Verse 6 (padma.1.46.6)
yadyeṣā na bhavedbhāryā jīvite kiṁ prayojanam etāṁ matimathāsthāya maṁtribhiḥ saha maṁtrya ca

tataḥ kopaparītātmā hanmi devānsaśaṁkarān taṁ hatvā dānavaṁ śakro bhayādaṁdhāsurasya ca
Then, overcome by rage, he said: "I shall slay the gods, Shankara included." Having slain that danava, Indra, out of fear of the demon Andhaka,
Verse 11 (padma.1.46.11)
jagāma śaraṇānveṣī kailāsaṁ śaṁkarālayaṁ dṛṣṭvā praṇamya deveśaṁ caṁdrārddhakṛtaśekharaṁ

Verse 12 (padma.1.46.12)
bhīto vijñāpayāmāsa dhṛtasāhasralocanaḥ abhayaṁ dehi me deva dānavādaṁdhakādahaṁ
Thousand-eyed Indra, frightened, made this plea: "Grant me freedom from fear, O god — I am afraid of the danava Andhaka."
Verse 13 (padma.1.46.13)

Verse 14 (padma.1.46.14)
tāvattatrastha evāśu hanyatāṁ madbhayāvahaḥ strīlaulyāddānavaḥ krūraḥ parabhāryāpahārakaḥ

Verse 15 (padma.1.46.15)
sarvathā ghātanīyaste bhavatā surasattama śakrasyaivaṁ vacaḥ śrutvā śaraṇyaḥ śaṁkarastadā
"he must by all means be slain by you, O best of gods." Having heard Indra's words thus, Shankara, the giver of refuge,
Verse 16 (padma.1.46.16)
dadāvabhayamevāsau mā bhairiti śatakratoḥ dattābhayotha kailāsādājagāma kuśasthalīm
granted him freedom from fear, saying to Indra of a hundred sacrifices, "Do not fear." Having granted this refuge, he then went from Kailasa to Kushasthali,

the Lord, surrounded by his hosts of ghosts, in order to slay Andhaka, having assumed a form of vast body, a universal form, most terrifying,
Verse 18 (padma.1.46.18)

dahannatīvatejobhiḥ kālāgniriva saṁkṣaye mukhairdaṁṣṭrāṁkurāṁkaiśca dvitīyendukalojjvalaiḥ
burning with intense splendour like the fire of dissolution at the end of time, with faces marked by fangs sprouting like tender shoots, blazing like a second crescent moon,
Verse 20 (padma.1.46.20)

richly adorned with many ornaments, roaring terribly in battle; clad in a lion's skin, with a tiger-skin as his upper garment,
Verse 22 (padma.1.46.22)
gajājinakṛtāṭopaṁ patadbhṛṁgaravākulaṁ īdṛgrūpaṁ vidhāyeśo danudaityabhayāvahaṁ
resplendent with an elephant-hide, thronging with the buzzing of falling bees — having assumed such a form, terrifying to the daityas of Danu, the Lord
Verse 23 (padma.1.46.23)
avātaranmahīṁ bhīmo danūnāṁ kṣayakārakaḥ aṁdhāsuropi danujaḥ putraṁ śrutvā hataṁ yudhi
descended, terrible, to the earth, the destroyer of the race of Danu. Andhakasura too, the son of Danu, hearing that his son had been slain in battle,
Verse 24 (padma.1.46.24)
krodhena tamasāviṣṭo raṇatūryāṇyacodayat saṁhatyāvahitaḥ prāpto yatra te tridaśāḥ sthitāḥ
was possessed by the darkness of rage, and had the war-drums sounded. Gathering his forces with care, he arrived where those gods were stationed,
Verse 25 (padma.1.46.25)
mahatyā senayā sārddhaṁ rathavāraṇayuktayā te devā dānavānvīkṣya mahāhavakṛtādarān
together with a great army equipped with chariots and elephants. The gods, seeing the danavas eager for the great battle,
Verse 26 (padma.1.46.26)
vyapayātatanutrāṇāḥ śaṁbhuṁ śaraṇamanvayuḥ mā bhairiti ca tāndevo devānuktvā trilocanaḥ
their armour cast off in flight, went for refuge to Shambhu. And the three-eyed god, saying to those gods, "Do not fear,"
Verse 27 (padma.1.46.27)
gṛhītvā śūlamātiṣṭhaddaṁṣṭrāravadharo ruṣā aṁdhakenātha ruṣṭena śatakoṭiśarairgaṇāḥ
took up his trident and stood ready, his fangs bared in fury. Then the enraged Andhaka, with a hundred crore arrows,
Verse 28 (padma.1.46.28)
nihatāścāpi devānāṁ bahūnāmekatākṛtāṁ sasphuliṁgārciṣo vahnermuṁcamānaḥ pinākadhṛk
struck down many hosts of the gods, gathered together as one. The wielder of the Pinaka, loosing flames sparking with fire,
Verse 29 (padma.1.46.29)
śaraiḥ samāvṛtaṁ cakre aṁdhakaṁ rathagaṁ tataḥ danunātho rathasthotha śithilaḥ śithilāyudhaḥ
then enveloped Andhaka, seated in his chariot, with arrows. The lord of the Danavas, seated in his chariot, then grew weary, his weapons growing slack,
Verse 30 (padma.1.46.30)
nimaṁtrya dānavānsarvānsa yoddhumupacakrame bahudhā tadbalaṁ bhagnaṁ vividhāyudhayodhibhiḥ
and, summoning all the danavas, he set about to fight anew. That army was broken again and again by warriors wielding various weapons,
Verse 31 (padma.1.46.31)
yudhi vīrairhataṁ devaiḥ sthāṇunā sakhyamāśritaiḥ dānavaścāṁdhakaḥ sainyaṁ bhinnaṁ dṛṣṭvā kṛtaṁ suraiḥ
slain in battle by the heroic gods who had taken refuge in friendship with Sthanu. And the danava Andhaka, seeing his army shattered by the gods,
Verse 32 (padma.1.46.32)
ātmānaṁ ca maheśena niruddhaṁ bāṇakoṭibhiḥ vihvalībhūtadehosau dhairyamālaṁbya kevalam
and himself hemmed in by Maheshvara with crores of arrows, his body overcome with distress, yet clinging solely to his courage,
Verse 33 (padma.1.46.33)
pinākaṁ caiva rudrasya gṛhya rudramatāḍayat pinākasyābhighātena rudro bhūmimathāgamat
seized Rudra's own Pinaka bow and struck Rudra with it. By the blow of the Pinaka, Rudra then fell to the ground.
Verse 34 (padma.1.46.34)
bhūmau nipātite deve calitaṁ bhuvanatrayaṁ tatyajuḥ sāgarā velāṁ parvatāḥ śikharāṇi ca
When the god fell to the ground, the three worlds shook; the oceans abandoned their shores, and the mountains their peaks,
Verse 35 (padma.1.46.35)
nakṣatrāṇi viyogīni jagmurmuktānyanekaśaḥ patite bhuvi deveśe aṁdhako gadayā punaḥ
the stars, torn loose, wandered free of their positions in many numbers. When the lord of gods had fallen to the earth, Andhaka once more, with his mace,
Verse 36 (padma.1.46.36)
jaghāna ruṣito nāgaṁ hatvā taṁ pātayadbhuvi śivaṁ tyaktvā nāgarājaḥ prapalāyyānyato gataḥ
struck, in his fury, at the serpent, and having struck it, felled it to the ground. Abandoning Shiva, the king of serpents fled away elsewhere.
Verse 37 (padma.1.46.37)
muhūrttāccetanāṁ labdhvā utthitaḥ parameśvaraḥ gṛhītvā paraśuṁ divyaṁ dānavaṁ naiva paśyati
After a moment, regaining consciousness, the Supreme Lord rose up; taking up his divine axe, he could not see the danava anywhere.
Verse 38 (padma.1.46.38)
kṛtvā tu tāmasīṁ māyāṁ māyāśataviśāradaḥ tayā vimohite deve kva nu vai dānavo gataḥ
For he, skilled in a hundred illusions, had cast a magic darkness; and with the god thus bewildered by it — where indeed had the danava gone?
Verse 39 (padma.1.46.39)
śaṁbhorbhayamatho prāpya kiṁ nu pāpaḥ kariṣyati tamasā chāditā yāvaddevā vyākulatāṁ gatāḥ
Having incurred Shambhu's wrath, what indeed would that sinner do now? As long as they were covered by darkness, the gods fell into confusion,
Verse 40 (padma.1.46.40)
saṁbhrāṁtamānasānīkāstadocuḥ kāryagauravāt etasminnaṁtare sūryastejorūpo vyavasthitaḥ
their hosts' minds bewildered, and then, because of the gravity of the matter, they spoke. Meanwhile, the sun, whose very form is light, stood ready.
Verse 41 (padma.1.46.41)
uttasthau nararūpeṇa kurvanvitimirā diśaḥ naṣṭe tamasi hṛṣṭāṅge khadyote prakaṭe sthite
He rose up in human form, making the directions free of darkness. When the darkness was destroyed and the sun stood revealed, gladdening all bodies,
Verse 42 (padma.1.46.42)
devā mudamavāpuste spaṣṭānanavilocanāḥ uddīptāstu surāḥ sarve gaṇāḥ skaṁdapurogamāḥ
the gods, their faces and eyes now clear, felt joy. All the gods and hosts, with Skanda at their head, grew radiant,
Verse 43 (padma.1.46.43)
stuvaṁti vividhaistotraiḥ nararūpaṁ divākaram anaupamyaṁ jagadvyāpi brahmaviṣṇuśivātparam
and praised, with various hymns, the sun who had taken human form — incomparable, pervading the universe, higher than Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
Verse 44 (padma.1.46.44)
snigdhavidrumasacchāyaṁ siṁdūrāruṇasaprabham prabhāsaṁtaṁ tadā dṛṣṭvā paṁcāṁgāliṁgitāvaniḥ
Seeing him then shining, with the glossy hue of coral, radiant red like vermilion, [Shiva,] embracing the earth with his five limbs,
Verse 45 (padma.1.46.45)
punaḥ praṇāmapravaṇaṁ praṇidhānapuraḥsaram ālokya snigdhayā dṛṣṭyā devadevaṁ trilocanaḥ
bowed low again in reverent salutation. And the three-eyed god, gazing upon the god of gods with an affectionate glance,
Verse 46 (padma.1.46.46)
uvāca snigdhagaṁbhīra vācā devaṁ śanairharaḥ pūrayanniva tejobhirbhagavānbhuvanatrayam
Hara spoke to the god slowly, in a voice deep and tender, the Lord as if filling the three worlds with his splendour:
Verse 47 (padma.1.46.47)
daityamāyābhipannānāṁ darśanākulacetasām prāṇināmidamevaikamavisaṁvādi daivatam
"For creatures overcome by the illusions of the daityas, their minds bewildered in perception, this alone is the one unfailing deity,"
Verse 48 (padma.1.46.48)
ayameva ca saṁsārasāgarātsakalādapi sattvānuttārayandevaḥ karṇadhārāya te prabhuḥ
"this god alone, the Lord, who ferries beings across the entire ocean of samsara, is your very helmsman —"
Verse 49 (padma.1.46.49)
yajaṁto jaṁtavo bhaktyā yaṁ devaṁ vividhāḥ sadā niḥśreyasāya kalpaṁte taṁ nato bhāskaraṁ vibhum
"to whom various creatures, worshipping always with devotion, become fit for the highest good — to that mighty Bhaskara I bow."
Verse 50 (padma.1.46.50)
yastūdayādriśikhare makuṭāyamānalīlāgabhastibhiralaṁ kusumaprakāśaiḥ vyāpya svadīdhitigaṇaiḥ pradiśo diśaśca dedīpyate sa savitā vibhavāya loke
He who, at the peak of the Udaya mountain, with rays sportive as a crown, radiant like flowers, pervading all the quarters with his multitude of beams, blazes forth — that Sun shines for the glory of the world.
Verse 51 (padma.1.46.51)
brahmeṁdrarudramarudacyutavahnipātho nātha prayoganipuṇaiśca ṛṣīṁdrasaṁghaiḥ śreyorthibhiḥ pratidinaṁ divasāṁgarāgairdivyāṁgarāgaparilipta samastadaihaiḥ
O Lord worshipped by Brahma, Indra, Rudra, the Maruts, Vishnu, Agni, and Varuna, and by hosts of the greatest sages skilled in ritual practice, who, seeking their own welfare, daily anoint their whole bodies with celestial paste,
Verse 52 (padma.1.46.52)

Your form is ever worthy of worship, even at the dissolution of the world, by the Vedas, with hymns adorned with wondrous and manifold words. Those who praise you, though homeless, dwell in the supreme abode; and they become ever open-handed upon this earth.
Verse 53 (padma.1.46.53)
ye dadrukuṣṭhapiṭikādibhirarditāṁgāḥ śīrṇatvacaḥ kunakhinaścyutakeśanāśāḥ deveśa tepi tavapādanatā bhavaṁti sadyo dviraṣṭaśaradākṛtayo manuṣyāḥ
Those whose limbs are afflicted by ringworm, leprosy, boils, and the like, whose skin is withered, whose nails are diseased, whose hair has fallen out — O lord of gods, even they, bowing at your feet, at once become men with the fresh form of sixteen years.
Verse 54 (padma.1.46.54)

The hosts of Samaveda chanters call you 'Sama' for the sake of sacrifice; the Adhvaryu priests and the chief companies of Rigvedic reciters call you 'Rik'; those skilled in ritual seek to approach you as 'Arya'; the Nagas and the ancestors know you as the bearer of every fragrance.
Verse 55 (padma.1.46.55)
māyeti copaniṣadarkaṣaḍeva devā martyāstathā vayamiveha upāsate'mī gaṁdharvakinnaragaṇāḥ sahacāraṇaistu rūpaṁ tathā ca bhagavanpratipadyase tvam
The Upanishads call you 'Maya'; the six classes of gods, and mortals too, worship you here as we do; the hosts of gandharvas and kinnaras, together with the charanas — and thus, O Lord, you take on form for each.
Verse 56 (padma.1.46.56)

that person attains Brahman-hood; we are unable to describe the fruit of it. Hear, my son, what the deity of each syllable is — I shall tell you:
Verse 163 (padma.1.46.163)
yajjaptvā ca punarmātustanaṁ na pibati dvijaḥ āgneyaṁ prathamaṁ jñeyaṁ vāyavyaṁ tu dvitīyakam
having recited which, a twice-born never again drinks his mother's milk (i.e. is never reborn). The first syllable is to be known as belonging to Agni, the second to Vayu,
Verse 164 (padma.1.46.164)

Verse 165 (padma.1.46.165)

mārutaṁ paṁcadaśakaṁ saumyaṁ ṣoḍaśakaṁ smṛtaṁ āṁgirasaṁ saptadaśaṁ vaiśvadevamataḥ paraṁ
the fifteenth belongs to the Maruts, the sixteenth is remembered as Soma's, the seventeenth belongs to Angiras, and the next after that to the Vishvedevas,
Verse 168 (padma.1.46.168)
āśvinaṁ caikonaviṁśaṁ prājāpatyaṁ tu viṁśakaṁ sarvadevamayaṁ jñeyamekaviṁśakamakṣaraṁ
the nineteenth belongs to the Ashvins, and the twentieth to Prajapati; the twenty-first syllable is to be known as consisting of all the gods,
Verse 169 (padma.1.46.169)
raudraṁ dvāviṁśakaṁ jñeyaṁ brāhmaṁ jñeyamataḥ paraṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ tu caturviṁśametā akṣaradevatāḥ
the twenty-second is to be known as Rudra's, the next after is to be known as Brahma's, and the twenty-fourth as Vishnu's — these are the deities of the syllables.
Verse 170 (padma.1.46.170)
japakāle tu saṁciṁtya tāsu sāyujyatāṁ vrajet jñātvā tu devatāstasya vāṅmayaṁ viditaṁ bhavet
Meditating upon them at the time of recitation, one attains union with them. And having known its deities, its verbal essence becomes fully known.
Verse 171 (padma.1.46.171)
sarvapāpavinirmukto brahmaṇaḥ padavīṁ vrajet gāyatrīṁ vinyasetpūrvaṁ śarīre cātmano budhaḥ
Freed from all sin, one attains the state of Brahma. First, the wise one should place the Gayatri upon his own body,
Verse 172 (padma.1.46.172)
caturviṁśati sthāneṣu āpādamastakeṣu ca tatkāraṁ vinyasedyogī padāṁguṣṭhe vicakṣaṇaḥ
in the twenty-four places, from the feet to the head. The discerning yogi should place the syllable 'tat' at the big toe,
Verse 173 (padma.1.46.173)
sakāraṁ gulphadeśe tu vikāraṁ jaṁghayornyaset tukāraṁ jānumadhye ca vakāraṁ corudeśataḥ

gokāraṁ jaṭhare nyasya dekāraṁ stanayornyaset vakāraṁ hṛdaye nyasya syakāraṁ karadeśataḥ
placing 'go' at the belly, and 'de' upon the two breasts; placing 'va' at the heart, and 'sya' at the hands,
Verse 176 (padma.1.46.176)
dhīkāraṁ vadane nyasya makāraṁ tāluke nyaset hikāraṁ nāsikāgre ca dhikāraṁ cakṣuṣornyaset
placing 'dhī' at the mouth, and 'ma' at the palate; 'hi' at the tip of the nose, and 'dhi' upon the two eyes,
Verse 177 (padma.1.46.177)
yokāraṁ tu bhruvormadhye yokāraṁ ca lalāṭake naḥkāraṁ tu mukhe pūrve prakāraṁ dakṣiṇe mukhe
the syllable 'yo' between the eyebrows, and 'yo' again on the forehead; the syllable 'naḥ' on the eastern face, and 'pra' on the southern face,
Verse 178 (padma.1.46.178)
cokāraṁ paścime nyasya dakāraṁ cottare nyaset yātkāraṁ mūrdhni vinyasya sarvavyāpī vyavasthitaḥ
placing 'co' on the western face, and 'da' on the northern face; placing the final syllable 'yāt' on the crown of the head, one stands established as all-pervading.
Verse 179 (padma.1.46.179)
etānvinyasya dharmātmā brahmaviṣṇuśivātmakaḥ mahāyogī mahājñānī paraṁ nirvāṇakaṁ vrajet
Having thus placed these, the righteous soul, of the very nature of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, a great yogi, a great sage of knowledge, attains the supreme liberation.
Verse 180 (padma.1.46.180)
saṁdhyākāle punarnyāsaṁ śṛṇu tvaṁ tadyathārthataḥ oṁbhūriti hṛdaye nyasya oṁbhuvaśśirasi nyaset
Now hear the placement to be done again at the twilight hours, truly as it is: placing 'Om bhuh' at the heart, one should place 'Om bhuvah' on the head,
Verse 181 (padma.1.46.181)
oṁsvaḥ śikhāyai tatsaviturvareṇyamiti kalevare oṁbhargo devasya dhīmahīti netrayoḥ
'Om svah' at the crown-lock, 'tat savitur varenyam' upon the body, 'Om bhargo devasya dhimahi' upon the two eyes,
Verse 182 (padma.1.46.182)
oṁdhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāditi karayornyaset oṁāpo jyotī rasomṛtaṁ brahma bhūrbhuvaḥsvarom ityudakasparśamātreṇa pāpātpūto vrajeddhariṁ
and 'Om dhiyo yo nah pracodayat' upon the hands. By the mere touch of water with the words 'Om — water, light, essence, nectar, Brahman, bhuh bhuvah svah, Om,' one, purified of sin, goes to Hari.
Verse 183 (padma.1.46.183)
oṁbhūḥ oṁbhuvaḥ oṁsvaḥ oṁmahaḥ oṁjanaḥ oṁtapaḥ oṁsatyam oṁtatsaviturvareṇyaṁ bhargo devasya dhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt oṁāpo jyotī rasomṛtaṁ brahma bhūrbhuvaḥsvarom iti savyāhṛti sapraṇavāṁ dvādaśa oṁkārāṁ saṁdhyākāle kuṁbhakena vāratrayaṁ japtvā sūryopasthāne sāvitrīṁ caturviṁśatyakṣarāṁ japtvā mahāvidyādhiko bhavati brahmatvaṁ labhate
'Om bhuh, Om bhuvah, Om svah, Om mahah, Om janah, Om tapah, Om satyam; Om tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi dhiyo yo nah pracodayat; Om apo jyoti raso'mrtam brahma bhurbhuvahsvarom' — reciting thus the seven vyahritis together with the twelve-syllabled Om, at the twilight hour, with breath-retention, three times; and having recited, while facing the sun, the twenty-four-syllabled Savitri, one becomes possessed of great wisdom and attains the state of Brahma.
Verse 184 (padma.1.46.184)
ṣaṭkukṣilakṣaṇāṁ putra gāyatrīṁ śṛṇu yatnataḥ yāṁ jñātvā tu paraṁ brahmasthānaṁ gacchati vai dvijaḥ
Hear diligently, my son, of the Gayatri marked by six divisions; knowing which, the twice-born truly goes to the supreme abode of Brahman.
Verse 185 (padma.1.46.185)
oṁtatsaviturvareṇiyaṁ bhargo devasya dhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt
"Om tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi, dhiyo yo nah pracodayat" — that most excellent light of the divine Sun, may we meditate upon it; may it inspire our thoughts.
Verse 186 (padma.1.46.186)
atha gāyatrī paṁcaśīrṣalakṣaṇam oṁbhūḥ oṁbhuvaḥ oṁsvaḥ oṁmahaḥ oṁjanaḥ oṁtapaḥ oṁsatyam oṁtatsaviturvareṇyaṁ bhargo devasya dhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt
Now, the mark of the Gayatri with five heads: Om bhuh, Om bhuvah, Om svah, Om mahah, Om janah, Om tapah, Om satyam; Om tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi dhiyo yo nah pracodayat.
Verse 187 (padma.1.46.187)
savyāhṛtiṁ tu gāyatrīṁ punarnyāsaṁ tu kārayet sarvapāpavinirmukto viṣṇusāyujyatāṁ vrajet
One should again perform the placement of the Gayatri together with the vyahritis; freed from all sin, one attains union with Vishnu.
Verse 188 (padma.1.46.188)
oṁbhūḥ pādābhyām oṁbhuvaḥ jānubhyām oṁsvaḥ kaṭyām oṁmahaḥ nābhau oṁjanaḥ hṛdaye nyaset oṁtapaḥ karayoḥ oṁsatyaṁ lalāṭe oṁtatsaviturvareṇiyaṁ bhargo devasya dhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt iti śikhāyām
Om bhuh on the two feet, Om bhuvah on the two knees, Om svah at the waist, Om mahah at the navel, Om janah at the heart, Om tapah on the two hands, Om satyam on the forehead; and 'Om tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi dhiyo yo nah pracodayat' on the crown-lock.
Verse 189 (padma.1.46.189)
The brahmin who does not know this in this way is the very lowest of brahmins; his sin is not destroyed, even if he receives abundant gifts.
Verse 190 (padma.1.46.190)
imāṁ yo vetti gāyatrīṁ sarvabījasamanvitām sa vetti caturo vedānyogajñānaṁ japatrayam
He who knows this Gayatri, endowed with every seed-syllable, knows the four Vedas, the knowledge of yoga, and the threefold recitation.
Verse 191 (padma.1.46.191)
He who does not know it is remembered as lower than a shudra; to such an unpurified brahmin, no ancestral offering should be given.
Verse 192 (padma.1.46.192)
na snānaphaladaḥ kaścitsarvaṁ ca niṣphalaṁ bhavet vidyā vittaṁ tathā janma dvijatvaṁ kāraṇaṁ yataḥ
No bathing yields its fruit for him, and everything becomes fruitless; for learning, wealth, birth, and the state of twice-born-ness are all dependent upon this knowledge.
Verse 193 (padma.1.46.193)
niṣphalaṁ sakalaṁ tasya medhyaṁ puṣpaṁ yathā'śucau caturvedāśca gāyatrī purā vai tulitā mayā
All is fruitless for him, like a pure flower offered to an impure thing. Of old, I myself weighed the four Vedas against the Gayatri,
Verse 194 (padma.1.46.194)
caturvedātparā gurvī gāyatrī mokṣadā smṛtā daśabhirjanmajanitaṁ śatena ca purā kṛtam
and the Gayatri was found weightier than the four Vedas, and is remembered as the bestower of liberation. Sin born of ten births, and that done before over a hundred births,
Verse 195 (padma.1.46.195)
triyugaṁ tu sahasreṇa gāyatrī haṁti kilbiṣam gāyatrīmakṣamālāyāṁ sāyaṁ prātaśca yo japet
and sin spanning three ages — the Gayatri destroys it a thousandfold. He who recites the Gayatri on a rosary, in the evening and the morning,
Verse 196 (padma.1.46.196)
caturṇāmapi vedānāṁ phalaṁ prāpnotyasaṁśayam trisaṁdhyaṁ yo japennityaṁ gāyatrīṁ hāyanaṁ dvijaḥ
obtains, without doubt, the fruit of all four Vedas. The twice-born who recites the Gayatri daily at the three twilights, for a full year,
Verse 197 (padma.1.46.197)
tasya pāpaṁ kṣayaṁ yāti janmakoṭisamudbhavam gāyatryuccāramātreṇa pāpakūṭātpunāti ca
his sin, born of crores of births, is destroyed. By the mere utterance of the Gayatri, one is purified even from a mountain of sin,
Verse 198 (padma.1.46.198)
svargāpavargamāpnoti japtvā nityaṁ dvijottamaḥ vāsudevasya maṁtrāṇi japedyastu dinedine
and the best of the twice-born, by daily recitation, attains both heaven and final liberation. He who recites the mantras of Vasudeva day after day,
Verse 199 (padma.1.46.199)
praṇamecca hareḥ pādau sa gacchedapavargitām vāsudevasya stotrāṇi mukhe cāpi kathottamā
and bows to the feet of Hari, attains final liberation. He who keeps the hymns of Vasudeva, and the finest of tales, ever in his mouth,
Verse 200 (padma.1.46.200)
paṁkasya lavamātraṁ tu tasya dehe na tiṣṭhati vedaśāstrāvagāhena trisrotaḥ snānajaṁ phalam
not even the slightest speck of mud remains upon his body. By immersion in the Vedas and scriptures, one gains the fruit born of bathing in the triple-streamed Ganga,
Verse 201 (padma.1.46.201)
dharmapāṭhakṛtāṁ loke yajñakoṭiphalaṁ labhet evaṁ vipraguṇānvaktuṁ na śaknomi dvijottama
and those who recite dharma in this world obtain the fruit of crores of sacrifices. Thus, O best of the twice-born, I am unable fully to describe the virtues of the brahmin —
Verse 202 (padma.1.46.202)
viśvarūpaśca ko dehī samūrto harireva ca yasya śāpādvināśaḥ syādāyurvidyā yaśo dhanam
what embodied being is of universal form, embodied, but Hari himself? By whose curse comes destruction of life, learning, fame, and wealth,
Verse 203 (padma.1.46.203)
varadānātsamāyāṁti sarvāḥ saṁpattayastathā viṣṇurbrahmaṇyatāmeti sadā vipra prasādataḥ
and by whose granting of a boon all prosperities likewise come. Vishnu ever takes on brahmin-hood through the grace shown to brahmins.
Verse 204 (padma.1.46.204)
namo brahmaṇyadevāya gobrāhmaṇahitāya ca jagaddhitāya kṛṣṇāya goviṁdāya namo namaḥ
Salutation to the god who favours the brahmins, and who is the well-wisher of cows and brahmins; salutation, salutation to Krishna, the benefactor of the universe, to Govinda.
Verse 205 (padma.1.46.205)
maṁtreṇaivaṁ hariṁ yastu pūjayetsatataṁ naraḥ prasādī ca haristasya viṣṇusāyujyatāṁ vrajet
The man who ever worships Hari with this very mantra — Hari becomes gracious to him, and he attains union with Vishnu.
Verse 206 (padma.1.46.206)
ya idaṁ śṛṇuyātpuṇyamākhyānaṁ dharmavigraham tasya pāpaṁ kṣayaṁ yāti janmajanmakṛtaṁ ca yat
He who hears this meritorious tale, the very embodiment of dharma — his sin, whatever committed birth after birth, is destroyed.
Verse 207 (padma.1.46.207)
yaḥ paṭhetpāṭhayedvāpi upadeṣṭā janasya ca na tasya punarāvṛttiḥ svargamakṣayamaśnute
He who recites it, or has it recited, or teaches it to people — for him there is no return to rebirth; he attains imperishable heaven.
Verse 208 (padma.1.46.208)
dhanaṁ dhānyaṁ labhedatra rājyabhogānarogitām satsutaṁ ca śubhāṁ kīrtiṁ devavadramate divi
He obtains here wealth and grain, the enjoyments of kingship, and freedom from disease, a virtuous son and auspicious fame, and delights in heaven like a god.
