Hari's Eightfold Daily Pastime

Verse 1 (padma.5.83.1)

नारद उवाच- भगवन्सर्वमाख्यातं यद्यत्पृष्टं मया गुरो । अधुना श्रोतुमिच्छामि भावमार्गमनुत्तमम्

nārada uvāca- bhagavansarvamākhyātaṁ yadyatpṛṣṭaṁ mayā guro adhunā śrotumicchāmi bhāvamārgamanuttamam

Narada said: "O Lord, everything that I asked has been told, O guru; now I wish to hear the unsurpassed path of feeling."

Verse 2 (padma.5.83.2)

शिव उवाच- साधु विप्र त्वया पृष्टं सर्वलोकहितैषिणा । रहस्यमपि वक्ष्यामि तन्मे निगदतः शृणु

śiva uvāca- sādhu vipra tvayā pṛṣṭaṁ sarvalokahitaiṣiṇā rahasyamapi vakṣyāmi tanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu

Shiva said: "Well have you asked, O brahmin, seeker of the welfare of all worlds; I shall tell you this secret too — listen as I recount it."

Verse 3 (padma.5.83.3)

दास्यः सखायः पितरौ प्रेयस्यश्च हरेरिह । सर्वे नित्या मुनिश्रेष्ठ वसंति गुणशालिनः

dāsyaḥ sakhāyaḥ pitarau preyasyaśca hareriha sarve nityā muniśreṣṭha vasaṁti guṇaśālinaḥ

"The maidservants, the companions, the two parents, and the beloveds of Hari here — all of them, O foremost sage, dwell eternally, endowed with their respective virtues."

Verse 4 (padma.5.83.4)

यथा प्रकटलीलायां पुराणेषु प्रकीर्तिताः । तथा ते नित्यलीलायां संति वृंदावने भुवि

yathā prakaṭalīlāyāṁ purāṇeṣu prakīrtitāḥ tathā te nityalīlāyāṁ saṁti vṛṁdāvane bhuvi

"Just as they are celebrated in the Puranas in his manifest pastime, so too they exist in his eternal pastime, in Vrindavana on earth."

Verse 5 (padma.5.83.5)

गमनागमने नित्यं करोति वनगोष्ठयोः । गोचारणं वयस्यैश्च विनाऽसुरविघातनम्

gamanāgamane nityaṁ karoti vanagoṣṭhayoḥ gocāraṇaṁ vayasyaiśca vinā'suravighātanam

"He goes and comes eternally, between the forest and the cow-pen, grazing the cows with his companions, without the slaying of demons."

Verse 6 (padma.5.83.6)

करकीयाभिमानिन्यस्तथा तस्य प्रिया जनाः । प्रच्छन्नेनैव भावेन रमयंति निजप्रियम्

karakīyābhimāninyastathā tasya priyā janāḥ pracchannenaiva bhāvena ramayaṁti nijapriyam

"Those who consider themselves his very own beloved women delight their own beloved in a hidden manner."

Verse 7 (padma.5.83.7)

आत्मानं चिंतयेत्तत्र तासां मध्ये मनोरमाम् । रूपयौवनसंपन्नां किशोरीं प्रमदाकृतिम्

ātmānaṁ ciṁtayettatra tāsāṁ madhye manoramām rūpayauvanasaṁpannāṁ kiśorīṁ pramadākṛtim

"One should think of oneself there, in their midst, as a lovely one, endowed with beauty and youth, in the guise of a young woman,"

Verse 8 (padma.5.83.8)

नानाशिल्पकलाभिज्ञां कृष्णभोगानुरूपिणीम् । प्रार्थितामपि कृष्णेन तत्र भोगपराङ्मुखीम्

nānāśilpakalābhijñāṁ kṛṣṇabhogānurūpiṇīm prārthitāmapi kṛṣṇena tatra bhogaparāṅmukhīm

"skilled in various arts and crafts, suited to Krishna's enjoyment, though even when entreated by Krishna, averse to enjoyment for oneself,"

Verse 9 (padma.5.83.9)

राधिकानुचरीं तत्र तत्सेवनपरायणाम् । कृष्णादप्यधिकं प्रेम राधिकायां प्रकुर्वतीम्

rādhikānucarīṁ tatra tatsevanaparāyaṇām kṛṣṇādapyadhikaṁ prema rādhikāyāṁ prakurvatīm

"a handmaiden of Radhika there, devoted to her service, cultivating even greater love for Radhika than for Krishna himself,"

Verse 10 (padma.5.83.10)

प्रीत्यानुदिवसं यत्नात्तयोः संगमकारिणीम् । तत्सेवनसुखाह्लादभावेनातिसुनिर्वृताम्

prītyānudivasaṁ yatnāttayoḥ saṁgamakāriṇīm tatsevanasukhāhlādabhāvenātisunirvṛtām

"daily, with effort and affection, bringing about their union, exceedingly content in the bliss of the feeling of the joy of serving them —"

Verse 11 (padma.5.83.11)

इत्यात्मानं विचिंत्यैव तत्र सेवां समाचरेत् । ब्राह्मं मुहूर्त्तमारभ्य यावत्स्यात्तु महानिशा

ityātmānaṁ viciṁtyaiva tatra sevāṁ samācaret brāhmaṁ muhūrttamārabhya yāvatsyāttu mahāniśā

"thinking of oneself thus, one should perform this service there, from the Brahma-muhurta until the deep of night."

Verse 12 (padma.5.83.12)

नारद उवाच- हरेर्दैनंदिनीं लीलां श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः । लीलामजानता सेव्यो मनसा तु कथं हरिः

nārada uvāca- harerdainaṁdinīṁ līlāṁ śrotumicchāmi tattvataḥ līlāmajānatā sevyo manasā tu kathaṁ hariḥ

Narada said: "I wish to hear, in truth, Hari's daily pastime; how can Hari be served in the mind by one who does not know his pastime?"

Verse 13 (padma.5.83.13)

शिव उवाच- नाहं जानामि तां लीलां हरेर्नारदतत्त्वतः । वृंदादेवीमितो गच्छ सा ते लीलां प्रवक्ष्यति

śiva uvāca- nāhaṁ jānāmi tāṁ līlāṁ harernāradatattvataḥ vṛṁdādevīmito gaccha sā te līlāṁ pravakṣyati

Shiva said: "I myself do not know that pastime of Hari in truth, O Narada. Go from here to the goddess Vrinda; she shall relate to you his pastime."

Verse 14 (padma.5.83.14)

अविदूर इतः स्थानात्केशीतीर्थसमीपतः । सखीसंघवृता सास्ते गोविंदपरिचारिका

avidūra itaḥ sthānātkeśītīrthasamīpataḥ sakhīsaṁghavṛtā sāste goviṁdaparicārikā

"Not far from this place, near the Keshi-tirtha, she dwells, surrounded by her band of companions, the attendant of Govinda."

Verse 15 (padma.5.83.15)

सूत उवाच- इत्युक्तस्तं परिक्रम्य हृष्टो नत्वा पुनः पुनः । वृंदाश्रमं जगामाथ नारदो मुनिसत्तमः

sūta uvāca- ityuktastaṁ parikramya hṛṣṭo natvā punaḥ punaḥ vṛṁdāśramaṁ jagāmātha nārado munisattamaḥ

Suta said: "Thus addressed, having circumambulated him, joyful, bowing again and again, Narada, foremost of sages, then went to Vrinda's hermitage."

Verse 16 (padma.5.83.16)

वृंदापि नारदं दृष्ट्वा प्रणम्य च पुनःपुनः । उवाच च मुनिश्रेष्ठ कथमत्रागतिस्तव

vṛṁdāpi nāradaṁ dṛṣṭvā praṇamya ca punaḥpunaḥ uvāca ca muniśreṣṭha kathamatrāgatistava

"Vrinda too, seeing Narada, having bowed again and again, said: 'O foremost of sages, how have you come here?'"

Verse 17 (padma.5.83.17)

नारद उवाच- त्वत्तो वेदितुमिच्छामि नैत्यकं चरितं हरेः । तदादितो मम ब्रूहि यदि योग्योऽस्मि शोभने

nārada uvāca- tvatto veditumicchāmi naityakaṁ caritaṁ hareḥ tadādito mama brūhi yadi yogyo'smi śobhane

Narada said: "I wish to learn from you Hari's daily conduct; tell it to me from the beginning, O gracious one, if I am worthy."

Verse 18 (padma.5.83.18)

वृंदोवाच- रहस्यमपिवक्ष्यामि कृष्णभक्तोसि नारद । न प्रकाश्यं त्वयाप्येतद्गुह्याद्गुह्यतरं महत्

vṛṁdovāca- rahasyamapivakṣyāmi kṛṣṇabhaktosi nārada na prakāśyaṁ tvayāpyetadguhyādguhyataraṁ mahat

Vrinda said: "I shall tell you this secret too, O Narada, since you are a devotee of Krishna; but this too must not be revealed by you — it is more secret than secrets."

Verse 19 (padma.5.83.19)

मध्ये वृंदावने रम्ये पंचाशत्कुंजमंडिते । कल्पवृक्षनिकुंजे तु दिव्यरत्नमये गृहे

madhye vṛṁdāvane ramye paṁcāśatkuṁjamaṁḍite kalpavṛkṣanikuṁje tu divyaratnamaye gṛhe

"In the midst of delightful Vrindavana, adorned with fifty groves, in the Kalpavriksha-nikunja, in a house made of divine jewels,"

Verse 20 (padma.5.83.20)

निद्रितौ तिष्ठतस्तल्पे निबिडालिंगितौ मिथः । मदाज्ञाकारिभिः पश्चात्पक्षिभिर्बोधितावपि

nidritau tiṣṭhatastalpe nibiḍāliṁgitau mithaḥ madājñākāribhiḥ paścātpakṣibhirbodhitāvapi

"the two of them lie asleep upon a bed, tightly embracing one another, and though woken afterward by birds obeying my command,"

Verse 21 (padma.5.83.21)

गाढालिंगनजानंदमाप्तौ तद्भंगकातरौ । न मनः कुरुतस्तल्पात्समुत्थातुं मनागपि

gāḍhāliṁganajānaṁdamāptau tadbhaṁgakātarau na manaḥ kurutastalpātsamutthātuṁ manāgapi

"having attained the bliss of that tight embrace, fearful of breaking it, their minds do not incline in the least to rise from the bed."

Verse 22 (padma.5.83.22)

ततश्च सारिकासंघैः शुकाद्यैः परितो मुहुः । बोधितौ विविधैर्वाक्यैः स्वतल्पादुदतिष्ठताम्

tataśca sārikāsaṁghaiḥ śukādyaiḥ parito muhuḥ bodhitau vividhairvākyaiḥ svatalpādudatiṣṭhatām

"Then, by flocks of mynahs, parrots and the like, awakened repeatedly on every side with various words, they rise from their own bed."

Verse 23 (padma.5.83.23)

उपविष्टौ ततो दृष्ट्वा सख्यस्तल्पे मुदान्वितौ । प्रविश्य सेवां कुर्वंति तत्काले ह्युचितां तयोः

upaviṣṭau tato dṛṣṭvā sakhyastalpe mudānvitau praviśya sevāṁ kurvaṁti tatkāle hyucitāṁ tayoḥ

"Then, seeing them seated upon the bed, their companions, filled with joy, enter and perform the service proper to them at that time."

Verse 24 (padma.5.83.24)

पुनश्च सारिकावाक्यैस्तावुत्थाय स्वतल्पतः । गच्छतः स्वस्वभवनं भीत्युत्कंठाकुलौ ततः

punaśca sārikāvākyaistāvutthāya svatalpataḥ gacchataḥ svasvabhavanaṁ bhītyutkaṁṭhākulau tataḥ

"Then again, by the words of the mynahs, the two of them, having risen from their own bed, go to their respective homes, then filled with fear and longing."

Verse 25 (padma.5.83.25)

प्रातश्च बोधितो मात्रा तल्पादुत्थाय सत्वरः । कृत्वा कृष्णो दंतकाष्ठं बलदेवसमन्वितः

prātaśca bodhito mātrā talpādutthāya satvaraḥ kṛtvā kṛṣṇo daṁtakāṣṭhaṁ baladevasamanvitaḥ

"And in the morning, roused by his mother, Krishna, quickly rising from his bed, having chewed his tooth-stick, together with Baladeva,"

Verse 26 (padma.5.83.26)

मात्रानुमोदितो याति गोशालां सखिभिर्वृतः । राधापि बोधिता विप्र वयस्याभिः स्वतल्पतः

mātrānumodito yāti gośālāṁ sakhibhirvṛtaḥ rādhāpi bodhitā vipra vayasyābhiḥ svatalpataḥ

"with his mother's leave, goes to the cowshed, surrounded by his companions. Radha too, O brahmin, is woken by her friends from her own bed,"

Verse 27 (padma.5.83.27)

उत्थाय दंतकाष्ठादि कृत्वाभ्यंगं समाचरेत् । स्नानवेदीं ततो गत्वा स्नापिता सा निजालिभिः

utthāya daṁtakāṣṭhādi kṛtvābhyaṁgaṁ samācaret snānavedīṁ tato gatvā snāpitā sā nijālibhiḥ

"and, rising, having done her tooth-cleaning and the like, performs her anointing. Then, going to the bathing-platform, she is bathed by her own companions."

Verse 28 (padma.5.83.28)

भूषागृहे व्रजेत्तत्र वयस्या भूषयंत्यपि । भूषणैर्विविधैर्दिव्यैर्गंधमाल्यानुलेपनैः

bhūṣāgṛhe vrajettatra vayasyā bhūṣayaṁtyapi bhūṣaṇairvividhairdivyairgaṁdhamālyānulepanaiḥ

"She goes to the dressing chamber, where her companions adorn her with manifold divine ornaments, fragrances, garlands, and unguents."

Verse 29 (padma.5.83.29)

ततः सखीजनैस्तस्याः श्वश्रूं संप्रार्थ्य यत्नतः । कर्तुमाहूयतेस्वन्नं ससखी सा यशोदया

tataḥ sakhījanaistasyāḥ śvaśrūṁ saṁprārthya yatnataḥ kartumāhūyatesvannaṁ sasakhī sā yaśodayā

"Then, her friends, having with effort entreated her mother-in-law, invite her, together with her companion, to cook the food."

Verse 30 (padma.5.83.30)

नारद उवाच- कथमाहूयते देवि पाकार्थं तु यशोदया । सतीषु पाककर्त्रीषु रोहिणीप्रमुखास्वपि

nārada uvāca- kathamāhūyate devi pākārthaṁ tu yaśodayā satīṣu pākakartrīṣu rohiṇīpramukhāsvapi

Narada said: "How is she invited by Yashoda for the sake of cooking, O goddess, when there are chaste women who are already the cooks, headed by Rohini?"

Verse 31 (padma.5.83.31)

वृंदोवाच- पूर्वं दुर्वाससा दत्तो वरस्तस्यै महामुने । इति कात्यायनी वक्त्राच्छ्रुतमासीन्मया पुरा

vṛṁdovāca- pūrvaṁ durvāsasā datto varastasyai mahāmune iti kātyāyanī vaktrācchrutamāsīnmayā purā

Vrinda said: "Formerly, a boon was given to her by Durvasas, O great sage — thus I once heard from the mouth of Katyayani."

Verse 32 (padma.5.83.32)

त्वया यत्पच्यते देवि तदन्नं मदनुग्रहात् । मिष्टं स्यादमृतस्पर्द्धि भोक्तुरायुष्करं तथा

tvayā yatpacyate devi tadannaṁ madanugrahāt miṣṭaṁ syādamṛtasparddhi bhokturāyuṣkaraṁ tathā

"'Whatever food is cooked by you, O goddess, by my grace, shall be sweet, rivaling ambrosia, and shall grant long life to the one who eats it.'"

Verse 33 (padma.5.83.33)

इत्याह्वयति तां नित्यं यशोदा पुत्रवत्सला । आयुष्मान्मे भवेत्पुत्रः स्वादुलोभात्तथा सती

ityāhvayati tāṁ nityaṁ yaśodā putravatsalā āyuṣmānme bhavetputraḥ svādulobhāttathā satī

"Thus, ever loving her son, Yashoda invites her; that virtuous one too, out of longing for that sweetness, thinks: 'May my son have long life.'"

Verse 34 (padma.5.83.34)

श्रुत्वानुमोदिता हृष्टा सापि नंदालयं व्रजेत् । ससखीप्रकरा तत्र गत्वा पाकं करोति च

śrutvānumoditā hṛṣṭā sāpi naṁdālayaṁ vrajet sasakhīprakarā tatra gatvā pākaṁ karoti ca

"Hearing this, gladdened and consenting, she too goes to Nanda's house; going there with her band of companions, she cooks."

Verse 35 (padma.5.83.35)

कृष्णोऽपि दुग्ध्वा गाः काश्चिद्दोहयित्वा जनैः पराः । आगच्छति पितुर्वाक्यात्स्वगृहं सखिभिर्वृतः

kṛṣṇo'pi dugdhvā gāḥ kāściddohayitvā janaiḥ parāḥ āgacchati piturvākyātsvagṛhaṁ sakhibhirvṛtaḥ

"Krishna too, having milked some cows himself, having had others milked by the servants, comes to his own house at his father's word, surrounded by his companions."

Verse 36 (padma.5.83.36)

अभ्यंगमर्दनं कृत्वा दासैः संस्नापितो मुदा । धौतवस्त्रधरः स्रग्वी चंदनाक्तकलेवरः

abhyaṁgamardanaṁ kṛtvā dāsaiḥ saṁsnāpito mudā dhautavastradharaḥ sragvī caṁdanāktakalevaraḥ

"Having been anointed and massaged, joyfully bathed by servants, wearing washed garments, garlanded, his body smeared with sandal,"

Verse 37 (padma.5.83.37)

द्विफालबद्धचिकुरैर्ग्रीवा भालोपरिस्फुरन् । चंद्राकारस्फुरद्भालतिलकालकरंजितः

dviphālabaddhacikurairgrīvā bhāloparisphuran caṁdrākārasphuradbhālatilakālakaraṁjitaḥ

"his hair bound in two locks, gleaming upon his neck and above his brow, his moon-shaped, gleaming tilaka on his forehead, graced by his curling locks,"

Verse 38 (padma.5.83.38)

कंकणांगदकेयूर रत्नमुद्रा लसत्करः । मुक्ताहारस्फुरद्वक्षा मकराकृतिकुंडलः

kaṁkaṇāṁgadakeyūra ratnamudrā lasatkaraḥ muktāhārasphuradvakṣā makarākṛtikuṁḍalaḥ

"his hand gleaming with bangles, armlets, bracelets, and jeweled rings, his chest gleaming with a pearl necklace, wearing makara-shaped earrings,"

Verse 39 (padma.5.83.39)

मुहुराकारितो मात्रा प्रविशेद्भोजनालयम् । अवलंब्य करं सख्युर्बलदेवमनुव्रतः

muhurākārito mātrā praviśedbhojanālayam avalaṁbya karaṁ sakhyurbaladevamanuvrataḥ

"repeatedly called by his mother, he enters the dining hall, leaning on the arm of his friend, followed devotedly by Baladeva."

Verse 40 (padma.5.83.40)

भुंक्तेऽथ विविधान्नानि भ्रात्रा च सखिभिर्वृतः । हासयन्विविधैर्हास्यैः सखींस्तैर्हसति स्वयम्

bhuṁkte'tha vividhānnāni bhrātrā ca sakhibhirvṛtaḥ hāsayanvividhairhāsyaiḥ sakhīṁstairhasati svayam

"He then eats various foods, together with his brother and surrounded by his companions, making his friends laugh with various jests, laughing himself along with them."

Verse 41 (padma.5.83.41)

इत्थं भुक्त्वा तथाचम्य दिव्यखट्वोपरि क्षणम् । विश्रम्य सेवकैर्दत्तं तांबूलं विभजन्नदन्

itthaṁ bhuktvā tathācamya divyakhaṭvopari kṣaṇam viśramya sevakairdattaṁ tāṁbūlaṁ vibhajannadan

"Having thus eaten, and having rinsed, he rests a moment upon a divine couch; having rested, distributing and chewing the betel given by servants,"

Verse 42 (padma.5.83.42)

गोपवेषधरः कृष्णो धेनुवृंदपुरस्सरः । व्रजवासिजनैः प्रीत्या सर्वैरनुगतः पथि

gopaveṣadharaḥ kṛṣṇo dhenuvṛṁdapurassaraḥ vrajavāsijanaiḥ prītyā sarvairanugataḥ pathi

"wearing a cowherd's guise, Krishna, preceded by a herd of cows, followed on the way, with love, by all the people of Vraja,"

Verse 43 (padma.5.83.43)

पितरं मातरं नत्वा नेत्रांते नापितं गणम् । यथायोग्यं तथा चान्यान्विनिवर्त्य वनं व्रजेत्

pitaraṁ mātaraṁ natvā netrāṁte nāpitaṁ gaṇam yathāyogyaṁ tathā cānyānvinivartya vanaṁ vrajet

"having bowed to his father and mother, having glanced at others out of the corner of his eye, and having taken leave of others as fitting, goes to the forest."

Verse 44 (padma.5.83.44)

वनं प्रविश्य सखिभिः क्रीडयित्वा क्षणं ततः । विहारैर्विविधैस्तत्र वने विक्रीडते मुदा

vanaṁ praviśya sakhibhiḥ krīḍayitvā kṣaṇaṁ tataḥ vihārairvividhaistatra vane vikrīḍate mudā

"Having entered the forest, having played a moment with his companions, he then sports joyfully there in the forest with manifold pastimes."

Verse 45 (padma.5.83.45)

वंचयित्वा ततः सर्वान्द्वित्रैः प्रियसखैर्वृतः । संकेतकं व्रजेद्धर्षात्प्रियासंदर्शनोत्सुकः

vaṁcayitvā tataḥ sarvāndvitraiḥ priyasakhairvṛtaḥ saṁketakaṁ vrajeddharṣātpriyāsaṁdarśanotsukaḥ

"Then, having eluded them all, surrounded by two or three of his dearest friends, he goes with joy to the tryst-place, eager for the sight of his beloved."

Verse 46 (padma.5.83.46)

सापि कृष्णं वनं यातं दृष्ट्वा स्वं गृहमागता । सूर्यादिपूजाव्याजेन कुसुमाहृतये तथा

sāpi kṛṣṇaṁ vanaṁ yātaṁ dṛṣṭvā svaṁ gṛhamāgatā sūryādipūjāvyājena kusumāhṛtaye tathā

"She too, having seen Krishna go to the forest, returns to her own house, and, under the pretext of worshipping the sun and gathering flowers,"

Verse 47 (padma.5.83.47)

वंचयित्वा गुरून्याति प्रियसंगेच्छया वनम् । इत्थं तौ बहुयत्नेन मिलित्वा कानने ततः

vaṁcayitvā gurūnyāti priyasaṁgecchayā vanam itthaṁ tau bahuyatnena militvā kānane tataḥ

"having eluded her elders, goes to the forest, out of desire for union with her beloved. Thus, the two of them, having met in the woodland with much effort,"

Verse 48 (padma.5.83.48)

विहारैर्विविधैस्तत्र दिनं विक्रीडतो मुदा । दोलायां च समारूढौ सखिभिर्दोलितौ क्वचित्

vihārairvividhaistatra dinaṁ vikrīḍato mudā dolāyāṁ ca samārūḍhau sakhibhirdolitau kvacit

"sport there joyfully all day with manifold pastimes. Sometimes, mounted upon a swing, the two of them are swung by their companions."

Verse 49 (padma.5.83.49)

क्वापि वेणुं करस्रस्तं प्रिययापह्नुतं हरिः । अन्वेषयन्नुपालब्धो विप्रलब्धप्रियागणैः

kvāpi veṇuṁ karasrastaṁ priyayāpahnutaṁ hariḥ anveṣayannupālabdho vipralabdhapriyāgaṇaiḥ

"Sometimes Hari, when the flute slips from his hand and is stolen away by his beloved, is teased and mocked, as he searches for it, by his cheated companions,"

Verse 50 (padma.5.83.50)

हसितैर्बहुधा ताभिर्हासितस्तत्र तिष्ठति । वसंतवायुना जुष्टं वनखण्डं मुदा क्वचित्

hasitairbahudhā tābhirhāsitastatra tiṣṭhati vasaṁtavāyunā juṣṭaṁ vanakhaṇḍaṁ mudā kvacit

"amid much laughter from them; he stands there, made to laugh. Sometimes, entering, with joy, a grove-thicket favored by the spring breeze,"

Verse 51 (padma.5.83.51)

प्रविश्य चंदनांभोभिः कुंकुमादिजलैरपि । निषिंचतो यंत्रमुक्तैस्तत्पंकैर्लिंपतो मिथः

praviśya caṁdanāṁbhobhiḥ kuṁkumādijalairapi niṣiṁcato yaṁtramuktaistatpaṁkairliṁpato mithaḥ

"sprinkling one another with sandalwood-water and with saffron-tinted water and the like, shot from syringes, and smearing one another with the resulting paste,"

Verse 52 (padma.5.83.52)

सख्योऽप्येवं निषिंचंति ताश्च तौ सिंचतः पुनः । वसंतवायुजुष्टेषु वनखंडेषु सर्वतः

sakhyo'pyevaṁ niṣiṁcaṁti tāśca tau siṁcataḥ punaḥ vasaṁtavāyujuṣṭeṣu vanakhaṁḍeṣu sarvataḥ

"their companions too sprinkle likewise, and the two of them sprinkle them in turn, everywhere in the groves favored by the spring breeze."

तत्तत्कालोचितैर्नानाविहारैः सगणौ द्विज । श्रांतौ क्वचिद्वृक्षमूलमासाद्य मुनिसत्तम

tattatkālocitairnānāvihāraiḥ sagaṇau dvija śrāṁtau kvacidvṛkṣamūlamāsādya munisattama

"With various pastimes suited to each occasion, together with their companions, O twice-born, sometimes, when weary, having reached the foot of a tree, O best of sages,"

Verse 54 (padma.5.83.54)

उपविश्यासने दिव्ये मधुपानं प्रचक्रतुः । ततो मधुमदोन्मत्तौ निद्रया मीलितेक्षणौ

upaviśyāsane divye madhupānaṁ pracakratuḥ tato madhumadonmattau nidrayā mīlitekṣaṇau

"seated upon a divine seat, the two of them drink honey-wine. Then, intoxicated with the wine's madness, their eyes closed in sleep,"

Verse 55 (padma.5.83.55)

मिथः पाणी समालंब्य कामबाणवशं गतौ । रिरंसूविशतःकुञ्जंस्खलद्वाङ्मनसौपथि

mithaḥ pāṇī samālaṁbya kāmabāṇavaśaṁ gatau riraṁsūviśataḥkuñjaṁskhaladvāṅmanasaupathi

"holding each other's hands, overcome by the power of Kama's arrows, desiring love-sport, entering a bower, their speech and thoughts stumbling on the way,"

Verse 56 (padma.5.83.56)

क्रीडतश्च ततस्तत्र करिणीयूथपौ यथा । सख्योऽपि मधुभिर्मत्ता निद्रयापीडितेक्षणाः

krīḍataśca tatastatra kariṇīyūthapau yathā sakhyo'pi madhubhirmattā nidrayāpīḍitekṣaṇāḥ

"and sporting there like a bull-elephant and his elephant-cow. Their companions too, intoxicated with wine, their eyes heavy with sleep,"

Verse 57 (padma.5.83.57)

अभितो मंजुकुंजेषु सर्वा एवापि शिश्यिरे । पृथगेकेन वपुषा कृष्णोऽपि युगपद्विभुः

abhito maṁjukuṁjeṣu sarvā evāpi śiśyire pṛthagekena vapuṣā kṛṣṇo'pi yugapadvibhuḥ

"all lay down together in the lovely groves round about. Krishna too, though all-pervading, in a single separate body each,"

Verse 58 (padma.5.83.58)

सर्वासां संनिधिं गच्छेत्प्रियया प्रेरितो मुहुः । रमयित्वा च ताः सर्वाः करिणीर्गजराडिव

sarvāsāṁ saṁnidhiṁ gacchetpriyayā prerito muhuḥ ramayitvā ca tāḥ sarvāḥ kariṇīrgajarāḍiva

"goes, urged repeatedly by his beloved, into the presence of each and every one of them, and having delighted them all, like the lord of elephants delighting his elephant-cows,"

Verse 59 (padma.5.83.59)

प्रियया च तथा ताभिः क्रीडार्थं च सरो व्रजेत् । जलसेकैर्मिथस्तत्र क्रीडतः सगणौ ततः

priyayā ca tathā tābhiḥ krīḍārthaṁ ca saro vrajet jalasekairmithastatra krīḍataḥ sagaṇau tataḥ

"then, together with his beloved and with them, he goes to a lake for the sake of play. Sprinkling one another with water there, sporting together with their companions,"

Verse 60 (padma.5.83.60)

वासः स्रक्चंदनैर्दिव्यैर्भूषणैरपि भूषितौ । तत्रैव सरसस्तीरे दिव्यरत्नमये गृहे

vāsaḥ srakcaṁdanairdivyairbhūṣaṇairapi bhūṣitau tatraiva sarasastīre divyaratnamaye gṛhe

"adorned with garments, garlands, divine sandal-paste, and ornaments, there, on the bank of that very lake, in a house made of divine jewels,"

Verse 61 (padma.5.83.61)

प्रागेव फलमूलानि कल्पितानि मया मुने । हरिस्तु प्रथमं भुक्त्वा कांतया परिवेष्टितः

prāgeva phalamūlāni kalpitāni mayā mune haristu prathamaṁ bhuktvā kāṁtayā pariveṣṭitaḥ

"'the fruits and roots have already been prepared by me before, O sage.' Hari, having eaten first, surrounded by his beloved,"

Verse 62 (padma.5.83.62)

द्वित्राभिः सेवितो गच्छेच्छय्यां पुष्पविनिर्मिताम् । तांबूलैर्व्यजनैस्तत्र पादसंवाहनादिभिः

dvitrābhiḥ sevito gacchecchayyāṁ puṣpavinirmitām tāṁbūlairvyajanaistatra pādasaṁvāhanādibhiḥ

"and served by two or three companions, goes to a bed made of flowers; there, served with betel, with fans, with the massaging of feet and the like,"

Verse 63 (padma.5.83.63)

सेव्यमानो हसंस्ताभिर्मोदते प्रेयसीं स्मरन् । राधिकापि हरौ सुप्ते सगणा मुदितांतरा

sevyamāno hasaṁstābhirmodate preyasīṁ smaran rādhikāpi harau supte sagaṇā muditāṁtarā

"attended by them, laughing, he rejoices, thinking of his beloved. Radhika too, when Hari has fallen asleep, together with her companions, her heart delighted,"

Verse 64 (padma.5.83.64)

अपि तत्र गतप्राणा तदुच्छिष्टं भुनक्ति च । किंचिदेव ततो भुक्त्वा व्रजेच्छय्यानिकेतनम्

api tatra gataprāṇā taducchiṣṭaṁ bhunakti ca kiṁcideva tato bhuktvā vrajecchayyāniketanam

"even there, as if her very life had departed, eats his leftover food. Having eaten only a little of it, she then goes to the bedchamber,"

Verse 65 (padma.5.83.65)

द्रष्टुं कांतमुखांभोजं चकोरीव निशाकरम् । तांबूलचर्वितं तस्य तत्रत्याभिर्निवेदितम्

draṣṭuṁ kāṁtamukhāṁbhojaṁ cakorīva niśākaram tāṁbūlacarvitaṁ tasya tatratyābhirniveditam

"to see her beloved's lotus face, like a chakori bird gazing at the moon; his chewed betel is presented to her by those attending there."

Verse 66 (padma.5.83.66)

तांबूलान्यपि चाश्नाति विभजंती प्रियालिषु । कृष्णोऽपि तासां शुश्रूषुः स्वच्छंदं भाषितं मिथः

tāṁbūlānyapi cāśnāti vibhajaṁtī priyāliṣu kṛṣṇo'pi tāsāṁ śuśrūṣuḥ svacchaṁdaṁ bhāṣitaṁ mithaḥ

"She too eats the betel, distributing it among her beloved companions. Krishna too, attentive to their service, engaging in free conversation among themselves,"

Verse 67 (padma.5.83.67)

प्राप्तनिद्र इवाभाति विनिद्रोऽपि पटावृतः । ताश्च क्ष्वेली क्षणं कृत्वा कुतश्चिदनुमानतः

prāptanidra ivābhāti vinidro'pi paṭāvṛtaḥ tāśca kṣvelī kṣaṇaṁ kṛtvā kutaścidanumānataḥ

"though not asleep, covered with a cloth, he appears as though he had fallen asleep. And they, having jested a moment, from some inference,"

Verse 68 (padma.5.83.68)

विदश्य रसनां दद्भिः पश्यंत्योऽन्योन्यमाननम् । विलीना इव लज्जाब्धौ क्षणमूचुर्न किंचन

vidaśya rasanāṁ dadbhiḥ paśyaṁtyo'nyonyamānanam vilīnā iva lajjābdhau kṣaṇamūcurna kiṁcana

"biting their tongues between their teeth, glancing at one another's faces, as if drowned for a moment in an ocean of shyness, say nothing at all."

Verse 69 (padma.5.83.69)

क्षणादेव ततो वस्त्रं दूरीकृत्य तदंगतः । साधुनिद्रां गतोऽसीति हासयंत्यो हसंति च

kṣaṇādeva tato vastraṁ dūrīkṛtya tadaṁgataḥ sādhunidrāṁ gato'sīti hāsayaṁtyo hasaṁti ca

"Then, in an instant, removing the cloth from his body, saying, 'You have slept well indeed!' — mocking him, they laugh."

Verse 70 (padma.5.83.70)

एवं तैर्विविधैर्हास्यै रममाणौ गणैः सह । अनुभूय क्षणं निद्रा सुखं च मुनिसत्तम

evaṁ tairvividhairhāsyai ramamāṇau gaṇaiḥ saha anubhūya kṣaṇaṁ nidrā sukhaṁ ca munisattama

"Thus, sporting with various jests together with their companions, having experienced, O best of sages, a moment of sleep and happiness,"

Verse 71 (padma.5.83.71)

उपविश्यासने दिव्ये सगणौ विस्तृते मुदा । पणीकृत्य मिथोहार चुंबाश्लेषपरिच्छदान्

upaviśyāsane divye sagaṇau vistṛte mudā paṇīkṛtya mithohāra cuṁbāśleṣaparicchadān

"seated upon a spread divine seat, together with their companions, joyfully, having wagered mutual necklaces, kisses, and embraces as stakes,"

Verse 72 (padma.5.83.72)

अक्षै र्विक्रीडतः प्रेम्णा नर्मालापपुरस्सरम् । पराजितोऽपि प्रियया जितोहमिति वै ब्रुवन्

akṣai rvikrīḍataḥ premṇā narmālāpapurassaram parājito'pi priyayā jitohamiti vai bruvan

"they play at dice with love, preceded by playful banter; even when defeated by his beloved, he still says, 'I have won!'"

Verse 73 (padma.5.83.73)

हारादिग्रहणे तस्याः प्रवृत्तस्ताड्यते तया । तयैवं ताडितः कृष्णः करेणास्य सरोरुहे

hārādigrahaṇe tasyāḥ pravṛttastāḍyate tayā tayaivaṁ tāḍitaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ kareṇāsya saroruhe

"When she sets about taking the necklace and the rest, she is struck by him; thus struck by him, Krishna strikes her hand upon her own lotus-like cheek."

Verse 74 (padma.5.83.74)

विषण्णमानसो भूत्वा गंतुं प्रकुरुते मतिम् । जितोऽस्मि चेत्त्वया देवि गृह्यतां यत्पणीकृतम्

viṣaṇṇamānaso bhūtvā gaṁtuṁ prakurute matim jito'smi cettvayā devi gṛhyatāṁ yatpaṇīkṛtam

"Growing downcast in mind, he pretends to make ready to leave: 'If I have been defeated by you, O goddess, let what was wagered be taken —'"

Verse 75 (padma.5.83.75)

चुंबनादि मया दत्तमित्युक्त्वा सा तथाचरेत् । कौटिल्यं तद्भ्रुवोर्द्रष्टुं श्रोतुं तद्भर्त्सनं वचः

cuṁbanādi mayā dattamityuktvā sā tathācaret kauṭilyaṁ tadbhruvordraṣṭuṁ śrotuṁ tadbhartsanaṁ vacaḥ

"'the kiss and the rest that I have given' — having said this, she does so, while he pretends to observe the crookedness of her brows, to hear her chiding words."

Verse 76 (padma.5.83.76)

ततः सारीशुकानां च श्रुत्वा वागाहवं मिथः । निर्गच्छतस्ततः स्थानाद्गंतुकामौ गृहं प्रति

tataḥ sārīśukānāṁ ca śrutvā vāgāhavaṁ mithaḥ nirgacchatastataḥ sthānādgaṁtukāmau gṛhaṁ prati

"Then, hearing the mock quarrel of words between the mynahs and parrots with one another, the two of them, going forth from that place, desiring to return home,"

Verse 77 (padma.5.83.77)

कृष्णः कांतामनुज्ञाप्य गवामभिमुखं व्रजेत् । सा तु सूर्यगृहं गच्छेत्सखीमंडलसंयुता

kṛṣṇaḥ kāṁtāmanujñāpya gavāmabhimukhaṁ vrajet sā tu sūryagṛhaṁ gacchetsakhīmaṁḍalasaṁyutā

"Krishna, having taken leave of his beloved, goes toward the cows; she goes to the sun-temple, accompanied by her circle of companions."

Verse 78 (padma.5.83.78)

कियद्दूरं ततो गत्वा परावृत्य हरिं पुनः । विप्रवेषं समास्थाय याति सूर्यगृहं प्रति

kiyaddūraṁ tato gatvā parāvṛtya hariṁ punaḥ vipraveṣaṁ samāsthāya yāti sūryagṛhaṁ prati

"Having gone some distance, then turning back toward Hari again, assuming the guise of a brahmin, he goes toward the sun-temple."

Verse 79 (padma.5.83.79)

सूर्यं प्रपूजयेत्तत्र प्रार्थितस्तत्सखीजनैः । तदैव कल्पितैर्वेदैः परिहासविगर्भितैः

sūryaṁ prapūjayettatra prārthitastatsakhījanaiḥ tadaiva kalpitairvedaiḥ parihāsavigarbhitaiḥ

"There he worships the sun, entreated by her companions, then, with playfully invented Vedic verses, laced with jest,"

Verse 80 (padma.5.83.80)

ततस्ता ज्ञापितं कांतं परिज्ञाय विचक्षणाः । आनंदसागरे मग्ना न विदुः स्वं न चापरम्

tatastā jñāpitaṁ kāṁtaṁ parijñāya vicakṣaṇāḥ ānaṁdasāgare magnā na viduḥ svaṁ na cāparam

"then, having recognized their beloved thus made known to them, those discerning ones, immersed in an ocean of bliss, know neither themselves nor anything else."

Verse 81 (padma.5.83.81)

विहारैर्विविधैरेवं सार्द्धयामद्वयं मुने । नीत्वा गृहं व्रजेयुस्ताः स च कृष्णो गवां व्रजेत्

vihārairvividhairevaṁ sārddhayāmadvayaṁ mune nītvā gṛhaṁ vrajeyustāḥ sa ca kṛṣṇo gavāṁ vrajet

"Thus, with various pastimes, having spent, O sage, the second three-hour watch of the day, they go home, and he, Krishna, goes toward the cows."

Verse 82 (padma.5.83.82)

संगम्य स्वसखीन्कृष्णो गृहीत्वा गाः समंततः । आगच्छति व्रजं हर्षान्नादयन्मुरलद्यं मुने

saṁgamya svasakhīnkṛṣṇo gṛhītvā gāḥ samaṁtataḥ āgacchati vrajaṁ harṣānnādayanmuraladyaṁ mune

"Having met his companions, and gathered the cows from all around, Krishna comes to Vraja with joy, sounding his flute, O sage."

Verse 83 (padma.5.83.83)

ततो नंदादयः सर्वे श्रुत्वा वेणुरवं हरेः । गोधूलिपटलव्याप्तं दृष्ट्वा चापि नभस्तलम्

tato naṁdādayaḥ sarve śrutvā veṇuravaṁ hareḥ godhūlipaṭalavyāptaṁ dṛṣṭvā cāpi nabhastalam

"Then Nanda and all the others, hearing the sound of Hari's flute, and beholding the sky filled with clouds of dust raised by the cows' hooves,"

Verse 84 (padma.5.83.84)

विसृज्य सर्वकर्माणि स्त्रियो बालादयोऽपि च । कृष्णस्याभिमुखं यांति तद्दर्शनसमुत्सुकाः

visṛjya sarvakarmāṇi striyo bālādayo'pi ca kṛṣṇasyābhimukhaṁ yāṁti taddarśanasamutsukāḥ

"leaving aside all their tasks, the women, children, and the rest too, go to meet Krishna, eager for the sight of him."

Verse 85 (padma.5.83.85)

राजमार्गे व्रजद्वारि यत्र सर्वे व्रजौकसः । कृष्णोऽपि तान्समागम्य यथावदनुपूर्वशः

rājamārge vrajadvāri yatra sarve vrajaukasaḥ kṛṣṇo'pi tānsamāgamya yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ

"On the royal road, at the gate of Vraja, where all the residents of Vraja gather, Krishna too, meeting each of them in due order,"

Verse 86 (padma.5.83.86)

दर्शनस्पर्शनैर्वाचा स्मितपूर्वावलोकनैः । गोपवृद्धान्नमस्कारैः कायिकैर्वाचिकैरपि

darśanasparśanairvācā smitapūrvāvalokanaiḥ gopavṛddhānnamaskāraiḥ kāyikairvācikairapi

"with looks, touches, words, smiling glances beforehand, with salutations to the elder cowherds, both bodily and verbal,"

Verse 87 (padma.5.83.87)

अष्टांगपातैः पितरौ रोहिणीमपि नारद । नेत्रांतसूचितेनैव विनयेन प्रियां तथा

aṣṭāṁgapātaiḥ pitarau rohiṇīmapi nārada netrāṁtasūcitenaiva vinayena priyāṁ tathā

"with eightfold prostration to his parents, and to Rohini too, O Narada, and to his beloved, with a humility indicated only by the corner of his eye —"

Verse 88 (padma.5.83.88)

एवं तैस्तद्यथायोग्यं व्रजौकोभिः प्रपूजितः । गवालये तथा गाश्च संप्रवेश्य समंततः

evaṁ taistadyathāyogyaṁ vrajaukobhiḥ prapūjitaḥ gavālaye tathā gāśca saṁpraveśya samaṁtataḥ

"thus, duly honored by the people of Vraja, each as befits them, having caused the cows too to enter the cow-pen, from every side,"

Verse 89 (padma.5.83.89)

पितृभ्यामर्थितो याति भ्रात्रा सह निजालयम् । स्नात्वा पीत्वा तत्र किंचिद्भुक्त्वा मात्रानुमोदितः

pitṛbhyāmarthito yāti bhrātrā saha nijālayam snātvā pītvā tatra kiṁcidbhuktvā mātrānumoditaḥ

"requested by his parents, he goes with his brother to his own home. Having bathed, drunk, and eaten a little there, with his mother's consent,"

Verse 90 (padma.5.83.90)

गवालयं पुनर्याति दोग्धुकामो गवां पयः । ताश्च दुग्ध्वा दोहयित्वा पाययित्वा च काश्चन

gavālayaṁ punaryāti dogdhukāmo gavāṁ payaḥ tāśca dugdhvā dohayitvā pāyayitvā ca kāścana

"he goes again to the cow-pen, wishing to milk the cows. Having milked some himself, having had others milked, and having given some to drink,"

Verse 91 (padma.5.83.91)

पित्रा सार्द्धं गृहं याति तत्र भावशतानुगः । तत्र पित्रा पितृव्यैश्च तत्पुत्रैश्च बलेन च

pitrā sārddhaṁ gṛhaṁ yāti tatra bhāvaśatānugaḥ tatra pitrā pitṛvyaiśca tatputraiśca balena ca

"he goes home together with his father, followed there by hundreds of feelings. There, with his father, his father's brothers, their sons, and with Balarama,"

Verse 92 (padma.5.83.92)

भुनक्ति विविधान्नानि चर्व्यचोष्यादिकानि च । तन्मतिः प्रार्थनात्पूर्वं राधिका च तदैव ह

bhunakti vividhānnāni carvyacoṣyādikāni ca tanmatiḥ prārthanātpūrvaṁ rādhikā ca tadaiva ha

"he eats various foods, both those to be chewed and those to be sucked. Radhika too, at that very time, anticipating his taste even before he asks,"

Verse 93 (padma.5.83.93)

प्रस्थापयेत्सखीद्वारा पक्वान्नानि तदालयम् । श्लाघयंश्च हरिस्तानि भुक्त्वा पित्रादिभिः सह

prasthāpayetsakhīdvārā pakvānnāni tadālayam ślāghayaṁśca haristāni bhuktvā pitrādibhiḥ saha

"sends, through her companions, cooked dishes to his house. Krishna, praising them, having eaten together with his father and the others,"

Verse 94 (padma.5.83.94)

सभागृहं व्रजेत्तैश्च जुष्टं बंदिजनादिभिः । पक्वान्नानि गृहीत्वा याः सख्यस्तत्र पुरागताः

sabhāgṛhaṁ vrajettaiśca juṣṭaṁ baṁdijanādibhiḥ pakvānnāni gṛhītvā yāḥ sakhyastatra purāgatāḥ

"goes to the assembly hall, frequented by bards and the like. Those companions who had come there before, having taken the cooked dishes,"

Verse 95 (padma.5.83.95)

बहूनि च पुनस्तानि प्रदत्तानि यशोदया । सख्यस्तत्र तया दत्तं कृष्णोच्छिष्टं नयंति च

bahūni ca punastāni pradattāni yaśodayā sakhyastatra tayā dattaṁ kṛṣṇocchiṣṭaṁ nayaṁti ca

"many more of which are given again by Yashoda. The companions carry away there what Krishna has left over, given by her."

Verse 96 (padma.5.83.96)

सर्वं ताभिः समानीय राधिकायै निवेद्यते । सापि भुक्त्वा सखीवर्गयुता तदनुपूर्वशः

sarvaṁ tābhiḥ samānīya rādhikāyai nivedyate sāpi bhuktvā sakhīvargayutā tadanupūrvaśaḥ

"Having gathered all of it together, they present it to Radhika. She too, together with her band of companions, eats it in due order,"

Verse 97 (padma.5.83.97)

सखीभिर्मंडिता तिष्ठेदभिसर्त्तुं समुद्यता । प्रस्थाप्यते मया काचिदित एव ततः सखी

sakhībhirmaṁḍitā tiṣṭhedabhisarttuṁ samudyatā prasthāpyate mayā kācidita eva tataḥ sakhī

"then, adorned by her companions, remains ready to go forth for the tryst. Some one companion is then sent by me from this very place,"

Verse 98 (padma.5.83.98)

तयाभिसारिता साथ यमुनायाः समीपतः । कल्पवृक्षनिकुंजेऽस्मिन्दिव्यरत्नमये गृहे

tayābhisāritā sātha yamunāyāḥ samīpataḥ kalpavṛkṣanikuṁje'smindivyaratnamaye gṛhe

"and by her she is led forth, near the Yamuna, to this very house made of divine jewels in the Kalpavriksha-grove,"

Verse 99 (padma.5.83.99)

सितकृष्णनिशायोग्यवेषा याति सखीवृता । कृष्णोऽपि विविधं तत्र दृष्ट्वा कौतूहलं ततः

sitakṛṣṇaniśāyogyaveṣā yāti sakhīvṛtā kṛṣṇo'pi vividhaṁ tatra dṛṣṭvā kautūhalaṁ tataḥ

"in a guise fitting for either a bright or a dark night, she goes, surrounded by her companions. Krishna too, having seen various things there, out of curiosity,"

कात्यायन्या मनोज्ञानि श्रुत्वा संगीतकान्यपि । धनधान्यादिभिस्ताश्च प्रीणयित्वा विधानतः

kātyāyanyā manojñāni śrutvā saṁgītakānyapi dhanadhānyādibhistāśca prīṇayitvā vidhānataḥ

"having heard the delightful songs performed by Katyayani in disguise, and having gratified them duly, with wealth, grain and the like,"

Verse 101 (padma.5.83.101)

जनैराराधितो मात्रा याति सख्यानिकेतनम् । मातरि प्रस्थितायां च भोजयित्वा ततो गृहम्

janairārādhito mātrā yāti sakhyāniketanam mātari prasthitāyāṁ ca bhojayitvā tato gṛham

"honored by the people, he goes, with his mother, to his companion's dwelling. When his mother has departed, having then fed his companions, he goes home."

संकेतकं कांतयात्र समागच्छेदलक्षितः । मिलित्वा तावुभावत्र क्रीडतो वनराजिषु

saṁketakaṁ kāṁtayātra samāgacchedalakṣitaḥ militvā tāvubhāvatra krīḍato vanarājiṣu

"At the trysting place, together with his beloved, he comes, unnoticed. The two of them, meeting there, sport in the rows of forest trees,"

Verse 103 (padma.5.83.103)

विहारैर्विविधै रासलास्यहासपुरस्सरैः । सार्द्धयामद्वयं नीत्वा रात्रेरेवं विहारतः

vihārairvividhai rāsalāsyahāsapurassaraiḥ sārddhayāmadvayaṁ nītvā rātrerevaṁ vihārataḥ

"with various pastimes, preceded by the Rasa dance, graceful movement, and laughter, having thus spent the third watch of the night in such play,"

Verse 104 (padma.5.83.104)

सुषुप्सू विशतः कुंजं पक्षिणीभिरलक्षितौ । एकांते कुसुमैः कॢप्ते केलितल्पे मनोहरे

suṣupsū viśataḥ kuṁjaṁ pakṣiṇībhiralakṣitau ekāṁte kusumaiḥ kḷpte kelitalpe manohare

"the two of them, desiring sleep, enter the bower, unnoticed by the birds, in a lovely love-couch made of flowers, prepared in seclusion."

Verse 105 (padma.5.83.105)

सुप्ता वा तिष्ठतस्तत्र सेव्यमानौ निजालिभिः । इति ते सर्वमाख्यातं नैत्यकं चरितं हरेः

suptā vā tiṣṭhatastatra sevyamānau nijālibhiḥ iti te sarvamākhyātaṁ naityakaṁ caritaṁ hareḥ

"There, whether asleep or still awake, they are attended by their own companions. Thus have I told you all of this, Hari's daily conduct."

Verse 106 (padma.5.83.106)

पापिनोऽपि विमुच्यंते श्रवणादस्य नारद । नारद उवाच- धन्योऽस्म्यनुगृहीतोऽस्मि त्वया देवि न संशयः

pāpino'pi vimucyaṁte śravaṇādasya nārada nārada uvāca- dhanyo'smyanugṛhīto'smi tvayā devi na saṁśayaḥ

"Even sinners are freed by hearing this, O Narada." Narada said: "I am blessed, I am truly graced by you, O goddess, without doubt,"

Verse 107 (padma.5.83.107)

हरेर्दैनंदिनीलीला यतो मेऽद्य प्रकाशिता । सूत उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा तां परिक्रम्य तया चापि प्रपूजितः

harerdainaṁdinīlīlā yato me'dya prakāśitā sūta uvāca- ityuktvā tāṁ parikramya tayā cāpi prapūjitaḥ

"since Hari's daily pastime has today been revealed to me." Suta said: "Having said this, having circumambulated her, and duly honored by her too,"

Verse 108 (padma.5.83.108)

अंतर्धानं गतो ब्रह्मन्नारदो मुनिसत्तमः । मयाप्येतच्चानुपूर्व्यात्सर्वमेव प्रकीर्तितम्

aṁtardhānaṁ gato brahmannārado munisattamaḥ mayāpyetaccānupūrvyātsarvameva prakīrtitam

"Narada, foremost of sages, O brahmin, vanished from sight. This too I have declared to you, all of it, in due order."

Verse 109 (padma.5.83.109)

जपेन्नित्यं प्रयत्नेन मंत्रयुग्ममनुत्तमम् । कृष्णवक्त्रादिदं लब्धं पुरा रुद्रेण यत्नतः

japennityaṁ prayatnena maṁtrayugmamanuttamam kṛṣṇavaktrādidaṁ labdhaṁ purā rudreṇa yatnataḥ

"One should recite daily, with effort, this unsurpassed pair-mantra — obtained formerly from Krishna's own mouth, with great effort, by Rudra."

Verse 110 (padma.5.83.110)

तेनोक्तं नारदायापि नारदेन ममोदितम् । संस्कारांश्च विधायैव मयाप्येतत्तवोदितम्

tenoktaṁ nāradāyāpi nāradena mamoditam saṁskārāṁśca vidhāyaiva mayāpyetattavoditam

"It was told by him to Narada too, and by Narada it was declared to me; having performed the sacraments, I too have declared this to you."

Verse 111 (padma.5.83.111)

त्वयाप्येतद्गोपनीयं रहस्यं परमाद्भुतम् । शौनक उवाच- कृतकृत्योभवं साक्षात्त्वत्प्रसादादहं गुरो

tvayāpyetadgopanīyaṁ rahasyaṁ paramādbhutam śaunaka uvāca- kṛtakṛtyobhavaṁ sākṣāttvatprasādādahaṁ guro

"You too must keep this supremely wondrous secret hidden." Shaunaka said: "I have become truly fulfilled, O guru, by your grace,"

Verse 112 (padma.5.83.112)

रहस्यानां रहस्यं यत्त्वया मह्यं प्रकाशितम् । सूत उवाच- धर्मानेतानुपातिष्ठञ्जल्पन्मंत्रमहर्निशम्

rahasyānāṁ rahasyaṁ yattvayā mahyaṁ prakāśitam sūta uvāca- dharmānetānupātiṣṭhañjalpanmaṁtramaharniśam

"since the secret of secrets has been revealed by you to me." Suta said: "Practicing these duties, reciting the mantra day and night,"

Verse 113 (padma.5.83.113)

अचिरादेव तद्दास्यमवाप्स्यसि न संशयः । मयापि गम्यते ब्रह्मन्नित्यमायतनं विभोः

acirādeva taddāsyamavāpsyasi na saṁśayaḥ mayāpi gamyate brahmannityamāyatanaṁ vibhoḥ

"you shall soon attain that service, without doubt. I too, O brahmin, go daily to the eternal abode of the all-pervading Lord,"

Verse 114 (padma.5.83.114)

गुरोर्गुरोर्भानुजायाः कूले गोपीश्वरस्य च

gurorgurorbhānujāyāḥ kūle gopīśvarasya ca

"on the bank of the guru of gurus' sister, and of Gopishvara."

Verse 115 (padma.5.83.115)

इदं चरित्रं परमं पवित्रं प्रोक्तं महेशेन महानुभावम् । शृण्वंति ये भक्तियुता मनुष्यास्ते यांति नित्यं पदमच्युतस्य

idaṁ caritraṁ paramaṁ pavitraṁ proktaṁ maheśena mahānubhāvam śṛṇvaṁti ye bhaktiyutā manuṣyāste yāṁti nityaṁ padamacyutasya

This supreme, sacred, and glorious tale, spoken by Mahesha — those men, filled with devotion, who hear it, go eternally to the abode of the unfallen one.

Verse 116 (padma.5.83.116)

धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यमारोग्याभीष्टसिद्धिदम् । स्वर्गापवर्गसंपत्तिकारणं पापनाशनम्

dhanyaṁ yaśasyamāyuṣyamārogyābhīṣṭasiddhidam svargāpavargasaṁpattikāraṇaṁ pāpanāśanam

It is blessed, brings fame and long life, health, and the fulfillment of desires; it is the cause of the wealth of heaven and liberation, and the destroyer of sin.

Verse 117 (padma.5.83.117)

भक्त्या पठंति ये नित्यं मानवा विष्णुतत्पराः । न तेषां पुनरावृत्तिर्विष्णुलोकात्कथंचन

bhaktyā paṭhaṁti ye nityaṁ mānavā viṣṇutatparāḥ na teṣāṁ punarāvṛttirviṣṇulokātkathaṁcana

Those men, devoted to Vishnu, who recite it daily with devotion — for them there is no return from Vishnu's realm, in any way.
