evaṁ yajñe pravṛtte tu hūyamāneṣu cāgniṣu vibhūtiṁ tāṁ parāṁ tatra bhakṣyabhojyakṛtāṁ śubhām

surrounded by his host of forty-nine, this Vayu, god and lord of creatures, has come to the sacrifice.

and lord too of all herbs and creepers — the lord of the stars, your son-in-law, the moon, has come here together with his wives.
Verse 24 (padma.1.5.24)

rivers, streams, oceans, and continents together with mountains, domestic and wild animals — whatever moves and whatever moves not.
Verse 27 (padma.1.5.27)

puṇyā rājarṣayaścaiva pṛthivyāṁ ye ca pārthivāḥ varṇāścāśramiṇaścaiva sarve ye karmakāriṇaḥ
the pious royal sages, and all the rulers of the earth, the orders and the stages of life, all who perform ritual works—
Verse 29 (padma.1.5.29)
kimatra bahunoktena brāhmī sṛṣṭirihāgatā bhaginyo bhāgineyāśca bhaginīpatayastvime
why say more? All of Brahma's creation has come here. My sisters, my sisters' sons, and these, my sisters' husbands—
Verse 30 (padma.1.5.30)
svabhāryāsahitāḥ sarve saputrāssaha bāṁdhavāḥ tvayā samarcitāḥ sarve dānamānaparigrahaiḥ
all, together with their wives, sons, and kinsmen, have all been honored by you with gifts, respect, and hospitality.
Verse 31 (padma.1.5.31)
āmaṁtraṇā maṁtritānāṁ sarveṣāṁ mānanā kṛtā eka evātra bhagavānpatirme na samāgataḥ
An invitation and due honor has been given to all who were invited — only the one illustrious lord, my husband, has not come here.
Verse 32 (padma.1.5.32)
vinā tena tvidaṁ sarvaṁ śūnyavatpratibhāti me manye cāhaṁ tu bhavatā patirme na nimaṁtritaḥ
Without him, all this seems empty to me. I think that my husband was not invited by you.
Verse 33 (padma.1.5.33)
vismṛtaste bhavennūnaṁ sarvaṁ śaṁsatu me bhavān pulasya uvāca tasyāstaduktaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā dakṣaḥ prajāpatiḥ
Perhaps he simply slipped your memory — please tell me the whole truth of it. Pulastya said: Having heard these words spoken by her, Daksha, the lord of creatures,
Verse 34 (padma.1.5.34)
patisneha samāyuktāṁ prāṇebhyopi garīyasīm aṁkamāropya tāṁ bālāṁ sādhvīṁ patiparāyaṇām
lifted onto his lap that girl — filled with love for her husband, dearer to him than his own life, virtuous, wholly devoted to her husband—
Verse 35 (padma.1.5.35)
pativratāṁ mahābhāgāṁ patipriyahitaiṣiṇīm prāha gaṁbhīrabhāvena śṛṇu vatse yathātatham
most fortunate, chaste, ever seeking her husband's welfare, and said to her gravely: Listen, my child, to the truth of it.
Verse 36 (padma.1.5.36)
yenādya kāraṇeneha patiste na nimaṁtritaḥ kapālapātradhṛkcarmī bhasmāvṛta tanustathā
For this reason your husband was not invited here today: he carries a skull for a begging bowl, wears animal hide, and his body is covered with ashes.
Verse 37 (padma.1.5.37)
śūlī muṇḍī ca nagnaśca śmaśāne ramate sadā vibhūtyāṅgāni sarvāṇi parimārṣṭi ca nityaśaḥ
Trident-bearing and shaven-headed, and naked, he ever delights in cremation grounds, and daily smears all his limbs with ash.
Verse 38 (padma.1.5.38)
vyāghracarmaparīdhāno hasticarmaparicchadaḥ kapālamālaṁ śirasi khaṭvāgaṁ ca kare sthitaṁ
Clothed in a tiger-skin, wrapped in an elephant-hide, a garland of skulls upon his head, a skull-topped staff in his hand,
Verse 39 (padma.1.5.39)
kaṭyāṁ vai gonasaṁ badhvā liṁge'sthnāṁ valayaṁ tathā pannagānāṁ tu rājānamupavītaṁ ca vāsukim
a great serpent tied around his waist, a ring of bones on his phallic emblem, and Vasuki, king of serpents, worn as his sacred thread,
Verse 40 (padma.1.5.40)
kṛtvā bhramati cānena rūpeṇa satataṁ kṣitau nagnā gaṇāḥ piśācāśca bhūtasaṁghā hyanekaśaḥ
wandering thus about the earth in this form, ceaselessly, with naked spirits, Pishachas, and countless hosts of ghosts.
Verse 41 (padma.1.5.41)
trinetraśca triśūlī ca gītanṛtyaratassadā kutsitāni tathānyāni sadā te kurute patiḥ
Three-eyed and trident-bearing, ever delighting in song and dance — your husband constantly does such other despicable things.
Verse 42 (padma.1.5.42)
trapākaro bhavenmahyaṁ devānāṁ saṁnidhiḥ kathaṁ kīdṛkca vasanaṁ tasya ketanaṁ prati nārhati
He would be a source of shame to me — how could his presence be fitting among the gods? And his attire too is quite unsuited to any respectable place.
Verse 43 (padma.1.5.43)
etairdoṣairmayā vatse lokānāṁ caiva lajjayā nāhvānaṁ tu kṛtaṁ tasya kāraṇena mayā sute
For these faults, my child, and out of shame before the world, no invitation was extended to him by me for this very reason, my daughter.
Verse 44 (padma.1.5.44)
yajñasyāsya samāptau tu pūjāṁ kṛtvā tvayā saha ānīya tava bharttāraṁ tvayā saha trilocanam
At the completion of this sacrifice, having performed worship together with you, I shall bring your three-eyed husband here,
Verse 45 (padma.1.5.45)
trailokyasyādhikāṁ pūjāṁ kariṣyāmi ca satkṛtaiḥ etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ trapāyāḥ kāraṇaṁ mahat
and I shall render him worship greater than that of the three worlds, with due honors. This is the whole great reason for my shame, told to you.
Verse 46 (padma.1.5.46)
nātra manyustvayā kāryaḥ sarvaḥ svaṁ bhāgamarhati anyajanmani yairyādṛkkṛtaṁ karma śubhāśubham
You should not be angered over this — everyone deserves their own portion. Whatever good or bad deed was done by anyone in another birth,
Verse 47 (padma.1.5.47)
iha janmani te tādṛkputrike bhuṁjate phalam paritāpaṁ mā kṛthāstvaṁ phalaṁ bhuṁkṣva purākṛtam
in this birth, my daughter, one enjoys the corresponding fruit of it. Do not grieve — enjoy the fruit of your former deeds.
Verse 48 (padma.1.5.48)
śriyaṁ paragatāṁ dṛṣṭvā rūpasaubhāgyaśobhanām rūpaṁ ca kāṁtisaubhāgyaṁ ramyāṇyābharaṇāni ca
Seeing prosperity belonging to another, resplendent with beauty and good fortune — beauty, radiance, good fortune, and lovely ornaments,
Verse 49 (padma.1.5.49)
kulemahativaijanmavapuścātīvasuṁdaram pūrvabhāgyaistu labhyaṁte narairetāni suvrate
birth in a great family, and an exceedingly beautiful body — these, O woman of good vows, are obtained by people through their prior merit.
Verse 50 (padma.1.5.50)
mātmānaṁ pariniṁdethāmāca bhāgyāni suvrate phalaṁ caivaṁ vidhikṛtaṁ dātuṁ kasya tu kaḥ kṣamaḥ
Do not blame yourself, nor your fortunes, O woman of good vows. And who indeed has the power to bestow a fruit thus ordained by fate?
Verse 51 (padma.1.5.51)
nāsti vai balavānkaścinnamūḍho na ca paṁḍitaḥ pāṁḍityaṁ ca balaṁ caiva jāyate pūrvakarmaṇaḥ
There is truly no one who is inherently strong, foolish, or wise; wisdom and strength alike arise from one's former deeds.
Verse 52 (padma.1.5.52)
ete devā divaṁ prāptāḥ śobhamānāḥ sthitāściram puṇyena tapasā caiva kṣetreṣuvividheṣuca
These gods have attained heaven and dwell there resplendent for long ages — through merit, through austerity, and through various sacred sites.
Verse 53 (padma.1.5.53)
yadebhirārjitaṁ puṇyaṁ tasyaite phalabhāginaḥ evamuktā tataḥ sā tu satī bhīṣmaruṣānvitā
Whatever merit was earned by them, of that they are the sharers of the fruit. Thus addressed, Sati then, overcome with fierce anger,
Verse 54 (padma.1.5.54)
viniṁdamānā pitaraṁ krodhenāruṇitekṣaṇā evametadyathā tāta tvayā coktaṁ mamāgrataḥ
reproaching her father, her eyes reddened with rage, said: It is indeed so, father, as has been said by you before me.
Verse 55 (padma.1.5.55)
sarvo janaḥ puṇyabhāgī puṇyena labhate śriyaṁ puṇyena labhate janma puṇye bhogāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ
Every person is a sharer of merit; through merit one obtains prosperity; through merit one obtains birth; enjoyments are established in merit.
Verse 56 (padma.1.5.56)
tadayaṁ jagatāmīśaḥ sarveṣāmuttamottamaḥ sthānānyetāni sarveṣāṁ dattānyetena dhīmatā
Therefore this Lord of the worlds, the best of the best, has himself, in his wisdom, given all these gods their respective positions.
Verse 57 (padma.1.5.57)
ye guṇāstasya devasya vaktuṁ jihvāpi vedhasaḥ na śaktā khyāpane tasya devasya parameṣṭhinaḥ
The virtues of that god — even the tongue of the Creator himself is not capable of fully proclaiming them, of that god, the Supreme Being.
Verse 58 (padma.1.5.58)
bhasmāsthi ca kapālāni śmaśāne vasatistathā gonasādyāśca ye sarpāḥ sarve te bhūṣaṇīkṛtāḥ
Ashes, bones, and skulls, and likewise his dwelling in the cremation ground, the great serpents — all these he has made into ornaments.
Verse 59 (padma.1.5.59)
bhūtapretagaṇāstasya piśācā guhyakāstathā eṣa dhātā vidhātā ca eṣa pālayitā diśaḥ
The hosts of Bhutas, Pretas, Pishachas, and Guhyakas are his own; he is the sustainer and the ordainer, and he is the protector of the directions.
Verse 60 (padma.1.5.60)
prasādena ca rudrasya prāptasvargaḥ puraṁdaraḥ yadi rudresti devatvaṁ yadi sarvagataḥ śivaḥ
