The Manifestation of Narasimha
Verse 1 (padma.1.45.1)
भीष्म उवाच। इदानीं श्रोतुमिच्छामि हिरण्यकशिपोर्वधम्। नरसिंहस्य माहात्म्यं तथा पापविनाशनम्
bhīṣma uvāca idānīṁ śrotumicchāmi hiraṇyakaśiporvadham narasiṁhasya māhātmyaṁ tathā pāpavināśanam
Bhishma said: "Now I wish to hear of the slaying of Hiranyakashipu, and the greatness of Narasimha, which destroys sin."
Verse 2 (padma.1.45.2)
पुलस्त्य उवाच। पुरा कृतयुगे राजन्हिरण्यकशिपुः प्रभुः। दैत्यानामादिपुरुषश्चकार सुमहत्तपः
pulastya uvāca purā kṛtayuge rājanhiraṇyakaśipuḥ prabhuḥ daityānāmādipuruṣaścakāra sumahattapaḥ
Pulastya said: "Long ago, in the Krita Yuga, O king, the mighty Hiranyakashipu, the first among the daityas, performed great austerity."
Verse 3 (padma.1.45.3)
दशवर्षसहस्राणि दशवर्षशतानि च। जलवासी समभवत्स्नानमौनधृतव्रतः
daśavarṣasahasrāṇi daśavarṣaśatāni ca jalavāsī samabhavatsnānamaunadhṛtavrataḥ
For ten thousand years and ten hundred years he dwelt in water, bathing, silent, and holding to his vow.
Verse 4 (padma.1.45.4)
वृतः शमदमाभ्यां च ब्रह्मचर्येण चैव हि। ब्रह्मा प्रीतोऽभवत्तस्य तपसा नियमेन च
vṛtaḥ śamadamābhyāṁ ca brahmacaryeṇa caiva hi brahmā prīto'bhavattasya tapasā niyamena ca
Endowed with tranquility and self-control, and with celibacy, Brahma became pleased by his austerity and discipline.
Verse 5 (padma.1.45.5)
ततः स्वयंभूर्भगवान्स्वयमागत्य तत्र हि। विमानेनार्कवर्णेन हंसयुक्तेन भास्वता
tataḥ svayaṁbhūrbhagavānsvayamāgatya tatra hi vimānenārkavarṇena haṁsayuktena bhāsvatā
Then the self-born Lord himself came there, in a shining chariot the colour of the sun, yoked with swans.
Verse 6 (padma.1.45.6)
आदित्यैर्वसुभिः साध्यैर्मरुद्भिर्दैवतैस्सह। रुद्रैर्विश्वसहायैश्च यक्षराक्षसपन्नगैः
ādityairvasubhiḥ sādhyairmarudbhirdaivataissaha rudrairviśvasahāyaiśca yakṣarākṣasapannagaiḥ
accompanied by the Adityas, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Maruts and the gods, by the Rudras, the Vishvedevas, and by yakshas, rakshasas and serpents,
Verse 7 (padma.1.45.7)
दिग्भिश्चैव विदिग्भिश्च नदीभिः सागरैस्तथा। नक्षत्रैश्च मुहूर्तैश्च खचरैश्च महाग्रहैः
digbhiścaiva vidigbhiśca nadībhiḥ sāgaraistathā nakṣatraiśca muhūrtaiśca khacaraiśca mahāgrahaiḥ
by the directions and intermediate directions, by rivers and oceans, by the constellations, the auspicious hours, the sky-wanderers, and the great planets,
Verse 8 (padma.1.45.8)
देवैर्ब्रह्मर्षिभिः सार्द्धं सिद्धैः सप्तर्षिभिस्तथा। राजर्षिभिः पुण्यकृद्भिर्गंधर्वाप्सरसांगणैः
devairbrahmarṣibhiḥ sārddhaṁ siddhaiḥ saptarṣibhistathā rājarṣibhiḥ puṇyakṛdbhirgaṁdharvāpsarasāṁgaṇaiḥ
together with the gods and the brahmarshis, with the siddhas and the seven great sages, with royal seers of virtuous deeds, and with hosts of gandharvas and apsaras,
Verse 9 (padma.1.45.9)
चराचरगुरुः श्रीमान्वृतः सर्वैर्दिवौकसैः। ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मविदां श्रेष्ठो दैत्यं वचनमब्रवीत्
carācaraguruḥ śrīmānvṛtaḥ sarvairdivaukasaiḥ brahmā brahmavidāṁ śreṣṭho daityaṁ vacanamabravīt
the glorious teacher of all moving and unmoving beings, surrounded by all the dwellers of heaven — Brahma, foremost among the knowers of Brahman, spoke these words to the daitya:
Verse 10 (padma.1.45.10)
प्रीतोस्मि तव भक्तस्य तपसाऽनेन सुव्रत। वरं वरय भद्रं ते यथेष्टं काममाप्नुहि
prītosmi tava bhaktasya tapasā'nena suvrata varaṁ varaya bhadraṁ te yatheṣṭaṁ kāmamāpnuhi
"I am pleased with you, my devotee, by this austerity, O one of good vows. Choose a boon; may good befall you — obtain your desire as you wish."
Verse 11 (padma.1.45.11)
हिरण्यकशिपुरुवाच। न देवासुरगंधर्वा न यक्षोरगराक्षसाः। न मानुषाः पिशाचाश्च हन्युर्मां देवसत्तम
hiraṇyakaśipuruvāca na devāsuragaṁdharvā na yakṣoragarākṣasāḥ na mānuṣāḥ piśācāśca hanyurmāṁ devasattama
Hiranyakashipu said: "Let neither gods, asuras, nor gandharvas, nor yakshas, serpents, or rakshasas, nor men or pishachas slay me, O best of gods —"
Verse 12 (padma.1.45.12)
ऋषयो मानवाः शापैर्न शपेयुः पितामह। यदि मे भगवान्प्रीतो वर एष वृतो मया
ṛṣayo mānavāḥ śāpairna śapeyuḥ pitāmaha yadi me bhagavānprīto vara eṣa vṛto mayā
"nor let sages or men curse me with curses, O grandsire — if the Lord is pleased with me, this is the boon I choose."
Verse 13 (padma.1.45.13)
न शस्त्रेण न चास्त्रेण गिरिणा पादपेन वा। न शुष्केण न चार्द्रेण न स्याच्चान्येन मे वधः
na śastreṇa na cāstreṇa giriṇā pādapena vā na śuṣkeṇa na cārdreṇa na syāccānyena me vadhaḥ
"Let my death come neither by weapon nor by missile, nor by mountain or tree, neither by what is dry nor by what is wet, nor by any other means."
Verse 14 (padma.1.45.14)
भवेयमहमेवार्कः सोमो वायुर्हुताशनः। सलिलं चांतरिक्षं च नक्षत्राणि दिशो दश
bhaveyamahamevārkaḥ somo vāyurhutāśanaḥ salilaṁ cāṁtarikṣaṁ ca nakṣatrāṇi diśo daśa
"Let me myself become the sun, the moon, the wind, fire, water, and the sky, the stars, and the ten directions —"
Verse 15 (padma.1.45.15)
अहं क्रोधश्च कामश्च वरुणो वासवो यमः। धनदश्च धनाध्यक्षो यक्षः किंपुरुषाधिपः
ahaṁ krodhaśca kāmaśca varuṇo vāsavo yamaḥ dhanadaśca dhanādhyakṣo yakṣaḥ kiṁpuruṣādhipaḥ
"let me be anger and desire, Varuna, Indra, and Yama, Kubera the lord of wealth, the overseer of riches, the lord of the yakshas and of the Kimpurushas."
Verse 16 (padma.1.45.16)
ब्रह्मोवाच । एष दिव्यो वरस्तात मया दत्तस्तवाद्भुतः। सर्वकामप्रदो वत्स प्राप्स्यसि त्वं न संशयः
brahmovāca eṣa divyo varastāta mayā dattastavādbhutaḥ sarvakāmaprado vatsa prāpsyasi tvaṁ na saṁśayaḥ
Brahma said: "This wondrous, divine boon, O child, I have granted you; it fulfils every desire. You shall surely obtain it, my son, without doubt."
Verse 17 (padma.1.45.17)
एवमुक्त्वा स भगवान्जगामाकाशमेव हि। वैराजं ब्रह्मसदनं ब्रह्मर्षिगणसेवितम्
evamuktvā sa bhagavānjagāmākāśameva hi vairājaṁ brahmasadanaṁ brahmarṣigaṇasevitam
Having said this, the Lord went up into the sky, to the Viraja abode of Brahma, attended by hosts of brahmarshis.
Verse 18 (padma.1.45.18)
ततो देवाश्च गंधर्वा ऋषिभिः सह चारणाः। वरप्रदानं श्रुत्वैवं पितामहमुपस्थिताः
tato devāśca gaṁdharvā ṛṣibhiḥ saha cāraṇāḥ varapradānaṁ śrutvaivaṁ pitāmahamupasthitāḥ
Then the gods, the gandharvas, together with the sages and the charanas, having heard of this granting of the boon, approached the Grandsire.
Verse 19 (padma.1.45.19)
देवा ऊचुः। वरप्रदानाद्भगवन्वधिष्यति स नोऽसुरः। तत्प्रसादश्च भगवन्वधोप्यस्य विचिंत्यताम्
devā ūcuḥ varapradānādbhagavanvadhiṣyati sa no'suraḥ tatprasādaśca bhagavanvadhopyasya viciṁtyatām
The gods said: "O Lord, by this granting of the boon, this asura will destroy us. Even as you show him grace, O Lord, let his destruction also be considered."
Verse 20 (padma.1.45.20)
भगवान्सर्वभूतानामादिकर्त्ता स्वयंप्रभुः। स्रष्टा च हव्यकव्यानामव्यक्तप्रकृतिः परः
bhagavānsarvabhūtānāmādikarttā svayaṁprabhuḥ sraṣṭā ca havyakavyānāmavyaktaprakṛtiḥ paraḥ
"The Lord is the primal maker of all beings, self-luminous, the creator of oblations to gods and ancestors, the supreme one whose nature is unmanifest."
Verse 21 (padma.1.45.21)
सर्वलोकहितं वाक्यं श्रुत्वा देवः प्रजापतिः। आश्वासयामास तदा सुशीतैर्वचनांबुभिः
sarvalokahitaṁ vākyaṁ śrutvā devaḥ prajāpatiḥ āśvāsayāmāsa tadā suśītairvacanāṁbubhiḥ
Hearing these words spoken for the good of all worlds, the god Prajapati then comforted them with words cool as water.
Verse 22 (padma.1.45.22)
अवश्यं त्रिदशानेन प्राप्तव्यं तपसः फलं। तपसोऽन्तेऽस्य भगवान्वधं विष्णुः करिष्यति
avaśyaṁ tridaśānena prāptavyaṁ tapasaḥ phalaṁ tapaso'nte'sya bhagavānvadhaṁ viṣṇuḥ kariṣyati
"This fruit of his austerity must certainly come to pass — at the end of his tapas, the Lord Vishnu himself will accomplish his slaying."
Verse 23 (padma.1.45.23)
तच्छ्रुत्वा विबुधा वाक्यं सर्वे पंकजजाननात्। स्वानि स्थानानि दिव्यानि विप्रजग्मुर्मुदान्विताः
tacchrutvā vibudhā vākyaṁ sarve paṁkajajānanāt svāni sthānāni divyāni viprajagmurmudānvitāḥ
Hearing this word from the lotus-born one, all the gods, filled with joy, returned each to their own divine abodes.
Verse 24 (padma.1.45.24)
लब्धमात्रे वरे सोथ प्रजास्सर्वा अबाधत। हिरण्यकशिपुर्दैत्यो वरदानेन गर्वितः
labdhamātre vare sotha prajāssarvā abādhata hiraṇyakaśipurdaityo varadānena garvitaḥ
As soon as the boon was obtained, the daitya Hiranyakashipu, made arrogant by the granting of the boon, began to oppress all creatures.
Verse 25 (padma.1.45.25)
आश्रमेषु महाभागान्मुनीन्वै शंसितव्रतान्। सत्यधर्मपरान्दान्तान्धर्षयामास दानवः
āśrameṣu mahābhāgānmunīnvai śaṁsitavratān satyadharmaparāndāntāndharṣayāmāsa dānavaḥ
The danava assaulted the greatly fortunate sages in their hermitages, men of praised vows, devoted to truth and dharma, and self-controlled.
Verse 26 (padma.1.45.26)
देवांस्त्रिभुवनस्थांश्च पराजित्य महासुरः। त्रैलोक्यं वशमानीय स्वर्गे वसति दानवः
devāṁstribhuvanasthāṁśca parājitya mahāsuraḥ trailokyaṁ vaśamānīya svarge vasati dānavaḥ
Having conquered the gods dwelling in the three worlds, the great asura brought the three worlds under his sway and dwelt in heaven, that danava.
Verse 27 (padma.1.45.27)
यदा वरमदोत्सिक्तश्चोदितः कालधर्मिणा। यज्ञियानकरोद्दैत्यानयज्ञीयांश्च दैवतान्
yadā varamadotsiktaścoditaḥ kāladharmiṇā yajñiyānakaroddaityānayajñīyāṁśca daivatān
When, swollen with the pride of his boon and driven on by the force of time, he made the daityas fit to receive sacrifice and the gods unfit for it,
Verse 28 (padma.1.45.28)
तथा दैत्याश्च साध्याश्च विश्वे च वसवस्तथा। रुद्रा देवगणा यक्षा देवद्विजमहर्षयः
tathā daityāśca sādhyāśca viśve ca vasavastathā rudrā devagaṇā yakṣā devadvijamaharṣayaḥ
then the daityas and the Sadhyas, the Vishvedevas and the Vasus, the Rudras, the hosts of gods, the yakshas, and the divine twice-born great sages —
Verse 29 (padma.1.45.29)
शरण्यं शरणं विष्णुमुपतस्थुर्महाबलम्। देवदेवं यज्ञमयं वासुदेवं सनातनम्
śaraṇyaṁ śaraṇaṁ viṣṇumupatasthurmahābalam devadevaṁ yajñamayaṁ vāsudevaṁ sanātanam
all approached for refuge the mighty Vishnu, the giver of shelter, the god of gods, whose very self is sacrifice, the eternal Vasudeva.
Verse 30 (padma.1.45.30)
देवा ऊचुः। नारायण महाभाग देवास्त्वां शरणं गताः। त्रायस्व जहि दैत्येंद्रं हिरण्यकशिपुं प्रभो
devā ūcuḥ nārāyaṇa mahābhāga devāstvāṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ trāyasva jahi daityeṁdraṁ hiraṇyakaśipuṁ prabho
The gods said: "O Narayana, greatly fortunate one, we gods have come to you for refuge. Protect us, O Lord, and slay the lord of the daityas, Hiranyakashipu."
Verse 31 (padma.1.45.31)
त्वं हि नः परमोदाता त्वं हि नः परमो गुरुः। त्वं हि नः परमो देवो ब्रह्मादीनां सुरोत्तमः
tvaṁ hi naḥ paramodātā tvaṁ hi naḥ paramo guruḥ tvaṁ hi naḥ paramo devo brahmādīnāṁ surottamaḥ
"You alone are our supreme giver, you alone our supreme teacher; you alone are our supreme god, the best of gods even above Brahma and the others."
Verse 32 (padma.1.45.32)
विष्णुरुवाच। भयं त्यजद्ध्वममरा अभयं वो ददाम्यहम्। तथैव त्रिदिवं देवाः प्रतिपद्यत माचिरम्
viṣṇuruvāca bhayaṁ tyajaddhvamamarā abhayaṁ vo dadāmyaham tathaiva tridivaṁ devāḥ pratipadyata māciram
Vishnu said: "Cast away your fear, O immortals; I grant you freedom from fear. Return, O gods, to heaven itself without delay."
Verse 33 (padma.1.45.33)
एनं हि सगणं दैत्यं वरदानेन गर्वितम्। अवध्यममरेंद्राणां दानवेंद्रं निहन्म्यहम्
enaṁ hi sagaṇaṁ daityaṁ varadānena garvitam avadhyamamareṁdrāṇāṁ dānaveṁdraṁ nihanmyaham
"I myself shall slay this daitya together with his host — this lord of danavas, made arrogant by his boon, who is unslayable by the lords of the immortals."
Verse 34 (padma.1.45.34)
एवमुक्त्वा तु भगवान्विश्वपो विष्णुरव्ययः। हिरण्यकशिपुस्थानं जगाम हरिरीश्वरः
evamuktvā tu bhagavānviśvapo viṣṇuravyayaḥ hiraṇyakaśipusthānaṁ jagāma harirīśvaraḥ
Having said this, the imperishable Lord Vishnu, protector of the universe, Hari the Ishvara, went to the abode of Hiranyakashipu.
Verse 35 (padma.1.45.35)
तेजसा भास्काराकारः शशीकांत्येव चापरः। नरस्य कृत्वार्धतनुं सिंहस्यार्द्धतनुं तथा
tejasā bhāskārākāraḥ śaśīkāṁtyeva cāparaḥ narasya kṛtvārdhatanuṁ siṁhasyārddhatanuṁ tathā
Blazing in splendour like the sun, and yet as gentle as the beauty of the moon, having made half his body that of a man and half that of a lion —
Verse 36 (padma.1.45.36)
नारसिंहेन वपुषा पाणिं संगृह्य पाणिना। ततो ददर्श विस्तीर्णां दिव्यां रम्यां मनोरमाम्
nārasiṁhena vapuṣā pāṇiṁ saṁgṛhya pāṇinā tato dadarśa vistīrṇāṁ divyāṁ ramyāṁ manoramām
in that Man-Lion form, clasping hand within hand, he then beheld the vast, divine, delightful, and enchanting
Verse 37 (padma.1.45.37)
सर्वकामयुतां शुभ्रां हिरण्यकशिपोः सभाम्। विस्तीर्णां योजनशतं शतमध्यर्द्धमायताम्
sarvakāmayutāṁ śubhrāṁ hiraṇyakaśipoḥ sabhām vistīrṇāṁ yojanaśataṁ śatamadhyarddhamāyatām
assembly hall of Hiranyakashipu, radiant white and filled with every desired thing, extending a hundred and a half yojanas wide and long.
Verse 38 (padma.1.45.38)
वैहायसीं कामगमां पंचयोजनमुच्छ्रिताम्। जराशोकक्षमापेतां निष्प्रकम्प्यां शिवां सुखाम्
vaihāyasīṁ kāmagamāṁ paṁcayojanamucchritām jarāśokakṣamāpetāṁ niṣprakampyāṁ śivāṁ sukhām
It moved through the sky, going wherever wished, five yojanas high, free from old age and sorrow, unshakable, auspicious, and full of comfort.
Verse 39 (padma.1.45.39)
वेश्मासनवतीं रम्यां ज्वलंतीमिव तेजसा। अंतःसलिलसंयुक्तां विहितां विश्वकर्मणा
veśmāsanavatīṁ ramyāṁ jvalaṁtīmiva tejasā aṁtaḥsalilasaṁyuktāṁ vihitāṁ viśvakarmaṇā
Lovely with its chambers and seats, blazing as if with its own splendour, joined within with flowing water, and fashioned by Vishvakarma.
Verse 40 (padma.1.45.40)
दिव्यवर्णमयैर्वृक्षैः फलपुष्पप्रदैर्युताम्। नीलपीतासितश्यामैः श्वेतैर्लोहितकैरपि
divyavarṇamayairvṛkṣaiḥ phalapuṣpapradairyutām nīlapītāsitaśyāmaiḥ śvetairlohitakairapi
It was adorned with trees of divine hues bearing fruit and flowers — blue, yellow, dark, black, white, and red.
Verse 41 (padma.1.45.41)
अवदातैस्तथा गुल्मै रक्तमंजरिधारिभिः। सिताभ्रघनसंकाशां प्लवंतीं च ददर्श सः
avadātaistathā gulmai raktamaṁjaridhāribhiḥ sitābhraghanasaṁkāśāṁ plavaṁtīṁ ca dadarśa saḥ
and with bright shrubs bearing red blossom-clusters; he beheld it gleaming like a mass of white clouds, seeming to float.
Verse 42 (padma.1.45.42)
रश्मिमती स्वभावेन दिव्यगंधमनोरमा। सुसुखा न च दुःखा सा न शीता न च घर्मदा
raśmimatī svabhāvena divyagaṁdhamanoramā susukhā na ca duḥkhā sā na śītā na ca gharmadā
Radiant by its own nature, enchanting with divine fragrance, it was full of comfort and free from sorrow, neither cold nor causing heat.
Verse 43 (padma.1.45.43)
न क्षुत्पिपासे ग्लानिं वा प्राप्यतां प्राप्नुवंति ते। नानरूपैरुपकृता सुचित्रैश्च सुभास्वरैः
na kṣutpipāse glāniṁ vā prāpyatāṁ prāpnuvaṁti te nānarūpairupakṛtā sucitraiśca subhāsvaraiḥ
Those who reached it felt neither hunger, thirst, nor weariness; it was adorned with many wondrous and radiant forms.
Verse 44 (padma.1.45.44)
अतिचंद्रातिसूर्याति शिखिकान्ति स्वयंप्रभा। दीप्यते नाकपृष्ठस्था भासयंती विभासुरा
aticaṁdrātisūryāti śikhikānti svayaṁprabhā dīpyate nākapṛṣṭhasthā bhāsayaṁtī vibhāsurā
Surpassing the moon, surpassing the sun, surpassing the splendour of flame, self-luminous, it blazed even above the height of heaven, radiant and shining.
Verse 45 (padma.1.45.45)
सर्वे चकाशिरे तस्यां मुदिताश्चैव मानुषाः। रसवच्च प्रभूतं च भक्ष्यभोज्यान्नमुत्तमं
sarve cakāśire tasyāṁ muditāścaiva mānuṣāḥ rasavacca prabhūtaṁ ca bhakṣyabhojyānnamuttamaṁ
In it all the people shone forth, joyful, with abundant, delicious food and drink of the finest kind.
Verse 46 (padma.1.45.46)
पुण्यगंधास्रजश्चापि नित्यकालफला द्रुमाः। उष्णे शीतानि तोयानि शीते चोष्णानि संति वै
puṇyagaṁdhāsrajaścāpi nityakālaphalā drumāḥ uṣṇe śītāni toyāni śīte coṣṇāni saṁti vai
There were fragrant garlands, and trees ever bearing fruit; in the heat the waters were cool, and in the cold they were warm.
Verse 47 (padma.1.45.47)
पुष्पिताग्रान्महाशाखान्प्रवालांकुरधारिणः। लतावितानसंछन्नान्कल्पानैक्षिष्ठ स प्रभुः
puṣpitāgrānmahāśākhānpravālāṁkuradhāriṇaḥ latāvitānasaṁchannānkalpānaikṣiṣṭha sa prabhuḥ
The Lord beheld wish-fulfilling trees, flowering at their tips, with great branches bearing tender shoots, canopied over with creepers.
Verse 48 (padma.1.45.48)
गंधवंति च पुष्पाणि रसवंति फलानि च। तानि शीतानि चोष्णानि तत्रतत्र सरांसि च
gaṁdhavaṁti ca puṣpāṇi rasavaṁti phalāni ca tāni śītāni coṣṇāni tatratatra sarāṁsi ca
Fragrant were the flowers and flavourful the fruits; here and there were pools, some cool and some warm.
Verse 49 (padma.1.45.49)
अपश्यद्भूपतीर्थानि सभायां तस्य स प्रभुः। नलिनैः पुंडरीकैश्च शतपत्रैः सुगंधिभिः
apaśyadbhūpatīrthāni sabhāyāṁ tasya sa prabhuḥ nalinaiḥ puṁḍarīkaiśca śatapatraiḥ sugaṁdhibhiḥ
The Lord saw, in that assembly, sacred bathing-places filled with lotuses, white lotuses, and fragrant hundred-petalled blooms,
Verse 50 (padma.1.45.50)
रक्तैः कुवलयैश्चैव कल्हारैरुत्पलैस्तथा। नानाश्चर्यसमोपेतैः पुष्पैरन्यैश्च सुप्रियैः
raktaiḥ kuvalayaiścaiva kalhārairutpalaistathā nānāścaryasamopetaiḥ puṣpairanyaiśca supriyaiḥ
with red water-lilies, kalhara and utpala blossoms, and with other wondrous and beloved flowers.
Verse 51 (padma.1.45.51)
कारंडवैश्चक्रवाकैः सारसैः कुररैरपि। विमलस्फटिकाभानि पांडुरच्छदनैर्द्विजैः
kāraṁḍavaiścakravākaiḥ sārasaiḥ kurarairapi vimalasphaṭikābhāni pāṁḍuracchadanairdvijaiḥ

Chakora birds, peacocks, intoxicated cuckoos and mynahs flew down upon the great trees flowering and blossoming at their tips.

Red, yellow, and crimson birds perched at the tips of the trees; the jivajivaka birds gazed upon one another, overjoyed.

radiant like the sun, divine, spread with celestial coverings — the daitya Hiranyakashipu sat there, his earrings blazing.

उपचेरुर्महादैत्या हिरण्यकशिपुं तदा। दिव्यतालानि गीतानि जगुर्गंधर्वसत्तमाः

Great daityas then attended upon Hiranyakashipu, while the finest of gandharvas sang songs to divine rhythms.

Dashagriva, Vali, the great asura Meghavasa, Ghatabha, Vitarupa, Jvalana, and Indratapana.

दैत्यदानवसंघास्ते सर्वे ज्वलितकुंडलाः। स्रग्विणो वर्मिणः सर्वे सर्वे च चरितव्रताः
daityadānavasaṁghāste sarve jvalitakuṁḍalāḥ sragviṇo varmiṇaḥ sarve sarve ca caritavratāḥ
All those hosts of daityas and danavas had blazing earrings; all wore garlands and armour, and all had fulfilled their vows.

सर्वे लब्धवराः शूरास्सर्वे विहितमृत्यवः। एते चान्ये च बहवो हिरण्यकशिपुं प्रभुम्

All were heroes who had obtained boons, and all had had their deaths foreordained. These and many others attended upon Lord Hiranyakashipu,

उपासते महात्मानं सर्वे दिव्यपरिच्छदाः। विमानैर्विविधाकारैर्भ्राजमानैरिवाग्निभिः
upāsate mahātmānaṁ sarve divyaparicchadāḥ vimānairvividhākārairbhrājamānairivāgnibhiḥ
that great soul, all with divine retinues, in celestial chariots of various shapes, gleaming as if with fire.

महेन्द्रवपुषः सर्वे विचित्रांगदबाहवः। भूषितांगा दितेः पुत्रास्तमुपासत सर्वतः
mahendravapuṣaḥ sarve vicitrāṁgadabāhavaḥ bhūṣitāṁgā diteḥ putrāstamupāsata sarvataḥ
All with bodies like great Indra, their arms adorned with wondrous armlets, their bodies bejewelled — the sons of Diti attended upon him from every side.

ऐश्वर्यं दैत्यसिंहस्य यथा तस्य महात्मनः। न श्रुतं नैव दृष्टं च कस्यापि भुवनत्रये
aiśvaryaṁ daityasiṁhasya yathā tasya mahātmanaḥ na śrutaṁ naiva dṛṣṭaṁ ca kasyāpi bhuvanatraye
Such was the majesty of that lion among daityas, that great soul — the like of it had never been heard of, nor seen, by anyone in the three worlds.

रजतकनकचित्रवेदिकायां परिकृतरत्नविचित्रवीथिकायाम्। स ददर्श मृगाधिपः सभायां सुरुचिर जालगवाक्षशोभितायाम्
rajatakanakacitravedikāyāṁ parikṛtaratnavicitravīthikāyām sa dadarśa mṛgādhipaḥ sabhāyāṁ surucira jālagavākṣaśobhitāyām
On a dais bright with silver and gold, its walkway wondrously set with gems, that lord of beasts beheld the hall, adorned with lovely lattice-windows.

कनकवलयहारभूषितांगं दितितनयं स मृगाधिपो ददर्श। दिवसकरकरप्रभं ज्वलंतं दितिजसहस्रशतैर्निषेव्यमाणम्
kanakavalayahārabhūṣitāṁgaṁ dititanayaṁ sa mṛgādhipo dadarśa divasakarakaraprabhaṁ jvalaṁtaṁ ditijasahasraśatairniṣevyamāṇam
That lord of beasts saw the son of Diti, his body adorned with golden bracelets and necklaces, blazing with the radiance of the sun's rays, attended by hundreds of thousands of Daitya sons.

ततो दृष्ट्वा महाभागं कालचक्रमिवागतम्। नारसिंहवपुश्छन्नं भस्मच्छन्नमिवानलम्
tato dṛṣṭvā mahābhāgaṁ kālacakramivāgatam nārasiṁhavapuśchannaṁ bhasmacchannamivānalam
Then, having seen that greatly fortunate one who had come like the wheel of time itself, hidden in the Man-Lion form as fire is hidden beneath ash —

हिरण्यकशिपोः पुत्रः प्रह्लादो नाम वीर्यवान्। दिव्येन वपुषा सिंहमपश्यद्देवमागतम्
hiraṇyakaśipoḥ putraḥ prahlādo nāma vīryavān divyena vapuṣā siṁhamapaśyaddevamāgatam
Hiranyakashipu's son, the valorous Prahlada, saw the lion-god who had come in that divine form.

तं दृष्ट्वा रुक्मशैलाभमपूर्वां तनुमाश्रितम्। विस्मिता दानवाः सर्वे हिरण्यकशिपुश्च सः
taṁ dṛṣṭvā rukmaśailābhamapūrvāṁ tanumāśritam vismitā dānavāḥ sarve hiraṇyakaśipuśca saḥ
Seeing him, radiant like a mountain of gold, having assumed that unprecedented form, all the danavas were astonished, and so was Hiranyakashipu.

प्रह्लाद उवाच। महाराज महाबाहो दैत्यानामादिसंभव। न श्रुतं नैव मे दृष्टं नारसिंहमिदं वपुः
prahlāda uvāca mahārāja mahābāho daityānāmādisaṁbhava na śrutaṁ naiva me dṛṣṭaṁ nārasiṁhamidaṁ vapuḥ
Prahlada said: "O great king, mighty-armed one, first-born of the daityas, I have never heard of, nor seen, this Man-Lion form."

अव्यक्तं परमं दिव्यं किमिदं रूपमागतम्। दैत्यांतकरणं घोरं शंसतीव मनो मम
avyaktaṁ paramaṁ divyaṁ kimidaṁ rūpamāgatam daityāṁtakaraṇaṁ ghoraṁ śaṁsatīva mano mama
"Unmanifest, supreme, divine — what is this form that has come? My mind tells me it seems dreadful, one that will bring the end of the daityas."

अस्य देवाः शरीरस्थाः सागराः सरितस्तथा। हिमवान्पारियात्रश्च ये चान्ये कुलपर्वताः

"Within his body dwell the gods, the oceans and the rivers, the Himalayas, the Pariyatra, and the other great mountain-ranges,"

चंद्रमास्सहनक्षत्रैरादित्या रश्मिभिः सह। धनदो वरुणश्चैव यमः शक्रः शचीपतिः
caṁdramāssahanakṣatrairādityā raśmibhiḥ saha dhanado varuṇaścaiva yamaḥ śakraḥ śacīpatiḥ
"the moon together with the stars, the suns with their rays, Kubera the lord of wealth, Varuna, Yama, and Indra the lord of Shachi,"

मरुतो देवगंधर्वा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः। नागा यक्षाः पिशाचाश्च राक्षसा भीमविक्रमाः
maruto devagaṁdharvā ṛṣayaśca tapodhanāḥ nāgā yakṣāḥ piśācāśca rākṣasā bhīmavikramāḥ
"the Maruts, the divine gandharvas, and the sages rich in austerity, the nagas, yakshas, pishachas, and rakshasas of fearsome might,"

ब्रह्मा देवाः पशुपतिर्ललाटस्था भ्रमंति हि। स्थावराणि च सर्वाणि जंगमानि तथैव च
brahmā devāḥ paśupatirlalāṭasthā bhramaṁti hi sthāvarāṇi ca sarvāṇi jaṁgamāni tathaiva ca
"Brahma, the gods, and Pashupati dwell upon his forehead and move about there; and so do all things that are still and all that move."

भवांश्च सहितोस्माभिः सर्वैर्दैत्यगणैर्वृतः। विमानशतसंकीर्णा सर्वा या भवतः सभा
bhavāṁśca sahitosmābhiḥ sarvairdaityagaṇairvṛtaḥ vimānaśatasaṁkīrṇā sarvā yā bhavataḥ sabhā
"You too, together with all of us, surrounded by all the hosts of daityas, and this whole assembly hall of yours, crowded with hundreds of chariots —"

सर्वं त्रिभुवनं राजन्लोकधर्मश्च शाश्वतः। दृश्यते नरसिंहेस्मिंस्तथेदं निखिलं जगत्
sarvaṁ tribhuvanaṁ rājanlokadharmaśca śāśvataḥ dṛśyate narasiṁhesmiṁstathedaṁ nikhilaṁ jagat
"the entire three worlds, O king, and the eternal order of the worlds — all this, and the whole universe besides, is seen within this Narasimha."

प्रजापतिश्चात्र मनुर्महात्मा ग्रहाश्च योगाश्च मही नभश्च। उत्पातकालश्च धृतिर्मतिश्च रतिश्च सत्यं च तपो दमश्च

"Prajapati is here, and the great-souled Manu, the planets and their conjunctions, the earth and the sky, the season of portents, steadfastness, intellect, delight, truth, austerity, and self-control,"

सनत्कुमारश्च महानुभावो विश्वे च देवा ॠषयश्च सर्वे। क्रोधश्च कामश्च तथैव हर्षो दर्पश्च मोहः पितरश्च सर्वे
sanatkumāraśca mahānubhāvo viśve ca devā ṝṣayaśca sarve krodhaśca kāmaśca tathaiva harṣo darpaśca mohaḥ pitaraśca sarve
"the illustrious Sanatkumara, the Vishvedevas and all the sages, anger and desire, joy and pride, delusion, and all the ancestors."

प्रह्लादस्य वचः श्रुत्वा हिरण्यकशिपुः प्रभुः। उवाच दानवान्सर्वान्गणांश्च सगणाधिपः

mṛgeṁdro gṛhyatāmeṣa apūrvāṁ tanumāsthitaḥ yadi vā saṁśayaḥ kaścidvadhyatāṁ vanagocaraḥ
"'Seize this lord of beasts, who has taken on this unprecedented form; or, if there is any doubt, let this forest-dweller simply be slain.'"

ते दानवगणास्सर्वे मृगेंद्रं भीमविक्रमम्। परिक्षिपंतो मुदितास्त्रासयामासुरोजसा
te dānavagaṇāssarve mṛgeṁdraṁ bhīmavikramam parikṣipaṁto muditāstrāsayāmāsurojasā
All those hosts of danavas, joyfully surrounding the lord of beasts of terrible might, tried with all their strength to frighten him.

सिंहनादं विमुच्याथ नरसिंहो महाबलः। बभंज तां सभां सर्वां व्यादितास्य इवांतकः
siṁhanādaṁ vimucyātha narasiṁho mahābalaḥ babhaṁja tāṁ sabhāṁ sarvāṁ vyāditāsya ivāṁtakaḥ
Then the mighty Narasimha, letting out a lion's roar, shattered that entire assembly, like Death himself with gaping jaws.

सभायां भज्यमानायां हिरण्यकशिपुः स्वयम्। चिक्षेपास्त्राणि सिंहस्य रोषव्याकुललोचनः
sabhāyāṁ bhajyamānāyāṁ hiraṇyakaśipuḥ svayam cikṣepāstrāṇi siṁhasya roṣavyākulalocanaḥ
As the hall was being shattered, Hiranyakashipu himself, his eyes wild with rage, hurled his weapons at the lion.

सर्वास्त्राणामथ श्रेष्ठं दंडमस्त्रं सुदारुणम्। कालचक्रं तथा घोरं विष्णुचक्रं तथापरं

ityevaṁ kṣubhitāḥ sapta maruto gaganecarāḥ ye grahāssarvalokasya kṣaye prādurbhavaṁti hi
thus the seven sky-roaming winds were agitated — the very ones that appear only at the destruction of all the worlds.

ते सर्वे गगने हृष्टाव्यचरंश्च यथासुखम्। अयोगतश्चाप्यचरद्योगं निशि निशाचरः
te sarve gagane hṛṣṭāvyacaraṁśca yathāsukham ayogataścāpyacaradyogaṁ niśi niśācaraḥ
All of them roamed joyfully through the sky as they pleased; and out of its proper course, the moon moved through conjunction at night.

सग्रहः सह नक्षत्रैस्तारापतिररिंदम। विवर्णतां च भगवान्गतो दिवि दिवाकरः
sagrahaḥ saha nakṣatraistārāpatirariṁdama vivarṇatāṁ ca bhagavāngato divi divākaraḥ
O subduer of foes, the lord of the stars, together with the planets and constellations, and the divine sun in the sky, turned pale and colourless.

कृष्णः कबंधश्च तदा लक्ष्यते सुमहान्दिवि। असृजच्चासितां सूर्यो धूमवत्तां विभावसुः
kṛṣṇaḥ kabaṁdhaśca tadā lakṣyate sumahāndivi asṛjaccāsitāṁ sūryo dhūmavattāṁ vibhāvasuḥ
Then a vast black headless trunk was seen in the sky, and the sun put forth a dark, smoky hue.

गगनस्थश्च भगवानभीक्ष्णं परिविष्यते। सप्तधूमनिभा घोराः सूर्यादि विसमुत्थिताः
gaganasthaśca bhagavānabhīkṣṇaṁ pariviṣyate saptadhūmanibhā ghorāḥ sūryādi visamutthitāḥ
The divine sun, standing in the sky, was repeatedly encircled by a halo; terrible smoke-like rings, seven in number, rose up around the sun and other bodies.

सोमस्य गगनस्थस्य ग्रहास्तिष्ठंति शृंङ्गगाः। वामे च दक्षिणे चैव स्थितौ शुक्रबृहस्पती
somasya gaganasthasya grahāstiṣṭhaṁti śṛṁṅgagāḥ vāme ca dakṣiṇe caiva sthitau śukrabṛhaspatī
Planets stood at the very horns of the moon in the sky; Venus and Jupiter stood, one on the left and one on the right.

शनैश्चरो लोहितांगो लोहितांगसमद्युतिः। समं समधिरोहंत सर्वे वै गगनेचराः
śanaiścaro lohitāṁgo lohitāṁgasamadyutiḥ samaṁ samadhirohaṁta sarve vai gaganecarāḥ
Saturn, and Mars of ruddy limbs and equal ruddy splendour — all the sky-wanderers rose together, side by side.

शृंगाणि शनकैर्घोरा युगांता वर्त्तन ग्रहाः। चंद्रमाश्च सनक्षत्रो ग्रहैः सह तमोनुदः

took no delight in Rohini, as if for the destruction of all moving and unmoving beings; the moon, seized by Rahu, was struck again and again by meteors.

उल्काः प्रज्वलिताश्चंद्रे व्यचरंत यथासुखम्। देवानामधिपो देवः सोप्यवर्षत शोणितम्
ulkāḥ prajvalitāścaṁdre vyacaraṁta yathāsukham devānāmadhipo devaḥ sopyavarṣata śoṇitam
Blazing meteors moved freely about the moon as they pleased; and even the divine lord of the gods rained down blood.

अपतद्गगनादुल्का विद्युद्रूपा महास्वना। अकाले च द्रुमास्सर्वे पुष्प्यंति च फलंति च
apatadgaganādulkā vidyudrūpā mahāsvanā akāle ca drumāssarve puṣpyaṁti ca phalaṁti ca
A meteor, shaped like lightning and roaring loudly, fell from the sky; and all the trees, out of season, both flowered and bore fruit.

लताश्च सफलाः सर्वा या आहुर्दैत्यनाशिकाः। फले फलान्यजायंत पुष्पे पुष्पं तथैव च
latāśca saphalāḥ sarvā yā āhurdaityanāśikāḥ phale phalānyajāyaṁta puṣpe puṣpaṁ tathaiva ca
All the creepers bore fruit — omens said to portend the destruction of the daityas; fruits grew within fruits, and flowers within flowers likewise.

Srughna, the Mallas, Videha, Malava, Kashi and Kosala, and even the dwelling of Vainateya (Garuda) — all were made to tremble by that lord of the daityas,

कैलासशिखराकारं यत्कृतं विश्वकर्मणा। रत्नतोयो महाभीमो लौहित्यो नाम सागरः

that dwelling shaped like the peak of Kailasa, fashioned by Vishvakarma; and the vast and fearsome sea named Lauhitya, with its jewel-bright waters,

and famed Ayomukha, adorned on every side with mineral ores; and the auspicious Malaya mountain, fragrant with tamala forests,

Saurashtra together with Bahlika, and likewise Shudra and Abhira lands, the Bhojas, Pandyas, and Vangas, Kalinga and Tamralipta,

तथैव पौंड्राः शुभ्राश्च वामचूडास्सकेरलाः। क्षोभितास्तेन दैत्येन देवाश्चाप्सरसां गणाः
tathaiva pauṁḍrāḥ śubhrāśca vāmacūḍāssakeralāḥ kṣobhitāstena daityena devāścāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ
and likewise the Paundras, the fair-skinned peoples, the Vamachudas and the Keralas — all were shaken by that daitya, and so were the gods and hosts of apsaras.

अगस्त्यभवनं चैव यदगस्त्यकृतं पुरा। सिद्धचारणसंघैश्च विप्रकीर्णं मनोहरम्
agastyabhavanaṁ caiva yadagastyakṛtaṁ purā siddhacāraṇasaṁghaiśca viprakīrṇaṁ manoharam
and the abode of Agastya, which Agastya himself made long ago, delightful, thronged with hosts of siddhas and charanas,

filled with birds of many wondrous kinds, with great flowering trees, its golden peaks attended by hosts of apsaras,

and the mountain Pushpitaka, glorious and lovely to behold, risen up having cleft the ocean, a resting place for the sun and moon,

it shone with its great peaks as if scratching the sky, its peaks, gleaming like the rays of sun and moon, wrapped round with the ocean's waters,

and the glorious mountain Vidyutvan, extending a hundred yojanas, upon whose peak the flashes of lightning fall,

and the city named Vimala, unassailable, the Malati city of the serpents, and Bhogavati too — all were made to tremble by that lord of the daityas,

and Mount Mahasena, and the Pariyatra mountain, the excellent mountain Chakravan, and Mount Varaha,

and the auspicious city of Pragjyotisha, made of gold, in which dwelt the evil-souled danava named Naraka,

meghaśca parvataśreṣṭho meghagaṁbhīranissvanaḥ ṣaṣṭistatra sahasrāṇi parvatānāṁ viśāṁpate
and the excellent mountain Megha, resounding deeply like thunder-clouds — sixty thousand mountains were there, O lord of the people,

तरुणादित्यसंकाशो मेरुश्चैव महान्गिरिः। यक्षराक्षसगंधर्वैर्नित्यं सेवितकंदरः
taruṇādityasaṁkāśo meruścaiva mahāngiriḥ yakṣarākṣasagaṁdharvairnityaṁ sevitakaṁdaraḥ
and the great mountain Meru, radiant like the young rising sun, whose caverns are ever frequented by yakshas, rakshasas, and gandharvas,

हेमगर्भो महासेनस्तथा मेघसखो गिरिः। कैलासश्चैव शैलेंद्रो दानवेंद्रेण कंपितः

Hemagarbha, Mahasena, and likewise Mount Meghasakha, and Kailasa, the lord of mountains — all were shaken by that lord of the danavas,

हेमपुष्करसञ्छन्नं तेन वैखानसं सरः। कंपितं मानसं चैव हंसकारंडवाकुलम्
hemapuṣkarasañchannaṁ tena vaikhānasaṁ saraḥ kaṁpitaṁ mānasaṁ caiva haṁsakāraṁḍavākulam
and Lake Vaikhanasa, covered over with golden lotuses, and Lake Manasa too, thronging with swans and karandava ducks, were made to tremble;

त्रिशृंगः पर्वतश्रेष्ठः कुमारी च सरिद्वरा। तुषारचयसंच्छन्नो मंदरश्चापि पर्वतः
triśṛṁgaḥ parvataśreṣṭhaḥ kumārī ca saridvarā tuṣāracayasaṁcchanno maṁdaraścāpi parvataḥ
the excellent mountain Trishringa, and the river Kumari, best of rivers, and Mount Mandara too, covered with heaps of snow,

उशीरबीजश्च गिरिर्भद्रप्रस्थस्तथाद्रिराट्। प्रजापतिगिरिश्चैव तथा पुष्करपर्वतः

and the mountain Ushirabija, and Bhadraprastha, and the king of mountains, and Mount Prajapati, and likewise Mount Pushkara,

देवाभः पर्वतश्चैव तथा वै वालुकागिरिः। क्रौंचः सप्तर्षिशैलश्च धूम्रवर्णश्च पर्वतः

and Mount Devabha, and Mount Valuka too, Mount Kraunca, the mountain of the Seven Sages, and Mount Dhumravarna —

एते चान्ये च गिरयो देशा जनपदास्तथा। नद्यः ससागराः सर्वाः दानवेनाभिकंपिताः
ete cānye ca girayo deśā janapadāstathā nadyaḥ sasāgarāḥ sarvāḥ dānavenābhikaṁpitāḥ
these and other mountains, lands and regions, all the rivers together with the oceans, were made to tremble by that danava.

कपिलश्च महीपुत्रो व्याघ्रवांश्च प्रकंपितः। खेचराश्च निशापुत्राः पातालतलवासिनः
kapilaśca mahīputro vyāghravāṁśca prakaṁpitaḥ khecarāśca niśāputrāḥ pātālatalavāsinaḥ
Kapila, the son of the Earth, and Vyaghravan too, were shaken; and the sky-goers, the sons of Night, and the dwellers of Patala's depths,
Verse 183 (padma.1.45.183)
गणस्तथापरो रौद्रो मेघनामांकुशायुधः। ऊर्द्ध्वगो भीमवेगश्च सर्व एतेभिकंपिताः
gaṇastathāparo raudro meghanāmāṁkuśāyudhaḥ ūrddhvago bhīmavegaśca sarva etebhikaṁpitāḥ
and another dreadful troop, named Megha, armed with goads, moving upward with terrible speed — all these too were shaken.

गदी शूली करालश्च हिरण्यकशिपुस्तथा। जीमूतघननिर्घोषो जीमूत इव वेगवान्
gadī śūlī karālaśca hiraṇyakaśipustathā jīmūtaghananirghoṣo jīmūta iva vegavān
Then Hiranyakashipu, mace in hand, trident-bearing, and terrible, roaring like a dense thundercloud, swift as a storm-cloud,

that arrogant enemy of the gods, the son of Diti, rushed upon Narasimha; but he, that lord of beasts with sharp, mighty claws,

तदोंकारसहायेन विदार्य निहतो युधि। मही च कालश्च शशीनभश्च ग्रहास्स सूर्याश्च दिशश्च सर्वाः
tadoṁkārasahāyena vidārya nihato yudhi mahī ca kālaśca śaśīnabhaśca grahāssa sūryāśca diśaśca sarvāḥ
was torn open with the sacred syllable Om as his aid, and slain in battle. The earth and time, the moon and sky, the planets, the sun, and all the directions,

नद्यश्च शैलाश्च महार्णवाश्च गताः प्रसादं दितिपुत्रनाशात्। ततः प्रमुदिता देवा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः
nadyaśca śailāśca mahārṇavāśca gatāḥ prasādaṁ ditiputranāśāt tataḥ pramuditā devā ṛṣayaśca tapodhanāḥ
the rivers, the mountains, and the great oceans, all attained peace at the destruction of the son of Diti. Then the gods and the sages rich in austerity, filled with joy,

तुष्टुवुर्नामभिर्दिव्यैरादिदेवं सनातनम्। यत्त्वया विधृतं देव नारसिंहमिदं वपुः
tuṣṭuvurnāmabhirdivyairādidevaṁ sanātanam yattvayā vidhṛtaṁ deva nārasiṁhamidaṁ vapuḥ
praised the eternal primal god with divine names: 'This Man-Lion form, O god, which you have assumed —'

एतदेवार्चयिष्यंति परापरविदो जनाः। ब्रह्मोवाच। भवान्ब्रह्मा च रुद्रश्च महेंद्रो देवसत्तमः
etadevārcayiṣyaṁti parāparavido janāḥ brahmovāca bhavānbrahmā ca rudraśca maheṁdro devasattamaḥ
'— this very form shall people who know the higher and the lower worship.' Brahma said: 'You are Brahma, and Rudra, and great Indra, O best of gods,'

भवान्कर्त्ता विकर्त्ता च लोकानां प्रभवोऽव्ययः। परां च सिद्धिं च परं च सत्वं परं रहस्यं परमं हविश्च
bhavānkarttā vikarttā ca lokānāṁ prabhavo'vyayaḥ parāṁ ca siddhiṁ ca paraṁ ca satvaṁ paraṁ rahasyaṁ paramaṁ haviśca
'you are the maker and the unmaker of the worlds, their imperishable source; you are the supreme attainment, the supreme being, the supreme mystery, and the supreme oblation,'

परं च धर्मं परमं यशश्च त्वामाहुरग्र्यं परमं पुराणम्। परं च सत्यं परमं तपश्च परं पवित्रं परमं च मार्गं
paraṁ ca dharmaṁ paramaṁ yaśaśca tvāmāhuragryaṁ paramaṁ purāṇam paraṁ ca satyaṁ paramaṁ tapaśca paraṁ pavitraṁ paramaṁ ca mārgaṁ
'they call you the supreme dharma and the supreme glory, the foremost and supreme Purana; the supreme truth and the supreme austerity, the supreme purity and the supreme path,'

परं च यज्ञं परमं च होत्रं त्वामाहुरग्य्रं परमं पुराणम्। परं शरीरं परमं च ब्रह्म परं च योगं परमां च वाणीम्
paraṁ ca yajñaṁ paramaṁ ca hotraṁ tvāmāhuragyraṁ paramaṁ purāṇam paraṁ śarīraṁ paramaṁ ca brahma paraṁ ca yogaṁ paramāṁ ca vāṇīm
'they call you the supreme sacrifice and the supreme oblation, the foremost and supreme Purana; the supreme body, and supreme Brahman, the supreme yoga, and the supreme speech,'

परं रहस्यं परमां गतिं च त्वामाहुरग्य्रं परमं पुराणम्। एवमुक्त्वा तु भगवान्सर्वलोकपितामहः
paraṁ rahasyaṁ paramāṁ gatiṁ ca tvāmāhuragyraṁ paramaṁ purāṇam evamuktvā tu bhagavānsarvalokapitāmahaḥ
'the supreme mystery, and the supreme goal — they call you the foremost and supreme Purana.' Having spoken thus, the Lord, grandsire of all the worlds,

स्तुत्वा नारायणं देवं ब्रह्मलोकं गतः प्रभुः। ततो नदत्सु तूर्येषु नृत्यंतीष्वप्सरःसु च
stutvā nārāyaṇaṁ devaṁ brahmalokaṁ gataḥ prabhuḥ tato nadatsu tūryeṣu nṛtyaṁtīṣvapsaraḥsu ca
having praised the god Narayana, the Lord returned to the world of Brahma. Then, as trumpets sounded and the apsaras danced,

क्षीरोदस्योत्तरं कूलं जगाम हरिरीश्वरः। नारसिंहं वपुर्देवः स्थापयित्वा सुदीप्तिमान्

Hari, the Lord, went to the northern shore of the Ocean of Milk; and the resplendent god, having set aside his Man-Lion form,

पौराणं रूपमास्थाय प्रययौ गरडध्वजः। अष्टचक्रेण यानेन भूतियुक्तेन भास्वता
paurāṇaṁ rūpamāsthāya prayayau garaḍadhvajaḥ aṣṭacakreṇa yānena bhūtiyuktena bhāsvatā
assumed his ancient, familiar form, and departed, bearing the banner of Garuda, in his radiant, glory-laden chariot of eight wheels.

अव्यक्तप्रकृतिर्देवः स्वस्थानं गतवान्प्रभुः
avyaktaprakṛtirdevaḥ svasthānaṁ gatavānprabhuḥ
The god whose nature is unmanifest, the Lord, went to his own abode.
