ṛṣaya ūcuḥ varṣāṇāṁ caiva nāmāni parvatānāṁ ca sattama ācakṣva no yathātatvaṁ ye ca parvatavāsinaḥ
The sages said: O excellent one, tell us truly the names of the regions and mountains, and of those who dwell upon the mountains.
Verse 2 (padma.3.5.2)
sūta uvāca dakṣiṇena tu śvetasya niṣadhasyottareṇa tu varṣaṁ ramaṇakaṁ nāma jāyaṁte tatra mānavāḥ
Suta said: South of the Shveta mountain and north of Nishadha is the region named Ramyaka, where men are born
Verse 3 (padma.3.5.3)
śuklābhijanasaṁpannāḥ sarve te priyadarśanāḥ niḥsapatnāśca te sarve jāyaṁte tatra mānavāḥ
endowed with a pure lineage, all lovely to behold; all the people born there are without rival or enemy.
Verse 4 (padma.3.5.4)
daśavarṣasahasrāṇi śatāni daśapaṁca ca jīvaṁti te mahābhāgā nityaṁ muditamānasāḥ
O greatly fortunate ones, they live eleven thousand five hundred years, ever glad of mind.
Verse 5 (padma.3.5.5)
dakṣiṇena tu nīlasya niṣadhasyottareṇa tu varṣaṁ hiraṇmayaṁ nāma yatra hairaṇvatī nadī
South of Mount Nila and north of Nishadha is the region named Hiranmaya, where the river Hairanvati flows,
Verse 6 (padma.3.5.6)
yatra cāyaṁ mahāprājñāḥ pakṣirāṭpatagottamaḥ yajñānugā vipravarā dhanvinaḥ priyadarśanāḥ
and where, O greatly wise ones, this king of birds, foremost among winged creatures, attends the sacrifice, accompanied by bow-bearing, lovely brahmin-lords.
Verse 7 (padma.3.5.7)
mahābalāstatra janā viprā muditamānasāḥ ekādaśasahasrāṇi varṣāṇāṁ te tapodhanāḥ
There dwell mighty, glad-hearted brahmins, O ascetics, whose lifespan is eleven thousand years —
Verse 8 (padma.3.5.8)
āyuḥpramāṇaṁ jīvaṁti śatāni daśa paṁca ca śṛṁgāṇi ca pavitrāṇi trīṇyeva dvijapuṁgavāḥ
such is the measure of their life, fifteen hundred years more besides. O bulls among the twice-born, there are three sacred peaks there —
Verse 9 (padma.3.5.9)
ekaṁ maṇimayaṁ tatra tathaikaṁ rukmamadbhutam sarvaratnamayaṁ caikaṁ bhavanairupaśobhitam
one made of gems, one of wondrous gold, and one made of every jewel, adorned with mansions.
Verse 10 (padma.3.5.10)
tatra svayaṁ prabhādevī nityaṁ vasati śaṁḍinī uttareṇa tu śṛṁgasya samudrāṁte dvijottamāḥ
There the goddess Prabha herself, known as Shandini, ever dwells. O best of the twice-born, north of that peak, at the edge of the ocean,
Verse 11 (padma.3.5.11)
varṣamairāvataṁ nāma tasmācchṛṁgavataḥ param na tu tatra sūryagatirjīryaṁte na ca mānavāḥ
beyond Mount Shringavan, is the region named Airavata. There the sun's course does not affect them as elsewhere, nor do men grow old,
Verse 12 (padma.3.5.12)
caṁdramāśca sanakṣatro jyotirbhūta ivāvṛtaḥ padmaprabhāḥ padmavarṇāḥ padmapatranibhekṣaṇāḥ
and the moon with the stars remains as though wrapped in a covering of light. The people there are lotus-radiant, lotus-hued, their eyes like lotus petals,
Verse 13 (padma.3.5.13)
padmapatrasugaṁdhāśca jāyaṁte tatra mānavāḥ aniṣpannā naṣṭagaṁdhā nirāhārā jiteṁdriyāḥ
fragrant as lotus petals; they are unblemished, free from any foul scent, without need of food, and of fully mastered senses.
Verse 14 (padma.3.5.14)
devalokacyutāḥ sarve tathā virajaso dvijāḥ trayodaśasahasrāṇi varṣāṇāṁ te dvijottamāḥ
All of them, fallen from the world of the gods, are twice-born free from the taint of passion. O best of the twice-born, for thirteen thousand years,
Verse 15 (padma.3.5.15)
āyuḥpramāṇaṁ jīvaṁti narā dhārmikapuṁgavāḥ kṣīrodasya samudrasya tathaivottarataḥ prabhuḥ
such righteous, noble men live out their span. And likewise, to the north of the Ocean of Milk, the Lord —
Verse 16 (padma.3.5.16)
haristiṣṭhati vaikuṁṭhaḥ śakaṭe kanakāmaye aṣṭacakraṁ hi tadyānaṁ bhūtayuktaṁ manojavam
Hari, Vaikuntha, dwells upon a golden chariot; that vehicle has eight wheels, drawn by living beings, swift as thought,
Verse 17 (padma.3.5.17)
agnivarṇaṁ mahātejo jāṁbūnadavibhūṣitam sa prabhuḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ vibhuśca dvijasattamāḥ
fire-hued, of great radiance, adorned with jambunada gold. O best of the twice-born, that Lord is the master and ruler of all beings.
Verse 18 (padma.3.5.18)
saṁkṣepe vistare caiva kartā kārayitā tathā pṛthivyāpastathākāśaṁ vāyustejaśca sattamāḥ
In brief and in detail, he is both the doer and the one who causes to be done; O excellent ones, earth, water, space, air, and fire —
Verse 19 (padma.3.5.19)
sa yajñaḥ sarvabhūtānāmāsyaṁ tasya hutāśanaḥ
he himself is the sacrifice of all beings, and fire is his mouth.
