Chapter 41All chaptersChapter 43

Verse 1 (padma.1.42.1)

bhīṣma uvāca śrutaḥ padmodbhavo brahmanvistareṇa tvayeritaḥ samāsādbhavamāhātmyamutpattiṁ ca guhasya ca

Bhishma said: O Brahmin, I have heard from you the Padma [Purana] narrated at length. Now tell me in brief the greatness of Bhava (Shiva) and the birth of Guha (Kartikeya).

Verse 2 (padma.1.42.2)

śrotumicchāmi te brahmanyathābhūtaḥ kṛtaṁ ca yat tārakaśca kathaṁ bhūto dānavo balavattaraḥ

I wish to hear from you, O Brahmin, how it truly happened, and how the mighty demon Taraka came to be.

Verse 3 (padma.1.42.3)

kārttikeyena sa brahmankathaṁ dhvasto mahāsuraḥ kathaṁ rudreṇa munayaḥ preṣitā maṁdaraṁ girim

How was that great demon destroyed by Kartikeya, O Brahmin? And how did Rudra send the sages to Mount Mandara?

Verse 4 (padma.1.42.4)

kathaṁ labdhā umā tatra rudreṇa parameṣṭhinā etadākhyāhi me sarvaṁ yathābhūtaṁ mahāmune

How did the supreme lord Rudra obtain Uma there? Tell me all this exactly as it happened, O great sage.

Verse 5 (padma.1.42.5)

pulastya uvāca kaśyapena purā proktā ditirdaityāraṇiḥ śubhā vajrasāramayaiścāṁgaiḥ putro devi bhaviṣyati

Pulastya said: Long ago Kashyapa said to the auspicious Diti, mother of the daityas: 'O goddess, you shall have a son with limbs of adamantine strength.'

Verse 6 (padma.1.42.6)

vajrāṁgo nāma putrastu bhavitā dharmavatsalaḥ sā ca labdhavarā devī suṣuve vajraduśchidam

'That son, devoted to dharma, shall be named Vajranga.' Having received the boon, the goddess bore a son whom even the thunderbolt could not pierce.

Verse 7 (padma.1.42.7)

sa jātamātra evābhūtsarvaśāstrārthapāragaḥ uvāca mātaraṁ bhaktyā mātaḥ kiṁ karavāṇyaham

As soon as he was born he was already master of the meaning of all the scriptures. With devotion he said to his mother: 'Mother, what shall I do?'

Verse 8 (padma.1.42.8)

tasyovāca tato hṛṣṭā ditirdaityādhipasya tu bahavo me hatāḥ putrāḥ sahasrākṣeṇa putraka

Then Diti, delighted, said to that son of the daitya lord: 'My son, many of my sons have been slain by the thousand-eyed Indra.'

Verse 9 (padma.1.42.9)

teṣāmapacitiṁ kartuṁ gaccha śakravadhāya tu bāḍhamityeva tāṁ coktvā jagāma tridivaṁ balāt

'Go and avenge them by slaying Shakra.' Saying only 'so be it,' he went by force to the triple heaven.

Verse 10 (padma.1.42.10)

badhvā tataḥ sahasrākṣaṁ pāśenāmoghavarcasā māturaṁtikamāgacchadvyādhaḥ kṣudramṛgaṁ yathā

Binding the thousand-eyed Indra with an unfailing noose, he brought him before his mother, as a hunter brings a small captured animal.

Verse 11 (padma.1.42.11)

etasminnaṁtare brahmā kaśyapaśca mahātapāḥ āgatau tatra yatrāstāṁ mātāputrāvabhītakau

Meanwhile Brahma and the great ascetic Kashyapa arrived where the fearless mother and son were.

Verse 12 (padma.1.42.12)

dṛṣṭvā tu tāvuvācedaṁ brahmā kaśyapa eva ca muṁcainaṁ putra deveṁdraṁ kimanena prayojanam

Seeing them, Brahma and Kashyapa said: 'Release Indra, my son. What purpose is served by this?'

Verse 13 (padma.1.42.13)

avamāno vadhaḥ proktaḥ putra saṁbhāvitasya tu asmadvākyena yo muktastvaddhastānmṛta eva saḥ

'For one held in honor, humiliation is as good as death, my son. Whoever is released at our word is, in effect, already dead by your hand.'

Verse 14 (padma.1.42.14)

parasya gauravānmuktaḥ śatrūṇāṁ śatrurāhave sajīvanneva hi mṛto divase divase punaḥ

'An enemy released from battle only out of respect for another lives on, yet dies again, as it were, every single day.'

Verse 15 (padma.1.42.15)

etacchrutvā tu vajrāṁgaḥ praṇato vākyamabravīt na me kṛtyamanenāsti māturājñā kṛtā hi me

Hearing this, Vajranga bowed and said: 'I have no personal business with him — I have only carried out my mother's command.'

Verse 16 (padma.1.42.16)

tvaṁ surāsuranātho vai mānyaśca prapitāmahaḥ kariṣye tvadvaco deva eṣa muktaḥ śatakratuḥ

'You are the honored lord of both gods and demons, my great-grandfather. I shall obey your word, O lord — here, Indra of the hundred sacrifices is released.'

Verse 17 (padma.1.42.17)

tapasemeratirdevanirvighnaṁtaccamebhavet tvatprasādena bhagavannityuktvā virarāma ha

'By your grace may my delight be in austerity, unhindered, O Lord' — saying this, he fell silent.

Verse 18 (padma.1.42.18)

tasmiṁstūṣṇīṁ sthite daitye provācedaṁ pitāmahaḥ brahmovāca tapastvaṁ kuru māpannaḥ sosmacchāsanasaṁsthitaḥ

When the daitya had thus fallen silent, the grandsire spoke. Brahma said: 'Practice austerity, and remain free from calamity, standing firm in obedience to us.'

Verse 19 (padma.1.42.19)

anayā cittaśuddhyā hi paryāptaṁ janmanaḥ phalam ityuktvā padmajaḥ kanyāṁ sasarjāyatalocanām

'By this very purity of mind, the fruit of your birth is fulfilled.' Saying this, the lotus-born Brahma created a large-eyed maiden.

Verse 20 (padma.1.42.20)

tāmasmai pradadau devaḥ patnyarthe padmasaṁbhavaḥ varāṁgīti ca nāmāsyāḥ kṛtvā yātaḥ pitāpahaḥ

The lotus-born god gave her to him as his wife, naming her Varangi, and then that grandsire departed.

Verse 21 (padma.1.42.21)

vajrāṁgopi tayā sārddhaṁ jagāma tapase vanam ūrddhvabāhussa daityeṁdro caradvarṣasahasrakam

Vajranga too went with her into the forest for austerity. That lord of the daityas practiced with upraised arms for a thousand years.

Verse 22 (padma.1.42.22)

kālaṁ kamalapatrākṣaḥ śuddhabuddhirmahātapāḥ tāvaccādhomukhaḥ kālaṁ tāvatpaṁcāgnimadhyagaḥ

The lotus-eyed one, of pure intellect and great austerity, spent that long again with his head bowed down, and that long again amid five fires.

Verse 23 (padma.1.42.23)

nirāhāro ghoratapāstaporāśirajāyata tataḥ soṁtarjale cakre vāsaṁ varṣasahasrakam

Fasting and performing terrible austerities, he became a mass of tapas itself. Then he dwelt within the water for a thousand years.

Verse 24 (padma.1.42.24)

jalāṁtaraṁ praviṣṭasya tasya patnī mahāvratā tasyaiva tīre sarasaḥ sthitā'sau maunamāśritā

While he had entered the water, his wife, devoted to great vows, remained on the very bank of that lake, keeping silence.

Verse 25 (padma.1.42.25)

nirāhāraṁ tapo ghoraṁ praviveśa mahādyutiḥ tasyāṁ tapasi vartaṁtyāmiṁdraścakre vibhīṣikām

That radiant lady too entered upon fierce, foodless austerity. While she was absorbed in it, Indra tried to frighten her.

Verse 26 (padma.1.42.26)

gatvā tu markaṭākārastadāśramapadaṁ mahat brasīṁ cakarṣa balavāngaṁdhādyarcākaraṁḍakam

Taking the form of a monkey and going to that great hermitage, the mighty Indra dragged about her grass-seat and the basket of incense and offerings.

Verse 27 (padma.1.42.27)

tatastu siṁharūpeṇa bhīṣayāmāsa bhāminīm tato bhujaṁgarūpeṇāpyadaśaccaraṇadvayam

Then, taking the form of a lion, he terrified the lady. Then, taking the form of a serpent, he bit her two feet.

Verse 28 (padma.1.42.28)

tapobalavaśātsā tu navadhyatvaṁ jagāma ha bhīṣikābhiranekābhiḥ kleśayanpākaśāsanaḥ

But by the power of her austerity she remained unharmed, even while Indra tormented her with these many terrifying forms.

Verse 29 (padma.1.42.29)

virarāma yadā naiva vajrāṁgamahiṣī tadā śailasyaduṣṭatāṁ matvā śāpaṁ dātuṁ samudyatā

When Vajranga's queen would not desist even so, she resolved to curse the mountain, thinking it to be at fault.

Verse 30 (padma.1.42.30)

tāṁ śāpābhimukhīṁ dṛṣṭvā śailaḥ puruṣavigrahaḥ uvāca tāṁ varārohāṁ varāṁgīṁ bhītalocanaḥ

Seeing her ready to curse, the mountain, taking human form, spoke with frightened eyes to the beautiful Varangi.

Verse 31 (padma.1.42.31)

śaila uvāca nāhaṁ mahāvrate duṣṭaḥ sevyohaṁ sarvadehinām vipriyaṁ te karotyeṣa ruṣitaḥ pākaśāsanaḥ

The mountain said: 'O lady of great vows, I am not at fault — I exist to be resorted to by all beings. It is enraged Indra who is doing you this wrong.'

Verse 32 (padma.1.42.32)

etasminnaṁtare jātaḥ kālo varṣasahasrakaḥ tasminjñātvā tu bhagavānkāle kamalasaṁbhavaḥ

Meanwhile a thousand years had passed. Knowing that this time had come, the lotus-born lord—

Verse 33 (padma.1.42.33)

tuṣṭaḥ provāca vajrāṁgaṁ tadāgatya jalāśayam brahmovāca dadāmi sarvakāmaṁ ta uttiṣṭha ditinaṁdana

—being pleased, came to that lake and said to Vajranga. Brahma said: 'I grant you every desire; arise, son of Diti.'

Verse 34 (padma.1.42.34)

evamuktastadotthāya sa daityeṁdrastaponidhiḥ uvāca prāṁjalirvākyaṁ sarvalokapitāmaham

Thus addressed, that lord of the daityas, a treasury of austerity, rose up and spoke, hands folded, to the grandsire of all worlds.

Verse 35 (padma.1.42.35)

vajrāṁga uvāca āsuro māstu me bhāvaḥ saṁtu lokā mamākṣayāḥ tapasyabhiratirme'stu śarīrasyāsya vartanam

Vajranga said: 'Let there be no demonic nature in me; let imperishable worlds be mine; let my delight be in austerity, and let this body of mine be sustained.'

Verse 36 (padma.1.42.36)

evamastviti taṁ devo jagāma svakamālayam vajrāṁgopi samāpte tu tapasi sthirasaṁyamaḥ

Saying 'so be it,' the god departed to his own abode. And Vajranga, his austerity now complete, remaining firm in self-control—

Verse 37 (padma.1.42.37)

—wishing to rejoin his wife, went to his hermitage but did not find her there. Overcome with hunger, he entered the mountain's dense thickets.

Verse 38 (padma.1.42.38)

ādātuṁ phalamūlāni sa ca tasminvyalokayat rudantīṁ svāṁ priyāṁ dīnāṁ tarupracchāditānanām

Going to gather fruits and roots, there he saw his beloved wife, weeping and wretched, her face hidden behind a tree.

Verse 39 (padma.1.42.39)

tāṁ vilokya tato daityaḥ provāca parisāṁtvayan vajrāṁga uvāca kena te'pakṛtaṁ bhadre yamalokaṁ yiyāsunā

Seeing her, the daitya spoke, comforting her. Vajranga said: 'Who has wronged you, good lady, that he should be so eager to go to the abode of Death?'

Verse 40 (padma.1.42.40)

kaṁ vā kāmaṁ prayacchāmi śīghraṁ prabrūhi mānini varāṁgyuvāca trāsitāsmyapaviddhāsmi tāḍitā pīḍitāsmi ca

'Or what wish shall I grant you? Tell me quickly, proud lady.' Varangi said: 'I have been terrified, cast about, struck, and tormented.'

Verse 41 (padma.1.42.41)

raudreṇa devarājena naṣṭanātheva bhūriśaḥ duḥkhasyāṁtamapaśyaṁtī prāṇāṁstyaktuṁ vyavasthitā

'Repeatedly, as if I had no protector, by the fierce king of the gods. Seeing no end to my suffering, I had resolved to give up my life.'

Verse 42 (padma.1.42.42)

putraṁ me tārakaṁ dehi tasmādduḥkhamahārṇavāt evamuktastu daityeṁdraḥ kopavyākulalocanaḥ

'Give me a deliverer son, a Taraka, to carry me across this ocean of sorrow.' Thus addressed, the lord of the daityas, his eyes wild with rage—

Verse 43 (padma.1.42.43)

śaktopi devarājasya pratikartuṁ mahāsuraḥ tapa eva punaścartuṁ vyavasyata mahābalaḥ

—though capable of retaliating against the king of the gods, that mighty demon resolved instead to perform austerity once again.

Verse 44 (padma.1.42.44)

jñātvā tasya tu saṁkalpaṁ brahmā krūrataraṁ punaḥ ājagāma tvarāyukto yatrāsau ditinaṁdanaḥ

Knowing his resolve to be even harsher than before, Brahma came quickly to where that son of Diti was.

Verse 45 (padma.1.42.45)

brahmovāca kimarthaṁ putra bhūyastvaṁ kartuṁ niyamamudyataḥ tadahaṁ te punardadmi kāṁkṣitaṁ putramojasā

Brahma said: 'Why, my son, are you again resolved to undertake austere vows? I shall grant you, by my own power, the son you desire.'

Verse 46 (padma.1.42.46)

vajrāṁga uvāca utthitena mayā dṛṣṭā samādhānāttvadājñayā trāsiteṁdreṇa māmāha sā varāṁgī sutārthinī

Vajranga said: 'Rising from meditation at your command, I saw Varangi, terrified by Indra, longing for a son, and she said to me—'

Verse 47 (padma.1.42.47)

putraṁ me tārakaṁ dehi tuṣṭo me tvaṁ pitāmaha brahmovāca alaṁ te tapasā vīra mā kleśe dustare viśa

—"Give me a deliverer son; you, grandsire, are pleased with me." Brahma said: 'Enough of austerity, hero; do not enter into unbearable hardship.'

Verse 48 (padma.1.42.48)

putrastu tārako nāma bhaviṣyati mahābalaḥ devasīmaṁtinīnāṁ tu dhammillaka vimokṣakaḥ

'Your son shall be named Taraka, of great strength — one who shall loosen the braided hair of the wives of the gods, that is, widow them in war.'

Verse 49 (padma.1.42.49)

ityukto daityanāthastu praṇamya prapitāmaham gatvā tāṁ naṁdayāmāsa mahiṣīṁ karśitāṁtarām

Thus addressed, the lord of the daityas bowed to the great-grandsire, and going to his queen, whose heart was worn with grief, brought her joy.

Verse 50 (padma.1.42.50)

tau daṁpatī kṛtārthau tu jagmatuḥ svāśramaṁ tadā āhitaṁ tu tadā garbhaṁ varāṁgī varavarṇinī

That couple, their purpose fulfilled, went to their own hermitage. Then the fair Varangi conceived a child.

Verse 51 (padma.1.42.51)

pūrṇaṁ varṣasahasraṁ tu dadhārodara eva hi tato varṣasahasrāṁte varāṁgī sā prasūyata

She bore it in her womb for a full thousand years. Then, at the end of that thousand years, Varangi gave birth.

Verse 52 (padma.1.42.52)

jāyamāne tu daitye tu tasminlokabhayaṁkare cacāla sarvā pṛthivī prodbhūtāśca mahārṇavāḥ

As that demon, terrifying to all the worlds, was being born, the whole earth trembled and the great oceans surged up.

Verse 53 (padma.1.42.53)

celurdharādharāścāpi vavurvātāśca bhīṣaṇāḥ jepurjapyaṁ munivarā nedurvyālamṛgā api

The mountains too shook, dreadful winds blew, the foremost sages recited their prayers, and even the wild beasts roared.

Verse 54 (padma.1.42.54)

jahau kāṁtiścaṁdrasūryau nīhāracchāditā diśaḥ jāte mahāsure tasminsarve cāpi mahāsurāḥ

The sun and moon lost their brightness, and the directions were veiled in mist. When that great demon was born, all the great asuras—

Verse 55 (padma.1.42.55)

ājagmurharṣitāstatra tathā cāsurayoṣitaḥ jagurharṣasamāviṣṭā nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ

—came there rejoicing, as did the wives of the asuras. Filled with joy they sang, and troupes of apsarases danced.

Verse 56 (padma.1.42.56)

tato mahotsave jāte dānavānāṁ mahādyute viṣaṇṇamanaso devāḥ saheṁdrā abhavaṁstadā

Then, as that great and radiant festival of the danavas took place, the gods, together with Indra, grew dejected at heart.

Verse 57 (padma.1.42.57)

varāṁgī tu sutaṁ dṛṣṭvā harṣeṇāpūritā tadā bahumene ca daityeṁdro vijātaṁ taṁ tadā tayā

Varangi, seeing her son, was filled with joy, and the lord of the daityas held in high esteem the child she had borne.

Verse 58 (padma.1.42.58)

jātamātrastu daityeṁdrastārakaścogravikramaḥ abhiṣikto surairmukhyaiḥ kujaṁbhamahiṣādibhiḥ

As soon as he was born, that fierce and mighty lord of the daityas, Taraka, was anointed as king by the foremost demons, Kujambha, Mahisha, and others.

Verse 59 (padma.1.42.59)

sarvāsuramahārājye pṛthivītulanakṣame sa tu prāptamahārājyastārako nṛpasattama

Over the whole great kingdom of the asuras, vast as the earth itself, Taraka thus obtained his kingship, becoming the foremost of kings.

Verse 60 (padma.1.42.60)

uvāca dānavaśreṣṭho yuktiyuktamidaṁ vacaḥ tāraka uvāca śṛṇudhvamasurāḥ sarve vākyaṁ mama mahābalāḥ

That best of danavas spoke these reasoned words. Taraka said: 'Listen, all you mighty asuras, to my words.'

Verse 61 (padma.1.42.61)

vaṁśakṣayakarā devāḥ sarveṣāmeva dānavāḥ asmākaṁ jātidharmeṇa virūḍhaṁ vairamakṣayam

'The gods are the destroyers of the lineage of all danavas; by the very nature of our birth, an unending enmity has grown between us.'

Verse 62 (padma.1.42.62)

tacchrutvā saṁmataṁ kṛtvā pāriyātraṁ yayau giriṁ nirāhāraḥ paṁcatapāḥ patrabhugvāribhojanaḥ

Hearing this and gaining their assent, he went to Mount Pariyatra, and fasting, performing the five-fires austerity, lived first on leaves, then on water alone.

Verse 64 (padma.1.42.64)

śataṁśataṁ samānāṁ tu tapāṁsyetānyathākarot evaṁ tu karśite dehe taporāśitvamāgate

He performed each of these austerities for a hundred years at a time. As his body thus grew emaciated and became a mass of tapas—

Verse 65 (padma.1.42.65)

tataḥ saṁciṁtya daityeṁdraḥ śiśorvai saptavāsarāt vavre mahāsuro mṛtyuṁ mohito hyavalepataḥ

Then, reflecting, that lord of the daityas, that great demon, deluded by his own pride, chose death only at the hands of a child seven days old.

Verse 68 (padma.1.42.68)

jagāmomityudāhṛtya brahmā daityo nijaṁ gṛham athāha maṁtriṇastūrṇaṁ balaṁ me saṁprayujyatām

Saying 'Om, so be it,' Brahma departed, and the demon returned home. Then he said to his ministers: 'Let my army be mustered at once.'

—[Indra] stood upon the elephant Airavata — great-souled, clad in wondrous ornaments and garments, bearing his mighty thunderbolt, adorned with a fine canopy, his armlets glinting like coiled serpents—

Verse 103 (padma.1.42.103)

Verse 104 (padma.1.42.104)

babhūva sā durjayapattisaṁtatā vibhāti nānāyudhayodhadustarā tatośvinau ca marutaḥ sasādhyāḥ sapuraṁdarāḥ

—that unconquerable line of infantry shone forth, impassable with warriors bearing every kind of weapon. Then the two Ashvins, the Maruts, the Sadhyas, together with Indra—

Verse 105 (padma.1.42.105)

Verse 106 (padma.1.42.106)

na caivāstrāṇyasajjaṁta gātre vajrācalopame atho rathādavaplutya tārako dānavādhipaḥ

Yet their weapons found no purchase on his body, hard as a mountain of adamant. Then Taraka, lord of the danavas, leapt down from his chariot—

Verse 107 (padma.1.42.107)

jaghāna koṭiśo devānkarapārṣṇibhireva ca hataśeṣāṇi sainyāni devānāṁ vipra dudruvuḥ

Verse 108 (padma.1.42.108)

'Do not kill the gods, O daityas — bind them and bring them quickly to Vajranga's palace, so that he may see these gods bound with his own eyes.'

Verse 110 (padma.1.42.110)

lokapālāṁstato daityo baddhvā ceṁdramukhānraṇe sarudrānsudṛḍhaiḥ pāśaiḥ paśupālaḥ paśūniva

Then the daitya, on that battlefield, bound the guardians of the world headed by Indra, together with the Rudras, in strong fetters — as a herdsman binds his cattle.

Verse 111 (padma.1.42.111)

sa bhūyo rathamāsthāya jagāma svakamālayaṁ siddhagaṁdharvasaṁghuṣṭaṁ vipulācalamastakam stūyamāno ditisutairapsarobhiḥ susevitaḥ

He then mounted his chariot once more and returned to his own abode atop the vast mountain-peak, resounding with the songs of Siddhas and Gandharvas, praised by the sons of Diti, and attended by hosts of apsarases.
