Verse 1 (padma.5.91.1)

नारद उवाच-। देवशर्मा महाप्राज्ञः समं सुमनसा तया । तीर्थे कनखले पुण्ये गंगायामतिविश्रुते

nārada uvāca- devaśarmā mahāprājñaḥ samaṁ sumanasā tayā tīrthe kanakhale puṇye gaṁgāyāmativiśrute

Narada said: "Devasharma, greatly wise, together with Sumana, at the sacred and highly renowned holy place of Kanakhala, on the Ganga,"

Verse 2 (padma.5.91.2)

वैशाखे विधिना स्नानं चक्रे मेषस्थिते रवौ । पूजयामास विधिवन्मधुसूदनमच्युतम्

vaiśākhe vidhinā snānaṁ cakre meṣasthite ravau pūjayāmāsa vidhivanmadhusūdanamacyutam

"performed the bathing rite according to the injunctions of Vaishakha, when the sun stood in Aries; he duly worshipped Madhusudana, the unfallen one."

Verse 3 (padma.5.91.3)

यमैः सनियमैर्युक्तः शक्त्या किंचिद्ददौ ततः । हविष्यभुग्भूमिशायी ब्रह्मचर्यव्रतस्थितः

yamaiḥ saniyamairyuktaḥ śaktyā kiṁciddadau tataḥ haviṣyabhugbhūmiśāyī brahmacaryavratasthitaḥ

"Observing the restraints along with the disciplines, he then gave something according to his means; eating sanctified food, sleeping on the ground, established in the vow of celibacy,"

Verse 4 (padma.5.91.4)

कृच्छ्रादि तपसा क्षामो ध्यायन्नारायणं हृदि । तत्र प्राप्य स वैशाखीं दत्वा मधुतिलादिकम्

kṛcchrādi tapasā kṣāmo dhyāyannārāyaṇaṁ hṛdi tatra prāpya sa vaiśākhīṁ datvā madhutilādikam

"emaciated through austerity difficult to bear, meditating upon Narayana in his heart. Having thus reached Vaishakha there, giving honey, sesame and the like,"

Verse 5 (padma.5.91.5)

विप्रेभ्यो भोजनं दत्वा भक्त्या धेनुं सदक्षिणाम् । अच्छिद्रं प्रार्थयामास तत्र स्नानस्य भूसुरान्

viprebhyo bhojanaṁ datvā bhaktyā dhenuṁ sadakṣiṇām acchidraṁ prārthayāmāsa tatra snānasya bhūsurān

"giving food to brahmins, and with devotion a cow together with a sacrificial fee, he requested the earth-gods there for the flawless completeness of that bathing observance."

Verse 6 (padma.5.91.6)

सापि साध्वी च सुश्रोणी पतिभक्तिपरायणा । पतिं शुश्रूषते नित्यं स्नात्वा संपूज्य केशवम्

sāpi sādhvī ca suśroṇī patibhaktiparāyaṇā patiṁ śuśrūṣate nityaṁ snātvā saṁpūjya keśavam

"She too, that chaste, shapely woman, devoted solely to her husband, ever served her husband, having bathed and duly worshipped Keshava."

Verse 7 (padma.5.91.7)

तौ दंपती ततो यातौ स्वगेहं साधुहर्षितम् । कृतकृत्यावथात्मानौ मन्यमानावसंशयम्

tau daṁpatī tato yātau svagehaṁ sādhuharṣitam kṛtakṛtyāvathātmānau manyamānāvasaṁśayam

"That couple then went, righteously joyful, to their own home, considering themselves, without doubt, to have accomplished their purpose."

Verse 8 (padma.5.91.8)

तेन पुण्यप्रभावेण कालेन कियता किल । बभूवुरमितास्तस्य धनधान्यानि संपदः

tena puṇyaprabhāveṇa kālena kiyatā kila babhūvuramitāstasya dhanadhānyāni saṁpadaḥ

"By the power of that merit, after some span of time indeed, boundless wealth, grain, and prosperity came to be his."

Verse 9 (padma.5.91.9)

तनया विनयोपेताश्चत्वारः श्रुतिकोविदाः । धर्मज्ञा वैष्णवा नित्यं पितृमातृपरायणाः

tanayā vinayopetāścatvāraḥ śrutikovidāḥ dharmajñā vaiṣṇavā nityaṁ pitṛmātṛparāyaṇāḥ

"Four sons were born, endowed with humility, learned in the Shrutis, knowers of dharma, ever Vaishnavas, devoted to father and mother,"

Verse 10 (padma.5.91.10)

बभूवुरमितप्रज्ञाः पुरुषार्थाय बोधिताः । विख्याता विधितत्त्वज्ञा ब्रह्मज्ञा ब्रह्मतत्पराः

babhūvuramitaprajñāḥ puruṣārthāya bodhitāḥ vikhyātā vidhitattvajñā brahmajñā brahmatatparāḥ

"of boundless wisdom, awakened to the purpose of human life, renowned, knowers of the truth of scriptural injunction, knowers of Brahman, devoted to Brahman,"

Verse 11 (padma.5.91.11)

समग्रगुणसंपन्नाः संप्रतिष्ठंति कीर्तयः

samagraguṇasaṁpannāḥ saṁpratiṣṭhaṁti kīrtayaḥ

endowed with the fullness of every virtue — their fame stands firmly established.

Verse 12 (padma.5.91.12)

तौ दंपती सुतसमग्रसमृद्धसौख्यं पुण्योदयं समुपयुज्य ततश्चिरेण । स्थानं परं परममीयतुरस्य भक्त्या श्रीमाधवे च सुकृतस्य नृपप्रसादात्

tau daṁpatī sutasamagrasamṛddhasaukhyaṁ puṇyodayaṁ samupayujya tataścireṇa sthānaṁ paraṁ paramamīyaturasya bhaktyā śrīmādhave ca sukṛtasya nṛpaprasādāt

That couple, having thus enjoyed, after a long while, the complete prosperity and happiness of their sons, the rise of merit, attained, through devotion in glorious Madhava and through the grace of their good deed, the supreme, highest state.

Verse 13 (padma.5.91.13)

यथैव माधवः साक्षाद्विद्यालक्ष्मी धवः स्मृतः । तथैव माधवो मासो मधुसूदनवल्लभः

yathaiva mādhavaḥ sākṣādvidyālakṣmī dhavaḥ smṛtaḥ tathaiva mādhavo māso madhusūdanavallabhaḥ

Just as Madhava himself is remembered as the very husband of the goddess of learning and fortune, so too is the month of Madhava dear to Madhusudana.

Verse 14 (padma.5.91.14)

इदं माधवमाहात्म्यं किंचित्संक्षेपतोऽनघ । मया ते कथितं वीर यत्पुरा च पितुः श्रुतम्

idaṁ mādhavamāhātmyaṁ kiṁcitsaṁkṣepato'nagha mayā te kathitaṁ vīra yatpurā ca pituḥ śrutam

This glory of Madhava, sinless one, has been declared to you by me, O hero, in brief, as it was formerly heard from my own father.
