where, O Yudhishthira, the four oceans dwell together. Touching it there, O lord of kings, and having also circumambulated it —

Verse 62 (padma.3.39.62)

niyatātmā naraḥ pūto gaccheta paramāṁ gatim tato gacchetkuruśreṣṭha śṛṁgaverapuraṁ mahat

a self-controlled and purified man attains the supreme goal. Then, O best of the Kurus, let him go to the great city of Shringaverapura,

Verse 63 (padma.3.39.63)

yatra tīrṇo mahāprājño rāmo dāśarathiḥ purā gaṁgāyāṁ tu naraḥ snātvā brahmacārī jiteṁdriyaḥ

where the greatly wise Rama, son of Dasharatha, once crossed over. A man bathing in the Ganga there, a celibate of controlled senses —

Verse 64 (padma.3.39.64)

vidhūtapāpmā bhavati vājapeyaṁ ca viṁdati tato muṁjavaṭaṁ gachetsthānaṁ devasya dhīmataḥ

becomes cleansed of sin and obtains the fruit of the Vajapeya. Then let him go to Munjavata, the abode of the wise god.

Verse 65 (padma.3.39.65)

abhigamya mahādevamabhyarcya ca narādhipa pradakṣiṇamupāvṛtya gāṇapatyamavāpnuyāt

Approaching Mahadeva there and worshipping him, O lord of men, and having circumambulated him, one obtains the state of a lord of his hosts.

Verse 66 (padma.3.39.66)

tato gaccheta rājeṁdra prayāgamṛṣisaṁstutam yatra brahmādayo devā diśaśca sadigīśvarāḥ

Then, O lord of kings, let him go to Prayaga, praised by the sages, where Brahma and the other gods, and the directions with their guardian lords,

Verse 67 (padma.3.39.67)

lokapālāśca siddhāśca niratāḥ pitarastathā sanatkumārapramukhāstathaiva ca maharṣayaḥ

and the guardians of the world, the Siddhas, and the ever-devoted ancestors, and the great sages headed by Sanatkumara —

Verse 68 (padma.3.39.68)

tathā nāgāḥ suparṇāśca siddhāḥ śukradharāstathā saritaḥ sāgarāścaiva gaṁdharvāpsarasastathā

and the Nagas, and the Suparnas, the Siddhas bearing pure light, the rivers and oceans, and the Gandharvas and Apsaras —

Verse 69 (padma.3.39.69)

hariśca bhagavānāste prajāpatipuraskṛtaḥ tatra trīṇyapi kuṁḍāni tayormadhyena jāhnavī

and the blessed Hari himself is present there, honored before Prajapati. There are the three pools there, and between them flows the Jahnavi.

Verse 70 (padma.3.39.70)

prayāgātsamatikrāṁtā sarvatīrthapuraskṛtā tapanasya sutā tatra triṣu lokeṣu viśrutā

Having passed beyond Prayaga, honored above all tirthas — there too is the daughter of the Sun, renowned in the three worlds,

Verse 71 (padma.3.39.71)

yamunāgaṁgayā sārddhaṁ saṁgatā lokabhāvinī gaṁgāyamunayormadhye pṛthivyā jaghanaṁ smṛtam

the Yamuna, joined together with the Ganga, blessing the world. Between the Ganga and the Yamuna is remembered the hip of the earth,

Verse 72 (padma.3.39.72)

prayāgaṁ jaghanasyāṁtamupasthamṛṣayo viduḥ prayāgaṁ supratiṣṭhānaṁ kaṁbalāśvatarāvubhau

and Prayaga the end of that hip, the sages know as its very lap. Prayaga is firmly established, guarded by the two serpents Kambala and Ashvatara,

Verse 73 (padma.3.39.73)

tīrthaṁ bhogavatī caiva vedī proktā prajāpateḥ tatra vedāśca yajñāśca mūrttimaṁto yudhiṣṭhira

and Bhogavati is a tirtha there, called the sacrificial altar of Prajapati. There, O Yudhishthira, the Vedas and the sacrifices assume embodied form,

Verse 74 (padma.3.39.74)

prajāpatimupāsaṁta ṛṣayaśca mahānaghāḥ yajaṁte kratubhirdevāṁstathā cakradharā nṛpa

and worship Prajapati; and great sinless sages, as well as the wielder of the discus, worship the gods with sacrificial rites.

Verse 75 (padma.3.39.75)

tataḥ puṇyatamaṁ nāsti triṣu lokeṣu bhārata prayāgaṁ sarvatīrthebhyaḥ prabhāveṇādhikaṁ prabho

There is nothing more meritorious than this in the three worlds, O Bharata; Prayaga, O lord, surpasses all tirthas in power.

Verse 76 (padma.3.39.76)

śravaṇāttasya tīrthasya nāmasaṁkīrtanādapi mūrdhakā namanādvāpi sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate

By merely hearing of that tirtha, or even by reciting its name, or by bowing one's head to it, one is freed from all sins.

Verse 77 (padma.3.39.77)

tatrābhiṣekaṁ yaḥ kuryātsaṁgame saṁśitavrataḥ puṇyaṁ sumahadāpnoti rājasūyāśvamedhayoḥ

Whoever, of strict vows, bathes there at the confluence, obtains the great merit of both the Rajasuya and the Ashvamedha.

Verse 78 (padma.3.39.78)

eṣā yajanabhūmirhi devānāmapi tatkathā dattaṁ tatra svalpamapi mahadbhavati bhārata

This indeed is the sacrificial ground even of the gods, so the story goes; whatever is given there, even a little, becomes great, O Bharata.

Verse 79 (padma.3.39.79)

Not because of the word of the gods, dear one, nor even because of the world's talk, should your resolve waver from the wish for death at Prayaga.

Verse 80 (padma.3.39.80)

daśatīrthasahasrāṇi ṣaṣṭikoṭyastathāparāḥ yeṣāṁ sānnidhyamatraiva kīrttitaṁ kurunaṁdana

Ten thousand tirthas, and sixty million others besides, are said, O joy of the Kurus, to be present there together.

Verse 81 (padma.3.39.81)

caturvidye ca yatpuṇyaṁ satyavādiṣu caiva yat snātaevatadāpnotigaṁgāyāmunasaṁgame

Whatever merit belongs to one learned in the four sciences, and whatever belongs to speakers of truth — merely by bathing at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna, one obtains it.

Verse 82 (padma.3.39.82)

tato bhogavatī nāma vāsukestīrthamuttamam tatrābhiṣekaṁ yaḥ kuryātso'śvamedhamavāpnuyāt

Then there is Bhogavati, the excellent tirtha of Vasuki; whoever bathes there obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha.

Verse 83 (padma.3.39.83)

tatra haṁsaprapatanaṁ tīrthaṁ trailokyaviśrutam daśāśvamedhikaṁ caiva gaṁgāyāṁ kurunaṁdana

There is Hamsaprapatana, a tirtha renowned in the three worlds, and Dashashvamedhika as well, on the Ganga, O joy of the Kurus.

Verse 84 (padma.3.39.84)

kurukṣetrasamā gaṁgā yatra tatrāvagāhitā viśeṣo vai kanakhale prayāgaṁ paramaṁ mahat

The Ganga, wherever bathed in, equals Kurukshetra in merit; its distinction is greatest at Kanakhala; and greater still is Prayaga, the supremely great.

Verse 85 (padma.3.39.85)

yadyakāryaśataṁ kṛtvā kṛtaṁ gaṁgāvasevanam sarvaṁ tattasya gaṁgāpo dahatyagniriveṁdhanam

Even if one has committed a hundred forbidden deeds, if he thereafter resorts to the Ganga, all of it the Ganga's waters burn away, as fire burns fuel.

Verse 86 (padma.3.39.86)

sarvaṁ dahati gaṁgāpastūlarāśimivānalaḥ sarvaṁ kṛtayuge puṇyaṁ tretāyāṁ puṣkaraṁ smṛtam

The waters of the Ganga burn away everything, as fire burns a heap of cotton. All merit was in the Krita age; in the Treta age, Pushkara is remembered as supreme;

Verse 87 (padma.3.39.87)

dvāpare tu kurukṣetraṁ gaṁgā kaliyuge smṛtā puṣkare tu tapastapyeddānaṁ dadyānmahālaye

in the Dvapara, Kurukshetra; and in the Kali age, the Ganga is remembered as supreme. At Pushkara one should practice austerity; at Mahalaya one should give gifts;

Verse 88 (padma.3.39.88)

malaye tvagnimārohedbhṛgutuṁge tvanāśanam puṣkare tu kurukṣetre gaṁgāpo madhyageṣu ca

at Malaya one should ascend into fire; at Bhrigutunga one should fast unto death. But at Pushkara, at Kurukshetra, and in the midst of the Ganga's waters —

Verse 89 (padma.3.39.89)

sadyastārayate jaṁtuḥ saptasaptāvarāṁstathā punāti kīrttitā pāpaṁ dṛṣṭvā puṇyaṁ prayacchati

a being who dies there is at once carried across, together with seven ascending and seven descending generations. Even merely spoken of, it purifies sin; seen, it bestows merit;

Verse 90 (padma.3.39.90)

avagāḍhā ca pītvā ca punātyāsaptamaṁ kulam yāvadasthi manuṣyasya gaṁgāyāḥ spṛśate jalam

bathed in and drunk, it purifies one's family up to the seventh generation. As long as a man's bone remains touched by the Ganga's water —

Verse 91 (padma.3.39.91)

tāvatsa puruṣo rājansvargaloke mahīyate yathā puṇyāni tīrthāni puṇyānyāyatanāni ca

so long, O king, is that man glorified in Svargaloka. Just as there are meritorious tirthas and meritorious shrines,

Verse 92 (padma.3.39.92)

upāsya puṇyaṁ labdhvā ca bhavati paralokabhāk na gaṁgā sadṛśaṁ tīrthaṁ na devaḥ keśavātparaḥ

so, worshipping and gaining merit, one shares in the world beyond. There is no tirtha equal to the Ganga, no god higher than Keshava,

Verse 93 (padma.3.39.93)

brāhmaṇebhyaḥ paraṁ nāsti evamāha pitāmahaḥ yatra gaṁgā mahārāja sa deśastatra yojanam

and nothing higher than Brahmins — so has the Grandsire declared. Wherever the Ganga is, O great king, that region extends a yojana around it,

Verse 94 (padma.3.39.94)

siddhakṣetraṁ ca vijñeyaṁ gaṁgātīrasamāśritam idaṁ satyaṁ dvijātīnāṁ sādhūnāṁ mānaseṣu ca

and the bank of the Ganga is to be known as a field of accomplishment. This truth should be impressed in the minds of the twice-born and of the virtuous;

Verse 95 (padma.3.39.95)

muktiṁ caiva japetkarṇe śiṣṭasyānugatasya ca idaṁ dharmyamidaṁ medhyamidaṁ svargyamidaṁ sukham

and liberation should be whispered into the ear of one who is disciplined and obedient to it. This is righteous, this is pure, this leads to heaven, this is bliss;

Verse 96 (padma.3.39.96)

idaṁ puṇyatamaṁ ramyaṁ pāvanaṁ dharmamuttamam mahīśīrṣamidaṁ guhyaṁ sarvapāpapramocanam

this is most meritorious, delightful, purifying, the highest righteousness — this secret is the very crown of the earth, releasing from every sin.

Verse 97 (padma.3.39.97)

adhītya dvijamadhye ca nirmalatvamavāpnuyāt śrīmatsvargyaṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ sapatnaśamanaṁ śivam

Studying this among Brahmins, one attains purity. It is glorious, heaven-bestowing, of great merit, quelling one's rivals, auspicious;

Verse 98 (padma.3.39.98)

medhājananamagryaṁ vai tīrthavaṁśānukīrttanam aputro labhate putramadhano dhanamāpnuyāt

it is foremost in generating intelligence, being a recitation of the lineage of tirthas. The sonless obtains a son; the poor obtains wealth;

Verse 99 (padma.3.39.99)

mahīṁ vijayate rājā vaiśyo dhanamavāpnuyāt śūdro yātīpsitānkāmānbrāhmaṇaḥ pāragaḥ paṭhan

a king conquers the earth; a Vaishya obtains wealth; a Shudra attains his desired wishes; and a Brahmin, reciting it, becomes a master of the far shore of learning.

Verse 100 (padma.3.39.100)

yaścedaṁ śṛṇuyānnityaṁ tīrthapuṇyaṁ sadā śuci jātismaratvamāpnoti nākapṛṣṭhe ca modate

Whoever constantly and purely hears this merit of the tirthas obtains memory of his past births and rejoices atop heaven.

Verse 101 (padma.3.39.101)

gamyānyapi ca tīrthāni kīrtitānyagamānyapi manasāpyabhigaccheta sarvatīrthamanīṣayā

Both the tirthas that can be visited and those spoken of that cannot be reached — one should approach all tirthas even in the mind, with a longing intelligence.

Verse 102 (padma.3.39.102)

etāni vasubhiḥ sādhyairādityairmarudaśvibhiḥ ṛṣibhirdevakalpaiśca kṛtāni sukṛtaiṣibhiḥ

These have been resorted to by the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Adityas, the Maruts and the Ashvins, and by sages like unto gods, desirous of good deeds.

Verse 103 (padma.3.39.103)

evaṁ tvamapi kauravya vidhinānena suvrata vraja tīrthāni niyataḥ puṇyaṁ puṇyena varddhate

So you too, O descendant of Kuru, O one of good vows, go to the tirthas by this same rule, disciplined; for merit is increased by further merit.

Verse 104 (padma.3.39.104)

bhāvitaiḥ karaṇaiḥ pūrvamāstikyāchrutidarśanāt prāpyaṁte tāni tīrthāni sadbhiḥ śiṣṭānudarśibhiḥ

Those tirthas are attained by the good, who follow the example of the wise, with faculties formerly purified through faith and through hearing and seeing the scriptures.

Verse 105 (padma.3.39.105)

nākṛto nākṛtātmā ca nāśucirna ca taskaraḥ snāti tīrtheṣu kauravya na ca vakramatirnaraḥ

No one unaccomplished, whose self is unrefined, nor the impure, nor a thief, truly bathes in the tirthas, O descendant of Kuru, nor a man of crooked mind.

Verse 106 (padma.3.39.106)

tvayā tu samyagvṛttena nityaṁ dharmārthadarśinā pitarastarpitāstāta sarve ca prapitāmahāḥ pitāmahapurogāśca devāḥ sarṣigaṇāstathā

But by you, of righteous conduct, ever mindful of dharma and artha — dear one — all your ancestors, your great-grandfathers, and the gods headed by your grandfather, together with the hosts of sages, have been satisfied.

Verse 107 (padma.3.39.107)

vasiṣṭha uvāca tvaṁ ca dharmeṇa dharmajña nityamevābhitoṣitāḥ dilīpakīrtiṁ mahatīṁ prāpsyase bhuvi śāśvatīm

Vasishtha said: And you, O knower of dharma, having ever pleased them through dharma, shall attain on earth the great and eternal fame of Dilipa.

Verse 108 (padma.3.39.108)

nārada uvāca evamuktvābhyanujñāpya vasiṣṭho bhagavānṛṣiḥ prītaḥ prītenamanasā tatraivāṁtaradhīyata

Narada said: Having spoken thus and given his leave, the blessed sage Vasishtha, pleased, vanished then and there.

Verse 109 (padma.3.39.109)

dilīpaḥ kuruśārdūla śāstratattvārthadarśanāt vasiṣṭhavacanāccaiva pṛthivīmanucakrame

Dilipa, O tiger among the Kurus, through his vision of the true meaning of the scriptures and by Vasishtha's word, then traversed the earth on pilgrimage.

Verse 110 (padma.3.39.110)

evameṣā mahābhāga pratiṣṭhāne pratiṣṭhitā tīrthayātrā mahāpuṇyā sarvapāpapramocanī

Thus, O greatly fortunate one, this pilgrimage of tirthas, established at Pratishthana, is of great merit and releases from every sin.

Verse 111 (padma.3.39.111)

anena vidhinā yastu pṛthivīṁ paryaṭiṣyati aśvamedhaśataṁ sāgraṁ phalaṁ pretyaiṣa bhokṣyate

Whoever shall wander over the earth by this same rule shall enjoy, after death, the fruit of a hundred Ashvamedhas and more.

Verse 112 (padma.3.39.112)

tataścāṣṭaguṇaṁ pārtha prāpsyase dharmamuttamam dilīpaḥ pārtha nṛpatiryathāpūrvamavāptavān

And you, O son of Pritha, shall attain eightfold that supreme merit which King Dilipa formerly obtained.

Verse 113 (padma.3.39.113)

netā ca tvamṛṣīnyasmāttasmātteṣṭaguṇaṁ phalam rakṣogaṇavikīrṇāni tīrthānyetāni bhārata

And because you shall be the leader of sages on this pilgrimage, for that reason your fruit shall be eightfold. These tirthas, O Bharata, that are now scattered with hordes of rakshasas —

Verse 114 (padma.3.39.114)

na gatirvidyate'nyasya tvāmṛte kurunaṁdana idaṁ devarṣicaritaṁ sarvatīrthānusaṁśritam

there is no other refuge for them except you, O joy of the Kurus. This account, followed by the divine sages, embracing all the tirthas —

Verse 115 (padma.3.39.115)

yaḥ paṭhetkalyamutthāya sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ṛṣimukhyāḥ sadā yatra vālmīkistvatha kaśyapaḥ

whoever recites it, rising at dawn, is freed from all sins. Where the foremost of sages are ever present — Valmiki, and Kashyapa,

Verse 116 (padma.3.39.116)

ātreyastvatha kauṁḍinyo viśvāmitro'tha gautamaḥ asito devalaścaiva mārkaṁḍeyo'tha gālavaḥ

Atreya, and Kaundinya, Vishvamitra, and Gautama, Asita and Devala, Markandeya, and Galava,

Verse 117 (padma.3.39.117)

bharadvājasya śiṣyaśca muniruddālakastathā śaunakaḥ saha putreṇa vyāsaśca tapatāṁ varaḥ

and the disciple of Bharadvaja, and the sage Uddalaka as well, Shaunaka together with his son, and Vyasa, best of those who practice austerity,

Verse 118 (padma.3.39.118)

durvāsāśca muniśreṣṭho jābāliśca mahātapāḥ ete ṛṣivarāḥ sarve tvatpratīkṣyāstapodhanāḥ

and Durvasa, best of sages, and Jabali of great austerity — all these excellent sages, rich in austerity, await you.

Verse 119 (padma.3.39.119)

ebhiḥ saha mahābhāga tīrthānyetānyanuvraja prāpsyase mahatīṁ kīrtiṁ yathā rājā mahābhiṣaḥ

O greatly fortunate one, journey to these tirthas together with them; you shall obtain great fame, like King Mahabhisha,

Verse 120 (padma.3.39.120)

yathā yayātirdharmātmā yathā rājā purūravāḥ tathā tvaṁ kuruśārdūla svena dharmeṇa śobhase

like the righteous-souled Yayati, like King Pururavas; so you too, O tiger among the Kurus, shall shine forth through your own righteousness.

Verse 121 (padma.3.39.121)

yathā bhagīratho rājā yathā rāmaśca viśrutaḥ yathā vai vṛtrahā sarvānsapatnānadahat purā

As King Bhagiratha, as the renowned Rama, as the slayer of Vritra once consumed all his rivals —

Verse 122 (padma.3.39.122)

trailokyaṁ pālayāmāsa devarāṭvigatajvaraḥ tathā śatrukṣayaṁ kṛtvā tvaṁ prajāḥ pālayiṣyasi

and, freed of anguish, the king of gods protected the three worlds — so you too, having destroyed your enemies, shall protect your people.

Verse 123 (padma.3.39.123)

svadharmeṇārjitāmurvīṁ prāpya rājīvalocana khyātiṁ yāsyasi vīryeṇa kārttavīryārjuno yathā

Having gained the earth won through your own righteousness, O lotus-eyed one, you shall attain fame through your valor, like Kartavirya Arjuna.

Verse 124 (padma.3.39.124)

sūta uvāca evamābhāṣya rājānaṁ nārado bhagavānṛṣiḥ anujñāpya mahārājaṁ tatraivāṁtaradhīyata

Suta said: Having thus addressed the king, the blessed sage Narada, taking leave of the great king, vanished then and there.

Verse 125 (padma.3.39.125)

yudhiṣṭhiro'pi dharmātmā ṛṣibhiḥ saha suvrataḥ jagāmākhilatīrthāni sādaraḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ

And Yudhishthira too, the righteous-souled lord of the earth, of good vows, together with the sages, reverently visited all the tirthas.

Verse 126 (padma.3.39.126)

mayoktāmṛṣayaḥ sarve tīrthayātrāśrayāṁ kathām yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādvāpi sa muktaḥ sarvapātakaiḥ

O sages, whoever recites or even hears this story of the pilgrimage of tirthas, told by me, is freed from all sins.

Verse 127 (padma.3.39.127)

mayoktamakhilaṁ tattvaṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchatha ṛṣīṇāṁ puṇyakīrtīnāṁ nāvaktavyaṁ mamāsti vai

I have told the entire truth; what more do you wish to hear? For sages of pure fame, there is indeed nothing I should leave unspoken.
