Verse 41 (padma.1.50.41)
The mute one said: "Why are you angered in vain, O brahmin? I am not a crane to you now. Your anger will accomplish nothing else with a crane elsewhere."

aspṛśyasparśanādeva ucchiṣṭaḥ patito mṛtaḥ suciraṁ narake sthitvā mlecchajātiṣu jāyate
By the touch of an untouchable, if one dies unpurified or fallen — having dwelt in hell for a very long time, one is born among barbarian peoples.
Verse 253 (padma.1.50.253)
tathaiva bahukīṭeṣu jāyate sattvajātiṣu tasmānna cirakāleṣu jānīyātpuṇyapātakam
And likewise one is born among the many kinds of insects. Therefore, over a long time, one should never forget to distinguish merit from sin.
Verse 254 (padma.1.50.254)
puṇyātpuṇyaprayogaiśca sarveṣāṁ martyavāsinām maraṇe yā gatiḥ puṁsāṁ gatirbhavati tādṛśī

prākcitau ca piturdehe mukhāgniṁ kārayetsutaḥ vidhinā maṁtrapūtena paścāddehaṁ dahetpunaḥ
Before the pyre, on the father's body, the son should apply the mouth-fire; then, according to rule, purified with mantra, he should afterward burn the body.

chitvā ca lohitaṁ celaṁ vahnau cātha jale kṣipet tataścaikādaśāhe ca śrāddhaṁ kuryādvicakṣaṇaḥ
and having cut the reddened cloth, throw it into fire, or into water. Then, on the eleventh day, the discerning one should perform the shraddha.

Verse 263 (padma.1.50.263)

On the fourth day, at three fortnights, at six months, and at the yearly anniversary; twelve monthly shraddhas — these sixteen are the total shraddhas.
Verse 264 (padma.1.50.264)
yasyaitāni na saṁtīha yathāśakti ca śraddhayā piśācatvaṁ sthiraṁ tasya dattaiḥ śrāddhaśatairapi
He for whom these are not performed, to the best of one's ability and with faith, his state as a pishacha remains fixed, even with a hundred shraddhas given otherwise.
Verse 265 (padma.1.50.265)

piturabdamaśaucaṁ syānmātuḥ ṣaṇmāsameva ca trimāsaṁ tu striyaścaiva tadarddhaṁ bhrātṛputrayoḥ
Impurity for the father is a year; for the mother it is six months; for one's wife, three months; and half that for a brother or son.
Verse 268 (padma.1.50.268)

sa kālaḥ kutapo jñeyaḥ pitṝṇāṁ dattamakṣayam śrāddhe trīṇi pavitrāṇi dauhitraṁ kutapastilāḥ
that time is to be known as 'Kutapa'; what is given to ancestors at that time is imperishable. In the shraddha, there are three purifying things: the daughter's son, the Kutapa hour, and sesame seeds.
Verse 271 (padma.1.50.271)

Verse 272 (padma.1.50.272)
dānaṁ pratigrahaṁ caiva śrāddhaṁ kṛtvā vivarjayet akartavyaśataṁ kṛtvā śrāddhaṁ kuryādvicakṣaṇaḥ

Verse 273 (padma.1.50.273)
tacca kartavyatāmeti svayamuktaṁ viriṁcinā śṛṇu putra purāvṛttaṁ bahūnāṁ ca vadāmyaham
and that becomes obligatory, as declared by Brahma himself. Hear, my son, an ancient event; I shall tell you of many such things.
Verse 274 (padma.1.50.274)
gurorgohananaṁ kṛtvā daduḥ śrāddhaṁ yayurdivam teṣāṁ ca kīrttanādeva śrāddhaṁ bhavati cākṣayam

prārthayitvā gṛhaṁ nītvā saptabhirbhrātṛbhirmudā gavyārthaṁ pitṛyajñe tāṁ dhenuṁ hatvā vimṛśya ca
having requested it and brought it home, the seven brothers, joyfully, for the sake of milk-products in the ancestral sacrifice, having reflected, killed that cow,
Verse 277 (padma.1.50.277)
dadurmāṁsaṁ ca vipre ca śeṣaṁ viprāṁstvabhojayan samāpya pitṛkarmāṇi vatsaṁ saṁgṛhyate dvijāḥ

Verse 303 (padma.1.50.303)
purā vairāṭaviṣaye rurodātīva dīnakaḥ pitṛtithau svayaṁ prāpte sarvābhāvācca roditi
Long ago, in the region of Virata, a poor man wept exceedingly. When the ancestral tithi arrived on its own, he wept from having nothing at all.
Verse 304 (padma.1.50.304)
ruditvā suciraṁ sopi papraccha kovidaṁ dvijaṁ brahmanpitṛtithāvadya kiṁsvitkṛtvā hitaṁ bhavet

pitṛyajñātparo yasmāddharmo nāsti kathaṁcana tasmātsarvaprayatnena śaktyā kuryādamatsaraḥ
