The Birth of Garuda
Verse 1 (padma.1.47.1)
नारद उवाच। तव प्रसादतो ज्ञातो विप्रः पुण्यतमश्च यः। यथा जानामि देवेश क्रियया ब्राह्मणाधमम्
nārada uvāca tava prasādato jñāto vipraḥ puṇyatamaśca yaḥ yathā jānāmi deveśa kriyayā brāhmaṇādhamam
Narada said: "By your grace I have come to know which brahmin is most meritorious. I would now like to know, O lord of gods, by what conduct one becomes the lowest of brahmins."
Verse 2 (padma.1.47.2)
ब्रूहि शीघ्रं सुरश्रेष्ठ यदि प्रीतिं मयीच्छसि। ब्रह्मोवाच। स्नानैर्दशविधैर्मुक्तस्तथैव तर्पणादिभिः
brūhi śīghraṁ suraśreṣṭha yadi prītiṁ mayīcchasi brahmovāca snānairdaśavidhairmuktastathaiva tarpaṇādibhiḥ
"Tell me quickly, O best of gods, if you wish for my affection." Brahma said: "He who is devoid of the ten kinds of bathing, and likewise of tarpana and the like,"
Verse 3 (padma.1.47.3)
संध्यासंयमहीनश्च स एव ब्राह्मणाधमः। देवपूजाव्रतैर्मुक्तो वेदविद्यादिभिस्तथा
saṁdhyāsaṁyamahīnaśca sa eva brāhmaṇādhamaḥ devapūjāvratairmukto vedavidyādibhistathā
"and devoid of the twilight-rites and self-restraint — he is indeed the lowest of brahmins. Devoid of the worship of the gods and of vows, and likewise of Vedic learning and the rest,"
Verse 4 (padma.1.47.4)
सत्यशौचादिभिश्चैव योगज्ञानाग्नितर्पणैः। पंचस्नानानानि विप्राणां कीर्तितानि महर्षिभिः
satyaśaucādibhiścaiva yogajñānāgnitarpaṇaiḥ paṁcasnānānāni viprāṇāṁ kīrtitāni maharṣibhiḥ
"and of truthfulness, purity and the rest, of the knowledge of yoga, and of offerings to the sacred fire. Five kinds of bathing for brahmins have been proclaimed by the great sages:"
Verse 5 (padma.1.47.5)
आग्नेयं वारुणं ब्राह्मं वायव्यं दिव्यमेव च। आग्नेयं भस्मना स्नानमद्भिर्वारुणमुच्यते
āgneyaṁ vāruṇaṁ brāhmaṁ vāyavyaṁ divyameva ca āgneyaṁ bhasmanā snānamadbhirvāruṇamucyate
"the fire-bath, the water-bath, the Brahma-bath, the wind-bath, and the divine bath. The fire-bath is bathing with sacred ash; the water-bath is called bathing with water,"
Verse 6 (padma.1.47.6)
आपोहिष्ठेति वै ब्राह्मं वायव्यं गोरजः स्मृतम्। अद्भिरातपवर्षाभिर्दिव्यं स्नानमुदाहृतम्
āpohiṣṭheti vai brāhmaṁ vāyavyaṁ gorajaḥ smṛtam adbhirātapavarṣābhirdivyaṁ snānamudāhṛtam
"the Brahma-bath is the mantra 'Apo hi shtha'; the wind-bath is remembered as rubbing with cow-dust; and the divine bath is bathing with water falling as sunshine and rain."
Verse 7 (padma.1.47.7)
एतैस्तु मंत्रतः स्नानात्तीर्थानां फलमाप्नुयात्। तुलसीपत्रसंलग्नं सालग्रामशिलांबु च
etaistu maṁtrataḥ snānāttīrthānāṁ phalamāpnuyāt tulasīpatrasaṁlagnaṁ sālagrāmaśilāṁbu ca
"By bathing with these mantras, one obtains the fruit of pilgrimage to sacred fords. Water touched by a tulasi leaf, and the water of a Shaligrama stone,"
Verse 8 (padma.1.47.8)
गवां शृंगोदकं चैव विप्रपादोदकं च यत्। गुरूणामेव मुख्यानां पूतात्पूतमिति स्मृतिः
gavāṁ śṛṁgodakaṁ caiva viprapādodakaṁ ca yat gurūṇāmeva mukhyānāṁ pūtātpūtamiti smṛtiḥ
"and the water from the horns of cows, and the water from a brahmin's feet, and that from the most eminent gurus — this is remembered as 'purer than the pure.'"
Verse 9 (padma.1.47.9)
त्याग तीर्थादिभिर्यज्ञैर्व्रतहोमादिभिस्तथा। यत्फलं लभते धीरः स्नानैरेतैस्तु तत्फलम्
tyāga tīrthādibhiryajñairvratahomādibhistathā yatphalaṁ labhate dhīraḥ snānairetaistu tatphalam
"The fruit that a wise man obtains through charity, pilgrimage, sacrifices, and vows and fire-offerings — that same fruit comes from these baths."
Verse 10 (padma.1.47.10)
तर्पणैश्च विनिर्मुक्तः पितॄणामेव नित्यशः। पितृहा नरकं याति संध्याहीनस्तु विप्रहा
tarpaṇaiśca vinirmuktaḥ pitṝṇāmeva nityaśaḥ pitṛhā narakaṁ yāti saṁdhyāhīnastu viprahā
"He who is ever devoid of the water-offerings to the ancestors is a killer of ancestors and goes to hell; and one devoid of the twilight-rites is a killer of brahmins."
Verse 11 (padma.1.47.11)
मंत्रव्रतविहीनश्च वेदविद्यागुणैरपि। यज्ञदानादिभिर्मुक्तो ब्राह्मणश्चाधमाधमः
maṁtravratavihīnaśca vedavidyāguṇairapi yajñadānādibhirmukto brāhmaṇaścādhamādhamaḥ
"One devoid of mantras and vows, and also of the virtues of Vedic learning, and devoid of sacrifice, charity and the rest — such a brahmin is the lowest of the low."
Verse 12 (padma.1.47.12)
यज्ञार्थका देवलका नाक्षत्रा ग्रामयाजकाः। परदाररता नित्यं पंचैते ब्राह्मणाधमाः
yajñārthakā devalakā nākṣatrā grāmayājakāḥ paradāraratā nityaṁ paṁcaite brāhmaṇādhamāḥ
"Those who perform sacrifice merely for pay, hired temple-priests, those without knowledge of the stars, village priests, and those ever devoted to other men's wives — these five are the lowest of brahmins."
Verse 13 (padma.1.47.13)
मंत्रसंस्कारहीनाश्च शुचिसंयमवर्जिताः। मोघाशिनो दुरात्मानो ब्राह्मणाश्चाधमाधमाः
maṁtrasaṁskārahīnāśca śucisaṁyamavarjitāḥ moghāśino durātmāno brāhmaṇāścādhamādhamāḥ
"Those devoid of mantra and sacraments, devoid of purity and self-restraint, who eat without proper observance, of evil soul — such brahmins are the lowest of the low."
Verse 14 (padma.1.47.14)
अपि स्तेयरता मूढाः सर्वधर्मविवर्जिताः। उन्मार्गगामिनो नित्यं ब्राह्मणाश्चाधमाधमाः
api steyaratā mūḍhāḥ sarvadharmavivarjitāḥ unmārgagāmino nityaṁ brāhmaṇāścādhamādhamāḥ
"Also those deluded ones devoted to theft, devoid of all dharma, ever walking a wayward path — such brahmins are the lowest of the low."
Verse 15 (padma.1.47.15)
श्राद्धादिकर्मरहिता गुरुसेवाविवर्जिताः। अमंत्रा भिन्नमर्यादा एते सर्वाधमाधमाः
śrāddhādikarmarahitā gurusevāvivarjitāḥ amaṁtrā bhinnamaryādā ete sarvādhamādhamāḥ
"Those devoid of shraddha and other rites, devoid of service to their guru, without mantras, having broken all bounds — these are the very lowest of the low."
Verse 16 (padma.1.47.16)
असंभाष्या इमे दुष्टास्सर्वे निरयगामिनः। अमेध्यास्ते दुराचारा अपूज्याश्च समंततः
asaṁbhāṣyā ime duṣṭāssarve nirayagāminaḥ amedhyāste durācārā apūjyāśca samaṁtataḥ
"These wicked ones should not even be spoken to; all of them go to hell. Impure, of evil conduct, they are unworthy of worship in every way."
Verse 17 (padma.1.47.17)
खड्गोपजीविकाः प्रेष्या गोवाहनरता द्विजाः। कारुवृत्युपजीवाश्च गणवार्द्धषिकाश्च ये
khaḍgopajīvikāḥ preṣyā govāhanaratā dvijāḥ kāruvṛtyupajīvāśca gaṇavārddhaṣikāśca ye
"Brahmins who live by the sword, who are servants, who delight in driving cattle as a trade, who live by craftsmen's trades, and those who lend at interest,"
Verse 18 (padma.1.47.18)
बालापण्याभिचाराश्च अंत्यजाश्रयमाश्रिताः। कृतघ्नाश्च गुरुघ्नाश्च एते सर्वाधमाः स्मृताः
bālāpaṇyābhicārāśca aṁtyajāśrayamāśritāḥ kṛtaghnāśca gurughnāśca ete sarvādhamāḥ smṛtāḥ
"those who sell girls, who practise sorcery, who take refuge with outcastes, the ungrateful, and those who harm their guru — these are all remembered as the lowest."
Verse 19 (padma.1.47.19)
ये चैवान्ये हताचाराः पाषंडा धर्मनिंदकाः। दूषकादेव भेदानामेते ब्रह्मद्विषो द्विजाः
ye caivānye hatācārāḥ pāṣaṁḍā dharmaniṁdakāḥ dūṣakādeva bhedānāmete brahmadviṣo dvijāḥ
"And whoever else are of ruined conduct, heretics, revilers of dharma — through their very corruption, these are brahmins who hate Brahman."
Verse 20 (padma.1.47.20)
तथापि ब्राह्मणश्चैव न हंतव्यः कदाचन। एनं हत्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठ ब्रह्महा पुरुषो भवेत्
tathāpi brāhmaṇaścaiva na haṁtavyaḥ kadācana enaṁ hatvā dvijaśreṣṭha brahmahā puruṣo bhavet
"Even so, a brahmin should never be slain. Having slain one, O best of the twice-born, a man becomes a killer of a brahmin."
Verse 21 (padma.1.47.21)
अंत्यजातिषु म्लेच्छेषु तथा चांडालजातिषु। पतितो वान्नयोनिभ्यां न हंतव्यः कथंचन
aṁtyajātiṣu mleccheṣu tathā cāṁḍālajātiṣu patito vānnayonibhyāṁ na haṁtavyaḥ kathaṁcana
"Even one born among the outcastes, among barbarians, or in the chandala caste, or a fallen one, or of any lowly womb — a brahmin should never in any way be slain."
Verse 22 (padma.1.47.22)
सर्वजातिस्त्रियं गत्वा सर्वाभक्ष्यस्य भक्षणात्। द्विजत्वं न विनश्येत पुण्याद्विप्रो भवेत्पुनः
sarvajātistriyaṁ gatvā sarvābhakṣyasya bhakṣaṇāt dvijatvaṁ na vinaśyeta puṇyādvipro bhavetpunaḥ
"Even having gone to a woman of any caste, or having eaten any forbidden food, his twice-born status does not perish; by merit he can again become a true brahmin."
Verse 23 (padma.1.47.23)
नारद उवाच। ईदृशं दुष्कृतं कृत्वा पश्चात्पुण्यं समाचरेत्। कां गतिं यात्यसौ विप्रः सर्वलोकपितामह
nārada uvāca īdṛśaṁ duṣkṛtaṁ kṛtvā paścātpuṇyaṁ samācaret kāṁ gatiṁ yātyasau vipraḥ sarvalokapitāmaha
Narada said: "Having committed such an evil deed, and afterward performed meritorious acts, to what state does that brahmin go, O grandsire of all worlds?"
Verse 24 (padma.1.47.24)
ब्रह्मोवाच। कृत्वा सर्वाणि पापानि पश्चाद्यस्तु जितेंद्रियः। मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यः पुनर्ब्रह्मत्वमर्हति
brahmovāca kṛtvā sarvāṇi pāpāni paścādyastu jiteṁdriyaḥ mucyate sarvapāpebhyaḥ punarbrahmatvamarhati
Brahma said: "He who, having committed all manner of sins, afterward becomes self-controlled, is freed from all sins and again becomes worthy of brahmin-hood."
Verse 25 (padma.1.47.25)
शृणु पुत्र कथां रम्यां विचित्रां च पुरातनीम्। कस्यचिद्ब्राह्मणस्यापि यौवनाढ्यः सुतोऽभवत्
śṛṇu putra kathāṁ ramyāṁ vicitrāṁ ca purātanīm kasyacidbrāhmaṇasyāpi yauvanāḍhyaḥ suto'bhavat
"Hear, my son, a delightful and wondrous tale of old. A certain brahmin had a son rich in youth,"
Verse 26 (padma.1.47.26)
ततो यौवनसंपत्तेर्मोहाच्च पूर्वकर्मणः। चांडालीमगमत्सद्यस्तस्याः प्रियतरोऽभवत्
tato yauvanasaṁpattermohācca pūrvakarmaṇaḥ cāṁḍālīmagamatsadyastasyāḥ priyataro'bhavat
"then, out of the delusion born of the wealth of his youth and of his past deeds, he went at once to a chandala woman, and became most dear to her."
Verse 27 (padma.1.47.27)
तस्यामुत्पादितास्तेन पुत्रा दुहितरस्तथा। स्वकुटुंबं परित्यज्य गृहे तस्याश्चिरं स्थितः
tasyāmutpāditāstena putrā duhitarastathā svakuṭuṁbaṁ parityajya gṛhe tasyāściraṁ sthitaḥ
"By her he fathered sons and daughters likewise; abandoning his own family, he stayed long in her house."
Verse 28 (padma.1.47.28)
अन्या भक्ष्यं न चाश्नाति घृणया च सुरां त्यजेत्। तमुवाच सदा सा च भक्षयान्यतरां सुराम्
anyā bhakṣyaṁ na cāśnāti ghṛṇayā ca surāṁ tyajet tamuvāca sadā sā ca bhakṣayānyatarāṁ surām
"He would not eat food from another caste, and out of disgust he avoided liquor. She always said to him, 'Drink some liquor.'"
Verse 29 (padma.1.47.29)
तामुवाच तदा शौचं गदितुं नार्हसि प्रिये। उत्कारो जायते तस्याः श्रवणात्सततं मम
tāmuvāca tadā śaucaṁ gadituṁ nārhasi priye utkāro jāyate tasyāḥ śravaṇātsatataṁ mama
"He said to her then, 'Do not speak of purity, my dear; disgust always arises in me at the very hearing of it.'"
Verse 30 (padma.1.47.30)
एकदा स मृगान्वेषात्श्रांतः सुप्तो गृहे दिवा। गृहीत्वा सा सुरां तस्य हसित्वा च मुखे ददौ
ekadā sa mṛgānveṣātśrāṁtaḥ supto gṛhe divā gṛhītvā sā surāṁ tasya hasitvā ca mukhe dadau
"One day, weary from hunting deer, he slept in the house during the day. She took liquor and, laughing, poured it into his mouth."
Verse 31 (padma.1.47.31)
ततो विप्रमुखादग्निः प्रजज्वाल समंततः। ज्वाला तु सकुटुबांतामदहच्च गृहं वसु
tato vipramukhādagniḥ prajajvāla samaṁtataḥ jvālā tu sakuṭubāṁtāmadahacca gṛhaṁ vasu
"Then fire blazed forth from the brahmin's mouth on every side; and the flame burned the house, its wealth, and all his family together."
Verse 32 (padma.1.47.32)
हाहा कृत्वा समुत्थाय विललाप तदा द्विजः। विलापांते च जिज्ञासा समारब्धा च तेन हि
hāhā kṛtvā samutthāya vilalāpa tadā dvijaḥ vilāpāṁte ca jijñāsā samārabdhā ca tena hi
"Crying out in anguish, the twice-born one rose up and lamented; and at the end of his lament, he began to inquire —"
Verse 33 (padma.1.47.33)
कुतश्चाग्निः समुद्भूतो गृहे दाहः कथं मम। ततः खे तमुवाचेदं तेजस्ते ब्राह्मणस्य च
kutaścāgniḥ samudbhūto gṛhe dāhaḥ kathaṁ mama tataḥ khe tamuvācedaṁ tejaste brāhmaṇasya ca
"'Whence did this fire arise, and how did my house come to burn?' Then a voice from the sky said to him this: 'It was your own splendour, as a brahmin.'"
Verse 34 (padma.1.47.34)
कथिते तद्यथावृत्ते ब्राह्मणो विस्मयं गतः। विमृश्यार्थमुवाचेदं पुनः खेऽस्य हितं वचः
kathite tadyathāvṛtte brāhmaṇo vismayaṁ gataḥ vimṛśyārthamuvācedaṁ punaḥ khe'sya hitaṁ vacaḥ
"When told what had truly happened, the brahmin was struck with astonishment. Reflecting on the matter, he asked again, and the voice from the sky spoke these beneficial words to him —"
Verse 35 (padma.1.47.35)
विप्रणष्टं सुतेजस्ते तस्माद्धर्मचरो भव। ततो मुनिवरान्गत्वा पप्रच्छात्महितं द्विजः
vipraṇaṣṭaṁ sutejaste tasmāddharmacaro bhava tato munivarāngatvā papracchātmahitaṁ dvijaḥ
"'Your own splendour has been lost by you; therefore become a follower of dharma.' Then the twice-born went to the best of sages and asked what was for his own good."
Verse 36 (padma.1.47.36)
तमूचुर्मुनयः सर्वे दानधर्मं समाचर। ऋषय ऊचुः। पूयंते सर्वपापेभ्यो ब्राह्मणानि यमैर्व्रतैः
tamūcurmunayaḥ sarve dānadharmaṁ samācara ṛṣaya ūcuḥ pūyaṁte sarvapāpebhyo brāhmaṇāni yamairvrataiḥ
"All the sages said to him, 'Practise charity and dharma.' The sages said: 'Brahmins are purified from all sins through restraints and vows,'"
Verse 37 (padma.1.47.37)
नियमान्शास्त्रदृष्टांश्च पूतत्वार्थमुपाचर। चांद्रायणांश्च कृच्छ्रांश्च तप्तकृच्छ्रान्पुनः पुनः
niyamānśāstradṛṣṭāṁśca pūtatvārthamupācara cāṁdrāyaṇāṁśca kṛcchrāṁśca taptakṛcchrānpunaḥ punaḥ
"'observe the disciplines seen in the scriptures for the sake of purity — the Chandrayana fasts, and the Krichchhra penances, and the Tapta-Krichchhra again and again,'"
Verse 38 (padma.1.47.38)
प्राजापत्यांश्च दिव्यांश्च दोषशोषाय सत्वरम्। गच्छ तीर्थानि पूतानि गोविंदाराधनं कुरु
prājāpatyāṁśca divyāṁśca doṣaśoṣāya satvaram gaccha tīrthāni pūtāni goviṁdārādhanaṁ kuru
"'and the Prajapatya and divine penances, swiftly, for the withering away of your fault. Go to the sacred pilgrimage places, and worship Govinda.'"
Verse 39 (padma.1.47.39)
क्षयमेष्यंति पापानि न चिरेण समंततः। पुण्यतीर्थप्रभावाच्च गोविंदस्य प्रभावतः
kṣayameṣyaṁti pāpāni na cireṇa samaṁtataḥ puṇyatīrthaprabhāvācca goviṁdasya prabhāvataḥ
"'Your sins will be destroyed before long, in every way, by the power of the sacred fords and by the power of Govinda.'"
Verse 40 (padma.1.47.40)
क्षयमेष्यंति पापानि ब्रह्मत्वं प्राप्स्यते भवान्। शृणु तात यथावृत्तं कथयामः पुरातनम्
kṣayameṣyaṁti pāpāni brahmatvaṁ prāpsyate bhavān śṛṇu tāta yathāvṛttaṁ kathayāmaḥ purātanam
"'Your sins will be destroyed, and you will attain brahmin-hood.' Hear, O son, we shall tell the ancient tale exactly as it happened."
Verse 41 (padma.1.47.41)
आहारार्थी पुरा वत्स गरुडो विनतासुतः। पतंगोपि बहिः साक्षादंडान्निस्सृत्य शावकः
āhārārthī purā vatsa garuḍo vinatāsutaḥ pataṁgopi bahiḥ sākṣādaṁḍānnissṛtya śāvakaḥ
Long ago, my child, Garuda, son of Vinata, though a bird, hungry for food, having just emerged as a chick, literally out of the egg,
Verse 42 (padma.1.47.42)
क्षुधार्थी मातरं प्राह भक्ष्यं मे दीयतामिति। ततः पर्वतसंकाशं गरुडं च महाबलम्
kṣudhārthī mātaraṁ prāha bhakṣyaṁ me dīyatāmiti tataḥ parvatasaṁkāśaṁ garuḍaṁ ca mahābalam
tormented by hunger, said to his mother, 'Let food be given to me.' Then, seeing Garuda, mighty as a mountain and of great strength,
Verse 43 (padma.1.47.43)
दृष्ट्वा माता महाभागा तनयं हृष्टमानसा। क्षुधां ते बाधितुं पुत्र न शक्नोमि समंततः
dṛṣṭvā mātā mahābhāgā tanayaṁ hṛṣṭamānasā kṣudhāṁ te bādhituṁ putra na śaknomi samaṁtataḥ
his greatly fortunate mother, her mind gladdened by her son, said: 'My son, I am unable to satisfy your hunger in every way.'
Verse 44 (padma.1.47.44)
तव तातस्तपस्तेपे लौहित्यस्योत्तरे तटे। कश्यपो नाम धर्मात्मा साक्षाल्लोकपितामहः
tava tātastapastepe lauhityasyottare taṭe kaśyapo nāma dharmātmā sākṣāllokapitāmahaḥ
'Your father performs austerities on the northern bank of the Lauhitya — Kashyapa by name, righteous of soul, the very grandsire of the world.'
Verse 45 (padma.1.47.45)
तत्र गच्छस्व पितरं पृच्छ कामं यथा तव। अस्योपदेशतस्तात क्षुधा ते शममेष्यति
tatra gacchasva pitaraṁ pṛccha kāmaṁ yathā tava asyopadeśatastāta kṣudhā te śamameṣyati
'Go there to your father, and ask him as you wish. By his instruction, my child, your hunger will be appeased.'
Verse 46 (padma.1.47.46)
ततो मातुर्वचः श्रुत्वा वैनतेयो महाबलः। अगमत्पितुरभ्याशं समुहूर्तान्मनोजवः
tato māturvacaḥ śrutvā vainateyo mahābalaḥ agamatpiturabhyāśaṁ samuhūrtānmanojavaḥ
Then, hearing his mother's words, the mighty Vainateya, swift as thought, went to his father's presence within a single moment.
Verse 47 (padma.1.47.47)
दृष्ट्वा तातं मुनिश्रेष्ठं ज्वलंतमिव पावकम्। प्रणम्य शिरसा वाक्यमुवाच पितरं खगः
dṛṣṭvā tātaṁ muniśreṣṭhaṁ jvalaṁtamiva pāvakam praṇamya śirasā vākyamuvāca pitaraṁ khagaḥ
Seeing his father, the best of sages, blazing like fire, the bird bowed his head and spoke these words to his father:
Verse 48 (padma.1.47.48)
भक्षार्थी समनुप्राप्तः सुतोहं ते महात्मनः। क्षुधया पीडितो नाथ भक्ष्यं मे दीयतां प्रभो
bhakṣārthī samanuprāptaḥ sutohaṁ te mahātmanaḥ kṣudhayā pīḍito nātha bhakṣyaṁ me dīyatāṁ prabho
'I have come seeking food, I am your son, O great soul; tormented by hunger, O lord, let food be given to me, O master.'
Verse 49 (padma.1.47.49)
ततो ध्यानं समालभ्य ज्ञात्वा तं विनतासुतं। पुत्रस्नेहाद्वचश्चेदं प्रोवाच मुनिसत्तमः
tato dhyānaṁ samālabhya jñātvā taṁ vinatāsutaṁ putrasnehādvacaścedaṁ provāca munisattamaḥ
Then, engaging in meditation and recognizing him as the son of Vinata, the best of sages spoke these words, out of a father's love for his son:
Verse 50 (padma.1.47.50)
अनेकशतसाहस्रा निषादाः सरितांपतेः। तीरे तिष्ठंति पापिष्ठास्तान्संभक्ष्य सुखी भव
anekaśatasāhasrā niṣādāḥ saritāṁpateḥ tīre tiṣṭhaṁti pāpiṣṭhāstānsaṁbhakṣya sukhī bhava
'Hundreds of thousands of Nishadas, most sinful, dwell on the shore of the ocean; eat them, and be content.'
Verse 51 (padma.1.47.51)
तीर्थमुत्सादयंति स्म तीर्थकाका दुरासदाः। विना विप्रं निषादेषु भक्षय त्वमलक्षितं
tīrthamutsādayaṁti sma tīrthakākā durāsadāḥ vinā vipraṁ niṣādeṣu bhakṣaya tvamalakṣitaṁ
'They destroy the sacred fords — those unassailable "crows of the pilgrimage-place." Among the Nishadas, without harming a brahmin, eat unnoticed among them.'
Verse 52 (padma.1.47.52)
इत्युक्तः प्रययौ पक्षी भक्षयामास तांस्ततः। अलक्ष्यभावो विप्रोपि गिलितस्तेन पक्षिणा
ityuktaḥ prayayau pakṣī bhakṣayāmāsa tāṁstataḥ alakṣyabhāvo vipropi gilitastena pakṣiṇā
Thus told, the bird went forth and devoured them there; and, being indistinguishable among them, a brahmin too was swallowed by that bird.
Verse 53 (padma.1.47.53)
स तस्य गलके गाढं लालगीति द्विजस्तदा। वमितुं गिलितुं चापि न शशाक द्विजोत्तमः
sa tasya galake gāḍhaṁ lālagīti dvijastadā vamituṁ gilituṁ cāpi na śaśāka dvijottamaḥ
That brahmin then became firmly lodged in his throat; and the excellent bird was able neither to vomit him out nor to swallow him down.
Verse 54 (padma.1.47.54)
गत्वाथ पितरं प्राह किमेतदिति मे पितः। लग्नं मे गलके सत्वं प्रतिकर्तुं न शक्नुयां
gatvātha pitaraṁ prāha kimetaditi me pitaḥ lagnaṁ me galake satvaṁ pratikartuṁ na śaknuyāṁ
Then, going to his father, he said, 'O father, what is this? A creature is stuck in my throat, and I am unable to do anything about it.'
Verse 55 (padma.1.47.55)
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कश्यपस्तमुवाच ह। मयोक्तं ते पुरा वत्स ब्राह्मणोयं न बुध्यसे
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā kaśyapastamuvāca ha mayoktaṁ te purā vatsa brāhmaṇoyaṁ na budhyase
Hearing these words of his, Kashyapa said to him: 'I told you before, my child — do you not realize this is a brahmin?'
Verse 56 (padma.1.47.56)
इत्युक्त्वा च मुनिर्धीमान्द्विजं प्राह स धार्मिकः। आगच्छ त्वं ममासन्नं हितं ते प्रवदाम्यहं
ityuktvā ca munirdhīmāndvijaṁ prāha sa dhārmikaḥ āgaccha tvaṁ mamāsannaṁ hitaṁ te pravadāmyahaṁ
Having said this, the wise and righteous sage spoke to the swallowed brahmin: 'Come near to me, I shall tell you what is good for you.'
Verse 57 (padma.1.47.57)
तमुवाच तदा विप्रः कश्यपं मुनिपुंगवम्। ममैते सुहृदो नित्यं सर्वे संबंधिनः प्रियाः
tamuvāca tadā vipraḥ kaśyapaṁ munipuṁgavam mamaite suhṛdo nityaṁ sarve saṁbaṁdhinaḥ priyāḥ
The brahmin then said to Kashyapa, foremost of sages: 'These are always my friends, all my beloved relatives —'
Verse 58 (padma.1.47.58)
श्वशुराः स्यालकाश्चाप्तास्सबालाश्च तथापरे। एतैः सह प्रयास्यामि निरयं चापि वा शिवम्
śvaśurāḥ syālakāścāptāssabālāśca tathāpare etaiḥ saha prayāsyāmi nirayaṁ cāpi vā śivam
'my fathers-in-law, my brothers-in-law, my trusted ones, and others with their children too. With them I shall go, whether to hell or to a blessed state.'
Verse 59 (padma.1.47.59)
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा विस्मितः कश्यपोऽब्रवीत्। द्विजानां च कुले जातश्चांडालैः पतितो भवान्
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā vismitaḥ kaśyapo'bravīt dvijānāṁ ca kule jātaścāṁḍālaiḥ patito bhavān
Hearing his words, astonished, Kashyapa said: 'You, born in a family of brahmins, have fallen into association with chandalas.'
Verse 60 (padma.1.47.60)
पुरुषास्ते प्रतिष्ठंते घोरे च निरये ध्रुवम्। चिराय निष्कृतिस्तेषां नैवास्तीह कथंचन
puruṣāste pratiṣṭhaṁte ghore ca niraye dhruvam cirāya niṣkṛtisteṣāṁ naivāstīha kathaṁcana
'Such men are surely established in a terrible hell; for them there is no atonement here for a long time, in any way.'
Verse 61 (padma.1.47.61)
सर्वांश्चैव दुराचारांश्चांडालान्पापकारिणः। दोषांस्त्यक्त्वा नरः पश्चात्सुखी भवति नान्यथा
sarvāṁścaiva durācārāṁścāṁḍālānpāpakāriṇaḥ doṣāṁstyaktvā naraḥ paścātsukhī bhavati nānyathā
'A man becomes happy only by afterward abandoning all faults — all evil-conducted, sinful chandalas — and not otherwise.'
Verse 62 (padma.1.47.62)
अज्ञानाद्यदि वा मोहात्कृत्वा पापं सुदारुणं। ततो धर्मं चरेद्यस्तु स गच्छेत्परमां गतिं
ajñānādyadi vā mohātkṛtvā pāpaṁ sudāruṇaṁ tato dharmaṁ caredyastu sa gacchetparamāṁ gatiṁ
'If, out of ignorance or delusion, one has committed a most terrible sin, and afterward practises dharma, such a one attains the highest state.'
Verse 63 (padma.1.47.63)
पापकृन्न चरेद्धर्मं पापे कुर्यान्मतिं पुनः। शिलानावं यथारूढः सागरे संनिमज्जति
pāpakṛnna careddharmaṁ pāpe kuryānmatiṁ punaḥ śilānāvaṁ yathārūḍhaḥ sāgare saṁnimajjati
'But a sinner who does not practise dharma, and again turns his mind to sin, sinks in the ocean like one who has boarded a boat of stone.'
Verse 64 (padma.1.47.64)
कृत्वा सर्वाणि पापानि तथा दुर्गतिसंचयं। उपशांतो भवेत्पश्चात्तं दोषं शमयिष्यति
kṛtvā sarvāṇi pāpāni tathā durgatisaṁcayaṁ upaśāṁto bhavetpaścāttaṁ doṣaṁ śamayiṣyati
'Having committed all sins, and thus accumulated a mass of misfortune, if one becomes tranquil afterward, that fault will be quelled.'
Verse 65 (padma.1.47.65)
तमुवाच महाप्राज्ञं द्विजं मुनिवरोत्तमम्। यदिमां न जहातीह खगः सर्वांश्च बांधवान्
tamuvāca mahāprājñaṁ dvijaṁ munivarottamam yadimāṁ na jahātīha khagaḥ sarvāṁśca bāṁdhavān
Garuda said to that greatly wise brahmin, foremost of sages: 'If this bird here does not abandon him and all his kinsmen —'
Verse 66 (padma.1.47.66)
ततः प्राणं च त्यक्ष्यामि खगे मर्मावघातिनि। नोचेत्त्यजतु मे बंधून्प्रतिज्ञा मे दृढात्मनः
tataḥ prāṇaṁ ca tyakṣyāmi khage marmāvaghātini nocettyajatu me baṁdhūnpratijñā me dṛḍhātmanaḥ
'— then I, whose vitals are struck by this bird's grip, shall give up my life; unless he releases my kinsmen, this is my firm vow.'
Verse 67 (padma.1.47.67)
ततस्तार्क्ष्यमुवाचेदं मुनि र्ब्रह्मवधे भयात्। उद्वमैतान्सविप्रांश्च म्लेछानेतान्समंततः
tatastārkṣyamuvācedaṁ muni rbrahmavadhe bhayāt udvamaitānsaviprāṁśca mlechānetānsamaṁtataḥ
Then the sage, fearing the sin of killing a brahmin, said this to Garuda: 'Vomit up these, along with the brahmin, and all these barbarians, on every side.'
Verse 68 (padma.1.47.68)
वनेषु पर्वतान्तेषु दिक्षु तान्पतगेश्वर। उद्ववाम ततः शीघ्रं दोषज्ञः पितुराज्ञया
vaneṣu parvatānteṣu dikṣu tānpatageśvara udvavāma tataḥ śīghraṁ doṣajñaḥ piturājñayā
'Into the forests, and among the mountains, in all directions, O lord of birds.' Then, knowing his fault, by his father's command, he swiftly vomited them out.
Verse 69 (padma.1.47.69)
ततः सर्वेऽभवन्व्यक्ता अकेशाः श्मश्रुवर्जिताः। यवना भोजनप्रीताः किंचिच्छ्मश्रुयुताश्च ये
tataḥ sarve'bhavanvyaktā akeśāḥ śmaśruvarjitāḥ yavanā bhojanaprītāḥ kiṁcicchmaśruyutāśca ye
Then all of them became transformed — some hairless and beardless, the Yavanas, fond of certain food, and some with a little beard,

अग्नौ च नग्नकाः पापा दक्षिणस्यामवाचकाः। घोराः प्राणिवधे प्रीता दुरात्मानो गवाशिनः
agnau ca nagnakāḥ pāpā dakṣiṇasyāmavācakāḥ ghorāḥ prāṇivadhe prītā durātmāno gavāśinaḥ
and sinful ones, naked before the fire, of unclear speech in the south, terrible ones fond of killing living beings, evil-souled eaters of cattle,

नैर्ऋते कुवदाः पापा गोब्राह्मणवधोद्यताः। खर्पराः पश्चिमे पूर्वे निवसंति च दारुणाः
nairṛte kuvadāḥ pāpā gobrāhmaṇavadhodyatāḥ kharparāḥ paścime pūrve nivasaṁti ca dāruṇāḥ
in the southwest, sinful ones of foul speech, intent on killing cows and brahmins; in the west, the Kharparas, and dreadful ones dwelling in the east,

वायव्यां च तुरुष्काश्च श्मश्रुपूर्णा गवाशिनः। अश्वपृष्ठसमारूढाः प्रयुद्धेष्वनिवर्तिनः
vāyavyāṁ ca turuṣkāśca śmaśrupūrṇā gavāśinaḥ aśvapṛṣṭhasamārūḍhāḥ prayuddheṣvanivartinaḥ
in the northwest, the Turushkas, full-bearded, eaters of cattle, mounted on horseback, never retreating in battle,

उत्तरस्यां च गिरयो म्लेच्छाः पर्वतवासिनः। सर्वभक्षा दुराचाराः वधबंधरताः किल
uttarasyāṁ ca girayo mlecchāḥ parvatavāsinaḥ sarvabhakṣā durācārāḥ vadhabaṁdharatāḥ kila
and in the north, mountain-dwelling barbarians of the hills, eaters of everything, of evil conduct, delighting in killing and captivity,

ऐशान्यां निरयास्संति कर्तॄणां वृक्षवासिनः। एते म्लेच्छा स्थिता दिक्षु घोरास्ते शस्त्रपाणयः
aiśānyāṁ nirayāssaṁti kartṝṇāṁ vṛkṣavāsinaḥ ete mlecchā sthitā dikṣu ghorāste śastrapāṇayaḥ
and in the northeast are the tree-dwelling ones of the Kartri tribe. These barbarians, terrible, weapons in hand, are established in all the directions —

येषां च स्पर्शमात्रेण सचेलो जलमाविशेत्। एतेषां च कलौ देशेप्यकाले धर्मवर्जिते
yeṣāṁ ca sparśamātreṇa sacelo jalamāviśet eteṣāṁ ca kalau deśepyakāle dharmavarjite
'by the mere touch of whom, one must enter water fully clothed to purify oneself. And in the Kali age, in this land devoid of dharma, out of season,'

संस्पर्शं च प्रकुर्वंति वित्तलोभात्समंततः। म्लेच्छांस्तान्मोचयित्वा तु क्षुधया परिपीडितः
saṁsparśaṁ ca prakurvaṁti vittalobhātsamaṁtataḥ mlecchāṁstānmocayitvā tu kṣudhayā paripīḍitaḥ
'people make contact with them everywhere, out of greed for wealth.' Having thus released those barbarians, tormented by hunger,

पुनराह द्विजस्तात क्षुधा मे बाधतेतराम्। अवदद्गरुडं तत्र कश्यपः कृपया द्रुतम्
punarāha dvijastāta kṣudhā me bādhatetarām avadadgaruḍaṁ tatra kaśyapaḥ kṛpayā drutam
the bird again said, 'Father, my hunger afflicts me exceedingly.' Then Kashyapa, out of compassion, quickly said to Garuda:

तिष्ठंतौ विपुलौ तत्र जिघांसू गजकच्छपौ। अप्रमेयौ महासत्वौ सागरस्यैकदेशतः
tiṣṭhaṁtau vipulau tatra jighāṁsū gajakacchapau aprameyau mahāsatvau sāgarasyaikadeśataḥ
'There stand, huge, wishing to kill each other, an elephant and a tortoise, immeasurable, of great being, in one part of the ocean.'
Verse 79 (padma.1.47.79)
तावप्सु च द्रुतं वत्स क्षुधां ते वारयिष्यतः। स पितुर्वचनं श्रुत्वा तत्र गत्वाभिपद्य तौ
tāvapsu ca drutaṁ vatsa kṣudhāṁ te vārayiṣyataḥ sa piturvacanaṁ śrutvā tatra gatvābhipadya tau
'They, in the water, will quickly quell your hunger, my child.' Hearing his father's words, he went there and seized both of them,

नखैर्भित्वा कूर्मगजौ महासत्वौ महाजवः। खमुत्पपात तौ धृत्वा विद्युद्वेगो महाबलः
nakhairbhitvā kūrmagajau mahāsatvau mahājavaḥ khamutpapāta tau dhṛtvā vidyudvego mahābalaḥ
tearing the tortoise and elephant, those two great beings, with his claws — of great speed, he flew up into the sky, holding them both, swift as lightning, of great might.
Verse 81 (padma.1.47.81)
आधारतां न गच्छंति नगाश्च मंदरादयः। ततो योजनलक्षे द्वे गत्वा मारुतरंहसा
ādhāratāṁ na gacchaṁti nagāśca maṁdarādayaḥ tato yojanalakṣe dve gatvā mārutaraṁhasā
Mountains such as Mandara could not serve as his resting-place. Then, having gone two hundred thousand yojanas with the speed of wind,

महत्यां जंबुशाखायां निपपात महाबलः। भग्ना सा सहसा शाखा तां पतंतीं खगेश्वरः
mahatyāṁ jaṁbuśākhāyāṁ nipapāta mahābalaḥ bhagnā sā sahasā śākhā tāṁ pataṁtīṁ khageśvaraḥ
the mighty one alighted upon a great branch of the Jambu tree; that branch suddenly broke, and the lord of birds,

गोब्राह्मणवधाद्भीतो दधार तरसा बली। धृत्वा तां रुचिरं वेगाद्द्रवंतं खे महाबलम्
gobrāhmaṇavadhādbhīto dadhāra tarasā balī dhṛtvā tāṁ ruciraṁ vegāddravaṁtaṁ khe mahābalam
afraid of the sin of killing cows and brahmins beneath it, swiftly and mightily held it up. Having caught it, that mighty and radiant one, rushing swiftly,
Verse 84 (padma.1.47.84)
गत्वा विष्णुरुवाचेदं नररूपधरो हरिः। कस्त्वं भ्रमसि चाकाशे किमर्थं पतगेश्वर
gatvā viṣṇuruvācedaṁ nararūpadharo hariḥ kastvaṁ bhramasi cākāśe kimarthaṁ patageśvara
went through the sky; and Vishnu, Hari, having taken a human form, said this: 'Who are you, wandering through the sky, and for what purpose, O lord of birds?'
Verse 85 (padma.1.47.85)
विधृत्य महतीं शाखां महांतौ गजकच्छपौ। तमुवाच द्विजस्तस्मिन्नररूपधरं हरिम्
vidhṛtya mahatīṁ śākhāṁ mahāṁtau gajakacchapau tamuvāca dvijastasminnararūpadharaṁ harim
Holding the great branch, and the two great beings, the elephant and tortoise, the bird spoke to that Hari who had taken human form:

गरुडोहं महाबाहो खगरूपः स्वकर्मणा। कश्यपस्य मुनेस्सूनुर्विनतागर्भसंभवः
garuḍohaṁ mahābāho khagarūpaḥ svakarmaṇā kaśyapasya munessūnurvinatāgarbhasaṁbhavaḥ
'I am Garuda, O mighty-armed one, in bird-form by my own karma, the son of the sage Kashyapa, born from the womb of Vinata.'
Verse 87 (padma.1.47.87)
पश्यैतौ च महासत्वौ भक्षणार्थं मया धृतौ। न धरा च ममाधारो न वृक्षा न च पर्वताः
paśyaitau ca mahāsatvau bhakṣaṇārthaṁ mayā dhṛtau na dharā ca mamādhāro na vṛkṣā na ca parvatāḥ
'See these two great beings, held by me for food. Neither the earth is my support, nor trees, nor mountains —'
Verse 88 (padma.1.47.88)
अनेकयोजनान्यूर्ध्वं दृष्ट्वा जंबूमहीरुहम्। अपतंतस्य शाखायां सहेमौ परिभक्षितुं
anekayojanānyūrdhvaṁ dṛṣṭvā jaṁbūmahīruham apataṁtasya śākhāyāṁ sahemau paribhakṣituṁ
'having seen the great Jambu tree many yojanas above, I alighted, together with these two, upon a branch, to eat them there.'
Verse 89 (padma.1.47.89)
भग्ना सा सहसा शाखा तां च धृत्वा भ्रमाम्यहम्। कोटिकोटिसहस्राणां ब्राह्मणानां गवां वधात्
bhagnā sā sahasā śākhā tāṁ ca dhṛtvā bhramāmyaham koṭikoṭisahasrāṇāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ gavāṁ vadhāt
'That branch suddenly broke, and holding it, I now wander about; for fear of killing crores of brahmins and cows beneath it,'
Verse 90 (padma.1.47.90)
भयं तत्र विषादो मे सहसा प्राविशद्बुध। किं करोमि कथं यामि को मे वेगं सहिष्यति
bhayaṁ tatra viṣādo me sahasā prāviśadbudha kiṁ karomi kathaṁ yāmi ko me vegaṁ sahiṣyati
'fear and despair suddenly entered me there, O wise one. What shall I do, where shall I go, who can bear my speed?'
Verse 91 (padma.1.47.91)
इत्युक्ते पतगश्रेष्ठं प्रोवाचेदं हरिस्तदा। अस्मद्बाहुं समारुह्य भक्षेमौ गजकच्छपौ
ityukte patagaśreṣṭhaṁ provācedaṁ haristadā asmadbāhuṁ samāruhya bhakṣemau gajakacchapau
Thus addressed, Hari then said this to the best of birds: 'Mount upon my arm, and eat these two, the elephant and the tortoise.'
Verse 92 (padma.1.47.92)
गरुड उवाच। ममाधारं न गच्छंति सागराश्च नगोत्तमाः। अथ चैवं महासत्वं कथं त्वं धारयिष्यसि
garuḍa uvāca mamādhāraṁ na gacchaṁti sāgarāśca nagottamāḥ atha caivaṁ mahāsatvaṁ kathaṁ tvaṁ dhārayiṣyasi
Garuda said: 'Even oceans and the greatest mountains cannot become my support. How then will you bear such a great being as myself?'
Verse 93 (padma.1.47.93)
ऋते नारायणादन्यः को मां धारयितुं क्षमः। त्रैलोक्ये कः पुमांस्तिष्ठेद्यो वेगं मे सहिष्यति
ṛte nārāyaṇādanyaḥ ko māṁ dhārayituṁ kṣamaḥ trailokye kaḥ pumāṁstiṣṭhedyo vegaṁ me sahiṣyati
'Other than Narayana, who else is capable of bearing me? What man in the three worlds could stand and bear my speed?'
Verse 94 (padma.1.47.94)
हरिरुवाच। स्वकार्यमुद्धरेत्प्राज्ञः स्वकार्यं कुरु सांप्रतम्। कृत्वा कार्यं खगश्रेष्ठ विजानीषे च मां ध्रुवम्
hariruvāca svakāryamuddharetprājñaḥ svakāryaṁ kuru sāṁpratam kṛtvā kāryaṁ khagaśreṣṭha vijānīṣe ca māṁ dhruvam
Hari said: 'The wise man should first accomplish his own task; do your task now. Having done your task, O best of birds, you will surely come to know me.'
Verse 95 (padma.1.47.95)
महासत्वं च तं दृष्ट्वा विमृश्य मनसा खगः। एवमस्त्विति चोक्त्वा स पपात ह महाभुजे
mahāsatvaṁ ca taṁ dṛṣṭvā vimṛśya manasā khagaḥ evamastviti coktvā sa papāta ha mahābhuje
Seeing that great being, and reflecting in his mind, the bird said 'So be it,' and alighted upon that mighty arm.
Verse 96 (padma.1.47.96)
न चचाल भुजस्तस्य सन्निपाते खगेशितुः। तत्र स्थित्वा स तां शाखां मुमोच पर्वतालये
na cacāla bhujastasya sannipāte khageśituḥ tatra sthitvā sa tāṁ śākhāṁ mumoca parvatālaye
The arm did not shake at the alighting of the lord of birds. Standing there, he let go of that branch onto a mountain-abode.
Verse 97 (padma.1.47.97)
शाखापतनमात्रेण सचराचरकानना। चचाल वसुधा चैव सागराः प्रचकंपिरे
śākhāpatanamātreṇa sacarācarakānanā cacāla vasudhā caiva sāgarāḥ pracakaṁpire
By the mere falling of that branch, the earth with its forests full of moving and unmoving beings shook, and the oceans trembled.
Verse 98 (padma.1.47.98)
ततश्च खादितौ सत्त्वौ सहसा गजकच्छपौ। तृप्तिं न प्राप्तवान्सोपि क्षुधा तस्य न शाम्यति
tataśca khāditau sattvau sahasā gajakacchapau tṛptiṁ na prāptavānsopi kṣudhā tasya na śāmyati
Then he suddenly devoured those two beings, the elephant and the tortoise; yet even so he did not attain satisfaction, and his hunger was not appeased.
Verse 99 (padma.1.47.99)
एतज्ज्ञात्वा तु गोविंदस्तमुवाच खगेश्वरम्। भुजस्य मम मांसं तु भक्षयित्वा सुखी भव
etajjñātvā tu goviṁdastamuvāca khageśvaram bhujasya mama māṁsaṁ tu bhakṣayitvā sukhī bhava
Knowing this, Govinda said to the lord of birds: 'Eat the flesh of my arm, and be content.'
Verse 100 (padma.1.47.100)
इत्युक्ते प्रचुरं मांसं भुजस्य तस्य तेन हि। खादितं क्षुधया पुत्र व्रणं तस्य न विद्यते
ityukte pracuraṁ māṁsaṁ bhujasya tasya tena hi khāditaṁ kṣudhayā putra vraṇaṁ tasya na vidyate
Thus told, he ate much flesh of that arm out of hunger, my son; yet no wound was found upon it.
Verse 101 (padma.1.47.101)
तमुवाच महाप्राज्ञश्चराचरगुरुं हरिम्। कस्त्वं किं वा प्रियं तेद्य करिष्यामि च सांप्रतम्
tamuvāca mahāprājñaścarācaraguruṁ harim kastvaṁ kiṁ vā priyaṁ tedya kariṣyāmi ca sāṁpratam
The greatly wise Garuda then said to Hari, the teacher of all moving and unmoving beings: 'Who are you, and what is dear to you today? I shall now do it.'
Verse 102 (padma.1.47.102)
नारायण उवाच। विद्धि नारायणं मां हि त्वत्प्रियार्थं समागतम्। रूपं स्वं दर्शयामास प्रत्ययार्थं च तस्य वै
nārāyaṇa uvāca viddhi nārāyaṇaṁ māṁ hi tvatpriyārthaṁ samāgatam rūpaṁ svaṁ darśayāmāsa pratyayārthaṁ ca tasya vai
Narayana said: 'Know that I am Narayana, who has come here for your sake, out of love for you.' And he showed his own form, in order to convince him,
Verse 103 (padma.1.47.103)
पीतवस्त्रं घनश्यामं चतुर्भुजमनोहरम्। शंखचक्रगदापद्मधरं सर्वसुरेश्वरम्
pītavastraṁ ghanaśyāmaṁ caturbhujamanoharam śaṁkhacakragadāpadmadharaṁ sarvasureśvaram
clad in yellow, dark as a rain-cloud, four-armed and enchanting, bearing conch, discus, mace, and lotus, the lord of all the gods.
Verse 104 (padma.1.47.104)
तं च दृष्ट्वा गरुत्मांश्च प्रणम्य शिरसा हरिम्। प्रियं किं ते करिष्यामि वद नः पुरुषोत्तम
taṁ ca dṛṣṭvā garutmāṁśca praṇamya śirasā harim priyaṁ kiṁ te kariṣyāmi vada naḥ puruṣottama
Seeing him, Garutman bowed his head to Hari and said: 'What dear thing shall I do for you? Tell me, O Purushottama.'
Verse 105 (padma.1.47.105)
तमब्रवीन्महातेजा देवदेवेश्वरो हरिः। भव मे वाहनं शूर सखे त्वं सार्वकालिकम्
tamabravīnmahātejā devadeveśvaro hariḥ bhava me vāhanaṁ śūra sakhe tvaṁ sārvakālikam
The greatly splendrous Hari, lord of the gods of gods, said to him: 'Become my vehicle, O hero, my friend, for all time.'
Verse 106 (padma.1.47.106)
तमुवाच खगश्रेष्ठो धन्योहं विबुधेश्वर। सफलं जन्म मे नाथ त्वां च दृष्ट्वाद्य मे प्रभो
tamuvāca khagaśreṣṭho dhanyohaṁ vibudheśvara saphalaṁ janma me nātha tvāṁ ca dṛṣṭvādya me prabho
The best of birds said to him: 'I am blessed, O lord of the wise; my birth is fruitful, O master, having today seen you, O lord.'
Verse 107 (padma.1.47.107)
प्रार्थयित्वा च पितरावागमिष्यामि तेऽन्तिकम्। प्रीतो विष्णुरुवाचेदं भव त्वमजरामरः
prārthayitvā ca pitarāvāgamiṣyāmi te'ntikam prīto viṣṇuruvācedaṁ bhava tvamajarāmaraḥ
'Having asked my parents, I shall come into your presence.' Pleased, Vishnu said this: 'Become undecaying and immortal,'
Verse 108 (padma.1.47.108)
अवध्यः सर्वभूतेभ्यः कर्म तेजश्च मत्समम्। सर्वत्र ते गतिश्चास्तु निखिलं तु सुखं ध्रुवम्
avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtebhyaḥ karma tejaśca matsamam sarvatra te gatiścāstu nikhilaṁ tu sukhaṁ dhruvam
'unslayable by all beings, with power and splendour equal to mine; may your movement be everywhere, and may complete happiness surely be yours.'
Verse 109 (padma.1.47.109)
संमिलतु द्रुतं सर्वं यत्ते मनसि वर्तते। यथेष्टं प्रीतिमाहारमकष्टेन प्रलप्स्यसे
saṁmilatu drutaṁ sarvaṁ yatte manasi vartate yatheṣṭaṁ prītimāhāramakaṣṭena pralapsyase
'May all that is in your mind be fulfilled swiftly. You shall obtain delightful food as you wish, without difficulty.'
Verse 110 (padma.1.47.110)
व्यसनान्मातरं सद्यो मोचयिष्यसि नान्यथा। एवमुक्त्वा हरिः सद्यस्तत्रैवांतरधीयत
vyasanānmātaraṁ sadyo mocayiṣyasi nānyathā evamuktvā hariḥ sadyastatraivāṁtaradhīyata
'You shall at once free your mother from her misfortune, and in no other way.' Having said this, Hari immediately vanished from that very place.
Verse 111 (padma.1.47.111)
तार्क्ष्योपि पितरं गत्वा कथयच्चाखिलं ततः। स तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रहृष्टात्मा तनयं पुनरब्रवीत्
tārkṣyopi pitaraṁ gatvā kathayaccākhilaṁ tataḥ sa tacchrutvā prahṛṣṭātmā tanayaṁ punarabravīt
Tarkshya too went to his father and told him everything. Hearing it, delighted at heart, he spoke again to his son:
Verse 112 (padma.1.47.112)
धन्योहं च खगश्रेष्ठ धन्या ते जननी शिवा। धन्यं क्षेत्रं कुलं चैव यस्य पुत्रस्त्वमीदृशः
dhanyohaṁ ca khagaśreṣṭha dhanyā te jananī śivā dhanyaṁ kṣetraṁ kulaṁ caiva yasya putrastvamīdṛśaḥ
'I am blessed, O best of birds, and blessed is your auspicious mother; blessed is the family whose son you are, such as you are.'
Verse 113 (padma.1.47.113)
यस्य पुत्रः कुले जातो वैष्णवः पुरुषोत्तमः। कुलकोटिं समुद्धृत्य विष्णुसायुज्यतां व्रजेत्
yasya putraḥ kule jāto vaiṣṇavaḥ puruṣottamaḥ kulakoṭiṁ samuddhṛtya viṣṇusāyujyatāṁ vrajet
'He whose son, born in his family, is devoted to Vishnu, the highest of men, redeems crores of his lineage, and attains union with Vishnu.'
Verse 114 (padma.1.47.114)
विष्णुं यः पूजयेन्नित्यं विष्णुं ध्यायेत गायति। जपेन्मंत्रं सदा विष्णोः स्तोत्रं तस्य पठिष्यति
viṣṇuṁ yaḥ pūjayennityaṁ viṣṇuṁ dhyāyeta gāyati japenmaṁtraṁ sadā viṣṇoḥ stotraṁ tasya paṭhiṣyati
'He who ever worships Vishnu, meditates on Vishnu, sings of him, ever recites Vishnu's mantra, and reads his hymns,'
Verse 115 (padma.1.47.115)
प्रसादं च भजेन्नित्यमुपवासं हरेर्दिने। क्षयाच्च सर्वपापानां मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
prasādaṁ ca bhajennityamupavāsaṁ harerdine kṣayācca sarvapāpānāṁ mucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ
'and ever partakes of his grace, fasting on the day of Hari — through the destruction of all sins, he is freed; there is no doubt of this.'
Verse 116 (padma.1.47.116)
यस्य तिष्ठति गोविंदो मानसे च सदैव हि। स एव च लभेद्दास्यं सपुण्यैः पुरुषोत्तमः
yasya tiṣṭhati goviṁdo mānase ca sadaiva hi sa eva ca labheddāsyaṁ sapuṇyaiḥ puruṣottamaḥ
'He in whose mind Govinda ever dwells — he alone obtains the loving servitude of Purushottama, along with merit.'
Verse 117 (padma.1.47.117)
जन्मकोटिसहस्रेभ्यः कृत्वा सत्कर्मसंचयम्। क्षयाच्च सर्वपापानां विष्णोः किंकरतां व्रजेत्
janmakoṭisahasrebhyaḥ kṛtvā satkarmasaṁcayam kṣayācca sarvapāpānāṁ viṣṇoḥ kiṁkaratāṁ vrajet
'Having accumulated good deeds over thousands of crores of births, and through the destruction of all sins, one attains servitude to Vishnu.'
Verse 118 (padma.1.47.118)
धन्योसौ मानवो लोके विष्णोस्सादृश्यमाव्रजेत्। नित्यः सुरवरैः पूज्यो लोकनाथोऽच्युतोऽव्ययः
dhanyosau mānavo loke viṣṇossādṛśyamāvrajet nityaḥ suravaraiḥ pūjyo lokanātho'cyuto'vyayaḥ
'Blessed is that man in the world who attains likeness to Vishnu — the eternal one, worshipped by the best of gods, the lord of the worlds, unfallen, imperishable.'
Verse 119 (padma.1.47.119)
सुप्रसन्नो भवेद्यस्य स एव पुरुषोत्तमः। तपोभिर्बहुभिर्धर्मैर्मखैर्नानाविधैरपि
suprasanno bhavedyasya sa eva puruṣottamaḥ tapobhirbahubhirdharmairmakhairnānāvidhairapi
'He with whom that very Purushottama becomes truly pleased attains everything. Even by many austerities, dharmas, and various kinds of sacrifices,'
Verse 120 (padma.1.47.120)
विष्णुर्न लभ्यते देवैस्त्वयासौ विप्र लभ्यते। सपत्नीव्यसनाद्धोरान्मातरं ते प्रमोचय
viṣṇurna labhyate devaistvayāsau vipra labhyate sapatnīvyasanāddhorānmātaraṁ te pramocaya
'Vishnu is not obtained even by the gods, yet he has been obtained by you. Now free your mother from the terrible misfortune of her co-wife.'
Verse 121 (padma.1.47.121)
ततो यास्यसि देवेशं कृत्वा मातुः प्रतिक्रियाम्। गृहीत्वा जनकस्याज्ञां लब्ध्वा विष्णोर्वरं महत्
tato yāsyasi deveśaṁ kṛtvā mātuḥ pratikriyām gṛhītvā janakasyājñāṁ labdhvā viṣṇorvaraṁ mahat
"Then, having remedied your mother's situation, you shall go to the lord of gods, having taken your father's permission, and having obtained Vishnu's great boon."
Verse 122 (padma.1.47.122)
अंबापार्श्वं गतो हृष्टस्तां प्रणम्याग्रतः स्थितः। विनतोवाच। अभवद्भोजनं तेऽद्य पुत्र दृष्टः पितापि च
aṁbāpārśvaṁ gato hṛṣṭastāṁ praṇamyāgrataḥ sthitaḥ vinatovāca abhavadbhojanaṁ te'dya putra dṛṣṭaḥ pitāpi ca
Delighted, he went to his mother's side, bowed to her, and stood before her. Vinata said: "Did you get food today, my son? And did you see your father too?"
Verse 123 (padma.1.47.123)
किमर्थं वा विलंबस्ते चिंतया व्यथिता ह्यहम्। स मातुर्वचनं श्रुत्वा गरुडः प्रहसन्निव
kimarthaṁ vā vilaṁbaste ciṁtayā vyathitā hyaham sa māturvacanaṁ śrutvā garuḍaḥ prahasanniva
"And why were you delayed? I was troubled with worry." Hearing his mother's words, Garuda, as if smiling,
Verse 124 (padma.1.47.124)
कथयामास वृत्तांतं सा श्रुत्वा विस्मिताऽभवत्। कथं च दुःष्करं कर्म शिशुभावात्त्वया कृतम्
kathayāmāsa vṛttāṁtaṁ sā śrutvā vismitā'bhavat kathaṁ ca duḥṣkaraṁ karma śiśubhāvāttvayā kṛtam
related the whole account; hearing it, she was astonished. "How, even in the state of a mere child, did you accomplish such a difficult feat?"
Verse 125 (padma.1.47.125)
धन्याहं मे कुलं धन्यं यस्त्वं विष्णुसखोऽभवः। लब्ध्वा वरं महात्मानं दृष्ट्वा मे हृष्यते मनः
dhanyāhaṁ me kulaṁ dhanyaṁ yastvaṁ viṣṇusakho'bhavaḥ labdhvā varaṁ mahātmānaṁ dṛṣṭvā me hṛṣyate manaḥ
"I am blessed, my family is blessed, in that you have become the friend of Vishnu. Having obtained this boon, and seeing you, my mind rejoices."
Verse 126 (padma.1.47.126)
पौरुषेण त्वया वत्स उद्धृतं मे कुलद्वयम्। सुपर्ण उवाच। मातः किं ते करिष्यामि प्रियमेव तदुच्यताम्
pauruṣeṇa tvayā vatsa uddhṛtaṁ me kuladvayam suparṇa uvāca mātaḥ kiṁ te kariṣyāmi priyameva taducyatām
"By your manly deed, my son, both my families have been redeemed." Suparna said: "Mother, what shall I do for you? Tell me what would please you,"
Verse 127 (padma.1.47.127)
कार्यं कृत्वाथ यास्यामि पार्श्वं नारायणस्य च। एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु सा प्राह गरुडं विनता सती
kāryaṁ kṛtvātha yāsyāmi pārśvaṁ nārāyaṇasya ca etacchrutvā tu sā prāha garuḍaṁ vinatā satī
"having done the task, I shall then go to Narayana's side." Hearing this, the virtuous Vinata said to Garuda:
Verse 128 (padma.1.47.128)
महद्दुःखं च मे चास्ति कुरु तात प्रतिक्रियाम्। भगिनी मे सपत्नी सा पणितहं तया पुरा
mahadduḥkhaṁ ca me cāsti kuru tāta pratikriyām bhaginī me sapatnī sā paṇitahaṁ tayā purā
"I have a great sorrow; remedy it, my son. My sister is my rival — I was once wagered by her,"
Verse 129 (padma.1.47.129)
तस्या दास्यमहं प्राप्ता कस्तारयति मामितः। कृष्णं कृत्वा विषैरश्वं तस्याः पुत्रैर्महोरगैः
tasyā dāsyamahaṁ prāptā kastārayati māmitaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ kṛtvā viṣairaśvaṁ tasyāḥ putrairmahoragaiḥ
"and I have become her slave — who will save me from this? Her sons, the great serpents, made the horse black with their poison —"
Verse 130 (padma.1.47.130)
उषःकालेऽवदत्सा च अश्वोयं कृष्णतां व्रजेत्। ततोहमवदं तत्र सदा चायं रुचासितः
uṣaḥkāle'vadatsā ca aśvoyaṁ kṛṣṇatāṁ vrajet tatohamavadaṁ tatra sadā cāyaṁ rucāsitaḥ
"at dawn she said, 'This horse will become black.' Then I said, 'It is always white in colour,'"
Verse 131 (padma.1.47.131)
मिथ्या ते वचनं मातः प्रतिज्ञां साऽकरोत्तदा। ततोहमब्रुवं कद्रूं शपथं नागमातरम्
mithyā te vacanaṁ mātaḥ pratijñāṁ sā'karottadā tatohamabruvaṁ kadrūṁ śapathaṁ nāgamātaram
"'Your word is false, mother' — she made a wager then. So I made a vow to Kadru, mother of serpents —"
Verse 132 (padma.1.47.132)
यदीमं कृष्णताभ्येति हरेरश्वमहं तदा। कृता भवामि ते दासीत्यहमेतत्तदाऽवदम्
yadīmaṁ kṛṣṇatābhyeti hareraśvamahaṁ tadā kṛtā bhavāmi te dāsītyahametattadā'vadam
"'If this horse of Hari's does indeed turn black, then I shall become your slave' — thus I said at that time."
Verse 133 (padma.1.47.133)
ततस्तस्मिन्हरेरश्वे कृते कृष्णे च कृत्रिमैः। तस्याः पुत्रैश्च धूर्तैश्च दासीत्वमगमं तदा
tatastasminhareraśve kṛte kṛṣṇe ca kṛtrimaiḥ tasyāḥ putraiśca dhūrtaiśca dāsītvamagamaṁ tadā
"Then, that horse of Hari's having been made black by deceitful means, by her cunning sons, I fell into slavery."
Verse 134 (padma.1.47.134)
यस्मिन्काले ह्यभीष्टञ्च तस्या द्रव्यं ददाम्यहम्। तस्मिन्काले ह्यदासीत्वं यास्यामि कुलनंदन
yasminkāle hyabhīṣṭañca tasyā dravyaṁ dadāmyaham tasminkāle hyadāsītvaṁ yāsyāmi kulanaṁdana
"At the time when I give her whatever object she desires, at that time I shall be freed from slavery, O joy of the family."
Verse 135 (padma.1.47.135)
गरुड उवाच। पृच्छ शीघ्रं च मातस्तां करिष्यामि प्रतिक्रियाम्। भक्षयिष्यामि तान्नागान्प्रतिज्ञामे यथार्थतः
garuḍa uvāca pṛccha śīghraṁ ca mātastāṁ kariṣyāmi pratikriyām bhakṣayiṣyāmi tānnāgānpratijñāme yathārthataḥ
Garuda said: "Ask her quickly, mother, and I shall remedy it. I shall devour those serpents — this is truly my vow."
Verse 136 (padma.1.47.136)
ततः कद्रूमुवाचेदं विनता दुःखिता सती। अभीष्टं वद कल्याणि येन मुच्येय कृच्छ्रतः
tataḥ kadrūmuvācedaṁ vinatā duḥkhitā satī abhīṣṭaṁ vada kalyāṇi yena mucyeya kṛcchrataḥ
Then the sorrowing but virtuous Vinata said this to Kadru: "Tell me your desire, O auspicious one, by which I might be freed from this hardship."
Verse 137 (padma.1.47.137)
अब्रवीत्सा दुराचारा पीयूषं दीयतामिति। एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनमभवत्सा च निष्प्रभा
abravītsā durācārā pīyūṣaṁ dīyatāmiti etacchrutvā tu vacanamabhavatsā ca niṣprabhā
That wicked woman said, "Let nectar be given to me." Hearing this word, she became downcast.
Verse 138 (padma.1.47.138)
ततः शनैरुपागम्य तनयं प्राह दुःखिता। अमृतं प्रार्थयत्पापा तात किं वा करिष्यसि
tataḥ śanairupāgamya tanayaṁ prāha duḥkhitā amṛtaṁ prārthayatpāpā tāta kiṁ vā kariṣyasi
Then, slowly approaching her son, sorrowfully she said: "That sinful woman has asked for the nectar of immortality — my son, what will you do?"
Verse 139 (padma.1.47.139)
श्रुत्वा वाक्यं गरुत्मांश्च महाक्रोधसमन्वितः। अमृतं चानयिष्यामि मातर्मा विमुखी भव
śrutvā vākyaṁ garutmāṁśca mahākrodhasamanvitaḥ amṛtaṁ cānayiṣyāmi mātarmā vimukhī bhava
Hearing this, Garutman, filled with great anger, said: "I shall bring the nectar; mother, do not be downcast."
Verse 140 (padma.1.47.140)
एवमुक्त्वा तु तरसा स गतः पितुरंतिकम्। अमृतं चानयिष्यामि मातुरर्थेऽधुनाऽनघ
evamuktvā tu tarasā sa gataḥ pituraṁtikam amṛtaṁ cānayiṣyāmi māturarthe'dhunā'nagha
Having said this, he swiftly went into his father's presence: "I shall now bring the nectar for my mother's sake, O sinless one."
Verse 141 (padma.1.47.141)
स तस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा मुनिः प्राह खगेश्वरम्। सत्यलोकस्य वै चोर्ध्वे विश्वकर्मविनिर्मिता
sa tasya vacanaṁ śrutvā muniḥ prāha khageśvaram satyalokasya vai cordhve viśvakarmavinirmitā
Hearing his words, the sage said to the lord of birds: "Above Satyaloka itself, fashioned by Vishvakarma,"
Verse 142 (padma.1.47.142)
पुरी चास्ति सभा रम्या देवानां हित हेतवे। वह्निप्राकारदुर्लभ्या दुर्धर्षा चासुरैः सुरैः
purī cāsti sabhā ramyā devānāṁ hita hetave vahniprākāradurlabhyā durdharṣā cāsuraiḥ suraiḥ
"there is a city, and a lovely assembly-hall, for the benefit of the gods, hard to reach because of its wall of fire, unassailable by asuras or even gods,"
Verse 143 (padma.1.47.143)
रक्षार्थं निर्मितो देवः सुरैस्तत्र महाबलः। यं यं पश्यति वीरः स स एव भस्मतां व्रजेत्
rakṣārthaṁ nirmito devaḥ suraistatra mahābalaḥ yaṁ yaṁ paśyati vīraḥ sa sa eva bhasmatāṁ vrajet
"a mighty guardian-deity was fashioned there by the gods for protection — whomever that hero looks upon becomes reduced to ashes."
Verse 144 (padma.1.47.144)
सुपर्ण उवाच। नारायणाद्वरो लब्धो मया च मुनिसत्तम। भयं नास्तीह मे तात सुरासुरगणादपि
suparṇa uvāca nārāyaṇādvaro labdho mayā ca munisattama bhayaṁ nāstīha me tāta surāsuragaṇādapi
Suparna said: "I have obtained a boon from Narayana, O best of sages; I have no fear here, father, even from the hosts of gods and asuras."
Verse 145 (padma.1.47.145)
एममुक्त्वा गरुत्मान्स उद्धृत्य सागराज्जलम्। जगामाकाशमाविश्य खगश्चोर्ध्वं मनोजवः
emamuktvā garutmānsa uddhṛtya sāgarājjalam jagāmākāśamāviśya khagaścordhvaṁ manojavaḥ
Having said this, Garutman, drawing up water from the ocean, entered the sky and, swift as thought, the bird went upward.
Verse 146 (padma.1.47.146)
पक्षवातेन तस्यैव रजः समुद्गतं बहु। तस्यांतिकं न च त्यक्तमगमत्तस्य तच्च यः
pakṣavātena tasyaiva rajaḥ samudgataṁ bahu tasyāṁtikaṁ na ca tyaktamagamattasya tacca yaḥ
By the very beating of his wings, much dust rose up; the guardian did not abandon his post near it, and approached him,
Verse 147 (padma.1.47.147)
गत्वा चंचूजलेनापि वह्निं निर्वापयद्बली। रजोभिः परिपूर्णाक्षो न सुरस्तं च पश्यति
gatvā caṁcūjalenāpi vahniṁ nirvāpayadbalī rajobhiḥ paripūrṇākṣo na surastaṁ ca paśyati
but the mighty one, going there, extinguished the fire with the water in his beak; his eyes filled with dust, that guardian-god could not see him.
Verse 148 (padma.1.47.148)
जघान रक्षिवर्गांस्तानमृतं चाहरद्बली। आनयंतं च पीयूषं खगं गत्वा शतक्रतुः
jaghāna rakṣivargāṁstānamṛtaṁ cāharadbalī ānayaṁtaṁ ca pīyūṣaṁ khagaṁ gatvā śatakratuḥ
The mighty one slew those guardians and seized the nectar. And as the bird was bringing back the nectar, Indra too went to him,
Verse 149 (padma.1.47.149)
ऐरावतं समारूढो वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह। खगरूपधरः कस्त्वं पीयूषं हरसे बलात्
airāvataṁ samārūḍho vākyametaduvāca ha khagarūpadharaḥ kastvaṁ pīyūṣaṁ harase balāt
mounted on Airavata, and spoke these words: "Who are you, in bird-form, who seizes the nectar by force?"
Verse 150 (padma.1.47.150)
अप्रियं सर्वदेवानां कृत्वा जीवे रतिः कथम्। विशिखैरग्निसंकाशैर्नयामि यममंदिरम्
apriyaṁ sarvadevānāṁ kṛtvā jīve ratiḥ katham viśikhairagnisaṁkāśairnayāmi yamamaṁdiram
"Having done what is displeasing to all the gods, how can you delight in living? I shall send you to the abode of Yama with arrows blazing like fire."
Verse 151 (padma.1.47.151)
श्रुत्वा वाक्यं हरेः कोपादुवाच स महाबलः। नयामि तव पीयूषं दर्शयस्व पराक्रमम्
śrutvā vākyaṁ hareḥ kopāduvāca sa mahābalaḥ nayāmi tava pīyūṣaṁ darśayasva parākramam
Hearing Indra's words, that mighty one said in anger: "I shall take away your nectar — show me your prowess."
Verse 152 (padma.1.47.152)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाबाहुर्जघान विशिखैः शितैः। यथामेरुगिरेः शृंगं तोयवर्षेण तोयदः
etacchrutvā mahābāhurjaghāna viśikhaiḥ śitaiḥ yathāmerugireḥ śṛṁgaṁ toyavarṣeṇa toyadaḥ
Hearing this, the mighty-armed Indra struck him with sharp arrows, as a rain-cloud strikes the peak of Mount Meru with a downpour of water.
Verse 153 (padma.1.47.153)
नखैरशनिसंकाशैर्बिभेद गरुडो गजम्। मातलि च रथं चक्रं तथा देवान्पुरस्सरान्
nakhairaśanisaṁkāśairbibheda garuḍo gajam mātali ca rathaṁ cakraṁ tathā devānpurassarān
Garuda, with claws like thunderbolts, tore into the elephant, and Matali, and the chariot and its wheel, and the gods who stood before him.
Verse 154 (padma.1.47.154)
व्यथितोसौ महाबाहुर्मातलिर्गजपुंगवः। विमुखाः पक्षवातेन सर्वे देवगणास्तदा
vyathitosau mahābāhurmātalirgajapuṁgavaḥ vimukhāḥ pakṣavātena sarve devagaṇāstadā
The mighty-armed Matali was distressed, and so was the lordly elephant; and all the hosts of gods were then driven back by the beating of his wings.
Verse 155 (padma.1.47.155)
ततस्तु कोपितो जिष्णुर्जघानकुलिशेन तम्। कुलिशस्यावपातेन न च क्षुब्धो महाखगः
tatastu kopito jiṣṇurjaghānakuliśena tam kuliśasyāvapātena na ca kṣubdho mahākhagaḥ
Then, enraged, Indra struck him with his thunderbolt; but the great bird was not disturbed by the fall of the thunderbolt.
Verse 156 (padma.1.47.156)
स्वं मोघं भिदुरं दृष्ट्वा हरिर्भीतोऽभवत्तदा। संनिवृत्य ततो युद्धात्तत्रैवांतरधीयत
svaṁ moghaṁ bhiduraṁ dṛṣṭvā harirbhīto'bhavattadā saṁnivṛtya tato yuddhāttatraivāṁtaradhīyata
Seeing his own weapon rendered ineffective, Indra became afraid; withdrawing from the battle, he vanished right there.
Verse 157 (padma.1.47.157)
सुतरामपिगच्छंतं वेगाद्भूतलमागतः। अब्रवीत्स सुरश्रेष्ठः सर्वदेवगणाग्रतः
sutarāmapigacchaṁtaṁ vegādbhūtalamāgataḥ abravītsa suraśreṣṭhaḥ sarvadevagaṇāgrataḥ
Garuda descended with great speed to the earth. That best of gods then spoke, before all the hosts of gods:
Verse 158 (padma.1.47.158)
शक्र उवाच। यदि दास्यसि पीयूषमिदानीं नागमातरि। भुजगाश्चामराः सर्वे क्रियंते हि ध्रुवं तया
śakra uvāca yadi dāsyasi pīyūṣamidānīṁ nāgamātari bhujagāścāmarāḥ sarve kriyaṁte hi dhruvaṁ tayā
Shakra said: "If you now give the nectar to the mother of serpents, all the serpents will surely be made immortal by her."
Verse 159 (padma.1.47.159)
प्रतिज्ञा ते भवेन्नष्टा न फलं जीवितस्य ते। तस्मादिदं हरिष्यामि संमतेन तवानघ
pratijñā te bhavennaṣṭā na phalaṁ jīvitasya te tasmādidaṁ hariṣyāmi saṁmatena tavānagha
"Your vow will be lost, and there will be no benefit gained. Therefore, with your consent, O sinless one, I shall take this back."
Verse 160 (padma.1.47.160)
गरुत्मानुवाच। यस्मिन्काले ह्यदासी सा माता मे दुःखिता सती। विदिता सर्वलोकेषु हरेऽमृतं हरिष्यसि
garutmānuvāca yasminkāle hyadāsī sā mātā me duḥkhitā satī viditā sarvalokeṣu hare'mṛtaṁ hariṣyasi
Garutman said: "At the time when my sorrowing but virtuous mother is freed from slavery — known throughout all the worlds — you may then take back the nectar."
Verse 161 (padma.1.47.161)
एवमुक्त्वा महावीर्यो गत्वोवाच प्रसूं तदा। आनीतममृतं मातस्तस्या एव प्रदीयताम्
evamuktvā mahāvīryo gatvovāca prasūṁ tadā ānītamamṛtaṁ mātastasyā eva pradīyatām
Having said this, the greatly mighty one went and said to his mother: "Mother, I have brought the nectar; let it be given to her."
Verse 162 (padma.1.47.162)
प्रोत्फुल्लहृदया सा च दृष्ट्वा पुत्रं सहामृतम्। तामाहूयामृतं दत्वा चादासीतां तदा गता
protphullahṛdayā sā ca dṛṣṭvā putraṁ sahāmṛtam tāmāhūyāmṛtaṁ datvā cādāsītāṁ tadā gatā
Her heart blossoming with joy at seeing her son with the nectar, she called Kadru, gave her the nectar, and was then freed from slavery.
Verse 163 (padma.1.47.163)
तृणकाष्ठानि भूतानि पशवश्च सरीसृपाः। दृष्ट्वा सविस्मयास्सर्वे देवा महर्षयस्तदा
tṛṇakāṣṭhāni bhūtāni paśavaśca sarīsṛpāḥ dṛṣṭvā savismayāssarve devā maharṣayastadā
Grass, wood, living beings, animals, and reptiles — all the gods and great sages, seeing this, were astonished.
Verse 164 (padma.1.47.164)
मोचयित्वा तु तामंबां गरुडः सुष्ठुतां गतः। एतस्मिन्नंतरे शक्रो जहार सहसा सुधाम्
mocayitvā tu tāmaṁbāṁ garuḍaḥ suṣṭhutāṁ gataḥ etasminnaṁtare śakro jahāra sahasā sudhām
Having freed his mother, Garuda was greatly praised. Meanwhile, Shakra suddenly seized the nectar,

निधाय गरलं तत्र तया चानुपलक्षितः। प्रहृष्टहृदया कद्रूः पुत्रानाहूय संभ्रमात्
nidhāya garalaṁ tatra tayā cānupalakṣitaḥ prahṛṣṭahṛdayā kadrūḥ putrānāhūya saṁbhramāt
placing poison there instead, unnoticed by Kadru. Kadru, her heart delighted, hastily called her sons,

तेषां मुखे ददौ हृष्टा क्ष्वेडं चामृतलक्षणम्। तानुवाच प्रसूः पुत्रान्युष्माकं च कुले सदा
teṣāṁ mukhe dadau hṛṣṭā kṣveḍaṁ cāmṛtalakṣaṇam tānuvāca prasūḥ putrānyuṣmākaṁ ca kule sadā
and joyfully placed in their mouths the poison, mistaking it for the mark of nectar. The mother said to her sons: "In your family forever"

मुखे तिष्ठन्त्वमी दैवा बिंदवश्चस्तनिर्वृताः। महर्षयस्ततो देवाः सिद्धगंधर्वमानुषाः
mukhe tiṣṭhantvamī daivā biṁdavaścastanirvṛtāḥ maharṣayastato devāḥ siddhagaṁdharvamānuṣāḥ
"let these divine drops remain in your mouths, content." Then the great sages, gods, siddhas, gandharvas, and men,

ऊचुःस्सन्तु कुले मातरस्माकं च प्रसादतः। नागैर्विसर्जिता देवाः ससिद्धा मुनयस्तथा
ūcuḥssantu kule mātarasmākaṁ ca prasādataḥ nāgairvisarjitā devāḥ sasiddhā munayastathā
said, "May there be such good fortune in our families too, mother, by your grace!" Released by the serpents, the gods, together with the siddhas and sages,

जग्मुः स्वमालयं हृष्टा नागाः प्रमुदिताः स्थिताः। एतस्मिन्नंतरे नागांश्चखाद गरुडो बलात्
jagmuḥ svamālayaṁ hṛṣṭā nāgāḥ pramuditāḥ sthitāḥ etasminnaṁtare nāgāṁścakhāda garuḍo balāt
went joyfully to their own abodes; the serpents stood there delighted. Meanwhile, Garuda forcibly began to devour the serpents,

दिक्षु पलायिताः शेषाः पर्वतेषु वनेषु च। सागरेषु च पाताले बिलेषु तरुकोटरे
dikṣu palāyitāḥ śeṣāḥ parvateṣu vaneṣu ca sāgareṣu ca pātāle bileṣu tarukoṭare
and the rest fled in all directions — into the mountains and forests, into the oceans and Patala, into burrows and the hollows of trees,

निभृतेषु निकुञ्जेषु स्थिताः सर्पाश्च निर्वृताः। भुजगास्तस्य भक्ष्याश्च सदैव विधिनिर्मिताः
nibhṛteṣu nikuñjeṣu sthitāḥ sarpāśca nirvṛtāḥ bhujagāstasya bhakṣyāśca sadaiva vidhinirmitāḥ
and into hidden bowers, and stayed there content; for by divine ordinance the serpents are ever destined to be his food.
Verse 172 (padma.1.47.172)
स खादयित्वा नागांश्च संभाष्य पितरावथ। विबुधान्पूजयित्वा तु जगाम हरिमव्ययम्
sa khādayitvā nāgāṁśca saṁbhāṣya pitarāvatha vibudhānpūjayitvā tu jagāma harimavyayam
Having devoured the serpents, and then spoken with his parents, and having worshipped the gods, he went to the imperishable Hari.
Verse 173 (padma.1.47.173)
यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि सुपर्णचरितं शुभम्। सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः सुरलोके महीयते
yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādvāpi suparṇacaritaṁ śubham sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ suraloke mahīyate
He who recites or hears this auspicious tale of Suparna's deeds, freed from all sin, is exalted in the world of the gods.
