Narada said: O lord, I have told in brief the greatness of Varanasi and its tirthas; now hear of the other tirthas.

Verse 2 (padma.3.38.2)

tato gayāṁ samāsādya brahmacārī samāhitaḥ aśvamedhamavāpnoti gamanādeva bhārata

Then, reaching Gaya, a self-controlled celibate, O Bharata, obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha by the very act of going there.

Verse 3 (padma.3.38.3)

yatrākṣayyavaṭo nāma triṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ pitṝṇāṁ tatra vai dattamakṣayaṁ bhavati prabho

Where stands the banyan tree named Akshayavata, renowned in the three worlds; whatever is offered there to the ancestors, O lord, becomes imperishable.

Verse 4 (padma.3.38.4)

mahānadyāmupaspṛśya tarpayetpitṛdevatāḥ akṣayānprāpnuyāllokānkulaṁ caiva samuddharet

Touching the waters of the Mahanadi, one should offer libations to the ancestor-deities; he obtains imperishable worlds and delivers his lineage.

Verse 5 (padma.3.38.5)

tato brahmasaro gacchedbrahmāraṇyopasevitam puṁḍarīkamavāpnoti prabhātamiva śarvarī

Then let him go to Brahmasaras, frequented by the sages of Brahmaranya; he obtains the fruit of the Pundarika sacrifice, as night gives way to dawn.

Verse 6 (padma.3.38.6)

sarasi brahmaṇā tatra yūpaśreṣṭhaḥ samucchritaḥ yūpaṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ kṛtvā vājapeyaphalaṁ labhet

At that lake a most excellent sacrificial post was raised by Brahma; circumambulating the post, one obtains the fruit of the Vajapeya sacrifice.

Verse 7 (padma.3.38.7)

tato gaccheta rājeṁdra dhenukaṁ lokaviśrutam ekārātroṣito rājanprayacchettiladhenukām

Then, O lord of kings, let him go to Dhenuka, renowned throughout the world; fasting one night, O king, let him give a cow made of sesame in gift.

Verse 8 (padma.3.38.8)

With soul purified of all sin, he surely goes to the world of Soma; there, O great king, a mark of this remains even to this day — of that there is no doubt.

Verse 9 (padma.3.38.9)

kapilā sahavatsā vai parvate vicaratyutaḥ savatsāyāḥ padānyasyā dṛśyaṁte'dyāpi bhārata

A tawny cow with her calf indeed roams that mountain even now; the footprints of that cow with her calf, O Bharata, are seen even today.

Verse 10 (padma.3.38.10)

teṣūpaspṛśya rājeṁdra padeṣu nṛpasattama yatkiṁcidaśubhaṁ pāpaṁ tatpraṇaśyati bhārata

O lord of kings, best of rulers, by touching those footprints, O Bharata, whatever inauspicious sin there may be is destroyed.

Verse 11 (padma.3.38.11)

Then let him go to Gridhravata, the place of the trident-bearing god; let him bathe there with ash, having drawn near to the bull-bannered one.

Verse 12 (padma.3.38.12)

For a Brahmin it is deemed equal to a twelve-year vow duly observed; for the other castes too, all sin is destroyed.

Verse 13 (padma.3.38.13)
