The Rite of Initiation and Shiva's Secret
Verse 1 (padma.5.82.1)
शिव उवाच- अथ दीक्षाविधिं वक्ष्ये शृणु नारद तत्त्वतः । श्रवणादेव मुच्येत विना तस्य विधानतः
śiva uvāca- atha dīkṣāvidhiṁ vakṣye śṛṇu nārada tattvataḥ śravaṇādeva mucyeta vinā tasya vidhānataḥ
Shiva said: "Now I shall tell the rite of initiation; listen, Narada, in truth. One is freed by mere hearing of it, even without its formal performance."
Verse 2 (padma.5.82.2)
आविरंच्याज्जगत्सर्वं विज्ञाय नश्वरं बुधः । आध्यात्मिकादि त्रिविध दुःखमेवानुभूय च
āviraṁcyājjagatsarvaṁ vijñāya naśvaraṁ budhaḥ ādhyātmikādi trividha duḥkhamevānubhūya ca
"Having, by the grace of Virinchi, come to know the whole world as perishable, the wise man, having experienced the threefold sorrow — spiritual and the rest,"
Verse 3 (padma.5.82.3)
अनित्यत्वाच्च सर्वेषां सुखानां मुनिसत्तम । दुःखपक्षे विनिक्षिप्य तानि तेभ्यो विवर्जितः
anityatvācca sarveṣāṁ sukhānāṁ munisattama duḥkhapakṣe vinikṣipya tāni tebhyo vivarjitaḥ
"and because of the impermanence of all pleasures, O best of sages, having cast them onto the side of suffering, becomes free of them,"
Verse 4 (padma.5.82.4)
विरज्य संसृतेर्हानौ साधनानि विचिंतयेत् । अनुत्तमसुखस्यापि संप्राप्तौ भृशनिर्वृतः
virajya saṁsṛterhānau sādhanāni viciṁtayet anuttamasukhasyāpi saṁprāptau bhṛśanirvṛtaḥ
"growing detached at the diminishing of worldly existence, he should reflect upon the means. Even upon attaining the highest happiness, being exceedingly content,"
Verse 5 (padma.5.82.5)
नराणां दुष्करत्वं हि विज्ञाय च महामतिः । भृशमार्त्तस्ततो विप्र मां गुरुं शरणं व्रजेत्
narāṇāṁ duṣkaratvaṁ hi vijñāya ca mahāmatiḥ bhṛśamārttastato vipra māṁ guruṁ śaraṇaṁ vrajet
"yet knowing the difficulty men face, that great-minded one, exceedingly distressed, O brahmin, should then go for refuge to a guru, to me."
Verse 6 (padma.5.82.6)
शांतो विमत्सरः कृष्णे भक्तोऽनन्यप्रयोजनः । अनन्यसाधनः श्रीमान्कामलोभविवर्जितः
śāṁto vimatsaraḥ kṛṣṇe bhakto'nanyaprayojanaḥ ananyasādhanaḥ śrīmānkāmalobhavivarjitaḥ
"Peaceful, free of envy, devoted to Krishna, having no other purpose, having no other means, glorious, free of desire and greed,"
Verse 7 (padma.5.82.7)
श्रीकृष्णरसतत्त्वज्ञः कृष्णमंत्रविदां वरः । कृष्णमंत्राश्रयो नित्यं मंत्रभक्तः सदा शुचिः
śrīkṛṣṇarasatattvajñaḥ kṛṣṇamaṁtravidāṁ varaḥ kṛṣṇamaṁtrāśrayo nityaṁ maṁtrabhaktaḥ sadā śuciḥ
"knowing the truth of Krishna's sweetness, foremost among knowers of the Krishna-mantra, ever resorting to the Krishna-mantra, ever devoted to the mantra, ever pure,"
Verse 8 (padma.5.82.8)
सद्धर्मशासकोनित्यं सदाचारनियोजकः । संप्रदायी कृपापूर्णो विरागी गुरुरुच्यते
saddharmaśāsakonityaṁ sadācāraniyojakaḥ saṁpradāyī kṛpāpūrṇo virāgī gururucyate
"ever a teacher of true dharma, ever established in good conduct, a transmitter of tradition, full of compassion, dispassionate — such a one is called a guru."
Verse 9 (padma.5.82.9)
एवमादिगुणः प्रायः शुश्रूषुर्गुरुपादयोः । गुरौ नितांतभक्तश्च मुमुक्षुः शिष्य उच्यते
evamādiguṇaḥ prāyaḥ śuśrūṣurgurupādayoḥ gurau nitāṁtabhaktaśca mumukṣuḥ śiṣya ucyate
"One possessed of such qualities, generally desirous of serving at the guru's feet, exceedingly devoted to the guru, seeking liberation — such a one is called a disciple."
Verse 10 (padma.5.82.10)
यत्साक्षात्सेवनं तस्य प्रेम्णा भागवतो भवेत् । स मोक्षः प्रोच्यते प्राज्ञैर्वेदवेदांगवेदिभिः
yatsākṣātsevanaṁ tasya premṇā bhāgavato bhavet sa mokṣaḥ procyate prājñairvedavedāṁgavedibhiḥ
"The direct service of him, performed with love — that becomes truly of the nature of a Bhagavata; that is declared, by the wise knowers of the Vedas and Vedangas, to be liberation."
Verse 11 (padma.5.82.11)
आश्रित्य स्वगुरोः पादौ निजवृत्तं निवेदयेत् । स संदेहानपाकृत्य बोधयित्वा पुनः पुनः
āśritya svaguroḥ pādau nijavṛttaṁ nivedayet sa saṁdehānapākṛtya bodhayitvā punaḥ punaḥ
"Having taken refuge at his own guru's feet, the disciple should declare his own conduct. Having removed his doubts, having instructed him again and again,"
Verse 12 (padma.5.82.12)
स्वपादप्रणतं शांतं शुश्रूषुं निजपादयोः । अतिहृष्टमनाः शिष्यं मनुमध्यापयेत्परम्
svapādapraṇataṁ śāṁtaṁ śuśrūṣuṁ nijapādayoḥ atihṛṣṭamanāḥ śiṣyaṁ manumadhyāpayetparam
the guru, exceedingly joyful in mind, should teach the supreme mantra to a disciple who is bowed at his feet, peaceful, desirous of serving at his own feet.
Verse 13 (padma.5.82.13)
चंदनेन मृदा वापि विलिखेद्बाहुमूलयोः । वामदक्षिणयोर्विप्र शंखचक्रे यथाक्रमम्
caṁdanena mṛdā vāpi vilikhedbāhumūlayoḥ vāmadakṣiṇayorvipra śaṁkhacakre yathākramam
"With sandal-paste or with clay, he should draw, upon the base of the two arms, left and right, O brahmin, the conch and the discus, in due order."
Verse 14 (padma.5.82.14)
ऊर्द्ध्वपुंड्रं ततः कुर्याद्भालादिषु विधानतः । ततोमंत्रद्वयं तस्य दक्षकर्णे विनिर्दिशेत्
ūrddhvapuṁḍraṁ tataḥ kuryādbhālādiṣu vidhānataḥ tatomaṁtradvayaṁ tasya dakṣakarṇe vinirdiśet
"Then he should apply the urdhva-pundra upon the forehead and elsewhere, according to rule; then he should impart the pair of mantras into his right ear."
Verse 15 (padma.5.82.15)
मंत्रार्थं च वदेत्तस्मै यथावदनुपूर्वशः । दासशब्दयुतं नाम धार्यं तस्य प्रयत्नतः
maṁtrārthaṁ ca vadettasmai yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ dāsaśabdayutaṁ nāma dhāryaṁ tasya prayatnataḥ
"And he should tell him the mantra's meaning, in proper sequence; the disciple should, with effort, bear a name joined with the word 'dasa'."
Verse 16 (padma.5.82.16)
ततोऽतिभक्त्या सस्नेहं वैष्णवान्भोजयेद्बुधः । श्रीगुरुं पूजयेच्चापि वस्त्रालंकरणादिभिः
tato'tibhaktyā sasnehaṁ vaiṣṇavānbhojayedbudhaḥ śrīguruṁ pūjayeccāpi vastrālaṁkaraṇādibhiḥ
"Then the wise disciple should feed Vaishnavas with great devotion and affection; he should also worship the glorious guru with garments, ornaments, and the like."
Verse 17 (padma.5.82.17)
सर्वस्वं गुरवे दद्यात्तदर्द्धं वा महामुने । स्वदेहमपि निक्षिप्य गुरौ स्थेयमकिंचनैः
sarvasvaṁ gurave dadyāttadarddhaṁ vā mahāmune svadehamapi nikṣipya gurau stheyamakiṁcanaiḥ
"He should give everything, or at least half of it, to the guru, O great sage; even having offered his own body, one who possesses nothing should remain devoted to the guru."
Verse 18 (padma.5.82.18)
य एतैः पंचभिर्विद्वान्संस्कारैः संस्कृतो भवेत् । दास्यभागी स कृष्णस्य नान्यथा कल्पकोटिभिः
ya etaiḥ paṁcabhirvidvānsaṁskāraiḥ saṁskṛto bhavet dāsyabhāgī sa kṛṣṇasya nānyathā kalpakoṭibhiḥ
"That wise one who has been consecrated with these five sacraments becomes a sharer in Krishna's service — not otherwise, even after a myriad kalpas."
Verse 19 (padma.5.82.19)
अंकनं चोर्द्ध्वपुंड्रश्च मंत्रो नामविधारणम् । पंचमो याग इत्युक्ताः संस्काराः पूर्वसूरिभिः
aṁkanaṁ corddhvapuṁḍraśca maṁtro nāmavidhāraṇam paṁcamo yāga ityuktāḥ saṁskārāḥ pūrvasūribhiḥ
"Marking, the urdhva-pundra, the mantra, the bestowal of a name, and the fifth, called worship — these are the sacraments declared by the ancient sages."
Verse 20 (padma.5.82.20)
अंकनं शंखचक्राद्यैः सच्छिद्रं पुंड्रमुच्यते । दासशब्दयुतं नाममंत्रो युगलसंज्ञकः
aṁkanaṁ śaṁkhacakrādyaiḥ sacchidraṁ puṁḍramucyate dāsaśabdayutaṁ nāmamaṁtro yugalasaṁjñakaḥ
"Marking with the conch, discus and the like; the pundra, said to have a gap, is thus named; the name joined with the word 'servant'; the mantra, called the 'pair' —"
Verse 21 (padma.5.82.21)
गुरुवैष्णवयोः पूजा याग इत्यभिधीयते । एते परमसंस्कारा मया ते परिकीर्तिताः
guruvaiṣṇavayoḥ pūjā yāga ityabhidhīyate ete paramasaṁskārā mayā te parikīrtitāḥ
"the worship of the guru and the Vaishnavas is called the yaga. These are the supreme sacraments that I have declared to you."
Verse 22 (padma.5.82.22)
अथ तुभ्यं प्रपन्नानां धर्मान्वक्ष्यामि नारद । यानास्थाय गमिष्यंति हरिधाम नराः कलौ
atha tubhyaṁ prapannānāṁ dharmānvakṣyāmi nārada yānāsthāya gamiṣyaṁti haridhāma narāḥ kalau
"Now I shall tell you, Narada, the duties of those who have taken refuge — by resorting to which men shall go to Hari's abode in the Kali age."
Verse 23 (padma.5.82.23)
इत्थं गुरोर्लब्धमंत्रो गुरुभक्तिपरायणः । सेवमानो गुरुं नित्यं तत्कृपां भावयेत्सुधीः
itthaṁ gurorlabdhamaṁtro gurubhaktiparāyaṇaḥ sevamāno guruṁ nityaṁ tatkṛpāṁ bhāvayetsudhīḥ
"Thus, having obtained the mantra from the guru, devoted to the guru, ever serving the guru, the wise one should contemplate his grace."
Verse 24 (padma.5.82.24)
सतां धर्मां स्ततः शिक्षेत्प्रपन्नानां विशेषतः । स्वेष्टदेवधिया नित्यं वैष्णवान्परितोषयेत्
satāṁ dharmāṁ stataḥ śikṣetprapannānāṁ viśeṣataḥ sveṣṭadevadhiyā nityaṁ vaiṣṇavānparitoṣayet
"He should then learn the conduct of the righteous, especially of those who have taken refuge; regarding them with the thought of his own chosen deity, he should ever satisfy the Vaishnavas."
Verse 25 (padma.5.82.25)
ताडनं भर्त्सनं कामिभोग्यत्वेन यथा स्त्रियः । गृह्णंति वैष्णवानां च तत्तद्ग्राह्यं तथा बुधैः
tāḍanaṁ bhartsanaṁ kāmibhogyatvena yathā striyaḥ gṛhṇaṁti vaiṣṇavānāṁ ca tattadgrāhyaṁ tathā budhaiḥ
"Just as a woman accepts beating and scolding from her lover as a form of enjoyment, so should whatever comes from Vaishnavas be accepted likewise by the wise."
Verse 26 (padma.5.82.26)
ऐहिक्यामुष्मिकी चिंता नैव कार्या कदाचन । ऐहिकं तु सदा भाव्यं पूर्वाचरितकर्मणा
aihikyāmuṣmikī ciṁtā naiva kāryā kadācana aihikaṁ tu sadā bhāvyaṁ pūrvācaritakarmaṇā
"One should never be anxious about matters of this world or the next. What pertains to this world is to be understood as always determined by one's own past deeds;"
Verse 27 (padma.5.82.27)
आमुष्मिकं तथा कृष्णः स्वयमेव करिष्यति । अतो हि तत्कृते त्याज्यः प्रयत्नः सर्वथा नरैः
āmuṣmikaṁ tathā kṛṣṇaḥ svayameva kariṣyati ato hi tatkṛte tyājyaḥ prayatnaḥ sarvathā naraiḥ
"and what pertains to the next world, Krishna himself will bring about. Therefore, effort on account of that should be entirely abandoned by men."
Verse 28 (padma.5.82.28)
सर्वोपायपरित्यागः कृष्णीयात्मतयार्चनम् । सुचिरं प्रोषिते कांते यथा पतिपरायणा
sarvopāyaparityāgaḥ kṛṣṇīyātmatayārcanam suciraṁ proṣite kāṁte yathā patiparāyaṇā
"The relinquishing of all other means, and worship in the state of belonging to Krishna alone — as a wife devoted to her husband, when he is long away,"
Verse 29 (padma.5.82.29)
प्रियानुरागिणी दीना तस्यसंगैककांक्षिणी । तद्गुणान्भावयेन्नित्यं गायत्यपि शृणोति च
priyānurāgiṇī dīnā tasyasaṁgaikakāṁkṣiṇī tadguṇānbhāvayennityaṁ gāyatyapi śṛṇoti ca
"loving and yearning, distressed, longing solely for union with him — should ever contemplate his virtues, sing of him, and hear of him;"
Verse 30 (padma.5.82.30)
श्रीकृष्णगुणलीलादि स्मरणादि तथाचरेत् । न पुनः साधनत्वेन कार्यं तत्तु कदाचन
śrīkṛṣṇaguṇalīlādi smaraṇādi tathācaret na punaḥ sādhanatvena kāryaṁ tattu kadācana
"so too should one remember and act with regard to Shri Krishna's virtues and sport, and the like — but this should never again be done merely as a means to some other end."
Verse 31 (padma.5.82.31)
चिरं प्रोष्यागतं कांतं प्राप्य कांतधिया यथा । चुंबंती वा श्लिष्यंतीव नेत्रांते न पिबंत्यपि
ciraṁ proṣyāgataṁ kāṁtaṁ prāpya kāṁtadhiyā yathā cuṁbaṁtī vā śliṣyaṁtīva netrāṁte na pibaṁtyapi
"As a wife, having obtained her beloved returned after long absence, thinking only of her beloved, kisses him or embraces him, and does not even blink her eyes,"
Verse 32 (padma.5.82.32)
ब्रह्मानंदगतेवाशु सेवते परया मुदा । श्रीमदर्चावतारेण तथा परिचरेद्धरिम्
brahmānaṁdagatevāśu sevate parayā mudā śrīmadarcāvatāreṇa tathā paricareddharim
"serving him with supreme joy as if she had suddenly reached the bliss of Brahman — so too should one attend upon Hari, in his glorious form as the worshipped image."
Verse 33 (padma.5.82.33)
अनन्यशरणो नित्यं तथैवानन्यसाधनः । अनन्यसाधनार्थत्वात्स्यादनन्य प्रयोजनः
ananyaśaraṇo nityaṁ tathaivānanyasādhanaḥ ananyasādhanārthatvātsyādananya prayojanaḥ
"Ever having no other refuge, and likewise no other means; and, because his means has no other purpose, he shall have no other purpose."
Verse 34 (padma.5.82.34)
नान्यं च पूजयेद्देवं न नमेत्तं स्मरेन्न च । न च पश्येन्न गायेच्च न च निंदेत्कदाचन
nānyaṁ ca pūjayeddevaṁ na namettaṁ smarenna ca na ca paśyenna gāyecca na ca niṁdetkadācana
"One should not worship any other god, nor bow to him, nor remember him; nor should one look upon him, nor sing of him, nor ever revile him."
Verse 35 (padma.5.82.35)
नान्योच्छिष्टं च भुंजीत नान्यशेषं च धारयेत् । अवैष्णवानां संभाषा वंदनादि विवर्जयेत्
nānyocchiṣṭaṁ ca bhuṁjīta nānyaśeṣaṁ ca dhārayet avaiṣṇavānāṁ saṁbhāṣā vaṁdanādi vivarjayet
"One should not eat another's leftovers, nor keep another's remnants; one should avoid conversation and salutation with non-Vaishnavas."
Verse 36 (padma.5.82.36)
ईशवैष्णवयोर्निंदां शृणुयान्न कदाचन । कर्णौ पिधाय गंतव्यं शक्तौ दंडं समाचरेत्
īśavaiṣṇavayorniṁdāṁ śṛṇuyānna kadācana karṇau pidhāya gaṁtavyaṁ śaktau daṁḍaṁ samācaret
"One should never listen to the criticism of the Lord or of Vaishnavas; one should leave, covering one's ears; if capable, one should administer punishment."
Verse 37 (padma.5.82.37)
आश्रित्य चातकीं वृत्तिं देहपातावधि द्विज । द्वयस्यार्थं भावयित्वा स्थेयमित्येव मे मतिः
āśritya cātakīṁ vṛttiṁ dehapātāvadhi dvija dvayasyārthaṁ bhāvayitvā stheyamityeva me matiḥ
"Resorting to the manner of the chataka bird, O twice-born, one should remain devoted until the falling of the body; having contemplated the meaning of the pair mantra, one should remain thus — this is my own view."
Verse 38 (padma.5.82.38)
सरः समुद्र नद्यादीन्विहाय चातको यथा । तृषितो म्रियते वापि याचते वा पयोधरम्
saraḥ samudra nadyādīnvihāya cātako yathā tṛṣito mriyate vāpi yācate vā payodharam
"Just as the chataka bird, forsaking lakes, oceans, rivers and the like, either dies of thirst or begs only from the rain-cloud,"
Verse 39 (padma.5.82.39)
एवमेव प्रयत्नेन साधनानि विचिंतयेत् । स्वेष्टदेवःसदायाच्योगतिस्त्वंमेभवेरिति
evameva prayatnena sādhanāni viciṁtayet sveṣṭadevaḥsadāyācyogatistvaṁmebhaveriti
"so too, with effort, one should contemplate the means: 'My chosen deity is ever to be entreated — you are my very refuge and goal,'"
Verse 40 (padma.5.82.40)
स्वेष्टदेव तदीयानां गुरोरपि विशेषतः । आनुकूल्ये सदा स्थेयं प्रातिकूल्यं विवर्जयेत्
sveṣṭadeva tadīyānāṁ gurorapi viśeṣataḥ ānukūlye sadā stheyaṁ prātikūlyaṁ vivarjayet
"and one should ever remain favorably disposed toward one's own chosen deity, and toward those belonging to him, and especially toward the guru; one should always avoid opposition to them."
Verse 41 (padma.5.82.41)
सकृत्प्रपन्नो वक्ष्यामि कल्याणगुणतां तयोः । विचिंत्य विश्वसेदेतौ मामिमावुद्धरिष्यतः
sakṛtprapanno vakṣyāmi kalyāṇaguṇatāṁ tayoḥ viciṁtya viśvasedetau māmimāvuddhariṣyataḥ
"I shall now tell of the auspicious quality of those two, for one who has taken refuge even once: having reflected, one should trust: 'These two shall deliver me.'"
Verse 42 (padma.5.82.42)
संसारसागरान्नाथ मित्र पुत्र गृहा कुलात् । गोप्तारौ मे युवामेव प्रपन्नभयभंजनौ
saṁsārasāgarānnātha mitra putra gṛhā kulāt goptārau me yuvāmeva prapannabhayabhaṁjanau
"'From the ocean of worldly existence, O Lord — from friend, son, house, and family — you two alone are my protectors, the destroyers of the fear of one who has taken refuge.'"
Verse 43 (padma.5.82.43)
योहं ममास्ति यत्किंचिदिह लोके परत्र च । तत्सर्वं भवतोरद्य चरणेषु समर्चितम्
yohaṁ mamāsti yatkiṁcidiha loke paratra ca tatsarvaṁ bhavatoradya caraṇeṣu samarcitam
"'Whatever I am, and whatever little I possess, in this world and the next — all of it is today offered at your feet.'"
Verse 44 (padma.5.82.44)
अहमस्म्यपराधानामालयस्त्यक्त साधनः । अगतिश्च ततो नाथौ भवंतावेव मे गतिः
ahamasmyaparādhānāmālayastyakta sādhanaḥ agatiśca tato nāthau bhavaṁtāveva me gatiḥ
"'I am the very abode of offenses, my means abandoned; I have no other resort — therefore, O Lords, you two alone are my resort.'"
Verse 45 (padma.5.82.45)
तवास्मि राधिकाकांत कर्मणा मनसा गिरा । कृष्णकांते तवैवास्मि युवामेव गतिर्मम
tavāsmi rādhikākāṁta karmaṇā manasā girā kṛṣṇakāṁte tavaivāsmi yuvāmeva gatirmama
"'O beloved of Radhika, I am yours in deed, mind, and word. O beloved of Krishna, I am yours alone; you two alone are my resort.'"
Verse 46 (padma.5.82.46)
शरणं वां प्रपन्नोऽस्मि करुणानिकराकरौ । प्रसादं कुरु तं दास्यं मयि दुष्टेऽपराधिनि
śaraṇaṁ vāṁ prapanno'smi karuṇānikarākarau prasādaṁ kuru taṁ dāsyaṁ mayi duṣṭe'parādhini
"'I have taken refuge in you two, treasuries of abundant compassion. Show grace, granting service unto me, wicked offender that I am.'"
Verse 47 (padma.5.82.47)
इत्येवं जपता नित्यं स्थातव्यं पद्यपंचकम् । अचिरादेव तद्दास्यमिच्छता मुनिसत्तम
ityevaṁ japatā nityaṁ sthātavyaṁ padyapaṁcakam acirādeva taddāsyamicchatā munisattama
"Thus, reciting daily, one desiring that service should remain established, O best of sages, in these five verses, and it shall not be long in coming."
Verse 48 (padma.5.82.48)
बाह्यधर्मा मया ह्येते संक्षेपेणोपवर्णिताः । आंतरः परमो धर्मः प्रपन्नानामथोच्यते
bāhyadharmā mayā hyete saṁkṣepeṇopavarṇitāḥ āṁtaraḥ paramo dharmaḥ prapannānāmathocyate
"These are the external duties that I have briefly described to you. Now the supreme internal duty of those who have taken refuge is told:"
Verse 49 (padma.5.82.49)
कृष्णप्रिया सखीभावं समाश्रित्य प्रयत्नतः । तयोः सेवां प्रकुर्वीत दिवानक्तमतंद्रितः
kṛṣṇapriyā sakhībhāvaṁ samāśritya prayatnataḥ tayoḥ sevāṁ prakurvīta divānaktamataṁdritaḥ
"Having, with effort, taken refuge in the state of being a companion of Krishna's beloved, one should perform service to the two of them, day and night, tirelessly."
Verse 50 (padma.5.82.50)
उक्तो मंत्रस्तदंगानि तथा तस्याधिकारिणः । तद्धर्माश्च तथा तेभ्यः फलं मंत्रस्य नारद
ukto maṁtrastadaṁgāni tathā tasyādhikāriṇaḥ taddharmāśca tathā tebhyaḥ phalaṁ maṁtrasya nārada
"The mantra has been told, and its limbs, and likewise those eligible for it; and their duties, and the fruit of the mantra, O Narada."
Verse 51 (padma.5.82.51)
अनुतिष्ठ त्वमप्येतत्तयोर्दास्यमवाप्स्यसि । स्वाधिकारक्षये विप्र संदेहो नात्र कश्चन
anutiṣṭha tvamapyetattayordāsyamavāpsyasi svādhikārakṣaye vipra saṁdeho nātra kaścana
"You too should practice this; you shall attain their service. When your own qualification is exhausted, O brahmin, there is no doubt in this matter at all."
Verse 52 (padma.5.82.52)
सकृन्मात्रप्रपन्नाय तवास्मीति च याचते । निजदास्यं हरिर्दद्यान्न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा
sakṛnmātraprapannāya tavāsmīti ca yācate nijadāsyaṁ harirdadyānna me'trāsti vicāraṇā
"Even for one who has taken refuge but once, saying merely, 'I am yours,' and beseeching thus — Hari grants his own service; on this point there is no deliberation for me."
Verse 53 (padma.5.82.53)
अत्र ते वर्णयिष्यामि रहस्यं परमाद्भुतम् । श्रुतपूर्वं मया कृष्णात्साक्षाद्भगवतः परम्
atra te varṇayiṣyāmi rahasyaṁ paramādbhutam śrutapūrvaṁ mayā kṛṣṇātsākṣādbhagavataḥ param
"Here I shall describe to you a supremely wondrous secret, heard by me before, directly from Krishna, the Supreme Lord himself."
Verse 54 (padma.5.82.54)
एष ते कथितो धर्म आंतरो मुनिसत्तम । गुह्यादेष गुह्यतमो गोपनीयः प्रयत्नतः
eṣa te kathito dharma āṁtaro munisattama guhyādeṣa guhyatamo gopanīyaḥ prayatnataḥ
"This internal duty has now been told to you, O best of sages; more secret than the secret, it should be most carefully guarded."
Verse 55 (padma.5.82.55)
मंत्ररत्नमहं पूर्वं जपन्कैलासमूर्द्धनि । ध्यायन्नारायणं देवमवसं गहने वने
maṁtraratnamahaṁ pūrvaṁ japankailāsamūrddhani dhyāyannārāyaṇaṁ devamavasaṁ gahane vane
"Formerly, reciting the jewel of mantras upon the summit of Kailasa, meditating upon the god Narayana, I dwelt in a deep forest."
Verse 56 (padma.5.82.56)
ततस्तु भगवांस्तुष्टः प्रादुरास ममाग्रतः । व्रियतां वर इत्युक्ते मयाप्युद्घाट्य लोचने
tatastu bhagavāṁstuṣṭaḥ prādurāsa mamāgrataḥ vriyatāṁ vara ityukte mayāpyudghāṭya locane
"Then the Lord, pleased, appeared before me. When he said, 'Choose a boon,' I too opened my eyes,"
Verse 57 (padma.5.82.57)
दृष्टो देवःप्रिया सार्द्धं संस्थितो गरुडोपरि । प्रणिपत्यावोचमहं वरदं कमलापतिम्
dṛṣṭo devaḥpriyā sārddhaṁ saṁsthito garuḍopari praṇipatyāvocamahaṁ varadaṁ kamalāpatim
"and beheld the god, together with his beloved, seated upon Garuda. Bowing down, I said to the boon-granting Lord of Kamala."
Verse 58 (padma.5.82.58)
यद्रूपं ते कृपासिंधो परमानंददायकम् । सर्वानंदाश्रयं नित्यं मूर्तिमत्सर्वतोऽधिकम्
yadrūpaṁ te kṛpāsiṁdho paramānaṁdadāyakam sarvānaṁdāśrayaṁ nityaṁ mūrtimatsarvato'dhikam
"'That form of yours, O ocean of compassion, the bestower of supreme bliss, the refuge of all bliss, eternal, embodied above all else,'"
Verse 59 (padma.5.82.59)
निर्गुणं निष्क्रियं शांतं यद्ब्रह्मेति विदुर्बुधाः । तदहं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि चक्षुर्भ्यां परमेश्वर
nirguṇaṁ niṣkriyaṁ śāṁtaṁ yadbrahmeti vidurbudhāḥ tadahaṁ draṣṭumicchāmi cakṣurbhyāṁ parameśvara
"'without qualities, without action, tranquil, which the wise know as Brahman — that I wish to see with my own eyes, O supreme Lord.'"
Verse 60 (padma.5.82.60)
ततो मामाह भगवान्प्रपन्नं कमलापतिः । तदद्य द्रक्ष्यसे रूपं यत्ते मनसि कांक्षितम्
tato māmāha bhagavānprapannaṁ kamalāpatiḥ tadadya drakṣyase rūpaṁ yatte manasi kāṁkṣitam
"Then the Lord of Kamala spoke to me, who had thus taken refuge: 'Today you shall see that form which is desired in your mind.'"
Verse 61 (padma.5.82.61)
यमुना पश्चिमे तीरे गच्छ वृंदावनं मम । इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे देवः प्रियासार्द्धं जगत्पतिः
yamunā paścime tīre gaccha vṛṁdāvanaṁ mama ityuktvāṁtardadhe devaḥ priyāsārddhaṁ jagatpatiḥ
"'Go to my Vrindavana, on the western bank of the Yamuna.' Having said this, the Lord, the master of the universe, vanished together with his beloved."
Verse 62 (padma.5.82.62)
अहमप्यागतस्तर्हि यमुनायास्तटं शुभम् । तत्र कृष्णमपश्यं च सर्वदेवेश्वरेश्वरम्
ahamapyāgatastarhi yamunāyāstaṭaṁ śubham tatra kṛṣṇamapaśyaṁ ca sarvadeveśvareśvaram
"I too then came to the auspicious bank of the Yamuna. There I beheld Krishna, the lord of the lords of all the gods,"
Verse 63 (padma.5.82.63)
गोपवेषधरं कांतं किशोरवयसान्वितम् । प्रियास्कंधे सुविन्यस्त वामहस्तं मनोहरम्
gopaveṣadharaṁ kāṁtaṁ kiśoravayasānvitam priyāskaṁdhe suvinyasta vāmahastaṁ manoharam
"wearing a cowherd's guise, beloved, in the age of youth, his left hand gracefully resting on his beloved's shoulder, enchanting,"
Verse 64 (padma.5.82.64)
हसंतं हासयतं तां मध्ये गोपीकदंबके । स्निग्धमेघसमाभासं कल्याणगुणमंदिरम्
hasaṁtaṁ hāsayataṁ tāṁ madhye gopīkadaṁbake snigdhameghasamābhāsaṁ kalyāṇaguṇamaṁdiram
"laughing, making her laugh, in the midst of a throng of gopis, of a hue like a fresh, glossy rain-cloud, the very abode of auspicious qualities."
Verse 65 (padma.5.82.65)
प्रहस्य च ततः कृष्णो मामाहामृतभाषणः । अहं ते दर्शनं यातो ज्ञात्वा रुद्र तवेप्सितम्
prahasya ca tataḥ kṛṣṇo māmāhāmṛtabhāṣaṇaḥ ahaṁ te darśanaṁ yāto jñātvā rudra tavepsitam
"Then, smiling, Krishna, of nectar-sweet speech, spoke to me: 'I have come here for your sight, knowing your desire, O Rudra.'"
Verse 66 (padma.5.82.66)
यदद्य मे त्वया दृष्टमिदं रूपमलौकिकम् । घनीभूतामलप्रेम सच्चिदानंदविग्रहम्
yadadya me tvayā dṛṣṭamidaṁ rūpamalaukikam ghanībhūtāmalaprema saccidānaṁdavigraham
"'This form of mine, extraordinary, that you have now seen — dense, spotless love, the very form of being-consciousness-bliss —'"
Verse 67 (padma.5.82.67)
नीरूपं निर्गुणं व्यापि क्रियाहीनं परात्परम् । वदंत्युपनिषत्संघा इदमेव ममानघम्
nīrūpaṁ nirguṇaṁ vyāpi kriyāhīnaṁ parātparam vadaṁtyupaniṣatsaṁghā idameva mamānagham
"'formless, without qualities, all-pervading, free of action, beyond the beyond — this same form the assembly of Upanishads declares to be my own, blameless self.'"
Verse 68 (padma.5.82.68)
प्रकृत्युत्थगुणाभावादनंतत्वात्तथेश्वरम् । असिद्धत्वान्मद्गुणानां निर्गुणं मां वदंति हि
prakṛtyutthaguṇābhāvādanaṁtatvāttatheśvaram asiddhatvānmadguṇānāṁ nirguṇaṁ māṁ vadaṁti hi
"'Because of the absence of qualities arising from Prakriti, and because of my infinitude, and hence Ishvara; because my own qualities are not established as real, they call me without qualities.'"
Verse 69 (padma.5.82.69)
अदृश्यत्वान्ममैतस्य रूपस्य चर्मचक्षुषा । अरूपं मां वदंत्येते वेदाः सर्वे महेश्वर
adṛśyatvānmamaitasya rūpasya carmacakṣuṣā arūpaṁ māṁ vadaṁtyete vedāḥ sarve maheśvara
"'Because this form of mine is invisible to eyes of flesh, all the Vedas call me formless, O Maheshvara.'"
Verse 70 (padma.5.82.70)
व्यापकत्वाच्चिदंशेन ब्रह्मेति च विदुर्बुधाः । अकर्तृत्वात्प्रपंचस्य निष्क्रियं मां वदंति हि
vyāpakatvāccidaṁśena brahmeti ca vidurbudhāḥ akartṛtvātprapaṁcasya niṣkriyaṁ māṁ vadaṁti hi
"'Because of my pervasiveness through the portion of consciousness, the wise know me as Brahman; and because I am not the doer of the manifest universe, they call me without action.'"
Verse 71 (padma.5.82.71)
मायागुणैर्यतोमेंऽशा कुर्वंति सर्जनादिकम् । न करोमि स्वयं किंचित्सृष्ट्यादिकमहं शिव
māyāguṇairyatomeṁ'śā kurvaṁti sarjanādikam na karomi svayaṁ kiṁcitsṛṣṭyādikamahaṁ śiva
"'For, through the powers of maya, my own portions perform creation and the rest — I myself do nothing whatsoever regarding creation and so forth, O Shiva.'"
Verse 72 (padma.5.82.72)
अहमासां महादेव गोपीनां प्रेमविह्वलः । क्रियांतरं न जानामि नात्मानमपि नारद
ahamāsāṁ mahādeva gopīnāṁ premavihvalaḥ kriyāṁtaraṁ na jānāmi nātmānamapi nārada
"'I, O Mahadeva, am overwhelmed with love for these gopis; I know no other action, nor even my own self, O Narada.'"
Verse 73 (padma.5.82.73)
विहराम्यनया नित्यमस्याः प्रेमवशीकृतः । इमां तु मत्प्रियां विद्धि राधिकां परदेवताम्
viharāmyanayā nityamasyāḥ premavaśīkṛtaḥ imāṁ tu matpriyāṁ viddhi rādhikāṁ paradevatām
"'I ever sport with her, subdued by her love. Know her, my beloved, to be Radhika, the supreme deity.'"
Verse 74 (padma.5.82.74)
अस्याश्च परितः पश्य सख्यः शतसहस्रशः । नित्याः सर्वा इमा रुद्र यथाहं नित्यविग्रहः
asyāśca paritaḥ paśya sakhyaḥ śatasahasraśaḥ nityāḥ sarvā imā rudra yathāhaṁ nityavigrahaḥ
"'And behold, all around her, her companions, in hundreds of thousands — all of them eternal, O Rudra, just as I am of eternal form.'"
Verse 75 (padma.5.82.75)
गोपा गावो गोपिकाश्च सदा वृंदावनं मम । सर्वमेतन्नित्यमेव चिदानंदरसात्मकम्
gopā gāvo gopikāśca sadā vṛṁdāvanaṁ mama sarvametannityameva cidānaṁdarasātmakam
"'The cowherds, the cows, and the cowherd women, and Vrindavana, are eternally mine; all of this is eternal indeed, of the very essence of consciousness and bliss.'"
Verse 76 (padma.5.82.76)
इदमानंदकंदाख्यं विद्धि वृंदावनं मम । यस्मिन्प्रवेशमात्रेण न पुनः संसृतिं विशेत्
idamānaṁdakaṁdākhyaṁ viddhi vṛṁdāvanaṁ mama yasminpraveśamātreṇa na punaḥ saṁsṛtiṁ viśet
"'Know this, called the very source of bliss, to be my Vrindavana — by merely entering which, one shall never again enter the cycle of rebirth.'"
Verse 77 (padma.5.82.77)
मद्वनं प्राप्य यो मूढः पुनरन्यत्र गच्छति । स आत्महा भवेदेव सत्यं सत्यं मयोदितम्
madvanaṁ prāpya yo mūḍhaḥ punaranyatra gacchati sa ātmahā bhavedeva satyaṁ satyaṁ mayoditam
"'Whatever fool, having reached my forest, goes elsewhere again, becomes indeed a self-slayer — this I have declared as truth, truth indeed.'"
Verse 78 (padma.5.82.78)
वृंदावनं परित्यज्य नैव गच्छाम्यहं क्वचित् । निवसाम्यनया सार्द्धमहमत्रैव सर्वदा
vṛṁdāvanaṁ parityajya naiva gacchāmyahaṁ kvacit nivasāmyanayā sārddhamahamatraiva sarvadā
"'Never, having abandoned Vrindavana, do I go anywhere at all; I dwell here always, together with her.'"
Verse 79 (padma.5.82.79)
इत्येवं सर्वमाख्यातं यत्ते रुद्र हृदि स्थितम् । कथयस्व ममेदानीं किमन्यच्छ्रोतुमिच्छसि
ityevaṁ sarvamākhyātaṁ yatte rudra hṛdi sthitam kathayasva mamedānīṁ kimanyacchrotumicchasi
"'Thus everything that was in your heart, O Rudra, has now been told to you; tell me now what else you wish to hear.'"
Verse 80 (padma.5.82.80)
ततस्तमब्रवं देवमहं च मुनिसत्तम । ईदृशस्त्वं कथं लभ्यस्तमुपायं वदस्व मे
tatastamabravaṁ devamahaṁ ca munisattama īdṛśastvaṁ kathaṁ labhyastamupāyaṁ vadasva me
Then, O best of sages, I said to that god: "'How is such a one as you to be attained? Tell me that means.'"
Verse 81 (padma.5.82.81)
ततो मामाह भगवान्साधु रुद्र तवोदितम् । अतिगुह्यतमं ह्येतद्गोपनीयं प्रयत्नतः
tato māmāha bhagavānsādhu rudra tavoditam atiguhyatamaṁ hyetadgopanīyaṁ prayatnataḥ
Then the Lord said to me: "'Well have you spoken, O Rudra; this is exceedingly secret and should be carefully guarded.'"
Verse 82 (padma.5.82.82)
सकृदावां प्रपन्नो यस्त्यक्तोपाय उपासते । गोपीभावेन देवेश स मामेति न चेतरः
sakṛdāvāṁ prapanno yastyaktopāya upāsate gopībhāvena deveśa sa māmeti na cetaraḥ
"'Whoever, having taken refuge in us but once, worships, having abandoned all other means, in the state of a gopi's feeling, O lord of gods — he attains me, and no other does.'"
Verse 83 (padma.5.82.83)
सकृदावां प्रपन्नो वा मत्प्रियामेकिकामुत । सेवतेनन्यभावेन स मामेति न संशयः
sakṛdāvāṁ prapanno vā matpriyāmekikāmuta sevatenanyabhāvena sa māmeti na saṁśayaḥ
"'Or whoever, having taken refuge in us but once, serves my beloved alone, with unwavering devotion — he attains me, without doubt.'"
Verse 84 (padma.5.82.84)
यो मामेव प्रपन्नश्च मत्प्रियां न महेश्वर । न कदापि स चाप्नोति मामेवं ते मयोदितम्
yo māmeva prapannaśca matpriyāṁ na maheśvara na kadāpi sa cāpnoti māmevaṁ te mayoditam
"'But whoever has taken refuge in me alone, and not in my beloved, O Maheshvara — he never attains me at all; thus have I declared it to you.'"
Verse 85 (padma.5.82.85)
सकृदेव प्रपन्नोयस्तवास्मीति वदेदपि । साधनेन विनाप्येव मामाप्नोति न संशयः
sakṛdeva prapannoyastavāsmīti vadedapi sādhanena vināpyeva māmāpnoti na saṁśayaḥ
"'Whoever, having taken refuge even once, says merely, 'I am yours' — even without further means, he attains me, without doubt.'"
Verse 86 (padma.5.82.86)
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन मत्प्रियां शरणं व्रजेत् । आश्रित्य मत्प्रियां रुद्र मां वशीकर्त्तुमर्हसि
tasmātsarvaprayatnena matpriyāṁ śaraṇaṁ vrajet āśritya matpriyāṁ rudra māṁ vaśīkarttumarhasi
"'Therefore, with every effort, one should go for refuge to my beloved; having taken refuge in my beloved, O Rudra, you shall be able to subdue me.'"
Verse 87 (padma.5.82.87)
इदं रहस्यं परमं मया ते परिकीर्तितम् । त्वयाप्येतन्महादेव गोपनीयं प्रयत्नतः
idaṁ rahasyaṁ paramaṁ mayā te parikīrtitam tvayāpyetanmahādeva gopanīyaṁ prayatnataḥ
"'This supreme secret I have declared to you; this too, O Mahadeva, should be carefully guarded by you.'"
Verse 88 (padma.5.82.88)
त्वमप्येनां समाश्रित्य राधिकां मम वल्लभाम् । जपन्मे युगलं मंत्रं सदा तिष्ठ मदालये
tvamapyenāṁ samāśritya rādhikāṁ mama vallabhām japanme yugalaṁ maṁtraṁ sadā tiṣṭha madālaye
"'You too, having taken refuge in her, Radhika, my beloved, reciting my pair-mantra, should ever remain in my very abode.'"
Verse 89 (padma.5.82.89)
शिव उवाच-। इत्युक्त्वा दक्षिणे कर्णे मम कृष्णो दयानिधिः । उपदिश्य परं मंत्रं संस्कारांश्च विधाय हि
śiva uvāca- ityuktvā dakṣiṇe karṇe mama kṛṣṇo dayānidhiḥ upadiśya paraṁ maṁtraṁ saṁskārāṁśca vidhāya hi
Shiva said: "Having said this into my right ear, Krishna, that treasury of compassion, having imparted the supreme mantra and performed the sacraments,"
Verse 90 (padma.5.82.90)
सगणोंऽतर्दधे विप्र तत्रैव मम पश्यतः । अहमप्यत्र तिष्ठामि तदारभ्य निरंतरम्
sagaṇoṁ'tardadhe vipra tatraiva mama paśyataḥ ahamapyatra tiṣṭhāmi tadārabhya niraṁtaram
"vanished, together with his retinue, right there, before my very eyes, O brahmin. I too have remained there ever since, without interruption."
Verse 91 (padma.5.82.91)
सर्वमेतन्मया तुभ्यं सांगमेव प्रकीर्त्तितम् । अधुना वद विप्रेंद्र किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि
sarvametanmayā tubhyaṁ sāṁgameva prakīrttitam adhunā vada vipreṁdra kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi
"All of this, together with its limbs, has now been declared to you. Now tell me, O foremost brahmin, what further do you wish to hear?"
