्वे कलौ युगे। आश्रमाणां विपर्यासः कलौ संप्रति वर्तते।
viprāḥ śūdrasamācārāssaṁti sarve kalau yuge āśramāṇāṁ viparyāsaḥ kalau saṁprati vartate
'In the Kali Yuga, all Brahmins behave like Shudras; in the Kali, at present, there is an inversion of the stages of life.'
Verse 42 (padma.1.39.42)
वर्णानां चैव संदेहो युगांते कुरुनंदन। एषा द्वादशसाहस्री युगाख्या पूर्वनिर्मिता।
varṇānāṁ caiva saṁdeho yugāṁte kurunaṁdana eṣā dvādaśasāhasrī yugākhyā pūrvanirmitā
'And there is confusion of the social classes at the end of the age, O joy of the Kurus. This is the twelve-thousand-year age, called Yuga, fashioned of old.'
Verse 43 (padma.1.39.43)
सहस्रयुगपर्यंतं तदहर्ब्राह्ममुच्यते। ततो ह निगते तस्मिन्सर्वेषामेव जीविनाम्।
sahasrayugaparyaṁtaṁ tadaharbrāhmamucyate tato ha nigate tasminsarveṣāmeva jīvinām
'A thousand such ages make up what is called a Day of Brahma. When that has passed, for all living beings --'
Verse 44 (padma.1.39.44)
शरीरनिर्वृतिं दृष्ट्वा कालः संहारबुद्धिमान्। देवतानां च सर्वेषां ब्राह्मणानां महीपते।
śarīranirvṛtiṁ dṛṣṭvā kālaḥ saṁhārabuddhimān devatānāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ mahīpate
'seeing that their bodies have come to their end, Time, whose intent is destruction, acts upon all the gods and the Brahmins, O king,'
Verse 45 (padma.1.39.45)
दैत्यानां दानवानां च यक्षराक्षसपक्षिणाम्। गंधर्वाणामप्सरसां भुजंगानां च पार्थिव।
daityānāṁ dānavānāṁ ca yakṣarākṣasapakṣiṇām gaṁdharvāṇāmapsarasāṁ bhujaṁgānāṁ ca pārthiva
'upon the Daityas, Danavas, Yakshas, Rakshasas, and birds, upon the Gandharvas, Apsarases, and serpents, O king,'
Verse 46 (padma.1.39.46)
पर्वतानां नदीनां च पशूनां चैव सत्तम। तिर्यग्योनिगतानां च क्रिमीणां दंशिनां तथा।
parvatānāṁ nadīnāṁ ca paśūnāṁ caiva sattama tiryagyonigatānāṁ ca krimīṇāṁ daṁśināṁ tathā
'upon the mountains and rivers, and upon the beasts too, O most excellent one, and upon those of the animal kingdom, upon worms and biting creatures as well.'
Verse 47 (padma.1.39.47)
सर्वभूतपतिः पंच भूत्वा भूतानि भूतकृत्। जगत्संहरणार्थाय कुरुते वैशसं महत्।
sarvabhūtapatiḥ paṁca bhūtvā bhūtāni bhūtakṛt jagatsaṁharaṇārthāya kurute vaiśasaṁ mahat
'The lord of all beings, the maker of beings, having become the five elements, brings about a great slaughter for the purpose of dissolving the world.'
Verse 48 (padma.1.39.48)
भूत्वा सूर्यश्चक्षुषी आददानो भूत्वा वायुः प्राणिनां प्राणिजातम्। भूत्वा वह्निर्निर्दहन्सर्वलोकान्भूत्वा मेघो भूय उग्रोऽभ्यवर्षत्।
bhūtvā sūryaścakṣuṣī ādadāno bhūtvā vāyuḥ prāṇināṁ prāṇijātam bhūtvā vahnirnirdahansarvalokānbhūtvā megho bhūya ugro'bhyavarṣat
'Becoming the sun, he takes away the light of eyes; becoming wind, he takes the vitality of living creatures; becoming fire, he burns up all the worlds; becoming a cloud, he then rains down fiercely,'
Verse 49 (padma.1.39.49)
भूत्वा नारायणो योगी सर्वमूर्ति विभावसुः। गभस्तिभिः प्रदीप्ताभिः संशोषयति सागरान्।
bhūtvā nārāyaṇo yogī sarvamūrti vibhāvasuḥ gabhastibhiḥ pradīptābhiḥ saṁśoṣayati sāgarān
'and becoming that yogin Narayana, of universal form, the radiant one, he dries up the oceans with his blazing rays.'
Verse 50 (padma.1.39.50)
ततः पीत्वार्णवान्सर्वान्नदीकूपांश्च सर्वतः। पर्वतानां च सलिलं सर्वमादाय योगवित्।
tataḥ pītvārṇavānsarvānnadīkūpāṁśca sarvataḥ parvatānāṁ ca salilaṁ sarvamādāya yogavit
'Then, having drunk up all the oceans, and all the rivers and wells everywhere, and having taken away all the water of the mountains, that knower of yoga,'

भूत्वा चैव स हस्तार्चिर्महीं भित्वा रसातले। रमते जलमादाय पिबन्रसमनुत्तमं।
bhūtvā caiva sa hastārcirmahīṁ bhitvā rasātale ramate jalamādāya pibanrasamanuttamaṁ
'becoming one whose very hands are flames, splits open the earth down to the netherworld, and, taking the water, sports there, drinking that unsurpassed essence.'

मूर्त्तामूर्त्ते तदन्यच्च यदस्ति प्राणिषु ध्रुवं। तत्सर्वमरविंदाक्ष आदत्ते पुरुषोत्तमः।
mūrttāmūrtte tadanyacca yadasti prāṇiṣu dhruvaṁ tatsarvamaraviṁdākṣa ādatte puruṣottamaḥ
'Whatever, embodied or unembodied, or other, abides fixed in living beings -- all that the lotus-eyed Purushottama takes back into himself.'
Verse 53 (padma.1.39.53)
वायुश्च बलवान्भूत्वा विधुन्वानोऽखिलं जगत्। प्राणापानं समासाद्य वायुना क्रमते हरिः।
vāyuśca balavānbhūtvā vidhunvāno'khilaṁ jagat prāṇāpānaṁ samāsādya vāyunā kramate hariḥ
'And becoming the mighty wind, shaking the entire world, Hari, having taken up the in-breath and out-breath, moves by means of that wind.'
Verse 54 (padma.1.39.54)
ततो देवगणानां च सर्वेषां चैव देहिनाम्। पंचेंद्रियगुणास्सर्वे भूतान्येव च यानि च।
tato devagaṇānāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ caiva dehinām paṁceṁdriyaguṇāssarve bhūtānyeva ca yāni ca
'Then, of all the hosts of gods and of all embodied beings, all the qualities of the five senses, and whatever elements there are --'

घ्रेयं घ्राणं शरीरं च पृथिवीसंश्रिता गुणाः। लोकयात्रा भगवता मुहूर्तेन विनाशिता।
ghreyaṁ ghrāṇaṁ śarīraṁ ca pṛthivīsaṁśritā guṇāḥ lokayātrā bhagavatā muhūrtena vināśitā
'smell, the sense of smell, and the body -- these qualities, which rest in earth, and the whole course of the world's affairs, are destroyed by the Lord in but a moment.'

जिह्वारसश्च स्नेहश्च संश्रिताः सलिले गुणाः। रूपं चक्षुर्विभागश्च नेत्र ज्योतिः श्रिता गुणाः।
jihvārasaśca snehaśca saṁśritāḥ salile guṇāḥ rūpaṁ cakṣurvibhāgaśca netra jyotiḥ śritā guṇāḥ
'The tongue, taste, and moisture -- these qualities rest in water; form, the faculty of sight, and the light of the eye -- these qualities rest in fire;'
Verse 57 (padma.1.39.57)
स्पर्शः प्राणश्च चेष्टा च पवनं संश्रिता गुणाः। शब्दः श्रोत्रे च श्रवणं गगनं संश्रिता गुणाः।
sparśaḥ prāṇaśca ceṣṭā ca pavanaṁ saṁśritā guṇāḥ śabdaḥ śrotre ca śravaṇaṁ gaganaṁ saṁśritā guṇāḥ
'touch, breath, and movement -- these qualities rest in wind; sound, the faculty of hearing, and hearing itself -- these qualities rest in the sky.'

मनो बुद्धिश्च चित्तं च क्षेत्रज्ञं चेति संश्रिताः। परेण परमेष्ठी च हृषीकेशमुपाश्रिताः।
mano buddhiśca cittaṁ ca kṣetrajñaṁ ceti saṁśritāḥ pareṇa parameṣṭhī ca hṛṣīkeśamupāśritāḥ
'Mind, intellect, and consciousness, together with the knower-of-the-field -- these rest in the higher principle; and beyond that, even the Supreme Being himself rests upon Hrishikesha.'

ततो भगवतस्तस्य रश्मिभिः परिवारिताः। वायुना परिनुन्नाश्च भूमिशाखामुपाश्रिताः।
tato bhagavatastasya raśmibhiḥ parivāritāḥ vāyunā parinunnāśca bhūmiśākhāmupāśritāḥ
'Then, surrounded by the rays of that Lord, and driven onward by the wind, all these, having taken refuge as it were on the branch of the earth,'

तेषां संहरणोद्भूतः पावकः शतधा ज्वलन्। प्रदहन्नखिलं विश्वं वृत्तः संवर्त्तकोऽनलः।
teṣāṁ saṁharaṇodbhūtaḥ pāvakaḥ śatadhā jvalan pradahannakhilaṁ viśvaṁ vṛttaḥ saṁvarttako'nalaḥ
'for their destruction there arises a fire, blazing a hundredfold, burning up the entire universe, the fire called Samvartaka, having come forth,'

सपर्वतद्रुमान्गुल्मान्लतावल्लीस्तृणानि च। विमानानि च दिव्यानि पुराणि विविधानि च।
saparvatadrumāngulmānlatāvallīstṛṇāni ca vimānāni ca divyāni purāṇi vividhāni ca
'consuming the mountains, trees, shrubs, creepers, vines, and grasses, and the divine aerial chariots, and cities of every kind,'

यानि चाश्रयणीयानि सर्वाण्यप्यदहद्भृशम्। भस्मीकृत्य तु तान्सर्वांल्लोकान्ल्लोकगुरोर्गुरुः।
yāni cāśrayaṇīyāni sarvāṇyapyadahadbhṛśam bhasmīkṛtya tu tānsarvāṁllokānllokagurorguruḥ
'and whatever else there is to serve as refuge -- all these it burns fiercely. Having reduced all those worlds to ashes, that guru of the guru of the worlds,'

स भूतिं धारयामास युगांते लोकसंभवाम्। सहस्रवृष्टिः शतधा भूत्वा कृष्णो महाघनः।
sa bhūtiṁ dhārayāmāsa yugāṁte lokasaṁbhavām sahasravṛṣṭiḥ śatadhā bhūtvā kṛṣṇo mahāghanaḥ
'then held forth the potency from which the worlds are born again, at the end of the age; becoming a great black cloud, raining a thousandfold in a hundred streams,'

दिव्यतोयेन हविषा तर्पयामास मेदिनीं। ततः क्षीरनिकाशेन स्वादुना परमांभसा।
divyatoyena haviṣā tarpayāmāsa medinīṁ tataḥ kṣīranikāśena svādunā paramāṁbhasā
'he satisfied the earth with divine water, as if with an oblation; then, with that supremely sweet water, resembling milk,'

शिशिरेण च पुण्येन महीनिर्वाणमागमत्। तेन तोयेन संपृक्ता पयस्साधर्म्यतो धरा।
śiśireṇa ca puṇyena mahīnirvāṇamāgamat tena toyena saṁpṛktā payassādharmyato dharā
'cool and sacred, the earth came to be extinguished; joined with that water, the earth became like milk in its very nature,'

एकार्णावजलीभूता सर्वसत्वविवर्जिता। महासत्वान्यपि विभुं प्रविष्टान्यमितौजसं।
ekārṇāvajalībhūtā sarvasatvavivarjitā mahāsatvānyapi vibhuṁ praviṣṭānyamitaujasaṁ
'having become one great expanse of watery ocean, devoid of all living beings -- even the great beings had entered into that all-pervading, measurelessly powerful one.'

नष्टार्कपवनाकाशे सूक्ष्मे जगति संवृते। संशोषमात्मना कृत्वा समुद्राणां च देहिनः।
naṣṭārkapavanākāśe sūkṣme jagati saṁvṛte saṁśoṣamātmanā kṛtvā samudrāṇāṁ ca dehinaḥ
'With sun, wind, and sky destroyed, the world reduced to a subtle, enveloped state -- having himself brought about the drying-up of the oceans, and of embodied beings --'
Verse 68 (padma.1.39.68)
दग्ध्वा संकोच्य च तथा स्वपित्येकः सनातनः। पौराणं रूपमास्थाय स्वपित्यमितविक्रमः।
dagdhvā saṁkocya ca tathā svapityekaḥ sanātanaḥ paurāṇaṁ rūpamāsthāya svapityamitavikramaḥ
'having burned them and thus withdrawn them into himself, the one eternal being sleeps, taking on his ancient primeval form, that one of measureless valor sleeps.'

एकार्णवजलेयायी योगी योगमुपासितः। अनेकानि सहस्राणि युगान्येकार्णवांभसि।
ekārṇavajaleyāyī yogī yogamupāsitaḥ anekāni sahasrāṇi yugānyekārṇavāṁbhasi
'Moving upon the waters of that single ocean, that yogin, devoted to yoga, remains for many thousands of ages upon the waters of that single ocean --'
Verse 70 (padma.1.39.70)
न चैव कश्चिदव्यक्तं व्यक्तो वेदितुमर्हति। कश्चैष पुरुषो नाम किं योगः कश्च योगवान्।
na caiva kaścidavyaktaṁ vyakto veditumarhati kaścaiṣa puruṣo nāma kiṁ yogaḥ kaśca yogavān
'and no manifest being at all is able to know that unmanifest one -- who indeed is this Person, what is this yoga, and who is this possessor of yoga?'
Verse 71 (padma.1.39.71)
न पृष्ठे नैवमभितो नैव पार्श्वे न चाग्रतः। कश्चिद्विज्ञायते तस्य दृश्यते देवसत्तमः।
na pṛṣṭhe naivamabhito naiva pārśve na cāgrataḥ kaścidvijñāyate tasya dṛśyate devasattamaḥ
'Neither behind, nor all around, nor at the side, nor in front, can that most excellent of gods be known by anyone, or even be seen.'
Verse 72 (padma.1.39.72)
नभः क्षितिं पवनमपः प्रकाशनं प्रजापतिं भुवनधरं सुरेश्वरम्। पितामहं श्रुतिनिलयं मुनिं प्रभुं समापयञ्छयनमरोचयत्प्रभुः।
nabhaḥ kṣitiṁ pavanamapaḥ prakāśanaṁ prajāpatiṁ bhuvanadharaṁ sureśvaram pitāmahaṁ śrutinilayaṁ muniṁ prabhuṁ samāpayañchayanamarocayatprabhuḥ
'That Lord, having drawn together into himself the sky, the earth, the wind, the waters, and light -- Prajapati, the sustainer of the worlds, the lord of gods, the grandsire, the abode of the Vedas, the sage, the master -- chose his resting-place.'

एवमेकार्णवीभूते शेते लोके महाद्युतिः। प्रच्छाद्य सलिलेनोर्वीं हंसो नारायणाय ते।
evamekārṇavībhūte śete loke mahādyutiḥ pracchādya salilenorvīṁ haṁso nārāyaṇāya te
'Thus, when the world had become a single ocean, that being of great splendor slept, having covered the earth with water, the Swan, manifest for Narayana himself --'

महतो रजसो मध्ये महार्णवसमस्य वै। वारिजाक्षो महाबाहुरक्षयं ब्रह्म यद्विदुः।
mahato rajaso madhye mahārṇavasamasya vai vārijākṣo mahābāhurakṣayaṁ brahma yadviduḥ
'in the midst of the great darkness, that is equal to a great ocean; the lotus-eyed one, mighty-armed, whom they know as the imperishable Brahman --'

आत्मरूपसरूपेण तमसा संवृतः प्रभुः। मनः सात्विकमादाय यत्र तत्सत्वमाहितं।
ātmarūpasarūpeṇa tamasā saṁvṛtaḥ prabhuḥ manaḥ sātvikamādāya yatra tatsatvamāhitaṁ
'that Lord, enveloped by darkness that shared in his own very form, taking to himself the mind imbued with sattva, in which that goodness is established --'
Verse 76 (padma.1.39.76)
यथातथ्यं परं ज्ञानं भूताय ब्रह्मणे ततः। रहस्यं च तथोद्दिष्टं यथोपनिषदां स्मृतम्।
yathātathyaṁ paraṁ jñānaṁ bhūtāya brahmaṇe tataḥ rahasyaṁ ca tathoddiṣṭaṁ yathopaniṣadāṁ smṛtam
'the supreme knowledge as it truly is, taught then to Brahma, the first created being; and that mystery was pointed out, as it is remembered in the Upanishads.'
Verse 77 (padma.1.39.77)
पुरुषो यज्ञ इत्येतत्परमं परिकीर्तितम्। यश्चान्यः पुरुषाख्यः स्यात्स एव पुरुषोत्तमः।
puruṣo yajña ityetatparamaṁ parikīrtitam yaścānyaḥ puruṣākhyaḥ syātsa eva puruṣottamaḥ
'"The Person is the sacrifice" -- this supreme teaching is proclaimed. And whoever else might be called "Person" -- he indeed is the Purushottama.'

ये च यज्ञकरा विप्रा ये ॠत्विज इति स्मृताः। अस्मादेव पुरा भूता वक्त्रेभ्यः श्रूयते तथा।
ye ca yajñakarā viprā ye ṝtvija iti smṛtāḥ asmādeva purā bhūtā vaktrebhyaḥ śrūyate tathā
'The Brahmins who perform the sacrifice, remembered as the ritual priests -- they too arose formerly from him alone, from his very mouths, so it is heard.'

ब्रह्माणं प्रथमं वक्त्रादुद्गातारं च सामगं। होतारं च तथाद्ध्वर्युं बाहुभ्यामसृजत्प्रभुः।
brahmāṇaṁ prathamaṁ vaktrādudgātāraṁ ca sāmagaṁ hotāraṁ ca tathāddhvaryuṁ bāhubhyāmasṛjatprabhuḥ
'First, from his mouth, that Lord created the Brahman-priest, and the Udgatri, the chanter of Sama hymns; and from his arms, the Hotri and likewise the Adhvaryu,'

ब्रह्माणं ब्राह्माणाच्छंसि स्तोतारौ चैव सर्वशः। मेढ्राच्च मैत्रावरुणं प्रतिष्ठातारमेव च।
brahmāṇaṁ brāhmāṇācchaṁsi stotārau caiva sarvaśaḥ meḍhrācca maitrāvaruṇaṁ pratiṣṭhātārameva ca
'from the Brahman-priest came the Brahmanacchamsi, and likewise, in every case, the various chanters; and from his generative organ, the Maitravaruna, and likewise the Pratishthatri priest,'

उदरात्प्रतिहर्तारं पोतारं चैव पार्थिव। पाणिभ्यामथ चाग्नीध्रमुन्नेतारं च याजुषम्।
udarātpratihartāraṁ potāraṁ caiva pārthiva pāṇibhyāmatha cāgnīdhramunnetāraṁ ca yājuṣam
'from his belly, the Pratihartri, and likewise the Potri priest, O king; and from his hands, the Agnidhra, and the Unnetri of the Yajus hymns,'

अच्छावाकमथोरुभ्यां सुब्रह्मण्यं च सामगम्। एवमेवं स भगवान्षोडशैतान्जगत्पतिः।
acchāvākamathorubhyāṁ subrahmaṇyaṁ ca sāmagam evamevaṁ sa bhagavānṣoḍaśaitānjagatpatiḥ
'the Acchavaka, and from his thighs, the Subrahmanya, the chanter of Sama -- thus, thus that Lord, the master of the universe,'

स्वयंभूः सर्वयज्ञानामृत्विजोऽसृजदुत्तमान्। तदा चैष महायोगी पुरुषो यज्ञसंज्ञितः।
svayaṁbhūḥ sarvayajñānāmṛtvijo'sṛjaduttamān tadā caiṣa mahāyogī puruṣo yajñasaṁjñitaḥ
'the Self-Existent, created these sixteen supreme ritual priests of all sacrifices. Then this great yogin, the Person called Sacrifice,'

वेदाश्चैव तथा सर्वे सहांगोपनिषत्क्रियाः। स्वपित्येकार्णवे चैव यदाश्चर्यमभूत्पुरा।
vedāścaiva tathā sarve sahāṁgopaniṣatkriyāḥ svapityekārṇave caiva yadāścaryamabhūtpurā
'and likewise all the Vedas, together with their limbs and Upanishads and rites, sleeps upon that single ocean; and a wonder occurred there formerly.'

श्रूयतां तु तदा विप्रो मार्कंडेयः कुतूहलात्। गीर्णो भगवता तेन कुक्षावासीन्महामुनिः।
śrūyatāṁ tu tadā vipro mārkaṁḍeyaḥ kutūhalāt gīrṇo bhagavatā tena kukṣāvāsīnmahāmuniḥ
'Hear now: at that time the Brahmin Markandeya, out of curiosity, was swallowed by that Lord, and the great sage came to dwell in his belly.'

बहुवर्षसहस्रायुस्तस्यैव वरतेजसः। अटंस्तीर्थप्रसंगेन पृथिवीतीर्थगोचरः।
bahuvarṣasahasrāyustasyaiva varatejasaḥ aṭaṁstīrthaprasaṁgena pṛthivītīrthagocaraḥ
'That sage, of many thousands of years' life, of excellent splendor, wandering for the sake of pilgrimage, ranging over the sacred fords of the earth,'

आश्रमाणि च पुण्यानि देवतायतनानि च। देशाद्राष्ट्राणि चित्राणि पुराणि विविधानि च।
āśramāṇi ca puṇyāni devatāyatanāni ca deśādrāṣṭrāṇi citrāṇi purāṇi vividhāni ca
'had seen sacred hermitages, and temples of the gods, and wondrous lands and kingdoms, and cities of every kind,'

जपहोमपराः शांतास्तपोभिरमलाः स्मृताः। मार्कंडेयस्ततस्तस्य शनैर्वक्त्राद्विनिर्गतः।
japahomaparāḥ śāṁtāstapobhiramalāḥ smṛtāḥ mārkaṁḍeyastatastasya śanairvaktrādvinirgataḥ
'full of peaceful ones devoted to recitation and fire-offerings, remembered as pure through their austerities. Markandeya then slowly emerged from that Lord's mouth,'

निष्क्रामन्तं न चात्मानं जानीते देवमायया। निष्क्रम्य तस्य उदरादेकार्णवमथो जगत्।
niṣkrāmantaṁ na cātmānaṁ jānīte devamāyayā niṣkramya tasya udarādekārṇavamatho jagat
'not even knowing, through the god's maya, that he himself was emerging. Having emerged from his belly, he saw the world now become a single ocean,'
Verse 90 (padma.1.39.90)
सर्वतस्तमसाछन्नं मार्कंडेयोन्ववैक्षत। तस्योत्पन्नं भयं तीव्रं व्यत्ययं चात्मजीवितम्।
sarvatastamasāchannaṁ mārkaṁḍeyonvavaikṣata tasyotpannaṁ bhayaṁ tīvraṁ vyatyayaṁ cātmajīvitam
'covered on every side with darkness -- Markandeya looked upon it. Intense fear arose in him, and he thought his own life had been overturned.'

देवदर्शनसंहृष्टो विस्मयं परमं गतः। सोऽचिंतयदमोघात्मा मार्कंडेयोथ शंकितः।
devadarśanasaṁhṛṣṭo vismayaṁ paramaṁ gataḥ so'ciṁtayadamoghātmā mārkaṁḍeyotha śaṁkitaḥ
'Delighted at the sight of the god, he was overcome with the utmost astonishment. That Markandeya, of unfailing soul, then reflected, in doubt:'

किं नु स्याच्चित्तसंमोहः किं नु स्वप्नोनुभूयते। व्यक्तमन्यतरो भाव एतयोर्भविता मम।
kiṁ nu syāccittasaṁmohaḥ kiṁ nu svapnonubhūyate vyaktamanyataro bhāva etayorbhavitā mama
'"What can this be -- is it a delusion of the mind, or is it a dream being experienced? Clearly, one or the other of these two states must be mine."'

न हि स्वप्नो ह्ययं सत्ययुक्तं यत्सत्यमर्हति। नष्टचंद्रार्कपवनो नष्टपर्वतभूतलः।
na hi svapno hyayaṁ satyayuktaṁ yatsatyamarhati naṣṭacaṁdrārkapavano naṣṭaparvatabhūtalaḥ
'"Yet this cannot be a dream, for what is real deserves to be called real. Here the moon, sun, and wind are gone; the mountains and the surface of the earth are gone;"'

कतमः स्यादयं लोक इति शोकमुपागतः। ददर्श चापि पुरुषं स्वपंतं पर्वतोपमम्।
katamaḥ syādayaṁ loka iti śokamupāgataḥ dadarśa cāpi puruṣaṁ svapaṁtaṁ parvatopamam
'"what world, then, can this be?" -- thus he fell into grief. And then he saw a Person sleeping there, like a mountain,'

सलिलेऽधमथो मग्नं जीमूतमिव सागरे। तपंतमिव तेजोभिरामुक्तशशिभास्करम्।
salile'dhamatho magnaṁ jīmūtamiva sāgare tapaṁtamiva tejobhirāmuktaśaśibhāskaram
'sunk low in the water, like a rain-cloud in the ocean, as if blazing with splendor, though moon and sun were absent,'

गांभीर्यात्सागरमिव भासमानम्मवौजसा। देवं द्रष्टुमिहायातः को भवानिति विस्मयात्।
gāṁbhīryātsāgaramiva bhāsamānammavaujasā devaṁ draṣṭumihāyātaḥ ko bhavāniti vismayāt
'shining with his own power, deep as the ocean itself -- and Markandeya said, "I have come here to see who this god is -- who are you?" -- out of astonishment.'

तथैव च मुनिः कुक्षिं पुनरेव प्रवेशितः। संप्रविष्टः पुनः कुक्षिं मार्कंडेयः सविस्मयम्।
tathaiva ca muniḥ kukṣiṁ punareva praveśitaḥ saṁpraviṣṭaḥ punaḥ kukṣiṁ mārkaṁḍeyaḥ savismayam
And just then the sage was made to enter that belly again; Markandeya re-entered that belly, filled with astonishment.

तथैव च पुनर्भूयो विजानन्स्वप्नदर्शनम्। स तथैव यथापूर्वं पृथिवीमटते वनम्।
tathaiva ca punarbhūyo vijānansvapnadarśanam sa tathaiva yathāpūrvaṁ pṛthivīmaṭate vanam
And once again, thinking it a dream-vision, he, just as before, wandered over the earth and its forests,

पुण्यतीर्थजलोपेतं विविधान्याश्रमाणि च। क्रतुभिर्यजमानांश्च समाप्तगुरुदक्षिणैः।
puṇyatīrthajalopetaṁ vividhānyāśramāṇi ca kratubhiryajamānāṁśca samāptagurudakṣiṇaiḥ
seeing it furnished with sacred fords and waters, and its various hermitages, and sacrificers performing rites, their teacher's fees duly completed,

अपश्यद्देवकुक्षिस्थान्यज्ञस्थान्शतशो द्विजान्। सद्वृत्तमाश्रिताः सर्वे वर्णा ब्राह्मणपूर्वकाः।
apaśyaddevakukṣisthānyajñasthānśataśo dvijān sadvṛttamāśritāḥ sarve varṇā brāhmaṇapūrvakāḥ
he saw, while in truth still within the god's belly, hundreds of twice-born ones engaged in sacrifice; all the classes, headed by the Brahmins, devoted to good conduct,
Verse 101 (padma.1.39.101)
चत्वार आश्रमाः सम्यग्यथापूर्वं विलोकिता। एवं वर्षशतं साग्रं मार्कंडेयेन धीमता।
catvāra āśramāḥ samyagyathāpūrvaṁ vilokitā evaṁ varṣaśataṁ sāgraṁ mārkaṁḍeyena dhīmatā
and the four stages of life, all rightly observed as before. Thus, for a hundred years and more, the wise Markandeya,
Verse 102 (padma.1.39.102)
चरता पृथिवी सर्वा तत्कुक्षौ हि समीक्ष्यते। ततः कदाचिदथ वै पुनः कुक्षेर्विनिर्गतः।
caratā pṛthivī sarvā tatkukṣau hi samīkṣyate tataḥ kadācidatha vai punaḥ kukṣervinirgataḥ
wandering, beheld the entire earth -- all within that very belly. Then, at some point, he emerged once more from that belly,

सुप्तं न्यग्रोधशाखाय ांबालमेकं निरीक्ष्य च। तथैवैकार्णवजले नीहारेणावृतांतरे।
suptaṁ nyagrodhaśākhāya āṁbālamekaṁ nirīkṣya ca tathaivaikārṇavajale nīhāreṇāvṛtāṁtare
and saw a single child asleep on the branch of a banyan tree, likewise in the midst of that single ocean, its interior shrouded in mist,
Verse 104 (padma.1.39.104)
अव्यक्तक्रीडिते लोके सर्वभूतविवर्जिते। स मुनिर्विस्मयाविष्टः कौतूहलसमन्वितः।
avyaktakrīḍite loke sarvabhūtavivarjite sa munirvismayāviṣṭaḥ kautūhalasamanvitaḥ
a world in which the unmanifest played, empty of all beings. That sage, seized by astonishment and filled with curiosity,
Verse 105 (padma.1.39.105)
बालमादित्यसंकाशं न शक्नोत्यभिवीक्षितुम्। सोप्यचिंतयदेकांते स्थित्वा सलिलसन्निधौ।
bālamādityasaṁkāśaṁ na śaknotyabhivīkṣitum sopyaciṁtayadekāṁte sthitvā salilasannidhau
could not manage to gaze fully upon that child, radiant like the sun. Standing apart, near the water, he too reflected:
Verse 106 (padma.1.39.106)
पूर्वदृष्टमिदं मेने शंकितो देवमायया। अगाधे सलिले शेते मार्कंडेयः सविस्मयः।
pūrvadṛṣṭamidaṁ mene śaṁkito devamāyayā agādhe salile śete mārkaṁḍeyaḥ savismayaḥ
'"This I take to be what I saw before"' -- doubting, through the god's maya, Markandeya, filled with wonder, beheld the child sleeping upon the fathomless water.
Verse 107 (padma.1.39.107)
पूर्ववत्तमथो द्रष्टुमव्रजत्त्रस्तलोचनः। स तस्मै भगवानाह स्वागतो बाल भो इति।
pūrvavattamatho draṣṭumavrajattrastalocanaḥ sa tasmai bhagavānāha svāgato bāla bho iti
As before, he went to look upon him, his eyes trembling with fear. And that Lord said to him: 'Welcome, O sage!'
Verse 108 (padma.1.39.108)
बभाषे मेघतुल्येन स्वरेण पुरुषोत्तमः। मार्कंडेय न भेतव्यमागच्छस्व ममांतिकम्।
babhāṣe meghatulyena svareṇa puruṣottamaḥ mārkaṁḍeya na bhetavyamāgacchasva mamāṁtikam
The Purushottama spoke with a voice like thunder-clouds: 'Markandeya, you need not fear; come into my presence.'
Verse 109 (padma.1.39.109)
मार्कंडेय उवाच। को नाम्ना कीर्तयति मां कुर्वन्परिभवं मम। दिव्यवर्षसहस्राख्यं धर्षयंश्चैव मे वयः।
mārkaṁḍeya uvāca ko nāmnā kīrtayati māṁ kurvanparibhavaṁ mama divyavarṣasahasrākhyaṁ dharṣayaṁścaiva me vayaḥ
Markandeya said: 'Who is this that names me, treating me with disrespect, insulting my age, reckoned in thousands of divine years?'
Verse 110 (padma.1.39.110)
न ह्येष च सदाचारो देवेष्वपि ममोचितः। मां ब्रह्मापि हि सस्नेहो दीर्घायुरिति भाषते।
na hyeṣa ca sadācāro deveṣvapi mamocitaḥ māṁ brahmāpi hi sasneho dīrghāyuriti bhāṣate
'This is not proper conduct, not fitting for me even among the gods; even Brahma himself, with affection, calls me "Long-lived one."'
Verse 111 (padma.1.39.111)
कस्तपोघोरमासाद्य ममाद्य त्यक्तजीवितः। मार्कंडेयेति मामुक्त्वा मृत्युमीक्षितुमर्हसि।
kastapoghoramāsādya mamādya tyaktajīvitaḥ mārkaṁḍeyeti māmuktvā mṛtyumīkṣitumarhasi
'Who, having attained a terrible power through austerity, has today abandoned his own life, that he calls me "Markandeya" so casually? You deserve to face death for this!'
Verse 112 (padma.1.39.112)
एवं प्रक्षुभितः क्रोधान्मार्कंडेयो महामुनिः। तदैनं भगवान्भूयो बभाषे मधुसूदनः।
evaṁ prakṣubhitaḥ krodhānmārkaṁḍeyo mahāmuniḥ tadainaṁ bhagavānbhūyo babhāṣe madhusūdanaḥ
Thus agitated with anger, the great sage Markandeya spoke; and then the Lord Madhusudana spoke to him again:
Verse 113 (padma.1.39.113)
श्रीभगवानुवाच। अहं ते जनको वत्स हृषीकेशः पिता गुरुः। आयुः प्रदाता पौराणः किं मां त्वं नोपसर्पसि।
śrībhagavānuvāca ahaṁ te janako vatsa hṛṣīkeśaḥ pitā guruḥ āyuḥ pradātā paurāṇaḥ kiṁ māṁ tvaṁ nopasarpasi
The blessed Lord said: 'I am your father, my child; I, Hrishikesha, am your father and guru; the primeval giver of life. Why do you not approach me?'
Verse 114 (padma.1.39.114)
मां पुत्रकामः प्रथमं त्वत्पितांगिरसो मुनिः। पूर्वमाराधयामास तपस्तीव्रं समाश्रितः।
māṁ putrakāmaḥ prathamaṁ tvatpitāṁgiraso muniḥ pūrvamārādhayāmāsa tapastīvraṁ samāśritaḥ
'Long ago your father, the sage Angiras, desiring a son, worshipped me, having taken up fierce austerity.'
Verse 115 (padma.1.39.115)
तं दृष्ट्वा घोरतपसं त्रिदशोत्तमतेजसम्। दत्तवांस्त्वामहं पुत्रं महर्षिममितौजसम्।
taṁ dṛṣṭvā ghoratapasaṁ tridaśottamatejasam dattavāṁstvāmahaṁ putraṁ maharṣimamitaujasam
'Seeing him, engaged in terrible austerity, of splendor surpassing even the gods, I gave you to him as a son, a great sage of measureless power.'
Verse 116 (padma.1.39.116)
कस्समुत्सहते चान्यो योगिभूतात्मगात्मकम्। द्रष्टुमेकार्णवगतं क्रीडंतं योगमायया।
kassamutsahate cānyo yogibhūtātmagātmakam draṣṭumekārṇavagataṁ krīḍaṁtaṁ yogamāyayā
'What other being could dare to see me, gone to that single ocean, playing there through my yogic power, whose very self is composed of the elements of yoga?'
Verse 117 (padma.1.39.117)
ततः प्रहृष्टहृदयो विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनः। मूर्ध्नि बद्धांजलिपुटो मार्कंडेयो माहातपाः।
tataḥ prahṛṣṭahṛdayo vismayotphullalocanaḥ mūrdhni baddhāṁjalipuṭo mārkaṁḍeyo māhātapāḥ
Then, his heart filled with joy, his eyes wide with wonder, Markandeya, of great austerity, with joined palms raised to his head,
Verse 118 (padma.1.39.118)
नामगोत्रे तु संप्रोच्य दीर्घायुर्लोकपूजितः। तस्मै भगवते भक्त्या नमस्कारमथाकरोत्।
nāmagotre tu saṁprocya dīrghāyurlokapūjitaḥ tasmai bhagavate bhaktyā namaskāramathākarot
having declared his name and lineage -- that long-lived one, honored by the world -- made obeisance to that Lord with devotion.
Verse 119 (padma.1.39.119)
मार्कंडेय उवाच। इच्छामि तत्त्वतो ज्ञातुमिमां मायां तवानघ। यदेकार्णवमध्यस्थः शेषे त्वं बालरूपवान्।
mārkaṁḍeya uvāca icchāmi tattvato jñātumimāṁ māyāṁ tavānagha yadekārṇavamadhyasthaḥ śeṣe tvaṁ bālarūpavān
Markandeya said: 'I wish to know truly this maya of yours, O sinless one -- how it is that, situated in the midst of this single ocean, you rest here in the form of a child.'
Verse 120 (padma.1.39.120)
किं संज्ञश्चैव भगवान्लोके विज्ञायसे प्रभो। तर्कयेहं महात्मानं को ह्यन्यः स्थातुमर्हसि।
kiṁ saṁjñaścaiva bhagavānloke vijñāyase prabho tarkayehaṁ mahātmānaṁ ko hyanyaḥ sthātumarhasi
'And by what name, my lord, are you known in the world? Let me reason it out, O great soul -- for who else could exist thus?'
Verse 121 (padma.1.39.121)
श्रीभगवानुवाच। अहं नारायणो ब्रह्मन्सर्वभूतविनाशनः। अहं सहस्रशीर्षास्यः सहस्रपदसंयुतः।
śrībhagavānuvāca ahaṁ nārāyaṇo brahmansarvabhūtavināśanaḥ ahaṁ sahasraśīrṣāsyaḥ sahasrapadasaṁyutaḥ
The blessed Lord said: 'I am Narayana, O Brahmin, the destroyer of all beings. I am he of a thousand heads and faces, endowed with a thousand feet.'
Verse 122 (padma.1.39.122)
आदित्यवर्णः पुरुषो मुखे ब्रह्ममयो ह्यहम्। अहमग्निर्हव्यवहः सप्तसप्तिभिरन्वितः।
ādityavarṇaḥ puruṣo mukhe brahmamayo hyaham ahamagnirhavyavahaḥ saptasaptibhiranvitaḥ
'I am the Person of the color of the sun; I am, in my face, composed of Brahman itself. I am Agni, the carrier of oblations, accompanied by the seven horses.'
Verse 123 (padma.1.39.123)
अहमिंद्रपदः शक्र ॠतूनां परिवत्सरः। अहं योगिषु सांख्याख्यो युगांतावर्त एव च।
ahamiṁdrapadaḥ śakra ṝtūnāṁ parivatsaraḥ ahaṁ yogiṣu sāṁkhyākhyo yugāṁtāvarta eva ca
'I am the office of Indra, I am Shakra; I am the completing year of the seasons. Among yogins I am called Sankhya, and I am also the recurrence at the end of the ages.'
Verse 124 (padma.1.39.124)
अहं सर्वाणि सत्वानि दैवतान्यखिलानि च। भुजगानामहं शेषस्तार्क्ष्योऽहं सर्वपक्षिणाम्।
ahaṁ sarvāṇi satvāni daivatānyakhilāni ca bhujagānāmahaṁ śeṣastārkṣyo'haṁ sarvapakṣiṇām
'I am all beings, and all the deities as well. Among serpents I am Shesha, and among all birds I am Garuda.'
Verse 125 (padma.1.39.125)
कृतांतः सर्वभूतानां विज्ञेयः कालसंज्ञितः। अहं धर्मस्तपश्चाहं सर्वाश्रमनिवासिनाम्।
kṛtāṁtaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ vijñeyaḥ kālasaṁjñitaḥ ahaṁ dharmastapaścāhaṁ sarvāśramanivāsinām
'I am to be known as the ender of all beings, called Time. I am dharma, and I am the austerity of all those who dwell in the stages of life.'
Verse 126 (padma.1.39.126)
अहं दया परोधर्मः क्षीरोदोहं महार्णवः। यत्सत्यं तत्परं त्वेक अहमेव प्रजापतिः।
ahaṁ dayā parodharmaḥ kṣīrodohaṁ mahārṇavaḥ yatsatyaṁ tatparaṁ tveka ahameva prajāpatiḥ
'I am compassion, the highest dharma; I am the great ocean of milk. Whatever is true and supreme -- I alone am that, I am Prajapati himself.'
Verse 127 (padma.1.39.127)
अहं सांख्यमहं योगो ह्यहं तत्परमं पदम्। अहमिज्या क्रिया चाहमहं विद्याधिपः स्मृतः।
ahaṁ sāṁkhyamahaṁ yogo hyahaṁ tatparamaṁ padam ahamijyā kriyā cāhamahaṁ vidyādhipaḥ smṛtaḥ
'I am Sankhya, I am Yoga, I am that supreme state. I am sacrifice, I am ritual action; I am remembered as the lord of knowledge.'
Verse 128 (padma.1.39.128)
अहं ज्योतिरहं वायुरहं भूमिरहं जलम्। आकाशोहं समुद्राश्च नक्षत्राणि दिशो दश।
ahaṁ jyotirahaṁ vāyurahaṁ bhūmirahaṁ jalam ākāśohaṁ samudrāśca nakṣatrāṇi diśo daśa
'I am light, I am wind, I am earth, I am water. I am the sky and the oceans, the stars and the ten directions.'
Verse 129 (padma.1.39.129)
अहं वर्षमहं सोमः पर्जन्योहमहं रविः। अहं पुराणं परमं तथैवाहं परायणम्।
ahaṁ varṣamahaṁ somaḥ parjanyohamahaṁ raviḥ ahaṁ purāṇaṁ paramaṁ tathaivāhaṁ parāyaṇam
'I am the rain, I am Soma, I am the rain-god Parjanya, and I am the sun. I am the supreme ancient one, and likewise I am the final refuge.'
Verse 130 (padma.1.39.130)
भविष्ये चापि सर्वत्र भविष्यत्सर्वसंग्रहः। यत्किंचित्पश्यसे विप्र यच्छृणोषि च किंचन।
bhaviṣye cāpi sarvatra bhaviṣyatsarvasaṁgrahaḥ yatkiṁcitpaśyase vipra yacchṛṇoṣi ca kiṁcana
'I shall also be, everywhere, the sum of all that is to come. Whatever you see, O Brahmin, and whatever you hear,'
Verse 131 (padma.1.39.131)
यच्चानुभवसे लोके तत्सर्वं मामनुस्मर। विश्वं सृष्टं मया पूर्वं सृजेद्यापि च पश्य माम्।
yaccānubhavase loke tatsarvaṁ māmanusmara viśvaṁ sṛṣṭaṁ mayā pūrvaṁ sṛjedyāpi ca paśya mām
'and whatever you experience in the world -- remember all of that as me. The universe was created by me formerly, and is being created even now; behold me in it.'
Verse 132 (padma.1.39.132)
युगे युगे च रक्षामि मार्कंडेयाखिलं जगत्। तदेतत्कथितं सर्वं मार्कंडेयावधारय।
yuge yuge ca rakṣāmi mārkaṁḍeyākhilaṁ jagat tadetatkathitaṁ sarvaṁ mārkaṁḍeyāvadhāraya
'And in age after age I protect the entire world, O Markandeya. All this has now been told; grasp it well, Markandeya.'
Verse 133 (padma.1.39.133)
शुश्रूषुरपि धर्मेषु कुक्षौ चरसुखं मम। मम ब्रह्मा शरीरस्थो देवाश्च ॠषिभिः सह।
śuśrūṣurapi dharmeṣu kukṣau carasukhaṁ mama mama brahmā śarīrastho devāśca ṝṣibhiḥ saha
'You, eager to serve dharma, wandered happily within my very belly; Brahma dwells within my body, and the gods together with the sages,'
Verse 134 (padma.1.39.134)
व्यक्तमव्यक्तयोगं मामवगच्छ मुरद्विषम्। अहमेकाक्षरो मंत्रस्त्र्यक्षरश्च पितामहः।
vyaktamavyaktayogaṁ māmavagaccha muradviṣam ahamekākṣaro maṁtrastryakṣaraśca pitāmahaḥ
'understand me as the union of manifest and unmanifest, the enemy of Mura. I am the one-syllabled mantra, and I am the three-syllabled Grandsire,'
Verse 135 (padma.1.39.135)
परस्त्रिवर्गओंकारः परमात्मप्रदर्शनः। एवमादिपुराणं च वदतेमां महामते।
parastrivargaoṁkāraḥ paramātmapradarśanaḥ evamādipurāṇaṁ ca vadatemāṁ mahāmate
'beyond the three aims of life, the syllable Om, the revealer of the supreme self.' Thus this ancient account is told to you, O great-minded one.
Verse 136 (padma.1.39.136)
वक्त्रं यातो भगवतो मार्कंडेयो महामुनिः। ततो भगवतः कुक्षिं प्रविष्टो मुनिसत्तमः।
vaktraṁ yāto bhagavato mārkaṁḍeyo mahāmuniḥ tato bhagavataḥ kukṣiṁ praviṣṭo munisattamaḥ
The great sage Markandeya then went into the mouth of that Lord; and that most excellent of sages entered the Lord's belly once more,
Verse 137 (padma.1.39.137)
तस्यासम्मुखमेकान्ते शुश्रूषुर्हंसमव्ययम्। यदक्षयं विविधमुपाश्रितं तु तन्महार्णवे व्यपगतचंद्रभास्करे।
tasyāsammukhamekānte śuśrūṣurhaṁsamavyayam yadakṣayaṁ vividhamupāśritaṁ tu tanmahārṇave vyapagatacaṁdrabhāskare
remaining apart, facing him, eager to serve that imperishable Swan -- that indestructible one, resorted to in various forms, in that great ocean from which moon and sun had departed.
Verse 138 (padma.1.39.138)
शनैश्चरन्प्रभुरथ हंससंज्ञितः सृजन्जगद्विहरति कालपर्यये। अथ चैवं शुचिर्भूत्वा वरयामास वै तपः।
śanaiścaranprabhuratha haṁsasaṁjñitaḥ sṛjanjagadviharati kālaparyaye atha caivaṁ śucirbhūtvā varayāmāsa vai tapaḥ
That Lord, moving slowly, called the Swan, sporting there, creating the world in the course of time -- and then, having become pure, he chose to undertake austerity.
Verse 139 (padma.1.39.139)
छादयित्वात्मनो देहं पयसांबुजसंभवः। ततो महात्मातिबलो मर्त्यलोकविसर्जने।
chādayitvātmano dehaṁ payasāṁbujasaṁbhavaḥ tato mahātmātibalo martyalokavisarjane
Concealing his own body in the waters, that lotus-born being then -- that great, exceedingly powerful soul, for the sake of releasing the world of mortals,
Verse 140 (padma.1.39.140)
महतां चैव भूतानां विश्वो विश्वमचिंतयत्। तस्य चिंतयमानस्य नियते संस्थितेर्णवे।
mahatāṁ caiva bhūtānāṁ viśvo viśvamaciṁtayat tasya ciṁtayamānasya niyate saṁsthiterṇave
that all-pervading one, thought upon the universe, and upon the great elements and beings. As he was thus reflecting, fixed in that steady ocean,
Verse 141 (padma.1.39.141)
निराकाशे तोयमये सूक्ष्मे जगति संक्षये। ईशः संक्षोभयामास सोर्णवं सलिलं गतः।
nirākāśe toyamaye sūkṣme jagati saṁkṣaye īśaḥ saṁkṣobhayāmāsa sorṇavaṁ salilaṁ gataḥ
in the world reduced to subtlety, without sky, made only of water, in that state of dissolution, the Lord, having entered those waters, set that ocean into motion.
Verse 142 (padma.1.39.142)
अथांतरादपां सूक्ष्ममथ च्छिद्रमभूत्पुरा। शब्दं प्रति ततो भूतो मारुतश्छिद्रसंभवः।
athāṁtarādapāṁ sūkṣmamatha cchidramabhūtpurā śabdaṁ prati tato bhūto mārutaśchidrasaṁbhavaḥ
Then, from within the subtlety of the waters, a hollow space arose; and then, in response to sound, the wind was born, arising from that hollow.
Verse 143 (padma.1.39.143)
संलब्ध्वांतरसंक्षोभं व्यवर्धत समीरणः। नभस्वता बलवता वेगाद्विक्षोभितोर्णवः।
saṁlabdhvāṁtarasaṁkṣobhaṁ vyavardhata samīraṇaḥ nabhasvatā balavatā vegādvikṣobhitorṇavaḥ
Having gained that inner agitation, the wind grew; and by that powerful, wind-bearing force, the ocean was violently churned.
Verse 144 (padma.1.39.144)
तस्यार्णवस्य क्षुब्धस्य तस्मिन्नंभसि मथ्यतः। कृष्णवर्त्मा समभवत्प्रभुर्वैश्वानरो महान्।
tasyārṇavasya kṣubdhasya tasminnaṁbhasi mathyataḥ kṛṣṇavartmā samabhavatprabhurvaiśvānaro mahān
As that ocean was thus agitated, and as that water was being churned, the great and mighty fire, Vaishvanara, whose path is dark, came into being.
Verse 145 (padma.1.39.145)
ततः संशोषयामास पावकः सलिलं बहु। समस्तजलधिश्छिद्रमभवद्विसृतं नभः।
tataḥ saṁśoṣayāmāsa pāvakaḥ salilaṁ bahu samastajaladhiśchidramabhavadvisṛtaṁ nabhaḥ
Then that fire dried up much of the water; the entire ocean became a hollow space, and the sky spread forth.
Verse 146 (padma.1.39.146)
आत्मतेजोभवाः पुण्या आपोमृतरसोपमाः। आकाशं छिद्रसंभूतं वायुराकाशसंभवः।
ātmatejobhavāḥ puṇyā āpomṛtarasopamāḥ ākāśaṁ chidrasaṁbhūtaṁ vāyurākāśasaṁbhavaḥ
The waters, sacred and born of his own splendor, resembling the essence of nectar, remained; the sky arose from that hollow, and the wind arose from the sky.
Verse 147 (padma.1.39.147)
अथ संघर्षसम्भूतं पावकं चास्य संभवम्। दृष्ट्वा पितामहो देवो महाभूतविभावनः।
atha saṁgharṣasambhūtaṁ pāvakaṁ cāsya saṁbhavam dṛṣṭvā pitāmaho devo mahābhūtavibhāvanaḥ
Then, seeing that fire born of friction, and its very origin, the god and Grandsire, the one who brings the great elements into being,
Verse 148 (padma.1.39.148)
दृष्ट्वा भूतानि भगवान्लोकसृष्ट्यर्थमुत्तमम्। ब्रह्मणो जन्मसहितं बहुरूपो ह्यचिंतयत्।
dṛṣṭvā bhūtāni bhagavānlokasṛṣṭyarthamuttamam brahmaṇo janmasahitaṁ bahurūpo hyaciṁtayat
that Lord, having seen the elements, for the supreme purpose of creating the worlds, being of many forms, thought upon the birth of Brahma as well.
Verse 149 (padma.1.39.149)
चतुर्युगानां संख्यातं सहस्रं युगपर्यये। यत्पृथिव्यां द्विजेंद्राणां तपसा भावितात्मनाम्।
caturyugānāṁ saṁkhyātaṁ sahasraṁ yugaparyaye yatpṛthivyāṁ dvijeṁdrāṇāṁ tapasā bhāvitātmanām
A thousand cycles of the four ages, reckoned, make up the turning of the great age; in that time the foremost of the twice-born on earth, whose souls are purified by austerity,

बहुजन्मविशुद्धात्मा ब्रह्मणो हरिरुच्यते। ज्ञानं दृष्ट्वा तु विश्वात्मा योगिनां याति योग्यताम्।
bahujanmaviśuddhātmā brahmaṇo harirucyate jñānaṁ dṛṣṭvā tu viśvātmā yogināṁ yāti yogyatām
attain a state where the soul, purified through many births, is said to become Hari's own nature, that of Brahma. Having beheld true knowledge, that soul-of-the-universe attains the state fit for yogins.
Verse 151 (padma.1.39.151)
तं योगवंतं विज्ञाय संपूर्णैश्वर्यमुत्तमम्। पदे ब्रह्मणि विश्वस्य न्ययोजयत योगवित्।
taṁ yogavaṁtaṁ vijñāya saṁpūrṇaiśvaryamuttamam pade brahmaṇi viśvasya nyayojayata yogavit
Recognizing him as possessed of yoga, endowed with the fullness of supreme lordship, that knower of yoga established him in the station of Brahma, over the universe.
Verse 152 (padma.1.39.152)
ततस्तस्मिन्महातोये महेशो हरिरच्युतः। जलक्रीडां च विधिवत्स चक्रे सर्वलोककृत्।
tatastasminmahātoye maheśo hariracyutaḥ jalakrīḍāṁ ca vidhivatsa cakre sarvalokakṛt
Then, in that great expanse of water, Hari, the great lord, the unfallen one, the maker of all worlds, duly engaged in water-sport.
Verse 153 (padma.1.39.153)
पद्मं नाभ्युद्भवं चैकं समुत्पादितवांस्ततः। सहस्त्रवर्णं विरजं भास्कराभं हिरण्मयम्।
padmaṁ nābhyudbhavaṁ caikaṁ samutpāditavāṁstataḥ sahastravarṇaṁ virajaṁ bhāskarābhaṁ hiraṇmayam
He then brought forth a single lotus, arisen from his navel, of a thousand petals, spotless, radiant as the sun, made of gold,
Verse 154 (padma.1.39.154)
हुताशनज्वलितशिखोज्जवलप्रभं समुत्थितं शरदमलार्कतेजसम्। विराजते कमलमुदारवर्चसं महात्मनस्तनुरुह चारुशैवलम्।
hutāśanajvalitaśikhojjavalaprabhaṁ samutthitaṁ śaradamalārkatejasam virājate kamalamudāravarcasaṁ mahātmanastanuruha cāruśaivalam
blazing bright like the flame-tips of a kindled fire, arisen, of the splendor of a spotless autumn sun -- that lotus of noble radiance shines forth, grown from the body of the great soul, beautiful as fresh moss upon the water.
