The Tarakamaya War: Aurva's Fire and the Fall of Kalanemi
Verse 1 (padma.1.41.1)
पुलस्त्य उवाच। आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा अश्विनौ च महाबलौ। सबलाः सानुगाश्चैव संनह्यन्त यथाक्रमम्।
pulastya uvāca ādityā vasavo rudrā aśvinau ca mahābalau sabalāḥ sānugāścaiva saṁnahyanta yathākramam
Pulastya said: 'The Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, and the two mighty Ashvins, together with their forces and followers, armed themselves each in due order.'
Verse 2 (padma.1.41.2)
पुरुहूतश्च पुरतो लोकपालः सहस्रदृक्। ग्रामणीः सर्वदेवानामारुरोह वरद्विपम्।
puruhūtaśca purato lokapālaḥ sahasradṛk grāmaṇīḥ sarvadevānāmāruroha varadvipam
'And Purandara, foremost of the guardians of the world, the thousand-eyed one, leader of all the gods, mounted his excellent elephant.'
Verse 3 (padma.1.41.3)
सव्ये चास्य रथः पार्श्वे पक्षिप्रवरकेतनः। सुरारुचक्रचरणो हैमच्छत्रपरिष्कृतः।
savye cāsya rathaḥ pārśve pakṣipravaraketanaḥ surārucakracaraṇo haimacchatrapariṣkṛtaḥ
'At his left side was his chariot, marked with the emblem of a foremost bird, its wheels bright as the gods, adorned with a golden parasol,'
Verse 4 (padma.1.41.4)
देवगंधर्वयक्षौघैरनुयातः सहस्रशः। दीप्तिमद्भिश्च स्वर्गस्थैर्ब्रह्मर्षिभिरभिष्टुतः।
devagaṁdharvayakṣaughairanuyātaḥ sahasraśaḥ dīptimadbhiśca svargasthairbrahmarṣibhirabhiṣṭutaḥ
'followed by thousands of hosts of gods, gandharvas, and yakshas, praised by radiant Brahmarshis dwelling in heaven,'
Verse 5 (padma.1.41.5)
वज्रविस्फारितोद्भूतैर्विद्युदिंद्रायुधप्रभैः। युक्तं बलाहकगणैः पर्वतैरिव कामगैः।
vajravisphāritodbhūtairvidyudiṁdrāyudhaprabhaiḥ yuktaṁ balāhakagaṇaiḥ parvatairiva kāmagaiḥ
'yoked with masses of storm-clouds, born of the flashing of the thunderbolt, radiant as lightning and the rainbow, like mountains that could travel at will.'
Verse 6 (padma.1.41.6)
यमारूढः स भगवान्पर्येति सकलं जगत्। हविर्दानेषु गायंति विप्रा मखमुखेस्थिताः।
yamārūḍhaḥ sa bhagavānparyeti sakalaṁ jagat havirdāneṣu gāyaṁti viprā makhamukhesthitāḥ
'Mounted on that chariot, that lord goes about the entire world; at the giving of oblations, Brahmins standing at the head of the sacrifice sing his praise.'
Verse 7 (padma.1.41.7)
स्वर्गसंग्रामयातेषु देवतूर्यनिनादिषु। सेंद्रं तमुपनृत्यंति शतशो ह्यप्सरोगणाः।
svargasaṁgrāmayāteṣu devatūryaninādiṣu seṁdraṁ tamupanṛtyaṁti śataśo hyapsarogaṇāḥ
'As they marched to the battle in heaven, amid the resounding of the drums of the gods, hundreds of troupes of Apsarases danced around him and Indra.'
Verse 8 (padma.1.41.8)
केतुना नागराजेन राजमानो यथा रविः। युक्तो हयसहस्रेण मनोमारुतरंहसा।
ketunā nāgarājena rājamāno yathā raviḥ yukto hayasahasreṇa manomārutaraṁhasā
'Shining with the banner of the king of elephants, like the sun, yoked with a thousand horses swift as mind or wind,'
Verse 9 (padma.1.41.9)
सम्यग्रथवरो भाति युक्तो मातलिना तदा। कृत्स्नः परिवृतो मेरुर्भास्करस्येव तेजसा।
samyagrathavaro bhāti yukto mātalinā tadā kṛtsnaḥ parivṛto merurbhāskarasyeva tejasā
'his excellent chariot shone brightly, then driven by Matali; the whole scene was as if Mount Meru were encircled by the sun's splendor.'
Verse 10 (padma.1.41.10)
यमस्तु दंडमुद्यम्य कालयुक्तं च मुद्गरं। तस्थौ सुरगणानीके दैत्यानां चैव दर्शयन्।
yamastu daṁḍamudyamya kālayuktaṁ ca mudgaraṁ tasthau suragaṇānīke daityānāṁ caiva darśayan
'And Yama, raising his rod and his club joined with Time itself, stood in the ranks of the gods, displaying it to the Daityas.'
Verse 11 (padma.1.41.11)
चतुर्भिः सागरैर्युक्तो लेलिहानैश्च पन्नगैः। शंखमुक्तांगदधरो बिभ्रत्तोयमयं वपुः।
caturbhiḥ sāgarairyukto lelihānaiśca pannagaiḥ śaṁkhamuktāṁgadadharo bibhrattoyamayaṁ vapuḥ
'Varuna, accompanied by the four oceans and flickering-tongued serpents, wearing a conch, pearls, and armlets, bearing a body made of water,'
Verse 12 (padma.1.41.12)
कालपाशान्समाविध्य हयैः शशिकरोपमैः। वाय्वीरितजलाकारैः कुर्वन्लीलाः सहस्रशः।
kālapāśānsamāvidhya hayaiḥ śaśikaropamaiḥ vāyvīritajalākāraiḥ kurvanlīlāḥ sahasraśaḥ
'brandishing the nooses of Time, with horses like moonbeams, shaped like water stirred by the wind, performing a thousand sportive feats,'
Verse 13 (padma.1.41.13)
पांडुरोद्धूतवसनः प्रवालरुचिरांगदः। मणिश्यामोत्तमवपुर्हारकेणार्चितोदरः।
pāṁḍuroddhūtavasanaḥ pravālarucirāṁgadaḥ maṇiśyāmottamavapurhārakeṇārcitodaraḥ
'clad in flowing white garments, his armlets bright with coral, his fine form dark as sapphire, his belly adorned with a necklace,'
Verse 14 (padma.1.41.14)
वरुणः पाशधृङ्मध्ये देवानीकस्य तस्थिवान्। युद्धवेलामभिलषन्भिन्नवेल इवार्णवः।
varuṇaḥ pāśadhṛṅmadhye devānīkasya tasthivān yuddhavelāmabhilaṣanbhinnavela ivārṇavaḥ
'Varuna, noose in hand, stood in the midst of the divine army, eager for the hour of battle, like the ocean that has broken its shore.'
Verse 15 (padma.1.41.15)
यक्षराक्षससैन्येन गुह्यकानां गणैरपि। युक्तश्च शंखपद्माभ्यां निधीनामधिपः प्रभुः।
yakṣarākṣasasainyena guhyakānāṁ gaṇairapi yuktaśca śaṁkhapadmābhyāṁ nidhīnāmadhipaḥ prabhuḥ
'Accompanied by an army of Yakshas and Rakshasas, and by hosts of Guhyakas, joined with his treasures Shankha and Padma, that lord of treasures,'
Verse 16 (padma.1.41.16)
राजराजेश्वरःश्रीमान्गदापाणिरदृश्यत। विमानयोधी धनदो विमाने पुष्पके स्थितः।
rājarājeśvaraḥśrīmāngadāpāṇiradṛśyata vimānayodhī dhanado vimāne puṣpake sthitaḥ
'the glorious king of kings, was seen with mace in hand; Dhanada, fighting from his aerial car, stood in his Pushpaka chariot.'
Verse 17 (padma.1.41.17)
स राजराजः शुशुभे यक्षेशो नरवाहनः। पूर्वपक्षे सहस्राक्षः पितृराजश्च दक्षिणे।
sa rājarājaḥ śuśubhe yakṣeśo naravāhanaḥ pūrvapakṣe sahasrākṣaḥ pitṛrājaśca dakṣiṇe
'That king of kings shone forth, lord of Yakshas, borne by men; in the eastern flank was the thousand-eyed one, and in the south the king of the ancestors,'
Verse 18 (padma.1.41.18)
वरुणः पश्चिमे पक्ष उत्तरे नरवाहनः। चतुःपक्षाश्च चत्त्वारो लोकपाला महाबलाः।
varuṇaḥ paścime pakṣa uttare naravāhanaḥ catuḥpakṣāśca cattvāro lokapālā mahābalāḥ
'Varuna in the western flank, and the man-borne one in the north; thus the four mighty guardians of the world stood in the four flanks.'
Verse 19 (padma.1.41.19)
आत्मदिक्षुचरंतश्चतस्यदेवबलस्यते। सूर्यः सप्ताश्वयुक्तेन रथेनानिलगामिना।
ātmadikṣucaraṁtaścatasyadevabalasyate sūryaḥ saptāśvayuktena rathenānilagāminā
'moving each in his own direction, of that divine army. The Sun, with his chariot yoked with seven horses, moving swift as wind,'
Verse 20 (padma.1.41.20)
श्रिया जाज्वल्यमानेन दीप्यमानैश्च रश्मिभिः। उदयास्तमयौ चक्रे मेरुपर्यन्तगामिना।
śriyā jājvalyamānena dīpyamānaiśca raśmibhiḥ udayāstamayau cakre meruparyantagāminā
'blazing with splendor, radiant with his beams, made his rising and setting, traveling up to the bounds of Meru,'
Verse 21 (padma.1.41.21)
त्रिदिव द्वारचक्रेण तपसा लोकमव्ययम्। सहस्ररश्मियुक्तेन भ्राजमानेन तेजसा।
tridiva dvāracakreṇa tapasā lokamavyayam sahasraraśmiyuktena bhrājamānena tejasā
'by the wheel that is the gateway of heaven, warming with his heat the imperishable world, joined with a thousand rays, shining with splendor,'
Verse 22 (padma.1.41.22)
चचार मध्ये देवानां द्वादशात्मा दिवाकरः। सोमः श्वेतहयो भाति स्यंदने शीतरश्मिमान्।
cacāra madhye devānāṁ dvādaśātmā divākaraḥ somaḥ śvetahayo bhāti syaṁdane śītaraśmimān
'the twelve-fold Sun moved among the gods. The Moon, drawn by white horses, cool-rayed, shone in his chariot,'
Verse 23 (padma.1.41.23)
हिमतोयप्रपूर्णाभिर्भाभिराह्लादयञ्जगत्। तमृक्षयोगानुगतं शिशिरांशुं द्विजेश्वरम्।
himatoyaprapūrṇābhirbhābhirāhlādayañjagat tamṛkṣayogānugataṁ śiśirāṁśuṁ dvijeśvaram
'gladdening the world with his rays, full of frosty, watery light -- that cool-rayed lord of the twice-born, accompanied by his union with the lunar mansions,'
Verse 24 (padma.1.41.24)
शशच्छायांकिततनुं नैशस्य तमसः क्षयम्। ज्योतिषामीश्वरं व्योम्नि रसदं प्रभुमव्ययम्।
śaśacchāyāṁkitatanuṁ naiśasya tamasaḥ kṣayam jyotiṣāmīśvaraṁ vyomni rasadaṁ prabhumavyayam
'his body marked with the shadow of the hare, the destroyer of night's darkness, lord of the heavenly bodies in the sky, the giver of essence, the imperishable lord,'
Verse 25 (padma.1.41.25)
ओषधीनां पवित्राणां निधानममृतस्य च। जगतः परमं भागं सौम्यं सर्वमयं रसम्।
oṣadhīnāṁ pavitrāṇāṁ nidhānamamṛtasya ca jagataḥ paramaṁ bhāgaṁ saumyaṁ sarvamayaṁ rasam
'the treasury of the sacred herbs and of nectar, the supreme portion of the world, the gentle, all-pervading essence --'
Verse 26 (padma.1.41.26)
ददृशुर्दानवाः सोमं हिमप्रहरणं स्थितम्। यः प्राणः सर्वभूतानां पंचधा भिद्यते नृषु।
dadṛśurdānavāḥ somaṁ himapraharaṇaṁ sthitam yaḥ prāṇaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ paṁcadhā bhidyate nṛṣu
'thus the Danavas beheld Soma, standing there, wielder of frost as a weapon -- he who is the vital breath of all beings, dividing fivefold in men,'
Verse 27 (padma.1.41.27)
सप्तस्कंधगतो लोकांस्त्रीन्दधार चकार च। यमाहुरग्निकर्त्तारं सर्वप्रभवमीश्वरम्।
saptaskaṁdhagato lokāṁstrīndadhāra cakāra ca yamāhuragnikarttāraṁ sarvaprabhavamīśvaram
'who, dwelling in the seven branches of fire, sustained and made the three worlds, whom they call the maker of fire, the lord and source of everything,'
Verse 28 (padma.1.41.28)
सप्तस्वरगता यस्य योनिर्गीर्भिरुदीर्यते। यं वदंति चलं भूतं यं वदंत्यशरीरिणम्।
saptasvaragatā yasya yonirgīrbhirudīryate yaṁ vadaṁti calaṁ bhūtaṁ yaṁ vadaṁtyaśarīriṇam
'whose origin, present in the seven musical notes, is proclaimed by words, whom they call the moving element, whom they call the bodiless one,'
Verse 29 (padma.1.41.29)
यमाहुराकाशगमं शीघ्रगं शब्दयोनिजम्। स वायुः सर्वभूतायुरुद्धतः स्वेन तेजसा।
yamāhurākāśagamaṁ śīghragaṁ śabdayonijam sa vāyuḥ sarvabhūtāyuruddhataḥ svena tejasā
'whom they call the traveler of the sky, the swift-mover, born of sound as his source -- that Wind, the very life-breath of all beings, roused by his own energy,'
Verse 30 (padma.1.41.30)
ववौ प्रव्यथयन्दैत्यान्प्रतिलोमं सतोयदः। मारुतो देवगंधर्वैर्विद्याधरगणैः सह।
vavau pravyathayandaityānpratilomaṁ satoyadaḥ māruto devagaṁdharvairvidyādharagaṇaiḥ saha
'blew against the current, together with rain-clouds, troubling the Daityas -- that Wind, together with the gods, Gandharvas, and hosts of Vidyadharas,'
Verse 31 (padma.1.41.31)
चिक्रीड रश्मिभिश्शुभ्रैर्निर्मुक्तैरिव पन्नगैः। सृजंतः सर्पपतयस्तीव्रं रोषमयं विषम्।
cikrīḍa raśmibhiśśubhrairnirmuktairiva pannagaiḥ sṛjaṁtaḥ sarpapatayastīvraṁ roṣamayaṁ viṣam
'sported with his bright rays, like serpents freed from their skins; and the kings of serpents released their fierce, wrathful venom.'
Verse 32 (padma.1.41.32)
शरभूता विलग्नाश्च चेरुर्व्यात्तानना दिवि। पर्वताश्च शिलाशृंगैः शतशाखैश्च पादपैः।
śarabhūtā vilagnāśca cerurvyāttānanā divi parvatāśca śilāśṛṁgaiḥ śataśākhaiśca pādapaiḥ
'Having become like arrows, they clung fast and moved about in the sky with gaping mouths; and the mountains, with their rocky peaks and hundred-branched trees,'
Verse 33 (padma.1.41.33)
उपतस्थुः सुरगणान्प्रहर्तुं दानवं बलम्। यः स देवो हृषीकेशः पद्मनाभस्त्रिविक्रमः।
upatasthuḥ suragaṇānprahartuṁ dānavaṁ balam yaḥ sa devo hṛṣīkeśaḥ padmanābhastrivikramaḥ
'presented themselves to the hosts of gods, to strike down the army of Danavas. And that god who is Hrishikesha, lotus-naveled, of the three strides,'
Verse 34 (padma.1.41.34)
युगांते कृष्णवर्त्मा च विश्वस्य जगतः प्रभुः। सर्वयोनिः समधुहा हव्यभुक्क्रतुसंस्थितः।
yugāṁte kṛṣṇavartmā ca viśvasya jagataḥ prabhuḥ sarvayoniḥ samadhuhā havyabhukkratusaṁsthitaḥ
'who at the end of the age becomes the fire whose path is dark, the lord of the entire universe, the source of all, the destroyer of Madhu, the consumer of oblations, abiding within the sacrifice,'
Verse 35 (padma.1.41.35)
भूम्यम्बुव्योमभूतात्मा श्यामः शांतिकरोरिहा। अविघ्नममरादीनां चक्रे चक्रगदाधरः।
bhūmyambuvyomabhūtātmā śyāmaḥ śāṁtikarorihā avighnamamarādīnāṁ cakre cakragadādharaḥ
'whose self is composed of earth, water, and sky, dark-hued, the bringer of peace on earth, the bearer of discus and mace, made the battle free of obstacle for the immortals and the rest.'
Verse 36 (padma.1.41.36)
सव्येनालभ्य महतीं सर्वायुधविनाशिनीं। करेण कालीं वपुषा शत्रुकालप्रदां गदां।
savyenālabhya mahatīṁ sarvāyudhavināśinīṁ kareṇa kālīṁ vapuṣā śatrukālapradāṁ gadāṁ
'With his left hand he grasped that great mace, dark in form, the destroyer of every weapon, dealer of death to his foes,'

शेषैर्भुजैः प्रदीप्ताभैर्भुजगारिध्वजः प्रभुः। दधारायुधजालानि शार्ङ्गादीनि महाबलः।
śeṣairbhujaiḥ pradīptābhairbhujagāridhvajaḥ prabhuḥ dadhārāyudhajālāni śārṅgādīni mahābalaḥ
'and with his remaining blazing arms, that mighty Lord, bannered with the enemy of serpents, bore his array of weapons, beginning with the Sharnga bow --'

स कश्यपस्यात्मभवं द्विजं भुजगभोजनम्। भुजगेंद्रेण वदने निविष्टेन विराजितम्।
sa kaśyapasyātmabhavaṁ dvijaṁ bhujagabhojanam bhujageṁdreṇa vadane niviṣṭena virājitam
'he mounted that bird born of Kashyapa, the devourer of serpents, resplendent with a serpent-king held fast in his beak,'

अमृतारंभसंयुक्तं मंदराद्रिमिवोच्छितम्। देवासुरविमर्देषु बहुशो दृष्टविक्रमम्।
amṛtāraṁbhasaṁyuktaṁ maṁdarādrimivocchitam devāsuravimardeṣu bahuśo dṛṣṭavikramam
'joined with him in the fetching of nectar, towering like Mount Mandara, whose valor had often been witnessed in the clashes of gods and asuras,'
Verse 40 (padma.1.41.40)
महेंद्रेणामृतस्यार्थे वज्रेण कृतलक्षणम्। विचित्रपत्रवसनं धातुमंतमिवाचलम्।
maheṁdreṇāmṛtasyārthe vajreṇa kṛtalakṣaṇam vicitrapatravasanaṁ dhātumaṁtamivācalam
'marked by the great Indra's thunderbolt, for the sake of the nectar, clothed in wondrous feathers, like a mountain rich with minerals,'

स्फीतक्रोधावलंबेन शीतांशुसमतेजसा। भोगिभोगावसक्तेन मणिरत्नेन भास्वता।
sphītakrodhāvalaṁbena śītāṁśusamatejasā bhogibhogāvasaktena maṇiratnena bhāsvatā
'resting on his vast anger, of splendor equal to the cool-rayed moon, adorned with a gleaming jewel taken from the serpent's hood,'
Verse 42 (padma.1.41.42)
पक्षाभ्यां चारुपत्राभ्यामावृतं दिवि लीलया। युगांते सेंद्रचापाभ्यां तोयदाभ्यामिवांबरम्।
pakṣābhyāṁ cārupatrābhyāmāvṛtaṁ divi līlayā yugāṁte seṁdracāpābhyāṁ toyadābhyāmivāṁbaram
'his two lovely-feathered wings covering the sky as if in play, like at the end of an age, when the sky is covered by twin rain-clouds crowned with rainbows,'
Verse 43 (padma.1.41.43)
नीललोहितपीताभिः पताकाभिरलंकृतम्। अरुणावरजं श्रीमानारुह्य समरे प्रभुः।
nīlalohitapītābhiḥ patākābhiralaṁkṛtam aruṇāvarajaṁ śrīmānāruhya samare prabhuḥ
'adorned with blue, red, and yellow banners -- that glorious Lord, mounting Aruna's younger brother, in the battle,'
Verse 44 (padma.1.41.44)
सुवर्णवर्णवपुषं सुपर्णं खेचरोत्तमम्। तमन्वयुः सुरगणा मुनयश्च समाहिताः।
suvarṇavarṇavapuṣaṁ suparṇaṁ khecarottamam tamanvayuḥ suragaṇā munayaśca samāhitāḥ
'golden-hued in form, Suparna, foremost of sky-travelers -- him the hosts of gods and composed sages followed.'
Verse 45 (padma.1.41.45)
गीर्भिः परममंत्राभिस्तुष्टुवुश्च गदाधरम्। तद्वैश्रवणसंश्लिष्टं वैवस्वतपुरःसरम्।
gīrbhiḥ paramamaṁtrābhistuṣṭuvuśca gadādharam tadvaiśravaṇasaṁśliṣṭaṁ vaivasvatapuraḥsaram
'With supreme mantras and words they praised the mace-bearer -- that army joined with Vaishravana, led by Vaivasvata,'
Verse 46 (padma.1.41.46)
वारिराजपरिक्षिप्तं देवराजविराजितम्। पवनाबद्धनिर्घोषं संप्रदीप्त हुताशनम्।
vārirājaparikṣiptaṁ devarājavirājitam pavanābaddhanirghoṣaṁ saṁpradīpta hutāśanam
'surrounded by the king of waters, adorned by the king of gods, resounding with the roar bound up with the wind, blazing with kindled fire --'
Verse 47 (padma.1.41.47)
विष्णोर्जिष्णोः सहिष्णोश्च भ्राजिष्णोस्तेजसावृतम्। बलं बलवदुद्रिक्ते युद्धाय समवर्तत।
viṣṇorjiṣṇoḥ sahiṣṇośca bhrājiṣṇostejasāvṛtam balaṁ balavadudrikte yuddhāya samavartata
'that army, of Vishnu, the victorious, the enduring, the radiant, wrapped in splendor, mighty, rose up ready for the fierce battle.'
Verse 48 (padma.1.41.48)
स्वस्त्यस्तु देवेभ्य इति बृहस्पतिरभाषत। स्वस्त्यस्तु दैत्येभ्य इति उशना वाक्यमाददे।
svastyastu devebhya iti bṛhaspatirabhāṣata svastyastu daityebhya iti uśanā vākyamādade
'"May it be well for the gods," spoke Brihaspati; "may it be well for the Daityas," Ushanas took up the word.'
Verse 49 (padma.1.41.49)
ताभ्यां बलाभ्यां संजज्ञे तुमुलो विग्रहस्तथा। सुराणामसुराणां च परस्परजयैषिणाम्।
tābhyāṁ balābhyāṁ saṁjajñe tumulo vigrahastathā surāṇāmasurāṇāṁ ca parasparajayaiṣiṇām
'Between those two armies there arose a tumultuous conflict, of gods and asuras, each seeking victory over the other.'
Verse 50 (padma.1.41.50)
दानवा दैवतैः सार्द्धं नानाप्रहरणोद्यमाः। समीयुर्युध्यमाना वै पर्वता इव पर्वतैः।
dānavā daivataiḥ sārddhaṁ nānāpraharaṇodyamāḥ samīyuryudhyamānā vai parvatā iva parvataiḥ
'The Danavas, together with the gods, raising manifold weapons, met each other fighting, like mountains against mountains.'
Verse 51 (padma.1.41.51)
तत्सुरासुरसंयुक्तं युद्धमत्यद्भुतं बभौ। धर्माधर्मसमायुक्तं दर्पेण विनयेन च।
tatsurāsurasaṁyuktaṁ yuddhamatyadbhutaṁ babhau dharmādharmasamāyuktaṁ darpeṇa vinayena ca
'That battle, joined between gods and asuras, appeared most wondrous, marked by dharma and adharma, by arrogance and by humility.'
Verse 52 (padma.1.41.52)
ततो हयैः प्रजवितैर्वारणैश्च प्रचोदितैः। उत्पतद्भिश्च गगने सासिहस्तैः समंततः।
tato hayaiḥ prajavitairvāraṇaiśca pracoditaiḥ utpatadbhiśca gagane sāsihastaiḥ samaṁtataḥ
'Then, with swift horses, and driven elephants, and warriors leaping up into the sky, swords in hand, on every side,'

क्षिप्यमाणैश्च मुसलैः संपतद्भिश्च सायकैः। चापैर्विस्फार्यमाणैश्च पात्यमानैः सुदारुणैः।
kṣipyamāṇaiśca musalaiḥ saṁpatadbhiśca sāyakaiḥ cāpairvisphāryamāṇaiśca pātyamānaiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ
'with clubs being hurled, and arrows flying, with bows being drawn, and with most terrible weapons being cast down,'

तद्युद्धमभवद्घोरं देवदानवसंकुलम्। जगतस्त्रासजननं युगसंवर्तकोपमम्।
tadyuddhamabhavadghoraṁ devadānavasaṁkulam jagatastrāsajananaṁ yugasaṁvartakopamam
'that battle became terrible, thronged with gods and Danavas, generating terror in the world, like the destructive fire at the end of an age.'

स्वहस्तमुक्तैः परिघैर्मुद्गरैश्चैव पर्वतैः। दानवास्समरे जघ्नुर्देवानिंद्रपुरोगमान्।
svahastamuktaiḥ parighairmudgaraiścaiva parvataiḥ dānavāssamare jaghnurdevāniṁdrapurogamān
'With iron bars, clubs, and mountains hurled from their own hands, the Danavas struck down the gods, led by Indra, in that battle.'

ते वध्यमाना बलिभिर्दानवैर्जितकाशिभिः। विषण्णवदना देवा जग्मुरार्तिं परां मृधे।
te vadhyamānā balibhirdānavairjitakāśibhiḥ viṣaṇṇavadanā devā jagmurārtiṁ parāṁ mṛdhe
'Being slain by those mighty, victorious-seeming Danavas, the gods, their faces downcast, fell into extreme distress in that battle.'

ते चास्त्रशूलमथिताः परिघैर्भिन्नमस्तकाः। भिन्नोरस्का दितिसुतैः स्रवद्रक्ता रणे बहु।
te cāstraśūlamathitāḥ parighairbhinnamastakāḥ bhinnoraskā ditisutaiḥ sravadraktā raṇe bahu
'Struck by weapons and spears, their heads split by iron bars, their chests pierced by the sons of Diti, they bled profusely in the battle.'

सूदिताः शरजालैश्च निर्यत्नाश्च शरैः कृताः। प्रविष्टा दानवीं मायां न शेकुस्ते विचेष्टितम्।
sūditāḥ śarajālaiśca niryatnāśca śaraiḥ kṛtāḥ praviṣṭā dānavīṁ māyāṁ na śekuste viceṣṭitam
'Overwhelmed by nets of arrows, and rendered exhausted by those arrows, having entered the illusion cast by the Danavas, they could not manage any effort.'

उत्तंभितमिवाभाति निष्प्राण सदृशाकृति। बलं सुराणामसुरैर्निष्प्रयत्नायुधं कृतम्।
uttaṁbhitamivābhāti niṣprāṇa sadṛśākṛti balaṁ surāṇāmasurairniṣprayatnāyudhaṁ kṛtam
'The army of the gods appeared as if propped up, lifeless in aspect -- by the asuras it was rendered helpless, its weapons useless.'

दैत्यचापच्युतान्घोरांश्छित्वा वज्रेण तान्शरान्। शक्रो दैत्यबलं घोरं विवेश बहुलोचनः।
daityacāpacyutānghorāṁśchitvā vajreṇa tānśarān śakro daityabalaṁ ghoraṁ viveśa bahulocanaḥ
'Cutting down with his thunderbolt those terrible arrows released from the bows of the Daityas, Shakra, the many-eyed one, entered the terrible army of the Daityas.'

स दैत्यप्रमुखान्सर्वान्हत्वा दैत्यबलं महत्। तामसेनास्त्रजालेन तमोभूतमथाकरोत्।
sa daityapramukhānsarvānhatvā daityabalaṁ mahat tāmasenāstrajālena tamobhūtamathākarot
'Having slain all the foremost Daityas, he then, with a net of dark weapons, made the great army of the Daityas shrouded in darkness.'

तेऽन्योन्यं नान्वबुध्यंत दैत्यानां वाहनानि च। घोरेण तमसाविष्टाः पुरुहूतस्य तेजसा।
te'nyonyaṁ nānvabudhyaṁta daityānāṁ vāhanāni ca ghoreṇa tamasāviṣṭāḥ puruhūtasya tejasā
'They could no longer recognize one another, nor their own mounts, being overcome by the terrible darkness cast by Purandara's splendor.'

मायापाशैर्विमुक्तास्तु यत्नवंतः सुरोत्तमाः। शिरांसि दैत्यसंघानां तमोभूतान्यपातयन्।
māyāpāśairvimuktāstu yatnavaṁtaḥ surottamāḥ śirāṁsi daityasaṁghānāṁ tamobhūtānyapātayan
'But the foremost of the gods, freed from the nooses of that illusion, and full of effort, struck down the heads of the hosts of Daityas, shrouded in darkness as they were.'

अपध्वस्ता विसंज्ञाश्च तमसा नीलवर्चसा। पेतुस्ते दानवास्सद्यश्छिन्नपक्षा इवाद्रयः।
apadhvastā visaṁjñāśca tamasā nīlavarcasā petuste dānavāssadyaśchinnapakṣā ivādrayaḥ
'Struck down and senseless, in that dark-hued gloom, those Danavas fell at once, like mountains whose wings had been cut off.'

तत्राभिभूतदैत्यैंद्रमंधकारमिवांतरं। दानवं देहसदनं तमोभूतमिवाभवत्।
tatrābhibhūtadaityaiṁdramaṁdhakāramivāṁtaraṁ dānavaṁ dehasadanaṁ tamobhūtamivābhavat
'There, overpowered, the Daitya host, like an inner darkness overwhelmed by Indra, that dwelling-place of Danava bodies became as if wrapped in darkness.'

तथाऽसृजन्महामायां मयस्तां तामसीं दहन्। युगांतोद्योतजननीं सृष्टा मौर्वेण वह्निना।
tathā'sṛjanmahāmāyāṁ mayastāṁ tāmasīṁ dahan yugāṁtodyotajananīṁ sṛṣṭā maurveṇa vahninā
'Then Maya created a great illusion, dark in nature, that would burn the foe -- an illusion, giving rise like the fire at the end of an age, created by the fire of Aurva's line.'

स ददाह च तां शाक्रीं माया मयविकल्पिता। दैत्याश्चादित्यवपुषा सद्य उत्तस्थुराहवे।
sa dadāha ca tāṁ śākrīṁ māyā mayavikalpitā daityāścādityavapuṣā sadya uttasthurāhave
'That illusion, fashioned by Maya, burned away that darkness of Indra's making; and the Daityas, with bodies bright as the sun, at once rose up again in that battle.'

मायां मौर्वीं समासाद्य दह्यमाना दिवौकसः। भेजिरे चंद्रविषयं शीतांशुसलिलह्रदम्।
māyāṁ maurvīṁ samāsādya dahyamānā divaukasaḥ bhejire caṁdraviṣayaṁ śītāṁśusalilahradam
'Confronted by that illusion born of Aurva's fire, and being burned by it, the dwellers of heaven took refuge in the domain of the Moon, in the cool, watery lake of his rays.'

ते दह्यमाना और्वेण वह्निना नष्टचेतसः। शशंसुर्वज्रिणं देवाः संतप्ताः शरणैषिणः।
te dahyamānā aurveṇa vahninā naṣṭacetasaḥ śaśaṁsurvajriṇaṁ devāḥ saṁtaptāḥ śaraṇaiṣiṇaḥ
'Being burned by that fire of Aurva, their senses lost, the gods, tormented, seeking refuge, appealed to the wielder of the thunderbolt.'

संतप्ते मायया सैन्ये हन्यमाने च दानवैः। चोदितो देवराजेन वरुणो वाक्यमब्रवीत्।
saṁtapte māyayā sainye hanyamāne ca dānavaiḥ codito devarājena varuṇo vākyamabravīt
'As the army, tormented by that illusion, was being slain by the Danavas, Varuna, urged by the king of the gods, spoke these words:'

पुरा ब्रह्मर्षिजः शक्र तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम्। उर्वः स पूर्वं तेजस्वी सदृशो ब्रह्मणो गुणैः।
purā brahmarṣijaḥ śakra tapastepe sudāruṇam urvaḥ sa pūrvaṁ tejasvī sadṛśo brahmaṇo guṇaiḥ
'Long ago, O Shakra, there was born a Brahmarshi named Urva, who practiced most severe austerity; he was, of old, a being of great splendor, equal in qualities to Brahma himself.'

तं तपंतमिवादित्यं तपसा जगदव्ययं। उपतस्थुर्मुनिगणा देवा देवर्षिभिः सह।
taṁ tapaṁtamivādityaṁ tapasā jagadavyayaṁ upatasthurmunigaṇā devā devarṣibhiḥ saha
'To him, blazing like the sun, imperishable to the world through his austerity, came companies of sages, and the gods together with the divine seers.'

हिरण्यकशिपुश्चैव दानवो दानवेश्वरः। ॠषिं विज्ञापयामास पुरा परमतेजसम्।
hiraṇyakaśipuścaiva dānavo dānaveśvaraḥ ṝṣiṁ vijñāpayāmāsa purā paramatejasam
'And Hiranyakashipu too, the Danava, lord of the Danavas, formerly made a petition to that sage of supreme splendor.'

ऊचुर्ब्रह्मर्षयस्ते तु वचनं धर्मसंहितम्। ॠषिवंशेषु भगवंश्छिन्नमूलमिदं कुलं।
ūcurbrahmarṣayaste tu vacanaṁ dharmasaṁhitam ṝṣivaṁśeṣu bhagavaṁśchinnamūlamidaṁ kulaṁ
'Those Brahmarshis spoke to him a word grounded in dharma: "Among the lineages of sages, O venerable one, this family of yours has had its root cut off."'
Verse 75 (padma.1.41.75)
एकस्त्वमनपत्यश्च गोत्रा याऽन्यो न विद्यते। कौमारं व्रतमास्थाय क्लेशमेवानुवर्तसे।
ekastvamanapatyaśca gotrā yā'nyo na vidyate kaumāraṁ vratamāsthāya kleśamevānuvartase
'"You alone remain, without offspring; no other of your lineage exists. Holding to the vow of celibacy, you pursue only hardship."'

बहूनि विप्रगोत्राणि मुनीनां भावितात्मनाम्। एकदेहानि तिष्ठंति विविक्तानि विना प्रजाः।
bahūni vipragotrāṇi munīnāṁ bhāvitātmanām ekadehāni tiṣṭhaṁti viviktāni vinā prajāḥ
'"Many lineages of Brahmins, of sages whose souls are purified, stand thus reduced to a single body, isolated, without progeny."'
Verse 77 (padma.1.41.77)
एवंभूतेषु सर्वेषु पुत्रैर्मे नास्ति कारणम्। भवांश्च तापसश्रेष्ठः प्रजापति समद्युतिः।
evaṁbhūteṣu sarveṣu putrairme nāsti kāraṇam bhavāṁśca tāpasaśreṣṭhaḥ prajāpati samadyutiḥ
'"With all things thus, there is for us no other reason but through sons; and you, foremost of ascetics, are equal in splendor to Prajapati."'
Verse 78 (padma.1.41.78)
तत्प्रवर्तस्व वंशाय वर्धयात्मानमात्मना। समाधत्स्वोर्जितं तेजो द्वितीयां कुरु वै तनुं।
tatpravartasva vaṁśāya vardhayātmānamātmanā samādhatsvorjitaṁ tejo dvitīyāṁ kuru vai tanuṁ
'"Therefore act for the sake of your lineage; increase yourself by your own self. Gather your mighty splendor, and make for yourself a second body."'

स एवमुक्तो मुनिभिर्मुनिर्मनसि ताडितः। जगर्ह तानृषिगणान्वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्।
sa evamukto munibhirmunirmanasi tāḍitaḥ jagarha tānṛṣigaṇānvacanaṁ cedamabravīt
'Thus addressed by the sages, that sage, struck in his mind, rebuked those companies of seers, and spoke these words:'

यथा हि विहितो धर्मो मुनीनां शाश्वतः पुरा। आर्षं हि केवलं कर्म वन्यमूलफलाशिनः।
yathā hi vihito dharmo munīnāṁ śāśvataḥ purā ārṣaṁ hi kevalaṁ karma vanyamūlaphalāśinaḥ
'"As the eternal dharma has of old been ordained for sages -- the very work of the sages is simply this: to live eating wild roots and fruits."'

ब्रह्मयोनौ प्रसूतस्य ब्राह्मणस्यात्मवर्तिनः। ब्रह्मचर्यं सुचरितं ब्रह्माणमपि चालयेत्।
brahmayonau prasūtasya brāhmaṇasyātmavartinaḥ brahmacaryaṁ sucaritaṁ brahmāṇamapi cālayet
'"For a Brahmin, born of the Brahman-source, self-controlled, the well-practiced vow of celibacy could shake even Brahma himself."'

जनानां वृत्तयस्तिस्रो ये गृहाश्रमवासिनः। अस्माकं च वने वृत्तिर्वनाश्रमनिवासिनां।
janānāṁ vṛttayastisro ye gṛhāśramavāsinaḥ asmākaṁ ca vane vṛttirvanāśramanivāsināṁ
'"For people who dwell in the householder's stage, there are three proper modes of livelihood; but ours, who dwell in the stage of the forest, is the ascetic way of the forest."'

अब्भक्षा वायुभक्षाश्च दंतोलूखलिनस्तथा। अश्मकुट्टादयो यत्र पंचाग्नितपसश्च ये।
abbhakṣā vāyubhakṣāśca daṁtolūkhalinastathā aśmakuṭṭādayo yatra paṁcāgnitapasaśca ye
'"Those who live on water alone, on air alone, who use only their teeth as a mortar, who pound their food with stones, and those who practice the austerity of the five fires --"'

एते तपसि तिष्ठंतो व्रतैरपि सुदुश्चरैः। ब्रह्मचर्यं पुरस्कृत्य प्रार्थयंति परां गतिम्।
ete tapasi tiṣṭhaṁto vratairapi suduścaraiḥ brahmacaryaṁ puraskṛtya prārthayaṁti parāṁ gatim
'"these, abiding in austerity, through vows most difficult to perform, holding celibacy foremost, seek the highest goal."'

ब्रह्मचर्याद्ब्रह्मणस्य ब्राह्मणत्वं विधीयते। एवमाहुः परे लोके ब्राह्मचर्यविदो जनाः।
brahmacaryādbrahmaṇasya brāhmaṇatvaṁ vidhīyate evamāhuḥ pare loke brāhmacaryavido janāḥ
'"Through celibacy, the very brahminhood of a Brahmin is established -- so say, in the highest sense, those who know the practice of celibacy."'

ब्रह्मचर्ये स्थितो धर्मो ब्रह्मचर्ये स्थितं तपः। ये स्थिता ब्रह्मचर्ये तु ब्राह्मणा दिवि ते स्थिताः।
brahmacarye sthito dharmo brahmacarye sthitaṁ tapaḥ ye sthitā brahmacarye tu brāhmaṇā divi te sthitāḥ
'"Dharma abides in celibacy, austerity abides in celibacy; those Brahmins who abide in celibacy abide, in truth, in heaven."'

नास्ति योगं विना सिद्धिर्नास्ति योगं विना यशः। नास्ति लोके यशोमूलं ब्रह्मचर्यात्परंतपः।
nāsti yogaṁ vinā siddhirnāsti yogaṁ vinā yaśaḥ nāsti loke yaśomūlaṁ brahmacaryātparaṁtapaḥ
'"There is no success without yoga, no fame without yoga; in this world there is no root of fame, O scorcher of foes, higher than celibacy."'

यो निगृह्येंद्रियग्रामं भूतग्रामं च पंचकम्। ब्रह्मचर्यं समाधत्ते किमतः परमं तपः।
yo nigṛhyeṁdriyagrāmaṁ bhūtagrāmaṁ ca paṁcakam brahmacaryaṁ samādhatte kimataḥ paramaṁ tapaḥ
'"He who, restraining the host of senses and the five elements, holds fast to celibacy -- what austerity could surpass that?"'

अयोगकेशधरणमसंकल्प व्रत क्रिया। अब्रह्मचर्या चर्या च त्रयं स्याद्दंभसंज्ञितं।
ayogakeśadharaṇamasaṁkalpa vrata kriyā abrahmacaryā caryā ca trayaṁ syāddaṁbhasaṁjñitaṁ
'"Wearing matted hair without true yogic discipline, performing vows and rites without inner resolve, and practicing conduct without celibacy -- these three are to be called mere hypocrisy."'

क्व दाराः क्व च संयोगः क्व च भावविपर्ययः। नन्वियं ब्रह्मणा सृष्टा मनसा मानसी प्रजा।
kva dārāḥ kva ca saṁyogaḥ kva ca bhāvaviparyayaḥ nanviyaṁ brahmaṇā sṛṣṭā manasā mānasī prajā
'"What place has a wife, what place has union, what place has this perversion of one's true nature? Was not this very progeny, the mind-born progeny, created by Brahma through his mind alone?"'

यद्यस्ति तपसो वीर्यं युष्माकं विजितात्मनाम्। सृजध्वं मानसान्पुत्रान्प्राजापत्येन कर्मणा।
yadyasti tapaso vīryaṁ yuṣmākaṁ vijitātmanām sṛjadhvaṁ mānasānputrānprājāpatyena karmaṇā
'"If there is, in you self-conquered ones, the power of austerity, then create mind-born sons through the very act of Prajapati."'

मनसा निर्मिता योनिराधातव्या तपस्विभिः। नो दारयोगं बीजं च व्रतमुक्तं तपस्विनां।
manasā nirmitā yonirādhātavyā tapasvibhiḥ no dārayogaṁ bījaṁ ca vratamuktaṁ tapasvināṁ
'"A womb fashioned by the mind is what should be resorted to by ascetics; union with a wife, and ordinary seed, is not the vow prescribed for ascetics."'

यदिदं लुप्तधर्माख्यं युष्माभिरिह निर्भयैः। व्याहृतं सद्भिरत्यर्थमसद्भिरिव संमतं।
yadidaṁ luptadharmākhyaṁ yuṣmābhiriha nirbhayaiḥ vyāhṛtaṁ sadbhiratyarthamasadbhiriva saṁmataṁ
'"This proposal of yours, spoken here by you fearlessly, though called by the name of dharma with its true sense lost -- is approved of, as it were, only by the wicked, not truly by the virtuous."'

वपुर्दीप्तांतरात्मानमेष कृत्वा मनोमयं। दारयोगं विना स्रक्ष्ये पुत्रमात्मतनूरुहं।
vapurdīptāṁtarātmānameṣa kṛtvā manomayaṁ dārayogaṁ vinā srakṣye putramātmatanūruhaṁ
'"Making my own blazing inner self into a mind-formed body, I shall, without union with a wife, produce a son grown from my very self."'

एवमात्मानमात्मा मे द्वितीयं जनयिष्यति। प्राजापत्येन विधिना दिधक्षंतमिव प्रजाः।
evamātmānamātmā me dvitīyaṁ janayiṣyati prājāpatyena vidhinā didhakṣaṁtamiva prajāḥ
'"Thus my own self shall beget a second self, by the very method of Prajapati -- one who, as it were, desires to consume all creatures."'

वरुण उवाच। उर्वस्तु तपसाविष्टो निवेश्योरुं हुताशने। ममंथैकेन दर्भेण पुत्रस्य प्रसवारणिं।
varuṇa uvāca urvastu tapasāviṣṭo niveśyoruṁ hutāśane mamaṁthaikena darbheṇa putrasya prasavāraṇiṁ
Varuna said: 'And Urva, absorbed in austerity, placing his thigh over the sacred fire, churned with a single blade of kusha grass the fire-stick from which his son would arise.'
Verse 97 (padma.1.41.97)
तस्योरुं सहसा भित्वा वरोऽसौ ह्यग्निरुत्थितः। जगतो दहनाकांक्षी पुत्रोग्निस्समपद्यत।
tasyoruṁ sahasā bhitvā varo'sau hyagnirutthitaḥ jagato dahanākāṁkṣī putrognissamapadyata
'Suddenly splitting open his thigh, that excellent fire arose; a son, in the form of fire, eager to consume the world, was thus produced.'

उर्वस्योरुं विनिर्भिद्य और्वो नामांतकोऽनलः। दिधक्षुरिव लोकांस्त्रीन्जज्ञे परमकोपनः।
urvasyoruṁ vinirbhidya aurvo nāmāṁtako'nalaḥ didhakṣuriva lokāṁstrīnjajñe paramakopanaḥ
'Splitting open Urva's thigh, a fire named Aurva, like the ender of all things, was born, most wrathful, as if eager to consume the three worlds.'

उत्पद्यमानश्चोवाच पितरं दीनया गिरा। क्षुधा मे बाधते तात जगद्भक्षेत्यजस्व मां।
utpadyamānaścovāca pitaraṁ dīnayā girā kṣudhā me bādhate tāta jagadbhakṣetyajasva māṁ
'And as he was born, he spoke to his father in a piteous voice: "Hunger torments me, father; let me devour the world -- release me."'

त्रिदिवारोहिभिर्ज्वालैर्जृम्भमाणो दिशो दश। निर्दहन्सर्वभूतानि ववृधे सोंतकोपमः।
tridivārohibhirjvālairjṛmbhamāṇo diśo daśa nirdahansarvabhūtāni vavṛdhe soṁtakopamaḥ
'With flames that reached up to heaven, opening wide, devouring the ten directions, consuming all beings, he grew, that fire resembling Death itself.'

एतस्मिन्नंतरे ब्रह्मा मुनिमुर्वं समागतः। उवाच वार्यतां पुत्रो जगतस्त्वं दयां कुरु।
etasminnaṁtare brahmā munimurvaṁ samāgataḥ uvāca vāryatāṁ putro jagatastvaṁ dayāṁ kuru
'Meanwhile Brahma came to the sage Urva and said: "Let your son be restrained; have mercy on the world."'

अस्यापत्पस्यते विप्र करिष्ये साह्यमुत्तमं। तथ्यमेतद्वचः पुत्र शृणु त्वं वदतां वर।
asyāpatpasyate vipra kariṣye sāhyamuttamaṁ tathyametadvacaḥ putra śṛṇu tvaṁ vadatāṁ vara
'"I shall see to his affliction, O Brahmin, and render him the highest help. This word is true, my son; hear it, O best of speakers."'

और्व उवाच। धन्योस्म्यनुगृहीतोस्मि यन्मे त्वं भगवन्शिशोः। मतिमेतां ददासीह परमात्मन्हिताय वै।
aurva uvāca dhanyosmyanugṛhītosmi yanme tvaṁ bhagavanśiśoḥ matimetāṁ dadāsīha paramātmanhitāya vai
Aurva said: 'I am blessed, I am favored, that you, my lord, grant this counsel to me, a mere child, here for my own good, O Supreme Self.'
Verse 104 (padma.1.41.104)
प्रभातकाले संप्राप्ते कांक्षितव्ये समागमे। भगवंस्तर्पितः पुत्रः कैर्हव्यैः प्राप्स्यते सुखम्।
prabhātakāle saṁprāpte kāṁkṣitavye samāgame bhagavaṁstarpitaḥ putraḥ kairhavyaiḥ prāpsyate sukham
'"When the dawn arrives, and the longed-for union takes place, my lord, by what oblations will your son be satisfied and find contentment?"'
Verse 105 (padma.1.41.105)
कुत्र चास्य निवासः स्याद्भोजनं तु किमात्मकम्। विधास्यतीह भगवान्वीर्यतुल्यं महौजसः।
kutra cāsya nivāsaḥ syādbhojanaṁ tu kimātmakam vidhāsyatīha bhagavānvīryatulyaṁ mahaujasaḥ
'"And where shall his dwelling be, and of what nature his food? Let the Lord ordain here what is fitting to the power of this being of great might."'
Verse 106 (padma.1.41.106)
ब्रह्मोवाच। बडवामुखे च वसतिः समुद्रे वै भविष्यति। ममयोनिर्जलं विप्र तच्चामेयं व्रजत्वयं।
brahmovāca baḍavāmukhe ca vasatiḥ samudre vai bhaviṣyati mamayonirjalaṁ vipra taccāmeyaṁ vrajatvayaṁ
Brahma said: 'His dwelling shall be in the mare's mouth, in the ocean; water is my very source, O Brahmin, and to that immeasurable place let him go.'
Verse 107 (padma.1.41.107)
तत्राऽयमास्ते नियतं पिबन्वारिमयं हविः। तद्वारिविस्तरं विप्र विसृजाम्यालयं च तम्।
tatrā'yamāste niyataṁ pibanvārimayaṁ haviḥ tadvārivistaraṁ vipra visṛjāmyālayaṁ ca tam
'"There he shall dwell fixedly, drinking the oblation made of water; that vast expanse of water, O Brahmin, and that dwelling, I grant to him."'
Verse 108 (padma.1.41.108)
ततो युगांते भूतानामेष चाहं च पुत्रक। सहितो विचरिष्यावो निष्पुराणकराविह।
tato yugāṁte bhūtānāmeṣa cāhaṁ ca putraka sahito vicariṣyāvo niṣpurāṇakarāviha
'"Then, at the end of the age, of all creatures, he and I together shall roam here, the two of us who bring the old order to naught."'
Verse 109 (padma.1.41.109)
एषोग्निरंतकाले तु सलिलाशी मया कृतः। दहनः सर्वभूतानां सदेवासुररक्षसाम्।
eṣogniraṁtakāle tu salilāśī mayā kṛtaḥ dahanaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ sadevāsurarakṣasām
'"This fire, at the time of the end, made by me a drinker of the waters, shall be the consumer of all beings, together with gods, asuras, and rakshasas."'

एवमस्त्विति तं सोग्निः संवृतज्वालमंडलः। प्रविवेशार्णवमुखं नत्वोर्वं पितरं प्रभुम्।
evamastviti taṁ sogniḥ saṁvṛtajvālamaṁḍalaḥ praviveśārṇavamukhaṁ natvorvaṁ pitaraṁ prabhum
'"So be it," said Aurva; and that fire, its circle of flame now contained, having bowed to his father, the lord Urva, entered the mouth of the ocean.'
Verse 111 (padma.1.41.111)
प्रतियातस्ततो ब्रह्मा ते च सर्वे महर्षयः। और्वस्याग्नेः प्रभावज्ञाः स्वांस्वां गतिमुपागताः।
pratiyātastato brahmā te ca sarve maharṣayaḥ aurvasyāgneḥ prabhāvajñāḥ svāṁsvāṁ gatimupāgatāḥ
'Then Brahma departed, and all those great sages, now knowing the power of Aurva's fire, went each to his own abode.'
Verse 112 (padma.1.41.112)
हिरण्यकशिपुर्दृष्ट्वा तदा तन्महदद्भुतम्। उर्वं प्रणतसर्वांगो वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह।
hiraṇyakaśipurdṛṣṭvā tadā tanmahadadbhutam urvaṁ praṇatasarvāṁgo vākyametaduvāca ha
'Hiranyakashipu, having seen that great wonder, bowing with his whole body to Urva, spoke these words:'
Verse 113 (padma.1.41.113)
भगवन्नद्भुतमिदं संवृत्तं लोकसाक्षिकम्। तपसा ते मुनिश्रेष्ठ परितुष्टः पितामहः।
bhagavannadbhutamidaṁ saṁvṛttaṁ lokasākṣikam tapasā te muniśreṣṭha parituṣṭaḥ pitāmahaḥ
'"Lord, this wondrous thing has occurred, witnessed by the world; by your austerity, O best of sages, the Grandsire has been well pleased."'
Verse 114 (padma.1.41.114)
अहं तु तव पुत्रस्य तव चैव महाव्रत। भृत्य इत्यवगंतव्यः श्लाघ्यस्त्वमिह कर्मणा।
ahaṁ tu tava putrasya tava caiva mahāvrata bhṛtya ityavagaṁtavyaḥ ślāghyastvamiha karmaṇā
'"Know that I am the servant of your son, and of you yourself, O one of great vows; you are praiseworthy here by this deed."'
Verse 115 (padma.1.41.115)
तन्मां पश्य समापन्नं तवैवाराधने रतम्। यदि सीदेन्मुनिश्रेष्ठ तवै वस्यात्पराजयः।
tanmāṁ paśya samāpannaṁ tavaivārādhane ratam yadi sīdenmuniśreṣṭha tavai vasyātparājayaḥ
'"Behold me, therefore, devoted, intent only on your worship. Should your son falter, O best of sages, the defeat would be yours alone."'
Verse 116 (padma.1.41.116)
उर्व उवाच। धन्योस्म्यनुगृहीतोस्मि यस्य तेऽहं गुरुर्मतः। नास्ति ते तपसानेन भयं चैवेह सुव्रत।
urva uvāca dhanyosmyanugṛhītosmi yasya te'haṁ gururmataḥ nāsti te tapasānena bhayaṁ caiveha suvrata
Urva said: 'I am blessed, I am favored, that I am regarded by you as a guru. Through this austerity, you need have no fear here, O one of good vows.'
Verse 117 (padma.1.41.117)
तामेव मायां गृह्णीष्व मम पुत्रेण निर्मिताम्। निरिंधिनामग्निमयीं दुःस्पर्शां पावकैरपि।
tāmeva māyāṁ gṛhṇīṣva mama putreṇa nirmitām niriṁdhināmagnimayīṁ duḥsparśāṁ pāvakairapi
'"Take that very illusion, fashioned by my son -- fireless yet made of fire, hard to touch even for fire itself."'
Verse 118 (padma.1.41.118)
एषा ते स्वस्य वंशस्य वशगारि विनिग्रहे। रक्षिष्यत्यात्मपक्षं च विपक्षं च प्रधक्ष्यति।
eṣā te svasya vaṁśasya vaśagāri vinigrahe rakṣiṣyatyātmapakṣaṁ ca vipakṣaṁ ca pradhakṣyati
'"This shall be at the command of your own lineage, for the suppression of the enemy; it shall protect your own side and consume the opposing side."'
Verse 119 (padma.1.41.119)
वरुण उवाच। एषा दुर्विषहा माया देवैरपि दुरासदा। और्वेण निर्मिता पूर्वं पावकेनोर्वसूनुना।
varuṇa uvāca eṣā durviṣahā māyā devairapi durāsadā aurveṇa nirmitā pūrvaṁ pāvakenorvasūnunā
Varuna said: 'This unbearable illusion, hard even for the gods to approach, was formerly fashioned by that fire Aurva, the son of Urva.'
Verse 120 (padma.1.41.120)
तस्मिंस्तु व्यथिते दैत्ये निर्वीर्यैषा न संशयः। शापो ह्यस्याः पुरा दत्तः सृष्टा येनैव तेजसा।
tasmiṁstu vyathite daitye nirvīryaiṣā na saṁśayaḥ śāpo hyasyāḥ purā dattaḥ sṛṣṭā yenaiva tejasā
'"When that Daitya is afflicted, this illusion becomes powerless, without doubt -- for a curse was formerly placed upon it, by the very power that created it."'
Verse 121 (padma.1.41.121)
यद्येषा प्रतिहंतव्या कर्तव्यो भगवान्सुखी। दीयतां मे सखो शक्र तोययोनिर्निशाकरः।
yadyeṣā pratihaṁtavyā kartavyo bhagavānsukhī dīyatāṁ me sakho śakra toyayonirniśākaraḥ
'"If this must be repelled, and the Lord made helpless, then let the moon, whose source is water, O friend Shakra, be given to me."'
Verse 122 (padma.1.41.122)
तेनाहं सहसं गम्य यादोभिश्च समावृतः। मायामेतां हनिष्यामि त्वत्प्रसादान्न संशयः।
tenāhaṁ sahasaṁ gamya yādobhiśca samāvṛtaḥ māyāmetāṁ haniṣyāmi tvatprasādānna saṁśayaḥ
'"With him, going forth swiftly, surrounded by the creatures of the waters, I shall destroy this illusion, by your grace -- there is no doubt."'
Verse 123 (padma.1.41.123)
एवमस्त्वितिसंहृष्टः शक्रस्त्रिदशवर्धनः। संदिदेशाग्रतः सोमं युद्धाय शिशिरायुधम्।
evamastvitisaṁhṛṣṭaḥ śakrastridaśavardhanaḥ saṁdideśāgrataḥ somaṁ yuddhāya śiśirāyudham
'"So be it," said Shakra, the increaser of the gods, greatly pleased; and he sent forth the Moon, wielder of the weapon of frost, to the front for battle.'

गच्छ सोम सहायन्त्वं कुरु पाशधरस्य वै। असुराणां विनाशाय जयार्थं त्रिदिवौकसाम्।
gaccha soma sahāyantvaṁ kuru pāśadharasya vai asurāṇāṁ vināśāya jayārthaṁ tridivaukasām
'"Go, O Soma, and become the ally of the noose-bearer, for the destruction of the asuras and the victory of the dwellers of heaven."'
Verse 125 (padma.1.41.125)
त्वं मतः प्रतिवीर्यश्च ज्योतिषामपि चेश्वरः। त्वन्मयान्सर्वलोकेषु रसान्वेदविदो विदुः।
tvaṁ mataḥ prativīryaśca jyotiṣāmapi ceśvaraḥ tvanmayānsarvalokeṣu rasānvedavido viduḥ
'"You are deemed equal in valor, and lord of the heavenly bodies besides; the knowers of the Veda know that the essences in all worlds are of your very nature."'
Verse 126 (padma.1.41.126)
त्वया समो न लोकेस्मिन्विद्यते शिशिरायुधः। क्षयवृद्धीतवाव्यक्तेसागरेचैवचांबरे।
tvayā samo na lokesminvidyate śiśirāyudhaḥ kṣayavṛddhītavāvyaktesāgarecaivacāṁbare
'"There exists in this world none equal to you, wielder of the frost-weapon; your waxing and waning are manifest in the ocean and the very sky."'
Verse 127 (padma.1.41.127)
प्रवर्तयस्यहोरात्रात्कालं संमोहयन्जगत्। लोकच्छायामयं लक्ष्म तवांकः शशविग्रहः।
pravartayasyahorātrātkālaṁ saṁmohayanjagat lokacchāyāmayaṁ lakṣma tavāṁkaḥ śaśavigrahaḥ
'"You set in motion time by day and night, bewildering the world; your mark, the shadow-mass upon you, is in the form of a hare."'
Verse 128 (padma.1.41.128)
न विदुः सोम ते मायां ये च नक्षत्रयोनयः। त्वमादित्यपथादूर्ध्वं ज्योतिषां चोपरिस्थितः।
na viduḥ soma te māyāṁ ye ca nakṣatrayonayaḥ tvamādityapathādūrdhvaṁ jyotiṣāṁ coparisthitaḥ
'"Even those who are the source of the constellations do not know your power, O Soma; you stand above the path of the sun, above all the heavenly bodies."'
Verse 129 (padma.1.41.129)
तमः प्रोत्सार्य सहसा भासयस्यखिलं जगत्। शीतभानुर्हिमतनुर्ज्योतिषामधिपः शशी।
tamaḥ protsārya sahasā bhāsayasyakhilaṁ jagat śītabhānurhimatanurjyotiṣāmadhipaḥ śaśī
'"Driving away darkness at once, you illumine the entire world -- cool-rayed, frost-bodied Shashin, lord of the heavenly bodies."'
Verse 130 (padma.1.41.130)
अपि तत्कालयोगात्मा इज्यो यज्ञरथोऽव्ययः। ओषधीशः क्रियायोनिरपां योनिरनुष्णगुः।
api tatkālayogātmā ijyo yajñaratho'vyayaḥ oṣadhīśaḥ kriyāyonirapāṁ yoniranuṣṇaguḥ
'"You are, moreover, one whose very self is joined with time, worthy of worship, the imperishable chariot of sacrifice, lord of the herbs, the source of ritual action, the source of the waters, whose rays are never hot."'
Verse 131 (padma.1.41.131)
शीतांशुरमृताधारश्चपलः श्वेतवाहनः। त्वं कांतिः कांतवपुषां त्वं सोमः सोमपायिनाम्।
śītāṁśuramṛtādhāraścapalaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ tvaṁ kāṁtiḥ kāṁtavapuṣāṁ tvaṁ somaḥ somapāyinām
'"Cool-rayed, the vessel of nectar, swift, drawn by white steeds -- you are the beauty of the beautiful, you are the Soma of those who drink the Soma."'
Verse 132 (padma.1.41.132)
सौम्यस्त्वं सर्वभूतानां तिमिरघ्नस्त्वमृक्षराट्। तद्गच्छ त्वं महासेन वरुणेन वरूथिना।
saumyastvaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ timiraghnastvamṛkṣarāṭ tadgaccha tvaṁ mahāsena varuṇena varūthinā
'"You are the gentle one of all beings, the destroyer of darkness, the king of the lunar mansions. Go, therefore, O great commander, together with Varuna and his host,"'
Verse 133 (padma.1.41.133)
शमयस्वासुरीं मायां यया दह्यामहे रणे। सोम उवाच। यन्मां वदसि युद्धार्थं देवराजवरप्रद।
śamayasvāsurīṁ māyāṁ yayā dahyāmahe raṇe soma uvāca yanmāṁ vadasi yuddhārthaṁ devarājavaraprada
'"and quell this demonic illusion by which we are being burned in battle." Soma said: "As for what you tell me, for the sake of battle, O king of gods, giver of boons,"'

एष वर्षामि शिशिरं दैत्यमायापकर्षणं। एतान्मे शीतनिर्दग्धान्पश्यस्व हिमवेष्टितान्।
eṣa varṣāmi śiśiraṁ daityamāyāpakarṣaṇaṁ etānme śītanirdagdhānpaśyasva himaveṣṭitān
'"here I shall rain down frost, to draw off the illusion of the Daityas; behold these Daityas of mine, burned by cold, wrapped in ice."'
Verse 135 (padma.1.41.135)
तथा हिमकरोत्सृष्टाः सपाशा हिमवृष्टयः। वेष्टयंति च तान्दैत्यान्वायुर्मेघगणानिव।
tathā himakarotsṛṣṭāḥ sapāśā himavṛṣṭayaḥ veṣṭayaṁti ca tāndaityānvāyurmeghagaṇāniva
'Thus, released by the maker of frost, showers of hail, together with nooses, enveloped those Daityas, as the wind envelops masses of cloud.'
Verse 136 (padma.1.41.136)
तौ पाशशीतांशुधरौ वरुणेंदू महाबलौ। जघ्नतुर्हिमपातैश्च पाशपातैश्च दानवान्।
tau pāśaśītāṁśudharau varuṇeṁdū mahābalau jaghnaturhimapātaiśca pāśapātaiśca dānavān
'Those two mighty ones, Varuna bearing the noose and the cool-rayed Moon, struck down the Danavas with falling hail and falling nooses.'
Verse 137 (padma.1.41.137)
द्वावंबुनाथौ समरे तौ पाशहिमयोधिनौ। मृधे चेरतुरंभोभिः क्षुब्धाविव महार्णवौ।
dvāvaṁbunāthau samare tau pāśahimayodhinau mṛdhe ceraturaṁbhobhiḥ kṣubdhāviva mahārṇavau
'Those two lords of water, fighting in battle with noose and ice, moved through the fray like two great agitated oceans with their waters.'
Verse 138 (padma.1.41.138)
ताभ्यामापूरितं सर्वं तद्दानवबलं महत्। जगत्संवर्त्तकांभोदैः प्रवर्षैरिव संवृतं।
tābhyāmāpūritaṁ sarvaṁ taddānavabalaṁ mahat jagatsaṁvarttakāṁbhodaiḥ pravarṣairiva saṁvṛtaṁ
'By them, that whole great army of Danavas was overwhelmed, as if covered by the torrential rains of the clouds that end an age.'
Verse 139 (padma.1.41.139)
तावुद्यतावंबुनाथौ शशांकवरुणावुभौ। शमयामासतुस्तां तु मायां दैत्येन्द्रनिर्मितां।
tāvudyatāvaṁbunāthau śaśāṁkavaruṇāvubhau śamayāmāsatustāṁ tu māyāṁ daityendranirmitāṁ
'Those two lords of water, the Moon and Varuna, both risen up, thus quelled that illusion fashioned by the lord of the Daityas.'
Verse 140 (padma.1.41.140)
शीतांशुजालनिर्दग्धाः पाशैश्चास्कंदिता रणे। न शेकुश्चलितुं दैत्या विशिरस्का इवाद्रयः।
śītāṁśujālanirdagdhāḥ pāśaiścāskaṁditā raṇe na śekuścalituṁ daityā viśiraskā ivādrayaḥ
'Burned by the net of the Moon's cold rays, and bound fast by nooses in battle, the Daityas could not move, like mountains shorn of their peaks.'
Verse 141 (padma.1.41.141)
शीतांशु निहतास्ते तु दैत्यास्सर्वे निपातिताः। हिमप्लावित सर्वांगानिरूष्माण इवाग्नयः।
śītāṁśu nihatāste tu daityāssarve nipātitāḥ himaplāvita sarvāṁgānirūṣmāṇa ivāgnayaḥ
'Struck by the cool-rayed one, all those Daityas were felled, their every limb drenched in frost, like fires deprived of their heat.'
Verse 142 (padma.1.41.142)
तेषां तु दिवि दैत्यानां निपतंति शुभानि वै। विमानानि विचित्राणि निपतंत्युत्पतंति च।
teṣāṁ tu divi daityānāṁ nipataṁti śubhāni vai vimānāni vicitrāṇi nipataṁtyutpataṁti ca
'And the splendid, wondrous aerial cars of those Daityas fell from the sky, falling down and shooting up again.'
Verse 143 (padma.1.41.143)
तान्पाशहस्तग्रथितान्छादितान्शीतरश्मिभिः। मयो ददर्श मायावी दानवान्दिवि दानवः।
tānpāśahastagrathitānchāditānśītaraśmibhiḥ mayo dadarśa māyāvī dānavāndivi dānavaḥ
'Seeing those Danavas bound fast by the noose in hand, covered by the cool rays, Maya, the illusionist Danava, beheld them in the sky.'
Verse 144 (padma.1.41.144)
सशैलजालां विततां खड्गपट्टसहासिनीम्। पादपोत्करकूटस्थां कंदराकीर्णकाननां।
saśailajālāṁ vitatāṁ khaḍgapaṭṭasahāsinīm pādapotkarakūṭasthāṁ kaṁdarākīrṇakānanāṁ
'He then created that illusion called Parvati -- vast with a network of mountains, with swords and sword-blades as its laughter, its peaks massed with clustered trees, its forests strewn with caves,'
Verse 145 (padma.1.41.145)
सिंहव्याघ्रगणाकीर्णां नदद्भिर्देवयूथपैः। ईहामृगगणाकीर्णां पवनाघूर्णितद्द्रुमाम्।
siṁhavyāghragaṇākīrṇāṁ nadadbhirdevayūthapaiḥ īhāmṛgagaṇākīrṇāṁ pavanāghūrṇitaddrumām
'thronged with lions and tigers roaring like troop-leaders of the gods, teeming with herds of wild beasts, its trees swaying in the wind,'
Verse 146 (padma.1.41.146)
निर्मितां स्वेन पुत्रेण कूजंतीं दिविकामगां। प्रथितां पार्वतीं मायां ससृजे स समंततः।
nirmitāṁ svena putreṇa kūjaṁtīṁ divikāmagāṁ prathitāṁ pārvatīṁ māyāṁ sasṛje sa samaṁtataḥ
'fashioned by his own son, its sound like a moving cry, ranging through the sky on every side -- he created, spreading wide, that widely-known illusion called Parvati.'
Verse 147 (padma.1.41.147)
सासिशब्दैश्शिलावर्षैः संपतद्भिश्च पादपैः। जघान देवसंघांस्ते दानवानभ्यजीवयत्।
sāsiśabdaiśśilāvarṣaiḥ saṁpatadbhiśca pādapaiḥ jaghāna devasaṁghāṁste dānavānabhyajīvayat
'With the clash of swords, showers of rocks, and falling trees, it struck down the hosts of gods, and gave renewed life to the Danavas.'
Verse 148 (padma.1.41.148)
नैशाकरी वारुणी च माये अंतर्हिते तदा। अभवद्घोरसंचारा पृथिवी पर्वतैरिव।
naiśākarī vāruṇī ca māye aṁtarhite tadā abhavadghorasaṁcārā pṛthivī parvatairiva
'When the illusions of the Moon and of Varuna had thus vanished, the earth became, as it were, a place of terrible movement, filled with mountains.'
Verse 149 (padma.1.41.149)
न चारुद्धो द्रुमगणैर्देवो दृश्यत कश्चन। तदपध्वस्तधनुषं भग्नप्रहरणाविलम्।
na cāruddho drumagaṇairdevo dṛśyata kaścana tadapadhvastadhanuṣaṁ bhagnapraharaṇāvilam
'No god at all could be seen, blocked as they were by that mass of trees; that army appeared with its bows shattered, its weapons broken and scattered,'
Verse 150 (padma.1.41.150)
निष्प्रयत्नं सुरानीकं वर्जयित्वा गदाधरं। स हि युद्धगतः श्रीमानीशो न स्म व्यकंपत।
niṣprayatnaṁ surānīkaṁ varjayitvā gadādharaṁ sa hi yuddhagataḥ śrīmānīśo na sma vyakaṁpata
'helpless, save for the mace-bearer; for that glorious Lord, engaged in the battle, did not tremble.'
Verse 151 (padma.1.41.151)
सहिष्णुत्वाज्जगत्स्वामी न चुक्रोध गदाधरः। कालज्ञः कालमेघाभः समीक्षन्कालमाहवे।
sahiṣṇutvājjagatsvāmī na cukrodha gadādharaḥ kālajñaḥ kālameghābhaḥ samīkṣankālamāhave
'Through his very forbearance, the mace-bearer, lord of the world, did not grow angry; knowing the right time, dark as a storm-cloud, he watched for his moment in that battle.'
Verse 152 (padma.1.41.152)
देवासुरविमर्दं च द्रष्टुकामस्तदा हरिः। ततो भगवतादिष्टौ रणे पावकमारुतौ।
devāsuravimardaṁ ca draṣṭukāmastadā hariḥ tato bhagavatādiṣṭau raṇe pāvakamārutau
'Hari, wishing then to observe the clash of gods and asuras, waited. Then, commanded by that Lord, Fire and Wind in that battle,'
Verse 153 (padma.1.41.153)
चोदितौ विष्णुवाक्येन ततो मायां व्यकर्षतां। ताभ्यामुद्भ्रांतवेगाभ्यां प्रबुद्धाभ्यां महाहवे।
coditau viṣṇuvākyena tato māyāṁ vyakarṣatāṁ tābhyāmudbhrāṁtavegābhyāṁ prabuddhābhyāṁ mahāhave

'All the gods beheld that Kalanemi in the battle, the very doom of his enemies, their eyes wild with fear.'

'All beings beheld that devouring Kalanemi, mighty in valor, like a second Narayana of the three strides.'

'Having met and grappled with the king of gods, moving about in the battle, the Daitya Kalanemi shone like Mount Mandara together with Vishnu.'

ब्रह्मांडं च भुवं चैव दिशश्च समपूरयन्। ज्याघाततलनिर्घोष धनुषां कूजितानि च।
brahmāṁḍaṁ ca bhuvaṁ caiva diśaśca samapūrayan jyāghātatalanirghoṣa dhanuṣāṁ kūjitāni ca
'They filled the cosmic egg, the earth, and the directions; and the twang of bowstrings struck by the palm, the humming of bows,'

'swords, and heavy maces the Danavas hurled in that battle; with limbs broken by the fall of maces, and shattered into fragments by arrows,'

'some fell violently, and others struck again in turn; then with chariots, horses, aerial cars, and foot-soldiers,'

'they came together, greatly enraged, against one another in that battle, whirling about, their lips bitten in fury --'

'chariots fought with chariots, and foot-soldiers with foot-soldiers; the tumultuous noise of those chariots, sound-bearing as they were,'

नभो निदद्ध्वानयथा नभस्ये जलदस्वनैः। बभंजिरे रथान्केचित्केचित्संमृदिता रथैः।
nabho nidaddhvānayathā nabhasye jaladasvanaiḥ babhaṁjire rathānkecitkecitsaṁmṛditā rathaiḥ
'filled the sky like the sound of rain-clouds; some shattered chariots, and others were crushed by chariots.'

संबाधमन्ये संप्राप्ता न शेकुश्चलितुं रथाः। अन्योन्य मध्ये समरे दोर्भ्यामुत्क्षिप्य दंशिताः।
saṁbādhamanye saṁprāptā na śekuścalituṁ rathāḥ anyonya madhye samare dorbhyāmutkṣipya daṁśitāḥ
'Others, caught in the press, found their chariots unable to move; armored warriors, seizing one another with their arms in the midst of the battle,'

संह्रादमाणास्सबला जघ्नुस्तत्रासि चर्मिणः। अस्त्रैरन्ये विनिर्भिन्ना रक्तं वेमुर्हतायुधि।
saṁhrādamāṇāssabalā jaghnustatrāsi carmiṇaḥ astrairanye vinirbhinnā raktaṁ vemurhatāyudhi
'roaring together with their forces, struck each other there, sword and shield in hand; others, pierced by weapons, vomited blood as they were struck down in that battle.'

क्षरज्जलानां सदृशा जलदानां समागताः। अन्योन्यबाणवर्षेण युद्धदुर्दिनमाबभौ।
kṣarajjalānāṁ sadṛśā jaladānāṁ samāgatāḥ anyonyabāṇavarṣeṇa yuddhadurdinamābabhau
'Come together like massed clouds pouring rain, the battle, with its mutual showers of arrows, appeared like a stormy, overcast day.'

एतस्मिन्नंतरे क्रुद्धः कालनेमिस्स दानवः। अवर्धत समुद्रौघैः पूर्यमाण इवांबुदः।
etasminnaṁtare kruddhaḥ kālanemissa dānavaḥ avardhata samudraughaiḥ pūryamāṇa ivāṁbudaḥ
'Meanwhile, that enraged Danava Kalanemi grew, like a cloud swelling with the floods of the ocean.'

तस्य विद्युल्लतापीडाः प्रदीप्ताशनिवर्षिणः। गात्रैर्नगगिरिप्रख्यैर्विनिपेतुर्बलाहकाः।
tasya vidyullatāpīḍāḥ pradīptāśanivarṣiṇaḥ gātrairnagagiriprakhyairvinipeturbalāhakāḥ
'From his limbs, resembling mountains and hills, storm-clouds fell forth, tormenting with lightning-vines and raining blazing thunderbolts.'

क्रोधान्निश्वसतस्तस्य भ्रूभेदस्वेदवर्षिणः। साग्निस्फुलिंगाः प्रतता मुखान्निश्चेरुरर्चिषः।
krodhānniśvasatastasya bhrūbhedasvedavarṣiṇaḥ sāgnisphuliṁgāḥ pratatā mukhānniścerurarciṣaḥ
'As he breathed hard in anger, sweat pouring from the furrow of his brow, spreading flames, mixed with sparks of fire, burst forth from his mouth.'

तिर्यगूर्ध्वं च गगने ववृधुस्तस्य बाहवः। पर्वतादिव निष्क्रांताः पंचास्या इव पन्नगाः।
tiryagūrdhvaṁ ca gagane vavṛdhustasya bāhavaḥ parvatādiva niṣkrāṁtāḥ paṁcāsyā iva pannagāḥ
'Sideways and upward into the sky his arms grew, like five-headed serpents emerging from a mountain.'

सोऽस्त्रजालैर्बहुविधैर्धनुर्भिः परिघैरपि। दिव्यमाकाशमावव्रे पर्वतैरुच्छ्रितैरिव।
so'strajālairbahuvidhairdhanurbhiḥ parighairapi divyamākāśamāvavre parvatairucchritairiva
'With his manifold nets of weapons, bows, and iron bars, he covered the divine sky, as if with towering mountains.'

सोनिलोद्भूतवसनस्तस्थौ संग्रामलालसः। संध्यातपग्रस्तशिलः साक्षान्मेरुरिवाचलः।
sonilodbhūtavasanastasthau saṁgrāmalālasaḥ saṁdhyātapagrastaśilaḥ sākṣānmerurivācalaḥ
'His garments stirred up by the very wind he raised, he stood, eager for battle, like Mount Meru itself, its rocks seized by the glow of twilight's sun.'

ऊरुवेगप्रमथितैः शृंगशैलाग्रपादपैः। अपातयद्देवगणान्वज्रेणेव महागिरीन्।
ūruvegapramathitaiḥ śṛṁgaśailāgrapādapaiḥ apātayaddevagaṇānvajreṇeva mahāgirīn
'With mountain-peaks and their crowning trees, torn loose by the very force of his thighs, he struck down the hosts of gods, as if with a thunderbolt striking great mountains.'

बाहुभिश्च सनिस्त्रिंशैश्छिन्नभिन्नशिरोरुहाः। न शेकुश्चलितुं देवाः कालनेमिहता युधि।
bāhubhiśca sanistriṁśaiśchinnabhinnaśiroruhāḥ na śekuścalituṁ devāḥ kālanemihatā yudhi
'With his sword-bearing arms, their very hair cut and torn, the gods, struck by Kalanemi, could not move in that battle.'

मुष्टिभिर्निहताः केचित्केचिच्च द्विदलीकृताः। यक्षगंधर्वपतगाः समहोरगकिन्नराः।
muṣṭibhirnihatāḥ kecitkecicca dvidalīkṛtāḥ yakṣagaṁdharvapatagāḥ samahoragakinnarāḥ
'Some were struck down by his fists, and others split in two -- Yakshas, Gandharvas, birds, great serpents, and Kinnaras together,'

तेन वित्रासिताः पेतुः समरे कालनेमिना। न शेकुर्यत्नवंतोपि यत्नं कर्तुं विचेतसः।
tena vitrāsitāḥ petuḥ samare kālaneminā na śekuryatnavaṁtopi yatnaṁ kartuṁ vicetasaḥ
'terrified by that Kalanemi, fell in the battle; even those who tried could not, in their bewilderment, manage any effort.'

तेन शक्रः सहस्राक्षोऽस्पंदितः शरबंधनैः। निष्प्रयत्नः कृतः संख्ये चलितुं न शशाक ह।
tena śakraḥ sahasrākṣo'spaṁditaḥ śarabaṁdhanaiḥ niṣprayatnaḥ kṛtaḥ saṁkhye calituṁ na śaśāka ha
'By him, the thousand-eyed Shakra was left motionless, bound fast by arrows; rendered helpless in that battle, he was unable to move at all.'

निर्जलांभोदसदृशो निर्जलार्णवसप्रभः। निर्व्यापारः कृतस्तेन विपाशो वरुणो मृधे।
nirjalāṁbhodasadṛśo nirjalārṇavasaprabhaḥ nirvyāpāraḥ kṛtastena vipāśo varuṇo mṛdhe
'Made like a rain-cloud without water, like an ocean drained dry, Varuna, his noose gone, was rendered helpless by him in that battle.'

रणे वैश्रवणस्तेन परीतः कालरूपिणा। विलपन्लोकपालेशस्त्याजितो धनदः क्रियां।
raṇe vaiśravaṇastena parītaḥ kālarūpiṇā vilapanlokapāleśastyājito dhanadaḥ kriyāṁ
'In that battle, Vaishravana was overwhelmed by him, who bore the very form of Death; that lord of the world-guardians, Dhanada, lamenting, was made to abandon his function.'

यमः सर्वहरस्तेन मृत्युप्रहरणो रणे। याम्यामवस्थां संत्यज्य भीतः स्वां दिशमाविशत्।
yamaḥ sarvaharastena mṛtyupraharaṇo raṇe yāmyāmavasthāṁ saṁtyajya bhītaḥ svāṁ diśamāviśat
'Yama, the taker of all, whose very weapon is death, in that battle abandoned his southern station and, afraid, retreated into his own quarter.'

सलोकपालानुत्सार्य हृत्वा तेषां च कर्म तत्। दिक्षु सर्वासु देहं स्वं चतुर्धा विदधे तदा।
salokapālānutsārya hṛtvā teṣāṁ ca karma tat dikṣu sarvāsu dehaṁ svaṁ caturdhā vidadhe tadā
'Having driven off the guardians of the world and seized their very functions, he then divided his own body fourfold across all the directions.'

स नक्षत्रपथं गत्वा दिव्यं स्वर्भानुदर्शितं। जहार लक्ष्मीं सोमस्य यच्चास्य विषयं महत्।
sa nakṣatrapathaṁ gatvā divyaṁ svarbhānudarśitaṁ jahāra lakṣmīṁ somasya yaccāsya viṣayaṁ mahat
'Going to the divine path of the constellations, shown to him by Svarbhanu, he seized the very splendor of Soma, and that great domain of his.'

चालयामास दीप्तांशुं धर्मद्वारा सभास्करं। शासनं चास्य विषयं जहार दिनकर्म च।
cālayāmāsa dīptāṁśuṁ dharmadvārā sabhāskaraṁ śāsanaṁ cāsya viṣayaṁ jahāra dinakarma ca
'He shook the blazing-rayed one, together with the Sun who is the gateway of dharma, and seized his rule, his domain, and the very work of the day.'

सोग्निं देवमुखं जित्वा चकारात्ममुखाश्रयं। वायुं च तरसा जित्वा चकारात्मवशानुगं।
sogniṁ devamukhaṁ jitvā cakārātmamukhāśrayaṁ vāyuṁ ca tarasā jitvā cakārātmavaśānugaṁ
'Having conquered Agni, the very mouth of the gods, he made him take refuge in his own mouth; and having swiftly conquered Vayu too, he made him follow his own command.'

स समुद्रात्समानीय समस्ताः सरितो बलात्। चकाराभिसुखावीर्या देहभूताश्च सिंधवः।
sa samudrātsamānīya samastāḥ sarito balāt cakārābhisukhāvīryā dehabhūtāśca siṁdhavaḥ
'Drawing forth all the rivers by force from the ocean, he made the very oceans, become part of his own body, subservient to his pleasure and power.'

अपः स्ववशगाः कृत्वा दिविजायाश्च भूमिजाः। छादयामास जगतीं सुगुप्तां धरणीधरैः।
apaḥ svavaśagāḥ kṛtvā divijāyāśca bhūmijāḥ chādayāmāsa jagatīṁ suguptāṁ dharaṇīdharaiḥ
'Having brought the waters, both those of heaven and those born of earth, under his own sway, he covered the earth, well-guarded by mountains, with his own presence.'

स स्वयंभूरिवाभाति महाभूतपतिर्महान्। सर्वलोकमयो दैत्यः सर्वलोकभयावहः।
sa svayaṁbhūrivābhāti mahābhūtapatirmahān sarvalokamayo daityaḥ sarvalokabhayāvahaḥ
'He shone as if he were the Self-Existent himself, that great lord of the great elements, that Daitya, embodying all the worlds, bringing terror to all the worlds.'

स लोकपालैकवपुश्चंद्रसूर्यग्रहात्मवान्। पावकानिलसंभूतो रराज युधि दानवः।
sa lokapālaikavapuścaṁdrasūryagrahātmavān pāvakānilasaṁbhūto rarāja yudhi dānavaḥ
'That Danava, his single form now that of all the world-guardians, his very self the moon, sun, and planets, arisen from fire and wind, shone forth in that battle.'

पारमेष्ठ्ये स्थितः स्थाने लोकानां प्रभवोपमे। तं तुष्टुवुर्दैत्यगणा देवा इव पितामहं।
pārameṣṭhye sthitaḥ sthāne lokānāṁ prabhavopame taṁ tuṣṭuvurdaityagaṇā devā iva pitāmahaṁ
'Established in the supreme station, resembling the very source of the worlds, the hosts of Daityas praised him, as the gods praise the Grandsire.'

पंच तं नाभ्यवर्तंत विपरीतेन कर्मणा। वेदो धर्मः क्षमा सत्यं श्रीश्च नारायणाश्रया।
paṁca taṁ nābhyavartaṁta viparītena karmaṇā vedo dharmaḥ kṣamā satyaṁ śrīśca nārāyaṇāśrayā
'Five things, however, did not turn toward him, through the reversal of his deed: the Veda, Dharma, patience, truth, and Shri -- all resting upon Narayana.'

स तेषामनुपस्थानात्सक्रोधो दानवेश्वरः। वैष्णवं पदमन्विच्छन्स गतो देवतायतः।
sa teṣāmanupasthānātsakrodho dānaveśvaraḥ vaiṣṇavaṁ padamanvicchansa gato devatāyataḥ
'That lord of the Danavas, angered by their absence, seeking out the very station of Vishnu, went to the abode of that god.'

स ददर्श सुपर्णस्थं शंखचक्रगदाधरं। दानवानां विनाशाय भ्रामयंतं गदां शुभां।
sa dadarśa suparṇasthaṁ śaṁkhacakragadādharaṁ dānavānāṁ vināśāya bhrāmayaṁtaṁ gadāṁ śubhāṁ
'There he saw him, seated upon Suparna, bearing conch, discus, and mace, whirling his splendid mace for the destruction of the Danavas,'

सजलांभोदसदृशं विद्युत्सदृशवाससं। आरूढं स्वर्णपत्राढ्यं खेचरं काश्यपं खगं।
sajalāṁbhodasadṛśaṁ vidyutsadṛśavāsasaṁ ārūḍhaṁ svarṇapatrāḍhyaṁ khecaraṁ kāśyapaṁ khagaṁ
'dark as a rain-cloud full of water, clad in garments bright as lightning, mounted upon that sky-going bird of Kashyapa, rich with golden feathers.'

दुष्टदैत्यविनाशाय दृष्ट्वा खस्थमिवस्थितं। दानवो विष्णुमक्षोभ्यं बभाषे क्षुब्धमानसः।
duṣṭadaityavināśāya dṛṣṭvā khasthamivasthitaṁ dānavo viṣṇumakṣobhyaṁ babhāṣe kṣubdhamānasaḥ
'Seeing him, unshakeable, stationed as if in the sky, ready for the destruction of wicked Daityas, that Danava, his own mind agitated, addressed Vishnu:'

अयं स रिपुरस्माकं पूर्वेषां प्राणनाशनः। अर्णवावासिनश्चैव मधोश्च कैटभस्य च।
ayaṁ sa ripurasmākaṁ pūrveṣāṁ prāṇanāśanaḥ arṇavāvāsinaścaiva madhośca kaiṭabhasya ca
'"This is that very enemy of ours, the destroyer of the lives of our forefathers -- of those two dwellers in the ocean, Madhu and Kaitabha."'

अयं स रिपुरस्माकमसमः किल कथ्यते। अनेकसंयुगेनेन दानवा बहवो हताः।
ayaṁ sa ripurasmākamasamaḥ kila kathyate anekasaṁyugenena dānavā bahavo hatāḥ
'"This is said to be that very peerless enemy of ours; by him, in many battles, many Danavas have been slain."'

अयं स निर्घृणो लोके स्त्रीबालनिरपत्त्रपः। येन दानवनारीणां सीमंतोद्वरणं कृतम्।
ayaṁ sa nirghṛṇo loke strībālanirapattrapaḥ yena dānavanārīṇāṁ sīmaṁtodvaraṇaṁ kṛtam
'"This is that merciless one in the world, without shame before women and children, by whom the parting of the hair of Danava women has been undone."'

अयं स विष्णुर्देवानां वैकुंठश्च दिवौकसाम्। अनंतो भोगिनां मध्ये स्वयंभूश्च स्वयंभुवः।
ayaṁ sa viṣṇurdevānāṁ vaikuṁṭhaśca divaukasām anaṁto bhogināṁ madhye svayaṁbhūśca svayaṁbhuvaḥ
'"This is that Vishnu of the gods, that Vaikuntha of the dwellers of heaven, that Ananta among serpents, that self-existent one among the self-existent."'

अयं स नाथो देवानामस्माभिर्विप्रकृष्यते। अस्य क्रोधं समासाद्य हिरण्यकशिपुर्हतः।
ayaṁ sa nātho devānāmasmābhirviprakṛṣyate asya krodhaṁ samāsādya hiraṇyakaśipurhataḥ
'"This is that very lord of the gods, being now drawn out by us. By encountering his wrath, Hiranyakashipu was slain."'

अस्यच्छायामुपाश्रित्य देवा मखमुखे स्थिताः। आज्यं महर्षिभिर्दत्तमश्नुवंति त्रिधा हुतम्।
asyacchāyāmupāśritya devā makhamukhe sthitāḥ ājyaṁ maharṣibhirdattamaśnuvaṁti tridhā hutam
'"Taking refuge in his very shadow, the gods, standing at the head of the sacrifice, partake of the ghee offered by the great sages, poured threefold into the fire."'

अयं स निधने हेतुः सर्वेषाममरद्विषाम्। अस्य चक्रप्रविष्टानि कुलान्यस्माकमाहवे।
ayaṁ sa nidhane hetuḥ sarveṣāmamaradviṣām asya cakrapraviṣṭāni kulānyasmākamāhave
'"This is the very cause of the destruction of all the enemies of the immortals; our own lineages have entered his discus in battle."'

अयं स किल युद्धेषु सुरार्थे त्यक्तजीवितः। स विभुस्तेजसा युक्तं चक्रं क्षिपति शत्रुषु।
ayaṁ sa kila yuddheṣu surārthe tyaktajīvitaḥ sa vibhustejasā yuktaṁ cakraṁ kṣipati śatruṣu
'"This is indeed the one who, in battles, has given up his life for the gods' sake; that mighty one hurls his discus, joined with his own splendor, at his foes."'

अयं स कालो दैत्यानां कालभूते मयि स्थिते। अतिक्रांतस्य कालस्य फलं प्राप्स्यति केशवः।
ayaṁ sa kālo daityānāṁ kālabhūte mayi sthite atikrāṁtasya kālasya phalaṁ prāpsyati keśavaḥ
'"He is that very Time of the Daityas; but with me, who am Time itself, now present, Keshava shall now reap the fruit of the time he has surpassed."'

दिष्ट्येदानीं समक्षं मे विष्णुरेष समागतः। निष्पिष्टो बहुना संख्ये मय्येव प्रणशिष्यति।
diṣṭyedānīṁ samakṣaṁ me viṣṇureṣa samāgataḥ niṣpiṣṭo bahunā saṁkhye mayyeva praṇaśiṣyati
'"By good fortune, this Vishnu has now come before my very eyes; crushed thoroughly in this battle, he shall perish at my very hands."'

यास्याम्यपचितिं दिष्ट्या पूर्वेषामद्य संयुगे। इमन्नारायणं हत्वा दानवानां भयावहम्।
yāsyāmyapacitiṁ diṣṭyā pūrveṣāmadya saṁyuge imannārāyaṇaṁ hatvā dānavānāṁ bhayāvaham
'"By good fortune, I shall today, in this battle, discharge my debt of honor to my ancestors, by slaying this Narayana, who brings terror to the Danavas."'

क्षिप्रमेव हनिष्यामि रणेऽमरगणानहम्। जात्यंतरगतोप्येष बाधते दानवान्मृधे।
kṣiprameva haniṣyāmi raṇe'maragaṇānaham jātyaṁtaragatopyeṣa bādhate dānavānmṛdhe
'"I shall swiftly slay the hosts of the immortals in this battle. Even having taken a different birth each time, this one continues to trouble the Danavas in battle."'

एषोऽनंतः पुरा भूत्वा पद्मनाभ इति श्रुतः। जघानैकार्णवे घोरे तावुभौ मधुकैटभौ।
eṣo'naṁtaḥ purā bhūtvā padmanābha iti śrutaḥ jaghānaikārṇave ghore tāvubhau madhukaiṭabhau
'"This one, having formerly become Ananta, known as Padmanabha, slew both Madhu and Kaitabha in that terrible single ocean."'

'"Now once more, in this present Tarakamaya battle, having encountered me, that god shall perish."'

एवमुक्त्वा बहुविधं क्षिप्रं नारायणं रणे। वाग्भिरप्रतिरूपाभिर्युद्धमेवाभ्यरोचयत्।
evamuktvā bahuvidhaṁ kṣipraṁ nārāyaṇaṁ raṇe vāgbhirapratirūpābhiryuddhamevābhyarocayat
'Having thus spoken in many ways, swiftly, to Narayana in that battle, with words most unfitting, he provoked him only to fight.'

क्षिप्यमाणोऽसुरेंद्रेण न चुकोप गदाधरः। क्षमाबलेन महता सस्मितं चेदमब्रवीत्।
kṣipyamāṇo'sureṁdreṇa na cukopa gadādharaḥ kṣamābalena mahatā sasmitaṁ cedamabravīt
'Though thus reviled by that lord of asuras, the mace-bearer did not grow angry; by the great strength of his forbearance, he replied, smiling, with these words:'

अल्पं दर्पबलं दैत्य स्थिरमक्रोधजं बलम्। हतस्त्वं दर्पजैर्दोषैर्हित्वा यो भाषसे क्षमाम्।
alpaṁ darpabalaṁ daitya sthiramakrodhajaṁ balam hatastvaṁ darpajairdoṣairhitvā yo bhāṣase kṣamām
'"The strength born of pride is a slight thing, O Daitya; the strength born of freedom from anger is what endures. You are already undone by the very faults born of pride, you who speak of forgiveness while abandoning it."'

अधमस्त्वं मम मतो धिगेतत्तव वाग्बलम्। के तत्र पुरुषाः संति यत्र गर्जंति योषितः।
adhamastvaṁ mama mato dhigetattava vāgbalam ke tatra puruṣāḥ saṁti yatra garjaṁti yoṣitaḥ
'"I consider you base; shame on this mere strength of your words. What men indeed are there, where women merely roar?"'

अहं त्वां दैत्य पश्यामि पूर्वेषां मार्गगामिनम्। प्रजापतिं कृतं सेतुं त्यक्त्वा कः स्वस्तिमान्भवेत्।
ahaṁ tvāṁ daitya paśyāmi pūrveṣāṁ mārgagāminam prajāpatiṁ kṛtaṁ setuṁ tyaktvā kaḥ svastimānbhavet
'"I see you, O Daitya, following the very path of your forefathers. Who, having abandoned the bounds set by Prajapati, can ever prosper?"'

अद्य त्वां नाशयिष्यामि देवव्यापारघातकम्। स्वेषु स्वेषु च स्थानेषु स्थापयिष्यामि देवताः।
adya tvāṁ nāśayiṣyāmi devavyāpāraghātakam sveṣu sveṣu ca sthāneṣu sthāpayiṣyāmi devatāḥ
'"Today I shall destroy you, disruptor of the gods' proper functions, and shall re-establish the gods each in his own station."'

एवं ब्रुवति वाक्यं तु मृधे श्रीवत्सधारिणि। जहास दानवः क्रोधाद्धस्तांश्चक्रेण सायुधान्।
evaṁ bruvati vākyaṁ tu mṛdhe śrīvatsadhāriṇi jahāsa dānavaḥ krodhāddhastāṁścakreṇa sāyudhān
'As the bearer of the Shrivatsa spoke thus in that battle, the Danava, in his fury, laughed at those hands of his, armed with the discus.'

स बाहुशतमुद्यम्य सर्वायुधगणान्रणे। क्रोधाद्विगुणरक्ताक्षो विष्णोर्वक्षस्य पातयत्।
sa bāhuśatamudyamya sarvāyudhagaṇānraṇe krodhādviguṇaraktākṣo viṣṇorvakṣasya pātayat
'Raising his hundred arms, with all their arrays of weapons, in that battle, his eyes doubly red with rage, he brought them down upon Vishnu's chest.'

दानवाश्चापि समरे मयतारपुरोगमाः। उद्यतायुधनिस्त्रिंशा विष्णुमभ्यद्रवन्रणे।
dānavāścāpi samare mayatārapurogamāḥ udyatāyudhanistriṁśā viṣṇumabhyadravanraṇe
'And the Danavas too, with Maya and Tara at their head, their swords and weapons raised, rushed upon Vishnu in that battle.'

स ताड्यमानोऽतिबलैर्दैत्यैः सर्वायुधोद्यतैः। न चचाल ततो युद्धे कंप्यमान इवाचलः।
sa tāḍyamāno'tibalairdaityaiḥ sarvāyudhodyataiḥ na cacāla tato yuddhe kaṁpyamāna ivācalaḥ
'Though struck by those exceedingly powerful Daityas, all their weapons raised, he did not waver in that battle, like a mountain that only seems to tremble.'

संयुक्तश्च सुपर्णेन कालनेमिर्महासुरः। सर्वप्राणेन महतीं गदामुद्यम्य बाहुभिः।
saṁyuktaśca suparṇena kālanemirmahāsuraḥ sarvaprāṇena mahatīṁ gadāmudyamya bāhubhiḥ
'Then that great asura Kalanemi, engaging with Suparna, raising his great mace with all his strength, with his many arms,'

घोरां ज्वलंतीं मुमुचे संरब्धो गरुडोपरि। कर्मणा तेन दैत्यस्य विष्णुर्विस्मयमागमत्।
ghorāṁ jvalaṁtīṁ mumuce saṁrabdho garuḍopari karmaṇā tena daityasya viṣṇurvismayamāgamat
'hurled it, terrible and blazing, in fury, upon Garuda. By that deed of the Daitya, Vishnu was struck with astonishment.'

तदा तेन सुपर्णस्य पातिता मूर्ध्नि सा गदा। सुपर्णं व्यथितं दृष्ट्वा क्षतं च वपुरात्मनः।
tadā tena suparṇasya pātitā mūrdhni sā gadā suparṇaṁ vyathitaṁ dṛṣṭvā kṣataṁ ca vapurātmanaḥ
'That mace, hurled by him, struck upon the very head of Suparna. Seeing Suparna afflicted, and his own body wounded,'

क्रोधसंरक्तनयनो वैकुंठश्चक्रमाददे। व्यवर्द्धत च वेगेन सुपर्णेन समं विभुः।
krodhasaṁraktanayano vaikuṁṭhaścakramādade vyavarddhata ca vegena suparṇena samaṁ vibhuḥ
'his eyes red with anger, Vaikuntha took up his discus; and that mighty one, together with Suparna, swelled up with sudden force.'

भुजाश्चास्य व्यवर्धंत व्याप्तवंतो दिशो दश। विदिशश्चैव खं चापि गां चैव प्रतिपूरयन्।
bhujāścāsya vyavardhaṁta vyāptavaṁto diśo daśa vidiśaścaiva khaṁ cāpi gāṁ caiva pratipūrayan
'His arms grew vast, pervading the ten directions; the intermediate directions too, and the sky, and the very earth, he filled entirely.'

ववृधे स पुनर्लोकान्क्रांतुकाम इवौजसा। तं जयाय सुरेंद्राणां वर्द्धमानं नभस्तले।
vavṛdhe sa punarlokānkrāṁtukāma ivaujasā taṁ jayāya sureṁdrāṇāṁ varddhamānaṁ nabhastale
'He grew again, as if desiring, by his own power, to stride across the worlds. As he swelled thus in the sky, for the victory of the lords of the gods --'

ॠषयः सह गंधर्वास्तुष्टुवुर्मधुसूदनम्। सद्यां किरीटेन लिखन्शिरसा भास्वरेण च।
ṝṣayaḥ saha gaṁdharvāstuṣṭuvurmadhusūdanam sadyāṁ kirīṭena likhanśirasā bhāsvareṇa ca
'the sages, together with the Gandharvas, praised Madhusudana, whose radiant head, crowned with its diadem, seemed to scrape the very sky.'

पद्भ्यामाक्रम्यवसुधां दिशः प्रच्छाद्य बाहुभिः। सहस्रकरतुल्याभं सहस्रारमरिक्षयम्।
padbhyāmākramyavasudhāṁ diśaḥ pracchādya bāhubhiḥ sahasrakaratulyābhaṁ sahasrāramarikṣayam
'Setting his feet upon the earth, covering the directions with his arms, he took up that discus, resembling in radiance a thousand hands, of a thousand spokes, the destroyer of foes,'

दीप्ताग्निसदृशं घोरंदर्शनेन सुदर्शनम्। सुवर्णरेणुपर्यंतं वज्रनाभं भयावहं।

'blazing like fire, terrible to behold, yet Sudarshana, its rim of gold dust, its hub like the thunderbolt, bringing terror,'

'sprinkled with the fat, bone, marrow, and blood of slaughtered Danavas, a weapon without equal, its circular rim edged like a razor,'

स्रग्दाममालानिचितं कामगं कामरूपिणं। स्वयं स्वयंभुवा सृष्टं भयदं सर्वविद्विषाम्।
sragdāmamālānicitaṁ kāmagaṁ kāmarūpiṇaṁ svayaṁ svayaṁbhuvā sṛṣṭaṁ bhayadaṁ sarvavidviṣām
'hung with garlands of flowers, able to go wherever it willed and take any shape, created by the Self-Existent himself, bringing terror to every enemy --'

दधार रोषेणाविष्टं नित्यमाहवदर्पितं। क्षेपणाद्यस्य मुह्यंति लोकाः सस्थाणुजंगमाः।
dadhāra roṣeṇāviṣṭaṁ nityamāhavadarpitaṁ kṣepaṇādyasya muhyaṁti lokāḥ sasthāṇujaṁgamāḥ
'he bore that discus, now filled with wrath, ever eager for battle, at whose very hurling the worlds, moving and unmoving, fall into confusion,'

क्रव्यादानि च भूतानि तृप्तिं यांति महामृधे। तमप्रतिमकर्माणं समानं सूर्यवर्चसा।
kravyādāni ca bhūtāni tṛptiṁ yāṁti mahāmṛdhe tamapratimakarmāṇaṁ samānaṁ sūryavarcasā
'and at which flesh-eating creatures find their fill in that great battle. That discus of unrivaled deed, equal in splendor to the sun --'

चक्रमुद्यम्य समरे कोपदीप्तो गदाधरः। प्रणष्टं दानवं तेजः कुर्वाणं स्वेन तेजसा।
cakramudyamya samare kopadīpto gadādharaḥ praṇaṣṭaṁ dānavaṁ tejaḥ kurvāṇaṁ svena tejasā
'the mace-bearer, blazing with wrath, raising that discus in battle, directed it against that Danava's now vanquished splendor, itself overcome by his own splendor,'

चिच्छेद बाहूंस्तेनैव समरे कालनेमिनः। तच्च वक्त्रशतं घोरं साग्निचूर्णाट्टहासि वै।
ciccheda bāhūṁstenaiva samare kālaneminaḥ tacca vaktraśataṁ ghoraṁ sāgnicūrṇāṭṭahāsi vai
'and with it cut off, in that battle, the very arms of Kalanemi -- and likewise that terrible array of a hundred faces, laughing with fiery sparks.'

तस्य दैत्यस्य चक्रेण प्रममाथ बलाद्धरिः। सच्छिन्नबाहुर्विशिरानप्राकंपत दानवः।
tasya daityasya cakreṇa pramamātha balāddhariḥ sacchinnabāhurviśirānaprākaṁpata dānavaḥ
'With his discus, Hari forcibly crushed that Daitya; his arms severed, his heads gone, that Danava did not even tremble.'

कबंधावस्थितः संख्ये विशाखइव पादपः। तंवितत्य महापक्षौ वायोः कृत्वा समं जवम्।
kabaṁdhāvasthitaḥ saṁkhye viśākhaiva pādapaḥ taṁvitatya mahāpakṣau vāyoḥ kṛtvā samaṁ javam
'Standing as a mere headless trunk in that battle, like a tree with its branches lopped off -- spreading wide his two great wings, matching the very speed of the wind,'

उरसा ताडयामास गरुडः कालनेमिनं। स तस्य देहोभिमुखो विबाहुः खात्परिभ्रमन्।
urasā tāḍayāmāsa garuḍaḥ kālaneminaṁ sa tasya dehobhimukho vibāhuḥ khātparibhraman
'Garuda struck Kalanemi full upon the chest with his own breast. That armless body of his, whirling from the sky, facing toward him,'

निपपात दिवं त्यक्त्वा क्षोभयन्धरणीतलम्। तस्मिन्निपतिते दैत्ये देवाः सर्षिगणास्तथा।
nipapāta divaṁ tyaktvā kṣobhayandharaṇītalam tasminnipatite daitye devāḥ sarṣigaṇāstathā
'fell, forsaking heaven, shaking the very surface of the earth. When that Daitya had fallen, the gods, together with the hosts of sages,'

साधुसाध्विति वैकुंठं समेताः प्रत्यपूजयन्। अपरे ये तु दैत्या वै युद्धे दृष्टपराक्रमाः।
sādhusādhviti vaikuṁṭhaṁ sametāḥ pratyapūjayan apare ye tu daityā vai yuddhe dṛṣṭaparākramāḥ
'gathered together and worshipped Vaikuntha, crying "Well done, well done!" But those other Daityas, whose valor had been proven in the battle --'

ते सर्वे बाहुभिर्व्याप्ता न शेकुश्चलितुं रणे। कांश्चित्केशेषु जग्राह कांश्चित्कंठेष्वपीडयत्।
te sarve bāhubhirvyāptā na śekuścalituṁ raṇe kāṁścitkeśeṣu jagrāha kāṁścitkaṁṭheṣvapīḍayat
'all of them, held fast by his arms, could not move in that battle; some were seized by the hair, some throttled by the throat,'

चकर्त कस्यचिद्वक्त्रं मध्ये गृह्णात्तथापरम्। ते गदाचक्रनिर्दग्धा गतसत्वा गतासवः।
cakarta kasyacidvaktraṁ madhye gṛhṇāttathāparam te gadācakranirdagdhā gatasatvā gatāsavaḥ
'the face of one was torn off, another was seized by the middle; burned by mace and discus, they lost their strength and their very breath,'

गगनाद्भ्रष्टसर्वांगा निपेतुर्धरणीतले। तेषु सर्वेषु दैत्येषु हतेषु पुरुषोत्तमः।

'and, their every limb broken, fell from the sky to the surface of the earth. When all those Daityas had thus been slain, Purushottama,'

'having thus done what was pleasing to Shakra, that mace-bearer, his task accomplished -- when that clash in the Tarakamaya battle had thus concluded,'

तं च देशं जगामाशु ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः। सर्वैर्ब्रह्मर्षिभिः सार्द्धं गंधर्वाप्सरसांगणैः।
taṁ ca deśaṁ jagāmāśu brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ sarvairbrahmarṣibhiḥ sārddhaṁ gaṁdharvāpsarasāṁgaṇaiḥ
'Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds, came swiftly to that place, together with all the Brahmarshis and the hosts of Gandharvas and Apsarases.'

देवदेवं हरिं देवः पूजयन्वाक्यमब्रवीत्। कृतं देव महत्कर्म सुराणां शल्यमुद्धृतम्।
devadevaṁ hariṁ devaḥ pūjayanvākyamabravīt kṛtaṁ deva mahatkarma surāṇāṁ śalyamuddhṛtam
'That god, honoring Hari, the god of gods, spoke these words: "A great deed has been accomplished, O lord; the very thorn in the side of the gods has been drawn out."'

निधनेन च दैत्यानां वयं च परितोषिताः। योऽयं त्वया हतो विष्णो कालनेमिर्महासुरः।

'"By the destruction of the Daityas, we too are fully satisfied. This great asura Kalanemi, whom you have slain, O Vishnu --"'

'"--apart from you, there existed no one able to master him. He, overpowering the gods and the worlds together with all that moves and is still,"'

ॠषीणां कदनं कृत्वा मामपि प्रतिगर्जति। तदनेन त्वदीयेन परितुष्टोस्मि कर्मणा।

'"having wrought slaughter upon the sages, roared out defiance even against me. Therefore I am well satisfied by this deed of yours."'

यदयं कालकल्पस्ते कालनेमिर्निपातितः। तदागच्छस्व भद्रं ते गच्छाम दिवमुत्तमाम्।
yadayaṁ kālakalpaste kālanemirnipātitaḥ tadāgacchasva bhadraṁ te gacchāma divamuttamām
'"Since this Kalanemi, terrible as Time itself, has now been struck down by you -- come, may good befall you; let us go to the highest heaven."'

'"The Brahmarshis, stationed there, having gone to that assembly, await you. And what boon shall I grant you, O best of those who bestow boons?"'

स्वस्थानस्थेषु देवेषु तेषां च वरदो भवान्। निर्यातमेतत्त्रैलोक्यं स्फीतं निहतकंटकम्।

'"With the gods now established in their own stations, may you be their giver of boons. This whole three-world realm has been restored, prosperous, its thorn now uprooted --"'

अस्मिन्नेव मृधे विष्णो शक्राय सुमहात्मने। एवमुक्तो भगवता ब्रह्मणा हरिरव्ययः।

'"--restored, O Vishnu, in this very battle, to the great-souled Shakra." Thus addressed by the blessed Brahma, the imperishable Hari'

देवान्शक्रमुखान्सर्वानुवाच शुभया गिरा। विष्णुरुवाच। श्रूयतां त्रिदशास्सर्वे यावंतोऽत्र समागताः।
devānśakramukhānsarvānuvāca śubhayā girā viṣṇuruvāca śrūyatāṁ tridaśāssarve yāvaṁto'tra samāgatāḥ
'spoke to all the gods, with Shakra at their head, in a gracious voice. Vishnu said: "Hear me, all you gods, as many as have gathered here."'

सुपर्णसहितैस्तत्र पुरस्कृत्य पुरंदरं। अस्माभिः समरे सर्वैः कालनेमिमुखा हताः।
suparṇasahitaistatra puraskṛtya puraṁdaraṁ asmābhiḥ samare sarvaiḥ kālanemimukhā hatāḥ
'"There, together with Suparna, with Purandara placed at our head, by all of us together in that battle, Kalanemi and his followers have been slain."'

दानवा विक्रमोपेताः शक्रादपि महत्तराः। अस्मिन्महति संग्रामे द्वावेव तु विनिस्सृतौ।

'"Those Danavas, endowed with valor, even greater than Shakra -- from this great battle, only two have escaped."'

विरोचनस्तु दैतेयः स्वर्भानुश्च महाबलः। स्वां दिशं भजतां शक्रो दिशं वरुण एव च।

'"The Daitya Virochana, and the mighty Svarbhanu. Now let Shakra take up his own quarter, and Varuna likewise his own quarter,"'

याम्यां यमः पालयतामुत्तरां च धनाधिपः। ॠक्षैः सह सदा योगं गच्छतां चंद्रमास्तथा।
yāmyāṁ yamaḥ pālayatāmuttarāṁ ca dhanādhipaḥ ṝkṣaiḥ saha sadā yogaṁ gacchatāṁ caṁdramāstathā
'"let Yama guard the southern quarter, and the lord of wealth the northern; and let the Moon likewise ever proceed in union with the constellations."'

अयमृतुमुखं सूर्यो भजतामयनैः सह। आज्यभागाः प्रवर्तंतां सदस्यैरभिपूजिताः।
ayamṛtumukhaṁ sūryo bhajatāmayanaiḥ saha ājyabhāgāḥ pravartaṁtāṁ sadasyairabhipūjitāḥ
'"Let this Sun take up the head of the seasons, together with the solstices; let the shares of ghee-offerings proceed once more, honored by the members of the sacrificial assembly."'

हूयंतामग्नयो विप्रैर्वेददृष्टेन कर्मणा। देवाश्च बलिहोमेन स्वाध्यायेन महर्षयः।
hūyaṁtāmagnayo viprairvedadṛṣṭena karmaṇā devāśca balihomena svādhyāyena maharṣayaḥ
'"Let the sacred fires be offered by the Brahmins, according to the rite seen in the Veda; let the gods be honored by offerings and oblations, and the great sages by their own recitation of the Veda;"'

श्राद्धेन पितरश्चैव तुष्टिं यांतु यथासुखम्। वायुश्चरतु मार्गस्थस्त्रिधा दीप्यतु पावकः।
śrāddhena pitaraścaiva tuṣṭiṁ yāṁtu yathāsukham vāyuścaratu mārgasthastridhā dīpyatu pāvakaḥ
'"and let the ancestors, through the shraddha rite, attain contentment at their ease. Let the Wind move again in its proper course, and let the sacred fire blaze in its threefold form."'

त्रयोवर्णाश्च लोकांस्त्रीस्तपर्पयंत्वात्मजैर्गुणैः। क्रतवः संप्रवर्तंतां दीक्षणीयैर्द्विजातिभिः।
trayovarṇāśca lokāṁstrīstaparpayaṁtvātmajairguṇaiḥ kratavaḥ saṁpravartaṁtāṁ dīkṣaṇīyairdvijātibhiḥ
'"Let the three higher classes satisfy the three worlds with their own proper virtues; let the sacrificial rites be duly carried forward by the twice-born, worthy of initiation;"'

दक्षिणाश्चोपपद्यंतां याज्ञिकैश्च पृथक्पृथक्। गाश्च सूर्यो रसान्सोमो वायुः प्राणांश्च प्राणिषु।
dakṣiṇāścopapadyaṁtāṁ yājñikaiśca pṛthakpṛthak gāśca sūryo rasānsomo vāyuḥ prāṇāṁśca prāṇiṣu
'"let the sacrificial fees be duly given, each by its own performer of the rite; let the Sun nourish the cattle, the Moon the essences, and the Wind the very breath within all living beings,"'

तर्पयन्तः प्रवर्तंतामेते सोम्यैः स्वकर्मभिः। यथावदनुपूर्वेण महेंद्रमलयोद्भवाः।
tarpayantaḥ pravartaṁtāmete somyaiḥ svakarmabhiḥ yathāvadanupūrveṇa maheṁdramalayodbhavāḥ
'"these, nourishing all, let them proceed by their own gentle functions, each in due and proper order -- and those born of Mahendra and Malaya,"'
Verse 315 (padma.1.41.315)
त्रैलोक्यमातरः सर्वाः समुद्रं यांतु सिंधवः। दैत्येभ्यस्त्यज्यतां भीश्च शांतिं व्रजत देवताः।
trailokyamātaraḥ sarvāḥ samudraṁ yāṁtu siṁdhavaḥ daityebhyastyajyatāṁ bhīśca śāṁtiṁ vrajata devatāḥ
'"let all the rivers, mothers of the three worlds, flow again to the sea. Let fear of the Daityas now be set aside; go in peace, O gods."'
Verse 316 (padma.1.41.316)
स्वस्ति वोऽस्तु गमिष्यामि ब्रह्मलोकं सनातनं। स्वगृहे स्वर्गलोके वा संग्रामे वा विशेषतः।
svasti vo'stu gamiṣyāmi brahmalokaṁ sanātanaṁ svagṛhe svargaloke vā saṁgrāme vā viśeṣataḥ
'"May it be well with you; I shall now go to the eternal world of Brahma. Whether in your own homes, or in the heavenly world, or above all in battle --"'
Verse 317 (padma.1.41.317)
विश्वस्तैश्च न गंतव्यं नित्यं क्षुद्रा हि दानवाः। छिद्रेषु प्रहरंत्येते न तेषां संस्थितिर्ध्रुवा।
viśvastaiśca na gaṁtavyaṁ nityaṁ kṣudrā hi dānavāḥ chidreṣu praharaṁtyete na teṣāṁ saṁsthitirdhruvā
'"--you must never proceed carelessly, trusting too much; for the Danavas are ever treacherous. They strike at the very weak points, and their good conduct is never to be relied upon."'
Verse 318 (padma.1.41.318)
सौम्यानां निजभावानां भवतामार्जवे मनः। एवमुक्त्वा सुरगणान्विष्णुस्सत्यपराक्रमः।
saumyānāṁ nijabhāvānāṁ bhavatāmārjave manaḥ evamuktvā suragaṇānviṣṇussatyaparākramaḥ
'"Let your minds, gentle by your own nature, remain fixed in honest uprightness." Having thus spoken to the hosts of gods, Vishnu, of true valor,'
Verse 319 (padma.1.41.319)
जगाम ब्रह्मणा सार्द्धं ब्रह्मलोकं महायशाः। देवानां महतीं प्रीतिमुत्पाद्य भगवान्प्रभुः।
jagāma brahmaṇā sārddhaṁ brahmalokaṁ mahāyaśāḥ devānāṁ mahatīṁ prītimutpādya bhagavānprabhuḥ
'went, together with Brahma, of great renown, to the world of Brahma -- that blessed and mighty Lord, having brought about great joy among the gods.'
Verse 320 (padma.1.41.320)
एतदाश्चर्यमभवत्संग्रामे तारकामये। दानवानां च विष्णोश्च यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि।
etadāścaryamabhavatsaṁgrāme tārakāmaye dānavānāṁ ca viṣṇośca yanmāṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi
'This is the wondrous event that took place in the Tarakamaya battle, between the Danavas and Vishnu, concerning which you have questioned me.'
