Verse 1 (padma.3.6.1)

ऋषय ऊचुः । यदिदं भारतं वर्षं पुण्यं पुण्यविधायकम् । तत्सर्वं नः समाचक्ष्व त्वं हि नो बुद्धिमान्मतः

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ yadidaṁ bhārataṁ varṣaṁ puṇyaṁ puṇyavidhāyakam tatsarvaṁ naḥ samācakṣva tvaṁ hi no buddhimānmataḥ

The sages said: This land of Bharata, sacred and the bestower of merit — tell us all of it; you indeed are held by us to be the wise one.

Verse 2 (padma.3.6.2)

सूत उवाच । अत्र ते कीर्त्तयिष्यामि वर्षं भारतमुत्तमम् । प्रिय मित्रस्य देवस्य मनोर्वैवस्वतस्य च

sūta uvāca atra te kīrttayiṣyāmi varṣaṁ bhāratamuttamam priya mitrasya devasya manorvaivasvatasya ca

Suta said: Here I shall glorify the excellent land of Bharata — dear to the god Mitra, to Manu Vaivasvata,

Verse 3 (padma.3.6.3)

पृथोश्च प्राज्ञ वै न्यस्य तथैक्ष्वाकोर्महात्मनः । ययातेरंबरीषस्य मांधातुर्नहुषस्य च

pṛthośca prājña vai nyasya tathaikṣvākormahātmanaḥ yayāteraṁbarīṣasya māṁdhāturnahuṣasya ca

O wise one, and to Prithu, to great-souled Ikshvaku, to Yayati, Ambarisha, Mandhata, and Nahusha.

Verse 4 (padma.3.6.4)

तथैव मुचुकुंदस्य कुबेरोशीनरस्य च । ऋषभस्य तथैलस्य नृगस्य नृपतेस्तथा

tathaiva mucukuṁdasya kuberośīnarasya ca ṛṣabhasya tathailasya nṛgasya nṛpatestathā

Likewise it is dear to Muchukunda, to Kubera and Ushinara, to Rishabha, to Aila, and to King Nriga.

Verse 5 (padma.3.6.5)

कुशिकस्यैव राजर्षेर्गाधेश्चैव महात्मनः । सोमस्य चैव राजर्षेर्दिलीपस्य तथैव च

kuśikasyaiva rājarṣergādheścaiva mahātmanaḥ somasya caiva rājarṣerdilīpasya tathaiva ca

It is dear to the royal seer Kushika, to great-souled Gadhi, to the royal seer Soma, and likewise to Dilipa.

Verse 6 (padma.3.6.6)

अन्येषां च महाभागाः क्षत्रियाणां बलीयसाम् । सर्वेषामेव भूतानां प्रियं भारतमुत्तमम्

anyeṣāṁ ca mahābhāgāḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ balīyasām sarveṣāmeva bhūtānāṁ priyaṁ bhāratamuttamam

O greatly fortunate ones, it is dear to other mighty kshatriyas as well, and indeed to all beings — this excellent land of Bharata.

Verse 7 (padma.3.6.7)

ततो वर्षं प्रवक्ष्यामि यथाश्रुतमहो द्विजाः । महेंद्रो मलयःसह्यः शुक्तिमानृक्षवानपि

tato varṣaṁ pravakṣyāmi yathāśrutamaho dvijāḥ maheṁdro malayaḥsahyaḥ śuktimānṛkṣavānapi

Now I shall describe that region as I have heard it, O twice-born. Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Shuktimat, Rikshavat,

Verse 8 (padma.3.6.8)

विंध्यश्च पारियात्रश्च सप्तैते कुलपर्वताः । तेषां सहस्रशो विप्रा पर्वतास्ते समीपतः

viṁdhyaśca pāriyātraśca saptaite kulaparvatāḥ teṣāṁ sahasraśo viprā parvatāste samīpataḥ

Vindhya, and Pariyatra — these seven are the principal mountains. O brahmins, near them are thousands of other mountains as well,

Verse 9 (padma.3.6.9)

अविज्ञाताः सारवंतो विपुलाश्चित्रसानवः । अन्ये तु ये परिज्ञाता ह्रस्वा ह्रस्वोपजीविनः

avijñātāḥ sāravaṁto vipulāścitrasānavaḥ anye tu ye parijñātā hrasvā hrasvopajīvinaḥ

unknown yet substantial, vast, of varied peaks; and others that are known, small, subsisting on modest means.

Verse 10 (padma.3.6.10)

आर्यम्लेच्छसधर्माणस्ते मिश्राः पुरुषा द्विजाः । नदीं पिबंति विमलां गंगां सिंधुंसरस्वतीम्

āryamlecchasadharmāṇaste miśrāḥ puruṣā dvijāḥ nadīṁ pibaṁti vimalāṁ gaṁgāṁ siṁdhuṁsarasvatīm

There the mixed peoples, sharing the customs of both Aryas and Mlecchas, O twice-born, drink of the pure rivers — the Ganga, the Sindhu, and the Sarasvati,

गोदावरीं नर्मदां च बहूदां च महानदीम् । शतद्रुं चंद्रभागां च यमुनां च महानदीम्

godāvarīṁ narmadāṁ ca bahūdāṁ ca mahānadīm śatadruṁ caṁdrabhāgāṁ ca yamunāṁ ca mahānadīm

the Godavari, the Narmada and the great river Bahuda, the Shatadru, the Chandrabhaga, and the great river Yamuna,

दृषद्वतीं वितस्तां च विपापां स्वच्छवालुकाम् । नदीं वेत्रवतीं चैव कृष्णां वेणीं च निम्नगाम्

dṛṣadvatīṁ vitastāṁ ca vipāpāṁ svacchavālukām nadīṁ vetravatīṁ caiva kṛṣṇāṁ veṇīṁ ca nimnagām

the Drishadvati, the Vitasta, the clear-sanded Vipapa, the river Vetravati, the Krishna, and the flowing Veni,

इरावतीं वितस्तां च पयोष्णीं देविकामपि । वेदस्मृतिं वेदशिरां त्रिदिवां सिंधुला कृमिम्

irāvatīṁ vitastāṁ ca payoṣṇīṁ devikāmapi vedasmṛtiṁ vedaśirāṁ tridivāṁ siṁdhulā kṛmim

the Iravati, the Vitasta, the Payoshni, the Devika, the Vedasmriti, the Vedashira, the Tridiva, the Sindhula, and the Krimi,

करीषिणीं चित्रवहां त्रिसेनां चैव निम्नगाम् । गोमतीं धूतपापां च चंदनां च महानदीम्

karīṣiṇīṁ citravahāṁ trisenāṁ caiva nimnagām gomatīṁ dhūtapāpāṁ ca caṁdanāṁ ca mahānadīm

the Karishini, the Chitravaha, the flowing Trisena, the Gomati, the Dhutapapa, and the great river Chandana,

कौशिकीं त्रिदिवां हृद्यां नाचितां रोहितारणीम् । रहस्यां शतकुंभां च सरयूं च द्विजोत्तमाः

kauśikīṁ tridivāṁ hṛdyāṁ nācitāṁ rohitāraṇīm rahasyāṁ śatakuṁbhāṁ ca sarayūṁ ca dvijottamāḥ

the Kaushiki, the delightful Tridiva, the Nachita, the Rohitaruna, the Rahasya, the Shatakumbha, and the Sarayu, O best of the twice-born,

चर्मण्वतीं वेत्रवतीं हस्तिसोमां दिशं तथा । शरावतीं पयोष्णीं च भीमां भीमरथीमपि

carmaṇvatīṁ vetravatīṁ hastisomāṁ diśaṁ tathā śarāvatīṁ payoṣṇīṁ ca bhīmāṁ bhīmarathīmapi

the Charmanvati, the Vetravati, the Hastisoma and the Disha, the Sharavati, the Payoshni, the Bhima, and also the Bhimarathi,

कावेरीं चुलुकां चापि तापीं शतमलामपि । नीवारां महितां चापि सुप्रयोगां तथा नदीम्

kāverīṁ culukāṁ cāpi tāpīṁ śatamalāmapi nīvārāṁ mahitāṁ cāpi suprayogāṁ tathā nadīm

the Kaveri, the Chuluka, the Tapi, the Shatamala, the Nivara, the Mahita, and also the river Suprayoga,

पवित्रां कृष्णलां सिंधुं वाजिनीं पुरमालिनीम् । पूर्वाभिरामां वीरां च भीमां मालावतीं तथा

pavitrāṁ kṛṣṇalāṁ siṁdhuṁ vājinīṁ puramālinīm pūrvābhirāmāṁ vīrāṁ ca bhīmāṁ mālāvatīṁ tathā

the sacred Krishnala, the Sindhu, the Vajini, the Puramalini, the Purvabhirama, the Vira, the Bhima, and likewise the Malavati,

पलाशिनीं पापहरां महेंद्रां पटलावतीम् । करीषिणीमसिक्नीं च कुशचीरीं महानदीम्

palāśinīṁ pāpaharāṁ maheṁdrāṁ paṭalāvatīm karīṣiṇīmasiknīṁ ca kuśacīrīṁ mahānadīm

the Palashini, the sin-removing Mahendra, the Patalavati, the Karishini, the Asikni, and the great river Kushachiri,

Verse 20 (padma.3.6.20)

मरुतां प्रवरां मेनां हेमां घृतवतीं तथा । अनावतीमनुष्णां च सेव्यां कापीं च सत्तमाः

marutāṁ pravarāṁ menāṁ hemāṁ ghṛtavatīṁ tathā anāvatīmanuṣṇāṁ ca sevyāṁ kāpīṁ ca sattamāḥ

the Maruta, the excellent Mena, the Hema, the Ghritavati, the Anavati, the Anushna, and the delightful Kapi, O excellent ones,

Verse 21 (padma.3.6.21)

सदावीरामधृष्यां च कुशचीरां महानदीम् । रथचित्रां ज्योतिरथां विश्वामित्रां कपिंजलाम्

sadāvīrāmadhṛṣyāṁ ca kuśacīrāṁ mahānadīm rathacitrāṁ jyotirathāṁ viśvāmitrāṁ kapiṁjalām

the Sadavira, the Adhrishya, and the great river Kushachira, the Rathachitra, the Jyotiratha, the Vishvamitra, and the Kapinjala,

Verse 22 (padma.3.6.22)

चंद्रावहफलद्यं चैव कुचीरामंबुवाहिनीम् । वैनदीं पिंगलां वेणां तुंगवेगां महानदीम्

caṁdrāvahaphaladyaṁ caiva kucīrāmaṁbuvāhinīm vainadīṁ piṁgalāṁ veṇāṁ tuṁgavegāṁ mahānadīm

the Chandravahaphalada, the Kuchira, the Ambuvahini, the Vainadi, the Pingala, the Vena, and the great river Tungavega,

Verse 23 (padma.3.6.23)

विदिशां कृष्णवेणां च ताम्रां च कपिलामपि । धेनुं सकामां वेदस्वां हविःस्रावां महापथाम्

vidiśāṁ kṛṣṇaveṇāṁ ca tāmrāṁ ca kapilāmapi dhenuṁ sakāmāṁ vedasvāṁ haviḥsrāvāṁ mahāpathām

the Vidisha, the Krishnavena, the Tamra, and also the Kapila, the Dhenu, the Sakama, the Vedasva, and the great highway-river Havihsrava,

Verse 24 (padma.3.6.24)

शिप्रां च पिच्छलां चैव भारद्वाजीं च निम्नगाम् । कौर्णिकीं निम्नगां शोणां बाहुदामथ चंद्रमाम्

śiprāṁ ca picchalāṁ caiva bhāradvājīṁ ca nimnagām kaurṇikīṁ nimnagāṁ śoṇāṁ bāhudāmatha caṁdramām

the Shipra, the Pichchhala, the Bharadvaji, the flowing Kaurniki, the Shona, the Bahuda, and the Chandrama,

दुर्गामंतः शिलां चैव ब्रह्ममेध्यां दृषद्वतीम् । परोक्षामथ रोहीं च तथा जंबूनदीमपि

durgāmaṁtaḥ śilāṁ caiva brahmamedhyāṁ dṛṣadvatīm parokṣāmatha rohīṁ ca tathā jaṁbūnadīmapi

the Durga, the Antahshila, the Brahmamedhya, the Drishadvati, the Paroksha, the Rohi, and likewise the Jambunadi,

Verse 26 (padma.3.6.26)

सुनासां तमसां दासीं सामान्यां वरणामसिम् । नीलां धृतिकरीं चैव पर्णाशां च महानदीम्

sunāsāṁ tamasāṁ dāsīṁ sāmānyāṁ varaṇāmasim nīlāṁ dhṛtikarīṁ caiva parṇāśāṁ ca mahānadīm

the Sunasa, the Tamasa, the Dasi, the Samanya, the Varana, the Asi, the Nila, the Dhritikari, and the great river Parnasha,

मानवीं वृषभां भासां ब्रह्ममेध्यां दृषद्वतीम् । एताश्चान्याश्च बहुला महानद्यो द्विजर्षभाः

mānavīṁ vṛṣabhāṁ bhāsāṁ brahmamedhyāṁ dṛṣadvatīm etāścānyāśca bahulā mahānadyo dvijarṣabhāḥ

the Manavi, the Vrishabha, the Bhasa, the Brahmamedhya, and the Drishadvati — these, O bulls among the twice-born, and many other great rivers besides,

Verse 28 (padma.3.6.28)

सदा निरामयां कृष्णां मंदगां मंदवाहिनीम् । ब्राह्मणीं च महागौरीं दुर्गामपि च सत्तमाः

sadā nirāmayāṁ kṛṣṇāṁ maṁdagāṁ maṁdavāhinīm brāhmaṇīṁ ca mahāgaurīṁ durgāmapi ca sattamāḥ

the ever-wholesome Krishna, the slow-flowing Mandaga, the Brahmani, the great Gauri, and likewise the Durga, O excellent ones,

चित्रोत्पलां चित्ररथामतुलां रोहिणीं तथा । मंदाकिनीं वैतरणीं कोकां चापि महानदीम्

citrotpalāṁ citrarathāmatulāṁ rohiṇīṁ tathā maṁdākinīṁ vaitaraṇīṁ kokāṁ cāpi mahānadīm

the Chitrotpala, the Chitraratha, the peerless Rohini, the Mandakini, the Vaitarani, the Koka, and the great river [Vena],

Verse 30 (padma.3.6.30)

शुक्तिमतीमनंगां च तथैव वृषसाह्वयाम् । लोहित्यां करतोयां च तथैव वृषकात्वयाम्

śuktimatīmanaṁgāṁ ca tathaiva vṛṣasāhvayām lohityāṁ karatoyāṁ ca tathaiva vṛṣakātvayām

the Shuktimati, the Ananga, and likewise the Vrishasahvaya, the Lohitya, the Karatoya, and likewise the Vrishakatvaya,

Verse 31 (padma.3.6.31)

कुमारीमृषितुल्यां च मारिषां च सरस्वतीम् । मंदाकिनीं सुपुण्यां च सर्वां गंगां च सत्तमाः

kumārīmṛṣitulyāṁ ca māriṣāṁ ca sarasvatīm maṁdākinīṁ supuṇyāṁ ca sarvāṁ gaṁgāṁ ca sattamāḥ

the Kumari, the Rishitulya, the Marisha, the Sarasvati, the greatly sacred Mandakini, and, O excellent ones, every river called Ganga —

Verse 32 (padma.3.6.32)

विश्वस्य मातरः सर्वाः सर्वाश्चैव महाफलाः । तथा नद्यः सुप्रकाशाः शतशोथ सहस्रशः

viśvasya mātaraḥ sarvāḥ sarvāścaiva mahāphalāḥ tathā nadyaḥ suprakāśāḥ śataśotha sahasraśaḥ

all of these are the mothers of the world and all bestow great merit; and likewise, by the hundreds and thousands, there are other brilliant rivers besides.

Verse 33 (padma.3.6.33)

इत्येता सरितो विप्राः समाख्याता यथास्मृति । अतऊर्द्ध्वं जनपदान्निबोध गदतो मम

ityetā sarito viprāḥ samākhyātā yathāsmṛti ataūrddhvaṁ janapadānnibodha gadato mama

O brahmins, thus these rivers have been declared as tradition has handed them down. Now hear from me, hereafter, of the inhabited lands as I tell them.

Verse 34 (padma.3.6.34)

तत्रेमे कुरुपांचालाः शाल्वमात्रेय जांगलाः । शूरसेनाः पुलिंदाश्च बौधामालास्तथैव च

tatreme kurupāṁcālāḥ śālvamātreya jāṁgalāḥ śūrasenāḥ puliṁdāśca baudhāmālāstathaiva ca

There [dwell] the Kuru-Panchalas, the Shalvas, the Atreyas, the Jangalas, the Shurasenas, the Pulindas, and likewise the Baudha-Malas,

Verse 35 (padma.3.6.35)

मत्स्याः कुशट्टाः सौगंध्याः कुत्सपाः काशिकोशलाः । चेदिमत्स्यकरूषाश्च भोजाः सिंधुपुलिंदकाः

matsyāḥ kuśaṭṭāḥ saugaṁdhyāḥ kutsapāḥ kāśikośalāḥ cedimatsyakarūṣāśca bhojāḥ siṁdhupuliṁdakāḥ

the Matsyas, the Kushattas, the Saugandhyas, the Kutsapas, the Kashi-Koshalas, the Chedi-Matsya-Karushas, the Bhojas, and the Sindhu-Pulindakas,

Verse 36 (padma.3.6.36)

उत्तमाश्च दशार्णाश्च मेकलाश्चोत्कलैः सह । पंचालाः कोशलाश्चैव नैकपृष्ठयुगंधराः

uttamāśca daśārṇāśca mekalāścotkalaiḥ saha paṁcālāḥ kośalāścaiva naikapṛṣṭhayugaṁdharāḥ

the Uttamas, the Dasharnas, the Mekalas together with the Utkalas, the Panchalas, the Koshalas, and the innumerable Prishtha-Yugandharas,

Verse 37 (padma.3.6.37)

बोधा मद्राः कलिंगाश्च काशयो परकाशयः । जठराः कुकुराश्चैव सुदशार्णाः सुसत्तमाः

bodhā madrāḥ kaliṁgāśca kāśayo parakāśayaḥ jaṭharāḥ kukurāścaiva sudaśārṇāḥ susattamāḥ

the Bodhas, the Madras, the Kalingas, the Kashis and Aparakashis, the Jatharas, the Kukuras, and the excellent Sudasharnas,

Verse 38 (padma.3.6.38)

कुंतयोऽवंतयश्चैव तथैवापरकुंतयः । गोमंता मल्लकाः पुंड्राः विदर्भा नृपवाहिकाः

kuṁtayo'vaṁtayaścaiva tathaivāparakuṁtayaḥ gomaṁtā mallakāḥ puṁḍrāḥ vidarbhā nṛpavāhikāḥ

the Kuntis, the Avantis, and likewise the Aparakuntis, the Gomantas, the Mallakas, the Pundras, the Vidarbhas, and the Nripavahikas,

अश्मकाः सोत्तराश्चैव गोपराष्ट्राः कनीयसः । अधिराज्यकुशट्टाश्च मल्लराष्ट्राश्च केरलाः

aśmakāḥ sottarāścaiva goparāṣṭrāḥ kanīyasaḥ adhirājyakuśaṭṭāśca mallarāṣṭrāśca keralāḥ

the Ashmakas with the Uttaras, the Goparashtras, the lesser states, the Adhirajya-Kushattas, the Mallarashtras, and the Keralas,

मालवाश्चोपवास्याश्च चक्रावक्रालयाः शकाः । विदेहा मगधाः सद्मा मलजा विजयास्तथा

mālavāścopavāsyāśca cakrāvakrālayāḥ śakāḥ videhā magadhāḥ sadmā malajā vijayāstathā

the Malavas and the Upavasyas, the wheel- and crooked-dwelling Shakas, the Videhas, the Magadhas, the Sadmas, the Malajas, and likewise the Vijayas,

अंगा वंगाः कलिंगाश्च यकृल्लोमान एव च । मल्लाः सुदेष्णाः प्रह्लादा महिषाः शशकास्तथा

aṁgā vaṁgāḥ kaliṁgāśca yakṛllomāna eva ca mallāḥ sudeṣṇāḥ prahlādā mahiṣāḥ śaśakāstathā

the Angas, the Vangas, the Kalingas, and the Yakrilloma peoples, the Mallas, the Sudeshnas, the Prahladas, the Mahishas, and the Shashakas,

बाह्लिका वाटधानाश्च आभीराः कालतोयकाः । अपरांताः परांताश्च पंकलाश्चर्मचंडिकाः

bāhlikā vāṭadhānāśca ābhīrāḥ kālatoyakāḥ aparāṁtāḥ parāṁtāśca paṁkalāścarmacaṁḍikāḥ

the Bahlikas, the Vatadhanas, the Abhiras, the Kalatoyakas, the Aparantas and Parantas, the Pankalas, and the Charmachandikas,

Verse 43 (padma.3.6.43)

अटवीशेखराश्चैव मेरुभूताश्च सत्तमाः । उपावृतानुपावृताः सुराष्ट्राः केकयास्तथा

aṭavīśekharāścaiva merubhūtāśca sattamāḥ upāvṛtānupāvṛtāḥ surāṣṭrāḥ kekayāstathā

the forest-crested peoples, the Meru-dwellers, O excellent ones, the Upavritas and Anupavritas, the Surashtras, and the Kekayas,

Verse 44 (padma.3.6.44)

कुट्टापरांता माहेयाः कक्षाः सामुद्र निष्कुटाः । अंधाश्च बहवो विप्रा अंतर्गिर्यस्तथैव च

kuṭṭāparāṁtā māheyāḥ kakṣāḥ sāmudra niṣkuṭāḥ aṁdhāśca bahavo viprā aṁtargiryastathaiva ca

the Kuttaparantas, the Maheyas, the Kacchas, the Samudra-Nishkutas, and, O brahmins, many Andhras, and likewise the dwellers within the mountains,

बहिर्गिर्य्योंगमलदा मगधा मालवार्घटाः । सत्त्वतराः प्रावृषेयाः भार्गवाश्च द्विजर्षभाः

bahirgiryyoṁgamaladā magadhā mālavārghaṭāḥ sattvatarāḥ prāvṛṣeyāḥ bhārgavāśca dvijarṣabhāḥ

the dwellers outside the mountains, the Ongamaladas, the Magadhas, the Malava-Arghatas, the Sattvataras, the Pravrisheyas, and the Bhargavas, O bulls among the twice-born,

Verse 46 (padma.3.6.46)

पुंड्रा भार्गाः किराताश्च सुदेष्णा भासुरास्तथा । शका निषादा निषधास्तथैवानर्त नैऋताः

puṁḍrā bhārgāḥ kirātāśca sudeṣṇā bhāsurāstathā śakā niṣādā niṣadhāstathaivānarta naiṛtāḥ

the Pundras, the Bhargas, the Kiratas, the Sudeshnas, and the Bhasuras, the Shakas, the Nishadas, the Nishadhas, and likewise the Anarta-Nairritas,

पूर्णलाः पूतिमत्स्याश्च कुंतला कुशकास्तथा । तरिग्रहाश्शूरसेना ईजिकाः कल्पकारणाः

pūrṇalāḥ pūtimatsyāśca kuṁtalā kuśakāstathā tarigrahāśśūrasenā ījikāḥ kalpakāraṇāḥ

the Purnalas, the Putimatsyas, the Kuntalas, and the Kushakas, the Tarigraha-Shurasenas, the Ijikas, and the Kalpakaranas,

तिलभागामसाराश्च मधुमत्ताः ककुंदकाः । काश्मीराः सिंधुसौवीरा गांधारा दर्शकास्तथा

द्रोषकाश्च कलिंगाश्च किरातानां च जातयः । तोमरा हन्यमानाश्च तथैव करभंजकाः

droṣakāśca kaliṁgāśca kirātānāṁ ca jātayaḥ tomarā hanyamānāśca tathaiva karabhaṁjakāḥ

the Droshakas, the Kalingas, and the tribes of the Kiratas, the Tomaras, the Hanyamanas, and likewise the Karabhanjakas.

एते चान्ये जनपदाः प्राच्योदीच्यास्तथैव च । उद्देशमात्रेण मया देशाः संकीर्तिता द्विजाः । यथागुणबलं चापि त्रिवर्गस्य महाफलम्

ete cānye janapadāḥ prācyodīcyāstathaiva ca uddeśamātreṇa mayā deśāḥ saṁkīrtitā dvijāḥ yathāguṇabalaṁ cāpi trivargasya mahāphalam

These and other eastern and northern lands, O twice-born, I have enumerated merely by way of brief mention — each, according to its own quality and strength, contributes to the great fruit of dharma, artha, and kama.
