Verse 1 (padma.6.10.1)

nārada uvāca atrottare mayā gatvā kathitaṁ siṁdhusūnave tvāṁ haṁtu sarvavīreśa pratijñā śaṁbhunā kṛtā śrutvetthaṁ madvaco rājaṁstataḥ papraccha so'suraḥ

Narada said: In response to this, I went and told the ocean's son: 'O lord of all heroes, Shambhu has vowed to kill you.' O king, hearing my words, that demon then asked —

Verse 2 (padma.6.10.2)

jālaṁdhara uvāca kimasti śūlino gehe ratnajātaṁ mahāmune tanmamācakṣva sakalaṁ nāsti yuddhaṁ nirāmiṣam

Jalandhara said: 'O great sage, what wealth of gems does the Trident-bearer possess in his house? Tell me all of it — there is no war without something worth fighting for.'

Verse 3 (padma.6.10.3)

nārada uvāca bhūtirgātre vṛṣo jīrṇaḥ phaṇinoṁ'ge gale viṣam bhikṣāpātraṁ kare putrau gajānana ṣaḍānanau

Narada said: 'Ashes upon his body, an old bull as vehicle, a serpent upon his limbs, poison in his throat, a begging-bowl in hand, and two sons, one elephant-faced, the other six-faced —

Verse 4 (padma.6.10.4)

ityādi vibhavastasya yadanyattannibodha me tanayā girirājasya viśālā hyunnatastanī

'such things are his only wealth — but hear something else from me: the daughter of the King of Mountains, broad-hipped and full-breasted,

Verse 5 (padma.6.10.5)

dagdhasmaro'pi bhagavānyasyārūpeṇa mohitaḥ maheśo yadvinodāya kurute nitya kautukam

'by whose beauty even the Lord who burned Kama himself was enchanted; for whose amusement Mahesha performs wonders every day,

Verse 6 (padma.6.10.6)

nṛtyangāyaṁśca tāñchaṁbhuḥ svayaṁ bhavati hāsakaḥ sā pārvatīti vikhyātā sauṁdaryāvadhi daivatam

'dancing and singing for her, Shambhu himself becomes a jester. She, renowned by the name Parvati, is the very deity of beauty's utmost limit.

Verse 7 (padma.6.10.7)

vṛṁdā varāṁganā rājannimāścāpsarasaḥ śubhāḥ na cāpnuvaṁti pārvatyāḥ ṣoḍaśīmapi tāṁ kalām

'O king, even a lady as excellent as Vrinda, and these auspicious apsaras, do not attain even one sixteenth of Parvati's own splendor.'

Verse 8 (padma.6.10.8)

ityuktvāhaṁ mahīpāla jālaṁdharamamarṣaṇam paśyatāṁ sarvadaityānāmaṁtardhānaṁ gataḥ kṣaṇāt

O king, having said this, before the eyes of all the demons, I vanished from before the impatient Jalandhara in an instant.

Verse 9 (padma.6.10.9)

atha sa preṣayaddūtaṁ siṁdhujaḥ siṁhikāsutam kṣaṇenāsādya kailāsaṁ devāvāsamapaśyata

Then the ocean's son sent Simhika's son as his envoy; reaching Kailasa in a moment, he beheld the abode of the gods.

Verse 10 (padma.6.10.10)

atrāṁtare harirbhīmamāpṛcchya tu tadā haram jagāmālakṣitastūrṇaṁ kṣīrābdhiṁ bhedaśaṁkayā

Meanwhile, having asked leave of the terrible Hara, Hari, fearing some awkward rift, slipped away unseen, swiftly, to the Ocean of Milk.

Verse 11 (padma.6.10.11)

dadarśa rāhurbhavanaṁ śaṁkarasyātidīptimat ātmānamātmanā vīkṣya kimityāha suvismitaḥ

Rahu beheld Shankara's exceedingly radiant abode; seeing his own reflection within it, he said, greatly astonished, 'What is this?'

Verse 12 (padma.6.10.12)

praveṣṭukāmo balibhirdvāri dvāsthairnirodhitaḥ yatnavānsa niṣiddho'pi tadā te prodyatāyudhāḥ

Wishing to enter, he was stopped at the gate by the mighty gatekeepers; though he tried, he was refused, and they stood there with weapons raised.

Verse 13 (padma.6.10.13)

tānnivārya gaṇānnaṁdī vyājahāra vidhuṁtudam kastvaṁ kasmādihāyātaḥ kiṁ kāryaṁ tava barbara brūhi kāryaṁ gaṇā yāvattvāṁ na hanyurbhayāvahāḥ

Restraining those attendants, Nandi addressed Vidhuntuda: 'Who are you, whence have you come, what is your business, O barbarian? State your business, before these fearsome attendants strike you down.'

Verse 14 (padma.6.10.14)

rāhuruvāca dūto jālaṁdharasyāhaṁ tvaṁ māṁ śarvāṁtike naya na vācyamaṁtare dvāstha mahārājaprayojanam

Rahu said: 'I am Jalandhara's envoy — take me into Sharva's presence. O gatekeeper, a great king's business is not to be spoken at the threshold.'

Verse 15 (padma.6.10.15)

naṁdī dūtoktamākarṇya nīlalohitamāyayau daṁḍavatpraṇipatyāgre sthitvā śaṁkaramabravīt

Hearing the envoy's words, Nandi went to Nilalohita, and, bowing down before him like a staff, standing there, said to Shankara —

Verse 16 (padma.6.10.16)

saiṁhikeyo mahārāja dvāre tiṣṭhati kāryataḥ sa prayātvathavāyātu bhavānājñaptumarhati

'O great king, the son of Simhika stands at the gate on some business; whether he should go or come in, you should command.'

Verse 17 (padma.6.10.17)

naṁdinoktamathākarṇya tvaranniva maheśvaraḥ suptāmaṁtaḥpurāddevīṁ prasthāpya ca sakhīvṛtām

Hearing Nandin's words, Maheshvara, as though in haste, sent the sleeping Goddess away from the inner chamber, together with her companions,

Verse 18 (padma.6.10.18)

paścādvāsthaṁ jagādātha naṁdindūtaṁ praveśaya tato haste pragṛhyāmuṁ dūtaṁ naṁdī mahābalaḥ

and then said to the gatekeeper: 'Nandi, let the envoy enter.' Then the mighty Nandi, taking that envoy by the hand,

Verse 19 (padma.6.10.19)

ānayāmāsa devānāṁ madhye śaṁbhumadarśayat taṁ dadarśa tadā rāhurjaṭilaṁ nīlamātmani

led him in among the gods and let him behold Shambhu. Rahu then beheld him — matted-locked, blue-throated within,

Verse 20 (padma.6.10.20)

paṁcavaktraṁ daśabhujaṁ nāgayajñopavītinam devīvirahitaṁ mūrdhni caṁdralekhāvibhūṣitam

five-faced, ten-armed, wearing a serpent as his sacred thread, without the Goddess beside him, adorned upon his head with the crescent moon,

Verse 21 (padma.6.10.21)

ucchvāsocchvāsanirmuṁcatpṛdākugaṇasevitam sarvadevagaṇopetaṁ sevitaṁ gaṇakoṭibhiḥ

attended by hosts of serpents released with each breath, accompanied by all the hosts of gods, served by millions of attendants.

Verse 22 (padma.6.10.22)

prāptaṁ jñātvā tato dūtaṁ śaṁbhurālokya cāgrataḥ prāha brūhi tadā rāhurvaktuṁ samupacakrame

Then, knowing the envoy had arrived, Shambhu looked at him and said, 'Speak' — then Rahu began to speak.

Verse 23 (padma.6.10.23)

rāhuruvāca deva jālaṁdhareṇāhaṁ preṣitastava sannidhau tasya śivavacaḥ śrutvā manmukhena drutaṁ kuru

Rahu said: 'O God, I have been sent by Jalandhara into your presence; hear his message for you, Shiva, from my mouth, and act upon it swiftly —

Verse 24 (padma.6.10.24)

giriśatvaṁ taponiṣṭho nirguṇo dharmavarjitaḥ tava nāsti pitā mātā vasu gotrādi varjitaḥ

'O Girisha, devoted only to austerity, without qualities, devoid of dharma — you have no father, no mother, no wealth, no lineage.

Verse 25 (padma.6.10.25)

jālaṁdharo mahābāhurbhuṁkte'sau bhuvanatrayam tasyaiva vaśyastvamapi tataścoktaṁ samācara

'The mighty-armed Jalandhara enjoys all three worlds; you too are subject to him — so do as he commands.

Verse 26 (padma.6.10.26)

purāṇapuruṣaḥ kāmī vṛṣārūḍhaḥ kathaṁ bhavān evaṁ vadati saṁprāptau sutau skaṁdavināyakau

'How is it that you, the ancient Purusha, ride a bull like one ruled by mere desire?' As he spoke thus, his two sons, Skanda and Vinayaka, arrived there.

Verse 27 (padma.6.10.27)

tasminkāle devadevo yatavāgaṁgamardanam cakāra ca karairvyastairvāsukirbhūtale'patat

At that instant the God of gods, restraining his words, his limbs writhing with suppressed anger, flailed his hands, and Vasuki fell to the ground.

Verse 28 (padma.6.10.28)

heraṁbavāhanasyākhoḥ pucchaṁ grastamathāhinā svapatraṁ grastamālokya muṁcamuṁcetyuvāca ha

The tail of the mouse, Heramba's vehicle, was then seized by that serpent; seeing his own mount caught, he cried out, 'Let go, let go!'

Verse 29 (padma.6.10.29)

atrāṁtare skaṁdavāhaṁ kṣubdhaṁ vīkṣya mahāsvaram tadbhayādvāsukirgrastamākhupucchamathodgirat

Meanwhile, seeing Skanda's mount agitated and crying loudly, out of fear of it Vasuki let go of the mouse's tail he had seized.

Verse 30 (padma.6.10.30)

athāruhya harasyāṁgaṁ galamāveṣṭya saṁsthitaḥ tasya niśvāsapavanairatha jāto hutāśanaḥ

Then, climbing upon Hara's body and coiling about his neck, he settled there; from the wind of his breathing, fire was then born.

Verse 31 (padma.6.10.31)

tasyoṣmaṇā caṁdra lekhā jaṭājūṭāṭavī sthitā sārdratāṁ tu tadā sāyātplāvitaṁ tadvapuryathā

By its heat, the crescent moon resting in the forest of his matted locks began to melt, as if his whole body were flooded by that dripping stream.

Verse 32 (padma.6.10.32)

tasyāhyamṛtadhārābhirbrahmamastakamālikā haramaulikapālānāmabhūtsaṁjīvitā tadā

By those streams of nectar, the garland of skulls upon Hara's crown was then revived to life once more.

Verse 33 (padma.6.10.33)

papāṭha pūrvamabhyastaṁ sarvayogaśrutikramam śrutvā parasparādhītaṁ vivadaṁti śirāṁsyatha

Each recited the whole course of Vedic and yogic learning it had once studied; hearing what the others had learned, those heads began to quarrel among themselves —

Verse 34 (padma.6.10.34)

ahamādirahaṁ pūrvamahameva parātparaḥ ahaṁ sraṣṭā ahaṁ pātetyutsukāni parasparam

'I am the first, I was before all, I alone am beyond the highest; I am the creator, I am the protector' — thus, each eager to outdo the other,

Verse 35 (padma.6.10.35)

śocaṁtyetāni no dattaṁ no bhuktaṁ na hutaṁ mayā lobhagrastena manasā no vittaṁ brahmaṇe'pi tam

they fell to lamenting: 'I gave nothing, enjoyed nothing, offered nothing in sacrifice; with a mind seized by greed, I gave not even a brahmin any wealth.'

Verse 36 (padma.6.10.36)

atheśvarajaṭājūṭādāvirāsīdgaṇo mahān tryānanastricaraṇastripucchaḥ saptahastavān

Then, from the Lord's matted locks, there appeared a great attendant — three-faced, three-footed, three-tailed, and seven-armed,

Verse 37 (padma.6.10.37)

sa ca kīrtimukho nāma piṁgalo jaṭilo mahān taṁ dṛṣṭvā sā kapālālī bhayāttasthau mṛteva sā

named Kirtimukha, tawny, immense, matted-locked; seeing him, that row of skulls stood terrified, as if struck dead.

Verse 38 (padma.6.10.38)

purataḥ prāha sagaṇastataḥ kīrtimukhaḥ prabhum praṇipatya śivaṁ devamatyarthaṁ kṣudhitaḥ prabho

Then, with his own troop, Kirtimukha came forward, bowed to the god Shiva, and said to the Lord: 'O Lord, I am exceedingly hungry —

Verse 39 (padma.6.10.39)

tadoktaḥ śaṁkareṇāho bhakṣaya tvaṁ raṇe hatān kṣaṇaṁ vicārya sa gaṇaḥ kvāpyadṛṣṭvā raṇaṁ tadā

Then Shankara said to him: 'Ah, eat those slain in battle!' Pondering a moment, that attendant, seeing no battlefield anywhere there,

Verse 40 (padma.6.10.40)

brahmāṇaṁ bhakṣituṁ prāptaḥ śaṁkareṇa nivāritaḥ tataḥ kīrtimukhenātha svāṁgaṁ sarvaṁ ca bhakṣitam

came instead to devour the quarreling skulls, but Shankara restrained him; then Kirtimukha devoured his own entire body,

Verse 41 (padma.6.10.41)

bubhukṣitena cātyaṁtaṁ niṣiddhena ca sarvataḥ tatsāhasaṁ tadā dṛṣṭvā bhaktiṁ kīrttimukhasya ca

being utterly famished yet forbidden from everything else. Seeing that boldness and Kirtimukha's devotion —

Verse 42 (padma.6.10.42)

tamuvāceśvaraḥ prītaḥ prāsāde tiṣṭha me sadā tvaccittarahito yaśca bhaviṣyati mamālaye

the Lord, pleased, said to him: 'Remain always at the door of my temple; whoever, in my abode, shall be devoid of devotion to you,

Verse 43 (padma.6.10.43)

sa patiṣyati śīghraṁ hītyuktaḥ soṁ'tarhito'bhavat śaṁbhormūdhni tadā devā vavṛṣuḥ puṣpavṛṣṭibhiḥ

'shall swiftly fall from grace — so be it.' Having said this, he vanished; then the gods rained flowers down upon Shambhu's head.

Verse 44 (padma.6.10.44)

evamatyadbhutaṁ dṛṣṭvā sabhāyāṁ tu triśūlinaḥ svarbhānurapi deveśaṁ punaḥ provāca vismitaḥ

Having witnessed this utterly wondrous event in the Trident-bearer's assembly, Svarbhanu, astonished, spoke once more to the Lord of gods —

Verse 45 (padma.6.10.45)

spṛśaṁti tvāṁ kathaṁ bhāvaṁ svādhīnaṁ yoginaṁ balāt iṁdriyaiḥ pūjyase tvaṁ hi prāpyo'yaṁ viṣayaiḥ katham

'How is it that these states touch you by force, though you are a self-controlled yogi? You are worshipped through the senses — how then can one attain you through mere sense-objects?

Verse 46 (padma.6.10.46)

brāhmādilokapālānāṁ pūjāṁ gṛhṇāsi sarvataḥ na tvaṁ paśyasi kaṁ devaṁ tvaṁ pūjayasi kaṁcana

'You accept worship from Brahma and all the world-guardians on every side — yet whom do you yourself look to, whom do you yourself worship?

Verse 47 (padma.6.10.47)

īśvaro'si kathaṁ loke bhikṣābhojī pratiṣṭhitaḥ saṁgopayasi yogīndra gaurīṁ ramyāṁ prayaccha me

'How are you established as Lord in the world, when you live by begging your food? O king of yogis, you hide Gauri away — give that lovely Gauri to me.

Verse 48 (padma.6.10.48)

skaṁdalaṁbodarābhyāṁ tvaṁ putrābhyāṁ sahito'dhunā bhikṣāpātraṁ gṛhītvā tu bhrama nityaṁ gṛhegṛhe

'Now, together with your two sons Skanda and Lambodara, take up your begging bowl and wander from house to house forever.'

Verse 49 (padma.6.10.49)

evaṁ bahuvidhaṁ tatra rāhurāheśvaraṁ prati bhagavānapi tacchrutvā nottaraṁ kiṁcidabravīt

Thus, in many ways, Rahu spoke against the Lord of gods there; the Lord, hearing all this, gave no reply at all.

Verse 50 (padma.6.10.50)

atheśaṁ mauninaṁ tyaktvā rāhurnaṁdinamabravīt tva maṁtrī hyasi senānīrvikaṭānana biṁbadhṛk

Then, leaving the silent Lord, Rahu spoke to Nandin: 'You are his minister and general, of a grotesque face, bearing such a form —

Verse 51 (padma.6.10.51)

evamācarita bhraṣṭaṁ tvaṁ śikṣayitumarhasi nocedroṣeṇeṁdra iva patiṣyati raṇe hataḥ

'you ought to discipline one who behaves so wrongly. Otherwise, struck down in wrath, he shall fall in battle, just like Indra did.'

Verse 52 (padma.6.10.52)

ityākarṇya vacastasya naṁdī vijñāpya ceśvaram bhrūsaṁjñayaiva sa tadā matamājñāya śūlinaḥ

Hearing his words, Nandi informed the Lord; and, understanding the Trident-bearer's intent from the mere sign of his eyebrows,

Verse 53 (padma.6.10.53)

saṁpūjya preṣayāmāsa rāhuṁ naṁdī gaṇāgraṇīḥ atha jālaṁdharaṁ gatvā kathayāmāsa vistarāt svarbhānustasya vṛttāṁtaṁ gaurīrūpaṁ manoharam

Nandi, foremost of the attendants, honored Rahu and sent him on his way. Then Svarbhanu went to Jalandhara and told him the whole account in detail, along with Gauri's enchanting form.
