Narayana, the Brahman, formed his two arms through his own maya. Then those two, mighty-armed, being drawn by his arms,

Verse 40 (padma.1.40.40)

moved about, exhausted, like two great birds. Then those two went and addressed the eternal Vasudeva:

Verse 41 (padma.1.40.41)

padmanābhaṁ hṛṣīkeśaṁ praṇipatya natāvubhau jānīvastvāṁ viśvayoniṁ tvāmekaṁ puruṣottamam

bowing to lotus-naveled Hrishikesha, both of them bent low: 'We know you, the womb of the universe, you, the one Purushottama,'

Verse 42 (padma.1.40.42)

āvayoścaiva hetuṁ tvāṁ jānantau buddhikāraṇam amoghadarśanaṁ satyaṁ yatastvāṁ vidva(?)śāśvatam

'knowing you to be the cause of us both, the source of our understanding; knowing that your sight is never fruitless and true, since you are known as the eternal one,'

Verse 43 (padma.1.40.43)

śrībhagavānuvāca kimarthaṁ māmanubrūtha yuvāmasurasattamau gatāyuṣkau yuvāṁ bhūyastvaho jīvitumicchathaḥ

The blessed Lord said: 'Why do you two, foremost of Asuras, address me thus? Your lifespans are exhausted -- and yet, alas, do you still wish to live longer?'

Verse 45 (padma.1.40.45)

madhukaiṭabhā ūcatuḥ yasminna kaścinmṛtavāndeva tasminvadhaṁ prabho icchāvaḥ putratāṁ caiva bhavataḥ sumahātapaḥ

Madhu and Kaitabha said: 'In that place where no one has ever died, O god, we wish for our death, O lord -- and, O one of great austerity, we wish also to become your sons.'

Verse 46 (padma.1.40.46)

The blessed Lord said: 'Let it certainly be so for you two, in the future, in the coming Kali age; you shall be born there -- there is no doubt; I speak this truth to you both.'

Verse 47 (padma.1.40.47)

varaṁ pradāyātha mahāsurābhyāṁ sanātano viśvadharaḥ surottamaḥ rajastamojau tu tadāṁjanopamau mamarda tāvūrutale'maraprabhuḥ

Having thus granted the boon to the two great Asuras, the eternal one, the sustainer of the universe, foremost of gods, that lord of the immortals then crushed those two, born of rajas and tamas, dark as collyrium, beneath his very thighs.

Verse 48 (padma.1.40.48)

sthitvā tasmiṁstu kamale brahmā brahmavidāṁvaraḥ ūrdhvabāhurmahātejāstapoghoraṁ samāśritaḥ

Standing then upon that lotus, Brahma, foremost of the knowers of Brahman, of great splendor, his arms upraised, took up terrible austerity.

Verse 49 (padma.1.40.49)

prajvalanniva tejobhirbhābhiḥ svābhistamonudaḥ babhāṣe sa tu dharmātmā sahasrāṁśurivāṁśubhiḥ

Blazing as if with his own splendor, dispelling darkness, that righteous soul spoke, like the thousand-rayed sun with its beams.

Verse 50 (padma.1.40.50)

Then, taking on another form, the imperishable Lord Narayana came, of great splendor, the teacher of yoga, of great renown --

Verse 51 (padma.1.40.51)

sāṁkhyācāryaśca matimānkapilo brahmaṇāṁ varaḥ ubhāvapi mahātmānau pūjitau tatra tatparau

as the wise teacher of Sankhya, Kapila, foremost of Brahmins. Both these great souls, devoted to that task, were honored there.

Verse 52 (padma.1.40.52)

Those two, having arrived, spoke there to Brahma of measureless splendor; knowers of the distinctions of high and low, honored by the great sages,

Verse 53 (padma.1.40.53)

brahma saṁparivedyaṁ te viśāla jagadāsthitau grāmaṇīssarvabhūtānāṁ brahmā trailokyapūjitaḥ

said: 'Brahman is to be fully known by you, O vast one, established in the world' -- thus addressing Brahma, leader of all beings, worshipped by the three worlds.

Verse 54 (padma.1.40.54)

tayostadvacanaṁ śrutvā vibodhyagatayoḥ param trīnimānkṛtavānlokānyatheyaṁ brahmaṇaḥ śrutiḥ

Having heard their words, and being enlightened by those two, gone to the highest, he made these three worlds, as this tradition of Brahma tells.

Verse 55 (padma.1.40.55)

putraṁ svasaṁbhavaṁ caikaṁ samutpāditavānbhuvam tadāgre cāgatastasya brahmamānasasaṁbhavaḥ

He brought forth a single son, born of himself, for the earth; and before him then came his mind-born son, born of Brahma.

Verse 56 (padma.1.40.56)

utpannamātro brahmāṇamuktavānmānasaḥ sutaḥ kiṁ kurmastava sāhāyyaṁ bravītu bhagavāniti

As soon as he was born, that mind-born son said to Brahma: 'What shall we do to help you? Let the Lord tell us.'

Verse 57 (padma.1.40.57)

brahmovāca yadeṣa kapilo nāma brahmanārāyaṇastathā vadato bhavatastvaṁ tu tatkuruṣva mahāmate

Brahma said: 'Whatever this one named Kapila, and likewise Narayana-as-Brahman, tells you to do -- do that, O great-minded one.'

Verse 58 (padma.1.40.58)

The blessed Lord said: 'That which is true, imperishable Brahman, of eighteen kinds -- that which is true and immortal -- that supreme state, keep in remembrance.'

Verse 60 (padma.1.40.60)

etadvaco niśamyaivaṁ sa yayau diśamuttarāṁ gatvā ca tatra sa brahma agamajjñānacakṣuṣā

Having heard this word, he went thus to the northern direction; and having gone there, he attained that Brahman with the eye of knowledge.

Verse 61 (padma.1.40.61)
