Srishti Khanda · Chapter 4
The Birth of Lakshmi
Verse 1 (padma.1.4.1)
bhīṣma uvāca kṣīrābdhau tu tathā lakṣmīḥ kilotpannā mayā śrutā khyātyāṁ bhṛgoḥ samutpannā etadāha kathaṁ bhavān
Bhishma said: I have heard that Lakshmi was born from the Ocean of Milk, and also that she arose from Khyati, Bhrigu's wife. Tell me, how is this?
Verse 2 (padma.1.4.2)
kathaṁ ca dakṣaduhitā dehaṁ tyaktavatī śubhā menāyāṁ garbhasaṁbhūtimumāyā janma eva ca
And how did Daksha's auspicious daughter give up her body, and how was Uma born, conceived in Mena's womb?
Verse 3 (padma.1.4.3)
kimarthaṁ devadevena patnī haimavatī kṛtā virodhaṁ cātha dakṣeṇa bhagavāṁstu bravītu me
Why did the God of gods make the daughter of Himavat his wife? And please tell me of his conflict with Daksha, O Lord.
Verse 4 (padma.1.4.4)
pulastya uvāca idaṁ ca śṛṇu bhūpāla yatpṛṣṭohamiha tvayā śrīsaṁbaṁdho mayāpyeṣa śruta āsītpitāmahāt
Pulastya said: Hear this, O king, which you have asked me. This account of Shri's connection I too heard from the Grandsire Brahma.
Verse 5 (padma.1.4.5)
atriputrastu durvāsāḥ paribhrāmyanmahīmimām vidyādharīkaremālāṁ dṛṣṭvā saugandhikīṁ śubhām
Durvasas, son of Atri, wandering over this earth, saw in the hand of a Vidyadhari maiden a beautiful, fragrant garland.
Verse 6 (padma.1.4.6)
yācayāmāsa me dehi jaṭājūṭe karomyaham iti vidyādharī tena pṛṣṭā sā ṛṣiṇā tathā
he begged of her: "Give it to me, I shall wear it in my matted locks." Thus the sage made his request of the Vidyadhari.
Verse 7 (padma.1.4.7)
dadau tasmai mudāyuktā tāṁ mālāṁ sa tadā nṛpa gṛhītvā suciraṁ kālaṁ śiromālāṁ babaṁdha ha
O king, she joyfully gave him that garland; and he, taking it, bound it upon his head as a crown for a long while.
Verse 8 (padma.1.4.8)
unmatta pretavadvipraḥ śobhamānobravīdidam iyaṁ vidyādharī kanyā pīnonnata payodharā
That brahmin, behaving like a madman or a ghost yet still radiant, said: "This Vidyadhari maiden, with her full, high breasts—
Verse 9 (padma.1.4.9)
śobhālaṁkārasaubhāgyairyuktā dṛṣṭā tato manaḥ kṣobhamāyāti me cādya nāhaṁ kāme vicakṣaṇaḥ
endowed with beauty, ornament and good fortune — having seen her, my mind today is agitated; I am no expert in matters of desire."
Verse 10 (padma.1.4.10)
vrajāmi tāvadanyatra saubhāgyaṁ svaṁ pradarśayan evamuktvā sa rājeṁdra paribabhrāma medinīm
"I shall go elsewhere, displaying my own good fortune." Having said this, O lord of kings, he wandered over the earth.
Verse 11 (padma.1.4.11)
airāvataṁ samārūḍhaṁ rājānaṁ tridivaukasām trailokyādhipatiṁ śakraṁ bhrājamānaṁ śacīpatim
There he saw Shakra, king of the dwellers of heaven, mounted on Airavata, lord of the three worlds, shining, husband of Shachi.
Verse 12 (padma.1.4.12)
tāmātmaśiraso mālāṁ bhramadunmattaṣaṭpadām ādāyāmararājāya cikṣeponmattavanmuniḥ
That garland from his own head, swarming with intoxicated bees, the sage — as if mad — took and threw upon the king of the immortals.
Verse 13 (padma.1.4.13)
gṛhītvā devarājena mālā sā gajamūrddhani muktā rarāja sā mālā kailāse jāhnavī yathā
Taken by the king of gods, that garland, placed upon the elephant's head, shone there as the Ganga shines upon Kailasa.
Verse 14 (padma.1.4.14)
madāṁdhakāritākṣosau gaṁdhāghrāṇena vāraṇaḥ kareṇādāya cikṣepa tāṁ mālāṁ pṛthivītale
That elephant, its eyes blinded by rut, on smelling its fragrance, took the garland with its trunk and threw it down upon the ground.
Verse 15 (padma.1.4.15)
tataścukrodha bhagavāndurvāsā munipuṁgavaḥ rājeṁdradevarājānaṁ kruddhaścedamuvāca ha
Then the illustrious Durvasas, foremost of sages, grew furious, and enraged, spoke thus to the king of gods:
Verse 16 (padma.1.4.16)
aiśvaryamadaduṣṭātmannatistabdhosi vāsava śriyodhāmasrajaṁ yasmānmaddattānnābhinaṁdasi
"O evil-souled one, arrogant from the pride of your sovereignty, O Vasava — since you do not honor this garland, abode of Shri, given by me—
Verse 17 (padma.1.4.17)
trailokyaśrīrato mūḍha vināśamupayāsyati maddattā bhavatā mālā kṣiptā yasmānmahītale
therefore, O fool, the glory of the three worlds shall now go to ruin, since the garland I gave was thrown by you upon the earth."
Verse 18 (padma.1.4.18)
tasmātpraṇaṣṭalakṣmīkaṁ trailokyaṁ te bhaviṣyati yasya saṁjātakopasya bhayameti carācaram
"Therefore the three worlds shall become bereft of Lakshmi for you" — spoken by him whose wrath, once aroused, all moving and unmoving beings fear.
Verse 19 (padma.1.4.19)
taṁ māṁ tvamatigarveṇa devarājāvamanyase maheṁdro vāraṇaskaṁdhādavatīrya tvarānvitaḥ
"Even me, O king of gods, you disdain out of excessive pride!" Hearing this, Mahendra, hastily descending from the shoulder of his elephant,
Verse 20 (padma.1.4.20)
prasādayāmāsa muniṁ durvāsasamakalmaṣam prasādyamānaḥ sa tadā praṇipātapuraḥsaram
sought to appease the sinless sage Durvasas. But even as he was being placated with full prostration—
Verse 21 (padma.1.4.21)
nāhaṁ kṣamiṣye bahunā kimuktena śatakrato ityuktvā prayayau vipro devarājopi taṁ punaḥ
"I shall not forgive you — why say more, O Shatakratu?" Having said this, the brahmin departed; and the king of gods too, once more,
Verse 22 (padma.1.4.22)
āruhyairāvataṁ nāgaṁ prayayāvamarāvatīm tataḥ prabhṛti niḥśrīkaṁ saśakraṁ bhuvanatrayam
mounted Airavata and went to Amaravati. From then on, the three worlds together with Indra became bereft of Shri.
Verse 23 (padma.1.4.23)
na yajñāḥ saṁpravartaṁte na tapasyaṁti tāpasāḥ na ca dānāni dīyaṁte naṣṭaprāyamabhūjjagat
No sacrifices were performed, ascetics did not practice austerity, no gifts were given — the world became as if ruined.
Verse 24 (padma.1.4.24)
evamatyaṁtaniḥśrīke trailokye sattvavarjite devānpratibalodyogaṁ cakrurdaiteyadānavāḥ
Thus, when the three worlds became utterly bereft of glory and vigor, the Daityas and Danavas rose up in strength against the gods.
Verse 25 (padma.1.4.25)
vijitāstridaśā daityairiṁdrādyāḥ śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ pitāmahaṁ mahābhāgaṁ hutāśanapurogamāḥ
Defeated by the Daityas, the gods headed by Indra, with Agni leading the way, went for refuge to the most fortunate Grandsire Brahma.
Verse 26 (padma.1.4.26)
yathāvatkathite devairbrahmā prāha tathā surān kṣīrodasyottaraṁ kūlaṁ jagāma sahitaḥ suraiḥ
When the gods had duly told him everything, Brahma spoke thus to them, and went, together with the gods, to the northern shore of the Ocean of Milk.
Verse 27 (padma.1.4.27)
gatvā jagāda bhagavānvāsudevaṁ pitāmahaḥ uttiṣṭha viṣṇo śīghraṁ tvaṁ devatānāṁ hitaṁ kuru
Having gone there, the illustrious Grandsire said to Vasudeva: "Arise, O Vishnu, quickly, and do what is good for the gods.
Verse 28 (padma.1.4.28)
tvayā vinā dānavaistu jitāḥ sarve punaḥpunaḥ ityuktaḥ puṁḍarīkākṣaḥ puruṣaḥ puruṣottamaḥ
Without you, they have been defeated again and again by the Danavas." Thus addressed, the lotus-eyed Purusha, the best of beings,
Verse 29 (padma.1.4.29)
apūrvarūpasaṁsthānāndṛṣṭvā devānuvāca ha tejaso bhavatāṁ devāḥ kariṣyāmyupabṛṁhaṇam
seeing the gods reduced to an unprecedented state, said: "O gods, I shall bring about the increase of your vigor.
Verse 30 (padma.1.4.30)
vadāmyahaṁ yatkriyatāṁ bhavadbhistadidaṁ surāḥ ānīya sahitā daityaiḥ kṣīrābdhau sakalauṣadhīḥ
I shall tell you what is to be done: together with the Daityas, bring all herbs into the Ocean of Milk.
Verse 31 (padma.1.4.31)
maṁthānaṁ maṁdaraṁ kṛtvā netraṁ kṛtvā ca vāsukim mathyatāmamṛtaṁ devāḥ sahāye mayyavasthite
Making Mandara the churning-rod and Vasuki the cord, let the nectar be churned, O gods, while I remain to help.
Verse 32 (padma.1.4.32)
sāmapūrvaṁ ca daiteyāṁstatra sambhāṣya karmaṇi samānaphalabhoktāro yūṁya cātra bhaviṣyatha
First, with conciliatory words, engage the Daityas in this task, telling them: 'you too shall be equal partakers of the fruit here.'
Verse 33 (padma.1.4.33)
mathyamāne ca tatrābdhau yatsamutpadyate'mṛtam tatpānādbalino yūyamamarāḥ saṁbhaviṣyatha
And when that ocean is churned, whatever nectar arises — by drinking it you shall become mighty and immortal.
Verse 34 (padma.1.4.34)
tathaivāhaṁ kariṣyāmi yathā tridaśavidviṣaḥ na prāpsyaṁtyamṛtaṁ devāḥ kevalaṁ kleśabhāginaḥ
O gods, I shall so arrange matters that your enemies the Daityas shall not obtain the nectar, but shall only share in the toil."
Verse 35 (padma.1.4.35)
ityuktā devadevena sarva eva tataḥ surāḥ saṁdhānamasuraiḥ kṛtvā yatnavaṁto'mṛtebhavan
Thus addressed by the God of gods, all the gods then made a pact with the Asuras and became intent upon obtaining the nectar.
Verse 36 (padma.1.4.36)
sarvauṣadhīḥ samānīya devadaiteyadānavāḥ kṣiptvā kṣīrābdhipayasi śaradabhrāmalatviṣi
The gods, Daityas and Danavas, having gathered all herbs, cast them into the waters of the Ocean of Milk, radiant as an autumn cloud.
Verse 37 (padma.1.4.37)
maṁthānaṁ maṁdaraṁ kṛtvā netraṁ kṛtvā ca vāsukim tato mathitumārabdhā rājeṁdra tarasāmṛtam
Making Mandara the churning-rod and Vasuki the cord, O lord of kings, they then began forcefully to churn for the nectar.
Verse 38 (padma.1.4.38)
vibudhāḥ sahitāḥ sarve yataḥ pucchaṁ tataḥ sthitāḥ viṣṇunā vāsukerddaityāḥ pūrvakāye niveśitāḥ
All the gods together took their place at the tail end, while by Vishnu's arrangement the Daityas were stationed toward the head.
Verse 39 (padma.1.4.39)
te tasya prāṇavātena vahninā ca hatattviṣaḥ nistejaso'surāḥ sarve babhūvuramaradyute
Scorched by that serpent's breath and by fire, they lost their luster; O bright one among the immortals, all the Asuras became devoid of vigor.
Verse 40 (padma.1.4.40)
tenaiva mukhaniḥśvāsavāyunātha balāhakaiḥ pucchapradeśe varṣadbhistadā cāppayitāḥ surāḥ
By that same breath from the mouth, turned to clouds and raining down at the region of the tail, the gods were meanwhile refreshed.
Verse 41 (padma.1.4.41)
kṣīrodamadhye bhagavānbrahmā brahmavidāṁ varaḥ mahādevo mahātejā viṣṇupṛṣṭhanivāsinau
In the midst of the Ocean of Milk, the illustrious Brahma, foremost of the knowers of Brahman, and the greatly radiant Mahadeva, both took their stand upon Vishnu's back.
Verse 42 (padma.1.4.42)
bāhubhyāṁ maṁdaraṁ gṛhya padmavatsa paraṁtapaḥ śṛṁkhale ca tadā kṛtvā gṛhītvā maṁdarācalam
Grasping Mandara with his two arms as one grasps a lotus stalk, O scorcher of foes, and binding it fast with chains, he held the mountain firm.
Verse 43 (padma.1.4.43)
devānāṁ dānavānāṁ ca balamadhye vyavasthitaḥ kṣīrodamadhye bhagavānkūrmarūpī svayaṁ hariḥ
The illustrious Hari himself, in the form of a tortoise, stood in the midst of the Ocean of Milk, between the armies of gods and Danavas.
Verse 44 (padma.1.4.44)
anyena tejasā devānupabṛṁhitavānhariḥ mathyamāne tatastasminkṣīrābdhau devadānavaiḥ
With another form of his power, Hari strengthened the gods. Then, as that Ocean of Milk was being churned by gods and Danavas,
Verse 45 (padma.1.4.45)
havirdhānyabhavatpūrvaṁ surabhiḥ surapūjitā jagmurmudaṁ tadā devā dānavāśca mahāmate
O great-minded one, first arose Surabhi, the cow of oblations, worshipped by the gods; and the gods and Danavas rejoiced at the sight.
Verse 46 (padma.1.4.46)
vyākṣiptacetasaḥ sarve babhūvustimitekṣaṇāḥ kimetaditi siddhānāṁ divi ciṁtayatāṁ tadā
All became astonished, their eyes fixed in wonder; then, as the Siddhas in heaven pondered, "What is this?"—
Verse 47 (padma.1.4.47)
babhūva vāruṇī devī madāghūrṇitalocanā kṛtāvarttā tatastasmātpraskhalaṁtī pade pade
the goddess Varuni arose, her eyes reeling with intoxication, whirling about and stumbling at every step.
Verse 48 (padma.1.4.48)
ekavastrā muktakeśī raktāṁtastabdhalocanā ahaṁ balapradā devī māṁ vā gṛhṇantu dānavāḥ
Clad in a single garment, hair loose, her red eyes fixed and unmoving, she said: "I am the goddess who bestows strength — let the Danavas take me!"
Verse 49 (padma.1.4.49)
aśuciṁ vāruṇīṁ matvā tyaktavaṁtastadā surāḥ jagṛhustāṁ tadā daityā grahaṇāntesurābhavat
Considering Varuni impure, the gods rejected her; the Daityas then took her, and from that very taking (a-sura, opposed to Sura) they came to be called Asuras.
Verse 50 (padma.1.4.50)
maṁthane pārijātobhūddeva śrīnaṁdano drumaḥ rūpaudāryyaguṇopetāstataścāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ
In the churning arose the divine tree Parijata, the delight of Shri, endowed with beauty and nobility; and then arose the hosts of Apsarases,
Verse 51 (padma.1.4.51)
ṣaṣṭikoṭyastadā jātāssāmānyā deva dānavaiḥ sarvāstāḥ kṛtapūrvāstu sāmānyāḥ puṇyakarmaṇā
sixty crores of them born, O king, common to both gods and Danavas — all made common property beforehand through their own meritorious deeds.
Verse 52 (padma.1.4.52)
tataḥ śītāṁśurabhavaddevānāṁ prītidāyakaḥ yayāce śaṁkaro devo jaṭābhūṣaṇakṛnmama
Then arose the cool-rayed moon, bringer of delight to the gods; the god Shankara begged for it: "let it be an ornament for my matted locks."
Verse 53 (padma.1.4.53)
bhaviṣyati na saṁdeho gṛhītoyaṁ mayā śaśī anumene ca taṁ brahmā bhūṣaṇāya harasya tu
"This moon, taken by me, shall without doubt become mine." And Brahma consented that it become an ornament for Hara.
Verse 54 (padma.1.4.54)
tato viṣaṁ samutpannaṁ kālakūṭaṁ bhayāvahaṁ tena caivārditāssarve dānavāḥ saha daivataiḥ
Then arose the terrifying poison Kalakuta; and by it all the Danavas together with the gods were afflicted.
Verse 55 (padma.1.4.55)
mahādevena tatpītaṁ viṣaṁ gṛhya yadṛcchayā tasya pānānnīlakaṁṭhastadā jāto maheśvaraḥ
That poison Mahadeva took up of his own free will and drank; from drinking it, the great Lord then became blue-throated, Nilakantha.
Verse 56 (padma.1.4.56)
pītāvaśeṣaṁ nāgāstu kṣīrābdhestu samutthitam tato dhanvaṁtarirjātaḥ śvetāṁbaradharaḥ svayam
The remainder of that poison was drunk by the serpents; and thereafter, from the Ocean of Milk, Dhanvantari himself was born, clad in white garments—
Verse 57 (padma.1.4.57)
bibhratkamaṁḍaluṁ pūrṇamamṛtasya samutthitaḥ tataḥ svasthamanaskāste vaidyarājasya darśanāt
bearing a vessel full of nectar as he arose. Then, at the sight of the king of physicians, all became easy in mind.
Verse 58 (padma.1.4.58)
tataścāśvaḥ samutpanno nāgaścairāvatastathā tata sphuratkāṁtīmativikāsi kamalesthitā
Then arose the horse Uchchaihshravas, and likewise the elephant Airavata; then, upon a fully-blossomed lotus, radiant with gleaming splendor,
Verse 59 (padma.1.4.59)
śrīrddevī payasastasmādutthitā dhṛtapaṁkajā tāṁ tuṣṭavurmudāyuktāḥ śrīsūktena maharṣayaḥ
the goddess Shri arose from those waters, holding a lotus. The great sages, filled with joy, praised her with the Shri-sukta.
Verse 60 (padma.1.4.60)
viśvāvasumukhāstasyā gaṁdharvāḥ purato jaguḥ ghṛtācīpramukhāstatra nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ
The Gandharvas, headed by Vishvavasu, sang before her; and there the hosts of Apsarases, headed by Ghritachi, danced.
Verse 61 (padma.1.4.61)
gaṁgādyāḥ saritastoyaiḥ snānārthamupatasthire diggajā hemapātrasthamādāya vimalaṁ jalam
The Ganga and other rivers came near with their waters for her bath; the elephants of the quarters, taking pure water in golden vessels,
Verse 62 (padma.1.4.62)
snāpayāṁcakrire devīṁ sarvalokamaheśvarīm kṣīrodastu svayaṁ tasyai mālāmamlānapaṁkajām
bathed the goddess, the great sovereign lady of all worlds. And the Ocean of Milk himself gave her a garland of unfading lotuses,
Verse 63 (padma.1.4.63)
dadau vibhūṣaṇānyaṁge viśvakarmā cakāra ha divyamālyāṁbaradharāṁ snātāṁ bhūṣaṇabhūṣitām
and Vishvakarma fashioned ornaments for her limbs. Bathed, wearing divine garlands and garments, adorned with ornaments—
Verse 64 (padma.1.4.64)
iṁdrādyāścāmaragaṇā vidyādharamahoragāḥ dānavāśca mahādaityā rākṣasāḥ saha guhyakaiḥ
Indra and the other hosts of immortals, Vidyadharas, great serpents, Danavas, great Daityas, Rakshasas together with the Guhyakas—
Verse 65 (padma.1.4.65)
kanyāmabhilaṣanti sma tato brahmā uvāca ha vāsudeva tvamevaināṁ mayā dattāṁ gṛhāṇa vai
all desired the maiden. Then Brahma spoke: "O Vasudeva, do you yourself accept her, given by me.
Verse 66 (padma.1.4.66)
devāśca dānavāścaiva pratiṣiddhā mayā tviha tuṣṭohaṁ bhavatastāvadalaulyeneha karmaṇā
Gods and Danavas alike have been forbidden here by me; I am pleased with you on account of your freedom from greed in this matter."
Verse 67 (padma.1.4.67)
sā tu śrīrbrahmaṇā proktā devi gachasva keśavaṁ mayā dattaṁ patiṁ prāpya modasva śāśvatīḥ samāḥ
And Brahma said to Shri: "O goddess, go to Keshava; having obtained the husband given by me, rejoice for eternal years."
Verse 68 (padma.1.4.68)
paśyatāṁ sarvadevānāṁ gatā vakṣasthalaṁ hareḥ tato vakṣasthalaṁ prāpya devaṁ vacanamabravīt
In the sight of all the gods, she went to the breast of Hari; and having reached his breast, she spoke these words to the Lord:
Verse 69 (padma.1.4.69)
nāhaṁ tyājyā sadā deva sadaivādeśakāriṇī vakṣasthale nivatsyāmi sarvasya jagataḥ priya
"I am never to be abandoned, O Lord; ever obedient to your command, I shall dwell upon your breast, O beloved of the whole world."
Verse 70 (padma.1.4.70)
tatovalokitā devā viṣṇuvakṣasthalasthayā lakṣmyā rājeṁdra sahasā parāṁ nirvṛtimāgatāḥ
Then, O lord of kings, the gods, beheld with favor by Lakshmi as she abode upon Vishnu's breast, at once attained supreme bliss.
Verse 71 (padma.1.4.71)
udvegaṁ ca paraṁ jagmurddaityā viṣṇuparāṅmukhāḥ tyaktāstu dānavā lakṣmyā vipracittipurogamāḥ
But the Daityas, turned away from Vishnu, fell into supreme dismay; the Danavas, headed by Viprachitti, were abandoned by Lakshmi.
Verse 72 (padma.1.4.72)
tataste jagṛhurdaityā dhanvaṁtarikarasthitam amṛtaṁ tanmahāvīryyā daityāḥ pāpasamanvitāḥ
Then those mighty but sinful Daityas seized the nectar that was in the hand of Dhanvantari.
Verse 73 (padma.1.4.73)
māyayā lobhayitvā tu viṣṇuḥ strīrūpasaṁśrayaḥ āgatya dānavānprāha dīyatāṁ me kamaṁḍaluḥ
Then Vishnu, taking refuge in a woman's form and enticing them by illusion, came and said to the Danavas: "Give the vessel to me.
Verse 74 (padma.1.4.74)
yuṣmākaṁ vaśagā bhūtvā sthāsyāmi bhavatāṁ gṛhe tāṁ dṛṣṭvā rūpasaṁpannāṁ nārīṁ trailokyasuṁdarīm
Becoming subject to your will, I shall remain in your house." Seeing that woman, endowed with beauty, loveliest in the three worlds,
Verse 75 (padma.1.4.75)
prārthayānāssuvapuṣaṁ lobhopahatacetasaḥ dattvāmṛtaṁ tadā tasyai tatopaśyanta tegrataḥ
the Danavas, their minds overpowered by greed, courted her and gave her the nectar; then, before their very eyes,
Verse 76 (padma.1.4.76)
dānavebhyastadādāya devebhyaḥ pradademṛtaṁ tataḥ papuḥ suragaṇāḥ śakrādyāstattadāmṛtam
having taken it from the Danavas, she gave the nectar to the gods; then the hosts of gods, headed by Shakra, drank that nectar.
Verse 77 (padma.1.4.77)
udyatāyudhanistriṁśā daityāstāṁste samabhyayuḥ pītemṛte ca balibhirjitā daityacamūstataḥ
The Daityas, weapons and swords raised, fell upon them; but the nectar having been drunk, the strengthened gods defeated the Daitya army.
Verse 78 (padma.1.4.78)
vadhyamānā diśo bhejuḥ pātālaṁ viviśuśca te tato devā mudāyuktāḥ śaṁkhacakragadādharam
Being slain, they fled in all directions and entered the netherworld. Then the gods, filled with joy, went to the bearer of conch, discus and mace—
Verse 79 (padma.1.4.79)
praṇipatya yathāpūrvaṁ prayayuste triviṣṭapam tataḥprabhṛti te bhīṣma strīlolā dānavābhavan
having bowed as before, and went to heaven. From that time on, O Bhishma, the Danavas became prone to infatuation with women.
Verse 80 (padma.1.4.80)
apadhyātāstu kṛṣṇena gatāste tu rasātalam tataḥ sūryaḥ prasannābhaḥ prayayau svena vartmanā
Cursed by Krishna (Vishnu), they went down to Rasatala. Then the sun, its radiance restored, resumed its own course,
Verse 81 (padma.1.4.81)
jajvāla bhagavāṁścoccaiścārudīptirhutāśanaḥ dharme ca sarvabhūtānāṁ tadā matirajāyata
and the illustrious fire, of beautiful brilliance, blazed brightly; and then all beings' minds turned once more toward dharma.
Verse 82 (padma.1.4.82)
śriyāyuktaṁ ca trailokyaṁ viṣṇunā pratipālitaṁ devāstu te tadā proktā brahmaṇā lokadhāriṇā
The three worlds, now endowed with Shri, were guarded by Vishnu; and then those gods were addressed by Brahma, sustainer of the worlds:
Verse 83 (padma.1.4.83)
bhavatāṁ rakṣaṇārthāya mayā viṣṇurniyojitaḥ umāpatiśca deveśo yogakṣemaṁ kariṣyataḥ
"For your protection, Vishnu has been appointed by me; and the Lord of gods, spouse of Uma, shall also see to your welfare and security.
Verse 84 (padma.1.4.84)
upāsyamānau satataṁ yuṣmatkṣemakarau yataḥ tataḥ kṣemyau sadā caitau bhaviṣyete varapradau
Since these two, ever worshipped, will forever work for your welfare, these two shall always be the bestowers of security and boons."
Verse 85 (padma.1.4.85)
evamuktvā tu bhagavānjagāma gatimātmanaḥ adarśanaṁ gate deve sarvalokapitāmahe
Having said this, the illustrious one departed on his own way. When the god, Grandsire of all worlds, had gone out of sight—
Verse 86 (padma.1.4.86)
devalokaṁ gate śakre svaṁ lokaṁ hariśaṁkarau prāptau tu tatkṣaṇāddevau sthānaṁ kailāsameva ca
when Shakra had gone to the world of the gods, Hari and Shankara too, at that very moment, reached their own abodes — Vaikuntha and Kailasa.
Verse 87 (padma.1.4.87)
tatastu devarājena pālitaṁ bhuvanatrayam evaṁ lakṣmīrmahābhāgā utpannā kṣīrasāgarāt
Thereafter the three worlds were protected by the king of the gods. Thus the most fortunate Lakshmi was born from the Ocean of Milk.
Verse 88 (padma.1.4.88)
punaḥ khyātyāṁ samutpannā bhṛgoreṣā sanātanī śriyā saha samutpannā bhṛguṇā ca maharṣiṇā
Again, this eternal one was born from Khyati, wife of Bhrigu — born together with Shri through the great sage Bhrigu.
Verse 89 (padma.1.4.89)
svanāmnā nagarī caiva kṛtā pūrvaṁ sarittaṭe narmadāyāṁ mahārāja brahmaṇā cānumoditā
O great king, formerly a city was built in her own name on the bank of the river Narmada, with Brahma's approval.
Verse 90 (padma.1.4.90)
lakṣmīḥ puraṁ svapitre svaṁ saha kuñcikayā'pya ca āgatā devalokaṁ sā'yācatāgatya vai punaḥ
Lakshmi gave that city, together with its key, to her own father; then, having come to the world of the gods, she came again and made a request.
Verse 91 (padma.1.4.91)
lobhānna dattaṁ tu puraṁ prārthayānā yadā punaḥ bhṛgoḥ sakāśānnāvāpa tadā caivāha keśavam
But when, asking again, out of attachment the city was not given back by Bhrigu, she then spoke to Keshava:
Verse 92 (padma.1.4.92)
paribhūtā tu pitrāhaṁ gṛhītaṁ nagaraṁ mama tasya hastāttvamākṣipya puraṁ taccānaya svayam
"I have been slighted by my own father — my city has been seized. Do you yourself take that city from his hands and bring it back."
Verse 93 (padma.1.4.93)
taṁ gatvā puṁḍarīkākṣo devaścakragadādharaḥ bhṛguṁ sānunayaṁ prāha kanyāyai puramarpaya
Going to him, the lotus-eyed god, bearer of discus and mace, spoke to Bhrigu conciliatingly: "Give this city to the maiden.
Verse 94 (padma.1.4.94)
kuñcikātālike cobhe dīyetāṁ ca prasādataḥ bhṛgustaṁ kupitaḥ prāha nārpayiṣyāmyahaṁ puram
And let both the key and the lock be given back, graciously." Bhrigu, angered, said to him: "I shall not give up the city.
Verse 95 (padma.1.4.95)
na lakṣmyāstatpuraṁ deva mayā cedaṁ svayaṁ kṛtam bhagavannaiva dāsyāmi tyajākṣepaṁ tu keśava
That city does not belong to Lakshmi, O Lord — it was made by myself. O illustrious one, I shall not give it; abandon this reproach, O Keshava."
Verse 96 (padma.1.4.96)
taṁ prāha devo bhūyopi lakṣmyāstatpuramarpaya sarvathā tu tvayā tyājyaṁ vacanānme mahāmune
The god said to him again: "Give that city to Lakshmi; in every way it must be relinquished by you at my word, O great sage."
Verse 97 (padma.1.4.97)
tataḥ kopasamāviṣṭo bhṛgurapyāha keśavam pakṣapātena māṁ sādho bhāryāyā bādhasedhunā
Then, overcome with anger, Bhrigu too said to Keshava: "O good one, out of partiality for your consort, you oppress and obstruct me.
Verse 98 (padma.1.4.98)
nṛloke daśajanmāni lapsyase madhusūdana bhāryāyāste viyogena duḥkhānyanubhaviṣyasi
In the world of men you shall take ten births, O Madhusudana; through separation from your wife you shall experience sorrows."
Verse 99 (padma.1.4.99)
evaṁ śāpaṁ dadau tasmai bhṛguḥ paramakopanaḥ viṣṇunā ca punastasya dattaḥ śāpo mahātmanā
Thus Bhrigu, in extreme wrath, gave him this curse. And by the great-souled Vishnu, in turn, a curse was given to him as well:
Verse 100 (padma.1.4.100)
na cāpatyakṛtāṁ prītiṁ prāpsyase munipuṁgava śāpaṁ dattvā ṛṣestasya brahmalokaṁ jagāma ha
"You shall never obtain the joy that comes from offspring, O foremost of sages." Having given this curse to the sage, he (Vishnu) went to Brahmaloka.
Verse 101 (padma.1.4.101)
padmajanmānamāhedaṁ dṛṣṭvā devastu keśavaḥ bhagavaṁstava putrosau bhṛguḥ paramakopanaḥ
Having seen this, the god Keshava said to the lotus-born Brahma: "O Lord, this son of yours, Bhrigu, is extremely wrathful.
Verse 102 (padma.1.4.102)
niṣkāraṇaṁ ca tenāhaṁ śapto janmāni mānuṣe lapsyase daśadhā tvaṁ hi tato duḥkhānyanekaśaḥ
And without cause he has cursed me: 'You shall take ten births among men, and thereby suffer many sorrows.'
Verse 103 (padma.1.4.103)
bhāryāviyogajā pīḍā balapauruṣanāśinī tyatkvā cāhamimaṁ lokaṁ śayiṣye ca mahodadhau
'The anguish born of separation from my wife shall destroy my strength and valor.' I shall abandon this world and lie down in the great ocean,
Verse 104 (padma.1.4.104)
devakāryeṣu sarveṣu punaścāvāhanaṁ kriyāḥ tathā bruvaṁtaṁ taṁ devaṁ brahmā lokagurustadā
and in all the affairs of the gods, you shall again have to invoke me." As the god spoke thus, Brahma, the preceptor of the worlds, then,
Verse 105 (padma.1.4.105)
prasādanārthaṁ viṣṇostu stutimetāṁ cakāra ha tvayā sṛṣṭaṁ jagadidaṁ padmaṁ nābhau viniḥsṛtam tatra cāhaṁ samutpannastava vaśyaśca keśava
in order to appease Vishnu, offered this praise: "By you was this universe created; from your navel came forth this lotus, and there I was born, subject to you, O Keshava.
Verse 106 (padma.1.4.106)
tvaṁ trātā sarvalokānāṁ sraṣṭā tvaṁ jagataḥ prabho trailokyaṁ na tvayā tyājyameṣa eva varo mama
You are the protector of all worlds, you, O Lord, are the creator of the universe. This alone is my request — that the three worlds not be abandoned by you."
Verse 107 (padma.1.4.107)
Take your ten births among men of your own accord, out of desire for the welfare of the worlds — no one has the power to curse you.
Verse 108 (padma.1.4.108)
koyaṁ bhṛguḥ kathaṁ tena śakyaṁ śaptuṁ janārdana mānayasva sadā viprānbrāhmaṇāste tanussvayam
Who indeed is Bhrigu, O Janardana, that he should be able to curse you? Always honor the brahmins — the brahmins are your own body.
Verse 109 (padma.1.4.109)
yoganidrāmupāsva tvaṁ kṣīrābdhau svapi hīśvara kāryakāle punastvāṁ tu bodhayiṣyāmi mādhava
Resort to yogic sleep, O Lord; sleep upon the Ocean of Milk. When occasion demands, I shall again awaken you, O Madhava.
Verse 110 (padma.1.4.110)
bhagavanneṣa tāvattu tvacchaktyā copabṛṁhitaḥ sarvakāryakaraḥ śakrastavaivāṁśena śatruhā
O Lord, this Shakra meanwhile, strengthened by your power, the doer of all tasks, slayer of enemies, is himself but a portion of you.
Verse 111 (padma.1.4.111)
trailokyaṁ pālayanneva tvadājñāṁ sa kariṣyati evaṁ stutastadā viṣṇurbrahmāṇamidamuktavān
Even while protecting the three worlds, he shall carry out your command." Thus praised, Vishnu then spoke this to Brahma:
Verse 112 (padma.1.4.112)
sarvametatkariṣyāmi yanmāṁ jñāpayase prabho adarśanaṁ gato devo brahmā taṁ nābhijajñivān
"All this I shall do, whatever you make known to me, O Lord." The god then went out of sight; Brahma perceived him no more.
Verse 113 (padma.1.4.113)
gate deve tadā viṣṇau brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ bhūyaścakāra vai sṛṣṭiṁ lokānāṁ prabhavaḥ prabhuḥ
When the god Vishnu had thus departed, Brahma, the Grandsire of the worlds, the mighty source of all beings, again undertook the work of creation.
Verse 114 (padma.1.4.114)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā nāradaḥ prāha vākyaṁ vākyavidāṁ varaḥ sahasraśīrṣā puruṣaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ sahasrapāt sarvavyāpī bhuvaḥ sparśādadhyatiṣṭhaddaśāṁgulam
Seeing him, Narada, foremost of speakers, uttered this word: "The Purusha has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet; all-pervading, he stands ten fingers beyond the earth, even from its very touch."
Verse 115 (padma.1.4.115)
yadbhūtaṁ yacca vai bhāvyaṁ sarvameva bhavānyataḥ tato viśvamidaṁ tāta tvatto bhūtaṁ bhaviṣyati
Whatever has been and whatever shall be, all this indeed is you; therefore, O father, this universe has arisen from you, and shall continue to arise from you.
Verse 116 (padma.1.4.116)
tvatto yajñaḥ sarvahutaḥ pṛṣadājyaṁ paśurdvidhā ṛcastvattotha sāmāni tvatta evābhijajñire
From you came the all-oblatory sacrifice, the curds-and-ghee offering, the twofold sacrificial animal; from you the Rig verses and the Sama chants likewise were born.
Verse 117 (padma.1.4.117)
tvatto yajñāstvajāyaṁta tvatto śvāścaiva daṁtinaḥ gāvastvattaḥ samudbhūtāḥ tvatto jātāvayomṛgāḥ
From you the sacrifices were born, from you the horses and the tuskers; from you the cattle arose, from you were born the goats and the sheep.
Verse 118 (padma.1.4.118)
tvanmukhādbrāhmaṇā jātāstvattaḥ kṣatramajāyata vaiśyāstavorujāḥ śūdrāstava padbhyāṁ samudgatāḥ
From your mouth the brahmins were born, from you the kshatriya order arose; the vaishyas were born from your thighs, and the shudras arose from your feet.
Verse 119 (padma.1.4.119)
akṣṇoḥ sūryonilaḥ śrotrāccaṁdramā manasastava prāṇoṁtaḥ suṣirājjāto mukhādagnirajāyata
From your eyes came the sun and the wind, from your ear the moon; the life-breath was born from the inner hollow, from your mouth fire arose.

Verse 128 (padma.1.4.128)

And you shall be the instructor of the [four] orders — this boon has been granted to you by me. Remain, my son, as you please, honored by the gods in heaven."
