The Dialogue Between Suratha and the Messenger
Verse 1 (padma.5.50.1)
शेष उवाच। अथ रामानुजो वेगात्समागत्य स्वसेवकान् । पप्रच्छ कुत्र वाहोऽसौ याज्ञिकः सुमनोहरः
śeṣa uvāca atha rāmānujo vegātsamāgatya svasevakān papraccha kutra vāho'sau yājñikaḥ sumanoharaḥ
Shesha said: Then Rama's younger brother, coming swiftly, asked his own servants: "Where is that most lovely sacrificial horse?"
Verse 2 (padma.5.50.2)
तदा ते वचनं प्रोचुः शत्रुघ्नं सुमहाबलाः । न जानीमो भटाः केचिद्धयं नीत्वा गताः पुरे
tadā te vacanaṁ procuḥ śatrughnaṁ sumahābalāḥ na jānīmo bhaṭāḥ keciddhayaṁ nītvā gatāḥ pure
Then those very mighty servants said this to Shatrughna: "We do not know, O hero — some warriors have taken the horse away into the city."
Verse 3 (padma.5.50.3)
वयं च धिक्कृताः सर्वे बलिभी राजसेवकैः । अत्र प्रमाणं भगवानिति कर्तव्य तां प्रति
vayaṁ ca dhikkṛtāḥ sarve balibhī rājasevakaiḥ atra pramāṇaṁ bhagavāniti kartavya tāṁ prati
"We were all rebuked by that king's mighty servants — 'The Lord himself is authority here,' they said, and treated us accordingly."
Verse 4 (padma.5.50.4)
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तेषां शत्रुघ्नः कुपितो भृशम् । दशन्रोषात्स्वदशनाञ्जिह्वया लेलिहन्मुहुः
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ teṣāṁ śatrughnaḥ kupito bhṛśam daśanroṣātsvadaśanāñjihvayā lelihanmuhuḥ
Hearing their words, Shatrughna grew intensely angry, gnashing his own teeth in fury, licking them again and again with his tongue.
Verse 5 (padma.5.50.5)
उवाच वीरो मद्वाहं हृत्वा कुत्र गमिष्यसि । इदानीं पातये बाणैः पुरंजनसमन्वितम्
uvāca vīro madvāhaṁ hṛtvā kutra gamiṣyasi idānīṁ pātaye bāṇaiḥ puraṁjanasamanvitam
That hero said: "Having stolen my horse, where will you go? Now I shall fell you with my arrows, together with your whole city."
Verse 6 (padma.5.50.6)
इत्युक्त्वा सुमतिं प्राह कस्येदं पुटभेदनम् । को वर्ततेऽस्याधिपतिर्यो मे वाहमजीहरत्
ityuktvā sumatiṁ prāha kasyedaṁ puṭabhedanam ko vartate'syādhipatiryo me vāhamajīharat
Having spoken thus, he said to Sumati: "Whose city is this? Who is its lord, who has stolen my horse?"
Verse 7 (padma.5.50.7)
शेष उवाच। इति वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य भूपतेः कोपसंयुतम् । जगाद मंत्री सुगिरा स्फुटाक्षरसमन्वितम्
śeṣa uvāca iti vākyaṁ samākarṇya bhūpateḥ kopasaṁyutam jagāda maṁtrī sugirā sphuṭākṣarasamanvitam
Shesha said: Hearing these words of the king, filled with fury, the minister spoke in a fine voice, in clear-uttered syllables —
Verse 8 (padma.5.50.8)
विद्धीदं कुंडलं नाम नगरं सुमनोहरम् । अस्मिन्वसति धर्मात्मा सुरथः क्षत्त्रियो बली
viddhīdaṁ kuṁḍalaṁ nāma nagaraṁ sumanoharam asminvasati dharmātmā surathaḥ kṣattriyo balī
"Know this to be the most lovely city named Kundala; here dwells the righteous kshatriya Suratha, mighty as he is."
Verse 9 (padma.5.50.9)
नित्यं धर्मपरो रामचरणद्वंद्वसेवकः । मनसा कर्मणा वाचा हनूमानिव सेवकः
nityaṁ dharmaparo rāmacaraṇadvaṁdvasevakaḥ manasā karmaṇā vācā hanūmāniva sevakaḥ
"Ever devoted to Dharma, a servant of Rama's own two feet, he is, in mind, deed, and speech, a servant like Hanuman himself."
Verse 10 (padma.5.50.10)
चरितान्यस्य शतशो वर्तंते धर्मकारिणः । महाबलपरीवारः सुरथः सर्वशोभनः
caritānyasya śataśo vartaṁte dharmakāriṇaḥ mahābalaparīvāraḥ surathaḥ sarvaśobhanaḥ
"His righteous deeds are recounted a hundred times over; Suratha, surrounded by a mighty army, is resplendent in every way."
Verse 11 (padma.5.50.11)
महद्युद्धं भवेदत्र हृतश्चेद्वाहसत्तमः । अनेके प्रपतिष्यंति वीरा रणविशारदाः
mahadyuddhaṁ bhavedatra hṛtaścedvāhasattamaḥ aneke prapatiṣyaṁti vīrā raṇaviśāradāḥ
"If that finest of horses were seized by force, a great war would follow here; many heroes skilled in warfare would fall."
Verse 12 (padma.5.50.12)
एवमुक्तं समाश्रुत्य शत्रुघ्नः सचिवं प्रति । उवाच पुनरप्येवं वचनं वदतां वरः
evamuktaṁ samāśrutya śatrughnaḥ sacivaṁ prati uvāca punarapyevaṁ vacanaṁ vadatāṁ varaḥ
Hearing this, Shatrughna, foremost among speakers, said once again to his minister —
Verse 13 (padma.5.50.13)
शत्रुघ्न उवाच। कथमत्र प्रकर्तव्यं रामाश्वोऽनेन चेद्धृतः । नायाति योद्धुं प्रबलं कटकं वीरसेवितम्
śatrughna uvāca kathamatra prakartavyaṁ rāmāśvo'nena ceddhṛtaḥ nāyāti yoddhuṁ prabalaṁ kaṭakaṁ vīrasevitam
Shatrughna said: "If he has indeed taken Rama's horse, and does not come to fight this mighty army, attended by heroes, what is to be done here?"
Verse 14 (padma.5.50.14)
सुमतिरुवाच। दूतः प्रेष्यो महाराज राजानं प्रति वाग्मिकः । यद्वाक्येन समायाति बलेन बलिनां वरः
sumatiruvāca dūtaḥ preṣyo mahārāja rājānaṁ prati vāgmikaḥ yadvākyena samāyāti balena balināṁ varaḥ
Sumati said: "A skilled envoy should be sent, great king, to that king; by whose words that best of the mighty may come here with his forces —"
Verse 15 (padma.5.50.15)
नोचेदज्ञानतो वाहो धृतः केनापि मानिना । अर्पयिष्यति नः साधुमश्वं क्रतुवरं शुभम्
nocedajñānato vāho dhṛtaḥ kenāpi māninā arpayiṣyati naḥ sādhumaśvaṁ kratuvaraṁ śubham
"— or, if some proud man seized the horse unknowingly, he will hand over to us that fine and auspicious horse, finest for the sacrifice."
Verse 16 (padma.5.50.16)
इति श्रुत्वातु तद्वाक्यं शत्रुघ्नो बुद्धिमान्बली । अंगदं प्रत्युवाचेदं वचनं विनयान्वितम्
iti śrutvātu tadvākyaṁ śatrughno buddhimānbalī aṁgadaṁ pratyuvācedaṁ vacanaṁ vinayānvitam
Hearing these words, wise and mighty Shatrughna replied to Angada with words full of courtesy —
Verse 17 (padma.5.50.17)
शत्रुघ्न उवाच। याहि त्वं निकटस्थे वै सुरथस्य महापुरे । दूतत्वेन ततो गत्वा प्रब्रूहि नृपतिं प्रति
śatrughna uvāca yāhi tvaṁ nikaṭasthe vai surathasya mahāpure dūtatvena tato gatvā prabrūhi nṛpatiṁ prati
Shatrughna said: "Go to that great city of Suratha, nearby; going there as an envoy, say to that king —"
Verse 18 (padma.5.50.18)
त्वया धृतो रामवाहो ज्ञानतोऽज्ञानतोपि वा । अर्पयतु न वा यातु प्रधनं वीरसंयुतम्
tvayā dhṛto rāmavāho jñānato'jñānatopi vā arpayatu na vā yātu pradhanaṁ vīrasaṁyutam
"— whether you took Rama's horse knowingly or unknowingly, give it over — or else come out to battle, together with your heroes."
Verse 19 (padma.5.50.19)
रामस्य दौत्यं लंकायां रावणं प्रति यत्कृतम् । तथैव कुरु भूयिष्ठ बलसंयुतबुद्धिमन्
rāmasya dautyaṁ laṁkāyāṁ rāvaṇaṁ prati yatkṛtam tathaiva kuru bhūyiṣṭha balasaṁyutabuddhiman
"The very embassy Rama once undertook toward Ravana in Lanka — do the same here again, O wise and mighty one."
Verse 20 (padma.5.50.20)
शेष उवाच। एतच्छ्रुत्वांगदो वीर ओमिति प्रोच्य भूमिपम् । जगाम संसदो मध्ये वीरश्रेणिसमन्विते
śeṣa uvāca etacchrutvāṁgado vīra omiti procya bhūmipam jagāma saṁsado madhye vīraśreṇisamanvite
Shesha said: Hearing this, the hero Angada said "So be it" to the king, and entered into the midst of that assembly, thronged with ranks of heroes.
Verse 21 (padma.5.50.21)
ददर्श सुरथं भूपं तुलसीमंजरीधरम् । रामभद्रं रसनया ब्रुवंतं सेवकान्निजान्
dadarśa surathaṁ bhūpaṁ tulasīmaṁjarīdharam rāmabhadraṁ rasanayā bruvaṁtaṁ sevakānnijān
There he beheld King Suratha, bearing a garland of tulasi, telling his own servants of Ramabhadra with his own tongue.
Verse 22 (padma.5.50.22)
राजापि दृष्ट्वा प्लवगं मनोहरवपुर्धरम् । शत्रुघ्नदूतं मत्वापि वालिजं प्रत्यभाषत
rājāpi dṛṣṭvā plavagaṁ manoharavapurdharam śatrughnadūtaṁ matvāpi vālijaṁ pratyabhāṣata
The king too, seeing that monkey of such lovely form, knowing him to be Shatrughna's envoy, spoke to that son of Vali.
Verse 23 (padma.5.50.23)
सुरथ उवाच। प्लवगाधिप कस्मात्त्वमागतोऽत्र कथं भवान् । ब्रूहि मे कारणं सर्वं यथा ज्ञात्वा करोमि तत्
suratha uvāca plavagādhipa kasmāttvamāgato'tra kathaṁ bhavān brūhi me kāraṇaṁ sarvaṁ yathā jñātvā karomi tat
Suratha said: "O lord of monkeys, whence have you come, and how do you come here? Tell me the whole reason, so that, knowing it, I may act accordingly."
Verse 24 (padma.5.50.24)
शेष उवाच। इति संभाषमाणं तं प्रत्युवाच कपीश्वरः । विस्मयंश्चेतसि भृशं रामसेवाकरं नृपम्
śeṣa uvāca iti saṁbhāṣamāṇaṁ taṁ pratyuvāca kapīśvaraḥ vismayaṁścetasi bhṛśaṁ rāmasevākaraṁ nṛpam
Shesha said: To him speaking thus, the lord of monkeys replied, greatly astonished at heart by that king so devoted to Rama's service —
Verse 25 (padma.5.50.25)
जानीहि मां नृपश्रेष्ठ वालिपुत्रं हरीश्वरम् । शत्रुघ्नेन च दूतत्वे प्रेषितो भवतोंऽतिकम्
jānīhi māṁ nṛpaśreṣṭha vāliputraṁ harīśvaram śatrughnena ca dūtatve preṣito bhavatoṁ'tikam
"Know me, O best of kings, to be Vali's own son, lord of monkeys; sent by Shatrughna as an envoy into your presence."
Verse 26 (padma.5.50.26)
सेवकैः कैश्चिदागत्य धृतोऽश्वो मम सांप्रतम् । अज्ञानतो महान्याय्यं कुर्वद्भिः सहसा नृप
sevakaiḥ kaiścidāgatya dhṛto'śvo mama sāṁpratam ajñānato mahānyāyyaṁ kurvadbhiḥ sahasā nṛpa
"Some of your servants have come and taken my horse just now, O king, unknowingly committing this great wrong."
Verse 27 (padma.5.50.27)
तमश्वं सह राज्येन सहपुत्रैर्मुदान्वितः । शत्रुघ्नं याहि चरणे पतित्वाशु प्रदेहि च
tamaśvaṁ saha rājyena sahaputrairmudānvitaḥ śatrughnaṁ yāhi caraṇe patitvāśu pradehi ca
"Together with your kingdom and your sons, go joyfully, fall at Shatrughna's feet, and give that horse over at once."
Verse 28 (padma.5.50.28)
नोचेच्छत्रुघ्ननिर्मुक्तनाराचैः क्षतविग्रहः । पृथ्वीतलमलं कुर्वञ्छयिष्यसि विशीर्षकः
nocecchatrughnanirmuktanārācaiḥ kṣatavigrahaḥ pṛthvītalamalaṁ kurvañchayiṣyasi viśīrṣakaḥ
"Otherwise, your body wounded by the arrows loosed by Shatrughna, you shall lie headless, covering the very surface of the earth."
Verse 29 (padma.5.50.29)
येन लंकापतिर्नाशं प्रापितो लीलया क्षणात् । तस्याश्वं यागयोग्यं तु हृत्वा कुत्र गमिष्यसि
yena laṁkāpatirnāśaṁ prāpito līlayā kṣaṇāt tasyāśvaṁ yāgayogyaṁ tu hṛtvā kutra gamiṣyasi
"By whom the lord of Lanka was destroyed in a moment, in mere play — having stolen the sacrificial horse of that very lord, where will you go?"
Verse 30 (padma.5.50.30)
शेष उवाच। इत्यादिभाषमाणं तं प्रत्युवाच महीश्वरः । सर्वं तथ्यं ब्रवीषि त्वं नानृतं तव भाषितम्
śeṣa uvāca ityādibhāṣamāṇaṁ taṁ pratyuvāca mahīśvaraḥ sarvaṁ tathyaṁ bravīṣi tvaṁ nānṛtaṁ tava bhāṣitam
Shesha said: To him speaking thus, the king replied: "All that you say is true; there is no falsehood in your speech."
Verse 31 (padma.5.50.31)
परं शृणुष्व मद्वाक्यं शत्रुघ्नपदसेवक । मया धृतो महानश्वो रामचंद्रस्य धीमतः
paraṁ śṛṇuṣva madvākyaṁ śatrughnapadasevaka mayā dhṛto mahānaśvo rāmacaṁdrasya dhīmataḥ
"But hear my own words too, O servant at Shatrughna's feet: I have indeed seized the great horse of wise Ramachandra —"
Verse 32 (padma.5.50.32)
न मोक्ष्ये सर्वथा वाहं शत्रुघ्नादिभयादहम् । चेद्रामः स्वयमागत्य दर्शनं दास्यते मम
na mokṣye sarvathā vāhaṁ śatrughnādibhayādaham cedrāmaḥ svayamāgatya darśanaṁ dāsyate mama
"— and I shall never release the horse for fear of Shatrughna or the rest, not until Rama himself comes and grants me his own darshan."
Verse 33 (padma.5.50.33)
तदाहं चरणौ नत्वा दास्यामि सुतसंयुतः । सर्वं राज्यं कुटुंबं च धनं धान्यं बलं बहु
tadāhaṁ caraṇau natvā dāsyāmi sutasaṁyutaḥ sarvaṁ rājyaṁ kuṭuṁbaṁ ca dhanaṁ dhānyaṁ balaṁ bahu
"Then, bowing at his feet, I shall give over, together with my sons, my entire kingdom, my family, my wealth, my grain, and all my strength."
Verse 34 (padma.5.50.34)
क्षत्त्रियाणामयं धर्मः स्वामिनापि विरुद्ध्यते। धर्मेण युद्धं तत्रापि रामदर्शनमिच्छता
kṣattriyāṇāmayaṁ dharmaḥ svāmināpi viruddhyate dharmeṇa yuddhaṁ tatrāpi rāmadarśanamicchatā
"This is the very duty of kshatriyas — it holds even against one's own lord; and even there, one who desires the sight of Rama fights in accordance with Dharma."
Verse 35 (padma.5.50.35)
शत्रुघ्नादीन्प्रवीरांस्तानधुनाहं क्षणादपि । जित्वा बध्नामि मद्गेहे नोचेद्रामः समाव्रजेत्
śatrughnādīnpravīrāṁstānadhunāhaṁ kṣaṇādapi jitvā badhnāmi madgehe nocedrāmaḥ samāvrajet
"Shatrughna and those other great heroes I shall now conquer in an instant and bind fast in my own house, until Rama himself appears."
Verse 36 (padma.5.50.36)
शेष उवाच। इति श्रुत्वांगदो धीमाञ्जहास नृपतिं तदा । उवाच च महद्वाक्यं महाधैर्यसमन्वितम्
śeṣa uvāca iti śrutvāṁgado dhīmāñjahāsa nṛpatiṁ tadā uvāca ca mahadvākyaṁ mahādhairyasamanvitam
Shesha said: Hearing this, wise Angada laughed at the king, and spoke a great speech, filled with the greatest resolve —
Verse 37 (padma.5.50.37)
अंगद उवाच। बुद्धिहीनः प्रवदसि वृद्धत्वात्सागता तव । यत्त्वं शत्रुघ्ननृपतिं धिक्करोषि धिया बली
aṁgada uvāca buddhihīnaḥ pravadasi vṛddhatvātsāgatā tava yattvaṁ śatrughnanṛpatiṁ dhikkaroṣi dhiyā balī
Angada said: "You speak without wisdom — this has come upon you with your old age — that, mighty as you are, you should think and speak thus against King Shatrughna."
Verse 38 (padma.5.50.38)
यो मांधातृरिपुं दैत्यं लवणं लीलयावधीत् । येनानेके जिताः संख्ये वैरिणः प्रबलोद्धताः
yo māṁdhātṛripuṁ daityaṁ lavaṇaṁ līlayāvadhīt yenāneke jitāḥ saṁkhye vairiṇaḥ prabaloddhatāḥ
"He who slew, in mere play, the demon Lavana, foe of Mandhatri; by whom many powerful and proud foes have been conquered in battle —"
Verse 39 (padma.5.50.39)
विद्युन्माली हतो येन राक्षसः कामगे स्थितः । त्वं तं बध्नासि वीरेंद्रं मतिहीनः प्रभासि मे
vidyunmālī hato yena rākṣasaḥ kāmage sthitaḥ tvaṁ taṁ badhnāsi vīreṁdraṁ matihīnaḥ prabhāsi me
"— by whom Vidyunmali, the rakshasa who could move at will, was slain — that very lord of heroes you would bind! You seem to me lacking all judgment."
Verse 40 (padma.5.50.40)
भ्रातृजो यस्य सुबली पुष्कलः परमास्त्रवित् । येन रुद्रगणः संख्ये वीरभद्रः सुतोषितः
bhrātṛjo yasya subalī puṣkalaḥ paramāstravit yena rudragaṇaḥ saṁkhye vīrabhadraḥ sutoṣitaḥ
"His younger brother's own son, mighty Pushkala, master of the supreme weapons; by whom Virabhadra, that gana of Rudra, was well satisfied in battle —"
Verse 41 (padma.5.50.41)
वर्णयामि किमेतस्य पराक्रांतिं बलोर्जिताम् । येन नास्ति समः पृथ्व्यां बलेन यशसा श्रिया
varṇayāmi kimetasya parākrāṁtiṁ balorjitām yena nāsti samaḥ pṛthvyāṁ balena yaśasā śriyā
"— what shall I say in describing his strength-laden prowess? There is none on this earth equal to him in strength, in fame, in glory."
Verse 42 (padma.5.50.42)
हनूमान्यस्य निकटे रघुनाथपदाब्जधीः । यस्यानेकानि कर्माणि भविष्यंति श्रुतानि ते
hanūmānyasya nikaṭe raghunāthapadābjadhīḥ yasyānekāni karmāṇi bhaviṣyaṁti śrutāni te
"Hanuman, his mind fixed upon the lotus-feet of Raghunatha, stands always at his very side; his many deeds are still to reach your ears."
Verse 43 (padma.5.50.43)
सत्रिकूटा राक्षसपूर्दग्धा येन क्षणाद्बलात् । अक्षो येन हतः पुत्रो राक्षसेंद्रस्य दुर्मतेः
satrikūṭā rākṣasapūrdagdhā yena kṣaṇādbalāt akṣo yena hataḥ putro rākṣaseṁdrasya durmateḥ
"By whom the rakshasa city, with its three peaks, was burned by force in an instant; by whom Aksha, son of that evil-minded lord of rakshasas, was slain —"
Verse 44 (padma.5.50.44)
द्रोणोनाम गिरिर्येन पुच्छाग्रेण सदैवतः । आनीतो जीवनार्थं तु सैनिकानां मुहुर्मुहुः
droṇonāma giriryena pucchāgreṇa sadaivataḥ ānīto jīvanārthaṁ tu sainikānāṁ muhurmuhuḥ
"— by whom the mountain named Drona, together with its own gods, was carried by the tip of his very tail, again and again, for the lives of the soldiers."
Verse 45 (padma.5.50.45)
जानाति रामश्चारित्रं नान्यो जानाति मूढधीः । यं कपींद्रं मनाक्स्वान्तान्न विस्मरति सेवकम्
jānāti rāmaścāritraṁ nānyo jānāti mūḍhadhīḥ yaṁ kapīṁdraṁ manāksvāntānna vismarati sevakam
"Rama alone truly knows his character; no other, deluded in mind, knows it — that lord of monkeys whom he never forgets in his heart, even for an instant, as his own servant."
Verse 46 (padma.5.50.46)
सुग्रीवाद्याः कपींद्रा ये पृथ्वीं सर्वां ग्रसंति ये । ते शत्रुघ्नं नृपं सर्वे सेवंते प्रेक्षणोत्सुकाः
sugrīvādyāḥ kapīṁdrā ye pṛthvīṁ sarvāṁ grasaṁti ye te śatrughnaṁ nṛpaṁ sarve sevaṁte prekṣaṇotsukāḥ
"Sugriva and the other lords of monkeys who could encompass the whole earth — all of them serve King Shatrughna, eager only for the sight of him."
Verse 47 (padma.5.50.47)
कुशध्वजो नीलरत्नो रिपुतापो महास्त्रवित् । प्रतापाग्र्यः सुबाहुश्च विमलः सुमदस्तथा
kuśadhvajo nīlaratno riputāpo mahāstravit pratāpāgryaḥ subāhuśca vimalaḥ sumadastathā
"Kushadhvaja, Nilaratna, Riputapa the master of great weapons; Pratapagrya, Subahu, Vimala, and Sumada as well —"
Verse 48 (padma.5.50.48)
राजा वीरमणिः सत्ययुतो रामस्य सेवकः । एतेऽन्येपि नृपा भूमेः पतयः पर्युपासते
rājā vīramaṇiḥ satyayuto rāmasya sevakaḥ ete'nyepi nṛpā bhūmeḥ patayaḥ paryupāsate
"— and King Viramani, endowed with truth, a servant of Rama — these and other kings, lords of the earth, stand ever in attendance upon him."
Verse 49 (padma.5.50.49)
तत्र त्वं वीर जलधौ मशकः को भवानिति । तज्ज्ञात्वा गच्छ शत्रुघ्नं कृपालुं पुत्रकैर्युतः
tatra tvaṁ vīra jaladhau maśakaḥ ko bhavāniti tajjñātvā gaccha śatrughnaṁ kṛpāluṁ putrakairyutaḥ
"There, O hero, what mosquito are you, set against that ocean? Knowing this, go now, together with your sons, to merciful Shatrughna."
Verse 50 (padma.5.50.50)
वाहं समर्प्य गंतासि रामं राजीवलोचनम् । दृष्ट्वा कृतार्थी कुरुषे स्वांगानि जनुषा सह
vāhaṁ samarpya gaṁtāsi rāmaṁ rājīvalocanam dṛṣṭvā kṛtārthī kuruṣe svāṁgāni januṣā saha
"Having given over the horse, you shall go and behold Rama, the lotus-eyed one; by his very sight you shall make fulfilled your own body and your own birth."
Verse 51 (padma.5.50.51)
शेष उवाच। राजा प्रोवाच तं दूतं प्रब्रुवंतमनेकधा । एतान्दर्शयसि क्षिप्रं सर्वे न ममगोचराः
śeṣa uvāca rājā provāca taṁ dūtaṁ prabruvaṁtamanekadhā etāndarśayasi kṣipraṁ sarve na mamagocarāḥ
Shesha said: To that envoy speaking thus in many ways, the king replied: "All this you show me in such haste — but none of it lies beyond my own reach."
Verse 52 (padma.5.50.52)
यादृशं मद्बलं दूत तादृशं न हनूमतः । यो रामं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा प्रागाद्यागस्य पालने
yādṛśaṁ madbalaṁ dūta tādṛśaṁ na hanūmataḥ yo rāmaṁ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā prāgādyāgasya pālane
"O envoy, whatever strength I possess is no less than Hanuman's — he who set out ahead to guard the sacrifice, leaving even Rama behind him."
Verse 53 (padma.5.50.53)
यद्यहं मनसा वाचा कर्मणा कुतुकान्वितः । भजामि रामं तर्ह्याशु दर्शयिष्यति स्वां तनुम्
yadyahaṁ manasā vācā karmaṇā kutukānvitaḥ bhajāmi rāmaṁ tarhyāśu darśayiṣyati svāṁ tanum
"If I, in mind, speech, and deed, filled with eager devotion, truly worship Rama — then he shall swiftly show me his own form."
Verse 54 (padma.5.50.54)
अन्यथा हनुमन्मुख्या वीरा बध्नंतु मां बलात् । गृह्णंतु वाहं तरसा रामभक्तिसमन्विताः
anyathā hanumanmukhyā vīrā badhnaṁtu māṁ balāt gṛhṇaṁtu vāhaṁ tarasā rāmabhaktisamanvitāḥ
"Otherwise, let Hanuman and the other foremost heroes bind me by force; devoted as they are to Rama, let them swiftly seize the horse."
Verse 55 (padma.5.50.55)
गच्छ त्वं नृप शत्रुघ्नं कथयस्व ममोदितम् । सज्जीभवंतु सुभटा एष यामि रणे बली
gaccha tvaṁ nṛpa śatrughnaṁ kathayasva mamoditam sajjībhavaṁtu subhaṭā eṣa yāmi raṇe balī
"Go now, and tell Shatrughna what I have said: let his finest warriors make ready — I too go forth, mighty, into that battle."
Verse 56 (padma.5.50.56)
स विचार्य यथायुक्तं करिष्यति रणांगणे । मोचयंतु महावाहं न वामा मा ददंतु ते
sa vicārya yathāyuktaṁ kariṣyati raṇāṁgaṇe mocayaṁtu mahāvāhaṁ na vāmā mā dadaṁtu te
"Let him consider well and do whatever is fitting upon that battlefield; let them see the great horse released — let them show it no ill will."
Verse 57 (padma.5.50.57)
शेष उवाच। इति श्रुत्वास्मि तं कृत्वा ययौ वीरो यतो नृपः । गत्वा निवेदयामास यथोक्तं सुरथेन वै
śeṣa uvāca iti śrutvāsmi taṁ kṛtvā yayau vīro yato nṛpaḥ gatvā nivedayāmāsa yathoktaṁ surathena vai
Shesha said: Hearing this, that hero took his leave and went to where the king was; going there, he reported everything just as Suratha had said.
