pātena takṣakādīnāṁ sudhāṁśoḥ śiśireṇa ca | aśvārohī kharomanyohanipāśastathā gajān

By the strikes of Takshaka and the other serpent lords, and by the Moon's cooling rays — a rider on horseback, in his fury, flung his noose likewise upon the elephants.

Verse 26 (padma.1.75.26)

—those exceedingly terrible danavas, like the destroyers of the final dissolution, were struck down with arrows, sword-strokes, tridents, spears, and axes.

Verse 29 (padma.1.75.29)

Verse 35 (padma.1.75.35)

yathā puṣkariṇīvṛṁde gajaḥ kaṁjavanaṁ śitaiḥ | śarapātairatho vegātsiṁhanādaiḥ punaḥ punaḥ

As an elephant tramples a lotus-grove in a pond, so he trampled the gods — with showers of sharp arrows, with speed, and with lion-roars again and again.

Verse 36 (padma.1.75.36)

—he struck Guhyakesha (Kubera) and Jagatprana (Vayu) with ten arrows each, and all the Rudras individually with six and seven arrows each—

Verse 40 (padma.1.75.40)

—he pierced all the Vasus, the Siddhas, Gandharvas, and Nagas with arrows, and pierced various gods in that battle with ten, eight, ten, and six arrows.

Verse 41 (padma.1.75.41)

ojaughādativīryāttu śīghralāghavardaśanān | āpatprāptāḥ surā bhītyā pratikartuṁ na ceśvarāḥ

Overwhelmed by the flood of his might and surpassing power, seeing his speed and skill, the gods, fallen into calamity, were, in their fear, powerless to strike back.

Verse 42 (padma.1.75.42)

maheśaśūlasaṁkāśaiḥ śarairmarmavibhedibhiḥ | tāḍitā nirjarā yuddhe mūrcchitā dharaṇīṁ yayuḥ

Struck by arrows resembling Maheshvara's own trident, piercing to the vital points, the immortals in that battle fell fainting to the earth.

Verse 43 (padma.1.75.43)

None of the foremost gods could bear to stand before him; then the gods, driven back and scattered, together with the lord of the three heavens—

Verse 44 (padma.1.75.44)

śaraṇyaṁ te hariṁ tatra śaraṇaṁ tāḍitā yayuḥ | etasminnaṁtare viṣṇuḥ prāha jiṣṇuṁ khageśvaram

—battered, went there for refuge to Hari, their protector. At that moment Vishnu spoke to Jishnu, the lord of birds (Garuda):

Verse 45 (padma.1.75.45)

adhunā gaccha daityasya saṁmukhaṁ raṇamūrdhani | nāśāya satatastūrṇaṁ gatastasyāṁtikaṁ javāt

'Now go swiftly to the very front of that demon in the height of the battle, ceaselessly, for his destruction.' He went to him at once, with speed.

Verse 46 (padma.1.75.46)

sarathaṁ mārgaṇairbhitvā viṣṇumārodhayajjavam | rathasya saṁmukhe daitya uvāca viṣṇumavyayam

Piercing him along with his chariot with arrows, Garuda swiftly bore Vishnu to block his path. Before the chariot the demon spoke to imperishable Vishnu:

Verse 47 (padma.1.75.47)

anya sṛṣṭiṁ karomyadya hatvā tvāṁ ca sanirjjaram | tato viṣṇuruvācedaṁ garjaṁtaṁ daityapuṁgavam

'Today, having slain you along with the immortals, I shall create another creation!' Then Vishnu spoke thus to that roaring bull among demons:

Verse 48 (padma.1.75.48)

śaktastvaṁ sparddhane pāpa yadi yuddhe sthiro bhava | tataḥ śaraśataireva jaghāna viṣṇumavyayam

'If you are truly capable in this contest, O sinner, then stand firm in battle!' Then he struck imperishable Vishnu with hundreds of arrows.

Verse 49 (padma.1.75.49)

asaṁbhrāṁtaḥ sa ciccheda yamadaṁḍanibhānśarān | punaḥ śarasahasrāṇi prerayāmāsa taṁ raṇe

Unshaken, Vishnu cut down those arrows resembling the staff of Yama, and again sent forth thousands of arrows at him in that battle.

Verse 50 (padma.1.75.50)

tāṁśca chitvā śaraiḥ śauristaṁ ca vivyādha mārgaṇaiḥ | pragauravādahāryābhaiḥ saṁsparśādbāḍavānalaiḥ

Cutting those down as well, Shauri (Vishnu) pierced him with arrows of great weight, unbearable, whose touch was like the submarine fire—

Verse 51 (padma.1.75.51)

śaraiśca bhedakaistīkṣṇaiḥ khagamaiśca manojavaiḥ | lāghavātkeśavāstrasya tūlaśuṣkatṛṇopamaiḥ

—with piercing arrows, sharp, winged, swift as the mind, so light by the skill of Keshava's weapon-craft that they seemed mere cotton-fluff or dry grass.

Verse 52 (padma.1.75.52)

haimaiḥ śarasahasraistu tāḍito daityapuṁgavaḥ | bādhayābhyarditaḥ kruddho dhṛtvā śikhariṇaṁ raṇe

Struck by thousands of golden-shafted arrows, that bull among demons, tormented and enraged, seized a mountain peak in that battle—

Verse 53 (padma.1.75.53)

jaghāna mādhavaṁ vegāddhiraṇyākṣo mahābalaḥ | taṁ ca saṁcūrṇayāmāsa gadayā līlayā hariḥ

—and mighty Hiranyaksha hurled it swiftly at Madhava; but Hari shattered it to powder with his mace, as if in mere play.

Verse 54 (padma.1.75.54)

evaṁ parvatasāhasraṁ pātitaṁ tu krameṇa hi | tathaiva lāghavāccūrṇaṁ hariṇā dānavāriṇā

In this way a thousand mountains were hurled one after another, and each was likewise crushed to powder with ease by Hari, the enemy of the danavas.

Verse 55 (padma.1.75.55)

punarbāhusahasrāṇi kṛtvāsau dānavottamaḥ | śaraiḥ śaktibhiratyugraiḥ śūlaiḥ paraśukādibhiḥ

Then that foremost of the danavas, taking on a thousand arms, assailed him with arrows, exceedingly fierce spears, tridents, axes, and the like—

Verse 56 (padma.1.75.56)

vavarṣa bahubhirviṣṇuṁ krodhāviṣṭena cetasā | tāṁstu tenaiva prahitāṁściccheda surasattamaḥ

—raining them down in abundance upon Vishnu, his mind overcome with rage; but that best of gods cut down all those very missiles hurled at him.

Verse 57 (padma.1.75.57)

śarairdīptairmahāghorairasurāṇāṁ bhayaṁkaraiḥ | vivyādha sarvagātreṣu śaṁbhuśūlopamaiśśaraiḥ

With blazing, exceedingly terrible arrows, dreadful even to demons, resembling the very trident of Shambhu, he pierced him through in every limb.

Verse 58 (padma.1.75.58)

dānavādhipatiḥ saṁkhye hyavyayo harirīśvaraḥ | sa ca kaśmalatāṁ gatvā sarvaśaktimanuttamām

Struck by the imperishable Lord Hari in that battle, the lord of the danavas fell into utter faintness; then, seizing his own mightiest weapon—

Verse 59 (padma.1.75.59)

kālajihvopamāṁ ghorāmaṣṭaghaṁṭāsamanvitām | harerurasi pīne ca vidrutyā pātayaddrutam

—terrible as the very tongue of Death, fitted with eight bells, he swiftly hurled it upon Hari's broad chest.

Verse 60 (padma.1.75.60)

śuśubhe sa suraśreṣṭhastaḍittvatsāndrameghavat | tataśca cukruśurdaityā jayeti sādhuvādinaḥ

That best of gods shone forth under the blow like a dense raincloud lit by lightning; and then the demons cried out 'Victory!' in praise.

Verse 61 (padma.1.75.61)

tataścakraṁ daityasainye dānavārirvyasarjayat | teṣāṁ śirāṁsi saṁcchidya mādhavaṁ punarāgamat

Then the enemy of the danavas released his discus among the demon army; severing their heads, it returned again to Madhava.

Verse 62 (padma.1.75.62)

sa daityaṁ śaktipātena pātayāmāsa vai raṇe | cirātsaṁjñāṁ samālaṁbya vahnibāṇena keśavam

With a blow of his spear he felled the demon in that very battle; but after a long while, regaining his senses, the demon struck Keshava with a fire-arrow.

Verse 63 (padma.1.75.63)

nijaghāna raṇe kruddho hariḥ kauberamākṣipat | tato mumoca māyāstraṁ cāsuraṁ cātidāruṇam

In wrath Hari struck him down in battle, hurling at him the weapon of Kubera; then the demon released his weapon of illusion, exceedingly terrible.

Verse 64 (padma.1.75.64)

siṁhavyāghralulāyāṁśca tadvaddvipa sarīsṛpān | jaghāna samare viṣṇuṁ hiraṇyākṣaḥ pratāpavān

Conjuring lions, tigers, buffaloes, and likewise elephants and serpents, mighty Hiranyaksha assailed Vishnu in that battle.

Verse 65 (padma.1.75.65)

tato māyāstrasaṁbhūtānśastrāstraughānraṇe hariḥ | praciccheda śaraireva śūlenaivamatāḍayat

Then Hari cut down with his own arrows that flood of weapons born of the illusion-weapon, and struck him with his trident.

Verse 66 (padma.1.75.66)

sa vihvalita sarvāṁgastatkṣaṇaṁ lohitokṣitaḥ | vicakarṣa haranviṣṇurasṛgviplutavigrahaḥ

Reeling in every limb, drenched instantly in blood, his body flooded with gore, he wrenched that trident away from Vishnu who had struck him.

Verse 67 (padma.1.75.67)

tacchūlaṁ ca tribhirbāṇaiḥ pravivyādha surādhipaḥ | varūthaṁ sadhvajaṁ ketuṁ rathaṁ caivātapatrakam

The lord of the gods then pierced that very trident with three arrows; he also destroyed his chariot's rim, banner, standard, and parasol.

Verse 68 (padma.1.75.68)

yaṁtāraṁ ca praciccheda daśabhiśca hariḥ śaraiḥ | pātite ca rathe daityaḥ saṁplutyātha rathaṁ param

Hari cut down his charioteer as well, with ten arrows. His chariot destroyed, the demon leapt onto another chariot—

Verse 69 (padma.1.75.69)

—that mighty lord of the demons mounted it and faced him again. Then a most terrible battle ensued, one that made the hair stand on end.

Verse 70 (padma.1.75.70)

hiraṇyākṣasya ca harerlokavismāpanaṁ mahat | astrayuddhaṁ tathānyonyaṁ kṛtapratikṛtaṁ ca tat

The great duel of weapons between Hiranyaksha and Hari astonished all the worlds, as each answered the other's every blow with a counter-blow.

Verse 71 (padma.1.75.71)

tato niyuddhe satataṁ divyavarṣaśataṁ gatam | tato daityo mahāsatvo vavṛdhe vāmano yathā

Then in that unceasing combat a hundred divine years passed; and then the demon, of great might, began to grow, as once, conversely, the Dwarf had grown.

Verse 72 (padma.1.75.72)

mukhena jagrāha ruṣā trailokyaṁ sacarācaram | bhūmaṁḍalaṁ samuddhṛtya viveśa ca rasātalam

In his fury he seized the three worlds, with all that moves and does not move, in his very mouth; then, tearing up the disc of the earth, he entered the netherworld, Rasatala.

Verse 73 (padma.1.75.73)

śeṣāśca viviśurdaityāstamanu prītisaṁyutāḥ | tato viṣṇurmahātejā jñātvā daityabalaṁ mahat

The rest of the demons, filled with joy, followed him down. Then Vishnu, of great splendor, knowing the demon's mighty strength—

Verse 74 (padma.1.75.74)

dadhāra rūpaṁ vārāhaṁ daityarājajighāṁsayā | dhṛtvā kroḍatanuṁ viṣṇurviveśa tamanudrutam

—assumed the form of a boar, desiring to slay the king of the demons; and Vishnu, taking that boar-body, swiftly followed after him.

Verse 75 (padma.1.75.75)

tatra gatvā rasāmūle rasātalagatāṁ mahīm | dṛṣṭvā svadaṁṣṭrayordadhre lokādhārāṁ vasuṁdharām

Going there to the very root of the netherworld, and seeing the earth sunk into Rasatala, he raised up upon his own tusks the earth, the support of all the worlds.

Verse 76 (padma.1.75.76)

tāṁ dhṛtvā gacchatastasya viṣṇoramitatejasaḥ | samājagāma daityeṁdro dhṛṣṭaṁ vāgbhistudannanu

As Vishnu of boundless splendor bore up the earth and made his way back, the lord of the demons came upon him, boldly taunting him with harsh words.

Verse 77 (padma.1.75.77)

māyākroḍatanurviṣṇurdurvacāṁsi sahanruṣā | jalopari dadhāremāṁ dharāṁ bhūdhara eva ca

Vishnu, in his illusion-wrought boar-body, bearing that abuse with fury, held up the earth above the waters, firm as a very mountain.

Verse 78 (padma.1.75.78)

tasyāṁ nyasya svasatvaṁ ca sa cakāra tadācalām | tataḥ paścātsa saṁlagno daityarāṭsamupasthitaḥ

Placing his own strength within it, he made it steady and unmoving. Then after that, the king of the demons, closing upon him, came before him.

Verse 79 (padma.1.75.79)

krodhena mahatāviṣṭo jaghāna gadayā harim | māyayā sūkaro viṣṇustāṁ gadāṁ samavaṁcayat

Overcome with great wrath, he struck at Hari with his mace; but Vishnu, in his illusion as the Boar, evaded that mace.

Verse 80 (padma.1.75.80)

yogayukto yathā mṛtyuṁ kaumodakyāhanacca tam | tataḥ punā ruṣāviṣṭo hiraṇyākṣo mahābalaḥ

United with his power, as if striking Death itself, he struck him with his mace Kaumodaki. Then again, overcome with fury, mighty Hiranyaksha—

Verse 81 (padma.1.75.81)

muṣṭinā prāharaddevaṁ dakṣiṇe tu bhuje prabhoḥ | evaṁ yuddhaṁ mahāghoraṁ savyāsavyaṁ gatāgatam

—struck the Lord's right arm with his fist. Thus that most terrible battle continued, with blows to left and right, advancing and retreating,

Verse 82 (padma.1.75.82)

paribhramaṇavikṣepaṁ kṛtānukaraṇaṁ tathā | tato brahmādayo devā yuddhaṁ paśyaṁti khe sthitāḥ

—with circling movements and feints, each matching the other's every move. Then Brahma and the other gods, standing in the sky, watched that battle,

Verse 83 (padma.1.75.83)

svasti prajābhyo devebhya ṛṣibhyaśceti cābruvan | ūcuśca devadeveśaṁ viṣṇuṁ vārāharūpiṇam

and cried, 'May it be well with all creatures, with the gods, and with the sages!' And they spoke to Vishnu, the God of gods in his form as the Boar:

Verse 84 (padma.1.75.84)

mā krīḍa bālavaddeva jahyamuṁ devakaṁṭakam | tato viṣṇurmahātejā māyāvārāharūpadhṛt

'O God, do not toy with him like a child at play — slay this thorn in the side of the gods!' Then Vishnu, of great splendor, in his illusion-wrought boar-form,

Verse 85 (padma.1.75.85)

brahmādyanumatiṁ prāpya cakraṁ prākṣipadulbaṇam | sahasrasūryasaṁkāśaṁ sahasrāraṁ mahāprabham

—having received the assent of Brahma and the others, hurled forth his fearsome discus, radiant as a thousand suns, thousand-spoked, of immense splendor,

Verse 86 (padma.1.75.86)

daityāṁtakaraṇaṁ raudraṁ pralayāgnisamaprabham | taccakraṁ viṣṇunā muktaṁ hiraṇyākṣaṁ mahābalam

—the very destroyer of demons, terrible, blazing like the fire of universal dissolution. That discus, released by Vishnu, struck mighty Hiranyaksha—

Verse 87 (padma.1.75.87)

cakāra bhasmasātsadyo brahmādīnāṁ ca paśyatām | daityāṁtakaraṇaṁ raudraṁ cakraṁ cāgamadacyutam

—and instantly reduced him to ashes before the very eyes of Brahma and the others; and that terrible demon-destroying discus returned again to imperishable Vishnu.

Verse 88 (padma.1.75.88)

tato brahmādayo devāḥ śakramukhyāśca lokapāḥ | dṛṣṭvā ca vijayaṁ viṣṇoḥ stuvaṁti sma samāgatāḥ

Then Brahma and the other gods, together with Shakra and the guardians of the world, seeing Vishnu's victory, gathered together and praised him.

Verse 89 (padma.1.75.89)

devā ūcuḥ | natāḥ sma viṣṇuṁ jagadādibhūtaṁ surāsureṁdraṁ jagatāṁ prapālakam | yannābhipadmātkila padmayonirbabhūva taṁ vai śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ smaḥ

The gods said: We bow to Vishnu, the primal source of the universe, lord of gods and demons, protector of all the worlds; from whose lotus-navel the lotus-born one (Brahma) himself arose — to him alone we have come for refuge.

Verse 90 (padma.1.75.90)

namonamo matsyavapurddharāya namostu te kacchaparūpadhāriṇe | namaḥ prakurmaśca nṛsiṁharūpiṇe tathā punarvāmanarūpiṇe namaḥ

Homage, homage to you who bore the form of the Fish! Homage to you who bear the form of the Tortoise! Homage we offer to you in the form of the Man-Lion, and again homage to you in the form of the Dwarf.

Verse 91 (padma.1.75.91)

namostu te kṣatravināśanāya rāmāya rāmāya daśāsyanāśine | pralaṁbahaṁtre śitivāsase namo namostu buddhāya ca daityamohine

Homage to you, destroyer of the Kshatriyas! Homage to Rama, slayer of the ten-headed one! Homage to the slayer of Pralamba, clad in dark garments! Homage, homage to the Buddha, deluder of the demons!

Verse 92 (padma.1.75.92)

mlecchāṁtakāyāpi ca kalkināmne namaḥ punaḥ kroḍavapurdharāya | jagaddhitārthaṁ ca yugeyuge bhavānbibharti rūpaṁ tvasurābhavāya

Homage again to you named Kalki, destroyer of the barbarians! And homage to you who bear the form of the Boar! For the good of the world, in age after age, you assume these forms, for the undoing of the demons.

Verse 93 (padma.1.75.93)

niṣūdito'yaṁ hyadhunā kila tvayā daityo hiraṇyākṣa iti pragalbhaḥ | yaśceṁdramukhyānkilalokapālānsaṁhelayā caiva tiraścakāra

This very demon, arrogant Hiranyaksha, has now indeed been slain by you — he who once, with utter contempt, humbled Indra and the other foremost guardians of the world.

Verse 94 (padma.1.75.94)

sa vai tvayā devahitārthameva nipātito devavara prasīda | tvamasya viśvasya visargakartā brāhmeṇa rūpeṇa ca devadeva

He has been struck down by you solely for the good of the gods — O best of gods, be gracious! You are the creator of this universe, in your form as Brahma, O God of gods.

Verse 95 (padma.1.75.95)

pātā tvamevāsya yugeyuge ca rūpāṇi dhatse sumanoharāṇi | tvameva kālāgniharaśca bhūtvā viśvaṁ kṣayaṁ neṣyasi cāṁtakāle

You alone are its protector, age after age, taking on forms of surpassing beauty; and you alone, becoming the fire of time and Hara, will lead the universe to its dissolution at the time of the end.

Verse 96 (padma.1.75.96)

ato bhavāneva ca viśvakāraṇaṁ na te paraṁ jīvamajīvamīśa | yatkiṁca bhūtaṁ ca bhaviṣyarūpaṁ pravarttamānaṁ ca tathaiva rūpam

Therefore you alone are the cause of the universe; there is nothing, whether living or lifeless, O Lord, beyond you. Whatever has been, whatever is to come, and whatever exists in the present—

Verse 97 (padma.1.75.97)

sarvaṁ tvamevāsi carācarākhyaṁ na bhāti viśvaṁ tvadṛte ca kiṁcit | astīti nāstīti ca bhedaniṣṭhaṁ tvayyeva bhātaṁ sadasatsvarūpam

—all of it is your very form. You alone are all this, called the moving and the unmoving; without you nothing of this universe shines forth at all. That which rests on the distinction of 'is' and 'is not' shines forth in you alone.

Verse 98 (padma.1.75.98)

Therefore, O God, no one of immature understanding is able to know you at all, except one wholly devoted to your feet. For this reason we have come for refuge to you, the refuge of all.

Verse 99 (padma.1.75.99)

vyāsa uvāca | tato viṣṇuḥ prasannātmā uvāca tridivaukasaḥ | tuṣṭosmi devā bhadraṁ vo yuṣmatstotreṇa sāṁpratam

Vyasa said: Then Vishnu, his heart well pleased, spoke to the dwellers of heaven: 'I am well pleased, O gods; may good come to you, through this hymn of yours, even now.'

Verse 100 (padma.1.75.100)

'Whoever recites this Hymn of Victory with devotion and reverence — for him, O gods, nothing in all the three worlds shall remain unattainable.'

Verse 101 (padma.1.75.101)

gavāṁ śatasahasrasya samyagdattasya yatphalam | tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti kīrtanācchravaṇānnaraḥ

'Whatever merit is gained by the proper gift of a hundred thousand cows, that same merit a man obtains by reciting or hearing this hymn.'

Verse 102 (padma.1.75.102)

sarvakāmapradaṁ nityaṁ devadevasya kīrtanam | ataḥ paraṁ mahājñānaṁ na bhūtaṁ na bhaviṣyati

'The recitation of the God of gods ever grants all desires; beyond this there is no greater wisdom, has never been, and never shall be.'
