Bhrigu's Austerity and the Continuing Circuit of Tirthas
Verse 1 (padma.3.20.1)
नारद उवाच । ततस्तु नरकं गच्छेत्स्नानं तत्र समाचरेत् । स्नातमात्रो नरस्तत्र नरकं तत्र पश्यति
nārada uvāca tatastu narakaṁ gacchetsnānaṁ tatra samācaret snātamātro narastatra narakaṁ tatra paśyati
Narada said: Then one should go to Naraka-tirtha and perform the ritual bath there; merely by bathing there, a man beholds hell itself there.
Verse 2 (padma.3.20.2)
अस्यतीर्थस्य माहात्म्यं शृणु त्वं पांडुनंदन । तस्मिंस्तीर्थे तु राजेंद्र यान्यस्थीनि विनिक्षिपेत्
asyatīrthasya māhātmyaṁ śṛṇu tvaṁ pāṁḍunaṁdana tasmiṁstīrthe tu rājeṁdra yānyasthīni vinikṣipet
Hear the glory of this tirtha, O joy of the Pandus. O lord of kings, whatever bones one casts into that tirtha,
Verse 3 (padma.3.20.3)
विलयं यांति सर्वाणि रूपवान्जायते नरः । गोतीर्थं तु ततो गच्छेद्दृष्ट्वा पापात्प्रमुच्यते
vilayaṁ yāṁti sarvāṇi rūpavānjāyate naraḥ gotīrthaṁ tu tato gaccheddṛṣṭvā pāpātpramucyate
all of them dissolve away, and the man attains a handsome form. Then one should go to Go-tirtha; by its sight, one is freed from sin.
Verse 4 (padma.3.20.4)
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र कपिलातीर्थमुत्तमम् । तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्
tato gaccheta rājeṁdra kapilātīrthamuttamam tatra snātvā naro rājangosahasraphalaṁ labhet
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the excellent Kapila-tirtha; having bathed there, O king, a man obtains the fruit of a thousand cows.
Verse 5 (padma.3.20.5)
ज्येष्ठमासे तु संप्राप्ते चतुर्दश्यां विशेषतः । तत्रोपोष्य नरो भक्त्या कपिलां यः प्रयच्छति
jyeṣṭhamāse tu saṁprāpte caturdaśyāṁ viśeṣataḥ tatropoṣya naro bhaktyā kapilāṁ yaḥ prayacchati
When the month of Jyeshtha arrives, especially on the fourteenth, having fasted there with devotion, whoever gives a tawny cow —
Verse 6 (padma.3.20.6)
घृतेन दीपं प्रज्वाल्य घृतेन स्नापयेच्छिवम् । सघृतं श्रीफलं दत्वा कृत्वा चांते प्रदक्षिणम्
ghṛtena dīpaṁ prajvālya ghṛtena snāpayecchivam saghṛtaṁ śrīphalaṁ datvā kṛtvā cāṁte pradakṣiṇam
having lit a lamp with ghee, bathed Shiva with ghee, offered the wood-apple together with ghee, and performed circumambulation at the end —
Verse 7 (padma.3.20.7)
घंटाभरणसंयुक्तां कपिलां यः प्रयच्छति । शिवतुल्यो नरो भूत्वा न चेह जायते पुनः
ghaṁṭābharaṇasaṁyuktāṁ kapilāṁ yaḥ prayacchati śivatulyo naro bhūtvā na ceha jāyate punaḥ
whoever gives a tawny cow adorned with a bell — becoming equal to Shiva, he is not born again here.
Verse 8 (padma.3.20.8)
अंगारकदिने प्राप्ते चतुर्थ्यां तु विशेषतः । स्नापयित्वा शिवं भक्त्या ब्राह्मणेभ्यस्तु भोजनम्
aṁgārakadine prāpte caturthyāṁ tu viśeṣataḥ snāpayitvā śivaṁ bhaktyā brāhmaṇebhyastu bhojanam
On the day of Mars, especially on the fourth lunar day, having bathed Shiva with devotion, one should feed brahmins.
Verse 9 (padma.3.20.9)
अंगारकनवम्यां तु अमावस्यां तथैव च । स्नापयेत्तत्र यत्नेन रूपवान्सुभगो भवेत्
aṁgārakanavamyāṁ tu amāvasyāṁ tathaiva ca snāpayettatra yatnena rūpavānsubhago bhavet
On the ninth day of Mars, and likewise on the new moon, one should bathe him there with effort — one becomes handsome and fortunate.
Verse 10 (padma.3.20.10)
घृतेन स्नापयेल्लिंगं पूजयेद्भक्तितो द्विजान् । पुष्पकेण विमानेन सहस्रैः परिवारितः
ghṛtena snāpayelliṁgaṁ pūjayedbhaktito dvijān puṣpakeṇa vimānena sahasraiḥ parivāritaḥ
One should bathe the linga with ghee and worship brahmins with devotion; in a Pushpaka celestial chariot, surrounded by thousands,
Verse 11 (padma.3.20.11)
शैवं पदमवाप्नोति नात्र चाभिगतं भवेत् । अक्षयं मोदते कालं यथा रुद्रस्तथैव च
śaivaṁ padamavāpnoti nātra cābhigataṁ bhavet akṣayaṁ modate kālaṁ yathā rudrastathaiva ca
he attains the state of Shiva, and rebirth here does not occur. He rejoices for an imperishable span of time, just like Rudra himself.
Verse 12 (padma.3.20.12)
यदा तु कर्मसंयोगान्मर्त्यलोकमुपागतः । राजा भवति धर्मिष्ठो रूपवान्जायते बली
yadā tu karmasaṁyogānmartyalokamupāgataḥ rājā bhavati dharmiṣṭho rūpavānjāyate balī
When, through the working of past deeds, he returns to the world of mortals, he becomes a righteous king, handsome and mighty.
Verse 13 (padma.3.20.13)
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र ऋषितीर्थमनुत्तमम् । तृणबिंदुऋषिर्नाम शापदग्धो व्यवस्थितः
tato gaccheta rājeṁdra ṛṣitīrthamanuttamam tṛṇabiṁduṛṣirnāma śāpadagdho vyavasthitaḥ
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the unsurpassed Rishi-tirtha; there a sage named Trinabindu, burned by a curse, abode.
Verse 14 (padma.3.20.14)
तस्यतीर्थप्रभावेण पापमुक्तोऽभवद्द्विजः । ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र गणेश्वरमनुत्तमम्
tasyatīrthaprabhāveṇa pāpamukto'bhavaddvijaḥ tato gaccheta rājeṁdra gaṇeśvaramanuttamam
By the power of that tirtha, that twice-born was freed from sin. Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the unsurpassed Ganeshvara,
Verse 15 (padma.3.20.15)
श्रावणेमासि संप्राप्ते कृष्णपक्षे चतुर्दशीम् । स्नातमात्रो नरस्तत्र रुद्रलोके महीयते
śrāvaṇemāsi saṁprāpte kṛṣṇapakṣe caturdaśīm snātamātro narastatra rudraloke mahīyate
when the month of Shravana arrives, on the fourteenth of the dark fortnight, merely by bathing there, a man is honored in the world of Rudra.
Verse 16 (padma.3.20.16)
पितॄणां तर्पणं कृत्वा मुच्यते च ऋणत्रयात् । गणेश्वरसमीपे तु गंगावदनमुत्तमम्
pitṝṇāṁ tarpaṇaṁ kṛtvā mucyate ca ṛṇatrayāt gaṇeśvarasamīpe tu gaṁgāvadanamuttamam
Having performed the tarpana for the ancestors, he is freed from the three debts. Near Ganeshvara is the excellent Gangavadana,
Verse 17 (padma.3.20.17)
अकामो वा सकामो वा तत्र स्नात्वा तु मानवः । आजन्मजनितैः पापैर्मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
akāmo vā sakāmo vā tatra snātvā tu mānavaḥ ājanmajanitaiḥ pāpairmucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ
whether desiring some end or free from desire, a man, having bathed there, is freed from sins accumulated from birth — there is no doubt.
Verse 18 (padma.3.20.18)
सर्वदा पर्वदिवसे स्नानं तत्र समाचरेत् । पितॄणां तर्पणं कृत्वा मुच्यते च ऋणत्रयात्
sarvadā parvadivase snānaṁ tatra samācaret pitṝṇāṁ tarpaṇaṁ kṛtvā mucyate ca ṛṇatrayāt
One should always perform the ritual bath there on sacred days; having performed the tarpana for the ancestors, one is freed from the three debts.
Verse 19 (padma.3.20.19)
प्रयागे यत्फलं दृष्टं शंकरेण महात्मना । तदेव निखिलं पुण्यं गंगाराह्वर्कसंगमे
prayāge yatphalaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ śaṁkareṇa mahātmanā tadeva nikhilaṁ puṇyaṁ gaṁgārāhvarkasaṁgame
The fruit that was witnessed at Prayaga by the great-souled Shankara — that same complete merit is found at the confluence of the Ganga and the sun.
Verse 20 (padma.3.20.20)
तस्यैवं पश्चिमे स्थाने समीपेनातिदूरतः । दशाश्वमेधिकं नाम त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्
tasyaivaṁ paścime sthāne samīpenātidūrataḥ daśāśvamedhikaṁ nāma triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam
West of that very place, neither very near nor very far, is the tirtha renowned in the three worlds as Dashashvamedhika.
Verse 21 (padma.3.20.21)
उपोष्य रजनीमेकां मासि भाद्रपदे तथा । अमावस्यां नरः स्नात्वा व्रजेद्वै यत्र शंकरः
upoṣya rajanīmekāṁ māsi bhādrapade tathā amāvasyāṁ naraḥ snātvā vrajedvai yatra śaṁkaraḥ
Having fasted a single night, in the month of Bhadrapada, on the new moon, a man, having bathed, should proceed to where Shankara presides.
Verse 22 (padma.3.20.22)
सर्वदा पर्वदिवसे स्नानं तत्र समाचरेत् । पितॄणां तर्पणं कृत्वा अश्वमेधफलं लभेत्
sarvadā parvadivase snānaṁ tatra samācaret pitṝṇāṁ tarpaṇaṁ kṛtvā aśvamedhaphalaṁ labhet
One should always perform the ritual bath there on sacred days; having performed the tarpana for the ancestors, one obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha.
Verse 23 (padma.3.20.23)
दशाश्वमेधात्पश्चिमतो भृगुर्ब्राह्मणसत्तमः । दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं तु ईश्वरं पर्युपासत
daśāśvamedhātpaścimato bhṛgurbrāhmaṇasattamaḥ divyaṁ varṣasahasraṁ tu īśvaraṁ paryupāsata
West of Dashashvamedha, Bhrigu, foremost of brahmins, worshipped Ishvara for a thousand divine years.
Verse 24 (padma.3.20.24)
वल्मीकावस्थितश्चासौ दक्षिणं च निकेतनम् । आश्चर्यं च महज्जातमुमायाः शंकरस्य च
valmīkāvasthitaścāsau dakṣiṇaṁ ca niketanam āścaryaṁ ca mahajjātamumāyāḥ śaṁkarasya ca
He abode there in an anthill, facing the southern shrine; and there a great wonder occurred, concerning Uma and Shankara.
Verse 25 (padma.3.20.25)
गौरी तु पृच्छते देवं कोयमत्र तु संस्थितः । देवो वा दानवो वाथ कथयस्व महेश्वर
gaurī tu pṛcchate devaṁ koyamatra tu saṁsthitaḥ devo vā dānavo vātha kathayasva maheśvara
Gauri asked the god: 'Who is this one, established here? A god or a demon? Tell me, O Maheshvara.'
Verse 26 (padma.3.20.26)
ईश्वर उवाच । भृगुर्नाम द्विजश्रेष्ठ ऋषीणां प्रवरो मुनिः । ध्यायते मां समाधिस्थो वरं प्रार्थयते प्रिये
īśvara uvāca bhṛgurnāma dvijaśreṣṭha ṛṣīṇāṁ pravaro muniḥ dhyāyate māṁ samādhistho varaṁ prārthayate priye
Ishvara said: 'A brahmin named Bhrigu, foremost among sages, my dear, absorbed in deep contemplation, meditates upon me, praying for a boon.'
Verse 27 (padma.3.20.27)
तत्र प्रहसिता देवी ईश्वरं प्रत्यभाषत । धूमावर्तशिखा जाता ततोऽद्यापि न तुष्यसि । दुराराध्योऽसि तेन त्वं नात्र कार्या विचारणा
tatra prahasitā devī īśvaraṁ pratyabhāṣata dhūmāvartaśikhā jātā tato'dyāpi na tuṣyasi durārādhyo'si tena tvaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
Then the goddess, laughing, replied to Ishvara: 'A whirl of smoke has arisen, and still you are not satisfied — you are indeed hard to please; there is no need to deliberate over this.'
Verse 28 (padma.3.20.28)
देव उवाच । न ज्ञायसे महादेवि अयं क्रोधेन चेष्टितः । दर्शयामि यथातथ्यं प्रियं ते च करोम्यहम्
deva uvāca na jñāyase mahādevi ayaṁ krodhena ceṣṭitaḥ darśayāmi yathātathyaṁ priyaṁ te ca karomyaham
The god said: 'You do not truly know, O great goddess; this is an act of my testing anger; I shall show you the truth, and I shall do what pleases you.'
Verse 29 (padma.3.20.29)
स्मारितो देवदेवेन धर्मरूपो वृषस्तदा । स्मरणादेव देवस्य वृषः शीघ्रमुपस्थितः
smārito devadevena dharmarūpo vṛṣastadā smaraṇādeva devasya vṛṣaḥ śīghramupasthitaḥ
Called to mind by the God of gods, the bull of righteous form was then remembered; by the very act of the god's remembrance, that bull swiftly appeared there.
Verse 30 (padma.3.20.30)
प्राहासौ मानुषीं वाचमादेशो दीयतां प्रभो । वल्मीकैश्छादितो विप्र एनं भूमौ निपातय
prāhāsau mānuṣīṁ vācamādeśo dīyatāṁ prabho valmīkaiśchādito vipra enaṁ bhūmau nipātaya
It spoke in a human voice: 'Let your command be given, O Lord.' 'This brahmin, covered by the anthill — cast him down upon the ground.'
Verse 31 (padma.3.20.31)
योगस्थस्तु ततो ध्यायंस्ततस्तेन निपातितः । तत्क्षणात्क्रोधसंतप्तो हस्तमुत्क्षिप्तवान्वृषम्
yogasthastu tato dhyāyaṁstatastena nipātitaḥ tatkṣaṇātkrodhasaṁtapto hastamutkṣiptavānvṛṣam
That sage, absorbed in yoga, meditating, was then cast down by it; at that very instant, burning with anger, he raised his hand against the bull.
Verse 32 (padma.3.20.32)
एवं संभाषमाणस्तु कुत्र गच्छसि भो वृष । अद्य त्वामथ पाप्मानं प्रत्यक्षं हन्म्यहं वृष
evaṁ saṁbhāṣamāṇastu kutra gacchasi bho vṛṣa adya tvāmatha pāpmānaṁ pratyakṣaṁ hanmyahaṁ vṛṣa
Thus speaking: 'Where are you going, O bull? Today I shall slay you, sinful creature, before my very eyes!'
Verse 33 (padma.3.20.33)
धर्षितस्तु तदा विप्रो ह्यंतरिक्षं गतं वृषम् । आकाशे प्रेक्षते भूय एतदद्भुतमुत्तमम्
dharṣitastu tadā vipro hyaṁtarikṣaṁ gataṁ vṛṣam ākāśe prekṣate bhūya etadadbhutamuttamam
That brahmin, thus assaulted, seeing the bull go up into the sky, gazed again into the heavens — this was a supreme wonder.
Verse 34 (padma.3.20.34)
ततः प्रहसिते रुद्रे ऋषिरग्रे व्यवस्थितः । तृतीयं लोचनं दृष्ट्वा वैलक्ष्यात्पतितो भुवि
tataḥ prahasite rudre ṛṣiragre vyavasthitaḥ tṛtīyaṁ locanaṁ dṛṣṭvā vailakṣyātpatito bhuvi
Then, as Rudra laughed, the sage, standing before him, having seen the third eye, fell to the ground out of embarrassment.
Verse 35 (padma.3.20.35)
प्रणम्य दंडवद्भूमौ स्तुवते परमेश्वरम् । प्रणिपत्य भूतनाथं भवोद्भवं त्वामहं दिव्यरूपम् । भवभीतो भुवनपते भूतं विज्ञापये किंचित्
praṇamya daṁḍavadbhūmau stuvate parameśvaram praṇipatya bhūtanāthaṁ bhavodbhavaṁ tvāmahaṁ divyarūpam bhavabhīto bhuvanapate bhūtaṁ vijñāpaye kiṁcit
Having bowed prostrate upon the ground, he praised the Supreme Lord: 'Having bowed to the Lord of beings, source of existence, to you of divine form, I, afraid of worldly existence, O Lord of the worlds, make known to you what has occurred.'
Verse 36 (padma.3.20.36)
त्वद्गुणनिकरान्वक्तुं कः शक्तो भवति मानुषो नाथ । वासुकिरयं हि कदाचिद्वदनसहस्रं भवेद्यस्य
tvadguṇanikarānvaktuṁ kaḥ śakto bhavati mānuṣo nātha vāsukirayaṁ hi kadācidvadanasahasraṁ bhavedyasya
'O Lord, what mortal is capable of speaking the fullness of your virtues? Even this Vasuki, whose mouths at times number a thousand,'
Verse 37 (padma.3.20.37)
भक्त्या तवापि शंकरभुवनपते त्वत्स्तुतौ तु मुखरस्य । वंद्य क्षमस्व भवन्प्रसीद मे तव चरणपतितस्य
bhaktyā tavāpi śaṁkarabhuvanapate tvatstutau tu mukharasya vaṁdya kṣamasva bhavanprasīda me tava caraṇapatitasya
'even he, O Shankara, Lord of the worlds, out of devotion to you, is rendered mute in praising you. O venerable one, forgive me, be gracious — I am fallen at your feet.'
Verse 38 (padma.3.20.38)
सत्वं रजस्तमस्त्वं स्थित्युत्पत्तौ विनाशने देव । त्वां मुक्त्वा भुवनपते भुवनेश्वर नैव दैवतं किंचित्
satvaṁ rajastamastvaṁ sthityutpattau vināśane deva tvāṁ muktvā bhuvanapate bhuvaneśvara naiva daivataṁ kiṁcit
'You are sattva, you are rajas, you are tamas, O god, in maintenance, origin, and destruction. Apart from you, O Lord of the worlds, O Lord of the universe, there is truly no other deity.'
Verse 39 (padma.3.20.39)
यमनियमयज्ञदानैर्वेदाभ्यासावधारणोद्योगात् । त्वद्भक्तेः सर्वमिदं नार्हति कलासहस्रांशेन
yamaniyamayajñadānairvedābhyāsāvadhāraṇodyogāt tvadbhakteḥ sarvamidaṁ nārhati kalāsahasrāṁśena
'Through restraints and observances, sacrifices and gifts, through the study and effort of mastering the Vedas — all of this is not worth even a thousandth part of devotion to you.'
Verse 40 (padma.3.20.40)
उत्कृष्टरसरसायनखड्गांजनपादुकादि सिद्धिर्वा । चिह्नानि भवत्प्रणतानां दृश्यंत इह जन्मनि प्रकटम्
utkṛṣṭarasarasāyanakhaḍgāṁjanapādukādi siddhirvā cihnāni bhavatpraṇatānāṁ dṛśyaṁta iha janmani prakaṭam
'The attainment of the finest elixirs, of the sword, collyrium, sandals, and the like — the marks of those who have bowed to you are seen plainly manifest in this very birth.'
Verse 41 (padma.3.20.41)
शाठ्येन नमति यद्यपि ददासि त्वं धर्ममिच्छतां देव । भक्तिर्भवच्छेदकरी मोक्षाय विनिर्मिता नाथ
śāṭhyena namati yadyapi dadāsi tvaṁ dharmamicchatāṁ deva bhaktirbhavacchedakarī mokṣāya vinirmitā nātha
'Even if one bows out of deceit, still, O god, you grant dharma to those who seek dharma; devotion alone is what severs bondage, ordained for liberation, O Lord.'
Verse 42 (padma.3.20.42)
परदारपरस्वरतं परिभवपरिदुःखशोकसंतप्तम् । परवदनवीक्षणपरं परमेश्वर मां परित्राहि
paradāraparasvarataṁ paribhavapariduḥkhaśokasaṁtaptam paravadanavīkṣaṇaparaṁ parameśvara māṁ paritrāhi
'Attached to others' wives and others' wealth, scorched by humiliation, suffering, and grief, intent on gazing at others' faces — O Supreme Lord, save me!'
Verse 43 (padma.3.20.43)
अलीकाभिमानदग्धं क्षणभंगुरविभवविलसितं देव । क्रूरं कुपथाभिमुखं पतितं मां त्राहि देवेश
alīkābhimānadagdhaṁ kṣaṇabhaṁguravibhavavilasitaṁ deva krūraṁ kupathābhimukhaṁ patitaṁ māṁ trāhi deveśa
'Consumed by false pride, delighting in fleeting, momentary glory, cruel, facing the wrong path, fallen — save me, O Lord of gods!'
Verse 44 (padma.3.20.44)
दीनेंद्रियगणसार्थैर्बंधुजनैरेव पूरिता आशा । तुच्छा तथापि शंकर किं मूढं मां विडंबयसि
dīneṁdriyagaṇasārthairbaṁdhujanaireva pūritā āśā tucchā tathāpi śaṁkara kiṁ mūḍhaṁ māṁ viḍaṁbayasi
'My hopes are filled only by wretched sense-organs and kinsmen, yet they are worthless; O Shankara, why do you mock me, a fool, thus?'
Verse 45 (padma.3.20.45)
तृष्णां हरस्व शीघ्रं लक्ष्मीं मां देहि हृदयवासिनीं नित्याम् । छिंधि मदमोहपाशानुत्तारय मां महादेव
tṛṣṇāṁ harasva śīghraṁ lakṣmīṁ māṁ dehi hṛdayavāsinīṁ nityām chiṁdhi madamohapāśānuttāraya māṁ mahādeva
'Swiftly remove my craving; grant me Lakshmi, dwelling eternally in my heart. Cut the bonds of my pride and delusion; carry me across, O Mahadeva.'
Verse 46 (padma.3.20.46)
करुणाभ्युदयं नाम स्तोत्रमिदं सिद्धिदं दिव्यम् । यः पठति भक्तियुक्तस्तस्य तु तुष्येद्भृगोर्यथाहि शिवः
karuṇābhyudayaṁ nāma stotramidaṁ siddhidaṁ divyam yaḥ paṭhati bhaktiyuktastasya tu tuṣyedbhṛgoryathāhi śivaḥ
This hymn named Karunabhyudaya ('The Rising of Compassion') is divine, granting accomplishment; whoever recites it with devotion, for him Shiva becomes pleased, just as he did for Bhrigu.
Verse 47 (padma.3.20.47)
ईश्वर उवाच । अहं तुष्टोस्मि ते विप्र वरं प्रार्थय स्वेप्सितम् । उमया सहितो देवो वरं तस्य हि दापयेत्
īśvara uvāca ahaṁ tuṣṭosmi te vipra varaṁ prārthaya svepsitam umayā sahito devo varaṁ tasya hi dāpayet
Ishvara said: 'I am pleased with you, O brahmin; ask for whatever boon you desire.' The god, together with Uma, was about to grant him that boon.
Verse 48 (padma.3.20.48)
भृगुरुवाच । यदि तुष्टोसि देवेश यदि देयो वरो मम । रुद्रवेदी भवेदेवमेतत्संपादयस्व मे
bhṛguruvāca yadi tuṣṭosi deveśa yadi deyo varo mama rudravedī bhavedevametatsaṁpādayasva me
Bhrigu said: 'O Lord of gods, if you are pleased, if a boon is to be given to me, let there be a Rudra-altar here — grant me this.'
Verse 49 (padma.3.20.49)
ईश्वर उवाच । एवं भवतु विप्रेंद्र क्रोधस्थानं भविष्यति । न पिता पुत्रयोश्चैव एकवाक्यं भविष्यति
īśvara uvāca evaṁ bhavatu vipreṁdra krodhasthānaṁ bhaviṣyati na pitā putrayoścaiva ekavākyaṁ bhaviṣyati
Ishvara said: 'So be it, O lord of brahmins; this shall become a place of contention — here even father and son shall never agree in a single opinion.'
Verse 50 (padma.3.20.50)
तदाप्रभृति ब्रह्माद्याः सर्वे देवाः सकिन्नराः । उपासंतो भृगोस्तीर्थं तुष्टो यत्र महेश्वरः
tadāprabhṛti brahmādyāḥ sarve devāḥ sakinnarāḥ upāsaṁto bhṛgostīrthaṁ tuṣṭo yatra maheśvaraḥ
From that time onward, Brahma and all the gods, together with the kinnaras, worship Bhrigu's tirtha, where Maheshvara became pleased.
Verse 51 (padma.3.20.51)
दर्शनात्तस्य तीर्थस्य सद्यः पापात्प्रमुच्यते । अवशाः स्ववशाश्चापि म्रियंते तत्र जंतवः
darśanāttasya tīrthasya sadyaḥ pāpātpramucyate avaśāḥ svavaśāścāpi mriyaṁte tatra jaṁtavaḥ
By the mere sight of that tirtha, a man is instantly freed from sin. Creatures who die there, whether against their will or of their own will,
Verse 52 (padma.3.20.52)
गुह्यातिगुह्यस्य गतिस्तेषां निःसंशया भवेत् । एतत्क्षेत्रं सुविपुलं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्
guhyātiguhyasya gatisteṣāṁ niḥsaṁśayā bhavet etatkṣetraṁ suvipulaṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam
attain, without doubt, that most secret of destinies. This vast sacred field destroys all sin.
Verse 53 (padma.3.20.53)
तत्र स्नात्वा दिवं यांति ये मृतास्तेऽपुनर्भवाः । औपानहं तदा छत्रं देयमन्नं च कांचनम्
tatra snātvā divaṁ yāṁti ye mṛtāste'punarbhavāḥ aupānahaṁ tadā chatraṁ deyamannaṁ ca kāṁcanam
Having bathed there, those who die go to heaven, never to be born again. One should then give sandals, an umbrella, food, and gold.
Verse 54 (padma.3.20.54)
भोजनं च यथाशक्त्या अक्षयं तस्य तद्भवेत् । सूर्योपरागे यो दद्याद्दानं चैव यथेच्छया
bhojanaṁ ca yathāśaktyā akṣayaṁ tasya tadbhavet sūryoparāge yo dadyāddānaṁ caiva yathecchayā
Food given there according to one's means becomes imperishable. Whoever, during a solar eclipse, gives a gift according to his wish,

तीर्थस्नानं तु यद्दानमक्षयं तस्य तद्भवेत् । चंद्रसूर्योपरागेषु वृषोत्सर्गमनुत्तमम्
tīrthasnānaṁ tu yaddānamakṣayaṁ tasya tadbhavet caṁdrasūryoparāgeṣu vṛṣotsargamanuttamam
the bath at that tirtha and the gift given there become imperishable for him. During eclipses of the moon or sun, the unsurpassed rite of releasing a bull —
Verse 56 (padma.3.20.56)
न जानंति नरा मूढा विष्णुमायाविमोहिताः । नर्मदायां स्थितं दिव्यं वृषतीर्थं नराधिप
na jānaṁti narā mūḍhā viṣṇumāyāvimohitāḥ narmadāyāṁ sthitaṁ divyaṁ vṛṣatīrthaṁ narādhipa
foolish men, deluded by Vishnu's maya, do not know of this divine Vrisha-tirtha situated in the Narmada, O lord of men.
Verse 57 (padma.3.20.57)
भृगुतीर्थस्य माहात्म्यं यः शृणोति नरः सकृत् । विमुक्तः सर्वपापेभ्यो रुद्रलोकं स गच्छति
bhṛgutīrthasya māhātmyaṁ yaḥ śṛṇoti naraḥ sakṛt vimuktaḥ sarvapāpebhyo rudralokaṁ sa gacchati
Whoever hears the glory of Bhrigu-tirtha even once is freed from all sins and goes to the world of Rudra.
Verse 58 (padma.3.20.58)
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र गौतमेश्वरमुत्तमम् । तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्नुपवासपरायणः
tato gaccheta rājeṁdra gautameśvaramuttamam tatra snātvā naro rājannupavāsaparāyaṇaḥ
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the excellent Gautameshvara; having bathed there, O king, a man devoted to fasting,

कांचनेन विमानेन ब्रह्मलोके महीयते । धौतपापं ततो गच्छेद्धौतं यत्र वृषेण तु
kāṁcanena vimānena brahmaloke mahīyate dhautapāpaṁ tato gaccheddhautaṁ yatra vṛṣeṇa tu
in a golden celestial chariot, is honored in Brahmaloka. Then one should go to Dhauta-papa, where sin was washed away by a bull,
Verse 60 (padma.3.20.60)
नर्मदायां स्थितं राजन्सर्वपातकनाशनम् । तत्र तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा ब्रह्महत्यां व्यपोहति
narmadāyāṁ sthitaṁ rājansarvapātakanāśanam tatra tīrthe naraḥ snātvā brahmahatyāṁ vyapohati
situated on the Narmada, O king, destroyer of every sin; having bathed at that tirtha, one dispels the sin of killing a brahmin.
Verse 61 (padma.3.20.61)
तस्मिन्तीर्थे महाराज प्राणत्यागं करोति यः । चतुर्भुजस्त्रिनेत्रस्तु रुद्रतुल्यबलो भवेत्
tasmintīrthe mahārāja prāṇatyāgaṁ karoti yaḥ caturbhujastrinetrastu rudratulyabalo bhavet
O great king, whoever gives up his life-breath at that tirtha becomes four-armed and three-eyed, of strength equal to Rudra's.
Verse 62 (padma.3.20.62)
वसेत्कल्पायुतं साग्रं रुद्रतुल्यपराक्रमः । कालेन महता प्राप्तः पृथिव्यामेकराड्भवेत्
vasetkalpāyutaṁ sāgraṁ rudratulyaparākramaḥ kālena mahatā prāptaḥ pṛthivyāmekarāḍbhavet
He dwells for more than ten thousand kalpas, with valor equal to Rudra's; after a great span of time, he attains the earth and becomes sole emperor.
Verse 63 (padma.3.20.63)
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र एरंडीतीर्थमुत्तमम् । प्रयागे यत्फलं दृष्टं मार्कंडेयेन भाषितम्
tato gaccheta rājeṁdra eraṁḍītīrthamuttamam prayāge yatphalaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ mārkaṁḍeyena bhāṣitam
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the excellent Erandi-tirtha; the fruit that was declared by Markandeya to be seen at Prayaga —

तत्फलं लभते राजन्स्नातमात्रस्तु मानवः । मासि भाद्रपदे चैव शुक्लपक्षस्य चाष्टमीम्
tatphalaṁ labhate rājansnātamātrastu mānavaḥ māsi bhādrapade caiva śuklapakṣasya cāṣṭamīm
that same fruit, O king, a man obtains merely by bathing there. In the month of Bhadrapada, on the eighth of the bright fortnight,

उपोष्य रजनीमेकां तत्र स्नानं समाचरेत् । यमदूतैर्न बाध्येत इंद्रलोकं स गच्छति
upoṣya rajanīmekāṁ tatra snānaṁ samācaret yamadūtairna bādhyeta iṁdralokaṁ sa gacchati
having fasted a single night, one should perform the ritual bath there; he is not troubled by the messengers of Yama, and goes to the world of Indra.
Verse 66 (padma.3.20.66)
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र सिद्धो यत्र जनार्दनः । हिरण्यद्वीपविख्यातं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्
tato gaccheta rājeṁdra siddho yatra janārdanaḥ hiraṇyadvīpavikhyātaṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to where Janardana stands accomplished — renowned as Hiranyadvipa, destroyer of all sin.
Verse 67 (padma.3.20.67)
तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्धनवान्रूपवान्भवेत् । ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र तीर्थं कनखलं महत्
tatra snātvā naro rājandhanavānrūpavānbhavet tato gaccheta rājeṁdra tīrthaṁ kanakhalaṁ mahat
Having bathed there, O king, a man becomes wealthy and handsome. Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the great tirtha of Kanakhala,

गरुडेन तपस्तप्तं तस्मिंस्तीर्थे नराधिप । विख्यातं सर्वलोकेषु योगिनी तत्र तिष्ठति
garuḍena tapastaptaṁ tasmiṁstīrthe narādhipa vikhyātaṁ sarvalokeṣu yoginī tatra tiṣṭhati
where Garuda performed austerity, O lord of men — renowned throughout all the worlds; there a Yogini abides,
Verse 69 (padma.3.20.69)
क्रीडते योगिभिः सार्धं शिवेन सह नृत्यति । तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्रुद्रलोके महीयते
krīḍate yogibhiḥ sārdhaṁ śivena saha nṛtyati tatra snātvā naro rājanrudraloke mahīyate
sporting together with the Yogis, dancing together with Shiva. Having bathed there, O king, a man is honored in the world of Rudra.
Verse 70 (padma.3.20.70)
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र ईशतीर्थमनुत्तमम् । ईशस्तत्र विनिर्मुक्तो गत ऊर्ध्वं न संशयः
tato gaccheta rājeṁdra īśatīrthamanuttamam īśastatra vinirmukto gata ūrdhvaṁ na saṁśayaḥ
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the unsurpassed Isha-tirtha; there Isha was liberated and went upward — there is no doubt.
Verse 71 (padma.3.20.71)
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र सिद्धो यत्र जनार्दनः । वाराहं रूपमास्थाय अचिंत्यः परमेश्वरः
tato gaccheta rājeṁdra siddho yatra janārdanaḥ vārāhaṁ rūpamāsthāya aciṁtyaḥ parameśvaraḥ
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to where Janardana stands accomplished, having assumed the boar-form, the inconceivable Supreme Lord.
Verse 72 (padma.3.20.72)
वराहतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा द्वादश्यां तु विशेषतः । विष्णुलोकमवाप्नोति नरकं तु न गच्छति
varāhatīrthe naraḥ snātvā dvādaśyāṁ tu viśeṣataḥ viṣṇulokamavāpnoti narakaṁ tu na gacchati
A man, having bathed at Varaha-tirtha, especially on the twelfth lunar day, attains the world of Vishnu and does not go to hell.
Verse 73 (padma.3.20.73)
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र सोमतीर्थमनुत्तमम् । पौर्णिमास्यां विशेषेण तत्र स्नानं समाचरेत्
tato gaccheta rājeṁdra somatīrthamanuttamam paurṇimāsyāṁ viśeṣeṇa tatra snānaṁ samācaret
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the unsurpassed Soma-tirtha; especially on the full moon, one should perform the ritual bath there.

प्रणिपत्य च ईशानं बलिस्तस्य प्रसीदति । हरिश्चन्द्रपुरं दिव्यमंतरिक्षे तु दृश्यते
praṇipatya ca īśānaṁ balistasya prasīdati hariścandrapuraṁ divyamaṁtarikṣe tu dṛśyate
Having prostrated before Ishana, even Bali becomes pleased. The divine city of Harishchandra is seen in the sky,
Verse 75 (padma.3.20.75)
चक्रध्वजे समावृत्ते सुप्ते नागारिकेतने । नर्मदातोयवेगेन रुरुकच्छोपसेवितम्
cakradhvaje samāvṛtte supte nāgāriketane narmadātoyavegena rurukacchopasevitam
when the banner-wheel turns, when the abode of the enemy of serpents sleeps — served by the swift current of the Narmada, resorted to by Ruruka.
Verse 76 (padma.3.20.76)
तस्मिन्स्थाने निवासं च विष्णुः शंकरमब्रवीत् । द्वीपेश्वरे नरः स्नात्वा लभेद्बहुसुवर्णकम्
tasminsthāne nivāsaṁ ca viṣṇuḥ śaṁkaramabravīt dvīpeśvare naraḥ snātvā labhedbahusuvarṇakam
Vishnu spoke to Shankara about dwelling in that place. Bathing at Dvipeshvara, a man obtains abundant gold.
Verse 77 (padma.3.20.77)
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र रुद्रकन्यां तु संगमे । स्नातमात्रो नरस्तत्र देव्याः स्थानमवाप्नुयात्
tato gaccheta rājeṁdra rudrakanyāṁ tu saṁgame snātamātro narastatra devyāḥ sthānamavāpnuyāt
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the confluence of Rudra's daughter; merely by bathing there, a man attains the abode of the Goddess.
Verse 78 (padma.3.20.78)
देवतीर्थं ततो गच्छेत्सर्वदेवनमस्कृतम् । तत्र स्नात्वा तु राजेंद्र दैवतैः सह मोदते
devatīrthaṁ tato gacchetsarvadevanamaskṛtam tatra snātvā tu rājeṁdra daivataiḥ saha modate
Then one should go to Deva-tirtha, saluted by all the gods; having bathed there, O lord of kings, one rejoices together with the deities.
Verse 79 (padma.3.20.79)
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र शिखितीर्थमनुत्तमम् । तत्र वै दीयते दानं सर्वं कोटिगुणं भवेत्
tato gaccheta rājeṁdra śikhitīrthamanuttamam tatra vai dīyate dānaṁ sarvaṁ koṭiguṇaṁ bhavet
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the unsurpassed Shikhi-tirtha; whatever gift is given there becomes multiplied a crore-fold.
Verse 80 (padma.3.20.80)
अपरपक्षे अमावास्यां स्नानं तत्र समाचरेत् । ब्राह्मणं भोजयेदेकं कोटिर्भवति भोजिता
aparapakṣe amāvāsyāṁ snānaṁ tatra samācaret brāhmaṇaṁ bhojayedekaṁ koṭirbhavati bhojitā
On the new moon of the dark fortnight, one should perform the ritual bath there; whoever feeds a single brahmin, it is as if a crore have been fed.
Verse 81 (padma.3.20.81)
भृगुतीर्थे तु राजेंद्र तीर्थकोटिर्व्यवस्थिता । अकामो वा सकामो वा तत्र स्नायीत मानवः
bhṛgutīrthe tu rājeṁdra tīrthakoṭirvyavasthitā akāmo vā sakāmo vā tatra snāyīta mānavaḥ
O lord of kings, at Bhrigu-tirtha, a crore of tirthas stand established; whether desiring some end or free from desire, a man should bathe there —
Verse 82 (padma.3.20.82)
अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति दैवतैः सह मोदते । तत्र सिद्धमवाप्नोति भृगुस्तु मुनिपुंगवः । अवतारः कृतस्तेन शंकरेण महात्मना
aśvamedhamavāpnoti daivataiḥ saha modate tatra siddhamavāpnoti bhṛgustu munipuṁgavaḥ avatāraḥ kṛtastena śaṁkareṇa mahātmanā
He obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha and rejoices together with the deities. There Bhrigu, bull among sages, attained accomplishment; and there, by that great-souled Shankara, an incarnation was made.
